AFRICA TRAVEL WEEK: AWARDS FOR CONSERVATION, POVERTY REDUCTION IMPACT

Gansbaai tops for Responsible Tourism Gansbaai, with Grootbos Private Nature Reserve and Marine Dynamics in its fold, beat 21 other finalists for the coveted position of Overall Winner in the African Responsible Tourism Awards 2015. Gansbaai Tourism manager, Glenda Kitley, received the award at a ceremony hosted in Cape Town as part of the Africa Travel Week from 13 to 17 April. “It was such a proud moment to stand on the stand and receive these awards. We have some amazing products in town that made these awards possible.” The judges said of Gansbaai: “This is a remarkable group of tourism businesses, many of which have won Responsible Tourism Awards individually, including Grootbos for its conservation of the fynbos and its poverty-reduction impact, and Marine Dynamics for conservation and local economic development. “The judges want to recognise them for the overall award for the

way in which they have worked together to create a destination with outstanding products, memorable experiences and brought local economic development and communal facilities to the local community. They have demonstrated what tourism can do to make better places to live in and great places to visit.” Gansbaai was also voted the Best Destination for Responsible Tourism. “Since 1995 Gansbaai Tourism has worked to create awareness of and market the area as a tourism destination. “The cluster of businesses in the area, some of them with international reputations, have worked together to develop an exemplary destination, a quality guest experience which has conserved fynbos and marine wildlife, created significant direct and indirect employment and they are now working together to quantify their environmental impacts,” said the judges. Other awards were also given in categories such as Beach Tourism and Best Blog. The full list of gold

Hermanus en sal in Januarie by hom aansluit. Volgens Oosie is daar slegs een goue reël as dit by besigheid kom.

BEWARE: Cape Clawless Otter can

drown your dog JANINE VD RIET-NEETHLING

At Mosselriver near Voëlklip which forms part of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a Cape Clawless Otter was spotted and photographed recently. Leon Steyn, environmental specialist of the Overstrand Municipality says these otters are not seen often as they hide away, but, he warns, once the otter has a family nearby, they will attack and could even drown a fully grown dog. Laura du Toit, who took these photographs, and her family from Stellenbosch have a holiday home in Hermanus and said they were very privileged to see the otter, as they are always in hiding. “It was amazing to see, but we were very

worried about the people walking around the area with their dogs swimming and running around without a leash.” Many people are not aware that there are otters at Mosselriver and around Schulpieshoek. They have also been spotted in Bettys Bay and other parts of the Overstrand region, but dog owners take note: According to www.science.smith.edu, the Cape clawless otter may use its tail to scoop objects within reach of its forefeet or for defence. “Fighting occurs rarely, but Cape clawless otters are fierce when cornered. When attacked on land, Cape clawless otters head for water. “When brought to bay, they can drag large dogs underwater and drown them.”

The Cape Claw less Otters can drown even a large dog, so be aware next time you take your dog for a swim. This otter was photo graphed in Mosselriver near Voëlklip recently. PHOTOS: LAURA DU TOIT

He died in hospital the following evening. Qhamani Commics Nobandla (36) had been working for Safe Security as an armed response officer for almost six years. Commics had just attended to a client’s alarm and was on his way to investigate a further activation, when he appeared to have been ambushed on his way to the second client. Another security company drove past his vehicle, which was still idling in Essex Street. They saw that the driver’s side window of the vehicle was open, but the vehicle appeared to be unoccupied. They then went to ask one of his colleagues who lives around the corner to investigate. The colleague found Commics in the vehicle, with a gunshot to his head. Commics’s fire-arm was missing and it was later established that it had been stolen. According to Sergeant Mbongeni Mazuthu, the motive for the shooting is still under investigation. Aqua Farm workers on strike on Wednesday 15 April.

PHOTO: JANHENDRIK COETZER

Settlement reached after week long strike JAN-HENDRIK COETZER Workers at Aqua Farm, near the new harbour, went on strike from 14 to 20 April after their demands for a better wage increase could not be met. The wage negotiations started in January last year after the company offered a 5% increase across the board while the employees demanded 11%. According to Henry Linnert, provincial organiser for the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), a settlement has been agreed upon. “Between ourselves and the employer we agreed on a wage increase of 7,25%. Aqua Farm also confirmed that the wage increase will be back-dated to March last year. The workers are satisfied with the settlement and

they are all back at work.” Jacques du Plessis, managing director of Aqua Farm, says they are happy with the settlement and that it didn’t really affect business. “Initially we offered 7% with two extra family responsibility leave days, which would have added up to about 7,25% in any case. But the workers felt they wanted the money instead. “This strike was an experience for us, seeing that it was the first one in our 20 years’ existence. “With management joining about 10 workers that do not belong to the union, we managed fine. It's just sad that some of these members were intimidated during the strike.”

Petrol bomb sets house alight A wendy house was set alight with a petrol bomb on Sunday evening 19 April in Mount Pleasant. An elderly woman was woken up by her grandson’s friends to tell her someone had thrown a petrol bomb at the wendy house in their yard in Madeliefie Street at around 23:00. The wendy house and everything in it was destroyed. A 35-year-old man was arrested for the incident.

Early the next morning, the Hermanus Police were called to the same address, after several gun shots rang out in front of the elderly woman’s house at about 06:30. Her 28-year-old grandson had woken up from the gun shots and escaped through the back door. The suspect fled the scene after firing a number of shots. This suspect is still at large and police are investigating a case of attempted murder.

KERRY VAN RENSBURG

Munisipaliteit bekyk tans tenders vir Milkwood-restaurant in Onrus

JAN-HENDRIK COETZER

It was exceptionally low tide at Voëlklip beach on Friday 17 April when three early morning swimmers had a close encounter with a shark. Jock Sparks, who swims throughout the year, and two other regular swimmers, were between waist and chest deep in the water when they saw “a rather large fin”. Sparks says: “It was definitely a big shark.” He and his two friends beat a hasty retreat back to the shore. He reckons the shark was about 90 metres out from the water’s edge. Sparks says it can be dangerous to swim too far out when the tide is so low, as it takes you further from the shore than usual. It was so far out on Friday, that the three swimmers were further out than the adjacent reef points. “You are virtually swimming in their territory,” he says. Sparks, who knows the water well, one of his passions being off-shore yachting, says 70% and more of shark attacks in the Western Cape occur in shallow water, and swimmers should be extra cautious swimming so far out in the sea when the tide is very low.

ferent types of workshops, each lasting two to three days: In Journey through a Rainbow with Monique Day-Wilde, participants will be encouraged to paint with spontaneity and intuition. Pieter Vermaak, well-known local artist and teacher, welcomes beginners or established artists to his three-day workshop, Celebrate Oils. This workshop will be presented in his gallery in Onrus. In Focus on Landscape, a two-day workshop, Sue Kemp will explain a contemporary approach to painting landscapes and how to introduce wonderful, lively colour into your paintings. The complete programme of shorter workshops can be explored on the website: www.hermanusfynarts.co.za. ) Early bird ticket sales are well underway and will continue until 30 April, when full price tickets kick in. Sales will continue at both Hermanus Tourism and on Webtickets. Ataraxia’s fine wines The UK Decanter magazine ranked Ataraxia’s Chardonnay 2013 as one of the most ‘Outstanding’ wines after an internal search to find the best Chardonnays outside of Burgundy. Editorial staff selected their choice of 80 Chardonnays, and a panel of three respected wine writers and judges, Steven Spurrier, Jasper Morris MW and Stephan Brook, selected their Top 32, of which 13 were deemed to be worthy of an ‘outstanding’ rating. The findings were published in the March issue of UK Decanter. In the April issue Ataraxia’s Serenity 2009 featured as the ‘Must-try red of the Month’. The insert reads: “Kevin Grant makes some of the Cape’s finest Chardonnay, but this wine (and an upcoming Pinot noir) shows his magic with reds too. Serene indeed.”

) OBLIWITZ OOK DEEL VAN LEMM’S SE GESKIEDENIS: Mnr. ) CALLING ALL MUSICIANS: Do you play a musical instrument or sing? If you would like to become part of an ensemble, please contact Roger Summers at 028 312 4706.

NATURE MATTERS: We all know that tonnes of abalone are harvested, mostly illegally, every year. But did you know that overfishing also has a direct impact on the numbers of wild abalone? Top predator fish eat juvenile rock lobster. When the large fish are removed by overfishing, rock lobsters multiply and move in from the west coast and eat all the sea urchins. Sea urchins are very im portant to juvenile abalone. They pro vide, amongst other things, a safe place for them under their spines. Without their protection, the abalone get eaten by small fish and other predators and fewer reach maturity. To suggest topics of inter est contact wcc@ocf.org.za.

Catch the Walker Bay Xtreme action Excitement is growing for the first ever Walker Bay Xtreme sports festival which will take place in Hermanus next weekend, from 1 - 3 May. Sportsmen and women will compete in a variety of extreme challenges often on unique tracks and courses from the centre of town, along the cliff path and other areas where spectators can watch all the action. Items on the programme include open water swimming from the new to the Old Harbour, urban circuit cycling, cliff path running, triathlon, marathon, paragliding, stand-up sea paddling, cross fit challenge, strong man competition, foot-up trails as well as kids challenges and live music entertainment. Rick Oosthuizen of the Hermanus Business Chamber, which is presenting this event with the Hermanus Seaand-Sand Institute, says that interest in this first Walker Bay Xtreme sports exceeds expectations. “We have consulted some of the most knowledgeable sport professionals and administrators to help with the planning of the various items, the routes, real-time maximum spectator value and entertainment. “Based on the reaction we have received up till now, Hermanus is in for a matchless weekend of endurance, excitement and fun. “For instance, the 2,5 km Xtreme open water swimming between the two harbours was planned to enable spectators to watch the whole race from the cliff path. Likewise, the 800 meter urban circuit cycling race on a track which includes entering and exiting the Old Harbour, was also planned to offer ultimate spectator value, in Monaco Grand Prix style, right in the center of town. “After elimination heats on 1 and 2 May, this Xtreme race with R20 000 prize money for the winners, climaxes with the final on Saturday afternoon,” he said. Apart from fun programmes for kids, the Walker Bay Xtreme music festival on Friday and Saturday night promises maximum entertainment with artists like Francois Van Coke, aKING, Frank Freeman, the Albert Frost Trio, Ryno Velvet and Basson Laubscher & The Violent Free Peace in the line-up. ) The full programme for the weekend is available on www.walkerbayxtreme.com. Entries can also be made on this website.

Matriekdinee ’n groot sukses ten spyte van beurtkrag JANINE VD NEETHLING

RIET-

Vrydagaand was dit ’n aand vir mooi rokke, netjiese pakke, uithalerkos en etiket by Hoërskool Hermanus se matriekdinee. Die viergangdinee was ’n formele affêre.

Appeal for pics of Hermanus back then EDITORIAL COMMENT Spotlight shines on the Overstrand With Gansbaai selected as Overall Winner at the African Responsible Tourism awards function in Cape Town, and the mayor scooping a Star Performer award in the councillor category, the Overstrand has re ally been enjoying its moment in the spot light this week. Grootbos and Marine Dynamics were al so recognised for their ongoing contribu tion to Responsible Tourism. The common thread shared by all these award winners is consistent hard work and being dedicated to improving the lives of others. Despite a worldwide perspective, these winners have not lost sight of what is impor tant to the local communities in their area.

Time to ‘heal the divisions and tensions’ I was disturbed by the tone of the front page article about Kidbrook in the 02 April issue of the Hermanus Times. Before we even had a chance to read the details of the case, we read the opinions on the character of Mr Walton In passing judgment, the Honourable Judge Binns-Ward had acknowledged that Mr Walton had played an important and central role in the establishment and on-going administration of Kidbrook Place, and that his efforts are highly regarded and appreciated by a significant number of the life rights holders. He went on to say, in removing Mr Walton as a trustee, that unresolved issues in relation to the discharge of Mr Walton’s function as a trustee needed to be laid to rest. It was to be hoped that now the court case is over and judgment has been pronounced, the trustees and committee members could get on with the task of healing the divisions and tensions that have arisen as a result of the court case, and re-establishing the peaceful atmosphere that made Kidbrooke Place such a sought after place of retirement. I was concerned therefore to read in two letters to the editor in the 16 April issue, that there are those who are not content to lay the matter to rest, but, are now questioning the integrity of other trust members.

I am preparing an audio-visual presentation about Voëlklip for FynArts in June. I want to make an appeal to readers who may have photographs of Voëlklip from the period 1920 to 1970 to contact me. I will come to see the items and, with your permission, use some in the presentation. Scenes (or film) of holidays on Voëlklip or Grotto beaches will be very suitable. But I am also looking for photographs of buildings that no longer exist: for example, Ham se Winkel, the old Post Office, Heine’s Grill, the Little Red Hen, the Nautilus, the Kingfisher, the Green House restaurant near De Mond, typical

first generation Voëlklip seaside cottages as built by the Moore family, the original Birkenhead Hotel, the Riviera Hotel at any time between its construction in 1904 and its burning down in 1944, the original cottage built by Miss Gordon just below the reservoir still known by her name. Don’t be too worried about the condition of the photographs. We can do wonders by scanning and electronic enhancement these days. Centre for special needs in Stanford needs support In the photo is our son Sam whom we tragically lost in February 2013, and that will break our hearts forever. Clever, sweet, smiling Super Sam. The one thing that makes it bearable is the knowledge that there is a purpose to all of it, and that is what drives us now. Sam’s older brother Jack has special needs, and we are in the process of opening a school and therapy centre in our village of Stanford in Sam’s honour. We aim to help children who are not coping in the mainstream to reach their full potential in a loving environment. To find out more about the plan, you can read my latest blogpost called The Butterfly Centre on www.crazybutterflylady.wordpress.com. To realise this dream and open on Sam’s birthday on 20 July as planned, we need to raise at least R72 000 by the end of May. Please consider making a direct donation to The Butterfly Foundation, ABSA , Hermanus, Account number 930 6520 181 (under the auspices of Food 4 Thought NPC 2012/063692/08). No amount is too small. Thank you for doing your bit to honour a life which, although all too brief, continues to mean so much to so many. Butterfly blessings to you, always.

Werk jou alarmstelsel? Jou hond is hier ’n goeie helper; hy/sy hoor beter as ’n mens! 2. Jy moet jou en jou familie afsluit in jou versterkte (diefwering, versterkte deur) slaap- of anderkamerenjouselfoonmetdienommervan jou sekuriteitsfirma byderhand. 3.

Briewe Letters

23 April, 2015

A sober Kidbrooke perspective Regarding your article and letters published in the Hermanus Times of 2 April and 16 April: After three years of enduring the political warfare being conducted at Kidbrooke Village, I feel it imperative to introduce sanity into this debacle. If there is to be any hope of ending our lives in harmony, peace and dignity in the place we chose, I would suggest inflammatory rumour-mongering be avoided, powerplay be abandoned and vilification of the integrity and character of essentially good people be shunned. Steady hands and wise minds are needed to keep the village on a sustainable course – people with expertise in the intricate management demands of running a village such as ours – where nearly half of residents are aged between 80 and 100 years, with all the attendant mental and physical frailties; people willing to

hold firm and calm in the place of unrelenting provocation and verbal attack. I refer to the two trustees now being targeted as they stand in the way of the ambitions of the management committee. It is intolerable to see, printed in letters to your paper, insinuations that the trustees have no integrity, and have “a hidden agenda”. It has been apparent from the very start that the committee had a long-term plan to first take control of the management of the village, and then to take control of the trust and its funds. While it is acceptable that they represent the interests of the Life Right Holders in the everyday running of the village, and act in an advisory capacity to the trust, it is unacceptable that the same people also control the funds held in the trust. It is imperative that the trust be

run independently. A few facts: 1. The trust funds are sound, and have accumulated over the years, having been wisely invested. 2. Annually, these funds subsidise meals, bus service, basic health care and resident’s levies. Nowhere else could residents enjoy comparable living standards as affordably, where village infrastructure is also maintained to a high standard. 3. To suggest further reduction of levies from an already substantially subsidised rate would endanger the future health of the trust funds. (Without this annual subsidisation the current levies would have had to rise 30% this year alone to meet expenditure). It would indeed, to use Ms Baker’s words, put the village at risk of “going under”. 4.The trust is by law an independent body set up to safeguard the financial stability of the village.

At a special general meeting in December 2013, a majority of residents opted for arbitration or mediation to find a more fitting manner of redressing these irregularities without incurring fruitless legal costs and unwarranted defamation of essentially sound individuals. This was however ignored, and at a subsequent meeting, the committee, after intensive lobbying, succeeded in gaining a majority vote to continue legal action against Norman Walton. As is known, Walton was found not to have fully understood his fiduciary responsibilities as a trustee, but not with any criminal intent to enrich himself at the expense of the village. He has been removed as a trustee and required to pay all legal costs. While your front-page article of HT dated 2 April 2015 headlined “Kidbrooke kingpin dethroned”

11

gave a fair summary of Judge BinnsWard’s verdict, it unfortunately sensationalised this vendetta against Walton. There are clear signs that this vendetta is now being extended to the Hudd trustees, the very people we rely on to restore peace to Kidbrooke, and to safeguard the health of the trust funds. Balanced minds are urgently needed, not overheated rhetoric. We need protection from such sustained onslaught, so destructive to our physical and mental health and well-being as an ageing community. Wise minds could perhaps introduce legal requirements to look first to procedures such as arbitration or mediation in such instances, avoiding such distressing consequences to the elderly.

GRIEVING KIDBROOKE RESIDENT

With the onset of winter we can expect cooler weather together with clouds over the weekend. Minimum temperatures of 15 and a high of 23 degrees are forecast.

eers ’n paar druppels (minder as 1 mm) verwag.

Stony Point Eco Centre officially launched KERRY VAN RENSBURG

It was a day of celebration at the Stony Point Eco Centre in Betty’s Bay on Friday 10 April, when National Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom officially launched and handed over the recently upgraded facilities positioned at this popular tourist destination. The Stony Point Eco Centre, which includes a themed visitor information centre, a restaurant called On the Edge and a heritage site pointing to the history of whaling at Stony Point, was constructed by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Overstrand Municipality. This initiative is solely owned by the members of the Mooiuitsig community. It is envisaged that the project will create employment opportunities and develop a vibrant, equitable and sustainable tourism economy that will assist the local community to share in the benefits of tourism. Minister Hanekom said the occasion was a celebration of people and communities: “This is about hard-working people who make things happen. They need to be applaud-

ed and their story needs to be told.” He said it was an opportunity “to show off our local talent and diversity”, and used the young Marimba band members from Handevat Marimba’s as an example. He spoke about the “inglorious past”, using the whaling station as an example, and said: “The challenge is to rise from an inglorious past to a glorious future.” Hanekom also said: “What we want is sustainable positive transformation.” He concluded by saying that everyone wants to see this project succeed.” Cllr Lisel Krige said the development of the Stoney Point Eco Centre has been a long and bumpy journey. A Betty’s Bay resident herself, she says: “Stony Point is special to us and we are thankful that the Department of Tourism hung in there with this project.” Mayor Nicolette Botha Guthrie said: “This is the most beautiful place in the country and I encourage you all to buy houses here.” Speaking for the Mooiuitsig Community Trust, Magrietha de Bruin said: “Without all the role players this project would not have materialised. This is a project for the future, it is our legacy. Our children’s children will benefit from this economic initiative.”

During a walk along the boardwalk to view the penguins at Stony Point, Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom goodnaturedly quizzed the two CapeNa ture ecoguides, Odes leigh Samuels (left) and Vuyokazi Makhalima (right), stationed along the route, about the Afri can penguins that have made Stony Point a pop ular tourist attraction.

The Zwelihle Commercial Development in Sisulu Street. The municipality’s Administra tion of Immovable Property Policy has now been amended, the building will be reno vated and a tender process for the lease of the shops in this facility should be under way by the end of April 2015.

OM moves forward on LED business sites in Zwelihle KERRY VAN RENSBURG The current status of two business premises in Zwelihle earmarked for local economic development (LED)purposes, was recently addressed by the Overstrand Municipality (OM). Roderick Williams, director: community services at OM, says all the preparation to start the maintenance work on the Zwelihle commercial development, near Zwelihle Primary School, has been done already. “We are waiting for the delivery of the necessary materials now, before we can start with the maintenance work with regards to plumbing, fixing of doors, painting where needed, and electrical work. “We should be able to start with this during April, and it is envisaged that the work should take a calendar month to complete.” Coenie Groenewald, the OM’s municipal manager says council provided funding for the renovation of this development during its appropriation budget on 25 February 2015. He confirms that the Administration of Immovable Property Policy has been amended and adopted by council. Tender documents for the lease of the property are currently being compiled and such tenders are to be invited before the end of April 2015, where after a due adjudication process is to be followed. The amended policy will help ensure that specific municipal buildings – meant for the economic benefit of the residents of Zwelihle, in this case – would govern the tender process. which turned violent, in October 2013. Groenewald saysrepairs tothe Swartdam Road Development can only take place once the insurance company, in this case SASRIA, has considered the municipality’s claim. “I am informed that the claim is in the final stages of consideration and that payment should follow soon,” assures Groenewald. Contractors will then be appointed to do the restoration work.

This picture of Sara de Villiers was taken during her kajak trip.

Hermanus – a town like no other Sara de Villiers was one of the lucky locals who won a sea kayak trip with Walker Bay Adventures. Her experience prompted her to pen this letter and poem, in appreciation of Hermanus. “ What an incredible experience. Together with our amazing marine guide, Riaan, we set off to explore the many wonders of Walker Bay. “We were extremely blessed to encounter dolphins and seals, while the bay was (fortunately) a gloriously calm “lake” on the day. Thank you Herman de Vries and your team for making one of my “bucket list” items a reality. “This type of community spirit is yet another example of the warm welcome we’ve experienced since relocating to Hermanus in October last year. “Every day we are amazed at the friendly, supportive, helpful and enthusiastic attitude of the phenomenal folk in this area – we are indeed very fortunate to live, work and relax in the best town in the world. Deep, briny blue, unfathomable depths – so vast and mysterious. At times serene, yet in a split second stormy, home to a myriad of magical creatures. On the surface, small yellow blobs bob, cleaving their way through the inky waters, feeling fragile, yet so fascinated by the frenetic activity of birds, whales, dolphins and the perpetual motion of the ocean… Guided by Riaan, inspired by the salt, the spindrift and the sweet smell of adventure, we glide forth…enveloped by Mother Nature’s majesty and deeply awed by her infinite wonder.

Algemeen General

Prof John de Gruchy talking to the group Just Get On With It on Friday at Harbour Rock.

Prof De Gruchy talks about loss The group that gathered for the monthly Get On With It meeting at the Harbour Rock restaurant on Friday 10 April, was addressed by guest speaker, Professor John de Gruchy, a local resident, author and theologian. De Gruchy is the founder and editor emeritus of The Journal of Theology for Southern Africa; a Hulsean lecturer at Cambridge and chair of Christian Studies for Robert Selby Taylor. At Friday’s meeting, De Gruchy shared his experience of loss, as a man who lost his son in a drowning accident. It was clear that all the parents present appreciated his honesty. He talked about the grieving process and lessons it provided, not as an academic, but as a pilgrim of the journey of life. He reminded those present that grief is a part of life that you cannot avoid. In the context of “getting on with it”, he was very practical: After and during grief, you have to get up every morning and decide to live that day as a gift from God. This message is not new, but it is appreciated as new when you hear it from a father who learned how important it is to end every telephone call with the best possible “good bye”. Prof De Gruchy wrote these inspiring words in a lecture dedicated to his son, Steve: “Hope, unlike wishful thinking, is realistic and open to the unforeseen because we cannot predict tomorrow. “But it does demand that we become creatively involved in making that which we hope for come about. Hope is fuelled by a passion for the possible.” Prof De Gruchy, who loves carpentry and labradors, is well known for his book, Led into Mystery. His latest publication is Sawdust and Soul, Conversations About Woodwork and Spirituality. The goal of Just Get On With It, is to identify, nurture and mentor children so that they can realise their full potential. The group endeavours to create opportunities for them and to encourage an economically active population across all communities of Hermanus. For more information about the Just Get on with It initiative, call Theo Krynauw on 082 654 4924. – JOHANN KRUGER

Hermanus Flyfishing to hold Open Day The Hermanus Fly-fishing Club will have their annual Open Day at the Zuiderkruis dam up in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on Sunday 26 April. The club would like to welcome fly-fishermen of all ages, particularly members, novices, juniors or those who have never tried the sport before. There will be a few fishing rods on loan and casting lessons or general fly-fishing advice will be available. The annual floating trophy will be awarded to the member angler who nets the most fish between 08:00 and the cut-off time of 12:00. Keen anglers can start fishing at 08:00, or otherwise arrival can be at your own leisure. Prizes will be awarded in a number of categories, including Ladies and Juniors. The club encourages anglers to bring their families along. There is plenty of open space to throw down a picnic blanket and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Braai facilities will also be provided. It is approximately 9 km from the Sandbaai robot on the right-hand side. There will be sign boards showing the way.

Hengel is haar passie JANINE VAN DER RIET-NEETHLING Visvang, oftewel hengel, is ’n sport waaraan menige Suid-Afrikaners deelneem. My passie het begin deurdat ek elke Saterdag saam met my pa see toe gegaan het as hy gaan hengel. Dit het my vir so lekker gelyk dat ek besluit het om dit self ook te doen. 2. My grootste vis was ’n Koeihaai van 20 kg wat ek by ’n interklubkompetisie by

Agulhas gevang het. 3. Raad vir ander hengelaars? Weet hoe om die water te lees. Leer ken jou getye. Die see is niemand se speelmaat nie. 5. Die beste vis om te vang? Vir my is dit ’n galjoen.

DOGS want ‘Brucie’ to fall Kleinmond - Individual Stableford (Log) / 4BBB: The Countback King finally relinquished his title after suffering an ignominious victory in a count-out on Tuesday. This follows a glorious reign of defeats stretching back years. His statue has been removed from its plinth. His re-branding as “Brucie” is not going well and has already prompted a “Brucie Must Fall” campaign.

The contest’s loser was Mr. Hacker whose only statue is in County Cork where he is the sole survivor of the great potato famine. Third place Dougal MacRoss was spotted having photographs taken of him and the Jolly Green Giant – thought to be preparations for a new iconic statue “Size Doesn’t Matter”. Last place Laurie, so new that he doesn’t yet have a nickname, looks unlikely to get his own statue.

Stableford: 37 Jon Forsyth, Tony Hackett; 36 Doug Ross; 35 Mannes van Zyl, Dave Rade; 33 Dave Brittain; 32 Art Rae; 31 Ian Newman, Johan de Jager; 30 Alan Calder, Hugh Frangs; 29 John Cheesbrough, Dave Smith, Geoff Crowther, Gordon Wilson; 28 Koos Roelofse, Sam Seal; 27 Pat Dewil, Chris Martin; 26 Michel Maury, Deon Pheiffer, Fred Garrett; 25 Trevor Vaughan, Alan Smith; 22 Laurie Tonner, 4BBB: 45 Jon Forsyth / Tony Hackett. – DAVE SMITH

The temperatures have definitely dropped a little and for those who don’t like to play golf in high heat, it is now perfect to give those clubs an airing. This week we are glad to report that the greens are on the mend thanks to a huge effort by STM. The Hermanus Golf Club is hosting the Boland Open next week from 27–29 April. Ladies Day: Last Tuesday 42 ladies enjoyed an individual stableford. The weather played ball and it was a super day. Coming out on top was Lou McIntosh with a terrific solo 43 points, and coming second was Wanda Venter with 41 points. Men’s Day: Last Wednesday saw 104 gents competing in an individual stableford format. There was also a cup up for grabs, the Barbour Cup. This cup was presented to the club by Hugh Barbour in 1953 and is a competition for the over 65s. The winners of both the club competition and the Barbour Cup, was an old

campaigner Billy Boshoff on a tremendous 43 points, and second place went to the fisherman Greg Donald on 42 points. Well played, gents. There were only 5 two clubs and the ball pool paid to 39. Saturday: 115 players enjoyed the day, sponsored by Helderview BMW. The format was a betterball stableford and the victors on the East course were Neil Malan and Reinhardt Buhr, who amassed a huge 47 points. The kings of the North course were Carl Grobler and Sarel Ackerman with 45 points. There were 6 two clubs and the ball pool paid to 43. League Results: This week the club played both leagues but didn’t fare too well in either. The Kruger team lost 5:3 to Montagu at home and the Brodie team lost by the same margin at home against Kleinmond. Well done to both Montagu and Kleinmond. Until next week, keep calm and go golfing.

The All Cape is undoubtedly the tournament that most bowlers eagerly anticipate, being regarded as the “competitive, friendly and party competition”. Two Hermanus teams set off for Port Elizabeth on Friday 10 April to play in the Personal Trust/ Eastern Province Bowls 2015 All Cape Bowls Tournament. Tish Bryce (skip) and her team, Ena Linde as 3rd, Jean Greyling as 2nd and Sonja Kruger as lead, competed in Section 1, which they won. They went on to the play offs but sadly lost to George, the overall winner of the All Cape 2015. The relatively new and young team of Elsie McGeogh (skip), Lorna Eglin (3rd), Pam Bruce-Brand (2nd) and Stephanie Crause (lead) played in Section 9 and came third in their section. They played against nine teams and peeled against the team who eventually came first (and was last year’s overall winners), The Woods. For this young team from Hermanus it was their first introduction into the fantastic spirit that prevails at this prestigious event.

schel Vermaak (1 strafskop) en Lesley Felix (1 drie). Die eindtelling was 8-24. – W.C.M. GIBSON

CRICKET: BUSINESS LEAGUE

Top Plan and The Locals crowned champions The finals day of the 13th Pennypinchers Business cricket league produced some outstanding action at the Sir Div Oval. The day hosted seven matches and superb cricket was on offer. The standard of this tournament is certainly growing each season. The participating teams were Hermanus Hockey Club, Video & TV Clinic, Klip Drifters, Tipples, The Wackers, The Outcast, Kwaggas, Table Tigers, Roaring 40s, The Chokers, Fusion, The Locals, Top Plan, Table Tigers and Hermanus Towing The Over 35s final This final was definitely the game of the season with Top Plan against Hermanus Towing. Hermanus Towing had been the most successful team in the tournament. Top Plan batted first and started rather slowly but with wickets in hand most teams are hard to stop when things start going their way. In the end Top Plan scored 89 runs in 8 overs with De Wet Joubert and Tommy Hough doing most of the damage in the end. Hermanus Towing’s reply did not start well with some early wickets, but Marquin Lukas started an attack and it almost got them to the finish line Some superb bowling and outstanding fielding by Graham Krige was the turning point and for those who were spectators were treated with a memorable catch in the end to give victory to Top Plan by a mere 4 runs.

Main final The main final was between arch rivals Fusion and The Locals, both teams previous winners with Fusion the defending champions. With some heavy mist coming in the match had to be reduced from 16 overs each to 12 overs each. The Locals found form with Pierre Kriel smashing the ball to all corners of the field and soon all the other batsman did so with Divan de Witt also punishing the loose bowling. The Locals scored 129 runs in 12 overs and in any form of the game it is almost impossible to get. The Fusion team never gave up and they showed why they had bragging rights for a year as they kept up with the run-rate each over. At one stage they were even better than the required rate. With 30 runs to get in 12 balls it would have seemed all was lost for the Fusion team but Philip Oliphant made life difficult for The Locals and kept the game alive. With 6 runs required off the last ball one could not have scripted the final any better. In the end too much needed to be done and victory went to the new champions The Locals. Congratulations to all the winners and also a very big thank you to our sponsors Pennypinchers and all the relevant people that played a part in making this tournament a huge success. The new entries for the coming season will be open soon. – JAN-HENDRIK KOEGELENBERG
