The program is offered at a discount to our members (policyholders) and is also open to non-members.
The dance program is available to youth 3 to 17 years of age as of Sept. 1, 2025.
Students may enroll in any one of the dance schools they choose.
Dance school locations and registration instructions are being mailed out to eligible Hermann Sons Life members, and school of dance enrollment for non-members will be advertised in the communities where dance schools are located. Dance registration is available online at hermannsonslife.org.
registration. Non-members will be charged the same monthly tuition; however, they will also be charged a $200 registration fee.
Dance tuition and registration fees help each dance class pay for expenses during the year and the Home Office cost for teacher salaries and any other expenses that are incurred. Each teacher is an employee of Hermann Sons Life. The teacher(s) and at least two parent volunteers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school.
Tuition is $38 per month for nine months or a full payment of $342 may be paid at time of
The dance schools are designed to teach the art of dance in a wholesome atmosphere of fun, work, physical exercise and fellowship.
The deadline to register is Oct. 1. In most instances, the dance season follows the school calendar.
SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life announces the formation of the HSL Youth Foundation Inc. that incorporates the camp, dance and scholarships programs.
The HSL Youth Foundation Inc. is a designated 501(3)(c) organization. A 501(c)(3) is a recognized nonprofit organization that receives federal tax exemption and donors can deduct contributions. These junior member benefit programs will continue as usual with changes only to business operations.
Due to this classification, the foundation can now participate in grant funding programs and accept tax-deductible donations from corporations, businesses and individuals.
“The foundation now makes grants and charitable donations accessible in ways never before possible,” President and CEO Robin Czarnek said. “This will make more improvements possible and better provide for sustainable growth.”
“It is a seamless change for the dance, camp and scholarship programs. The mission to provide quality, cost-effective and fun programs for the youth remains steadfast,” Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly said. “We are excited to be able to seek grant funding for the betterment of these programs. I am already taking classes on grant writing and asking for assistance from experienced grant writers.”

As you probably saw in the June edition of the newspaper, Hermann Sons Life held a joint committee meeting that included our Board of Directors and all standing committees. Our goal was to share with our members the progress being made at HSL and our goals for the future.
While change is never easy and often painful, it’s wonderful to see how you’ve embraced it and even risen to the occasion with your support, ideas and hard work. Through the hard work and dedication of our staff and Board of Directors, I am proud to say we’re making bold strides into the future. With the changes implemented, we are seeing major improvement in the bottom line and thus, building a strong Hermann Sons Life for all!
Our committee members were able to witness some of the improvements firsthand with a tour of Hilltop Camp, the retirement home and the new facility the residents are in.
At the heart of our commitment to strengthen community is the formation of the HSL Youth Foundation, Inc, a 501(c) (3)non-profit organization created to further support our
youth programs. Through this foundation, Hermann Sons Life is reinforcing our mission to provide life-changing experiences for young people through our camp, dance and scholarship programs. The foundation now makes grants and charitable donations accessible in ways never before possible. These additional fund opportunities open doors for more improvements and sustainable growth for legacy programs like our camp and schools of dance and help for our future leaders through scholarships. We don’t just want our programs to survive – we want them to continue to grow, thrive and shape our leaders of tomorrow. The foundation provides the tools needed to do just that.
HSL has secured property tax abatement for our downtown property. This has been years in the making, but we were thrilled to see this happen as it will strengthen our organization’s long-term outlook, allowing more resources to be directed to community support and program development.
Another key initiative this year is the rollout of HSL’s Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuity (MYGA) product. The MYGA offers safety and security with guaranteed
interest rates for the duration of the annuity and reflects HSL’s commitment to providing more modern, competitive financial products for our members while supporting and maintaining our fraternal roots.
We are committed to improving your experience with our technology as well. A launch of our new e-application later this year will streamline our application process considerably for both our members and our agents alike. The first phase of the e-application will be focused
on our annuity products, with life insurance products to follow. A conversion of our Policy Administration is underway as well. We are excited – this system will offer the long awaited and overdue access our members and agents have asked for. From a commitment to further develop our youth programs and new products and technology to improve the experience for our members, HSL is proving that a fraternal benefit society can honor its traditions while still embracing modernization.
Hermann Sons Life officers and staff participated in the annual Home Office Flag Day ceremony in observance of Flag Day on June 14.After the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and the pledge of allegiance, President and CEO Robin Czarnek read a proclamation from Gov. Greg Abbott commemorating Flag Day. Senior Programmer Analyst Rebecca Henley read a Flag Day poem. Home Office observes Flag Day

NEW BRAUNFELS –
Howie and Beau have had a busy month with many wildlife sightings recently. They’ve enjoyed a buck in our driveway, countless lizards, a few scorpions and numerous birds. They’re always sure to announce the wildlife to us so we don’t miss any of the surprises nature has to offer…spooky or otherwise.
Their (and our wildlife adventures have increased since our daughter gave us a Bird Buddy for a gift. The Bird Buddy is a birdhouse that holds birdseed and takes pictures and videos when the birds come for a visit. The boys were really hollering at the birds at first, but they’ve gotten used to it and are indifferent now. We enjoy the visitors and the awesome pictures we get. Howie had an unexpected trip to the vet due to a bad allergy attack. Poor Howie was excited to
take a ride to the vet – until we stepped inside. He put on the brakes at the door as soon as he realized what was happening. Vets are spooky to him. Thankfully, the staff quickly won him over with lots of snuggles and ear rubs and with some medicine he was back to himself 100%. Sadly, Howie was told he needs to lose a few pounds, same with Dave and I! We were told Howie was chunky. Dave now refers to the days he gets special treats as “cheat days.”
The boys have made several trips beyond the vet and have been very excited. Beau absolutely loses his mind when a ride is mentioned, or a harness comes out. He definitely enjoys outings! Howie, on the other hand, likes the outings, but is more mellow about it. They discovered a new favorite coffee place called Lucky Brew in New Braunfels. They get pup cups and lots of attention – so, of course, they’re
thrilled.
Howie and Beau wanted you to meet their new friends, Bean and Sprout. These adorable boys started their lives in an unfortunate hoarding situation but have rebounded quickly and are living life now. They would love to meet you and are ready for their “furever” homes. While this duo has a blast together, they can be separated. They love other dogs, big or small, have lots of energy but enjoy snuggling too. They are small and they’re not expected to be more than 25 pounds.
If you’re interested in meeting them or any of the other pups at HOTK9, please email: hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to schedule a visit. HOTK9 is a 501(c)(3) no-kill canine shelter. For more information or to view the amazing dogs available for adoption, visit: www.heartoftexasspca.com or find Heart of Texas SPCA/ HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook.

Having a strong financial plan includes more than just a savings account or investment portfolio. It should include life insurance, annuities and Medicare planning. Each plays a critical role in long-term security and peace of mind.
Life Insurance:
Life insurance is a financial tool that serves a purpose throughout your life. It ensures that your loved ones are financially taken care of if something happens to you. Life insurance can cover final expenses, eliminate debts and provide tax-free benefits to your beneficiaries.
As you grow older, your life insurance needs change. That is why reviewing your life insurance coverage annually – especially after major life events like retirement, marriage, divorce, or welcoming grandchildren –is key to making sure your coverage fits your stage of life.
Annuities:
As a retiree, you do not want to outlive the money you have saved. That is where annuities come in. An annuity is a financial product that turns a portion of your savings into a steady income stream and sometimes for the rest of your life. It can act as a buffer against market volatility and as a backup for other retirement income sources.
Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuities (MYGAs) offer fixed interest rates for a set term. MYGAs provide predictable guaranteed growth without market risk. For those nearing retirement or already retired, a MYGA can provide stability and certainty when other investments may be more volatile. If you are not sure how an annuity can fit into your plan, let
SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life introduces our new Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuity (MYGA) –a simple secure solution for individuals looking to grow their savings with guaranteed interest and zero market risk.
Our MYGA product is designed for those who want predictability and peace of mind. With just $5,000 minimum to open, individuals can start securing their financial future. We also offer flexibility for a larger initial deposit up to $1 million.
Sons Life Sales Team walk you through our MYGA options.
Medicare:
When it comes to healthcare in retirement, Medicare is a vital component. But Medicare is complex and sometimes confusing. From choosing between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage to understanding prescription drug coverage and supplemental plans, the choices you make can impact your health and finances for years.
Taking the time to review your Medicare plan annually, especially during the open enrollment period in the fall, to ensure you are not overpaying for coverage you do not need or missing out on benefits that could save you money.
Retirement Planning:
Retirement Planning requires reviews, adjustments and checkins along the way. If you are five years away from retirement or already enjoying your retirement, it is never too late or too early to review your plan. Call Hermann Sons Life today to review your life insurance, annuities and Medicare choices. Our Sales Team can help guide you on ways to protect your loved ones, preserve your income and enjoy the retirement you have worked so hard to build.
With our MYGA, the interest rate you earn is based on the term you select and the amount you invest – so you can tailor your growth to fit your financial goals.
The 3-year and 5-year both provide a fixed interest rate that is locked in for the duration of the contract, allowing your money to grow safely and steadily.
Whether you are nearing retirement or just looking for a stable way to diversify your savings, your MYGA can be a smart addition to your financial strategy.
For more information or to open a MYGA, contact the Sales Team at 210-527-9113.

COMFORT – Three Hermann Sons Life past campers were each awarded the 2025 Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship. The three recipients of the $1,000 scholarship are David Niemeier of Boerne, a member of Boerne Lodge; Karrigan Staats of New Braunfels, a member of New Braunfels Lodge; and Autumn Stuart of Adkins, a member of Cibolo Lodge.
The scholarship fund was created in memory of Shannon Leigh Gaffney, a former camper and counselor who passed away in 1998 at the age of 21 after losing her battle with leukemia. An annual golf tournament is held each spring to benefit the scholarship fund.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be a member in good standing and a past camper, complete an application and write an essay titled, “How being a Hermann Sons Life camper shaped the person I am today.” Below are excerpts from their essays.
Autumn Stuart
Growing up, I was fortunate enough to be part of a unique and enriching community through the Hermann Sons Life Camp. What began as a summer escape from the routine of daily life quickly turned into a formative experience that shaped my character, values, and perspective. The lessons I learned and the bonds I formed during my time at camp have played an essential role in making me the person I am today. Through this experience, I developed leadership skills, deepened my sense of community, and built resilience that I carry with me in all aspects of life.
One of the most significant ways being a Hermann Sons Life Camper helped shape me was by fostering leadership skills. Camp was a place where I had to learn how to step up, not only for myself but also for others. As a camper, I participated in group activities that often required collaboration and problem-solving. The experience taught me how to lead by example, commu-
nicate effectively, and encourage teamwork. Whether it was during a game of tug-of-war or working together on a craft project, I realized that leadership wasn’t about asserting control, but about bringing people together and ensuring everyone felt valued and heard. It taught me the importance of patience, understanding, and clear communication all qualities that are invaluable in every facet of life, from school to work to personal relationships.
Another way the Hermann Sons Life Camp shaped me was by instilling a sense of community and belonging. The camp’s core philosophy emphasized the importance of creating a tightknit, supportive environment where everyone felt like they were part of something bigger than themselves. I learned early on that community is not just about shared experiences, but also about mutual respect, empathy, and collective responsibility. Campers came from diverse backgrounds, yet we all shared the common goal of having fun, learning new things, and supporting each other. This atmosphere of camaraderie helped me understand the importance of fostering meaningful relationships and how to be a good friend, mentor, and supporter. The values of respect, inclusivity, and cooperation I learned at camp extended beyond the campgrounds and have influenced my interactions in the wider world. I’ve learned that a sense of community isn’t just built on proximity, but on shared values
and the genuine care we show for others.
Karrigan Staats
After my initial day of camp, complete with playing volleyball in the scorching sun and making friendship bracelets under the pavilion, I knew I would be back for many years to come. It was at this very camp, nestled in the heart of nature, that I discovered the courage to step out of my comfort zone and welcome new challenges. Little did I know, every one of these experiences would shape me into the adventurous and resilient person I am today. Over the years of my time at camp, the nerves slowly went away and the excitement heightened, yet the fear of hitting my head on the bunk bed above me never quite went away.
Every day at camp felt like a new opportunity to find out something about myself. Being away from home and in a new environment helped me grow by trying new activities. Having the ability to attend a variety of different classes a day allowed me to explore different interests, which allowed me to understand the activities that I truly enjoy.
My cabin members quickly became more than just friends, they turned into my sisters. We shared countless memories, supported each other, and created bonds that have lasted far beyond our camp days. These friendships have taught me the importance of trust and companionship. My cabin sisters provided a safe space for me to express myself and be vulnerable. The camp environment, combined with these
before. I always wished I could be at camp.
My second year of camp, I remember fondly because of that year’s opening ceremony. Counselors were standing on tables and talking about how great the week would be. It will always be a highlight of my camp memories.
amazing friendships, played a vital role in shaping me to become who I am today.
This camp also taught me the importance of living in the moment. Without the distractions of every day life, I learned to appreciate the present. After enjoying many nights by the amphitheater, morning flag raising, and days filled with sweaty tennis matches, I was able to find joy in the simple experiences that made camp so freeing. Camp taught me that sometimes all I needed was to stop and listen to the birds every once in a while. This ability to be in the moment has helped me find peace and mindfulness in the simple things in life.
Hermann Sons Life Camp influenced me in many ways, from discovering my interests to learning to live in the present. Even though my dad surely didn’t appreciate my high pitched recitation of the camp songs on the way back from every week I spent at Hermann Sons, I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.
David Niemier
My first memories from camp are when I went with my family to drop my sister off for her first year. From parking on the grass by the softball field, to walking up to the Riverside pavilion where we waited for the first opening ceremony, to figuring out which cabin she would be living in during her first week of camp, I was excited. I remember walking into the cabin and talking to my dad about his experience at this same camp years
The next major part of my camp experience was the last night of my final year when some of the counselors talked about being a CIT (Counselor in Training). I knew then that I wanted CIT to be the next step of my journey at Hermann Sons Life Camp. My CIT years will always be special because of lifelong friendships made at this time.
The next two years I enjoyed being a full time counselor. Responsibility for campers in your supervision is a huge challenge but at the same time it gives you the opportunity of leadership and being involved in camp operations. These weeks taught me a lot about working with others. This past year’s staff development was a learning experience for me. Safety drills, including active shooter drills, were carried out in an informative but fun way. Activity verifications gave me the opportunity to become proficient in many areas.
My first week with campers had the environmental challenge of rain which forced us to stay in the cabins. I met this challenge by building forts, playing games and consoling scared campers. The week after, I was an activity counselor but with the curve ball of being at the girls camp. Different itinerary, different activities, and different female personalities caused me to adapt prior knowledge to the new needs. The next week the challenge was mini camp which allows seven and eight year olds to spend four days at camp. The immaturity of the campers caused more stress during this week, but it also allowed me to grow closer with my fellow counselors.
Like Miss Gaffney I spent eight very exciting summers at Hermann Sons Life Camp and will cherish this experience for the rest of my life.
