Entrepreneurship program

PANJIM (HND): A three-day workshop on entrepreneurship development for the vocational students of Shiroda Higher Secondary School and apprentice trainees was conducted at Rayeshwar Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, Shiroda in collaboration with Board of Apprenticeship Training-Western region, Mumbai. Vice-Principal of Cuncolim United Higher Secondary School Silvestre Rodrigues, Fr Simao Diniz and Ashwini Yadav, Philip Almeida and Amay Amashekar were the resource persons for the workshop.

NSS camp held

PANJIM (HND): The NSS camp of Dhempe College of Arts and Science was held recently in Pomburpa at Mother of God Church and the associated school St Elizabeth HS. The NSS volunteers levelled the school volleyball ground, the school garden and cleaned the surrounding. Training in self employment skills such as mushroom culture, grafting techniques and vermicomposting was taken up by ICAR, Ella farms, Old Goa. A snake awareness programme was conducted by a team from wild life and ecotourism department. Doctor Sangam Kurade held a session on entrepreneurship with the volunteers. Professor Prajal Sakardande organised a heritage walk for the volunteers and explained the history of Pomburpa Church, the chair on which Pope John Paul II sat when he visited Goa in 1986. Prof Vaishalli Naik conducted a session on Lokgeet. Principal Dr Yasmin Modassir addressed the students during the inaugural and the valedictory programme of the camp .The camp was coordinated by the NSS in-charge Professor Maria Miranda.

‘Law Day’ observed

SANGUEM (HC): The Taluka Legal Services Committee, Quepem, in co-ordination with South Goa Legal Services Cell, Margao, observed ‘Law Day’ by organizing a camp on legal awareness in the premises of Civil and Criminal Court, Quepem. On the occasion, Adv Victor Diniz spoke on the role of advocates in the society, while Adv J Fernandes gave a detail account on classes of people entitled for Free Legal Aid and rights and remedies available to common man under Consumer Protection Act. Adv V G Naik spoke on new amendments to be followed in criminal cases. The Quepem Taluka Legal Services Authority also observed Children’s Day by organizing a camp for the students at Government Primary School, Xeldem-Quepem, on November 27. Adv Cynthia Parab provided the students a gist on Child Labour and need to eradicate it. Adv Pavitra Naik spoke on health care services available to the students, while Adv V G Naik spoke on duties of children towards their parents.

Former Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira has requested government authorities not to grant permission to a proposed mega festival at Candolim beach between December 27 and 29. In a letter to Calangute police and other authorities, Sequeira claimed that the festival could involve various illegal activities like the drug and sex trade besides other immoral activities, which would bring a bad name to the villages of Candolim and Calangute. He claimed that a young woman had allegedly died of an overdose of drugs at the festival last year. "Though the people are against the festival, the high and mighty have suppressed the decent voices for ulterior motives. The locals are also against the festival as it causes commotion in the village and traffic congestion," said Sequeira in his letter.

The first Konkani gramophone record was produced in the year 1910 thereby creating yet another historical happening in the history of Konkani drama, song and music. The first Konkani song was produced by Joao Agostinho Fernandes and the first song recorded on gramophone record was ‘Mirmireancho Mog’ sung by Joao Agostinho Fernandes and his daughter Sofia. In order to celebrate this historic happening, Tiatr Academy Goa has organized a special function on December 22 at the Conference Hall of Tiatr Academy Goa, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, at 4.45 pm. Dr Rafael Fernandes will speak on the completion of 100 years for Konkani song to be recorded on a gramophone record. Veteran singer Ansu Rodrigues who dominated the singing of Konkani songs on All India Radio in the 60s and 70s will be the chief guest. TAG President Tomazinho Cardozo will preside over the function. This will be followed by a cultural programme of singing of old Konkani songs from gramophone records by Anthony San, Clarissa, Socorro de St Cruz and Sonia Fernandes. MMC blamed for failure to prevent fire mishaps HERALD CORRESPONDENT PORVORIM, DEC 21

The Shiv Sena has blamed the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) and other authorities for failing to take measures to tackle fire mishaps in the market. In a press note, the ad hoc committee of Shiv Sena claimed that the fire hydrants installed in the market are white elephants and are not yet functional. "We have to say that the fire hydrants have only been a publicity stunt," the Shiv Sena said. "There are unauthorized hawkers occupying the streets of the market, making it impossible for fire brigade vehicles to reach the spot. We blame the municipality for the huge loss suffered by the shopkeepers," stated the press note.

CURCHOREM (HC): Guardian Angel Church at Curchorem will organise a number of programmes to celebrate the Christmas season from December 25 to January 1. The celebration will began with serenade, singing of carols and a small skit with a Christmas message to prepare the coming of Jesus Christ followed by Christmas midnight mass. From December 26 to 28, a variety of entertainment programmes will be presented by different wards, like carols, group dances, and one-act play. To encourage budding artistes, a special programme will be performed by the Parish Youth on December 29. They will also watch the cribs displayed by the families in their homes. There will be a one-hour adoration before the Blessed Sacrament followed by midnight mass on December 31.
