The accident scene on Saturday evening on the R43 between Hermanus and Kleinmond near Benguela Cove. PHOTO: FACEBOOK JANINE VD RIETNEETHLING An accident on Saturday evening claimed the lives of two people, while another three people were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The accident happened on the R43 between Hermanus and Kleinmond near Benguela Cove at around 22:00. The road was closed to traffic for three hours while EMR, Metro and Overstrand Fire and Rescue attented to the scene, the injured people and the deceased. Bystanders described the accident scene as horrific and said paramedics and rescue personnel were very busy on the scene. Constable Mbongeni Mazuthu from the Hermanus Police, confirmed four vehicles were involved in the accident.

“The driver of the tow truck of Hermanus Towing was travelling from Kleinmond to Hermanus while towing a white car. “Although the case is still being investigated, it could be that he lost control of his tow truck when the chain broke off from the towed vehicle. The vehicle could have moved to the wrong lane of the road and collided head-on with the Mazda Sedan carrying five occupants. “A black bakkie was also involved in the collision.” According to Marius Minnaar, owner of Hermanus Towing, their tow trucks have two chains connected to a towed vehicle. “If the one chain breaks, it will not cause the car to swerve to the other side of the road. It will just cause the car to be lower to the ground.” Gawie Janse van Vuuren, the driver of the tow truck, says he heard a

big bang in the back of the car he was towing. The next moment he woke up next to the road in the bushes.” But, says Janse van Vuuren, if the white car he was towing veered off into the oncoming lane, crashing into the blue Mazda, the white car would have had blue paint on its body. “The same with my yellow tow truck, no blue paint is seen on the tow truck.” Mazuthu says two men in the Mazda died on the scene and the three other occupants, who were seriously injured, were taken to Hermanus Provincial Hospital. The driver of the tow truck was also taken to hospital due to injuries sustained.” The two men who died are from Zwelihle. They were apparently on their way to Caledon when the accident occured. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated. Continued on pg 5.

New cameras on N2 to measure average speed over distance Slowing down when you spot the new speed cameras will not be sufficient to avoid a speeding fine. The new average speed over distance (ASOD) cameras on sections of the N2, on Sir Lowry’s Pass and near Steenbras dam, measure the average speed you travel over a certain distance. According to the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Donald Grant, this is the sixth phase of expansion of the system which now covers 28,8 km of the N2, following previous activations along the R61, the R27, and most of the N1. “We hope that this further extension of the system will result in a continued decrease in both road fatalities, as well as speed violations on the province’s most dangerous roads.” How it works:

Laingsburg covering 190,6 km. 5. December 2014: N1 Laingsburg to Touws River covering 72,1 km. This sixth phase of the ASOD system brings the coverage by the system of the province’s most dangerous roads to 452 kilometres. The latest two sections covered, including Sir Lowry’s Pass, are: ) Section 1: Somerset West (Elandskloof point) to Steenbras. ) Section 2: Steenbras to Houwhoek. Grant says these specific areas have seen a number of accidents and fatalities in recent years. “We remain confident that with the ASOD system in place, more and more people will slow down on these stretches, thereby substantially reducing their likelihood of being involved in the horrific crashes that we have seen in the past, particularly along the longer distance roads.”

) The average speed over distance (ASOD) system calculates the average speed of a vehicle from the time it passes the first camera until it passes the second camera. ) The average speed is then determined by the time that it has taken a vehicle to travel from point A (where the first camera is located) to point B (where the second camera is located). ) Reaching point B in a time shorter than the time which is determined by the distance and the speed limit, means that the driver was speeding. Stolen cellphone found, two arrested Two suspects were arrested after a stolen cellphone had been recovered by Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) on Wednesday 1 April in the CBD area. A member of the public informed HPP officers that the cellphone had been stolen after which a detailed description of the suspects was given. When the officers got to the corner of Stemmet Street and Main Road, they spotted two people that matched the description that was given through. A cellphone was found in the possession of one of the suspects. It was later also established that both suspects had been in Hermanus Court earlier that day on other charges and their case had been postponed.

A business owner was caught off-guard when an alleged reputed scam artist not only bought equipment from his shop with a fake internet payment, but also, according to his employee, “stole” a draft of intellectual property from the employee, “worth millions”. This draft concerns a new system that is being developed for the justice system. Quintin Richards, working for Dirk Combrink, owner of Mr Ink in Long Street, Hermanus, says this man introduces himself as Bernardt von Luberman, but his real name could be Barry Heunis. After Richards did his own investigating, he found that Von Luberman, aka Heunis, has a criminal record and said that the Plettenberg Bay Police are looking for this man in connection with property fraud. Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) shared a photo of Heunis on Facebook, asking everyone’s assistance: “Please be on the lookout for this man. Has various aliases also known as Bernardt von Luberman / Du Bois. He is a con artist wanted all over South Africa.” Richards says this man visited Mr Ink on Friday 13 March and introduced himself as Advocate Bernardt von Luberman. “He told me he belongs to an advocate chamber organisation in Hermanus and he wanted to buy a printer, so I suggested a Brother 4-in-one. “He said that he will return the next day after he received the payment approval from the other authorised signatories. “The man mentioned that he defends inmates and we started talking about my project that I am currently developing for the Department of Correctional Services. “He showed great interest in it and

I replied yes and he asked me to tell him more about my project after reading and signing the NDA.” The man returned to Mr Ink the next day, made an internet payment for the printer in the shop and mailed Richards proof of payment. “He then said he arranged a meeting with the other advocates who would be interested in funding my project for the department. “After he cancelled the first meeting, he set up two more meetings, but every time it was cancelled. Richards said after he talked with Investec, they confirmed that the account from which the apparent EFT was made, does not exist, nor does that company. Richards has reported the incident to the Hermanus Police. According to constable Mbongeni Mazuthu, a case of fraud is being investigated and the suspect is still at large.

Ruth Lemonsky (middle) on a walkabout at Lemm’s Corner with Elizabeth du Toit to her left, Ward Councillor Kari Brice and members of the Hermanus History Society. Jeanette du Toit from JayDees captured the visit on video.

Lemm’s Stores used to be part house, part general dealer store and stood on what is known as Lemm’s Corner. The building was demol ished in the 80s.

Lemm’s Corner – a dream in the making CILENE BEKKER The daughter of Bernard Lemonsky - after whom Lemm’s Corner is named, visited Hermanus over the Easter weekend for the first time in 15 years. She lives in Scotland. This visit is fortuitous, seeing the attention focused on the revamp of Lemm’s, and could not have happened at a better time, according to the Hermanus History Society and Beth Hunt fromHemingways, whohaslongadvocatedthat something “be done” about the corner. The home of Bernard, his wife Elisabeth and daughter Ruth, was on Lemm’s Corner. It was partly a house and partly a general dealer called Lemm’s Stores. Ruth was five years old when the family moved to Hermanus in 1960. She attended primary school here. “It was a stone building then, with outside toilets,” recalls Ruth. Along with this recollection comes many others of living on Lemm’s Corner in Hermanus with a then population of around 4 000, “which would swell to 30 000 over Easter weekend”.

“I remember one rainy day when I was bored, and sat looking out the window and how excited I was at the sight of a total of two cars in one hour coming around the corner!” “I remember the shop well. It was an old-fashioned drapery selling material, hats, ladies clothes, menswear and household items. “I remember the fig trees on the property that stretched to where the old library was, bushes of Christmas roses in the garden, the lawn, the vegetable patches.” Many of her recollections are of places no longer around, nor is her childhood home on Lemm’s corner, which was demolished in the 1980s. “I have avoided Hermanus. It was so sad not to say goodbye to the house. Now that I am older I see things differently and Hermanus is often in my thoughts and dreams. I am loving being back here.” Ruth says in one of her dreams she saw a development taking place on Lemm’s corner – that a decision had been made to rebuild the facade of the house, featuring lovely stalls. This is a coincidence of timing with the revamp plans currently under way. For this pur-

pose, a walkabout and meeting with Ruth, Elizabeth du Toit (manager of the Old Harbour museum) and members of the Hermanus History Society were scheduled on Monday morning. (The HHS has been asked by the Harbour Museum committee to put forward a proposal to include history in the developments). Ruth explained the lay of the land back then to the group and said she would like to see something of that history incorporated into the new plans. “It would, for instance, be lovely to have a bench here dedicated to the memory of my parents, Bernard and Elisabeth Lemonsky. Perhaps even a board depicting what it looked like before.” Ruth has undertaken to provide drawings and photos of the lay-out of her childhood home and garden. During the walkabout, Du Toit mentioned that investors may be interested in constructing a replica of the building. In which way, shape or form needs to be discussed and investigated, as the first trees will soon be planted on Lemm’s Corner.

So how did it come about that Ruth Lemonsky (left) decided to come and visit Hermanus, aft er a gap of 15 years, and walk down memory lane on the very spot where her childhood home used to be on Lemm’s Corner? Beth Hunt’s book on Hermanus was the catalyst. Ruth had bought the book via kalahari.net and was so moved by the inserts on Lemm’s Corner, that she hunted Beth (right) down via facebook. “I was busy writing an article on Lemm’s for the Izibusiso cookery book when I received Ruth’s first message. It was such a strange coinci dence!” says Beth. They met up on Saturday morning at Hemingways. ) For more information on the history of Lemm’s Store and the Lemonsky family, get a copy of the late SJ du Toit’s Hermanus Stories III. Bernard Lemonsky (Ruth’s father) died in 2006, six years after his wife, Elisabeth.

switched off at the Vincent Pallotti Hospital the following day. The court case against the driver of the car, Schalk Lubbe, is still ongoing at the Strand Regional Court. He has been charged with culpable homicide. Lubbe first appeared in court on 20 February 2013. “It is draining to say the least. We have no closure and our lives have changed forever after the accident. We will never get our loving son back,” said Steven and Sue, who were very emotional when they spoke about the incident. The case against Lubbe is postponed until 17 June.

DAYNE NEL A dear friend and loving husband, Warwick Bursey was found dead in the early hours of Wednesday morning near the Kleinmond Rest in peace: Warwick turn-off on a Bursey farm road after he had been reported missing on Monday afternoon. No foul play is suspected. He was a well-known Bot River resident and also worked as presenter for Whale Coast 96FM. Colleagues remember him when, a little more than a year ago, “a tall man with the biggest smile walked into the Whale Coast offices”. He quickly became not only a valued volunteer, but also a dear friend of everyone at the station. He had a great sense of humour, but a strong sense of kindness and humanity. Tributes from friends: “Warwick – neon green buzzing, effervescent presence on the palette of colours that paraded on our Whale Coast FM canvas! His professional attitude to his sound work in advertisements and in his beloved programme will be sorely missed” – Adrian Louw “Warwick, so long boykie! We shall surely miss you blasting the past with your Rock ’n Roll style. Your reflection on the good ole times brought smiles and frowns many a time. Keep playing your music. Rest in Peace.” – Pieter van Aswegen “With fond memories, Warrick, I accept that life has once again left us without a very dear friend and colleague. Rest in Peace.” – Mari Geyer Heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Jo, and his two sons Brian and Rick.

Navy warship excercise: Local skipper shot at while fishing JANINE VD RIETNEETH LING Imagine going about your routine fishing business at sea and suddenly huge canons are being fired at you in pitch darkness. You realise a Navy warship could be mistaking your boat for a remotecontrolled vessel that has to be blown up as part of a training exercise! This is what happened to local skipper, Anthony Day, and his ten crew members on Wednesday 25 March near Struisbaai. “Myearswereringing,Ifelt dizzy, petrified and my crew members fell to the floor, keeping themselves flat when the three shots were fired.” Day and his crew launched his boat, Arctic, from Struisbaai harbour around 02:30, heading to fish for geelbek. At the harbour he had spoken to people from a charter company on the slipway who had a radio-controlled vessel of about 14 foot, which he was told was part of a joint naval exercise between the SA Navy and the German Navy. But, says Day, there were no warnings prior to the shots being fired, and he was not in the designated area where they were to practise. Plus, the exercise was to take place between 06:00 and 18:00 that evening – not after 02:30 in the morning. The remote-controlled vessel was launched but did not leave the harbour. Day understood the vessel was heading to the area offshore of the Denel missile testing range at De Hoop. Day says he then launched Arctic and motored in the opposite direction away from the Denel testing station – almost 30 miles further. At sea he saw a ship approaching slowly. “Suddenly, three shots were fired. I was moving at a

speed of 17 or 18 knots per hour. If I did not pull back on the throttle immediately like I did, I would have been straight in the line of fire.” He immediately switched on the LED lights on the boat. Healreadyhadhisnavigation and anchor lights on. “As I switched on the LEDs, they switched off their lights! This was very scary as I realised this could be part of their training, thinking we are the radio-controlled vessel, and that they could go into combat mode, re-aiming to practise corrective aiming.” He radioed channel 16 and explained they were a fishing boat, but got no reply. Hethen radioed CapeTown Radio and told them what had happened. Day says Cape Town Radio made contact with the ship and minutes later told him, the commander says they will no longer be firing at them, as it was done in error. At the time of going to print, the SA Navy had not responded to questions asked by the Hermanus Times regarding the incident. Day says he is just thankful that he and his crew are alive! His wife Tracy and three children know the work he does has a dangerous element, but nothing could prepare them for the shocking news of Day and his crew being shot at by a warship. Day and his crew are still in shock and traumatised. They received counselling after the incident. Day says no-one from the Navy has contacted him – not to apologise, nor to request an incident report. “They probably hope the incident will disappear, just as we almost disappeared after they shot at us.” Although the incident is over, they still feel on edge every time they go out to sea. Day is seeking legal advice on the matter.

The scene at the new harbour after a man drowned while training for his commercial diver’s certificate.

Young diver drowns while training for commercial certificate JANINE VD RIETNEETHLING In what is described as a freak, unfortunate accident, a 27-year-old man drowned on Monday morning while training with BS Divers Commercial Diving School at the new harbour. The deceased, whose name cannot be published until his family members have been notified, was a very experienced diver and a supervisor diver in the SA navy. He came to Hermanus a week ago to train for his commercial diver’s licence. Other diving instructors and diving trainees were on the scene while paramedics from Metro and EMR Ambulance Services tried for more than an hour to bring him back to life with ad-

vance life support resuscitation, but to no avail. He was declared dead on the scene. Boet Scheun, owner of BS Divers, said the divers did a free dive in the harbour as part of their training. The deceased was under water with two other divers when he apparently got stuck in the ropes. While trying to get his weights around his waist off him, he got entangled further. One of the other divers looked down and saw his partner stuck below. He went down and cut him loose. “I then took him up. He was still breathing, but not conscious. We loaded him onto a small boat and took him to the slipway at the harbour where staff began to give him oxygen until paramedics arrived,” the diver said. It is the first time a drowning has

occurred since the opening of BS Divers more than 18 years ago. Scheun says everyone is devastated. “A trauma councillor was sent by the Hermanus SAPS to come and talk to us. It is still a big shock to us all.” ) In another incident on Tuesday afternoon, a 40-year-old farmer from Worcester drowned after he took his farm workers on an outing at Palmiet, Kleinmond. It is alleged that the man went for a swim, but never returned. When the farm workers looked for him, they found him in the water, presumably already dead. They took him to a clinic nearby, but it was too late. They then took him to the Kleinmond Police Station. According to EMR Ambulance Service, they declared the man dead at the station.

Catch up with the Waddlers as they pass through your area.

Win two tickets to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town The fifth annual Penguin Promises Waddle for a Week will be taking place from 13 to 18 April. The group of Waddlers will be setting off from Gansbaai on 13 April and will stop over in Stanford. On 14 April they will be heading for Hermanus and on 15 April they will reach Kleinmond. The end point is Simon’s Town, which they will reach on 18 April. The waddlers hope to raise awareness about the plight of the endangered African penguin. The group of 16, tackling the 120 km walk, consists of animal keepers from around the country as well as other penguin enthusiasts and environmental supporters. The endangered African penguin is only found along the Southern African coastline. They occur nowhere else in the world. Their distribution stretches from Namibia in the west, to Algoa Bay in the east. These birds face extinction in the wild as their numbers continue to decline dramatically. Loss of food sources due to overfishing, climate change and habitat destruction are just some of the factors taking their toll. How can South Africans help the African penguin and the Waddlers? It is quite easy to become involved. By simply making a promise to make a change in their daily lives, South Africans can positively effect change in the environment. These promises are funnelled through the Penguin Promises campaign and need to be submitted to ipromise@penguinpromises.com. Promises should be kept simple and doable. So, why not make an environmental promise to stop using plastic bags and straws?

Or how about swapping your water guzzling bath for a quick shower? Other promises include eating only sustainable sources of seafood, planting indigenous plants in your garden, adhering to the water by-laws and teaching others about the Penguin Promises campaign and the plight of the African penguin. These changes can have an immense positiveimpactontheenvironmentwhentheyare made collectively. The Waddle for a Week and the Penguin Promises campaign are not fund raisers, instead they aim to facilitate longterm behaviour change. On the final day of the Waddle, Saturday 18 April, the group will depart from Muizenberg and will walk to Simon’s Town. On this leg, they would love to see as many Capetonians and visitors as possible joining them. Dress in black and white and show your love and support of the African penguin – they leave Muizenberg (Surfer’s Corner) at 09:00 and will reach Simon’s Town at approximately 13:00. For further information about the Penguin Promises Waddle for a Week, visit www.penguinpromises.com or email Hayley McLellan on hayley.mclellan@aquarium.co.za. ) Win two tickets to the Two Oceans Aquarium by answering this easy question: Are African penguins endangered? SMS the keyword: WIN, followed by your answer, yes or no,andyournameandcontactdetailsto34429. The competition runs from Thursday 9 April until Monday 13 April. The competition is not open to aquarium staff, volunteers and their families. Tickets are valid for three months after issue. SMSes cost R1,50.

New chef and owner at EAT JANHENDRIK COETZER Now that EAT restaurant has a new owner and chef, what has Petri Hendrickz (previous chef/owner) up his sleeve now, wonders HT readers. He is quite mum about his future plans, but says after more than four years after starting EAT it was time for him to sell. “Every day was becoming the same routine. It wasn’t really a challenge anymore. When I opened up ‘At The Village Stall’ next door, that was a new challenge for me. But watch this space, I’m busy opening up a new restaurant in Hermanus and will be in business soon,” says Petri. For new EAT owner Sheena Pruce, being thrown into the deep was the quickest and best way to learn. She took over at the start of the busy season towards the end of last year. “I am enjoying every moment and have learned a lot over the past five months. Fortunately Petri helped out a lot and still pops in from time to time. It’s hard work, but I am enjoying the new challenge.” Sheena has an investment background and it is her first time running a restaurant. The new head chef is Connel Massym, who has trained as a chef at Warwick Chef School. He first worked at a few other restaurants, including restaurants in England, before joining EAT. Although they have not changed much to the menu, “it’s a winning recipe, why change it?”, they had to invest in a bigger and stronger generator, and can cope with everything, “except for the pizzas”.

NATURE MATTERS: Did you know ...South Africa occupies only 0.8% of the world’s land area yet boasts nearly 3% of the world’s plants and approximately 7% of its reptiles, birds and mammals. This makes South Africa the third most biodi verse country in the world (following Indonesia and Brazil). Citizen scien tists play a vital role in helping to keep track of where these species are found and how many there are. Whale Coast Conservation has start ed a citizen science project to moni tor the occurrence of the Cape Dwarf Chameleon. Overstrand among the first to formalise car guards JANHENDRIK COETZER Recognition was given to the Overstrand’s parking marshals and formalised car guards on Tuesday 1 April at the municipal auditorium. A group of marshals who have proven themselves, received certificates in recognition of their service to the municipality. A group of car guards also recieved brandnew, distinguishing jackets, caps and boots. This event was hosted jointly by Overstrand Municipality, the Department of Community Safety and AfriForum. As part of this programme, initiated by AfriForum to formalise the employment of car guards, which

includes car washers, the team underwent extensive training, including a course in first aid, which will assist them in dealing with unforeseen emergencies. Nomafu Mphothulo Ximiya from the Department of Community Safety congratulated the Overstrand for being the first to formalise car guards. “This initiative will definitely be rolled out to other local authorities and provincial governments. I was so impressed with AfriForum by handing out the jackets that we decided to sponsor the boots which will complement the jackets.” Overstrand Municipality’s director of Protection Services, Neville Michaels also saluted the team on their achievement. “These members really made

New cell opened at Karwyderskraal landfill site A new cell at Karwyderskraal was officially launched on Thursday 2 April by Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie. The entire project was implemented to provide an operational regional landfill for the Overstrand and Theewaterskloof Municipalities. This only materialised after three years of communication with all relevant parties, and according to Botha-Guthrie this is a good example of cooperation between neighbouring municipalities to achieve a common goal. The advantages of the re-opening of Karwyderskraal will be that more than one town, and even more than one municipality can again benefit from this landfill site. The refuse of Hermanus and Kleinmond does not have to be transported to the Gansbaai landfill site anymore, which means the expected lifespan of the Gansbaai landfill site will be extended as a result of this project. The project, which cost R9,3 million, was funded by the municipality out of funds received as a municipal infrastructure grant from the Department of Local Government. Botha-Guthrie also thanked the main contractor, Burger & Wallace, for their “cooperation and outstanding workmanship throughout the entire project”. She said: “One operater and eight labourers from our local labour force were employed during the course of completing the project. “All work was completed well within the time frame and to a high standard. I am sure this cell will only benefit both the Overstrand and Theewaterskloof Municipalities.”

In the middle row (from left) are Solomzi Madikane (director, Economic Development and Tourism), Ingrid Mo dirwa (parking administrative assistant) and Nicolette BothaGuthrie (mayor) together with the parking mar shals who received certificates in recognition of their training, experience and specific achievements. something out of nothing and I am so very proud of them. One tourist creates about seven jobs, and a warden’s /marshal’s duty is to assist the public, be an asset to Hermanus Tourism and to make the Overstrand proud.”

Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie urged the team to do their jobs with pride and dignity at all times. “It does not matter what your job description is, what your salary is or where you live. Everyone is equal and has the right to a job.

With self-respect, honesty and dedication, anything will be possible. By being helpful and friendly, you will do your bit to make Hermanus the place to be. So go out there – the motorists and the public need you.”

ELEPHANTS ROCK!: While walking along the coastal path in On rus, just past the parking area near Milkwood restau rant, Jane Damant spotted these two ‘baby elephant rocks’ exposed during low tide.

EDITORIAL COMMENT Passiespel to go bilingual With a tragic car accident taking two lives, and two drownings over the Easter week end, there was also some positive news with the annual Passiespel again being a huge success. Weather wise, everything went accord ing to plan, with the sound and lighting also getting bigger and better each year. It was also confirmed that this event will be bilingual as of next year for the first time in 20 years. This of course, may be rather good news as many people attend ing each year are English speaking. With a film crew recording the event this year to be broadcast as a documentary later, it will most certainly also reach a broader audience and keep growing as a gottosee event in Hermanus over Easter. Perfect example: An Italian guy, who cannot speak a word of Afrikaans, has been doing the sound for the play for the past four years. When he approached the organiser back then, offering his services, his words were: “It is my first time here and although I cannot understand a word, I felt so emo tional and passionate that I just have to get involved with this production some how.” In whatever language, the production and message is passionately felt.

Illegal cycling in the HemelenAarde Valley There are tens of kilometres of carefully laid out and meticulously sign-boarded cycle paths in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. These paths are mainly on private land and cyclists may cycle at will where and when they wish on the cycle paths, providing they display a permit obtained from Euodia Cycles at the Hemel en Aarde Village. The majority of cyclists dutifully display their permits and ride on the designated paths. Some individuals, however, defiantly ride with no permit. Some cyclists too, ride on private land (including the Fernkloof Nature Reserve) where there is no designated cycle path and

landowners are getting angry about this. This could result in closure of certain cycle paths to the public. What a loss for all the law-abiding people just wanting to enjoy a beautiful ride. On sending a photograph of a trespassing cyclist to Euodia cycles, the response of Mr Jan van Schalkwyk of Euodia cycles was, “cyclists like this are ruining it for everyone”. Illegal cyclists could not only face a charge of trespassing, but also face being banned from all future organised cycling events. Please cyclists, just adhere to the rules!

Sandbaai Neighbour hood Watch to the rescue On behalf of the Community Police Forum under which all Neighbourhood Watches fall, I would like to thank Col. Moody for publicly thanking the Sandbaai Neighbourhood Watch for its assistance to him. It is indeed a rare occurrence to be thanked, despite the fact that a small group of volunteers patrol the streets of Sandbaai, for the past eighteen years, nearly every night of the year. They are also on radio call out during the day and have an emergency number which is manned 24 hours a day, in contact by radio to all members for reaction. These few dedicated men and women keep Sandbaai citizens safe, expecting nothing in return. The effectiveness of the Sandbaai NHW is evidenced in the fact that Sandbaai has a lower incidence of house break-ins than a lot of their neighbouring suburbs, despite the vulnerability of its position. The NHW desperately need more people to help with patrols. If you want to volunteer your services, please phone either our emergency number 083 962 8462 or the Chairman Nico Hechter on 083 446 8765. He will be delighted to have you on board. An invitation was recently extended to the Sandbaai Ratepayers Association committee members to join the NHW.

D DICKENS COMMUNITY POLICE FORUM

This is what I, as a Scandinavian tourist, love about your lovely Hermanus

Tenders unfair to traders I have been shocked and dismayed at the ‘plotting’ behind closed doors to cancel the leases of all the market traders. Our country is in a sad, broken state, so why reduce a meaningful segment of the community doing honest and daily work in rain and fair weather for the enhancement of the whole community through tourism? Traders are in fixed structures on municipal land and thus the municipality are the managing agents of such structures built with the peoples’ money. The suggestion that a tender process must be applied to each individual trader for the right to trade in an over-priced 3x3 space makes no sense. Can one imagine every business having to follow such a tender process from their landlords upon renewal. Existing businesses must then make way for another business for no apparent reason other than someone else desires the space. What logic is this? One can never grow a business or sell it on. One is reminded of De Mond Caravan Park – which now stands neglected, while developers are being sought over two years on. Does the same fate await the Market Square?

FIGHTER FOR ECONOMIC FREEDOM

I am on my way home again. Or am I leaving home? The last years I have spent nearly the same time in Hermanus and South Africa as I have in Sweden. Many of my best friends are in SA and I feel I am doing more and better here than I do in Sweden. As a professional educationist, it is in my blood to do the best I can to make a difference to others. For the better of course, according to their wishes and desires. Nowadays I feel this to happen more here in SA than in Sweden. Maybe even more in Hermanus. People engaging in SparkleKids (www.sparklekids,co.za) and Get on with it, are some of those who show what is possible in their commitment to contribute to a more fair and sustainable society. Members of these groups and others, I am sure, do a lot through networking and other ways of challenging, sharing and caring. People like Francios Barnard, Fikiswa Gxamesi, Theo and Angie Krynauw, Mzikayise Damesi and William Ntebe, just to mention a few of them, are those who help to bring new value into many people’s lives. And to mine, just by letting me be a part of it. Through contributions to a better education and access to university and college, through skills training and job creation, through being friends and getting to know each other, through networking and creativity, through activity, doing things together, they make a difference that makes Hermanus a better place for all. I am proud to take some part in that. It brings value to my life. But to earn some money, I also do other things. In SA it is about tourism. I would say that in many ways I am also a tourist myself and I enjoy it! Hermanus is a great place to be in. It has a lot that brings great value to tourists. Of course I refer mostly to the Scandinavian tourists but I can not see that there should be any great difference between tourists from different countries, or from SA

I know that to a tourist, Hermanus is a wonderful place to visit for many reasons. I will mention some, in a casual order, and by doing so I hope I can make you Hermanites even more proud to live here. Nature, mountains, fynbos, ocean, whales: Of course, your whales, in their season, are a world-known attraction. But other marine life is there all the time. You are lucky with the sharks and everything else living in the ocean. To me and many others the view of it is good enough. The setting of Hermanus is stunning and we visitors love it. I know from my guests and tourists. Maybe fishing could be more available to all the tourists? If that could be done in a way that your guests can get in contact with locals, it is even better. Meeting locals is hard. Especially when you travel in groups. The job done in restaurants and bars is very important in this matter. As well as in how the township tours are conducted in a way that gives many meetings. One big travel company is now in the process of doing their township tours in Hermanus instead of in Cape Town. Just because it is better here. Quality of this kind is very important. It spreads into other parts of the tourist industry of Hermanus. This moving of the township tours to Zwelihle demands that this company stays with their groups for another day in Hermanus. One more night to spend, three more meals to eat, some more shops to find something nice in, some more art galleries to visit. Quality is also what you get going to the wine farms of Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and the whole of Walker Bay. The wine is excellent and the presentation in the most magnificent settings are better and more personal and relaxed, as it should be with wine, than in any other wine district. Last time I had a group here we, on the

same day, did both a township tour in Zwelihle and a wine tour in Hemel- en-Aarde. It works because of the similar high quality in the way it is presented. Hermanus is small and easy to find your way in and get to know. That contributes to a feeling of belonging that makes people willing to come back again and again. In this regard, the markets can be mentioned. In the market by the red sheds, the craft market by Fisherman’s Cottage as well as at the Saturday farmers market by the cricket club, tourists can find everything they wish for of “itemised memories”, as I prefer to call souvenirs, to bring back home. Compared to other markets in bigger places, you come to know the traders. I often chat a minute or two with mama Linda Chigama on the corner, Gizelle at the craft market or some of the other guys making a living on the market in that small town. It’s a laid back, easy way of creating contacts above the business that might be a part of it. The markets, in different ways, also show a bit of the cultural diversity that Hermanus can boast about. Cultural diversity is what is expected by tourists going to the modern democratic South Africa. This history is very important to Scandinavian tourists and they are happy to see evidence of this change. Hermanus can learn from Cape Town and Green Market square where different music and dance have become a part of the “show” making it attractive to tourists to be there, not only for shopping. This is some of what I think tourists, especially Scandinavians, like about your Hermanus. It is definitely what I like. Or Love. Yes, that is a better word. Thank you, Hermanus, dear friends and other Hermanites!

) The market is a happy friendly interesting tour

ist destination. Don’t mess with what works. – MOIRA WALKER ) Love the market in Hermanus. One of the rea sons we visit. Disturbed to read that those who have worked so hard over many years to build up viable stalls at market, which draw tourists, may forfeit all and loose livelihood due to new tender process. – MIKE WALKER ) How devastating for the market shops. One can only remember how they started the market in makeshift shelters, through rain and heat, only to now be told that contracts won’t be renewed. This is their livelihood. How are we supposed to attract entrepreneurs that are the breadwin ners. Not a good move. – HAZEL PEDERSEN ) Maybe a couple of market stalls are repetitive but main body works well and visitors love it. Rather give those stalls a chance to be more indi vidual than toss them off. – ANON ) Amazing that when the market stalls were first built how everyone wanted them pulled down. Now that they are a success everyone wants to move on in. – JOHN ) Hoekom is daar so baie naweekgemaksugti ge mense in Sandbaai? ) Yes please Curro, I moved to Vermont recently and hoped not to hear that bell again. Sound is driving me nuts! – JANE SUPPORTER ) It seems that most people were more con cerned about the electricity issues that were caused by the recent wild fires around the Her manus area without any concern for our brave and professional fire fighters that made it possi ble for Eskom to reconstruct the damaged power lines. The men and women of the Overstrand Protection Services fought day and night to save our way of life and should therefore be saluted by all. Well done you guys. Animals also have rights dear neighbour Whereas Hermanus generally qualifies as a reasonably animal-friendly town, there are unfortunately a number of fringe elements with a total disregard for animal rights. They are vehemently intolerant of any domestic animal that they perceive to ever so slightly invade their hallowed private space. Their wrath is primarily directed at dogs, which from time-to-time bark at other dogs accompanying their owners past what they perceive to be their territory. They are so obsessed with what they regard as their rights that even the slightest incident of barking cause them to react in a highly irrational manner. Despite being very vocal about their discontent, they generally do not confront the owners of animals that aggrieve them, choosing to rather vent their anger on third parties. Without making any attempt to approach the owners to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution, they immediately resort to petitioning punitive interventions by the local authority and law enforcement agencies in their effort to compel dog owners to change the behaviour of their domestic animals. By alleging that the domestic animals in question are causing an ‘unreasonable disturbance’, are held accountable by virtue of hand-delivered warnings of a spot fine being imposed or a summons served if the perceived disturbance continues. Interestingly, the by-laws do not define ‘unreasonable disturbance’ or provide objective standards according to which the barking, whimpering or howling of a dog is

11

to be adjudged an ‘unreasonable disturbance’. This aforesaid begs the question whether responsible dog owners should simply sit back and willingly accept being victimised by a small group of complainers? Has the time not come for a better balance to be sought between human and animal rights, and for by-laws taking cognizance of the fact that animals also have a right to life, to physical health, and to a degree of control over their environment and the company they keep? Sadly, a neighbour has for many months waged a standoff emotional war to make known his discontent at what he deems to be the ‘unreasonable disturbance’ caused by my two toy poodles – instead of walking across the street to discuss his discontent. No other resident in our proximity has ever even intimated that the poodles in constitute an ‘unreasonable disturbance’. The time has come for animal lovers to stand together against those who wish to see this beautiful town remodelled according to their selfish needs. For too long those with little regard for animal rights have ‘bullied’ animal owners, causing them to either sacrifice a very important part of their life, or to confine their animals to house arrest. Animal lovers should forthwith stand tall, and also ensure that the by-laws of our town are revised to take due account of the rights of animals.

PROF DAVID VENTER

Tender process for traders not a good call With regard to the municipal council not renewing the lease agreements to the existing stall owners has not met with a favourable light. These stalls are not only an attraction to overseas visitors but also to our local travellers as well. As a GM of a 5 star B&B our guests love the unique stalls with something for all walks of life. Besides the fact that they fought for many years for the new shops to be built (battling

in make shift tents, in all weather conditions) they are now told after five years the lease will not be renewed and are up for tender. You are looking at the livelihoods of all concerned. I actually think this is a shocker for existing dwellers. Why can’t new shops be built at Lem’s corner instead of throwing out the existing stalls. I really don’t think it’s a good call.

Businessman, pilot sadly missed Well-known Hermanus resident Lionel Gerald Harris, died suddenly at his home in Westcliff on 26 March at the age of 77. Lionel lived in Hermanus for the past 66 years. His wife Margaret says he loved the sea and was one of the original commercial perlemoen divers in the area. He was an engineer on local trawlers and was involved with starting one of the first factories in the new harbour, which milled seaweed for export. In 1974 Lionel learnt to fly and received his pilot’s licence. Margaret says: “He was a member of the Walker Bay Flying Club where he enjoyed many weekend fly-ins by other flying clubs. All of Hermanus enjoyed these functions at the local airfield, which was situated between the industrial area and what was then a smaller Zwelihle.” Lionel was the owner of some of the original industrial area properties where he had a business called Creative Metals and Gas – a light engineering works, which also supplied gas and paraffin to the local population. Together with Frank Raimondo, Lionel started Walker Bay Recycling, which is still a flourishing business and service to the community. At the age of 70, Lionel survived a major medical set-back and was forced to take things slowly. Margaret describes him as “a man who meant a lot to a lot of people, and will be sadly missed by them all, especially his loving family”. Lionel Harris is survived by his wife Margaret, five children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A service was held at the United Church on 31 March.

In the first two weeks, more than double the number of FynArts tickets have been sold compared to the corresponding period last year. For some events 30% of the available tickets have already been snapped up. “People are evidently taking advantage of the Early Bird ticket prices offered for many of the events. These will be available until 30 April. But we would also like to believe that the programme has a compelling mix of events,” says FynArts Director Mary Faure. The 2015 programme, that has grown from last year’s 80 events, to 120, offers a wide variety of music performances, talks, workshops, cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, food and wine pairings, films and exhibitions of sculptures, paintings and ceramics. In recognition of the diverse origin of immigrants to South Africa, this year and in the future, FynArts will reflect the “connection” of one country to the arts as well as to the South African way of life. This year it is Italy, with some events celebrating this connection such as the Idiom Festival of Italian Opera, presented by Prof Kamal Khan, director of the UCT Opera School, and UCT students on Friday 12 June, “A Feast for the Senses”, a gourmet dinner, curated by Garth Stroebel at Benguela Cove Manor House on Monday 8 June, a number of talks, including new insights into Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, a Grappa tasting with Giorgio Dalla Cia and a dish with an Italian connection on the menu of ten participating restaurants. This Italian thread also runs through the 11 films on the programme, such as Roman Holiday, Life is Beautiful, The Secret of Santa Vittoria and It Started in Naples. FynArts also caters for children, who should not miss the unique opportunity to meet Joey the War Horse. The world famous puppet will go walkabout in the streets of Hermanus on Sunday 7 June in Zwelihle, at Lemm’s Corner and the Amphitheatre. While War Horse Joey visits, puppeteer Adrian Kohler will talk about The Making of War Horse. Other talks during FynArts include: A Life in Books, a panel discussion with writer Christopher Hope, Michele Magwood (editor-at-large at the Sunday Times) and Duncan Minshull (senior producer at BBC Radio). FynArts tickets can be purchased via Webtickets and at Hermanus Tourism. Programme booklets are also available at the tourism office, art galleries and the library. Also visit www.hermanusfynarts.co.za for the full programme. For enquiries contact: Mary Faure at fynarts@hermanus.co.za or Media Editor: Colleen Naudé at colleen.naude@gmail.com. Hermanus FynArts runs from 5 - 16 June.

Inspired Life MINISTRIES

All Welcome

UNITED CHURCH HERMANUS

Pastor Andy Luke recently made a trip to Ireland, and learnt some crucial lessons for his personal life as well as for us as South Africans. He will be using slides and maps to help us understand Ireland as well as to show us what he learnt. Also, some fun – why he didn't kiss the Blarney stone, etc!

A JOURNEY WITH A MES SAGE: Claudie Lemoine pre sented a dramatisation of the story of Passover from the time when the Israelites left Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. The symbolism attached to each part of the journey and how this points to the significance of the four cups present at the Passover meal shared by Jesus and his disciples before his crucifixion, formed part of the teaching and presentation.

Worship dancers presented several items at the Passover event held at the Hermanus Ballroom Dancing Studio on Saturday morning.

Theewaterskloof stableford turned to be a onemanshow for the DOGS There are a couple of well-known “Forsyths” in this world. One in particular is talented, amusing, entertaining and a pretty good golfer. Despite lacking most of those attributes, another one still managed to

stage what was effectively a one-man show at Theewaterskloof on Tuesday. The Ex-Used-House-Salesman tried to put in a cameo appearance during the interval but nobody else came close.

Coldplay had to retire after straining his back practising an acrobatic act and there was a failed song-anddance routine from Huge and the Dachshund Whisperer, the former’s failure being more “Countdown”

than “Strictly”. Stableford: 39 Jon Forsyth; 36 Ian Newman; 35 Deon Pheiffer, Tony Wreglesworth; 34 Koos Roelofse; 33 Richard Ridge; 32 Dave Smith, John Cheesbrough; 31 Art Rae; 29 Doug

SKOPBOKS: HERMIE GAAN STAAL WYS IN VSA

Dis my eerste keer wat ek oorsee gaan en wil ek net my beste gee en my land se naam hoog hou.”

Ander borge sluit in Hi Q, Scorpion Intelligence, Hermanus Round Table, Hermanus Old Boys Club, Lenvelco, Maichael Nel en Jake White. Op die foto is Marian ne Rossouw (AfriForum), Zaanru Fraser, Rudi Fraser en Elmarie van Dalen (AfriForum). Die tjek is op Woensdag 1 April by Hoërskool Hermanus by die saalbyeenkoms aan haar oorhandig. FOTO: JANHENDRIK COETZER ter se prestasies was eintlik heel toevallig. “Destyds het ek haar bloot aangeraai om skopboks en karate te doen sodat sy haarself kan verdedig, en die volgende oomblik gaan sy sommer saam met die SA span Amerika toe. Dis amper nog nie heeltemal ’n werklikheid vir my nie. Sy het al so baie danse en partytjies gemis omdat sy haar sport ernstig opneem, so ek is seker sy sal baie goed doen. Zaanru werk regtig baie hard.”

Pa Rudi is net so trots. “Zaanru is die eerste een in die Fraser-familie wat Protea-kleure verwerf het, so dis ’n baie groot mylpaal vir haar en vir ons almal. “Sy is baie opgewonde, maar ter selfde tyd ook skrikkerig. Gelukkig is sy in goeie hande, want haar sensei, Ruehan van Romburgh, gaan ook saam. Die twee weke gaan lank wees en ons gaan verlang, maar ek is seker sy gaan ons baie trots maak.”

Thomas Browne finished under the top 200 athletes out of 16 000 runners in the Two Oceans Half Marathon (21km) on Saturday 4 April. He finished in a time of 1:26, which is the fastest local time, and received a silver medal. What makes this achievement even more special is that Thomas, a former Herma nus High School learner, was seriously injured in a shark attack almost two years ago. Thomas is currently studying geomatics at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
