Hy was ’n besoeker by die betrokke woning met die tweejarige kind by hom.”

Volgens Stephen Müller, direkteur: infrastruktuur en beplanning by Overstrand Munisipaliteit, kan hulle ingevolge die bou- en beplanningsregulasies ondersoek instel na die strukture sowel as die gebruike wat beoefen word. three year lease that was granted by the Overstrand Municipality to provide accommodation for the homeless at the Hermanus Clinic’s garages in Harmony Street, has expired and will not be renewed. The shelter will be open for its last night on Friday 27 February and cleared out on Saturday 28th. A letter of termination of services has already been given to the shelter’s supervisor. Abbott says between six and eight regular residents of the facility will be affected by the closure. When the weather is cold, more people seek shelter and up to 12 homeless people could be accommodated. Abbott says that everything that was done at the night shelter was illegal and was contravening, among other things, health, building and fire regulations. “We knew this from the beginning,” he says. He and the association did their best to fix up the facility and to make it liveable when the OM asked the Night Shelter Association to take responsibility for running it. Abbott says it was a humanitarian issue and was not meant to be a permanent solution. “The bottom line is that the council is not comfortable about renewing the lease.” He says the money collected to keep the shelter going will go towards developing the new shelter and although land has been allocated opposite the Waste Transfer Station in Swartdam Road for this purpose, “it has been allocated in a technical sense but not yet in writing.” Piet van Zyl, a resident of Hermanus, asks: “Where must the homeless go between now and when the new shelter is completed? Is there not a social responsibility issue here?” Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie says: “A meetingwasheldwithLesAbbotinJanuarytoexplain that the three year lease agreement would lapse

at the end of February and we cannot renew it due to legal reasons. “The municipality encouraged the Hermanus Night Shelter management to use the time to try and find alternative accommodation for the frequent shelter users. “The fact that they have been unable to do so would either mean that they did not attempt or that people are not willing to help or cannot help. “ The municipality has done all it can and cannot assist. We simply do not have anywhere to accommodate the people. The shelter at the current location was not supposed to be a permanent arrangement”. Botha-Guthrie adds that in many European countries, churches take turns to accommodate homeless people in their halls. “ Is this impossible for the churches in Hermanus? The shelter has the management plan and people to supervise and know their clients – can they not assist twelve people through the winter?” The mayor says the clinic site is in the market and it is part of the tennis club land to be sold that will help with funding the re-establishment of the tennis club at the new sports complex. She says the municipality does have a social responsibility: “To that end the constitution requires us to promote social development. “In a sense the majority of the services rendered by the municipality are aimed at improvingpeople’s socialconditions–housing, electricity, water, sewerage, refuse removal etc. “We also have a social development department that focuses on children, youth, gender issues, the elderly, people with disabilities and people with HIV/AIDS. “Regrettably we cannot cater for the needs of each and every one, and in this instance we need to pull together as a community to assist these homeless people where we can.”

Henry Lerm told the Hermanus Times this week that the approval will upgrade the status of the hotel. “The project will be done in phases, in conjunction with a professional team, to ensure minimum discomfort to guests of the hotel,” Lerm said. “And, after three inspections done by different role players, there is ample parking for our guests.” Lerm says, like always, local contractors will enjoy preference on this project.

The baby foal from the feral horses, which caused quite a debate amongst Fisherhaven residents recently, died on Friday 20 February in what is described as a freak accident. The feral horses living in the Fisherhaven area have, since the accident, moved to the Rooisand area near Kleinmond. Eye witnesses say the foal broke its neck after his mother accidentally rolled over him near Meerensee on Friday morning. “You could see his neck was broken and he died on impact,” Leon Steyn, environmental specialist at the Overstrand Municipality said on Monday. The feral horses have been under discussion for many years and most residents say the wild horses are a delight. “We are privileged to live in a rural town which the horses have also made home.” The residents have taken it upon themselves to protect these horses by setting up a “WhatsApp” group and a Facebook page to alert residents when the horses are approaching the R43. “It is very sad, that this foal went through so much in his short life time, and finally, when he is almost 100% healthy and strong, a freak accident of this nature occurs,” Steyn said. In the mean time, Steyn says he is not sure wether the rest of the horses left the Meerensee area because the foal died, or because of the recent veld fires in Hawston. “But the group of horses are currently in Rooisand.”

Dis regtig ’n be sonderse voorreg en eer.

Ek speel gewoonlik Johannes of He rodus. My vrou, Christa, speel Maria; my seun, Liam, was altyd klein Jesus en my dogtertjie, Mia, is een van die kindertjies by Jesus.

Police divers search in vain for more body parts After the discovery of a severed human foot on Grotto beach in mid-January, followed by two legs found floating in the sea near Abagold and a second foot in the New Harbour at the end of January, a police diving unit has been searching for more body parts. Lt Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus SAPS said the divers were active in the area near the New Harbour in the vicinity of Abagold from Thurs-

Die dogter bly nou by haar tannie.

Woman robbed A 38-year-old woman from Stanford was surprised by two robbers that entered her home on Sunday 22 February just after 05:00 in the morning. She was sleeping when suddenly she woke up at the sound of her bedroom door opening in her house in Moore Street. She sat up and saw two men in her bedroom, and started to scream for help. The suspects told her to keep quiet and one of the men grabbed her and put his hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming further. They grabbed her bag containing camera accessories and an iPad all worth R18 490. There are currently no suspects but a jacket that was found on the scene has been sent for DNA analysis.

A DEAF SENTENCE

(With apologies to David Lodge) Why would you want to draw attention to hearing loss or hearing aids? Is it better to compensate for a hearing loss by smiling or nodding your head when you miss what is said? Or camouflaging your hearing aids so that others don't see them! Why do many of us believe this? Yet we accept wearing glasses and as we age not being able to run at the same speed as a 20 year old or perhaps not run at all! Hearing loss is a 'silent' sentence. No obvious signs of suffering are exhibited while a slow isolation from friends, family and the world grows. Quality of life is affected for you and for those around you. Hearing loss affects people of all ages, but most notably the older population. The global population of older persons is growing by 2 per cent a year, considerably faster than the population as a whole. The fastest growing age group in the world is the oldest, those aged 80 years and older and hearing loss is the third most common condition affecting seniors (following arthritis and hypertension). Three in ten people over the age of 60 have hearing loss. This escalates to 90% in the over 80 age group. Anyone can assist a person with hearing loss by improving their own communication and supportive skills by; · Getting the individual's attention before speaking using touch or a name · Speaking slightly slower but not over-articulating · Limiting background noise – try for quiet · Making use of the listener's other senses – look at the listener, ensure that light is on your face, use gestures with speech · Not shouting especially if the person is wearing hearing aids · Encouraging comprehensive evaluation of hearing with a diagnostic hearing test · Participating in a trial period with hearing aids · Supporting the hearing aid user The month of March is International 'Hearing Awareness Month'. During this month 30 full hearing evaluations (not just a screening) for adults and children will be offered FREE of charge. Don't turn a deaf ear to life. Choose to hear.

Queues and confined space, caused by onestop service at traffic department, are being addressed All traffic related services including motor vehicle registrations, licence renewals, paying of fines, issuing of parking permits are being handled at the traffic department in Mussel Street, since October last year. According to Santie Reyneke-Naudé, director of finance, one of the reasons for this move was to create a one-stop service point to stop the need for residents to have to travel between the traffic department and the municipal building to complete their transport related requirements. But confined space, too few cashiers, and long queues at the traffic department are leading to frustration and complaints by clients. Rudi Fraser, head of traffic and licensing, says these issues are being discussed. “The appointment of another cashier will help alleviate the queuing, and we are investigating the parking issues and the possibility of enlarging the current building.” To prevent an unnecessary visit to the traffic departement, the public is reminded that

cheque payments for motor license renewals can be placed in the postbox at the cashiers, and EFT payments can be made. But only if the license has not expired, or is done within the 21 day grace period. If the renewal is outside of this period, the cost will be more. Klein River Cheese farm changes hands, but remains a family affair

Riaan Lourens with Jaco van Beulen, who has been pioneering cheese making at Klein River Cheese.

A chance meeting between Klein River Cheese owner Riaan Lourens and Lomond winemaker Wayne Gabb was a step towards a new future for two families. Gabb introduced Lourens to Tzaneen-based businessman Peter Baleta, and this meeting meant new owners for this awardwinning cheese farm outside Stanford. The Baleta family will be taking over on 1 March, which means current owner Riaan can now spend more time on other adventures such as 4x4 explorations. Riaan inherited the Kleinrivierskloof family farm, and started a dairy with wife Shelley, whom he met while both were scholars at Hermanus High. Their farming activities were soon extended to include cheese-making, a way of getting rid of surplus milk. The couple found that South Africans had developed a fondness for the stronger, nuttier Gruyère and focused on filling this gap in the market. With the help of Swiss-German Johannes Harslem, then working at Camphill, the Lourens family embarked on their cheesemaking journey. Johannes showed Napier-based Jacko van Beulen the ropes and soon the awards started rolling in for the family and team of twenty local employees.

The accolades continued, with the highlights being their popular Gruyère being named Dairy Product of the Year in 2004, followed by the Grana award (for Parmesanstyle cheeses) in 2014 , making Klein River Cheese the only producer to achieve this distinction twice. The confirmation that their cheeses could compete on a world stage has been a highlight for Riaan and Shelley. Shelley also values the time the family spends, travelling to cheese festivals, working side by side to introduce their cheeses and interacting directly with consumers. It is this same blending of family bonds with entrepreneurial spirit that Riaan recognised in the Baleta family. The Baletas arrived lock, stock and barrel on Valentines Day to settle on the farm where they now live, only a few steps from their new office and business. ”Klein River Cheese for me was love at first sight,” says Peter, who managed to wrap up affairs on the Tzaneen side in record time. He then set the wheels in motion for the passage down south moving from a thriving achar business to cheese making. Wife Maggie had done her homework and completed a basic cheese-making course at Stellenbosch University with student son Matthew. Now they will work side by side

with Shelley, learning more about the cheese process. “With three children studying in Stellenbosch and working in Cape Town, we are looking forward to spending weekends together on the farm,” says Maggie. “I will continue with my interest in community development and greening the farm and business, building on the success of the Lourens family.” In a fortunate coincidence, the Baletas founded the Stanford Lake College in 1998 in Tzaneen to ensure that their children did not have to move to receive education. Now the family has discovered a second Stanford, that will be home and school in one to them. Son Nicholas, a marine engineer, is excited about putting the family ideas and dreams in motion, while Maggie’s flair as interior designer will come in useful at the retail shop and picnic facility. - FRIEDA LLOYD

Family fun at Bird Fair in Stanford Birders are twitching their way to Stanford in large numbers for the Walker Bay Bird Fair, where there is also much for families with children to enjoy. Many of the exhibits at the Whale Coast Conservation tent will appeal to children. Stripes the Eco Cat will be there. He has written stories especially for them with tales about a robin chat that understands sustainability, a pelican that can swallow Stripes whole for breakfast, an oyster catcher that doesn’t catch oysters and the case of the canny Klaas’s Cuckoo. Stripes’ stories will be read to children (and adults) in the municipal boardroom at 16:00 this Friday (27 Feb) and at 10:00 on Saturday morning. The children will each receive copies of some of the stories to take home. There will be computers with touch-screens for children to call up pictures of the birds of Walker Bay as well as the frogs of the area. Each picture of a bird or frog plays the call of that animal. This is a great way of helping people to identify frogs in the dark, which is when they usually call. A model of a rock pool will introduce children to the wonders of the sea-shore and tell them why we love a Hope Spot. The exhibition is open from 10:00 to 17:00 on Friday and Saturday and entry is free.

Volunteers needed to ‘rise and shine’ The Enlighten Education Trust is looking for volunteers to instil a love of reading in young children. In partnership with the Overberg Education District, a Hermanus chapter of the Shine literacy project will shortly get off the ground in Zwelihle and Lukhanyo Primary schools in Hermanus, where the focus will be on individual Grade 2 learners. If you would like to help create a nation of readers, this is your chance. You will make a critical investment in the lives of young children, opening up a world of discovery and learning to them, which will last a lifetime. A two-day training course on 4 and 5 March will give you the skills needed for the task. For further information, or to offer your services, call the Enlighten Trust Shine co-ordinator, Rothea Kleynhans at 082 327 3531.

From apprentice artist to gallery owner KERRY VAN RENSBURG In his first month as an apprentice artist, Petrus Viljoen sold more than 250 paintings, mostly small colourful nudes and landscapes along with numerous larger canvases. Petrus, 29, recently opened his own art gallery in High Street called Art 2 Action. Snowy, the dog from the Tintin comic books, sits on the sidewalk outside his gallery. Just inside stands Tintin himself, watching over the collection. Petrus, who has no formal training, spent seven years working for established artist Leon Muller of Art Thirst, also in High Street, before opening his own gallery. He says this is where he received his training and he owes the discovery and development of his talent and subsequent success to Muller. He says: “Before that, I hardly even drew a picture in my life and if I did, it was only ever displayed on my mother’s fridge.” Petrus, who initially sold an average of 64 paintings a day after he joined Leon, has a small studio in his gallery and says his artwork is being sold even before the paint is dry.

“I have more than 700 clients all over the world.” He still seems dumbfounded by his success, but is quick to admit: “If it wasn’t for Leon, I would be an artist on the street.” Petrus believes that if you find your passion, the money will follow. His work is light, colourful, uninhibited and full of youthful energy: “I tell my clients – you don’t buy a painting, you buy a feeling.”

Audit practice appoints new director Two of the many developments at Boshoff Visser Hermanus are the recent takeover of AccFin Services, as well as the appointment of Mariska Koekemoer as director of Boshoff Visser in January 2015. As from 1 March 2015 all the activities of AccFin Services will move to the Boshoff Visser offices in Church Street. Pieter Rautenbach, current owner of AccFin Services, will still be actively involved with Boshoff Visser. Pieter is a cost and man agement accountant with many years of ex perience and wellknown in Hermanus, . Boshoff Visser is a mediumsized audit practice with more than 20 branches in South Africa. The firm initially opened their doors in Her manus during September 2014 with the takeover of the practice previously known as OPN Chartered Accountants. Boshoff Visser Hermanus is under the management of Mariska Koekemoer, with the direct cooperation of the Grabouw branch director, Wessel Steyn – both char tered accountants and registered auditors. Mariska has been part of the group for four years. In 2010 she graduated among the top 15% of her B Accounting Honours class at the University of Stellenbosch.

Jacques Fourie of Genesis Private Clients says: “I have been working with Mariska for the last year and have been thoroughly impressed by her. “She has a ‘can do’ attitude, is very effi cient and pragmatic and maintains an abso lute duty of care towards her client. I wish Mariska and her team all the best for their new venture.” Kim Montgomery, business consultant in Hermanus, says that she feel secure in the knowledge that the Boshoff Visser branch in Hermanus, supported by specialists with in the Boshoff Visser network, is able to offer businesses, and herself in particular, out standing professional guidance and sup port in their field of expertise. According to Svenia von Thelemann of Harmonie Property Services, the service that she received from Boshoff Visser has been far superior to any service she has received from any accounting firm. “They have been my lifesavers!” “With our experience in Grabouw’s agri culture and wine operations, we look for ward to assisting the businesses, wine cel lars, restaurants and guest houses in the Hermanus area with our excellent service,” says Mariska.

so goed werk.”

Landlord’s remarks about book shop are ‘somewhat personal’

NATURE MATTERS EDITORIAL COMMENT Is the justice system failing us? With 47 drugrelated arrests having been executed since beginning January to date, one may well ask: How many more deaths and children getting lost in the system must there be before all government role players join forces to seriously tackle this problem head on? One cannot help but wonder, of the 47 arrests made, how many of the suspects are walking the streets again. The community is constantly urged to become involved in assisting the police in making these arrests, but why risk putting your life on the line, knowing that many of these cases are being dropped due to lack of evidence or multiple other reasons? If the number of arrests being made are compared with the number of suspects be ing convicted and those back on the streets within days, it’s understandable if the com munity members and the police become discouraged. Perhaps the criminal justice system should consider setting bail much higher for drug traffickers. But, however we look at this dire situa tion, something needs to be done to stem the tide of drug abuse in our community. Whatever happens, we cannot give up the fight.

Shop owner responds on rental tariffs In response to commentary from Greg Altonade Klerk / Adek (HT 19/2) with regards to the current rental of The Book Cottage being R153 per square metre is incorrect. Our current rental is R26 375,52 divided by his calculations of 137 square metres is equal to R192,52 per square metre including VAT. However when we measured out the shop our enclosed space for retail is 78,5 m², veranda is 24 m², plus office and kitchen space 25,65 m² comes to a total space of 129 m². So R26 375,52 divided by 129 m² is a total of R204,50 per square metre. Comparative rentals in the Cape Town (sourced: Google search) area are as follows: Century City R140-R175 per m² V&A Waterfront R370 per m² Green Point R120-R250 per m² N1 City R65-R150 per m² Somerset West Mall R75 – R250 per m² Harbour Road rental in Hermanus on average is R150 per m² according to other tenants that I have spoken to. Despite the high rental, it’s through local support, great staff and good management that we have managed to keep our doors open for 19 years in Harbour Road. We are looking forward to the next 20 years, and even longer, in our new premises at 17 Long Street.

Drewes’ Moss Frog (Arthroleptella drewesii) is known only from the wellprotected slopes of the lower Kleinriver Mountain (Fernkloof, Maanschynkop and Vogelgat Na ture Reserves) and Babilonstoring, near Hermanus. This tiny frog is found only in fyn bos. It breeds in wet mossy areas near densely vegetated streams and hillside seepages. It lays its small eggs in moss where they hatch as frog lets, rather than tadpoles. Its call resembles a highpitched trilling cricket chirp. Hearing them is a special privilege, but do not disturb them, they may soon be the last ones left. PHOTO: TREVOR HARDAKERURE

Putting high rentals into perspective For a landlord to ascribe mismanagement to a business, rather than paying attention to an exorbitant monthly rental and minimum building maintenance, is taking a cheap shot. The major cause for the demise of speciality shops in the Old Town CBD can be directly attributed to the extremely high rentals imposed by landlords. A number of empty premises in this area bears testimony to the current shaky economy, the town’s geographical shift of business parameters and not least, an inflexible outlook by some landlords who believe because the sea is situated a few hundred metres away, that this justifies steep rentals. Owner of Book Cottage, Meghan Warren rightly points out that Hermanus is seasonal. And although the town is growing, small businesses still have to carry themselves through some gruelling winter months. To add to this challenge, the principle of an annual rent increase of 10% is unrealistic as the GDP fluctuates around the 3,5% to 5% mark per annum. This slow growth rate, currently experienced in the country, is sel-

dom taken into consideration by landowners. In our own business, we have been fortunate to have a landlord who was prepared to negotiate a more favourable and sustainable rental. The current situation of a popular eighteen-year-old business having no option but to move premises in search of a more affordable rental clearly shows that the time has come for change. Property owners who are often absent and disconnected from the real picture, and certainly in times like these, need to sit down with their tenants and talk in order for a compromise to be made. This especially, so as not to lose those shops that make up the character of a town, bearing in mind that tourist appeal is more about speciality boutiques rather than busy malls and franchises. Book Cottage in Harbour Road has always been one of those shops opening its doors seven days a week, making customer service a priority. For that alone this landmark business deserves an accolade!

NOEL HUNT

I was the tenant of the adjacent property no. 8 Harbour Road from 2001, being Essence, a gallery and white décor business. Sue McNaught at the Book Cottage was my neighbour and Gita Finlayson along the road. My late husband Dave and our golden retriever Jason would entertain our customers and often bypassers on Saturday mornings. We would open a bottle of bubbles on good days and two on not so good days! Locals visiting the library opposite came by and loved the ambience of our tranquil space. The Market at Lemms Corner created atmosphere and was a great asset to this street at that time. Both Sue and myself greatly improved these premises, at our cost, and at that time the square metres of no. 8 was calculated to include the open stoep, which was unusable in inclement weather. The rental at that time was on a par with Kloof Street in the City Bowl Cape Town. So I can well understand with the escalation clause in their lease that the nostalgic Book Cottage would have to find alternative premises. No doubt the landlord would have the mindset of “business is business”, which as a property developer, is to be anticipated, however, I consider his remarks about the management of the Book Cottage to be somewhat unprofessional and personal.

Water quality of lagoon should be made public I have retired to Onrusrivier some seven years ago and thoroughly enjoy the time. My children live fairly near and come visit often with my three grandsons. They love visiting Oupa and Ouma. They also love playing in the fairly well maintained park, but being water babies, they love even more going down to the Onrus lagoon. The unfortunate part is that they just as often have upset tummies afterwards. On two occasions they had to rush to the pharmacy for medication! It is not from too much sweets, I promise! The only conclusion I can come to is that they have ingested lagoon water as toddlers are bound to do. The problem is that we never know how polluted the Onrus River is. I think the municipality should publish a weekly report on the pollution in the river. It could be included in the weather report in HT – if only more accurate. A star rating will do, for instance, 1X – do not go near, 5X – acceptable. Of course there will be the argument of cost, but at what cost does this dilemma come to the residents and visitors of our lovely town? I don’t think they will do us a favour, I think they are obliged to do it. Can anybody tell me if there exists a body watching over this, and if not, shouldn’t there be an effective one?

JAN CELLIERS ONRUS

Response from Stephen Müller, Director: Infrastructure and Planning: The Environmental Management Department at the municipality tests the quality of the water every two weeks. Should the reading give cause for concern we advise Neville Dreyer, ndreyer@odm.org.za, at the Overberg Distict Municipality. His portfolio includes water quality at public recreation spots.

DID YOU KNOW?: The aptly named “Kelkiewyn” Geissorhiza radians lights up the veld in late spring. It grows in seasonally marshy areas around Darling, with smaller patches through to Gordon’s Bay. It dies back to a small bulb during the summer months when the wetlands dry up. Some species are pollinated by bees and those with dark centres are pollinated by monkey beetles. Insects perceive the purple and red markings of the flower as ne on colours, illustrating that what we see is often in the eye of the beholder. PHOTO: WHALE COAST CONSERVATION

Answers to questions about absence of trees It is now well over a year since the widening of the R43 from Sandbaai to Hermanus has been completed. We are shocked at the minimal number of trees planted along the widened road and totally disgusted that nothing has been done to landscape the area in front of upper Mount Pleasant or to plant trees there, whereas many trees have been planted outside the Hemel-en-Aarde houses. The Mount Pleasant people had bushes and trees screening them removed in the widening and nothing has been replanted. I have e-mailed the municipal manager to enquire when something will be done but had no response to date. Why can trees also not be planted on either side the whole length of the widened section?

AG DOSE ONRUS

Response from the Overstrand Municipality: This matter was raised in November 2013 as well, and the stance of the municipality remains the same: According to Stephen du Toit, Consulting Engineer from Jeffares & Green, the Hemel-enAarde Estate planted the trees along their boundary wall at their own expense.

Shrubs were planted in front of the newly erected fence in Mount Pleasant. They are still small, but in time they will cover the whole fence. Unfortunately the Provincial Road authority would not allow any kind of irrigation on the median, therefore no fynbos garden or any beautification on that section was possible. In addition to this response from the municipality, Roderick Williams, director community services, confirmed last week that “the municipality has wanted to plant trees on the upper Mount Pleasant side but the residents were against this as they were concerned about trees spoiling their views.” And response from Al-Ameen Kafaar, head of communication: Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works reads: “Our previous experience showed that for such landscaping irrigation equipment is needed. That equipment inevitably ends up leaking, causing water infiltration in the median filling. The infiltration in return causes subsidence. This is the reason why the Department did not encourage the planting of vegetation in the median.”

The cool sea winds over the past 3 weeks will make way for warmer weather as we move closer to autumn. Warm and sunny conditions can be expected over the weekend with Saturday reaching a high of around 30 degrees.

MELODRAMA ANTICS: The Her manus High School’s matric class of 2015 presented their Melodrama on 18 and 19 February and kept the audience enthralled with their energetic song and dance items. The matric council presented an item called Thriftshop.

Guys and girls in white tights and tutus in Chandelier. The guys stole the show, time and again with their hilarious antics. Patricia Lewis, well dramatised by Kristoff Krige, and the Supersterre contestants were hard pressed to im press with their raw talent. Charl van Wyk who sang Ge Kor sten’s Liefling, was a favourite and Patricia de clared: “jou ster skitter nog hel der!”

KERRY VAN RENSBURG Too Late for Tears, written by local Kleinmond author, Mo (Maureen) Riordan-Bull (photo), has all the elements that a brilliant romance novel filled with family drama and intrigue should have. The main characters, Dr Sean Hamilton, devoted family doctor, and his patient-come-receptionist, Romaine Turner, are complex and have flaws and frailties we can all relate to. This tumultuous love story, set against the backdrop of Table Mountain, is skillfully wo-

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) held its first Cansa Shavathon 12 years ago, and in 2015, the event is still going strong – with men, women, children, caregivers, cancer survivors and people whose lives have been personally touched by cancer, rallying the troops and joining in on the nationwide event, each with his or her own reason for getting involved. On Saturday 28 February, at different venues in and around the Overstrand, people will have the opportunity to shave or spray their hair, donate their ponytail (of 25 cm in length – that will go towards making wigs for cancer patients in need – or purchase a Cansa wrap. The cost of a shave or spray, of R50 for adults and R25 for children under 12 years old, will go towards funding the care and support programmes that Cansa offers, mainly rendered at Cansa Care Centres which deliver care and support programmes to those affected by cancer. ) Do your bit by visiting a Shavathon near you on Saturday 28 February between 09:00 and 14:00: Hermanus at Checkers from 09:00 – 14:00, Kleinmond Spar from 09:00 – 14:00, Stanford Spar from 09:00 – 14:00, Gansbaai Spar from 09:00 – 14:00 Caledon Victoria Mall from 09:00 – 14:00. ven together, and the quality of the language and the fast pace of the plot put this novel in the same league as the masters of this genre. Too late for Tears is a page turner and I could not put it down until the last page. The story is believable, the characters real and the ending of this emotionally charged saga, while unexpected, is lifelike. Mo Riordan-Bull’s first published novel was a pleasant surprise and surpassed my expectations. It’s on sale in Kleinmond at Oupa’s Bookshop in 2nd Street (0 028 271 4920) and at Harbour Road Books in Harbour Road (0 028 271 5491).

SEEFF EXPANDS RENTAL DEPARTMENT: Seeff Properties recently purchased Cprop in Onrus and Du Toit Rentals in Sandbaai. Both companies provided professional long and shortterm rentals for over a decade, so, with Wilna and Wilkie du Toit retiring, it was a per fect opportunity for Reon van der Merwe, principal at Seeff Properties, to expand the rental side of the business. This will enable them to offer bigger and better service to both holiday and longterm rentals alike. The rental department will be run by the women at their Sand baai office. The three parties included Reon van der Merwe, Sheila du Toit (former owner of Du Toit Rentals), Nicky Krupski (Seeff Rentals), Wilna and Wilkie du Toit (former owners of CProperties) and Jaco Van der Merwe (manager – Seeff Properties).

OVERSTRAND MUNICIPALITY ERF 966, 73 MAIN ROAD, SANDBAAI, OVERSTRAND MUNICIPAL AREA : PROPOSED REZONING: OVERPLAN & ASSOCIATES ON BEHALF OF EAGLE VALLEY PROPERTIES 125 CC Notice is hereby given in terms of Section 17 of the Land Use Planning Ordinance, 1985 (Ordinance 15 of 1985) that an application has been received for the Rezoning of Erf 966, Sandbaai from Residential Zone I : Single Residential to Business Zone III : Local Business (B3).

VOLUNTEER TEACHERS: The Someleze (we are strong) group of volunteers, made up of both teach ers and nonteachers, was estab lished in 2013 and every Tuesday afternoon they spend an hour help ing learners at Hermanus Waldorf School improve their English. David Colllie, a member of the group, says: “It has been rewarding to see attitudes change and the learners’ – Gr 3 to 7 – confidence and ability grow. As English is not their first language, their understanding has improved most satisfactorily.” Classes are small to encourage onetoone teaching. An extra maths class has been started with similar success. The English literacy group in cludes, back from left, Kitty van Rijswijk, Dr Jenny Morris, Maureen Moult, Adele Shap iro, Ninky Matthee and Margaret Loesch. In front, Lorraine van Rensburg, Jenny Webb and David Collie. To assist the group, who needs more volunteers to cover additional grades, please call David Collie on 082 778 8002 or Ninky Matthee on 082 634 3590.

Double dose of DOGS

17 Feb: Kleinmond Individual Stableford (Log) / 4BBB: “O you gods, …this was the most unkin dest cut of all” DOGSbody lost three strokes from his handicap after a PB but didn’t even win the competition. Steady Freddy came up from behind and stabbed him with a vicious countback – et tu, Brute! A second PB came from the Sporting Cock but that was Much Ado About Noth ing. Another greatly improved perform ance from the Jolly Green Giant, gave him a wonderful Midsummer Night’s Dream. Old DOG Richard’s outing though was a Comedy of Errors but the postmatch ses sion proved that All’s Well that Ends Well. ) Stableford: 42 Fred Garrett, Dave Smith; 41 Doug Ross; 40 Jon Forsyth; 39 Michel Maury; 37 Ian Newman; 36 Bob Barton; 35 John Horobin; 34 Tony Jones, Tony Wreglesworth, Paul Martin (guest), Deon Pheiffer; 31 Morgan O’Kennedy, Art Rae, Hugh Frangs, Koos Roelofse; 30 Tony Hackett, John Armitage (guest), Da vid Naylor; 29 Rob Welton, Alan Smith, Dave Rade, Dave Brittain, Alan Calder; 28 Gary Wentzel; 26 Peter Theron, Trevor Vaughan; 25 Pat Dewil; 19 Richard Ed monds (guest); 4BBB: 48 Doug Ross / Mi chel Maury. DAVE SMITH 24 Feb: Kleinmond Individual Stableford (Log) / 4BBB: It was a small step for man but for Huge it was a giant leap to the top of the leader board. For a short hitter, he hits it a long way. There were a number of disappoint ments lower down the large and highsco ring field. In particular, Constable (Traffic Division) Barfly’s rather woeful score of 39 was caused by a very poor putting dis play. His postmatch description of it is not suitable for publication in a family newspaper. Cheeseburger, Shanks and Frankie we re not disappointed, however, by the per formance of the 3 guests. On a serious note, this was the last DOGS’ Tuesday for Nita and her girls at the Kleinmond halfway house. They will be sorely missed and a hard act to follow. ) Stableford: 41 Hugh Frangs; 40 Ga ry Wentzel; 39 Bob Barton; Mannes van Zyl; David Naylor; 38 Jon Forsyth; Alan Calder; 37 Koos Roelofse; 36 Louwtjie Kruger; John Tunstall, Andre Hattingh; 35 Tony Jones; Dave Brittain; Tony Wregles worth; 34 Dave Robinson; Art Rae; 33 Da ve Rade, John Horobin; Doug Ross; 32 Andre Franken; 30 Arne Andersen, Dave Smith; Gordon Wilson; Pat Dewil; 29 Alan Smith; 27 Tony Hackett; 26 Deon Pheiffer, Ian Newman; Rob Welton; 25 John Cheesbrough; John Armitage; Trevor Vaughan; 21 Richard Edmonds (guest), Paul Martin (guest); 16 Deward (guest); 4BBB: 47 Bob Barton / John Horobin. DAVE SMITH

Golf roundup with Julian Shaw Another beautiful week has passed at the Hermanus Golf Club. Ladies Day: The format was an individual bonus bogey. Winning the North course and The Dave Clark cup was André du Plessis with 38 points and taking top honors on the South course was Paul Benade with 39 points. Ball pool paid to 35 and there were 6 two clubs. Saturday competition: The weather was perfect and the format was a betterball sta-

bleford. Brodie league: Also congratulations to our Brodie league side who kicked off their campaign with a win against Bredasdorp 5.5 to 2.5. Night Golf: The highlight of the week came on Friday evening. We had a fantastic night fun run at the golf club and night golf. The driving range was converted to a buffet of stalls each offering something delicious to eat. Forthegolfersthereweresixholesofnight golf. Each hole was decorated with glow sticksandplayedwithspecialnightglowgolf balls. Ten four-balls participated. Special mention must go to “Mad Max” Andrew Philip who played better golf at night than he does during the day. Thanks for all the birthday wishes last week, and to all the guys and girls taking part in the Club Championships, good luck and keep a steady head. Until next week keep calm and go golfing.
