New Greater Texas Lodge will be virtual SAN ANTONIO – In an effort to grow membership throughout all of Texas and to provide a wider outreach of community service, Hermann Sons Life has created the first virtual lodge, the Greater Texas Lodge. Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly explained there are several lodges that are currently inactive but still have membership. Many of these lodges are in remote areas and since there are no other lodges nearby, merging into another lodge is not an option. Some of these locations include El Paso, Lubbock, Del Rio and Amarillo. “We are excited about the Greater Texas Lodge! By having a virtual lodge option, we are better able to serve all of Texas and provide support and community service efforts in underrepresented areas,” President and CEO Robin Czarnek
said. “When COVID hit in 2020, many members were not able to attend lodge meetings in person and some areas don’t have a lodge nearby, so we recognized the need for a virtual option. And with so many members having busy schedules, the virtual lodge option will better fit into their schedules.”
Cecily said when meetings stopped due to the pandemic, some lodges successfully continued meeting virtually. “We saw there was a way for members to connect even when miles apart – they can still interact and serve their communities,” she said. The Greater Texas Lodge is
open to any interested member and will be based out of the Home Office in San Antonio. Dues will be $1. Its primary focus will be community service projects. The first meeting will include the election of officers, schedule and community service planning. “Hermann Sons Life’s mission is to ‘strengthen community through financial protection and service’,” Cecily said. “By creating this virtual lodge, we now have an opportunity to provide just that in these unserved communities.” Connection details for the January virtual meeting will be provided closer to the meeting date. For more information or for questions, call Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly at 210-226-9261, ext. 257 or Leonni Avalos at ext. 238.

It's the time of year to count our blessings By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO It’s hard to believe that the holidays are around the corner and 2023 is almost over . It’s been a tough year for many with high inflation, COVID surging again and the uncertainty in the world . Despite these challenges, I cannot help but feel blessed to be an American and be able to celebrate this great nation and our great organization as well . Thanksgiving has always been a wonderful time for me to reflect on the things I am thankful for… faith, family, friends and so many more blessings in my life that I often take for granted . It’s good
to be able to take a moment to appreciate these blessings and doing so can certainly make the holiday more meaningful . However you choose to spend your time, I hope you’ll be able to feel gratitude for your blessings and be able to share them with others . Nothing fills your cup more than being able to give back to your community and there are more opportunities than ever . I am looking forward to hearing about your Make a Difference Day service projects and their impact in the community . It is beautiful to see the fraternal spirit alive and well at HSL and
We wish you hope, joy, peace, good health and love this Thanksgiving Day!

it’s because of the work YOU do in serving your community and representing HSL as you do . No doubt, your kindness and good deeds help spread the word about HSL and the great things happening here . It’s encouraging to think about the Wampanoag Indians and pilgrims gathered to celebrate a bountiful harvest after a season of sickness and scarcity and a past of religious persecution . While some seasons in our lives may not be plentiful, the message of that first Thanksgiving is a great reminder that there is always hope in the struggle and the seasons of scarcity and diffi-

Ronald McDonald House provides home away from home SAN ANTONIO – Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio provides a safe and caring home away from home for the families of children receiving essential medical services. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) corporation that creates, finds, and supports programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children and their families. RMHC programs help families with ill or injured children stay together near leading hospitals and health care services worldwide, ensuring they have access to the medical care their child needs while fully supported and actively involved in their child’s
care. “We believe that families are stronger when they are together, and this is never more important than when a child is sick or injured. When a family is focused on the health of their child, nothing else should matter – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night.” There are several ways to donate and volunteer. The website
includes an Amazon wish list for residents at the house. Other ways to help include a Meals from the Heart program – the goal is to provide a warm meal every night for the families. Volunteers can provide a meal on site, cater or sponsor a meal or donate frozen meals. Volunteers are needed to cook or cater meals, for general cleaning and organizing around the house, event support, day projects such as landscaping, hosting holiday parties and activities for families, administrative duties and outreach. Ways to help from home include toiletry kits with travelsized items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant,

According to the website, in the 1970s, Mike Malone was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and his family was forced to take frequent trips to San Antonio for long treatment stays. That’s when he witnessed first-hand the difficulties that come along with receiving medical services in a city where you had no home. Mike made it his mission to find a place for families that could be
a home away from home, a way to lessen the day-to-day problems that his family suffered while he received treatment. Unfortunately, Mike’s journey was cut short, but his mother and the San Antonio community joined together to keep his vision alive and broke ground on the first Ronald McDonald House in 1983. Today, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of San Antonio serves 4,600 seriously ill children and their family members every year. For more information, visit www.rmhcsanantonio.org. Medicare open enrollment under way through Dec. 7 By TERESA SAATHOFF Vice President of Sales A lot of good things have been happening in the Hermann Sons Life Sales Department this fall. We had three awesome presenters at our annual Continuing Education Weekend for our agents held in late September. Cari Marin, senior accountant from the Home Office taught four hours on annuities; John Moore, one of our agents, taught three hours on Medicare and Minerva Flores with New York Life, taught three hours on ethics and two hours on Insurance. In addition to the required
Continuing Education classes, we did a three-hour workshop to cover all things related to various life insurance products and applications. We wrapped up each evening with dinner and team building games. We are excited several of our agents are now certified to sell Medicare and are ready to help our members with questions about their existing Medicare plans as well as members who are new to Medicare. If you were not able to make it to our educational Medicare events held recently held at the Home Office, New Braunfels
Lodge or the Retirement Home in Comfort, our agents are available to assist you year-round. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period occurs each year from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 and gives you the chance to review and make changes to your current Medicare coverage – such as cost, coverage, providers and prescription coverage to better meet your needs for 2024. We look forward to helping our senior members with their life insurance, annuities and Medicare needs. Please let us know if your lodge would like one of our Medicare agents to
do a presentation. Speaking of annuities, did you know that Hermann Sons Life is now paying 5 percent interest on all new annuities with a 2 percent guarantee? It is hard to believe we are already in the fourth quarter of 2023. The Sales Department needs you to help us finish the year strong. If you or someone you know wants to review their existing life insurance coverage or purchase life insurance or an annuity, please contact us. It is a busy time of the year, so if you prefer to do everything electronically, we can make
that happen, but of course, our agents are also always happy to meet with you in person. I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you spend the day with family and friends, that you eat too much turkey and pie and that you have the Dallas Cowboy football game playing in the background. The day after Thanksgiving, when you are deciding who has the best Black Friday sales and what to buy everyone for Christmas, please think about the value and protection that the gift of life insurance can provide for your own family and loved ones.

Sales Comparing Medicare Advantage Plans vs. Medicare Supplement Plans By LIZETTE A. KOWALSKI Senior Health Advisor As older Americans approach the age of 65, they are faced with an important decision regarding their healthcare coverage: Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans. These two options are designed to complement Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), but they have distinct differences that can significantly impact a senior’s healthcare experience. In this article, we will compare Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Supplement Plans, highlighting their key features and helping older Americans make informed choices. Medicare Advantage Plans Medicare Advantage Plans, often referred to as Part C, are private health insurance alternatives to Original Medicare. They are offered by private insurance companies and are regulated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). These plans bundle Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) coverage, and many also include Part D (prescription drug coverage) under a single plan. Here are some key features of Medicare Advantage Plans: Cost: Medicare Advantage
Plans typically have lower monthly premiums than Medicare Supplement Plans, making them a cost-effective option for seniors on a budget. Additional Benefits: Many Medicare Advantage Plans offer additional benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, and wellness programs, which are not covered by Original Medicare. Networks: These plans often require you to use a network of healthcare providers, limiting your choice of doctors and hospitals. However, some plans allow out-of-network care at a higher cost. Out-of-Pocket Costs: Medicare Advantage Plans have annual out-of-pocket maximums, which provide financial protection for seniors, limiting their expenses in a given year. Prescription Drug Coverage: Most Medicare Advantage Plans include prescription drug coverage, but the formulary may vary, so it’s important to ensure your medications are covered. Medicare Supplement Plans Medicare Supplement Plans, or Medigap, are policies sold by private insurance companies to fill the gaps in Original Medicare coverage. These plans are designed to 1. Com-
prehensive Coverage: Medigap plans offer a wide range of standardized coverage options, allowing you to choose the plan that best suits your healthcare needs. The most popular plans are Plan F and Plan G. 2. No Networks: With Medigap, you have the freedom to visit any healthcare provider that accepts Medicare, giving you more flexibility in choosing your doctors and specialists. 3. No Additional Benefits: Unlike Medicare Advantage Plans, Medigap does not typically offer extra benefits such as dental, vision, or prescription drug coverage. You will need to purchase a separate Part D plan for prescription drugs. 4. No Out-of-Pocket Maximum: Medigap plans do not have annual out-of-pocket maximums. While you may pay higher premiums, this can provide more predictability in healthcare costs. 5. No Part D Coverage: Medigap does not include prescription drug coverage, so you’ll need to purchase a separate Part D plan for your medications. Choosing the Right Plan Now that we have explored the key features of both Medicare Advantage Plans and
Medicare Supplement Plans, let’s discuss how older Americans can make the right choice for their healthcare needs. 1. Consider Your Budget: If you’re looking for a costeffective option with lower monthly premiums, Medicare Advantage may be the way to go. However, if you can afford higher premiums and want more predictability in out-ofpocket expenses, Medigap may be a better fit. 2. Health Needs: Think about your current health and any anticipated healthcare needs. If you have ongoing medical conditions and need a wide choice of healthcare providers, Medigap might be the better choice. However, if you’re relatively healthy and don’t mind using a network, Medicare Advantage can be a cost-effective option. 3. Prescription Drugs: If you take multiple medications, consider whether a Medicare Advantage Plan’s prescription drug coverage meets your needs. If not, you can add a standalone Part D plan with a Medigap policy. 4. Extra Benefits: If you value additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage, Medicare Advantage Plans often provide these options.
Medigap plans do not include such benefits, so you may need to purchase separate policies. Conclusion The choice between Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Supplement Plans is a crucial decision that can significantly impact your healthcare and financial well-being as an older American. Each option has its own advantages and drawbacks, so it’s essential to carefully evaluate your needs and budget before making a decision. Ultimately, the right choice depends on your individual circumstances and priorities. Some older Americans may prioritize lower monthly premiums and additional benefits, making Medicare Advantage Plans the ideal choice. Others may prefer the flexibility, wider choice of doctors, and predictable out-of-pocket expenses offered by Medicare Supplement Plans. Regardless of your decision, it’s crucial to take the time to compare available plans, consult with insurance professionals, and consider your health and financial needs carefully. By making an informed choice, you can enjoy peace of mind and quality healthcare coverage as you age gracefully.

Howie’s Happenings Howie loves tug-of-war By Robin Czarnek President and CEO Howie and Beau continue to surprise us with how big they’re getting, Beau especially! Beau turns one on Dec. 7 and he towers over Howie already! They play non-stop and have brought Krypto into the mix. Howie loves playing tug-of-war with Krypto, but Howie prefers to play it laying down and lets Krypto drag him around. It’s fun to watch! The boys have all gone a little crazy with the cooler weather and the rain. They are absolutely loving the weather and playing in the mud too! Howie and Beau wanted to introduce you to their friend, Bryce. He is such a sweet boy and loves belly rubs and was such a good sport with his costume! Be sure to check out the Facebook page
to take a look at all the adorable pups in their costumes!! If you’re looking for a new addition to the family, Bryce is such a precious boy, and he is so ready to find his furever home. Bryce is just one of the many adorable pups of all kinds located at Heart of Texas SPCA/ HOT K9 Rescue. If you’re interested in meeting Bryce or any of the pups at HOTK9 or for more information, please email: hotk9rescue@ yahoo.com to schedule a time to meet them. For more information and to view all of the amazing dogs available for adoption, please check out Heart of Texas SPCA / HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook or at www.heartoftexasspca.com. Keep in mind that Heart of Texas SPCA/HOT K9 Rescue is a volunteer run organization, so email is best.
Above, Krypto, back, and Howie play tug-of-war. Howie has a rather lazy approach. Below, Beau strikes a pose with Howie!

Purse Bingo fund-raiser supports Grief Camp session Cont’d from Pg. 1 The fund-raiser was organized by Cecily and her staff, Member Benefits representatives Leonni Avalos and Tammi Sutherland. “The event’s success was the result of months of hard work, planning and dedication by our Member Benefits staff – Cecily, Leonni and Tammi. So many other staff and family members helped pull this off too,” Robin said. “Executive Assistant Katie Via, Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett, Communications Director Elaine Soto and Assistant Communications Director Hannah Ruiz-Gruver all spent a great deal of time and hard work to spread the word
about the Purse Bingo and make sure the players’ needs were taken care of. “To see our team all working together and have the event run so smoothly was a testament to their dedication and love for Hermann Sons Life. I would be remiss in not mentioning our awesome sponsors, members and of course, our bingo players! We are grateful to every one of you!” Robin said. “Leonni worked for weeks, pounding the pavement securing donations from purses to monetary donations, table sponsorships, raffle and silent auction prizes,” Cecily said. “Tammi helped set-up, decorated and prepared the meal. We had many others

pitch in – we extend our appreciation to all of them. I also must thank Robin for all her support and hard work helping plan, seek donations and working so hard throughout the event wherever help was needed. It was a group effort to pull this event off and I’m just so grateful.” The bingo was held in the upstairs ballroom at the San Antonio Home Office. Participants were treated to snacks, desserts and drinks. Lunch included a taco and chalupa bar served before the exciting play began. A silent auction was also included. Serving for his first time as bingo caller was John Kelly, Cecily’s husband. Dave Czarnek, Robin’s
husband, served as parking attendant. Ian headed up the beverages table and manning the check-in table were Cecily, Leonni, Tammi and Katie. The Hermann Sons Life Grief Support Session is held at the Camp facilities in Comfort. Each summer a special half-week session is held exclusively for children ages 8-17 who are grieving the loss of a close loved one. During the session, the campers work with licensed therapists. Fund-raisers such as the bingo and donations make it possible to offer the camp at no cost. In 2023, Hermann Sons Life held a special spring break camp in partnership with the Bluebon-
Healing Hearts Purse Bingo workers included, from left, Dave Czarnek, Member Benefits representatives Tammi Sutherland and Leonni Avalos, Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett and Executive Administrative Assistant Katie Via. Dave helped with parking, Tammi, Leonni and Katie worked the sign-in table and Ian served drinks.
net Advocacy Center for the children of Uvalde. Anyone can donate to the Camp throughout the year at the website store at hermannsonslife. org. Camp News
Camp 2024 will offer new 10-night, 11-day stay By IAN BRASSETT Executive Camp Director COMFORT – Hermann Sons Life Camp is excited to offer a brandnew summer camp experience for our junior members. Based on the parental survey results, it seems y’all are looking forward to this session. This upcoming summer camp will include a 10-night, 11-day summer camp program from June 23, 2024, to July 3, 2024. This coed program will be held at Hilltop Camp with a limited enrollment of 90 female and 64 male campers. The extended Camp will have the same look and feel – the same vibe that currently exists at Camp and the same daily ebbs and flows. The campers will eat with the other campers from their dorm which is no different than the one-week session. Each camper will get to go to the camp store once during their stay with us. We’ll have the same great counselors in the dorms and senior staff that will be working closely with the campers. We’re excited that the campers will have even longer to forge the bonds of friendships that are so evident within our camps. What’s different? Campers will get more choice and freedom when it comes to selecting their activities just like our campers do now. Parents, however, will not be involved in the selection process. The first two days of the 10-day program will be pre-selected activities including team building and group dynamic programs. Campers will travel with their dorm on Monday and Tuesday in a structured program with their counselors from activity to activity. These activities will include (amongst other activities) challenge course (high ropes, zip lines, giant swing, climbing) kayaking and canoeing, archery, free swim, crafts and sports. At lunch on the first Tuesday, campers will select the activities they wish to do on Wednesday,
Camp 2024 schedule
Thursday and Saturday (individually). This schedule will be reminiscent of the selection process currently done with the parents at home where campers select their top six activities. At brunch on Saturday, the campers will have another opportunity to select new activities (or the same) for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Campers will still get to choose their electives daily from a rotating selection of activities. It’s a win, win, win! Evening activities and special events Much of the activities that make camp special will be retained in the 10-night program. Game night, dance, bragging rights, capture the flag and rotations. These activities will be supplemented by new, fun nightly activities like a pool party, karaoke, dorm-based skits and more. We’ll make sure that campers have time to decompress over the weekend with a sleep in and brunch on Saturday along with a fun new special event, a water carnival. Sunday – Campfire
Monday – Bunk skit night (Grab Bag skits). Tuesday – Game night (with the girl’s camp). Wednesday – Talent show / karaoke/free swim. Thursday – Dance (with the girl’s camp). Friday – Bragging Rights (with the girl’s camp), capture the flag / free swim Saturday – Pool party ** Late day ** brunch with cartoons ** water carnival ** Sunday - Campfire / free swim. Monday – MTV Night (dorm activity) Tuesday – Closing ceremonies. Facility update We’ve had a busy fall preparing for summer camp 2024, especially at Riverside. While it may not seem too “flashy,” we’re excited about the 15 inches of insulation added to Biebers. Having brand new insulation will help keep the dorms cool in the increasingly hot summer months. In addition to the insulation, we’ve added new gutters to both the Riverside and Hilltop sites. We’re also very excited about the new, cool pictures featured at Riverside dining hall. They
look fantastic. I think the girls will really like how the dining hall is looking. Staffing update It’s been busy planning for next summer. I’ve interviewed over 40 CIT-1s, and reservations for next summer’s CITs have already begun with Session 5 being 50 percent reserved. It’s fantastic to see this amount of interest in the program. There’s still time for CIT-aged campers to send in their applications and to interview. Staffing for junior counselors, counselors and senior staff has already begun and a bunch of your favorite staff members have already signed up to return including Nimbus, Megatron,
AppleJax, Spam, Twitch, S.I.P., Mello, Froggy Princess, Squiggle, 9 to 5, UFO, Wipeout, Hubcap, Shankley, Panic, Big Wig, Shepard, Coconut, Machine, Astro, Tetris, Ketchum, Dart, Sonar, Kenobi, Deluna and so many more are already scheduled to return. Wow! I’ll keep you informed as we get closer to the summer months.
