SAN ANTONIO – While HSL Camp, located in Comfort, was spared from the deadly July 4th flooding, Hermann Sons Life and the HSL Youth Foundation, Inc., mourns for all the lives lost, especially for the young campers, counselors and directors.
“Youth camps are a tight-knit community,” Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly said. “We were just shattered as the news of so many lost came to light.”
According to news reports, unprecedented torrential rain that fell overnight on July 4 swept away homes, vehicles, roads and trees. At least 135 died, including 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic in Hunt. Two camp directors also lost their lives.
“It’s devastating, I just feel for them and their families,” Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett said. “The entire camp community is feeling heartache.”
Due to a 10-day summer session that ended on Wednesday, July 2, instead of the usual Saturday, no campers were on site during the July 4 flooding on Friday. There were some staff and directors at the Hilltop site, but it was not in danger of flooding.
While the Riverside site, (for mer girls’ camp) located on lower ground, has had some flooding in the past, water did not reach the now vacant camp. This year, all camp sessions moved to the newer Hilltop site for coed sessions. HIlltop is not in a flood zone.
Cecily explained that some roads in the area were damaged, and others were very busy with first responders. Parents, children and staff were still trying to fathom the tragedy that occurred only a few miles away.
“We know it was disappointing to some, and we didn’t take the decision lightly, but we felt canceling the session was the best option for everyone,” Cecily said. Campers enrolled in the canceled session were given other options to attend this summer, and refunds were also available. HSL Camp reopened on Sunday, July 13.
“For me, it’s really hard to run camp knowing that happened,” Ian said. “It’s got to be tough for parents to send their kids to camp. We understand that.”
The most recent camp session was well attended.
“We mourn the loss of so many, but we need to move on with bringing smiles and laughter for our campers,” Cecily said.
Ian said emergency procedures are always a priority and will be reviewed consistently.
The next summer session at Hilltop was scheduled to begin Sunday, July 6. Out of extreme caution, the session was canceled.
During the July 4 torrential rainfall, water filled the fields surrounding HSL Camp, but water never reached the buildings.

President's Message
Powerful force of love emerges during tragedy
By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO
In the wake of the tragic flooding over the Fourth of July weekend, I couldn’t help but be moved by Texans coming together to support one another. In times such as these, I am reminded of the advice Fred Rogers recounts his mother giving him during difficult times, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
While nothing can replace precious lives lost, we can take solace in the fact that Texans are resilient. In the face of hard-
ship, Texans come together not just in thoughts and prayers, but in action and through donations and support in countless other ways. So many heroes have emerged driven by the desire to help their fellow man.
The flash floods were a sobering reminder that life can change in an instant. Homes, cars and other possessions can be replaced, and money replenished. Lives and time cannot be recovered. These moments remind us that we must make every moment count – to tell people we love them, make memories whenever possible
and offer a helping hand wherever and whenever we can. Now, more than ever, our neighbors need us. Whether it’s volunteering, donating to trusted organizations or keeping those affected in your prayers, your support is critical for recovery. Please remember when the media coverage fades and time passes, there will still be considerable need in the days to come.
While this wasn’t the Fourth of July anyone could have imagined, stories of hope have still emerged. Stories of so many volunteers helping with the
recovery efforts, along with a renewed commitment to each other, a deeper sense of gratitude and a reminder that love is the most powerful force we have. In addition, we will learn history’s lessons. They provide answers as to where we can do better, honoring the lives lost and ensuring lives are spared in the future.
Our beautiful Hill Country will rebuild and recover, emerging stronger than ever.
Hermann Sons Life is proud to support the Hill Country Flood Relief efforts. Please see front page for details.

Howie’s Happenings
Pups visit ‘grandparents’ for a fun, chaotic week
By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO
NEW BRAUNFELS – Howie and Beau had an exciting month thanks to a week-long visit from Krypto and Oakley who kept them on their toes. All four boys eagerly lined up for treats, with Oakley often trying to steal the others’ treats, leading to more than a few “discussions” amongst the boys. Fetch time was chaotic with Krypto and Oakley’s endless energy. I am pretty sure they wore Howie and Beau out. Sharing the bed was another issue – our boys usually snuggle with us, but with four dogs, Dave often ended up in the spare room. Since Oakley and Krypto’s departure, Howie’s been particularly upset about the change in the meal routine. Krypto is a picky eater, so he will only eat dog food if it’s covered in chick-
en, so Dave fed them all the same. Now that the guests are gone, the chicken has stopped, much to Howie’s dismay. He has been vocal with Dave about his dissatisfaction with his current meal service.
Howie and Beau wanted to give a big shout out to one of their biggest fans, Sparky. Thank you for being a loyal fan Sparky!
Howie and Beau wanted you to meet their new friend Adele. This petite, adorable, one-year-old girl was an owner surrender due to no fault of her own. She’s a very sweet girl, that is house-trained and cratetrained, and so willing to please. She likes to play fetch and has lots of energy.
Heart of Texas SPCA/HOTK9 Rescue will be hosting a live fundraiser with Jordan’s Way on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. –
Howie and Beau enjoyed a weeklong visit from Krypto and Oakley . Howie, left, and Beau enjoy a car ride.
1 p.m. Please help them spread the word so they can reach their fundraising goal. Every donation makes a difference to help save lives. You can donate and find out more details on their Face -

Czarnek has ties to HSL since childhood
SAN ANTONIO – When Robin came onboard with Hermann Sons Life in 2021, she was not new to HSL. In fact, Robin remembers going to the bowling alley as a child with her parents and attending dance class in the basement of the Home Office. She also has so many great memories of attending camp. She has been married to David for 34 years, and mother to Haley and Garrett, with daughter-in-law, Haley, joining the family. (She now has two Haley Czarneks in the family.) Robin’s family is everything to her and
they are her pride and joy. She includes their two dogs, Howie and Beau, as part of her family and she loves sharing their shenanigans with you each month. Robin’s career in the insurance industry began in 1988. Over the years, she has held a number of roles – from agent to agency owner to leader and mentor. For more than 20 years, she owned an Allstate agency, building a loyal client base, earning many awards and recognition trips.

Home Office hosts luncheon
The Hermann Sons Life Home Office hosted a Mexican buffet luncheon on June 26 for A Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA) volunteers and officials, representatives from The Conservation Society of San Antonio, LAZ Parking representatives and HSL officers and staff. Each week, NIOSA flower makers gather at the Home Office to create the colorful decorations for the annual four-night festival in downtown San Antonio. The committee chairman thanked HSL for giving the volunteers a home to work on their flowers year-round. NIOSA is sponsored by and benefits the Conservation Society. LAZ Parking coordinates parking at the HSL parking lots with NIOSA for the event.

The dance schools are designed to teach the art of dance in a wholesome atmosphere of fun, work, physical exercise and fellowship.
Dance class tuition is $38 per month for nine months or you may choose to pay the full
amount of $342 at registration. A $200 registration fee is due at the time of enrollment. Active Hermann Sons Life members receive a waiver for the registration fee.
Dance tuition and registration fees help each dance class pay for expenses during the year and the Home Office cost for teacher salaries and any other
expenses that are incurred. Each teacher is an employee of the HSL Youth Foundation, Inc. The teacher(s) and at least two parent volunteers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school.
The deadline to register is Oct. 1. In most instances, the dance season follows the school calendar.

Columbia Lodge says goodbye to a brother
DALLAS – Hello from North Texas! Columbia Lodge will meet on Sunday, Aug. 3, at 3 p.m. at the Sons of Hermann Hall.
The annual summer picnic was held in June. Members enjoyed some great outdoor cooking by Bobby Wilbanks as well as visiting with other members. Little did we know then that it would be our last visit with dear friend, Glenn Marvin who passed away on June 18. Glenn crossed over surrounded by family, friends and a few selected tunes (namely by Billy Joe Shaver and Hayes Carll). We miss you, Glenn.
The lodge continues its volunteerism with Resource Center’s bingo on Aug. 16. Join Hands Day was scheduled for July 26 where members are
volunteering with Youth First for a family friendly splash day. We’ll have pictures in our September article.
The calendar for the rest of the year is as follows: meeting dates are Sept. 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2 (followed by our Thanksgiv-
Czarnek a licensed agent for 35 years
Cont’d from Pg. 3
She was honored to serve as a media spokesperson for Allstate, serving on a number of councils and boards, as well as a speaker and continuing education teacher for her insurance expertise.
“I’ve always loved helping agents grow their businesses,” Robin says. “But what I emphasize most is always doing the right thing. An organization built on solid foundation with strong ethics and solid practices will be able to weather storms and stand the test of time.”
Being a licensed agent for more than 35 years, and then holding her securities licenses
with Series 6 and 63 for nearly 18 years, Robin has helped countless families plan for the future and navigate some devasting losses. But, it’s her work now with Hermann Sons Life that feels like she has come full circle.
“From childhood memories to now working every day to help shape the future of this organization – it’s a blessing and an honor I don’t take lightly” she said.
Robin believes deeply in the power of HSL Youth Foundation programs like dance and camp.
“Not only do they allow kids the freedom to be kids, camp and dance teach kids how to be good stewards, work cooperatively together, how to lead with
patriotism and faith, and how to form real relationships – something we’re losing in a high-tech world.”
She credits her mother for the sacrifices that kept her connected to the HSL world as a child, and her husband Dave for always being willing to step in – whether it’s attending lodge meetings or crafting wood projects for HSL, even when his back hurts.
Robin and Dave reside in New Braunfels and are members of the New Braunfels Lodge. They enjoy attending and being part of the NB lodge, as well as visiting lodges across the state and meeting our wonderful members.

He received the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award in 2022 from the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio for his fundraising skills. He plans to go into the fire academy, just like his dad.

specifically physical therapy.
Emmy FitzGerald graduated from Davenport High School. Emmy has been dancing her way through life ever since her first Hermann Sons Life dance class. The passion that was ignited is evident as she led her schools dance team as the captain.
Even more impressive, she was selected as Davenport’s first student representative for the College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR) Program where she met alongside school district and community members to determine future programs at Comal ISD.
Emmy also earned a spot on the dance team at Stephen F. Austin University where she will study kinesiology with the ultimate goal of becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic Studies.
Kailyn Kusenberger is a homeschooled graduate. Kailyn’s high school career looked a little dif-
ferent than most, but that didn’t stop her from pushing toward the goals she set for herself.
As the oldest of five children, teaching is second nature which is why she is pursuing a degree in early childhood education. Not only will Kailyn be hitting the books in college, but she’ll also be hitting the ball on the fields as a member of Stephen F. Austin University’s softball team.
Kayla Kucherka is a graduate of Canyon High School. Kayla comes from a long line of Hermann Sons Life members; over 100 years of membership just between her dad and grandmother.
As a member of Canyon High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Kayla doesn’t shy away from responsibility, teamwork or a chance to make a difference.
