SUPPORT OF THE ARTS: MILESTONE

Hermanus FynArts Fund launched Hermanus FynArts, to be held from 5 to 16 June, has reached a new milestone – their newly established Hermanus FynArts Fund has received its first two contributions. Hermanus Property Management Pty Ltd, represented by Alex van der Sluys, is the first corporate to have pledged its support, and Harvey Tyson the first contributor in a personal capacity. “I was not keen to agree to broadcast my contribution, but was persuaded that it might encourage other people from the Overstrand to contribute to the Hermanus FynArts Fund,” says Tyson, a former editor of

The Star. “Hermanus FynArts has been growing in stature and will most certainly continue not only to establish Hermanus as a centre celebrating South African art, but also as a vehicle to involve the whole community.” “FynArtscanstimulateandbenefit our unique and growing community, provided there is support from all of us – English, Afrikaans and Xhosa – and provided those of us who can afford to enjoy the festival events help some of those less fortunate to take part.” The long-term aim of Hermanus FynArts is to establish a School of the Arts for the Overstrand in Hermanus. In the shorter term, the aim is

to increase audiences at concerts and at workshops to include people who for socio-economic reasons are not able to take part in the festival. “We are deeply grateful to the benefactors who have to date assisted in making this possible. But the festival, now in its third year, still has no major financial backing,” says Festival Director Mary Faure. “We have therefore launched a benevolent fund with its own bank account. On top of contributions received, any surplus in the FynArts account at the end of the 2015 festival will be paid into the benevolent fund in order to promote the relevance and scope of arts education via Hermanus FynArts.

Teen 20:00 was sy

It can’t remain the same. The rights of those people with fishing rights at the moment have been extended to 2016 to give us time to create the correct structures,” Zokwana explained to the crowd. The minister then gave the fishermen the opportunity to pose questions and air their grievances and concerns, to be taken into consideration in the Small-Scale Fisheries policy. After his visit to Zwelihle, the minister went to Blompark, Gansbaai for a public meeting. Public consultations on the regulations relating to small-scale fisheries will take place during the week of 16 to 19 March and people living in fishing communities are encouraged to register their expression of interest to have their town or area declared a small-scale fishing community.

CPF chairperson, Willem Maclean, congratulating Re serve Constable Fernando Damon.

WHAT WAS THE CRANE LIFTING?: No, it’s not a safe being hoisted as some readers thought when they saw a huge crane lift ing and depositing a large container at the municipal building. This Liebherr 220 ton crane with a reach of 75 metres was used to remove an old roofmounted airconditioner from the municipal auditorium last Friday and to replace it with a new one. The old and damaged airconditioner was originally installed when the building was constructed about 12 years ago. According to Don Kearney, senior manager, administration at Overstrand Municipali ty, the old airconditioner had been repaired on a few occasions, but finally packed up late in 2013. “Without the airconditioner, the auditorium became uncomfortable during the summer months. As the roof of the auditorium is surrounded by huge trees and other buildings, a mobile crane with a long reach had to be hired. This magnificent crane is a rare sight in any town and drew many onlookers.” PHOTO: JANHENDRIK COETZER

CPF initiate awards for good police work The Stanford Community Police Forum (CPF) has initiated a project that aims to recognise and motivate efficient police work in the different teams, also called shifts, where much of the visible policing is co-ordinated.

Each member of a shift, who has performed consistently well over a period of three months, receives Pick n Pay vouchers, the first of which was sponsored by Stanford Village Properties. The award, in the form of a

plaque, is displayed at the police station. Captain JK Africa is sponsoring a floating trophy that is presented to the winning shift. So far, two awards have been made, the first for the third quarter of 2014 (July to September). This shift was led by Sergeant Lungiswa Ndzambo, the other members being Constable Hloniphile Sukwana, Constable Christiano Arizan, Constable Andiswa Dila and Reserve Constable Fernando Damon. This shift arrested a man

for housebreaking, within two hours after he had attempted to escape by swimming across the Klein River. The second award, for the fourth quarter (October to December 2014), went to the shift who made the most arrests, including 17 drugrelated crimes in the three-month period. The shift was led by Constable Anele Sigwili, with good support from Constable Ashley Prins, Constable Thamsanqa Cekiso and Constable Burnerd Arendse.

Paddle gokart track opening soon JANHENDRIK COETZER A track for paddle go-karts will be opening on Saturday 21 March in Hermanus. The track is situated across the way from Hermanus High School, and is right next to the Hermanus cricket grounds. According to the owner, Raymond de Wet, negotiations for the building of the track started quite some time ago, but the actual construction only started about a week ago. “There will be six big karts and two smaller ones. We will also have a gazebo put up with refreshments for sale and there will be lots of seating available. “This will be ideal for kiddies parties, but adults can have just as much fun. The go-kart track can even be used for school fundraisers. “Nowadays, kids spend most of their time in front of the comput-

er playing games, and this will give them the opportunity to take part in something physical and fun right here in Hermanus. We will even be giving away prizes for achievements like the best lap times.” According to Andrienette Fourie, chairperson of the Hermanus Sports Club, she is very positive about the track. “Before the building of the track started, I spoke to quite a few people to find out whether they would be interested in something like this. Almost all parents were extremely exited about the idea. “The track can also be used as a team building venue for adults or companies. Or otherwise it can simply be used as entertainment for the kids while the market is also open on a Saturday.” From 21 March the track will be open every Saturday, and then daily during the school holidays.

Albertine van der Linden (seated in front) celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday 7 March surrounded by her extended family. Her children are all still alive and well, and in clude (from left): Francis Tucker (crouching down), Sybil Perks (behind Tucker), Pam Duffy, Barbara MacKinnon, Erica Thomson, Milja Harper, Mayor Nicolette BothaGuthrie (guest) and Robert van der Linden, an orthopaedic surgeon who lives in Port Elizabeth.

For the first time in 22 years, Albertine van der Linden, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday 7 March, had all seven of her children together under one roof. This milestone birthday was celebrated by over 107 direct family members, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, at Barbara and Winston MacKinnon’s home in Fisherhaven. The party took place in a marquee in their garden, and the different family generations wore colour-coded name tags. Many family members came from the USA and Canada to share in the special occasion. Barbara, the middle daughter, gave a brief overview of her mom’s life: “Albertine was born in Holland on 7 March 1915. On her wedding day she and her husband Jan left Holland and came to South Africa. From the moment they stepped ashore in Cape Town they have loved their new country and she was an ardent ambassador for SA. She raised seven children – one son and six daughters. She has 36 grandchildren and 81 great-grandchildren. “All through her life she has championed education, the arts and excellence in all you do. She obtained a BSc degree in chemistry and taught maths at school and at home for about

50 years. She moved to Fisherhaven from Cape Town 12 years ago and taught privately, only retiring at 95.” Barbara jokes that her mom says she feels so healthy she’ll never go to the “other side”. She also followed the Fit for Life eating programme for 50 years. The Van der Linden family has been coming to Onrus for holidays for more than 50 years. At the party, speeches were made and glasses raised, but when the birthday queen addressed the family, few eyes were dry. Albertine told her family: “Thank you for coming all the way. It’s marvellous to see us all together. Onrust is a magical world, I am very sentimental about it. SA is the best country in the world. Those of you who raise children, it’s important to teach them to love their country.” WhentheHermanusTimesvisitedAlbertine a few days before her party, we asked her three questions, and her answers were sharp and to the point: Q: How do you feel health wise? A: 100% Q: How does it feel to have all your family together? A: Wonderful Q: What is your secret to long life? A: Peanut butter.

Josephine Geswind from Mount Pleasant brought all her copper coins to HAWS.

Copper coin collection well underway The Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS), in conjunction with the Hermanus Times, are calling on everybody in Hermanus to become “copper droppers” in aid of the welfare society. All you (as a retailer or business) need to do is apply for a collection bin to be placed at your business. You, together with colleagues and clients, can bring all your copper coins lying around in the house, to your place of business and drop it in the collection bin. Every month, HAWS will collect the copper coins and a report will be published in the Hermanus Times as to what businesses/retailers are in the lead with the most coins collected. This initiative will run for six months, and HAWS hopes to collect around R54 000. Retailers already participating in the different categories are as follows: Motor industry category: Supa Quick challenges the other tyre companies. Perfect Car Wash is also on board. Big Retailers: Pick n Pay challenges grocery retailers. Petshops and Vets: The Vetshop at Pick n Pay, Vetshop Checkers, Vetshop Onrus, Hermanus Animal Hospital (Dirkie Uys Street and Onrus) and Bergview Veterinary Hospital. Let's Celebrate National Water Week…

The National Water Week is an awareness week campaign led by the Department of Water and Sanitation. It serves as a powerful campaign mechanism re-iterating the value of water, the need for sustainable management of this scarce resource and the role water plays in eradicating poverty and under-development in South Africa. This year's Water Week scheduled for 16-22 March 2015 sees integration between government departments, municipalities, entities and NPO's as they all pull resources together to ensure that the awareness campaign is a success in the Western Cape through different activities and events to be run throughout the month of March. The Breede-Gouritz CMA will visit 32 schools in the Cape Winelands District reaching more than 5 000 school children who will be taught about water saving tips.

Zenith Sheard from the introductory class sets off on his scooter, and at the starting line waiting to be waved on for the chal lenge were Mieke Kuyler, Mia Bogacz and Summer Thwaits.

EDITORIAL COMMENT Let art and nature nurture and unite us Hermanus is renowned for its scenic beauty, environmental wealth and heritage, award-winning wines, and as a mecca for the performing and visual arts. Yes, this town and its surrounding areas abound in creative, inspired people who add a dynamic dimension to the rich cultural life we enjoy. Be it those classical music concerts regularly brought to us, the number of artists and art galleries in the Overstrand, the First Fridays Artwalk, the Kalfiefees, or the increasingly popular annual Hermanus FynArts Festival, there is always something on offer designed to feed the soul. With Hermanus FynArts establishing a fund to make their programme of events accessible to a broader audience, with an emphasis on education, our cultural development as a society is in good hands. In the same way, making the art world and the experience of its great diversity available to people who would never otherwise have had the opportunity, has great communitybuilding potential. It’s lovely to enjoy all this culture and fine living around us, but unless we are all willing to share this privilege with one another, we will remain divided and separate.

Putting the record straight I would like to thank Mrs Mitchell for congratulating the Sandbaai Neighbourhood Watch and enquiring on how to contact them. But I need to put the record straight. All the neighbourhood watches in Hermanus fall under the Police Forum, which is a legislated structure that establishes a partnership between the police and the community, and its purpose is to establish and maintain a safe and secure environment for its citizens. The neighbourhood watches are the operational arm of the Community Police Forum. The NHW are in contact with all their members by radio and do regular patrols at various times every night, during the week. Via their base, they are in contact with the police, emergency services, and the security companies. They are registered with the Department of Community Safety and carry official identification cards. Residents are asked to voluntarily contribute R50 per year and they are given identification stickers to place on their homes. These funds are used to buy radios, batteries and equipment. The members give of their time and petrol freely, as their civic duty. The emergency contact number of the Sandbaai NHW is 083 962 8462. This number is manned 24 hours a day and the operator is in contact with the members by radio, who respond to the problem. The chairman is Nico Hechter and his contact numbers are 028 316 3316 and cell 082 735 9144

Don’t give up there is hope Hi all you compassionate people of Hermanus. Today my wife, son and I want to share our story in order to give people in need hope and the assurance that in your town Hermanus there is help and assistance if you are experiencing hardship. All you’ve got to do is ask. This is our story of how life can knock you down and strangers can pick you up and put you back on your feet. My name is Fanie de Klerk, mechanic by trade. I lived with my wife and son in Boksburg and was employed at a company as working foreman, when things turned for the worse when the company was declared bankrupt. We moved to Hermanus where I got a temporary job as mechanic. Again things turned bad when we had to vacate the flat where we stayed with a family member, because the rent was behind. We had nowhere to go. No money, no friends to ask for help and we were sleeping in my car. Unemployed and about to give up on everything, I posted on a Facebook page called Hermanus Staan Saam / Hermanus Stand Together and shared my dilemma in a desperate attempt to get my wife and learning disabled son (19) out of the streets

in dark nights, sleeping very uncomfortably. Soon after the post, I was contacted by Tronel Meintjies of Hermanus Stand Together and she asked me where we were, what we needed and if she may come to us. She arrived with a hot cooked meal, toiletries and cooldrink. She asked if we could hang in there for a while longer while she would try and sort out what they can do to get us out of this predicament. In two days time, Tronel and the members of Hermanus Stand Together organised enough money for fuel and food to take us to Pretoria. While organising this, they took good care of us, making sure we were fed and safe. Don’t you think this is an awesome group ofpeoplethatreallyputsothersbeforethemselves? I want to ask people who are in a bind in life, to reach out. I am a very proud person and learned sometimes in life it’s worth it to put aside your pride so that God can show you the way forward. Also, I want to ask those who are not less fortunate, to support Hermanus Stand Together. It is a great cause with awesome people doing good. We love you all. May God bless you.

verhouding voortdra.

BLACKIE DE SWARDT EN HERMANUS ROLBALKLUBLEDE

Municipality responds to building rubble problem Roderick Williams, director: Community Services, responds to letters regarding building rubble at Klein River lagoon: The municipality appointed contractors to evaluate the exposed building rubble and various solutions were proposed. The scenarios were presented to the executive management team (full-time councillors and senior managers) by the Municipal Environmental Section. The most cost-effective option, to slope and cover the exposed concrete, was the preferred option. The proposal is currently being formulated in the basic assessment report, which will be presented to the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEADP) for approval. Funding still needs to be secured for the option to be approved by DEADP. The building rubble was dumped in the 1980s and rehabilitated to form the particular parking and picnic areas. The lagoon however, naturally breached the mouth in August 2013 and again in June 2014, next to the particular area and partially exposed the rubble. The particular mouth also naturally closed in December 2014 and the risk of further damage by the water is no longer a factor. It must also be noted that the affected area (parking) is approximately 500 metres east of the Blue Flag beach. It does not form part of the international Blue Flag beach status.

Thank you for support Regarding the house that burnt down in Recreation Road Fisherhaven (HT 5 March): I sincerely wish to thank the entire community of the Overstrand for the support they have given during the horrific passing of my companion Ian Basson. I am truly at a loss for words! The Van Rensburg family, the ambulance services, hospital staff, Warren, Coenie from HAWS, who retrieved our dogs and Ian’s car, etc, the SAPS, Lt September, Det Xotyewil, Const Thomas, the amazing fire brigade. Then Choekie who has trauma counselled me and been a mentor. The Onrus Church for clothing and shoes. My friends, Aunty Jeanie, Michele and Margi for carrying me in this traumatic time. You are all special people. Ian has a lovely son named Connor, who will continue the Basson legacy.

Quick action by fire crew prevented another wildfire Voëlklip residents noticed a pall of smoke on the path up to the 3 dams at about 7 pm on Saturday evening. Within minutes of receiving their call the fire crew arrived and entered the reserve. As the light faded the smoke and flames seemed to increase, however within half an hour both were significantly reduced. The fire truck returned to the parking area and refilled the tanks from a municipal water supply, leaving the crew up on the path. The fire team continued to damp down the area to ensure no flare ups and left the scene after 9 pm. It had been a busy day for the fire fighters as they had returned from

an earlier call-out to Pearly Beach. The fire is believed to have started from a carelessly dropped stompie along the path! A follow-up the next day revealed that a relatively small area had burnt. The walk also provided clear evidence that more than a few walkers have sloppy butt disposal habits. The consequences could have been dire, had the Overstrand Fire team not been so quick to respond and due in no small part to the observant residents. Grateful thanks to our diligent fire fighters once again.

oostewind gepeper is.

New owner and makeover for Onrus Health and Beauty

The team at Onrus Health and Beauty in cludes owner Charmaine Naude (seated), Aphten Mathews, Chrystal Pietersen and Jea nine Preece (manager).

Onrus Health and Beauty, which offers natural, simply beauty, has had a fresh new makeover. The beauty salon’s glamourous transformation has been overseen by new owner, Charmaine Naude. To celebrate the salon’s new ownership and facelift, a launch party was held at Sprokkel ster, across the road from the beauty shop, on Fri day evening, 27 February. Charmaine, who lives in Paarl but has a holiday home in Onrus, says she was a regular client at Onrus Health and Beauty, and when she heard that Jeanine Preece, the previous owner, wanted to sell the salon, she decided to buy it. Charmaine, a statuesque and perfectly groomed woman, says she has been in the beauty

industry all her life. “I prefer to do the fashion side of things. I was involved in the fashion weeks for many years, and was responsible for styling the models.” She says the models needed to look after their skin, in order to provide a good base to work from. Charmaine has visited the great salons of the world, and has put her experience and expertise into refurbishing and extending Onrus Health and Beauty. The salon, which had one treatment room, has beenextendedtoincludethreeelegantrooms, and health and beauty therapist, Jeanine Preece, is now the manager of the salon. Treatments include, among others, facials,

peels, massages, reflexology, body scrubs, mani cures and pedicures. Your well being, from headtotoe, is in profes sional hands, and treatments are tailored to suit each client’s individual needs. A range of exclusive beauty and body treatment products used in the salon, are also available as retail purchases. Esmé Bronkhorst, fundraiser for APD, and Nazeen Aziz (left), representing the sponsor, hand over the keys to Pieter Coetzee.

Annual fundraiser helps people with disabilities The Overstrand Association for Persons with Disabilities (ADP) received a big donation to use at its centre after the Western Cape ADP held its 25th Car Competition. Pieter Coetzee from Riversdale won a brand-new Suzuki Alto, which was on display at Checkers in Hermanus for a number of weeks where many

hopeful residents and visitors bought tickets for this worthy cause. All proceeds enable the continued work of participating APDs, including the Overstrand, in the Western and Southern Cape. Anyone interested in becoming involved with the association’s work can contact the APD at 2 overstrandapd@hermanus.co.za or 0 028 315 2610.

Operation Brakkenjan is currently running on reserve fuel. Annelie le Roux, co-founder of this initiative, says the demand for enough dog and cat food is, like always, high and that the food donations collected at the different stores in and around Hermanus are almost depleted. Joyce Rawstorne (90) still goes to Zwelihle twice a week to feed the dogs and cats in need, but with the food donations received being less than usual, any extra contributions will be much appreciated. Operation Brakkenjan, in conjunction with the Hermanus Times, is an organisation dedicated to collecting pet food to feed neglected and hungry dogs and cats in and around Hermanus. Since its inception during the winter of 2008, the organisation has grown and trolleys where donations can be dropped off, are available at Pick n Pay, Eastcliff Spar, Gateway SuperSpar and Checkers. For more information on the Brakkenjan project, please contact Annelie on 082 516 6446.

Look out for these designated trollies at se lected stores in and around Hermanus.

– LINDA ZAAIMAN

Werkloosheidversekeringsfonds (WVF) Werk Vir Jou. Hoekom is daar ’n WVF ? 5.Afhanklikheidsvoordele Die oorlewende man of vrou is geregtig op die voordele.

7. Indien die bydraer voordele ontvang volgens ’n werkloosheidskema of fonds ingestel ingevolge die Wet op Arbeidsverhoudinge of deur ’n Bedingingsraad. 8. Golf roundup with Julian Shaw Men’s Wednesday: After all the medals of the past week, getting back to normal with a nice betterball stableford was a welcome relief. The week saw 111 players on one course, 1 to 18. Winning the day and The Harold Wood trophy on 49 terrific points were Faan Pretorius and Reinhard Buhr, just edging out Etienne Rossouw and Peter Boshoff on 47. This cup was first played for in 1954. The ball pool paid to 44 and there were 3 two clubs. Saturday’s competition: The greens ran at a healthy 8.5 and the format was a friendly alliance stableford. Due to league on the one course, players utilised the other two. Winning on the East course with 92 points were Marius Furst, Steyn van Riet, Ray Calitz and Dave Martheze. Taking top honours on the South course with an impressive 93 points were GP le Roux, Peter Richardson, Shaun Gardiner and yours truly. There were only 3 two clubs and the ball pool paid to 90. League: The Brodie and Kruger league matches were played here in Hermanus. Our Kruger team played Kleinmond and managed a half, 4 wins a side. Our Brodie team didn’t fare so well against an in form Caledon side and lost 5 to 3. Tee levelling: Just a small note on the re-establishing level tees. A company has been contracted to help with this, and already the results are magnificent. We do however apologise for any inconvenience, the big machines will soon be gone.

GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

It’s a sweet nr 6 for Ladies champ

The 2015 Hermanus Golf Club Ladies champion has been crowned. And what a different set of conditions the championships were played under compared to the men’s.

On day one a strong wind came through blowing the ladies all over the place and on day two it was 34 degrees in the shade, and we all know golf is not played in the shade. Many congratulations to the winner, Lynne Behagg, who has now won the competition six times. She managed a total of 156 and admits it’s not her best score, but in those conditions she’s a worthy champion. Lynne won the May Redman Salver.

The runner-up’s best gross was Emma Hayter on 172; Emma also won the senior best overall nett on 144. Winning the best overall nett in this division was Nokki Benade on 147. The bronze division winner and the winner of the Dorothy Bushell Salver was Zenith Meiring on 187, and topping off a fine haul, she also won the best overall nett on 145. Our copper division winner, also winning the best gross for her division and the best overall nett, was Jackie MacDonald. She scored a super 211 gross and 151 nett. To all the ladies who took part, well done, and to our greens superintendent, Malcolm of STM, well done in those tricky conditions. - JULIAN SHAW

Local cyclists compete in Tour de Boland Riders from Hermanus who participated in the Open Category of the Tour de Boland cycle tour from 2 to 6 March included Mathew Browne, Philip-Ben Kotze, Nicky Walker, Michèle van Niekerk and Jacqui Jackson. They also rode in commemoration of friend and fellow cyclist Paul van Zyl, who had been preparing to ride the Tour. The Tour de Boland is one of the few stage races for road bikes in South Africa. The

5-day tour followed a circular route, which started and ended in Paarl, taking cyclists through Worcester, Ceres, Tulbagh and Riebeeck Kasteel, over a distance of 465 km and included an individual 30 km time trial on day three. The route included a few passes, such as Franschhoek, Mitchells Pass and a sweltering Gydo Pass at 44°C on the hottest day, Tuesday 3 March. The final ascent took riders to the finish line at the historic Language Monument in Paarl. Total ascent was around 4 500 metres. The Elite category was won by Nolan Hoffman, who also won the abbreviated Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday. The women’s Elite section was clinched by Swiss born Ariane Kleynhans. – MICHÉLE VAN NIEKERK

Die wedstryd het goeie rugby opgelewer.

Atlantic wen tweede derby teen Black Birds Atlantic se rugbyspan het Saterdag 7 Maart hul tweede derby tuis teen Black Birds 17-5 gewen.

– W.C.M. GIBSON
