K a n t a r a m a re o f v a r i o u s t y p e s s u c h a s Solos/Duets/Duos/Trios/Quartets/Quintets etc. Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) has observed that the present day composers and singers very often go for solo singing only and do not promote Duets/Duos/Trios/Quartets/Quintets etc. In order to preserve and promote Duets/Duos/Trios/Quartets and Quintets in its true form as they were presented on the tiatr stage in the past, TAG has organised a competition of singing of original Duets, Duos, Trios, Quartets and Quintets on September 18, 2010 from 10am onwards at the Conference Hall of Goa State Museum at Patto Plaza, Panjim. The rules for participation in this competition are that the songs sung should be newly composed, the lyrics should be of interactive nature and every singer should be a different character in the presentation. Care should also be taken to have original music and the lyrics for the same should be submitted to TAG along with the prescribed Application Form duly filled on or before September 9, 2010 at the office of TAG. The composers and singers of Duets/Trios/Quartets/Quintets are requested to participate in large numbers and help in preserving these songs in their true form. The Application Forms along with the rules and regulations of the competition are available at TAG’s office, Campal Trade Centre, Behind Military Hospital, Campal, Panjim during office hours.

HERALD FEATURES aving played a major role in bringing back on stage some of the popular dramas of the tiatrists of yesteryears under the banner Anifa Productions, Anil Kumar makes his debut with his sensational drama ‘Maim, what is this?’. Before the curtains go up, Anil Kumar makes a point that his efforts in the drama have been in presenting the evil that prevails in the society and the urgent need to drive away the demon that has stepped in to destroy the families. He further stresses that all the characters in the drama are purely fictitious by nature. Although one may not get to enjoy a direct flow of sequences, there are many twists and turns, followed by flashback scenes, which had the viewers glued to their seats. Val’lap Caculo aka Vicky (Michael Gracias), a rich businessman, is hungry for love and he seeks it from other women as he fails to receive it from his wife. His mission is further accomplished with help and support from his PA Newton (Anil Kumar). Vicky hopes that his involvement with Sophia (Nancy Gomes) will yield good returns and he promises her with one final gift— marriage. Sophia’s mom Tanya Fizardo (Fatima) does not hesitate to extend all her support to Vicky’s plans as she too gets her share in return. Being carried away by gifts, free foreign trips and the promise of settling down for life, Sophia takes the decision to ditch her husband Bosco (Dr Kiran) for Vicky, who she believes is greedy for wealth. Over a period of time, things turn topsy-turvy for Vicky when Sophia realises that the influential businessman is flirting with her with empty promises. HERALD FEATURES he Goan Folk Art Group in collaboration with the Directorate of Art and Culture and Navjivan Society of Freedom Fighter recently organised the 3rd Folk Art Festival at Azad Bhavan, Alto Porvorim. The Guest of Honour senior freedom fighter Flaviano Dias got nostalgic about the pre liberation era and said “Children should know the story behind the freedom movement and inculcate interest to work for the development of the nation.” Director of Information and Publicity, Menino Peres said, “The youth and the children are benefited by such types of festivals as they are given an opportunity to explore their talent.” The President of the Goan Folk Art Group Joaquim Lourenco Fernandes was honoured with a memento presented by the Senior Citizens Group of Porvorim for completing 50 years in the field of Folk Art. The special guests present on stage were Sarpanch of Socorro Pratima Narvekar and Selena de Souza, Principal of Chubby Cheeks High School, Pilerne. President of Goan Folk Art Group said, “A lot of work still needs to be done for the upliftment of our Culture.” The program began with patriotic song by the Chubby Cheeks High School, followed by a Fugdi performance by the Vital Rastolo Mandal, various group like Mando Mogi and Porvorichim Noketram which filled the evening with lovely Mandos like ‘Chitracarachim Dukam’ led by Celina Cordeiro, ‘Gopit Mog’ led by Avelino Fernandes, Novo Tratu led by Sabita Nazareth, ‘Tukach Rautalim’ led by Avelino Fernandes. The Senior Citizen Group performed ‘Pipla Peddar Duno’ led by Linda Braganca. Children dressed in traditional Goan dress danced the Dekhni and Fugdi to the music that was played and sung by Lourenco Fernandes to the beat of the Ghumot was appreciated by audience. The evening came to a close as Lourenco Fernandes sung ‘Adeus Korcho Vellu Paulo’ accompanied by Selvin Braganza on violin and Linda Braganca on piano.

HERALD FEATURES man. A prompt drastic step by Sophia makes matters worse for Vicky. Efforts to save her life prove futile for him. But was he really serious in saving the life of Sophia? Sophia’s brother Melwyn (Victor) makes a dash to Goa from abroad in order to attend his sister’s funeral. He doubts Vicky’s involvement in the death of his only sister. To avoid making matters worse, Vicky seals the mouth of Sophia’s maid Libru (Angela Moraes), who knows the secrets behind the entire story, by offering her money. How will the truth be finally exposed? What reward does Newton receive for his services to Vicky? What is Vicky’s fate? Ultimately, who is the winner and who is the loser? Michael and Nancy in the lead share perfect chemistry on stage. They are ably supported by Fatima, Dr Kiran and Victor. But the police station and the crime branch, besides the hospital was presented in poor light. Efforts on the part of the director on stage sets, background music and light effects would have helped to bring standard in the drama and make it a presentable one. Sanjay Kalangutkar as hawaldar excels with his typical Marathi ascent on several occasions. George Gonsalves as DySP and Cinnet Cort as the DySP of the crime branch have done justice to their respective roles. Comic interludes by Angela Moraes, Gabby and Michael bring in pills of laughter among the audience. Some of the songs rendered by Succoro de Santa Cruz, Sonia, Victor, Michael Gracias, George Gonsalves were worth listening and had powerful messages to the listeners.
