marriage is more than just a means for having a child and a man should never desert his wife because she can’t have a child, this is the message conveyed by Mario Menezes through ‘Tem Tuka Naka’. Although Shawin (Mario Menezes) is deeply in love with Delcy (Rosy Alvares), he equally showers affection on Dale (Jessica Gomes). Delcy’s brother Nathan (Lawry Travasso) is very much concerned about his only sister and wishes to secure her future. Nathan knows about Shawin’s loose character and is aware of his involvement with his sister; hence to prevent him from going astray, he wants Nathan to marry Delcy quickly. Soon after Dale leaves the country with a vow to return and settle with her beloved, at the behest of Nathan, Shawin marries Delcy. On learning about this, Dale returns to Goa and confronts Shawin. She coaxes Shawin to leave Delcy and Shawin seeks divorce from his wife. But Delcy is determined to stay married. News of his sister being tortured by her husband reaches Nathan and he seeks to find the actual truth behind the harassment. He learns just that when he spots Shawin with Dale. Sensing that Nathan could be an obstacle in her plans, she hatches a plan to get him out of her way. Delcy is shattered when she gets the news of her brother’s death, but she doesn’t doubt her husband to be the main culprit. How does the truth come to light? Who reveals the truth? What is Shawin’s fate? Who remains faithful till the end? All the artistes have played their roles to perfection. Jessica Gomes too deserves a mention for her stage presence and prompt dialogue delivery. The storyline flows with a pinch of suspense till the very end. The director has taken pains on the stage setting and light effects. Comic interludes by Ben Evangelisto, Selvy, Richard and Joana brought in pills of laughter among the viewers. Besides enjoying the acts, a couple of meaningful songs provide value for money to the spectators. Solos, duets and trios by Jessica Gomes, Rosy Alvares, Xavier Gomes, Marcus Vaz, Francis de Tuem, Lawry Travasso, Tony de Ribandar, Maythan, Joana and Ben Evangelisto were thought-provoking and deliver a message or two to the audience.

HERALD FEATURES n view of the forthcoming 41st International Film Festival of India, Goa-2010, the Chief Executive Officer of the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) desires to understand the problems faced by the media and implement apt solutions for the eleven-day festival. After discussions with the Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ), the ESG has convened a meeting on August 17 at 3pm at the Press Room of the ESG. GUJ has requested its members, other journalists including electronic media representatives, representatives of periodicals, etc to attend the meeting to give their valuable suggestions pertaining to professional needs of the media. For more information call 9822179125. Meanwhile, in a new initiative ESG has simplified the procedure of registration for IFFI 2010. If you have registered as a delegate during IFFI 2009 you need not register as a fresh delegate. ESG has sent an email with an ID No and PIN No to the address provided by you at the time of registration in 2009. Using this, the delegates can view their data and submit the same application again. However, if data like phone numbers, addresses, have changed, these can be updated online in the same mail and can be submitted online. The approval is automatic. As part of this initiative, about 420 delegates have already registered in just four days. The initiative is supported by National Informatics Centre and jointly organised by NIC and ESG. Fresh applicants can also register using the ESG website www.iffigoa.org for IFFI 2010.

At the onset, three different families are projected on one setting wherein due to the split of the parents, Daniel (Camerone) is brought up single-handedly by his grandparent Casmiro (Roseferns) with much love and affection. In another family, Shastri (comedian Selvy) lives with his wife Maria Chagas (Antonette), who is the legal advisor of a woman’s organisation. Preoccupation deprives both to give due attention to their only son Benzer (Benzer), who gradually goes astray. Although Gangu (Roshan) lives alone with her sister’s daughter Sonali (Shenaya), Shastri often flirts with her in his wife’s absence. As Benzer is overprotected by his mom, he easily resorts to petty thefts and lies. On the other hand, Daniel receives due attention from his grandfather and is groomed in the right manner. Benzer is dismissed from school for his poor performance and he gets hooked to drugs. Daniel steps in to help his friend after learning about his addiction. But fearing that Daniel may complain to the police and this may ruin his career, Benzer kills his friend in a strange manner. Who is blamed for Daniel’s death? What are the consequences? Teenagers Benzer, Shenaya and Camerone have done justice to their respective roles. In one scene, the drug peddler’s appearance in disguise of a priest clearly indicated disrespect to the garment of the clergy and could have been avoided. Stress being laid on the stage setting as well as the light effects brought colour to the drama. Comic interludes by Selvy, Sally, Costy and Brian brought in pills of laughter among the viewers. Some of the songs by Francis de Tuem, Lawry Travasso, Camerone, Peter/Roshan, Antonette/Victor/Tari were worth listening and well accepted.
‘Kednam Utt’ttolo?’ asks Prince Jacob BY PRAJAL SAKHARDANDE rince Jacob’s latest tiatr can be described in just this one word, Superb! Prince Jacob questions his Goan brethren about the state of affairs in Goa through the tiatr ‘Kednam Utt’ttolo’. Addressing a pertinent topic through satire, Prince Jacob provides scenarios and the destruction of Goa at the hands of unscrupulous ministers and politicians. Many lessons and messages are found in this play which revolves around its main protagonist, a freedom fighter played by Jose Menezes, and his family and his disillusionment in life due to the corrupt political set-up. For the first time on the Konkani stage, two revolving stages have been used, creating a fabulous effect. The issue of Goans and the non-Goans and the changing demographic of the state is the key theme of the tiatr. With an artistic backdrop of Goa’s natural heritage in the form of green hills, fields, the coconut and the jack fruit tree, the tinte, the kharvi and the toddy tapper, the play unfolds a drama that our Goa needs to be saved and rightly so. As PA to a corrupt minister, Humbert is brilliant; his sense of timing, wit, humour is truly hilarious. The Waka Waka number sends the audience into splits of laughter. As the freedom fighter, Jose Menezes essays his role to perfection. Simon Gonsalves as the corrupt minister Azavedo is impressive. Equally impressive are the performances of Prince Jacob, Jose Rose and Bernard Fernandes as the inspector. Though this is a serious topic, Prince Jacob has done a good job of conveying the right messages in a light manner; bitter medicine with a spoonful of sugar. The music band of Prince Jacob led by the Dominick and his Jolly Boys, light effects by John Fernandes and the stage set by Kamlakant Chari and stage manager Joaquim also deserve a special mention.
