column and a few scant fragments strewn on the ground are all that remains of this Seventh Wonder of the Ancient World.

According to Strabo, the Temple of Artemis was destroyed at least seven times and subsequently rebuilt just as many times as well. Archaeological findings instead attest to at least four reconstructions of this temple, starting in the 7th century B.C. It is said that the Artemision was built on an existing temple site, which had been washed away in a great flood. Although the existence of this ancient temple cannot be sufficiently substantiated, it is commonly considered the first Temple of Artemis.

Cretan architect Chersiphron and Metagenes erected the Ionic dipteral temple in the 6th century B.C, around 550 BC. It was reportedly around 377 feet long and 180 feet wide.It was supposedly the first Greek temple built of marble, with peripteral columns some 40 feet high. The row of single columns was doubled to make a wide ceremonial passage around the room that housed the goddess' cult image.

In a misguided attempt to become famous, the temple was set on fire by Herostratus. Strangely enough, the destruction of the temple coincided with the birth of Alexander the Great. He also offered to finance the reconstruction, but his offer was turned down and eventually the temple was finished only after his demise.

The successive structure, again built entirely of marble, was begun in 334 and was finished in 250 B.C. The third temple was larger than the second; 450 feet long, 225 feet wide and 60 feet high, with more than 127 columns. Literary sources describe the temple's adornment by paintings, gilded columns of gold and silver, and religious works of renowned Greek sculptors Polyclitus, Pheidias, Cresilas, and Phradmon. Endoeus, a pupil of Daedalus, is said to be the sculptor of Artemis' main cult image.

The temple served as both a marketplace and a religious institution. The sanctuary was visited by merchants, tourists, artisans, and kings who paid homage to the goddess by sharing their profits with her. Recent archeological excavations at the site revealed gifts from pilgrims including statuettes of Artemis made of gold and ivory, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and artifacts from as far as Persia and India.
