HIGH VOLTAGE LINES DAMAGED: 70 000 RESIDENTS WERE AFFECTED

Overstranders without power for 19 hours It took four days to contain the fire.

PHOTO: CILENE BEKKER

JANINE VAN DER RIETNEETHLING A devastating fire left more than 70 000 Overstrand residents without electricity for more than 17 hours, after five high voltage lines, supplying electricity to the Overstrand area, were destroyed. Areas from Fisherhaven to Die Damme on the other side of Gansbaai were affected. According to Lester Smith, chief fire officer of the Overstrand Fire and Rescue, the fire started in Karwyderskraal, Bot River area on Friday around 13:00. Due to strong winds, the fire quickly spread to inaccessible and thick vegetation areas in the Hemel-en-Aarde-Valley.

“Because visibility was minimal, it was decided to call in aerial support,” Smith said. A spotter plane was also used to assist. The Incident Command Post (ICP) was established at Gee Whiz Farm near De Bos Dam and the area was divided into three divisions. Eleven fire engines, several landowners and Working on Fire ground teams were deployed into the divisions to help fight the fire line. Dr Sandy Waddingham from the Hemel ’n Aarde Stud Farm, together with colleagues, neighbours and friends helped to move more than 80 horses down the mountain to Onrus River’s side as precaution when it seemed the fire could head towards

the Hemel ’n Aarde Stud Farm and Oldlands Stud Farm in the valley. Irrigation systems were also switched on on many farms and homeowners hosed down roofs as a further precaution. On Sunday 22 March at 03:00 the fire was reported to be contained and the only casualties sustained were those of the voltage lines. It was during this time that the Overstrand’s electricity supply was cut off. Later on Sunday the fire was still contained but not yet brought under control. The town on Sunday morning was relatively busy as many people without generators or gas stoves headed into the CBD for fresh coffee and something to eat.

Some restaurants were open and could provide patrons with food and drinks. Most of the retail shops in the CBD were closed for business on Sunday morning, as they could not accommodate sales during the power failure. By Sunday evening the power to the affected areas was restored at different times, 20:20 for Hawston and Vermont and 21:45 for Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai. “The size of the area burnt is estimated to be 332 hectares on Sunday. “By Monday evening, the Incident Command Post was still open and all operational staff were still busy at the fire line. On Tuesday the fire remained contained,” Smith said.

All of Hermanus, Stanford, Vermont, Gansbaai, Fisherhaven and Hawston were without a power supply from 03:00 on Sunday 22 March until late Sunday evening. This was due to the veld fires that damaged Eskom 66 kV overhead power lines. According to a statement released by Eskom, their technical staff could not immediately access the area because of raging fires, strong winds, smoke and fire brigade activities. “When the area was safe, Eskom’s technical staff immediately started with all the necessary reconstruction of the burnt structures. They used additional Eskom construction teams and contractors to rebuild the burnt structures enabling restoration to the affected areas. “After many hours of gruelling work, the power to the affected areas was restored at different times – 20:20 for Hawston and Vermont, and 21:45 for Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai. “Under normal circumstances it would have taken up to six days to source the materials, assemble and reconstruct the structures.

Eskom worked around the clock to restore power after the fire. They also used additional Eskom construction teams and contractors to rebuild the structures needed to restore power to the affected areas. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED “Throughout the day and during construction the fires kept flaring up, making the working conditions extremely difficult for the teams. “Eskom would like to thank the communities for the positive manner in which they have responded and supported our teams throughout the day,” the statement concluded.

The red line shows the area where the Walker Bay Xtreme will take place.

Get ready for the Walker Bay Xtreme JANHENDRIK COETZER Over the long weekend of Friday 1 May to Sunday 3 May all sport extremists who thrive on events that test their speed, strength, stamina and skill will be able to participate in the first ever Sports Festival right here in Hermanus. The Walker Bay Xtreme is mainly a sports festival offering events like swimming, running, cycling, triathlon, cross fit challenge, marathon, paragliding, strongman competition, foot up trails and stand up paddling. Besides the wide variety of sporting challenges, the festival will also be a family friendly weekend which will be packed with expo’s, stalls, live entertainment and fun events for the kids. Kids will be able to crawl and tumble in a play pit, get dirty in a mini mudder, test their muscles and balance in a troopers course, putting their strength to the test during a champs challenge, as well as enjoy a variety of garden games such as a giant jenga, twister and bowls. The hosting of a sport festival in Herma-

nus first came about when Sparks Esterhuizen, founder of the Sea-and-Sand Institute, came up with the idea in 2008. To put this idea into practice, Rick Oosthuyzen, local businessman and owner of Tapas Restaurant, took the negotiations further with all relevant parties, and now the first ever sport festival in Hermanus is set to happen. The Hermanus Business Chamber and the Overstrand Muncipality have given the event a thumbs up. According to Oosthuyzen all the events will happen in the centre of town in and around the Old Harbour. “This will make it possible for family members and friends to also join in the fun and watch participants compete. With challenges like cycling and running, both the start and finish will be at the Old Harbour.” Oosthuyzen says that this event will help stimulate business in Hermanus over a quiet period. “It will attract athletes, spectators and families from all over to visit our town when we start to feel the economic pinch at the start of winter.” For enquiries Rick Oosthuyzen can be contacted on 083 675 7859.

On 1 April electricity will go up by 12.69% for those households who receive their electricity directly from Eskom. This is the latest news from Eskom regarding the 2015/16 electricity tariffs approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA). Households who received their electricity from the Overstrand Municipality, will pay 14.25% more for power as from 1 July. Eskom says further increases can be expected before the end of the 2015/16 financial year. On Friday 20 March Eskom issued a statement concerning their tariff increase and further potential adjustments: “Eskom confirms that the price increase to be implemented on 1 April to Eskom direct customers is still 12.69% and for municipalities will be 14.25% from 1 July. “Eskom’s current financial position, as a result of historical non-cost reflective tariffs and the lag in recovery of eligi-

ble expenditure, does not afford Eskom’s balance sheet the ability to pre-fund further costs that are necessitated by a constrained power system, such as shortterm power purchases from independent power producers and municipal generators and the increased use of open-cycle gas turbines. “These constraints have necessitated Eskom to explore options for a further review of tariff increases for the 2015/16 financial year. Submissions in terms of the Multi-year Price Determination (MYPD) methodology have been made to NERSA in this regard. “Further, the announcement by the Minister of Finance in the Budget Speech of the proposed increase in the environmental levy is yet to be promulgated. “This will have an impact on the required tariff and as such Eskom will need an adjustment in terms of the tariffs as a result of the levy.” It is estimated that Eskom requires at least a 9.58% further price adjustment, resulting in a possible total increase of between 22 and 24% to the consumer.

gewonder of hulle my gaan doodmaak.”

Net so ’n wasige, onrealistiese gevoel.

) The Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse ladies managed to raise a massive total of R417 556,33 for the Hermanus Night Shelter. This was announced at ELL Restaurant on the farm Spookfontein on Tuesday evening.

If you saw chefs in their white jackets dashing between shop aisles and running through town last Wednesday, they were taking part in an “Amazing Race” competition. Warwick’s Chef School arranged a team-building day for their current students, where they had to collect certain clues. “After a run up Hoy’s Koppie, where the first clue was hidden, the chefs made their way to Gateway Superspar to identify certain meat cuts under the watchful eye of butcher Colin,” explains Kevin and Sumien Warwick. They also had to do a recipe costing, using the products and pricing in the shop. Once teams had correctly worked out the costing, they had to take their answer to Veronia at Core Catering, who supplied them with their next clue. From there they headed to town and received a traditional Dutch delicacy prepared by Anton at the Fisherman’s Cottage, where they had to identify the core ingredients in the dish. Steady hands and concentration were then needed when they received a cup of coffee which they had to carry all the way to the Windsor Hotel. If no drop was spilt, they could receive their next clue. The teams then had to take a room service tray and deliver it to a specif-

EDITORIAL COMMENT Power to the people not Load shedding is an annoying South African reality. And although we were all left without power on Sunday because poles were dam aged in the most recent fire in our area, we have to thank Eskom for going the extra mile to fix the poles and restore our power within 18 hours, and not the normal, estimated six days. A fire like this though exacerbates the power problems we are facing. In the coming week and months, we are going to be slapped with huge increases in electricity tariffs, courtesy of Eskom. They want us, humble households and small busi ness owners, to use less electricity, as there is not enough power to go round. They want us to pay more for a service that does not improve. Those of us who are dependent on the na tional power source, are being held to ran som by Eskom. And their primary concern, really, is keeping the huge industries in the country well supplied. There may be light at the end of the tunnel if we switch on to alternative energy, if we have not done so already.

Walk for a Dream KKNK Hermanus Staan Saam (HSS) continues striving to expand its programmes and offerings to the community. We invite you to take part in our Walk for a Dream KKNK fund-raiser on Monday 30 March to support the dreams of a local musician Edian Barnard, who was accepted to perform at the annual KKNK music festival. It is our mission to help those in need. In order to meet our mission and provide services in our community, we rely on the generosity of individuals and businesses for support. Without the assistance of communityminded individuals, we wouldn’t be able to come to the aid of those in need. Our goal is to help Edian Barnard financially to be able to perform at the KKNK. A percentage of funds raised will go to HSS to continue its support of local families and those in need. The starting line for Walk for a Dream KKNK will be at Betty’s Bay @ 05:00. Members of HSS will be walking with Edian Barnard, and Miss T from Whale Coast 96 FM will be there to take photographs. Remember that every donation makes a difference, regardless of its size. Edian Barnard will take along his guitar and will stop and play at shops and restaurants along the way. For more info contact Theresa on 076 872 2843 or Tronel Meintjies on 076 909 0520.

NATURE MATTERS: Did you know...? The common rain spider (Palystes superciliosus) is native to Southern Africa. They are called rain spiders because they enter homes before it rains to prey on geckos. After mating, the female constructs a round egg sac of silk, which she guards aggressively until the spiderlings hatch inside the protective sac and chew their way out. Their large size, combined with the yellow and black banding on the underside of the legs, gives them a fearsome appearance, but their bite is no worse than a bee sting and will heal quickly. The photos on the right show the top view and the underside of the rain spider. Chaos and lawlessness at new harbour Both my wife and I have lived in Hermanus for years and we both work in the new harbour in a space that looks out directly onto the harbour wall. As we often work night shifts, we and our colleagues have ample time to observe fishing activity on the wall. We love seeing locals take initiative to feed themselves and their families for the mere price of a fishing permit and some very basic tackle. Therefore, we took great pleasure in the occurrence of the recent mackerel ‘run’, during which a large school of Chub Mackerel entered the harbour. Not only is this a fantastic natural phenomenon to witness (this was the first time in approximately twenty years that it had occurred), but it also provided countless people with a guaranteed catch for the pan. However, news of the occurrence spread and subsequently more and more people flocked into the harbour in droves to fish. The situation quickly got out of hand. As there is no current bag limit on Chub Mackerel, hundreds of individuals took a semi-permanent seat on the harbour wall day and night, literally hauling away enormous bags reaching hip height, crammed full of fish – much more than several families could consume in months. It soon came to our knowledge that the majority of this colossal amount of fish was not being caught for personal consumption, but for illegal selling. To this end, the giant school of fish has been near eradicated within just a few weeks. Unfortunately, this was not the only irregularity taking place. Animal cruelty was rife – live fish being kicked around or stomped on by children and huge piles of juvenile “Maasbanker” left on the harbour wall to die. Young Cape Fur seals also come into the harbour to rest and hunt and it is a joy to watchthemsnoozingonlowpartsofthewall or playing in the water. However, when these seals entered the “territory” of individuals fishing from the wall, they were pelted with large rocks at close range.

It is illegal to kill and/or keep “Cape snoek” less than 60 cm in length. However, undersized snoek was repeatedly, and on a daily basis, caught and kept. Some individuals openly used small “spinner bait”, intended specifically for catching undersized snoek. Very young children (clearly under the age of ten), ran around on or fished from the harbour wall, unsupervised, often late into the night. Alcohol was regularly consumed, with the empty beer bottles (and countless cigarette butts) being tossed into the ocean. Individuals also didn’t bother to use the perfectly adequate toilet facilities, but instead just got up from their fishing spots to urinate into the water. More than once, fist fights broke out on the wall. Also, as no one could be bothered to clean up after themselves, the wall was a constant, stinking mess of rotting fish guts, unused bait and empty food containers, all on the doorsteps of the lower harbour restaurant and offices of the whale-watching charters and scuba schools. Unfortunately, none of the activities listed in this letter were isolated incidents, and literally happened on a daily basis and repeatedly during any one day or evening. During all this time, we witnessed inspectors on the harbour wall only a handful of times. This is a shining example of what an ultimate low point humanity can reach upon being presented with a rare and astonishing opportunity such as this. Moreover, this was by no means a situation where a few bad apples ruined the whole basket. This behaviour was the norm. This display screams of blatant disregard for any laws and total disrespect towards fellow harbour users. Mostly, this is a horrendous insult to the ocean that not only feeds, but also helps to keep our town alive. I would be grateful if the new harbour authorities and/or Nature Conservation could respond.

HERMANUS RESIDENT

Your article in the HT of 19 March titled “No to fine dining establishment” in Fisherhaven refers: I think the council is misguided in rejecting Mr Romer’s application to operate a fine dining establishment from his home, based on only two objections, amounting to approximately 0,25 % of the properties in Fisherhaven. I sincerely hope that when it comes to people objecting to the imminent rates increases (and council salaries), the same criteria will be applied. The clientele that the owners will be attracting are those with a higher disposable income, who will be mesmerised by the beauty of the area and can afford to buy property in the area, thereby injecting much needed cash into the coffers of the municipality. It is individuals like these, who are not indigent, that the municipality should be welcoming with open arms. I do not believe that the noise levels will carry on until all hours of the morning, as is the case with some houses that are let for the weekend. What amazes me is that the small area that has been zoned for business use has now, in most cases, become residential, as can be seen by the number of homes on these properties. The area that was zoned as a ‘botel’ has also been subdivided into residential units. This is probably so that more revenue can be generated for the council. I would rather have this establishment next to me than the shenanigans that go on at the public slipway.

Opgraderingswerk by Pick n Pay ontbloot ou stinkende drein Hoe dikwels (indien ooit) word die perseel-inspeksies by vleisverwerkingspersele, soos slaghuise, uitgevoer? Ek was self as eienaar/vleistegnikus vir

NATURE MATTERS: Did you know.....In the Western Cape there are not many dangerous scorpions. The only one of concern is the granulated thick-tailed scorpion Parabuthus granulates. It is large and dark yellow to brown in colour with a thick tail. This scorpion is responsible for most envenomations because they actively hunt prey at night and mostly sting people who walk around barefoot in the dark and inadvertently step on them. If there are many scorpions about it is prudent to check shoes before putting them on. Scorpions with thin tails and large pincers are seldom able to pierce human skin. PHOTO: BLACKWIDOW/INTERNET

Since the removal of walled refuse bins in Sandbaai without offering an alternative plan for weekenders or holiday home-owners, the problem of dumping on the pathways and elsewhere has escalated. Holiday home owners and others now place their refuse bags next to the bins at the Sandbaai beach parking area, which results in bags being emptied on the pathways and sea front. Home-owners do not know what to do with their refuse when leaving on a Sunday, as the bags in front of their homes indicate to a thief that no one is home. Poachers need the black bags for abalone and their bag of choice is garden refuse bags. Animals and desperate people are more interested in kitchen refuse. Surely this is not only a Sandbaai problem? Could the municipality not rent some of those small skips and place them at or near the Sandbaai hall over weekends and maybe also in high season? Permanent residents and those who use the V.O.S. path on a daily basis are fed up looking at this mess along pathways and having to make excuses to tourists. The Sandbaai East parking lot bins and surrounds have not been cleaned for more than two years. There is a rusted pole knee-height next to the path waiting for an injury to happen. Easter is here. Do the permanent residents have to deal with the problem after everyone has left?

ROY GROENEWALD

Response from the Overstrand Municipality: At a meeting held during midNovember last year, the ward committee of Ward 7 (Sandbaai and Hemel-en-Aarde Estate) unanimously agreed that the mini transfer station situated in Long Street, Sandbaai should be dismantled and removed in its entirety.

Originally instituted for the convenience of weekenders and occupants of holiday homes who had no place to leave their household refuse on departing, the mini transfer station never really succeeded in fulfilling this purpose and posed several operational challenges. Among others, permanent residents took to dumping building rubble, garden refuse and redundant furniture at the site – a practice that is not only illegal, but also attracts “scavengers” and causes “dumpers” to be harassed by people looking for hand-outs. Residents are reminded that household refuse should only be put out on the actual collection day. Those who let their homes from time to time should make arrangements with a neighbour/acquaintance to do so on behalf of holidaymakers/weekenders who depart prior to the official refuse collection day. All public bins are serviced three times per week. Note, too, that only one bag of garden refuse is permissible per household per collection day. All excess garden refuse and other “abnormal waste”, such as building rubble, redundant furniture, hazardous materials and discarded electronic equipment, must be transported to the main transfer station in Mbeki Street by the residents themselves. Mbeki Street is the new road that runs from Schulphoek Road to Swartdam Road, linking Mount Pleasant and Zwelihle. It is a pity that the complainant did not report the rusted pole as it might have received attention 2 years ago. Community involvement is encouraged as they are the eyes and ears and possibly become aware of problems long before the Municipality does. It would be appreciated if the person could provide the location of the rusted pole. Operational problems can be reported at: 028 313 8112.

Elke handbreedte is 10 grade.

Open letter to the Overstrand Municipality: We want the finedining restaurant in Fisherhaven

BUTTFREE TOWN: Have you spotted a few of these around town? This is an initiative from Whale Coast Conservation to help keep Hermanus beautiful and clean.

PHOTO: HERMANUS TOURISM

We, the undersigned residents of Fisherhaven, refer to the article in the Hermanus Times of 19 March, “No to home-based fine dining.” We would like to bring to your attention, that as Fisherhaveners, we want it! This is an absolute travesty for Fisherhaven. A fine-dining establishment, run by a highly esteemed, internationally recognised chef, would attract many people from far and wide. This is exactly what is needed in Fisherhaven, and we have no doubt it would positively impact on Fisherhaven. To our knowledge, the first of the two objections received was from a plot owner who obviously does not reside in Fisherhaven, and the second from a family planning to move overseas. Why should these objections take preference over what the greater majority of Fisherhaveners want? The reasons cited for non-approval are: 1.“It will impact on the privacy of surrounding property owners, increase noise levels and have a negative impact on residential character.” Response: The property has sufficient room for parking, which cannot be seen from

the road. The property is surrounded by established trees and foliage, so neighbours will not easily be disturbed. The establishment is Fine Dining, and may possibly play some background classical music, but certainly no trance music will be blaring into the night. Anyone who has been to the intended establishment will immediately enjoy the character and charm that Leo has created. 2.“Such an establishment is not in line with policy plans for the area.” Response: Are street vendors in line with policy plans for the area, as it appears to be acceptable to Council less than 100 m away? 3.“It would create an unwanted precedent, which would negatively impact the character of residential areas.” Response: Unfortunately the only unwanted precedent this has set, is that fewer business people will apply for business rights in the correct manner, and will instead trade without appropriate permission. We, the Fisherhaven people, ask you to correct this injustice to Leo Romer and his family, when his appeal is presented to you. We kindly request that, this time, his application does not take a year to be processed. The Fisherhaven people are waiting for the

establishment, which will undoubtedly have a positive effect on all aspects of our village.

Hospice golf day raises thousands Just like the strap-line of the Overstrand Hospice “No End to Caring”, businesses and individuals of our town again showed their generosity to support this important local charity. The Overstrand Hospice Charity Golf Day was held at the Hermanus Golf Club on Sunday 15 March. It was a great success, both in participation and in raising much needed income - a

whopping amount of R99 355! A full field comprising teams of four – two ladies and two men – competed for prizes and gifts all voluntarily donated by organisations within Hermanus. The Overstrand Hospice aims to provide comfort and dignity to those in the final stages of their lives. This is an important but costly service which relies entirely on voluntary income. Thank you to all involved. - JOHN PEARCE

At the well-attended AGM of the Hermanus History Society (HHS) on 16 March at the Windsor Hotel, an appeal was made to members to volunteer for specific projects and actions, archiving and research assistance. As Robin Lee, secretary, said: “Heritage is the relationship between you and the past. This means getting involved. There are many opportunities – far too many to be carried out by the Committee, to make history come alive to the residents of the Overstrand and to visitors and tourists.” Some of the projects include: creating Friends of Swallow Park; research for the HHS presentation at FynArts 2015; possible publication on the life of Berdine Luyt; reviving and managing the History Walks; and assistance with topics for talks/ articles/excursions. The membership subscriptions for 2016/2017 remain unchanged, namely: individual membership R80; family membership R120; country membership R25.

Of the 52 attendees at the Hermanus History Society AGM were Beverley Moore, Keith Kirkman, Angela Heslop (HHS chair), Delene Daneel and Dinkie Marais. Nominations for the new committee had been received and the following were declared elected unopposed: Chairperson: Angela Heslop, Secretary: Robin Lee, Treasurer: Michael Clark, committee members: Cilene Bekker, Elsabe Brink and Storm Kreusch. The meeting was followed by an audio-visual presentation by Angela on work she and her sister have undertaken for the Nati-

onal Museum in Botswana. The work related to a farm on which her family holidayed in the 1950s, which is now to be developed as an open-air museum that will depict the colonial lifestyle in Botswana. ) To become a member of the HHS, contact Angela Heslop at 0 028 312 1663 / aheslop@hermanus.co.za; or Robin Lee at 0 028 312 4072 / robinlee@hermanus.co.za

14 HermanusTimes Youth Environment Programme launched in Gansbaai

Algemeen General

26 March, 2015

“The programme is designed for our youth and for the benefit of the environment,” said Sheraine van Wyk, Whale Coast Conservation eco-learning manager. She was speaking at the launch of the Youth Environment Programme (YEP) in Gansbaai, hosted by Gansbaai Primêr in Blompark on Thursday 19 March. The YEP takes schools’ environmental education to a new level and provides additional challenges to schools that have already excelled in the Eco-schools programme. In this programme, Whale Coast Conservation (WCC) provides extensive support to the school educators in planning and presenting environmental education topics that are part of the syllabus in all learning areas. Learners are also invited to attend educational expos and lessons at the Green House Environmental Awareness Centre. WCC continues to take its environmental expos to schools around the Overstrand, focusing in 2015 on the biodiversity of Catchment to Coast. Stripes, the eco-cat also shares his stories about the “eco-thing” with children. The Irvin&Johnson-AVI Community Trust has lent its support to YEP by sponsoring schools in Gansbaai to be the first recipients. Deidre du Toit, on behalf of the sponsors, expressed their commitment to help develop young people in the community to become environmentally aware and responsible citizens. WCC is thankful for the support received from the I&J-AVI Community Trust for rolling out the programme in the Gansbaai area.

One of the highlights of the event was the impromptu welcome performance by the Gansbaai Primêr Marimba Band – a credit to the school and the young musicians.

The launch was fittingly hosted by Tommy Volkwyn, principal of a beneficiary school, Gansbaai Primêr. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

The launch was attended by Deidre du Toit and Steyn Miller (centre back) from I&J, and principals and other staff of Gansbaai Primêr, Gansbaai Primary School, Academia Secondary and WCC. Councillor Riana de Coning was also there to lend support to the programme. Some of the beneficiaries, the school learners, also attended.

Overberg HR Forum established for HR practitioners The Overberg HR Forum had their first meeting at SANSA Space Science on 19 March. The group was initiated in an effort to share best practice guidelines and knowledge of the human resource sector with its members. “Not being close to the CBD of Cape Town, one tends to feel slightly isolated, especially when working in a small department. This forum aims to create a community for HR professionals in the Overberg,” said Anita Engelbrecht, HR manager at SANSA Space Science. The forum will act as a support group for HR professionals in the Overberg to assist one another with policies, procedures and other documentation important to the HR function. Some of the future plans include inviting experts to host talks on HR-related topics. “We would like to encourage anybody working in HR who is interested in joining the forum to please get in touch with us,” said Engelbrecht. You can send your contact details to aengelbrecht@sansa.org.za to be included in the Overberg HR Forum mailing list. Meetings will take place every second month on a rotational basis.

Growing carrots and the community KERRY VAN RENSBURG A special fundraiser luncheon for 100 guests was held at the Hermanus Hebrew Congregation on Tuesday 17 March. The event was organised by five women from the Women’s Guild of the Hermanus Hebrew Congregation. Heather Kaplan, a member of the guild, says: “We are endeavouring to look after a young girl in unfortunate circumstances.” Not only have they joined hands with Helpende Hand, a community organisation which helps people in need, but in this particular instance, they have taken over the project, which aims to assist this young person with her education. The guests who attended the function were treated to a delicious lunch, and those lucky enough to be sitting on winning numbered chairs, received prizes. The theme of the event was Growing Carrots and the Community, and the guest speaker was Sheryl Ozinsky, one of the founding volunteers and coordinator of the Oranjezicht City Farm project. SUE MCNAUGHT LEGACY LIVES ON: Justin Inch, a grade 12 learner at Hermanus High, was awarded a bursary on Saturday that will cover his school fees for the whole year. The bursary was bequeathed by the estate of well-known book lover and previous owner of The Book Cottage, Sue McNaught, who died of cancer in 2010. Since then the bursary is awarded every year to a worthy candidate as a contribution to the development of children in Hermanus. The school principal Greg Hassenkamp (left) attended the hand-over done by Tessa and Ben de Kock.

Energetic fun at the pedal go kart track JANINE VD RIETNEETHLING The new track for pedal gokarts was officially opened on Saturday. It is situated next to the cricket grounds, opposite Hermanus High School. Raymond de Wet, owner of Fun Go Karts, was happy with the number of people who put the track to the test, “despite windy conditions, and many school and sports events that also took place on Saturday.” While the Hermanus Times was there, the kids all had a good time racing against each

other. One of the go-karters, Adam Lawson Smith, proved his talent as he won almost every race. The track is not for kids only, as adults weighing up to 130 kg are also welcome. The track is currently open on Saturdays, but will be open daily during the school holidays. Fun Go Karts can also be booked for private functions, team building, fund-raisers or parties at a venue of your choice. For more information, contact Raymond on 072 805 0867/082 356 5460, visit their Facebook page, or email fungocart@gmail.com.

Riool in see skrik bus vol mense af JANINE VD RIETNEETHLING

(a) the probity or suitability for licensing of any of the persons to be involved in the operation of the relevant business, or (b) the suitability of the proposed site for the conduct of gambling operations If a public hearing is scheduled, the date of such hearing will be advertised in this publication approximately 14 days prior to the date thereof. Objections or comments must be forwarded to the Chief Executive Officer,Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, P.O. BOOKWORMS: During the month of February, Bargain Books Hermanus held a book drive to collect children’s books for a local crèche. They selected Vrolike Vinkies in Mount Pleasant. On 14 February International Book Giving Day is celebrated internationally. The initiative aims to provide children access to books and thereby create a love of reading in them. The initiative also encourages people to donate books to libraries, schools or individual children. They suggest leaving children’s book on planes, on the bus, in doctors or hospital waiting rooms and so forth. Bargain Books Hermanus asked customers to buy a children’s book to be donated and for every 10 books donated, the company donated one book. Ronel Tutt, manager of Bargain Books Hermanus, with staff and children from Vrolike Vinkies at the recent handover, says they collected 47 books for the crèche.

“It appears that Art in the Park is coming on board at just the right time. Everyone thinks it’s a great idea and that Hermanus is the right place to have it.” This is according to Gilly Shreeve, organiser of the new art market initiative, due to start on Sunday 29 March at the Hermanus Country Market site at the cricket ground. She says more than 30 artists are interested in taking part, as well as several “foodies” who will provide everyone with food and refreshments. “What better way of spending a Sunday? With the play area for the kids you know your children are safe while strolling around admiring paintings, pottery and sculptures.” Open from 10:00 to 14:00, it will offer a lovely quiet and peaceful Sunday after church, as well as the opportunity to enjoy lunch at comfortable outdoor benches. Gilly says they are hoping there will also be live music to add to the ambience. “Art groups all around the Overstrand have been contacted and we are delighted that we are getting a good representation from all sides.” The aim is to offer a monthly event every last Sunday of the month. For more information, call Gilly Shreeve: 082 878 9558 or 2 gillyshreeve@netactive. co.za.

DOGS: swallows dominate both ends The DOGS hosted an Individual Stableford (Log) / 4BBB on 24 March in Kleinmond. The equinox has come and gone and so, as is customary at this time of year, the swallows are choosing to congest the airways rather than the fairways. It is perhaps fitting then that swallows dominated both ends of the leaderboard in a decimated field. At the top, The Smooth Swinger wriggled his way to a massive 44 points, comfortably beating Mr. Hacker, a fellow swallow, into second place. Both have several weeks to go before heading north and so the pecking order still has time to change. At the other end, Hanging Judge Robinson had to swallow his pride just a few days before taking off. Stableford: 44 Tony Wreglesworth; 38 Tony Hackett; 37 Art Rae; 36 Jon Forsyth; 35 Koos Roelofse, Chris Martin, Dave Rade; 34 John Cheesbrough, Alan Smith; 33 André Franken; 31 Gordon Wilson; 30 Ian Newman, David Naylor, Geoff Crowther; 29 Richard Ridge, Deon Pheiffer, Trevor Vaughan, Gary Wentzel; 27 Fred Garrett; 26 Ronald Ridge (guest), Dave Smith; 24 Dave Robinson 4BBB: 48 Tony Wreglesworth / Trevor Vaughan www.dogsgolf.jimdo.com. – DAVE SMITH

FOTO: VERSKAF

Golf roundup with Julian Shaw TUESDAY LADIES We at the Hermanus Golf Club had a super week again. Starting with the ladies, last Tuesday 24 ladies enjoyed a 3 ball alliance. Coming out on top were Isolde Striene, Rusty Demmer and Moira Stadler with 69 points. WEDNESDAY MEN’S A good field of 124 players competed in an alliance bogey plus. The winners on the East course with a super +18 were Hamish Hofmeyr, John Makinson, Jan Cloete and David Romburgh, well done to the youngsters. Taking the honours on the North course on +15 were Kristian Borglin, Brian Taylor, Dave Marteze and their ghost Hennie Theron. Then lastly the victors on the South course were André Gouws, John Clifford, Daniel van

Fagen Rose (rugby boys u. 11) side-stepping one of his opponents.

der Merwe and Marius Krause with a massive + 25. There were 6 two clubs and the ball pool paid to +15. SATURDAY Saturday’s competition was a betterball stableford which saw 146 players competing. Thank you to my partner vice-captain Joe Lyon, even a two day camel ride of a putt by Danie van der Spuy on the last couldn’t entirely free them of the choke hold of defeat. Great game. Taking the honours though on the East course with 48 points again were John Clifford and Marius Krause (that new driver has really made a difference Marius). Winning the North course also on an impressive 48 points were the duo of Kristian Borglin and Peter Richardson. Then top of the pile on the South course were the old campaigners of Rob George and Peter Cawdry with 45 points. HOSPICE DAY Well done to all involved in the Hospice Golf Day which was played last week. It was a mixed four-ball alliance competition won by Ian and Louise McIntosh with Toby and Penny Gawith. Until next week, keep calm and go golfing.

Hoewel hy ‘n permanente werknemer by Just Decks is, is hy steeds geregistreer, en joggie hy nog by die Klub wanneer die geleentheid hom voordoen.

“Dié uitnodiging is hierdie jaar herhaal.

JANHENDRIK COETZER

“Ek dink ’n ou moet my eers oor so twee maande vra of ek weer sal deelneem, want as jy my nou moet vra, gaan my antwoord nee wees.
