Pranab defends Mamata stance on Azad killing PTI KOLKATA AUG 29

Defending Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said he found “nothing wrong” in the key UPA ally’s statement that the killing of top Maoist leader Azad was not correct. Mukherjee, a senior Congress leader, also said there was no reason to suspect that the Railway Minister’s party had links with the Maoists if she thought that the Naxal problem can be negotiated through dialogue. “I don’t think so. We had a detailed discussion with the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Mamata Banerjee and she has explained her position”, he said when asked whether Banerjee, being part of the UPA government, was unjustified in saying that the killing of Cherakuri Rajkumar alias Azad was not correct. Banerjee at her Lalgarh rally in West Bengal on August 9 had said Azad’s killing was “not correct” sparking a controversy and she also faced flak from the Opposition. Azad was killed by Andhra Pradesh Special Intelligence Branch at Adilabad district on July 2 allegedly in a fake encounter.

Yet another scandal rocked Pakistan cricket on Sunday engulfing its captain Salman Butt, brilliant pace duo of Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir and four other players, leading to the arrest of a bookie in London and questioning of the players by the Scotland Yard after a tabloid sting. Scotland Yard detectives visited the Pakistan dressing room immediately after the third day’s play to question the players after the tabloid sting operation exposed ‘spot-fixing’ and the alleged nexus between the players and bookies. “Scotland Yard detectives had visited the team hotel where they had taken statements of captain Salman Butt, fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir, and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal,” Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed told PTI. The ‘News of the World’ tabloid alleged that a Pakistani man Mazhar Majeed, who is now under arrest, had paid bribes to the players to bowl no-balls in the series and the Lord’s Test. The video evidence that the tabloid has presented also shows Majeed talking about his links with Indian bookies. “I deal with an Indian party. They pay me for the information,” Majeed is quoted as saying. The International Cricket Council said it was aware of the developments but made it clear (Continued on page 10)

The Election Commission of India has expressed skepticism over recent practices by few candidates who secretly infringe the ‘upper spending ceiling’ of the expenditure limits during election, an ECI official said. “The Election Commission is concerned that there should not be unaccountable expenditure. The deliberations will also be made on how candidates should not be allowed to break the election expenditure clandestinely,” ECI Director General Akshay Raut said at a press briefing on Sunday. He further said that the zonal conference of Chief Electoral Officers of eleven states and Union territories on August 31 in Panjim will review the above situation, which will be presided over by Chief Election Commissioner of India Dr S Y

Qureshi and ECI V S Sampat. The conference will interestingly also highlight the concern on the trend of paid news/reports during elections. The DG said that ECI is set to keep a watch over such illegalities, as well. “Media and political parties play significant role in the fair election practices. CEOs have to do their best to deal with the problem and hence they are already issued assets of guidelines on June 8,” he added. Raut said that ECI is committed to have perfect electoral rolls and it will ensure that every individual above the age of 18 years are on the voters list to participate in the election process. The ECI team will host a diamond jubilee photo exhibition on Monday.

PHONES CONFISCATED

Scotland Yard officials have confiscated the mobile phones of the captain Salman Butt, and bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif, after questioning several key players in the team.

NO-BALLED: Mohammad Aamir and Mohammad Asif

New video shows two players meeting bookie PTI LONDON, AUG 29

More video footage which could implicate two new players of the Pakistan cricket team in allegations of corruption was released by British tabloid ‘News of the World’ tonight. The video shows arrested bookie Mazhar Majeed taking cash from the undercover reporter of the tabloid and putting it in a jacket.

Test against England at Lord’s exactly when he had predicted. Mohammad Aamer the man-of-the-series, and Mohammad Asif, delivered the blatant no-balls at the exact points in the match agreed with the alleged fixer.

Majeed is seen telling the undercover reporter that he needs to pay 10,000 pounds in advance before Pakistani players could be introduced to him. The reporter then gives Majeed 10,000 pounds and the two drive to a hotel where the Pakistani team is dining. He then introduces the reporter to two Pakistani players — Umar Amin and Wahab Riaz. The bowling of a no-ball when a bowler’s front foot passes entirely over the popping crease - is not likely to make any highlights. But the different aspects of a game that are now available to be bet on, means it could be very financially significant for the betting world. Spot-betting is a type of gambling on markets that are effectively “games within games”. This could be things such as the runs scored in a specific 10-over period, the number of catches in an innings, the number of runs scored by a specific player or the number of no-balls in an innings. Being able to accurately

predict even small parts of the game is potentially very lucrative. In this form of betting, not only the bet itself but also the size of the stake won or lost are determined by events on the field. For example, a bookmaker may make a forecast on the number of runs scored in an over and gamblers bet on whether that prediction is too high or low. Their winnings or losses will correspond with the difference between the runs actually scored and the bookmakers’ forecast. An unexpected run of either good or bad form can therefore win or lose fortunes.

THE RESULT Pakistan lost the fourth Test match by an innings and 225 runs — their record Test loss — with more than a day to spare here on Sunday for a 3-1 series defeat.

Sources stated that Abhijit, who is now lodged back in prison, was non active member of the ploy. “He escaped with two others as he got a chance but he is not an active member,” a senior officer stated. The inquiry has suggested that there should be two ring police security for this vital jail. “In absence of police security, there should at least be private security manning it,” official said. Also the structural fault, which is not considered during the construction of jail, has been pointed out in the report.

650 Indians on Interpol’s ‘wanted’ list PTI NEW DELHI, AUG 29

The number of Indians or people of Indian origin on Interpol’s ‘wanted’ list is on the rise with 656 of them getting red-alert notices in little over five years. The global crime monitoring organisation has issued 656 redalert notices against Indians or people of Indian origin between January 2005 and May 2010, generally for crimes committed in countries other than India. A highest of 150 red notices were issued last year while the number stood at 75 in the first five months of this year. Many of these wanted people are involved in terrorism or serious crimes like rape of a minor. A red alert or red corner notice obliges immigration and police forces of all member countries to arrest the person.

CAT: unique questions for each candidate PTI NEW DELHI, AUG 29

With an aim to bring about greater accuracy and international standards to the Common Admission Test (CAT), the agency organising the examination has planned to introduce different sets of question papers from this year. “Each question paper will be a little different from the other, but its evaluation would be done on the same scale,” Managing Director of Prometric, Soumitra Roy said. “Since each question paper will be different, it might be possible that some questions are tougher than others. We’ll keep this in mind while conducting evaluation,” informed Roy. He said the agency has made special arrangements to maintain accuracy and impartiality while testing stud e n t s i n t h e C AT 2 0 1 0 examination. The CAT examination will be held between October 27 and November 24 in 33 cities in the country. The duration of the exam will be two-anda-half hours. The results will be declared on January 12, 2011. Last year, the CAT exam was held online and had reported several technical glitches, raising doubts about the new method.

India denies Chinese taking away maps PTI NEW DELHI/BEIJING, AUG 29

India on Sunday sought to play down an incident in which some Chinese entered into the Indian pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai and took away brochures that contained map of India. An External Affairs Ministry spokesman in New Delhi said, “there is no factual basis to this report” which stated that officers of China’s Public Security Bureau (PSB) marched into the Indian pavilion, taking away the maps showing Arunachal Pradesh as part of India, a fact that Beijing disputes. “There has been no interference in the functioning of our pavilion at Shanghai Expo,” the spokesman said.
