FIERY DEATHTRAP: In a fire unrelated to the Hawston fire, a disabled man died in his house in Recreation Street, Fisherhaven, which caught alight shortly after 01:00 on Wednesday morning. Woken by the fire, Adari Wengrowe tried to help her disabled friend out of the burning house, but he was too heavy. She ran to the house of a neighbour, who called the fire department, but by the time of their arrival, the man, Ian Basson (54) could not be saved as the fire was burning out of control. Wengrowe was treated for burns sustained while in the house, and taken to hospital for observation. The couple’s two dogs spent the night with a neighbour and were taken in by HAWS later that day. The fire depart ment extinguished the fire and a SAPS forensic official inspected the scene. The body of Basson was then removed by pathology services. As far as can be established Basson is survived by a sister and a son.

According to Wilfred Chivell, founder-director of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT), under whose auspices it was planned and built, the centre will rehabilitate all marine birds along this part of the coastline. “Our main concern is the breeding colony of African penguins on Dyer Island, a few kilometers offshore, but we take in all marine birds reaching our centre,” said Chivell. The rehabilitation sanctuary is custombuilt with eight rooms, a clinic and laboratories. A specially designed rehabilitation area will provide temporary rehabilitative care to sick, displaced, injured, oiled and abandoned marine birds. “In the past, we had to travel to Cape Town’s SANCCOB rehabilitation centre with seabirds in need of special care. We covered more than 45 000 km over the past ten years, and spent hundreds of thousands of Rands. Now we can do it all ourselves. “We have trained staff to take care of sick or oiled marine birds and our facilities will allow us to provide the best care for each specific condition. “Our main concern is the declining stocks of African penguins breeding on Dyer Island and at the land-based colony at Stoney Point, Betty’s Bay. These two breeding areas are under immense threat, although the one at

Stoney Point has shown an increase in breeding-pair numbers and now boasts some 2 500. “The colony on Dyer Island, once one of the main breeding colonies along the SA coastline, now only has about 600 pairs. We want to stop this decline and help to achieve a turnaround in breeding-pair numbers. “Major disasters such as oil spills and bird diseases can now be treated

at the APSS and with our conservation partners Marine Dynamics and Dyer island Cruises, we have the infrastructure to act instantly if disaster strikes our area,” said Chivell. Marine bird rescue, rehabilitation and release form part of the management plan to conserve and maintain African penguins and other marine bird populations along the South African coastline. Through continued research, education and awareness programmes, the APSS, a

project driven by the DICT, aims to mitigate the human impact on marine bird colonies. Minister Hanekom said that projects of this nature are about the common good – good for environment, good for the community and good for the country as a whole. 082 563 9525 German paraglider injured after forced landing X1PTHR09-HL050315

JANHENDRIK COETZER

A visiting paraglider from Germany experienced a “hard landing after flying too low into turbulent air” above Hermanus Heights cliff on Wednesday 25 February. This ïs the second incident in February, in which a paraglider had to abort a flight. According to emergency rescue personnel on the scene, the paraglider had a slight back injury and was taken to hospital for X-rays. The paraglider’s partner, who was also flying at the same time, said the weather had suddenly changed and that they were starting to lose height. “He told me to go on and land at the bottom at the Attie Bishop grounds and that he would try and make a top-landing. Our car was parked on top of the mountain, and then he could come to fetch me. All of a sudden he disappeared and I couldn’t see much.” Bevan Pope, a local paraglider, who was also flying on the same day, said the couple had had a full site briefing, which included the warning to stay well away from that

specific cliff face at all times. “I was flying close by and kept an eye on their flight preparations while another local pilot, who had lost height, landed down near Hermanus High School. “Once the visitors were safely in the air, I top-landed in order to retrieve the one pilot

who had bottom-landed safely by car. It is a custom among pilots to save friends the long walk back to the top to get to their cars.” According to Pope there was no sighting of the two visiting pilots by the time they arrived back at the launch site. “I enquired after them and spectators on the launch site said they had seen the pilot in question landing heavily. “They went off to look for him on foot, and I opted to fly again and search for him from the air. “By now the air was very choppy and full of turbulence, making it unsafe to fly, so I landed immediately.” “My understanding of the event was that the couple were flying in close proximity to each other. Then the conditions changed and they started losing height. “Normally this is not an issue, but in this case the pilot decided to top-land in order to get to his car and retrieve his partner, who was by now on her way to the bottom. “It was a gentlemanly gesture but executed in the wrong place at an unfamiliar site,” said Pope.

Two libraries scoop provincial awards Not one, but two libraries in the Overstrand have won major awards from the Provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. At the annual award ceremony held at the Baxter Theatre on Monday 9 February, Hawston Library walked off as winner in the category Best Public Library: Youth Service, and also bagged the Minister’s special award for outstanding achievement in the arts and culture, language, heritage, geographical names, museums, libraries or archives category intended for the youth. The Hermanus Library was crowned as Best Big Public Library of the Year. With a membership of 8000, Hermanus Library is the largest of the eight public libraries in the Overstrand. A big public library is one that has nine staff members or more. In the criteria for the nomination, the DCAS, states: “The department wants to give recognition to a big public library which has demonstrated excellence in marketing, promotion and outreach activities and whose efforts have made a difference to a community in the Western Cape.” The Hermanus Library was described as being “Actively engaged in communitybuilding by raising funds and donating books to deserving institutions in the area that it serves”. Belinda May, who has been head librarian at the Hawston Library for the last 14 years, says winning the awards means that their hard work has been acknowledged. “It has been worthwhile doing the extra projects for the community. The staff initiate projects to encourage young people to read, and May is particularly passionate about developing the preschool reading programme. She says: “I am not bound by my job description. I want to see my community grow and empower themselves.” Alet Kotze, who has been head librarian at the Hermanus Library for 27 years, says:

“It’s an honour to be recognised as the best library and to have won this prestigious award.” She says it was the hard work and dedication of all the staff, the contribution made by the Friends of the Library and the public, that made the difference. The donations of books they receive from the Friends and the public, means they can build their own stock. At a council meeting on Thursday 26 February, Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie congratulated both libraries and accepted the awards on behalf of the municipality.

Revamp will make Lemm’s Corner a ‘friendly space’ KERRY VAN RENSBURG The launch of the new water feature and stone herb garden at Lemm’s Corner on Friday 27 February, signified the completion of the first phase of the planned revamp. Edmund Bucchianeri, chairperson of the Old Harbour Museum’s Board of Trustees, said the Old Harbour Museum (OHM) paid for most of the revamp costs so far. This was possible because the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport provided a more generous subsidy and thus there was some of the other income available for the upgrading. Elizabeth du Toit, manager of the OHM says the board of trustees decided to build the water feature. “Peter Jansen, with assistance of the two other maintenance staff and the EPWP maintenance students, built the water feature. Meindert Jonge Poerink from Fynbos Gardens contributed the water pump, some water plants, advice on the project and obtained sponsorships for trees,” explains Du Toit. Anton and Nicole Verhoogt organised and paid for the poles of the pergola, the grid in the water feature, the compost in the stone garden, and they provided and planted everything in the new garden and are maintaining it and will harvest the produce.

They also added some plants and fish to the water. Du Toit adds that the tree at the water feature was saved when the old library was demolished, and transplanted on the museum’s property. The olive trees around the edges were planted by the museum during the last upgrading. Architect Nicolette Lloyd talked guests through the proposal for the revamp, which includes the planting of trees, the placing of memory benches, bins, lights and kiosks. Lloyd says Lemm’s Corner represents a public-private partnership, because although the Fisherman’s Village is privately owned by the OHM, the community has a sense of ownership of the area. ”Inertia can creep in when there are too many voices and vested interests. Lots of voices and no money, is a bad combina-

Three attacks on tourists JANINE VD RIETNEETHLING

A couple from the UK was attacked and robbed in West cliff. Janet Wilkinson’s wrist needed surgery. PHOTOS:

Three attacks on tourists recently have led to concern among residents and tourism role players. The latest attack and robbery on a couple from the United Kingdom happened in Westcliff near Marine Drive on Tuesday 24 February at around 22:00. Janet and Dick Wilkinson have been visiting Hermanus for the past eight years. After their first visit they bought a holiday home in Westcliff. On the night of the attack, they were walking home celebrating a 50th birthday party of a friend at a restaurant in the CBD. Because they always feel safe, with enough street lights on at night, and perfect weather, they decided to walk to the restaurant and back home. “We were close to our home when a man appeared out of nowhere. He did not say a word, he just started hitting us with something like a steel pipe. With his first swing, he hit me on my forehead and blood started streaming down my face. I couldn’t see anything. More hits with the steel item followed and I fell to the ground,” Dick Wilkinson said. He was very concerned for his wife, as he could not see her through all the blood. They said the suspect was just raging out of control. “He hit us numerous times, and then only demanded my handbag!” He grabbed Janet’s handbag and ran away.

JANINE VD RIETNEETHLING

Janet realised her wrist was injured, but the couple managed to walk home where they immediately pressed the panic button. ADT, the police and an ambulance arrived shortly after and they were taken to hospital. Dick received stitches for his head and neck wounds. Janet had to undergo surgery to her wrist as the bones were shattered. She says what is adding insult to injury is that their medical bills will be very costly, while her stolen handbag only contained about R350, her cell phone and credit cards, which they immediately cancelled after the attack. ) In another attack, a couple from Switzerland was walking near Swallow Park on 21 February at around 21:30. The couple was attacked by a man who used pepper spray on the victims before running off with the woman’s handbag. A case of robbery and assault, with grievous bodily harm, was opened. The couple has since returned to Switzerland. ) On 6 February a 67-year-old German tourist was asleep in her

CCTV cameras should be top priority These attacks highlight the need for the planned CCTV cameras to be installed. Mary Faure, chairperson of the Hermanus Tourism Committee, says it must become a number one priority. According to Freddie Cronjé, chairperson of HPP, the CCTV installations will be implemented soon, but he couldn’t give an

exact timeline. During the first phase, 14 cameras will be erected on nine-metre poles, fitted with solar panels so that power failures will not have an effect on the 24-hour surveillance. HPP employees will monitor the cameras. This phase of the project will include 10 cameras in the CBD.

room at a guest house in Sandbaai. She woke up when she heard her bedroom door being forced open. According to lieutenant Fadila September from the Hermanus Police, the woman screamed and the suspect hit her with his fist in the face. Before running away he stole her Ipad. No arrests have been made in any of these cases. Mary Faure, chairperson of the Hermanus Tourism Committee says the attacks are shocking. She went to visit one of the victims in hospital and took flowers as a gesture of goodwill. “It is terrible. Tourists are very vulnerable, and we need to make a plan urgently. All the role players, including HPP, SAPS, the ratepayers, the Overstrand Municipality, tourism and the cliff path management must get together and find a lasting solution.” Faure says as far as she knows, most guest houses inform visitors of the possible dangers, especially at night. “These attacks are unacceptable. We don’t want to be known as a dangerous town! The criminals must not get the upper hand. “They must be found and brought to justice.”

Burglar steals valuables while owners work in garden A couple from Cape Town was robbed of valuable belongings in their holiday home in Onrus on Friday during broad daylight. The man and his wife were both working in the garden, not realising that most of their valuables were being stolen a few metres away from them in their home in Disa Street. It was only later, when they went

back into the house, that they realised they had been robbed. The couple immediately phoned the Hermanus Police, and later contacted the Hermanus Times, with the hope that some of the items stolen might be identified by residents reading the article on Facebook and the website. Items stolen include a white and yellow diamond ring with five diamonds

surrounded by diamond chips and a clasp at the back, a Fossil watch, a Nomination bracelet, a Nokia cell phone, a white handbag with grey trimmings, driver’s licence, credit and debit cards and an ID book – starting with the numbers 440511.

‘Copper dropper’ project for businesses in support of animals JANINE VD RIETNEETHLING The Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS), in conjunction with the Hermanus Times, are calling on everybody in Hermanus to become” copper droppers” in aid of the welfare society. Most people end up with copper coins in their purses which become heavy and virtually useless to them, but to HAWS it can very quickly add up to a large amount of money. HAWS’ aim is to collect two tons of copper coins within six months which could add up to R54 250. Local businesses can challenge each other in the various categories to see who can collect the most copper coins. After six months, a function will be held to hand over certificates of achievement to the winners in the different business categories. Large retailers participating in the project will be provided with a large collection bin, while smaller businesses will receive a smaller collection holder. The Hermanus Times will report on the progress on a monthly basis, announcing the front runners. Any business can participate in the project, which demands no effort from them except to

GENEROUS GERMAN DONATION: The Hermanus Provincial Hospital received a big donation from a German couple on Mon day. Helmut and Anne Merensky have been visitors to Hermanus for the past 13 years. A German friend of the couple, who owns Optik Amberg, gave them 100 spectacle frames for children worth R50 000, which the Merenskys donated to matron Nikki Bouwer (standing in the middle) of Herma nus Hospital. The couple also donated R6 000 on behalf of their German sponsor, Optik Amberg, for Bouwer to use in the hospital.

tional markets and 58,8% from domestic markets. A strong tourism image, a good experience and the variety of tourism experiences are key, as a large share of visitors indicated word of mouth (19,4%) and return visits (12,6%) as their top information source for the region.

new venue. Art Circle members called on the community and “city fathers” to help them find a new gallery when their temporary arrangement at the Village Square loft area came to an end. Annette Solomon, secretary of the Hermanus Art Circle committee, says: “Unfortunately no good Samaritan came forward to help us.” Like all fairy tales though, their story has a happy ending and they have now moved to new premises, albeit temporarily again. The big move took place last week when they vacated one space and moved into what used to be the sportswear shop at the Pick n Pay centre on Tuesday, 24 February. By Wednesday, they were open for business. The new gallery has an entrance on Long Street as well as one that opens towards the Pick n Pay parking area. Annette says: “This is a good position for our gallery; light and spacious, with ample parking in the Pick n Pay parking area for our visitors. “Our new landlord has been very accommodating. We have found our good Samaritan after all!”

Tyre apron as a solution for the lagoon side of Grotto Beach The lagoon side of Grotto Beach has unfortunately changed into a rather unattractive sight, due to the building debris showing. But far worse, the embankment threatens to collapse on a stretch of approximately 160 m if no measures are taken in the near future – a situation which can’t leave an engineer pondering about a solution. My proposal: 1. Ask the public (Radio Whalecoast, Hermanus Times, etc.) and companies to collect old car tyres for the project and store them on a suitable municipal ground. A total of approximately 1 260 tyres are required. 2. Load and shovel a layer of beach sand onto the embankment so that the building debris is well covered. 3. The embankment is then covered by an apron of tyres, as shown in the attached Fig. 1. The tyres are held, one to each other, by a loop of fence wire, the upper tyre tier being held by a steel wire secured to concrete blocks – possibly those presently on

Tyre Apron Fig. 1. the site could be used. To avoid too much strain on the steel wire, the total length of approximately 125 m should be divided into four independent sections. 4. Costs. As the material is cheap and unskilled workers can be employed for the major work, the project will not stress the municipal budget all too heavily. 5. Aesthetics. As with all changes, there will be people objecting to the artificial structure. But are there affordable alterna-

tives? In the beginning, looking from the beach side, one would see a neat tyre wall. In the course of time, tyres will be filled with sand blown in by the wind and to a small extent washed in by the sea. Some plants might spread in the gaps. With some luck the wind will one day cover the structure completely with sand. But this definitely requires the lagoon to breach well in the east into the ocean in the future. HELMUT MERENSKY

) I went to buy a licence on 18 January. I was in the queue for almost an hour. Only one cash ier on duty. Some people, in cluding me, were close to hav ing a seizure. ) I think its a great idea for the Sandbaai community to stand together against crime but not all have internet access so is it not possible to use the cell phone instead. Also what is the num ber to join neighbourhood watch and the tariff? – MRS MITCHELL No fees to join neighbourhood watch, donations only. For more info call Chris Nieuwoudt: 073 238 3811. ) I agree with readers, how dare someone comment poorly about another business. Rather say ‘Thanks for making us rich’. Book cottage, keep up the good work! – BRIDGET ) Re absence of trees: there are many areas that could do with some greenery and colour in Hermanus but why does it need to be landscaped and irrigated? Doesn’t bougainvillea thrive on neglect? It grows wild in Europe and makes a spectacular, col ourful show. – S ROMBURGH ) Shoppers, be aware when you purchase anything that should be fresh from a super market in town. Bought pork roast, got home to do lunch, it was rotten, got money back, that was not the point. Please su permarket butchery check your meat! – ELEANOR

) Ek het Saterdag ’n potjie in

gelegde kwepersnye by ’n ba saar gekoop. – ALTA ) Huff Puff, taking revenge is like taking poison and waiting for the other to die.. ) Can’t Hermanus get one of those outdoor gyms like in Cape Town and Soweto. Specifically next to the road at Mount Pleas ant, Hawston and Grotto and Onrus beaches? It’s then free to be fit and a great way to get people moving. – NENE ) Please NSRI, you are losing sales. I have had visitors twice who wanted Hermanus tshirts. You never have correct sizes and the red and orange were so popular. ) Onrusmark Sat. 7 Maart, De Wetsaal, Roosstr. Onrusrivier van 9 12. – SISKA CONRA DIE ) Thank you Ruben and Johans at Mainstreet Computers. My old laptop loves you! – JEAN ETTE ) Janine you looked lovely on your special day. Marinus and Nicole (whom I know) looked so cute. I wish you so much happi ness. ) Would anyone know if the Banting diet would work on a somewhat porky middle aged dog?

Pieter nooi diegene wat be-

Warm weather can be expected for the coming weekend with temperatures reaching a high of 24 degrees. Some clouds are expected on Saturday.

L2L ladies receive bags of goodies KERRY VAN RENSBURG The 10th Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse charity walk gets underway on 12 March, with the end point being Grotto beach four days later on Sunday 15 March. A total of 80 ladies will take on the 100 km coastal walk from Agulhas lighthouse to Danger Point lighthouse. The L2L ladies met at the United Church on Tuesday 24 February so

the sponsors could hand over their items for the 2015 walk. Ryno Viljoen, a director of Cashkows.com, handed over T-shirts to L2L veteran Les Clark. The large all-purpose branded luggage bags sponsored by Hermanus Toyota, are the only bags, besides their day packs, the ladies may use and everything they require for their four day adventure, must be packed into this bag. A challenge in itself. Various shops and res-

Important information regarding luggage, departure times, procedure on arrival at L’Agulhas, and how to take good care of their feet were discussed at the meeting. This year the funds raised from the big walk will go towards the Hermanus Night Shelter Association’s building fund and the Overberg Wheelchair Association.

The Whaling Station at Stony Point in Bet ty’s Bay.

Our heritage under the spotlight at next U3A open meeting Our Overstrand and Hermanus Heritage is the topic for the U3A: Overberg open meeting at the Overstrand Auditorium on Thursday 12 March. The talk, scheduled for 17:30, will be presented by Dr Robin Lee. Lee says: “Almost all human communities have a heritage that explains why the community exists in the form it does and directs attention to ways in which it can develop in the future. “And the more the members of the community understand about the heritage, the more they will appreciate why things are as they are and the better they can participate in shaping the future.” His illustrated presentation focusses on three localities: the Whaling Station at Stony Point in Betty’s Bay; Hoy’s Koppie in Hermanus: and the Klein River Farm on which Stanford is built. In each case, the personalities and events involved are explained and illustrated, many by images never seen in public before. Members and visitors: R10

No action at new gallery KERRY VAN RENSBURG Snowy has gone from the front door and “to let” signs have replaced the paintings at Petrus Viljoen’s art gallery, Art 2 Action, in High Street. The Hermanus Times conducted an interview with Viljoen in his gallery at the end of January, and by the time the article was published a month later (HT 26/02), the gallery had since closed. Leon Muller, an established artist who has his gallery, Art Thirst, in High Street, says Viljoen did spend seven years with him as an apprentice artist, before going it alone. But he says the number of paintings Petrus says he sold (250 small block paintings in his first month with Muller, and up to 64 a day), was exaggerated. Muller reserves comment on what may have been Viljoen’s undoing, and agrees that, besides talent, it takes discipline and hard work to fill the empty spaces on the walls of a gallery. Despite numerous attempts to contact Viljoen for comment, none was received at time of going to print.

Since he followed the three ladies’ advice, Ian has not stopped entertaining. “My special brand is a mix of music and comedy,” says Ian. “I believe that a musical show should be like a small holiday – you should leave the show feeling that you have forgotten all the drab annoying stuff for the length of the evening, recharged and transported. “Andit has to be worth leaving the TV and the

house for.” Ian’s love for music started when he was 2 years old, singing and copying songs – everything from the click song to opera. He startedformal piano lessons at age 8. His Cabaret Performance on 7 March at the municipal auditorium is a fundraiser for Camphill School. He will do highlights from his career, the best of Handful of Keys, Mr Bojangles, Fever, Hey Jude, and guarantees loads of laughs. Wines and elegant eats are included in the ticket price of R350 pp. They are available from: Alex Grant Pharmacy, Stewarts Pharmacy, Onrus Pharmacy, Wine Village and Camphill School.

Henriette Bulani, a health profession counsellor from Zwelihle, organised and hosted this special event at the Community Centre. The special event was free of charge. During different sessions, about 30 ladies were treated to a foot massage. They then chose their own colour nail polish for their toenails. Hands were also rubbed and nails painted. Nadia Jackson, Anel Prins and Lize van der Walt were some of the volunteers who helped with the pampering sessions. Kim Tucker, a health care professional

and personal trainer, did a weight assessment and educated the women on nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle. Hananja Boshoff, a dietician lecturer at the Stellenbosch University, also held a talk on nutrition. Lydia De Vries from Zumba then increased everybody’s heart rate with a short session of zumba fitness dancing. The ladies were then treated to a healthy lunch. Bulani thanks Woolworths who sponsored 33 vouchers for facials, beautiful flowers and snacks. She would also like to thank Vintage Love, Fruit&Veg, OK (Voëlklip), Eastcliff Spar, Function Hire, Proactive Gym, Oasis Water, The Purple Shop and Every Nation Church for being so generous.

Spar women’s bowling tournament attracts 28 teams A befitting message to strengthen the soul was delivered by Michiel de Kock, Onrust Dutch Reformed Church minister, at the opening of the Gateway Spar women’s bowling tournament played at the Hermanus Bowling Club on 26 and 27 February. Various Hermanus teams secured first four positions on the leader board over the first day’s play, but fell by the wayside after the third game. A Worcester team, however, skipped by Denny Smithies, started off well on day two by beating their opponents in the first game.

Football trials for boys Salim United, based in Mount Pleasant, will be having football trials for boys u. 11, 13 and 15 on Saturday 14 March at the Mount Pleasant Sports Complex. The trials will run from 9:00 until 12:00. All interested football enthusiasts should bring along their own boots, socks, shin guards and shorts. Carrying the good play over the last two games, they ended up top of the score list. All 28 teams that participated exhibited brilliant bowling and many a team went down by a shot difference of only one or two. The Hermanus team, skipped by Marie Nel, was luckiest of all, picking up an eight-bowl score, earning each of the four players an insurance gift prize. A second team from Worcester, skipped by Gladys Bradley, finished in second place. The third position was won by a Hermanus team skipped by Tish Bryce. CHRISSIE VAN WYK

Shocker for DOGSbody Hermanus - Individual Stableford (Log) / 4BBB: Sometimes even a short report like this can be very hard to write, often because of the opening sentiment. Dogsbody had a nightmare! Ok that’s out of the way. It was a dream performance though from The Star of David, hot and sizzling to match the weather and shattering Dougal MacRoss’s dream by just one point. More of a vision than a dream was The Jolly Green Giant’s new pink number. He may have to change his name. Pat of the Bushveld thought he was dreamingwhenheavoidedthehatbut
