Tar balls at Mumbai’s Juhu Beach HERALD CORRESPONDENT MUMBAI, SEPT 11

Mumbai’s popular Juhu Beach is facing a crisis similar to Goa, as tar balls are washing ashore and polluting the sands since Tuesday, which have severely affected several areas of the beach. According to local residents, tar balls washes up on the Juhu Beach every year during the monsoon, but this year the beach has witnessed more tar balls than ever before. The tar balls have covered a massive stretch of Juhu Beach. Locals are angry with the Maharashtra government for not taking any action to stop dumping of oil by passing ships, which they say is responsible. They said that so far, no official from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has come to inspect the beach.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today accused the Chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umer Farooq of betraying the trust reposed when his close aide asked for permission for march to Lal Chowk and said violent incidents would result in setback for any political initiative in the State. “Today’s protests were uncalled for as people wanted to celebrate Eid after a month-long fasting. But violence like today’s will result in set back for any initiative that the Government can think for breaking the impasse,” he said reacting to protests in the state capital in which two government buildings were set on fire. Accusing Mirwaiz and JKLF Chief Yaseen Malik of failing in their duty to maintain peace, Omar said “It was Mirwaiz’s office which approached a senior official in my government and requested for permission to have a march to Lal Chowk. “They were repeatedly asked that the mob will go out of control but the repeated insistence

from the separatist camp for allowing them a political space for peaceful march made me overrule suggestions of my police officials. However, whatever has happened later from Lal Chowk can be termed as betrayal of trust,” he said. While the Chief Minister re-

CCS to discuss Kashmir crisis on Monday PTI NEW DELHI, SEPT 11

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will meet on Monday to discuss measures like partial withdrawal of controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) for breaking the impasse in Jammu and Kashmir but today’s sudden flare up of violence in Srinagar appeared to put Government in a spot. Prime Minister, who conferred with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, his Cabinet colleagues and senior party leaders in the Congress Core Group yesterday, has convened the meeting to discuss the situation and consider options.

Social networking bug hits Churchill too HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, SEPT 11

After Education Minister, Babush Monserrate, the social networking bug has hit PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao as well. Three days after the education minister lodged a police complaint alleging that unknown persons have opened his account on Facebook; Alemao has lodged a similar complaint with the Colva police. Alemao’s personal assistant

Fredrick Borges last night lodged a written complaint with the Colva police stating that unknown persons have opened an account on social networking site Orkut uploading wrong information and false profile of the PWD minister pertaining to his political and social life. Borges maintained that the information is not only false but maligns the image of PWD minister and called for necessary action on a priority basis.

A written complaint was lodged with the Colva police stating that unknown persons have opened an account on Orkut uploading wrong information and false profile of Mr Alemao.

Sources in the know said that information relating to Alemao’s political rivals was also uploaded on the site. It is learnt that Alemao’s account on the Facebook was reportedly spotted by his children, and after inquiry, it became clear that the PWD minister has not opened any account on the social networking site. The matter was immediately taken up with the Superintendent of Police, South, Allan De Sa, following which a complaint was lodged with the Colva police on late Saturday night. When contacted, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Margao DySP Umesh Gaonkar said the Colva police have registered a case against unknown persons for impersonation on the net under the Information Technology Act 2005. The Colva police are probing. The Panjim police are believed to have written to Facebook asking for all details of the person, who created and operated the social networking account in the name of the education minister.

frained from naming the close aide of Mirwaiz, but sources said the offer was made by the Hurriyat Chairman through Shahid-ul-Islam, a former chief of terrorist group Hizbullah. Omar said the onus for maintaining peace was totally on the two separatists leaders who have been “accusing my government for not providing them space for a peaceful protest.” Asked whether such incidents would cast a shadow on the talks about partial removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), he said “while we want the changes to take place but such incidents would definitely have a bearing on any moves to restore peace.” Mirwaiz aide reasoned out that the march was a political necessity for them as the space for separatists in the Valley was shrinking fast, the sources said. However, as the mob in Lal Chowk started turning hostile, Mirwaiz and his aides quickly disappeared from the scene. Reacting to Omar, Mirwaiz said it was people’s anger that was playing out on the street though he would not justify the violence.

Centre not to ban iron ore exports PTI BANGALORE, SEPT 11

Rejecting Karnataka government’s plea, the Centre today ruled out the possibility of banning iron ore exports, saying such move would result in massive unemployment, revenue losses and social tensions. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said Indian mines produced close to 230-235 million tonnes annually and the domestic consumption was 85-90 million tonnes, leaving an exportable surplus of over 140 million tonnes. He said this surplus could not be stored because it was environmentally hazardous. Sharma pointed out that mining was done in poor, backward areas of the country and the mining industry contributed substantially to the country’s economy. “This industry employs tens of thousands, may be millions. If the export is stopped, it would lead to massive unemployment leading to social tensions”, he said.

US ‘will never be at war with Islam’: Obama PTI WASHINGTON, SEPT 11

As he led Americans in remembering the victims of the 9/11 attacks, President Barack Obama today pledged that the US will “never be at war” with Islam as it was dreaded terror group AlQaeda which attacked the country, not a religion. Addressing fellow citizens on the heels of a Florida pastor threatening to burn copies of Quran and the controversy surrounding plans to build a mosque near the Ground Zero, Obama said the terrorist elements may seek to spark conflict between different faiths. The pastor has since abandoned the plans. “...but as Americans we are not — and never will be — at war with Islam. It was not a religion that attacked us that September day — it was Al-Qaeda, a sorry band of men which perverts religion,” Obama said in his address from Pentagon, one of the sites of the attacks. He also vowed to keep the nation safe come what may and remembered the victims of the terrorist attacks in New York, Pentagon and Pennsylvania that

killed more than 3,000 people. “For our nation, this is a day of remembrance, a day of reflection, and — with God’s grace — a day of unity and renewal,” Obama said as he paid a visit to hallowed ground at the Pentagon and laid a wreath. The main function was held at the Ground Zero site in New York City, attended by the Vice President Joe Biden.

After Mickky, CBI now grills Sara HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, SEPT 11

Day after former minister Francisco ‘Mickky’ Pacheco was grilled for nearly three hours by Delhi Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths, on Friday, the agency interrogated his estranged wife Sara at its branch office in Bambolim on Saturday. CBI’s Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) sleuths probing into the illegal immigration racket against Mickky quizzed Sara for over three hours between 3:50 pm and 7 pm. Sara escorted by social activist Auda Viegas and local Calvert Gomes reached CBI office, three

hours after she was telephonically summoned by the investigating agency. Speaking to one of the investigating officers, inspector Yadav told Herald that it was a basic interrogation and Sara might be called for further questioning if required. Mickky, 46, who is an alleged accused of forging documents to send Goans abroad, especially United States, was interrogated on Friday evening. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator had said that the agency namely ‘Manpower Recruitment Agency’ was a joint venture started by him and Sara in 1998, whereas its license expired in 2000. He also claimed that he stopped handling affairs of the agency after he separated from his wife. To a question whether Sara produced any documents to level her charges against Mickky, the officer replied that they had not asked her to bring any documents. “We did not ask her to get any documents today. She answered to our queries and we would call her as and when required. This was basic (Continued on page 11)

Chaturthi, Eid celebrated HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, SEPT 11

Ganesh festivities began in the State today with pomp and gaiety. It was a day of double festivity as Muslims also celebrated Eid. People welcomed the arrival of Lord Ganesh in their homes with colourful decorations, bursting of fire crackers and prayers seeking His blessing for prosperity and protection from evil. Though Ganesh festival is celebrated by Hindus in the State — their ways of celebrations differ. Some follow tradition wherein they have celebration for a day-and-a-half and Ganesh idol is immersed into the nearest water body on the second day. Where as at many places celebration continues for five days and immersion takes place on the evening of the fifth day. However, more enthusiastic also have Ganesh Chaturthi for seven days and some for nine days. In the changing times awareness is growing to have environment friendly celebration by minimizing use of fire crackers. The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) had appealed people not to buy Plaster of Paris idols and against causing noise pollution.

Service to God comes first at Panjim police station! HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, SEP 11

Complaints can wait as paying obeisance to Lord Ganesha became top priority at the Panjim police which was in a preparatory mood for the beginning of the festivity on Saturday. Conrad Menezes, whose car was stripped off stereo and other valuables, which he parked at the Kala Academy parking space, on Friday evening was told at Panjim police station that they (police) can act on the complaint only on Monday. Speaking to Herald, Menezes, resident of Saligao said that he had parked Maruti Zen car bearing registration number GA-03C-0545 at about 7:30pm and walked into KA auditorium to watch “tiatr.”

On returning back at about 11pm, he saw the car bonnet was open and that speakers and gear knob were robbed. “I approached the security who expressed inability to help me saying that his duty was to ‘only’ check proper vehicle parking. He though gave a number of a security incharge named Sandeep, but yet again in vain,” said the complainant. He then moved Panjim police station with a complaint of theft against unknown men, where he was told that they can act on his case only on Monday. When Herald contacted the Panjim police, after 9pm, on Saturday the Hawaldar who attended the call said there was no such complaint as yet.

With everyone anxious to get to Goa for ‘Chovoth’, passengers have been adopting unique tactics to find place on trains coming to Goa for the festival. For some of these commuters, the 13-hour passenger train journey from Diva to Madgaon took almost 30 hours! The usually-deserted Diva Junction, near Thane, was abuzz with activity on Thursday evening. The platform was overflowing with passengers, and even more kept streaming in. Most of them wanted to go to their villages in Konkan and to Goa for the biggest festival of the year. Around Ganesh Chaturthi, the Diva-Madgaon Passenger is always packed. But this time the crowd was double, as ‘Chovoth’ coincided with Eid. To board the train, which was scheduled to leave at 6.20 am on Friday from Diva, passengers arrived at the station as early as 8.30 pm on Thursday. Almost 10,000 people with baggage and children were ready to hop onto the train when it came in from Madgaon. It arrived at 10 pm, 45 minutes

nA 13-hour journey was extended to a 30-hour adventure, but at least we got seats!” He was relieved when the train finally touched Madgaon at 8.30 pm on Friday, and he was home for Chovoth. --Santosh Parab behind schedule. Passengers who jumped onto the train as it pulled into the station, hoping to find vacant seats, were disappointed. Most of them were already occupied by those who had boarded the train at Panvel, at 9 pm. The train halts at Diva Junction till 12.30 am, then returns to Panvel and halts there till 4.45 am to fill water and recharge the power generator. Then it chugs back to Diva to pick up passengers, and finally depart for its destination, Madgaon, at

6.20 am. But at Diva Junction on Tuesday night, 10,000-odd passengers squeezed themselves into the 10 bogies whose seating capacity is not more than 2,000. A few found seats, others sat on the luggage racks or on the floor, but most passengers stood in the passageway; many of them on one leg. Then, the lights and fans in the train were shut off. In the dark, the janata was just beginning to realise that the train was infested with mosquitoes. But getting off was not an option… A few smart ones had brought mosquito coils, which they lighted till the train started moving towards Panvel after midnight. The lights and fans came on, but only till the train arrived at Panvel. They pleaded with the station master to switch on the power, but he said the lights had to be turned off to charge the power generator. At Panvel, even more commuters boarded the train, and scuffles broke out for space. At 4.45 am, the train finally left for Diva and arrived at the station at 6 am. The lights and fans came on, and passengers

heaved a high of relief. But there was a nightmare ahead. For, waiting at the station were another 10,000 passengers. Less than half managed to squeeze into the already over-packed bogies. Emergency exits were used to push kids into the compartments, followed by luggage. Even the toilets were full, and passengers were sitting on the roof. The engine driver intervened and called the police, who asked the rooftop commuters to alight. Disappointed, many passengers returned home. The jampacked Diva-Madgoan Passenger finally started rolling at 7 am. Santosh Parab of Goa, who lives in Diva, went to Panvel at 4 pm on Thursday to board the train, as it was on its way from Madgaon to Diva. It arrived at 8.30 pm, and he managed to get seats for his family. Said Parab, “A 13-hour journey was extended to a 30-hour adventure, but at least we got seats!” He was relieved when the train finally touched Madgaon at 8.30 pm on Friday, and he was home for Chovoth.

Ganesh idols to attract crowds in Marcel, Sattari HERALD CORRESPONDENT MARCEL, SEPT 11

Thousands of people will visit Marcel and nearby areas to witness the unique Ganesh idols made by various mandals during the Ganesh festival. The Ganesh idols are huge and are being made of different types of material, attracting a large crowd of devotees and curious onlookers. This year, the Vithal Sanskrit Mandal of Bazarwada-Marcel has made a two-and-half metre Ganesh idol using material from the arecanut tree. The artisans claim it took them almost a month to complete the idol. The idol will be on public display from Sunday onwards. Other mandals in the area will also exhibit their Ganesh idols from Sunday onwards, till the

21st day of the Chaturthi. Mandals from Marcel, Cumbharjua and Sant Estevem have, over the years, attracted a large crowd for their unique Ganesh idols. The large crowd has, however, resulted in undue pressure on the narrow roads. Traffic jams will be a daily routine and the traffic police will have a tough time managing the traffic. MAYEM CORRESPONDENT ADDS: Crowds have been visiting Bhuipal village of Sattari during Ganesh festival since the past five years to catch a glimpse of eco-friendly Ganesh idols. Suryakant Gaonkar, an employee of a factory at Pissurlem, has been using his creative skills to make eco-friendly Ganesh idols out of unusual ingredients.

"This year, I made a large Ganesh idol out of sawdust and it took me three weeks to complete the idol," Gaonkar told Herald. "Last year, I made use of seeds from wild trees to make my Ganesh idol and it evoked good response from the public." "I am located in the vicinity of the Sahyadri hills, where a lot of raw material is easily available for eco-friendly Ganesh idols," he added. A few years ago, Gaonkar even made a Ganesh idol of the stem of the Banana tree and the bark of other trees. Suryakant's father, Shankar, said the entire family has fully supported Suryakant in his creative abilities. The eco-friendly Ganesh idol will be on public display at Bhuipal for five days.

Make ‘Bandollem’ fit for Lord Ganesh LAwRENCE FERNANDES, SANCOALE

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the greatest festivals for our Hindu brethren, celebrated all over Goa and in many parts of India. In my village, we were surrounded by houses of Hindu families. When I was a child, I used to attend ‘poojas’ and ‘bhajans’ in neighbouring houses, which I continue till today. The most interesting thing to me is the beautiful ‘mattolli’, with lots of fruits and vegetable hanging on it and the beautiful flowers strewn around Ganapati Bappa. The fragrance of agarbatis and other essences used to make my day. And who can forget the ‘goodies’? The finale was even more interesting. We used to take part in the procession. All the household idols were gathered at one point and taken in a procession with much gaiety before immersion in the beautiful fresh water lake called ‘Bandollem’. Today, this once-upon-a-time clean ‘Bandollem’ is contaminated with human excreta, flushed out of toilets in nearby residences. Though the Sancoale Panchayat has built steps to carry the ‘murtis’ of Ganapati into the lake for ‘visarjan’, nothing has been done to stop the menace of dumping in the lake, where the God of Wisdom for Hindu believers will be immersed this week. May Lord Ganesh give wisdom to the concerned authorities to act urgently to rectify this injustice, to give Ganapati Bappa a decent immersion before the joyous cries of ‘Ganapati Bappa Morya, Fuddlea Vorsa Begineia’, are uttered this time.

Elections to rob and loot? JOEL MORAiS, CuNCOLiM

Local candidates for the Cuncolim Municipal Council elections have commenced campaigning. Some of them had donated projectors to view the recently concluded Football World Cup matches on big screens, whereas others are financing the repair of chapels, donating train tickets to visit Vailankanni, etc. Elections in recent times have become a proper profit-making business. The one and only requirement to win an election is to fool the people. You make your ‘investments’ (as above) and reap your profits (after election, by corruption). After the last Assembly election, one councillor publicly declared that he won’t be contesting the next municipal election. But this is a relatively low investment business and, if turned successful, ensures sacks of money all round. So once elected, very few want to resign and take rest, unless the people forcibly make them rest. The business yields so much profit that government servants earning a decent salary resign from service to contest municipal elections. We have witnessed a lot of so-called development in Cuncolim, but nothing compared to the ‘development’ of our elected Councillors. They have earned sacks of money. We, the people, should not give them a second chance to loot our historic village. Let us vote for a change, not because the new ones will necessarily be better, but they will take a while to learn how to rob and loot.

SUNDAY MAIL

I think Santosh Bale (‘BJP & criticism’, Herald, 9 Sept) is unaware of who burnt the Kar Sevaks and who killed the Hindu saint in Orissa. Investigations have shown that the mob outside did not set the fire in the train carrying Kar Sevaks; the blaze started inside. It was the Maoists who killed the VHP leader, but the VHP put the blame on Christians. Christians never do forcible conversions. I don’t understand why the Sangh Parivar gets excited over minor matters like exhibitions by Dr Jose Pereira and Subodh Kerkar. Don’t they have other work to do? If someone offended your Gods, let your Gods judge and punish them. Who are you to do so? Weren’t Sanatan Sanstha activists responsible for the blast at Margao last year, where they wanted to shift the blame on other religions? Why hasn’t the government taken any action against the Sanstha till date? What’s the different between saffron terror and Islamic terror?

“Weed out” BJP

Unfortunate? R FERNANDES, MARgAO

Dr Joshi calls the death of Raveena as “unfortunate” (Herald, 24 August). It could be unnecessary, tragic, criminal, but never unfortunate. In this age, death from a non-emergency case of appendicitis is unimaginable. Likening this with pay adds insult to injury. Exactly, how much is ‘enough’ for these doctors… parity with the West? Can we insist, in reverse, on zero deaths in our hospitals? The eco-friendly Ganesh idol at Bhuimpal-Sattari.

MANuEL X SOuzA, MAPuSA

Santosh Bale (‘BJP & criticism’, Herald, 9 Sept) seems to be a sympathiser of Hindutva and Manohar Parrikar. He ‘imagines’ that in Gujarat and Kandhamal, Orissa, Hindus were killed by Muslims and Christians. There is no evidence of either. But there is plenty of evidence of murders of innocent Muslims and Christians, systematically planned and executed by the Sangh Parivar. Recently, a BJP MLA from Belgaum, who studied in a Catholic institution, incited people to “weed out” Christianity from India. And a former CM of Goa, currently Leader of the Opposition, is trying to induct Christians into his fold? Is there any sincerity in such a move? Muslims, Christians and all ‘good-people’ must see that the BJP is “weeded out” completely, and given no opportunity in the forthcoming assembly elections. Let us not be fooled by the ‘too-talkative’ Parrikar.

Yesterday afternoon it was too hot for a siesta (power cut), so I drove my bike to the top of Monte Hill, to the chapel of Nossa Senhora de Piedade. My childhood friend Zezito Pereira was there, but he had a badly bruised and swollen ankle. He said he was going to Fatorda at around 10:15 am, and passed two traffic cops near Sanju Bar. A little further at the turn, a 15-year-old boy came at full speed on a scooter and rammed into his bike. A passer-by told him that police tried to stop this boy and, to avoid them, he sped on, thinking the police might follow him. They didn’t, but he banged into Zezito, injuring his left leg. This buy was given the scooter by his mother to do some shopping. His father is abroad. Just because the parents are rich, do they think they can do whatever they want, including killing or injuring innocent people?

Teachers’ Day thoughts FREDRiCK PEREiRA, PANJiM

Teachers’ Day on 5 September marks the memory of the great teacher, scholar, philosopher and former President of India Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. Though Teachers’ Day is celebrated in formal educational institutions, we ought to remember our very first teachers were our parents and other elders, from whom we have learnt so much. Equally important are friends and peers. For first generation learners, the ‘teachers’ means a lot, in mind, heart and spirit. Senior teachers have given so much to newcomers and other junior teachers, as well as to incoming and outgoing students. We also have teachers’ teachers and mentors, who also need to be remembered with a lot of reverence and gratitude on this special day. But the need of the hour is the ‘accountability’ of the entire system of education, in which the teachers occupy a prominent place. Who will set suitable parameters and implement them? Where are the administrators, heads of Institutions, the political masters, the PTA committee members and civil society to hold teachers accountable? Who will hold the persons in power accountable? Can sincere, well-meaning teachers do it, for themselves and their bosses? Is the Ministry of Education looking into this?

Davorlim residents brace up to oppose land acquisition HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, SEPT 11

With the government determined to acquire land admeasuring 1.15 lakh sq mts at Davorlim for the proposed multi-purpose utility project, Davorlim villagers are bracing up for an agitation to protect what they called as the land of their ancestors from acquisition. Government’s order to the South Goa district Collector earlier this week to acquire the land in question has stirred resentment and protests amongst the villagers. With their sustained objections to the project falling on deaf ears, the villagers now plan to take to the streets and hold protests outside the district Collectorate building. The villagers also plan to convene a special gram Sabha meeting and plan to call on the local

M L A a n d P W D M i n i s t e r, Churchill Alemao to address their genuine demand. Says a villager Antoneta, who has been in the forefront in the opposition to the project: “The villagers are fighting to protect the land from acquisition for their children. This is the only open land available in the village. Where will our children and grandchildren go if this land is acquired for government projects not benefiting the villagers”. Antonetta along her fellow villagers are contending that the Communidade land was preserved and protected by their ancestors for the generations to come. “If the government acquires the piece of land for the multi-utility projects, the villagers will have no where to go”, she asserted.

Davorlim villagers along with the Gram Sabha and Panchayat body had been opposing the project since the government notified Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act to acquire the land last year. Their pleas, however, went unheeded as evident by the fact that the government in June last notified Section 6 of the Act. That the government is firm in its resolve to acquire the land in question became crystal clear earlier this week when the district Collector was given orders under section 7 of the Land Acquisition Act to acquire the land. The Davorlim panchayat has rallied behind the villagers in their demand to scrap the land acquisition process. Deputy sarpanch sandeep Kambli said that enough is enough and that the people are now ready to

come onto the streets. “Till date, neither the government nor the district Collector have bothered to take the locals into confidence. They have not been explained what multi-utility project is all about and the projects that would come up on the acquired land”, Kambli said. Like many a villager, the deputy sarpanch said the local MLA should support the local villagers in their battle against the land acquisition proceedings. “The villagers will also call the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat as well to scrap the project”, he added. Agitated villagers say the government had initially initiated moves to acquire lush green fields for the proposed Kabrastan and has now set its sight on the barren Communidade land for ulterior motives.

Keralite found dead in Colva hotel HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, SEPT 11

A native of Kerala was found dead in a pool of blood in a Colva hotel on Saturday where he was putting up since August 13. The Colva police has registered a case of unnatural death as preliminary inquiries points towards a suspected suicide, but DySP Umesh Gaonkar said the police will investigate into all angles in the death of the Keralite. A push botton paper cutting knife was found inside the room, which was used to cause the fatal injuries on the chin of the deceased. DySP Gauncar told herald that the deceased Sunil P J was putting up at the hotel since August 13. Inquries has revealed that the hotel bill of the deceased had mounted to around Rs 28,000 and the deceased only

The hotel management told the police that since the deceased refused to open the door, which was latched from inside, hotel staff effected entry with the help of a ladder from the rear side, only to find the deceased in a pool of blood. Sources said broken glass pieces were also found inside. DySP Gauncar said though the Colva police have registered a case of unnatural death, the police would continue investigations to ascertain any foul play in the death of the native of Kerala. ‘Nirmalyas’ for clean and green Panjim HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, SEPT 11

The Corporation of the City of Panjim in association with Mission Green has requested Ganesh mandals to use its more than dozen ‘nirmalya’ pots to collect waste generated during the celebrations that will go on for the next few days. This year, besides mandaps, nirmalyas have been placed at city temples namely Mahalakshmi (on Dada Vaidya Rd), Hanum a n ( Pa t t o , A l t i n h o a n d Miramar), Ganesh (St Inez) and Ram (Bhatlem). In all 14 pots will be used during the celebrations to collect waste that will be disposed off separately keeping in mind its spiritual relevance.

Like last year volunteers of Mission Green will oversee and guide people on the importance of throwing waste into the pots in a systematic manner to pay true obeisance to Lord Ganesha. Church Square, Boca da Vaca and KTC Bus Stand are places where some of the bigger sarvajanik Ganesh mandals are situated. CCP officials have once again made a fervent appeal to people coming to the Ferry Point, the main ‘visarjan’ (immersion) point, to use the two nirmalya pots kept there to throw away dry waste and wet waste. Tomorrow one-and-a-half day Ganeshas will be immersed. Pots have been kept at Mansher in Santa Cruz and Old Patto

Bridge, the other two immersion points. The officials have urged people not to throw any other waste in the nirm a l y a p o t s a s these have been kept exclusively for Ganesh celebration days. Waste like agarbatti packets, flowers, thermocol, plastic and other decorative waste, etc., can be thrown into these, they said. Mission Green volunteers said this year too they expected cooperation from the city people so as to see a clean and green Ganesh celebration. Last year Mission Green had conducted 11 activities educating people on the need to save environment.

Belgaum could turn into tourism destination soon HERALD CORRESP9ONDENT BELGAUM, SEPT 11

People of Goa, who visit Belgaum in large numbers every day, can now think of a better weekend during their holidays in Belgaum. This is because after a rather long time, Karnataka Government has taken the development of tourism in the state very seriously. If one goes by recent declarations by Tourism Minister Janardhan Reddy, tourism in Belgaum and other parts of Karnataka would have better days. Belgaum, which is the most preferred shopping centre, may soon become a tourism hot spot too. Thus, the question raised by every Goan about where to go for sight seeing in Belgaum may soon find an answer. According to Reddy, all the districts in the state including Belgaum will soon have ‘Pravasi Soudhas’, the centres providing all information about tourist destinations and would be engaged in promoting tourism in respective district. The tourism minister recently held an important meeting with the deputy commissioners of the North Karnataka comprising Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad, Bagalkot, Gadag, Haveri and Uttar Kannada, and discussed in detail the steps to be taken in this regard. “All these seven districts coming under the Belgaum division will be given special preference in promoting tourism,” said Reddy. Speaking to media, Reddy said the state government has

raised the tourism budget from a meager Rs 15 crore to Rs 250 crore. “Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who is very much interested in promoting tourism in the state, has assured that soon the tourism budget would be doubled in the near future,” informed Reddy. Reddy also informed that Helitourism will also commence in Karnataka from the forthcoming ‘Rajyotsava’ (statehood) day on November 1, when helicopters would be pressed into service for covering the heritage circuits involving Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal. According to Reddy, every ‘Pravasi Soudha’ will have a mini theatre, conference hall and will

be manned by an officer of the state administrative cadre. The state government has already set aside Rs 100 crore to promote tourism in Belgaum division. He also said the process of developing Kittur Fort, Rajhansgad Fort and other centres of tourist importance are being developed to provide conveniences for the tourists. However, it was not clear about what steps the state government will be taking to comfort thousands of Goan tourists visiting Belgaum. It is also not clear what language will be used in the ‘Pravasi Soudhas’, as all Goans visiting Belgaum do not know Kannada.

When this ramp was built on the Curtorim side of River Zuari, hopes were raised that people would soon be able to travel to Shiroda and Sanvordem with minutes. It’s now, nearly two years and half since the ramp was built, but the promised ferry service is yet to become a reality. While the ferry ramp at Curtorim is in place since two years and half, the ramp and the approach road on the other side of the river at Mankeam at Shiroda is yet to see light of the day. A resident Sudin Sawant said a ferry service between Cur-

torim and Shiroda would narrow the travelling time to Sanvordem and Shiroda. “If we have to now travel for an hour to reach Sanvordem, the distance can be covered within 15-30 minutes if the two points are connected by a ferry service”, he added. Another resident Clemente Fernandes said that the ferry service would also benefit the residents of Macazana and Chandor and called upon the government to build the approach road to the ferry point on the Shiroda side of the river. He appealed to the Shiroda MLA Mahadev Naik to take up the work at the earliest so that the ferry service becomes a reality.

Garbage dump: an eyesore at wholesale fish market

Garbage seen occupying nearly half the road leading to the wholesale fish market. Photo by Savio Dias HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, SEPT 11

There seems to be no end to the garbage mess facing the Commercial Capital despite Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s decision to personally look into the problem. Believe it or not, more than half the road leading to the wholesale fish market at Madel was occupied by mounds of garbage. Daily visitors and vendors to the wholesale fish market had to face the double hardship of crossing the road and to contend with the waste all scattered around. City-based Citizens Welfare Committee president Savio Dias said the authorities including the Margao Municipal Council have been taking lightly the task of clearing waste dumped along the road to the wholesale fish market. He said clearance of waste

from the Madel areas of the city has been irregular in recent times, posing nuisance and a health hazard to the residents. Sources in the know said that the Madel-Davondem area of the city is the favourite dumping ground for hotel waste by

garbage contractors. Sources do not rule out the possibility of a collusion between garbage contractors and unscrupulous elements in the civic body emboldening the contractors to dump waste in the jurisdiction of the civic body.

A teacher is like a lighthouse, which shows the right path to people in darkness, stated Alexander Fernandes, president, in his welcome address. “This is not an easy task. An effective teacher must be a good communicator, a fair evaluator, an adept manager, a strict disciplinarian and even a surrogate parent. Only by wearing all of these hats will the teacher be able to elicit the best from his or her students,” Alexander pointed out. Alexander pointed out that a teacher who walks into the classroom and reads from a book for an hour isn't an effective teacher. A good teacher will strike the right chord with the students and have a sixth sense about

those who need more help. One must feel the pulse of a classroom and modify the teaching methods to maintain a high level of interest, no matter what the subject is, he added. The teachers were presented awards by Abijeet Salkar, region chairperson, who was on an official visit to the club. Abijeet highlighted the stellar role being played by the teachers in taking India to greater heights of progress and glory. All parties should accept verdict on Ayodhya title suit: CPM PTI CHANDIGARH, SEPT 11

The CPI(M) today said that all parties should accept the court verdict on the Ayodhya title suit to be pronounced later this month as talks have failed to resolve the issue. "All sections should accept the court verdict, whatever it may be. Only a judicial order can resolve the Ayodhya issue as negotiations have failed," CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat told reporters here. The Allahabad High Court will pronounce its verdict on September 24 on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit. "We feel that to settle the issue all parties should accept the court verdict as talks have failed to resolve the issue. Whatever the judgement may be, it should be accepted by all. The dissatisfied party can approach the Supreme Court," Karat said. Demanding that the govern-

ment distribute free food grains to the poor, he said that though Punjab and other areas in North India were reeling under floods following heavy rains, many other areas in the country, including Bihar, were facing drought. "We demand that the Supreme Court order on free distribution of food grains rotting in the godowns of the FCI should be implemented. The foodgrains should at least be distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS) in the drought affected areas of Bihar and other states," he said. Karat said that his party did not agree with the Centre's assertion that the farmers will suffer due to free distribution of food grains. "The farmers have already got their price as the food grains has been procured by the central agencies after making payments to the farmers," he said. Replying to a question, he

said that the party agreed with the Prime Minister's assertion that the Supreme Court should not interfere in executive's domain of policy making, but he added that the apex court order on food grain distribution has come following the failure of the public distribution system. "When the rats are eating the food in the FCI godowns, why can't it be distributed under the PDS to the poor and those living in drought-hit areas," the Left leader questioned. Karat charged the UPA government at the Centre with failing to act against Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee whose Trinamool Congress had forged what he described as an "unholy alliance" in West Bengal to oust the CPI(M) from power in assembly elections in the state. "It is regrettable that Mamta openly participated in a Maoist rally at Lalgarh on August 7, but the UPA government kept

Toll in Kerala hooch tragedy rises to 26 PTI MALAPPURAM, SEPT 11

Few more people, who had consumed the illicit brew are still undergoing treatment at the Medical college hospital, sources said. The Excise Commissioner S Subbaiah, who had visited Vaniyambalam in Vandoor, couple of days earlier, had said that the preliminary report on the incident would be submitted to the government on September 13. DGP says probe in right direction PTI MALAPPURAM (KER), SEPT 11

The police enquiry into the illicit toddy tragedy in Malappuram district was moving in the right direction, Director General of Police Jacob Punnoose, said today. Speaking to mediapersons after he had a review meeting with top police officials including the crime branch oficials, who has been entrusted with the probe, he said that the police were able to find out the people behind the tragedy in quick time. He said the probe will also find out whether any officials had indirectly involved in the incident. Police will take stringent steps to see that such incidents never happened again in the state, he said. To a query on the handing over of the probe to crime branch, he said there is the need for continuously conducting a comprehensive enquiry, he said, adding the local body elections are coming and the local police will be engaged. However, the police enquiry so far has been moving in the right direction, he said, adding the crime branch enquiry will be conducted with their (police) cooperation. Another reason for entrusting the enquiry to the crime branch was that the probe might be spread to other parts of the state and also outside the state, he said. nounced a judicial probe by a sitting High Court judge into the tragedy. quite even though one of its ministers shared the stage with the Maoists," he said. "How can the government and the Prime Minister tolerate this?" He said that the CPI(M) would launch a countrywide campaign from tomorrow on the issue. "The Centre should explain how it is tolerating its minister supporting the Maoists who have indulged in violence against the CPM cadres," Karat said. "On one hand it sends the central Paramilitary forces to assist the state police in tackling the Maoist problem and on the other hand a central minister shares the stage with these very Maoists," he said. Karat opposed Union Cabinet’s move to have a caste census ext year. "We do not want a general cast census. We are for enumerating the other back ward classes in the same manner in which SC/ST are done," he said.

Sleeping pilot crashed aircraft at Mangalore HERALD BUREAU NEW DELHI, SEPT 11

The Serbian pilot commanding the Air India Express aircraft from Dubai that crashed at the Mangalore airport on May 22 killing 158 was asleep in the cockpit for 90 minutes and did not respond to at least six warnings by the in-built cockpit alarms, the inquiry committee headed by Air Marshal (Retd) B N Gokhale was told early this week. The analysis of the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) presented to the inquiry committee revealed the sound of "nasal snoring and breathing" indicating that the commander pilot was sleeping during the flight. The analysis also of CVR and Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) of the flight that tumbled into the gorge showed that the plane's "sink rate" was very high and yet six warn-

ings emitted by the automatic alarms in the cockpit were ignored. The Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA), aircraft manufacturer Boeing and GE Aviation told the inquiry committee that the two recorders showed that the flight approach to the airport was not stabilised and yet commander Captain Z Glucika brought down the aircraft ignoring repeated alarm. The recording showed that co-pilot Harbinder Singh Ahluwalia call to his senior to "better go around" and then warning him about "less runway left" since the aircraft had overshot. The pilot had violated the speed, glide angle and descent parameters, landing at high speed with too little space left on the runway and then tried to take off without sufficient spooling, the inquiry committee was told.

Bihar set to witness Sacked college lecturer to First Gujarati website on kidney ailments to be launched triangular fight approach Appellate Tribunal PTI PATNA, SEPT 11

As Bihar gears up for the coming assembly polls and battle lines are being drawn, it promises to be a triangular affair with Congress deciding to contest all 243 seats on its own. The other two camps are the JD(U)-led NDA and the RJD-LJP alliance. Congress has never made it alone since 1995, though it did enjoy power as an ally of Lalu Prasad's RJD twice. In 1995 when undivided Bihar witnessed a one-to-one fight between the party and Lalu Prasad-led Janata Dal, Congress contested in all but one out of the 324 seats and secured just 29. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's fledgling Smata Party was formed just before the polls and BJP was not a force to be reckoned with. In the next polls the grand old party contested all the 324 and won 23 cutting into the votes of the BJP. It went on to support the Rabri Devi government and reaped good benefit by having 22 ministers. The remaining Congress MLA was made the speaker. The tough fight given by then BJP-JD(U) alliance came to a naught as the minority government led by Nitish Kumar fighting shy of confidence vote quit and the socalled secular forces rallied behind RJD, leading to the formation of the RJD-Congress government. In the two subsequent assembly elections in February 2005 and October-November 2005, which saw a brief of period of central rule, the Congress fought in a virtual alliance with the RJD from 84 and 51 seats, respectively, but won only 10 and nine seats. Kumar led the NDA to power in November 2005.

AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi has kick-started the campaign on a quick trip to Bihar. "We will bring Congress government in both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh ... Bihar will progress only under a Congress government," he had said. Congress is eyeing the Muslim vote-bank in the state and has raised questions about Kumar's secular credentials accusing him of maintaining a double face on the relationship with BJP and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Modi, the party said, did not campaign in the last Assembly polls in Bihar but shortly after the election was over Kumar was sighted with Modi holding his hands at an NDA rally in Punjab. Moreover, Kumar had continued as union minister in the Vajpayee government even after the Gujarat riots. It has also questioned the Nitish Kumar government’s track record in implementing minority-related programmes and utilisation of funds. Kumar has hit back holding the Congress responsible for the state's backwardness. ''The Congress has neglected Bihar for 63 years and has not done justice to its people.'' Prasad has on the other hand alleged that Congress was contesting all the 243 seats in the bifurcated state to allow NDA reap electoral benefits. ''It is not a potent force, but is just trying to get its foothold,” he says. What has come as a shot in the arm for Congress is that its vote percentage has shot up to over 13 per cent in the last Lok Sabha polls from a meagre five per cent in the 2005 assembly elections. The figure further rose to about 15 per cent in last year's by-elections to 18 assembly constituencies.

PTI KOCHI, SEPT 11

Lecturer T J Joseph, whose right hand was chopped off allegedly by activists of a radical outfit, has decided to approach the University Appellate Tribunal after the dioceses backed his sacking by his college and blamed him for an "irresponsible act". With the church-run Newman college management unrelenting despite the university's directive to revoke the dismissal order, Joseph's sister Stella said her brother has decided to approach the tribunal for reinstating him. "I do not want do anything against the Catholic church. But the college management is forcing me to go to the tribunal," Stella said quoting Joseph. Even after getting his dismissal order, Joseph had written to the college management to pardon him. "He has touched the feet of the Bishop and the manager of the college seeking pardon," she told PTI. Amid public outcry against

the college's action, Bishop of the dioceses George Punnakottil said the college was accused of being an accomplice in hurting the religious feelings of Muslims and its management had to take a decision to distance itself from the act of Joseph. In a pastoral letter which would be read out in the churches during Sunday mass tomorrow, he said the attack on Joseph did not nullify the "crime" committed by him, but such an "irresponsible act" cannot be expected from the lecturer. "We stand for secularism and we do not want to offend anybody," the bishop said, adding Joseph can approach court and the management would abide by its decision. Stella, a nun, said she had also met the Bishop on July 2, before the attack, on behalf of her brother. The family is also upset by the pastoral letter written by Kothamangalam Bishop against Joseph. Stella said the entire

family was "upset and scared". Joseph is slowly recovering after his right hand was chopped off allegedly by radical outfit Popular Front of India on July four for preparing a question paper which contained some alleged derogatory references to Prophet Mohammed. The lecturer is now undergoing physiotherapy, she said. The Syndicate of the Mahatma Gandhi University has found that the action against the lecturer was "gross violation of procedures" and asked the management to take appropriate further steps in accordance with law, justice and equity." Stella said the management was aware of the threat to Joseph but had failed to inform them. 'If the family had been informed, we would have taken police protection or moved off to a safer place', she said, adding, the management knew about the threat to his life. "Why did they not inform the family?"

Garo council suspension a political ploy: BJP PTI SHILLONG, SEPT 11

Terming the suspension of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) as a political ploy of Congress, BJP unit of Meghalaya today said NCP, which claims majority, should have been allowed to form the executive committee of GHADC. "When NCP has paraded 18 of the 30 members of the district council before the governor, they should have been asked to form the council and prove the majority in the

house. Under what circumstances, Congress government has extended the animated suspension of GHADC by another six months," BJP general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty said. He said chief minister's explanation that the government has extended the administrator rule in GHADC due to financial irregularities in the council sounded ridiculous. Meghalaya government has extended suspended animation of GHADC by another six months and decided to institute an inquiry commission to

probe the "gross financial and appointment anomalies" in the district council. The cabinet also decided not to facilitate the installation of the executive committee (EC) of the council but extend the animated suspension of the council, which was due to expire on September 30, by six months. BJP also urged the chief minister to immediately see that the fund for the payment of arrears of the deficit school teachers are released at the earliest.

South Delhi continued to be worst-affected this season recording 283 cases, followed by MCD Central Zone (234) and Civil Lines (219). The civic bodies are blaming incessant rains and stagnation of water at Games construction sites for the rapid increase in dengue cases this season.

Nearly one crore people in the country are facing various kidney related problems. In Saurashtra, there would be over 80,000 people having kidney problems, he said. opinionated Parts of Delhi flooded as Yamuna Racism in reverse

By IAN WATSON

PTI NEW DELHI, SEPT 11

was amused and bemused by the letter ‘Cry My Beloved Goa’ which was published on Tuesday 7 September. Bemused because the writer seemed to be expressing racist views, and amused because of his surname, which in view of recent political events in Goa, appeared to be quite ironic and possibly one that should not be declared too freely at the moment. But such racist views would be severely censured in the UK, with probable court proceedings for racial discrimination. I cannot understand his rants when such comments can adversely affect the tourist trade in Goa and, therefore, the livelihood of so many people. As a British expat living in Goa, I would like to make some points, as I take strong exception to his implications. We are self-supporting, spending money we have earned, saved or now obtain from company or government pensions, because we have been hard-working and have planned ahead for the time when we cannot or will not be able to work any more. Most expats are retired and do not take the jobs of local people. Some have businesses and provide a good working wage to their employees, who usually prefer working for a British employer than an Indian employer, as they get paid more and are treated better. Furthermore, many businesses prefer to employ non-Goan staff, as many employers say that Goans generally are lazy and unreliable. Sorry, but it’s true. When I had a business in Goa, I employed three local lads. One was the best employee you could ever hope to have anywhere in any country. Another needed constant reminders about punctuality and attention to duty, and the third was a lazy, lying drunk who was soon shown the way out. Most of us rent properties because of the regulations regarding ownership. We provide income, monsoon season included, for landlords, shops, bars and taxi drivers. We do not agitate or voice our religious or political opinions, as we accept that we are guests in another country and it is not our place to do so. Accordingly, we do not organise political, religious or racist rallies, and do not commit violence associated with political, religious or racist opinions. We do not create ghettos and make them no-go places for others. Many of us came here year after year on holiday, before we decided we would like to live here as we fell in love with the Goan people. But let's look at the reverse side of the coin from his comments. The UK is the immigration capital of the world, because of the lenient laws and the attractive benefit system. Benefits paid to immigrants and so-called asylum-seekers cost the British taxpayer billions of pounds a year. That is why so many risk their lives paying money to ‘fixers’ to get a ride hanging on under a lorry or inside refrigerated containers, to gain access to the UK via ferries or the Channel Tunnel. The UK is the ‘Soft Centre’. If they are not detected, they go into hiding in a community of their own, and are taught how to make false benefit claims. In most major cities, immigrants take over entire areas to make a ‘Little Bombay’ or a ‘Chinatown’. There is no problem as far as the restaurant and shopping side of this goes, but when they start implementing their own laws and justice system, and the Police authorities decide that for their own safety they will stand back until something ‘serious’ happens, then I have to wonder. Young people in the UK cannot afford to buy homes unless they receive financial help from their parents. Local government provides housing at low rent or free for the hundreds of thousands of immigrants and ‘asylum seekers’ who enter the UK each year by legal or illegal means. Less houses means increased prices, and it is commonplace for young couples to have to wait until they are in their thirties before they can save enough for the deposit on a property, never mind afford the mortgage repayments. Finally, some statistics to consider. Facts, not racism. In 1998-99, over 350,000 people from the Asian subcontinent emigrated to the UK. In the 2001 UK census, nearly 5 per cent of the population of the UK was of Asian origin. In 2009, the most popular name for a baby boy in the UK was ‘Jack’, and the second most popular, ‘Mohammad’!

The rising Yamuna flooded several parts of the capital today as the water level climbed two metres above the danger mark, threatening to submerge more low-lying areas. The water level in the river rose to 206.70 metre at 12:30 pm, 1.87 metre above the danger mark of 204.83 metre and is likely to go up further as neighbouring Haryana would release more water in the river, a senior official of the flood control department said. Haryana is expected to release 30,000 cusecs of water in to the Yamuna today. Authorities said the water level in the river is expected to rise to 206.85 metre by 2 pm. Some low-lying areas near the river, including Garhi Mandu, Usmanpur Pusta, Jagatpur Village and Shastri Nagar, were inundated by the rising water. Areas near the ISBT were also flooded, prompting thousands of people to stake shelter in government relief camps and in higher areas.

Kissing on screen lands Emraan in trouble with wife AGENCIES NEW DELHI, SEPT 11

Emraan Hashmi, better known with for his serial kisser tag, amazed everyone when he didn't kiss in his last film ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai’ and yet it became one of the biggest hits of his career till date. But just after a sabbatical from kissing, Emraan is back to what he does the best and in a more grand fashion as he goes international with his kissing this time. On being asked how his wife reacts to his onscreen image, as Emraan is a married man, blessed with a seven month old baby boy now, Emraan says- "Well I do get slapped around by my wife always after she comes out of the first screenings of my films. Obviously I expect her not to understand but she knows that these are my professional decisions which I have to comply with. Well I am awaiting my quota of slaps after she watches ‘Crook.’

The actor will be seen romancing a 'Firang' (Foreign Girl) and simultaneously Neha Sharma, the costar, in his next film ‘Crook- It's Good To Be Bad’, which releases on October 8 all over. However his track in the film with the blond girl has some real intimate scenes which are also very much visible in the promos that have been released so far. The Kisser boy is back with a bang and after romancing the Indian girls on screen, it seems that Emraan is now taking it a step further by spicing it up on the celluloid with the foreign actresses too. So can we say that a 'Brand Kiss' is what is Hashmi evolving? Well let's wait and watch..... cautionary measures are being put into place to meet any eventuality. "There is no need to worry. We are taking all precautionary measures to deal with any eventuality. The situation is under control," Dikshit had said. Authorities had yesterday evacuated hundreds of people living in the low-lying areas. Seventy-four boats and 68 divers have also been pressed into service. Over 100 personnel from National Disaster Response Force, have been deployed to assist the local authorities. Citizens of Belgaum have urged the Architectural Survey of India (ASI) to protect the historical Belgaum Fort from encroachments within the vicinity of the fort walls. Shocked by the action of the Income Tax department, which has taken up the esplanade area next to the fort wall for the construction of offices and staff quarters, the citizens have dashed a letter to Director General of ASI against the construction alongside the rampart walls of the historic Belgaum Fort. Several organisations have also protested against the move to erect a permanent construction within the vicinity of the fort. Stating that the Belgaum Fort is as vital a part of Belgaum’s heritage as is the Red Fort to Delhi, Rajeev Topannavar of ‘Belgaum Next’ said the people of Belgaum shall be ‘lastingly grateful to the ASI if the authority could kindly come to the rescue

Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia has written letters to Chief Justices of all High Courts to work out the modalities for transferring some of the judges from the states. Highly placed sources said the development is at a nascent stage and the views of Chief Justices of High Courts have been sought as the transfer of judges has been contemplated in "public interest". "The entire exercise has been undertaken in public interest," the sources said but refused to give specific reasons as to why such a step was being taken. It is understood that the CJI may have taken the step in the wake of charges that have been made against some of the judges. The letter by CJI was written ten days ago in which he asked the Chief Justices to get response from the judges about the preference of the High Court where they would like to be transferred.

n It is understood that the CJI may have taken the step in the wake of charges that have been made against some of the judges. The sources said keeping in view the present composition of the judges in 21 High Courts, it has been decided to relocate around 20 judges. Information available suggest that there are three judges each from the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Madras High Court while two from the Delhi High Court whose names have been recommended for transfer. After getting the response of the High Court Chief Justices and judges, the Supreme Court collegium consisting of the CJI and four senior most judges will forward its recommendation to the Law Ministry.

HRD Ministry should focus on school education: Digvijay PTI JABALPUR, SEPT 11

A man and his children with their essentials on their way to find safer place after Haryana released water from Hathinikund Barrage, in New Delhi on Saturday.

After his potshots at Home Minister P Chidambaram, Congress leader Digvijay Singh today appeared to snipe at HRD Minister Kapil Sibal seeking his attention on school education rather than higher education. "The need at the moment is that the HRD Ministry should pay more attention to the development of school education and skill development centres rather than higher education and I have full faith that they will look into the matter," Singh said. Sibal has become the fresh target of Singh after he took on Chidambaram, attacking his strategy to tackle Maoists. He had even called Chidambaram "intellectually arrogant". Earlier this week, Sibal had hit back at his detractors, who had accused him of rushing an education bill, by invoking Rajiv Gandhi and said the former

run Newman college management to sack Prof T J Joseph, for allegedly preparing a question paper which hurt the sentiments of a community, the Kothamanagalam Bishop has issued a pastoral letter which would be read out in the churches during Sunday mass tomorrow. The letter, however, states that aggrieved lecturer can approach the court to redress his grievance and the management would abide by the court's decision. Prof Joseph was brutally attacked by the activists of radical outfit, Popular Front of India (PFI) for preparing the questioning paper by hacking his right arm. The lecturer, who was suspended by the management as controversy broke regarding the question paper, is yet to recover completely from the attack on July 4 as he was returning home from church with his family after Sunday mass. In the letter, Bishop of Kothamanagalam Dioceses George Punnakottil said the attack does not nullify the 'crime' com-

cused of being an accomplice in hurting the religious feelings of the Muslim community. So the management had to take a decision to distance itself from the act of the lecturer, it said. “We stand for secularism and we do not want to offend anybody,” the bishop said. The letter gives a clear message to the community that the college will not tolerate any action to wound the religious feelings of another community. Meanwhile, police arrested and removed about 30 activists of the Joint Christian Council, an anti-church forum, who took out a procession at Kothamanagalam in Ernakulam district demanding the reinstatement of Prof Joseph. Though the activists first tried to take out the march from the R C Cathedral, the church did not permit the same. They then took out the march from a little distance away and raised slogans against the church and sought reinstatement of Prof Joseph, police sources said.

The Uttar Pradesh police is banking on community policing to nip any possible communal flare up post September 24 Allahabad High Court verdict on Ayodhya title suit. "There is no naxal activity in the state in the past five years due to success of community policing formula. For the first time, we are going to experiment it in the entire state by involving all the sections of the society to maintain law and order after High Court verdict on Ayodhya title suit," Additional Director General Law and Order Brij Lal told PTI. During meetings to review security arrangements across the state by Principal Secretary Home, Director General of Police and the ADG, officials in districts have been asked to bank on peoples' support as police cannot reach "everywhere anytime". "There are government employees, teachers, retired per-

sons in every area and with their support we can check occurrence of any anti-social activities," the ADG said. A communication diary has been prepared in every district having number of credible and responsible persons of the area, who can help police, he said. The senior officers randomly make a call to these persons and remind them of their duty to help police and maintain communal harmony, he said, adding that the support they were getting was enthusiastic. The diary also included name of local "dharm gurus" including maulanas and pujaris of temples and village heads to issue appeals to maintain peace and communal brotherhood, the ADG said, claiming that the idea would certainly click. The civil security committees have also been constituted at all the village and mohalla level for keeping an eye on the situation and alert the force in case of any trouble, he added.

of the Belgaum Fort which is in its hour of peril.’ “Understandably, there is turmoil in the city and people feel that our heritage is in danger. The Fort, which saved us for many centuries, needs to be saved from official vandalism,” urged Rajeev. “All the citizens of Belgaum are shocked, saddened and dismayed that the concerned authorities have handed over the esplanade area of the Fort, along with all the land along the eastern rampart walls to the Income Tax Office, which is using JCB’s to dig up the ‘skirts’ of the Fort and build an absolutely hideous three-storied Income Tax office and even more atrocious staff quarters, all within 20 mtrs of the wall of the Fort,” stated Rajeev in his letter. “This will reduce our Fort to a mere outhouse of the Income Tax office and its historic walls will become a urinal for the staff quarter residents,” added Rajeev. As per the historical records, Belgaum Fort is one of the oldest forts in Karantaka and was orig-

inally built in the beginning of the 13th century by the Ratta’s after which it was fortified by Yakub Ali Khan of Bijapur Sultanate. The Fort is commemorated by the temple to Goddess Durga at the Fort’s main gate, while its long association with the Bijapur Sultanate finds expression in Safa Masjid, built on the IndoSaracenic style, which the ASI allows access to only on two Eids. The famous Kamal Basti inside the Fort stands as the splendid example of the ancient Jain architecture. The colonial period is captured in the beautifully laid out teak and laterite bungalows in the Fort. It had a magnificent wooden Church by the main gate, which, unfortunately got burnt down. As the saga goes, Belgaum Fort felt the ramification of the valiant rebellion of Rani Chenamma of Kittur. In 1857, two Sepoy mutinees broke out within the Fort while Sepoy Munshi and Sepoy Manipal Singh were hung in the Fort along with their col-

leagues for plotting a rebellion against the British. Another renowned freedom fighter, Bhaskar Rao Bhave alias Babasaheb Nargundkar, was tried in the Fort and sentenced to a public hanging on Haystacks Hill. On June 16, 1858, he was publicly executed, whereupon all the womenfolk of his family threw themselves into a well. Thus, the stirring history of the fort adds to the greatest pride of the people of Belgaum and is an epitome of Belgaum’s rich heritage. It also may be noted that negligence by the authorities is taking its own toll as the weeds and saplings have grown all along the wall while the strong fortification around has caved in at some places due to heavy rains. “Hence, there is an utter need for the people of Belgaum region to join hands to protect this splendid testimonial that stands witness to the history of the region. Please advise us on our rights to protect and preserve our heritage,” Rajeev has stated in his letter.

Prime Minister had desired that the task of imparting quality education should be achieved in a few months. "If people say that we are in a hurry, then I would like to state that Rajivji had said it in 1985 that this should be achieved in a few months," Sibal had said at a function in the

presence of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. Sibal's remarks were seen as an apparent rebuff to detractors like K Keshav Rao, who had attacked the policies of the HRD Ministry in a debate in the Rajya Sabha that forced the government to defer the Education Tribunal Bill.

Laden has gone underground, says Obama PTI WASHINGTON, SEPT 11

On the eve of the anniversary of September 11 deadly terror strikes on US, President Barack Obama said American forces were in pursuit of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and his deputy who had been forced to go "deep underground". A relentless pressure is on in the Af-Pak region to hunt down the world's most wanted terrorist, the president said as he warned Americans to be prepared to face expanded terror threat for years to come from other al-Qaeda cadres. Declaring that US authorities were no less determined to kill or capture the man behind the September 11 attacks, Obama speaking to reporters in the White House said US fight was with al-Qaeda not with Muslims. Saturday, he said, should not only be a day to mourn but to show "we not at war against Islam, we are at war against terrorists that have distorted Islam or falsely used the banner of Islam to engage in mindless and destructive acts." "One of the things that we've been very successful at over the last two years is to ramp up the pressure on al Qaeda and their key leaders," Obama said. "As a consequence, they have been holed up in ways that have made it harder for them to operate." "And part of what's happened is, is bin Laden has gone deep underground. Even Zawahiri, who is more often out there, has been much more cautious," Obama said. He said capturing or killing bin Laden and Zawahiri would be extremely important to our national security. "It doesn't solve all our problems, but it remains a high priority of this administration," Obama said.

Mumbai II could trigger Indo-Pak war: think tank PTI WASHINGTON, SEPT 11

As US observes the ninth anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks, a reputed Washington-based research group today warned that a repeat of 26/11 strikes may lead to a "fullblown" Indo-Pak war. Preventing Mumbai-II from occurring remains a major foreign policy challenge for the US, the report said. "One of the more predictable foreign policy challenges of the next years is a 'Mumbai II': a

large-scale attack on a major Indian city by a Pakistani militant group that kills hundreds," said the 42-page report from the Bipartisan Policy Centre's National Security Preparedness Group, a Washington based research group. Authored by Peter Bergen and Bruce Hoffman, the report "Assessing the Terrorist Threat" appreciated the considerable restraint shown by India in its reaction to the provocation of the Mumbai attacks in 2008. "Another such attack, how-

ever, would likely produce considerable political pressure on the Indian government to 'do something'. That something would likely involve incursions over the border to eliminate the training camps of Pakistani militant groups with histories of attacking India," the report said. "That could lead in turn to a full-blown war for the fourth time since 1947 between India and Pakistan," it said. "Such a war involves the possibility of a nuclear exchange

and the certainty that Pakistan would move substantial resources to its eastern border and away from fighting the Taliban on its western border, so relieving pressure on all the militant groups based there, including al-Qaeda," said the report. Over a three-day period in late November 2008, Lashkare-Taiba (LeT) carried out multiple attacks in Mumbai targeting fivestar hotels housing Westerners, as well as a Jewish-American community centre, it noted. Additional incidents involved

the Pakistan-born US citizen David Headley (who had changed his name from Daood Sayed Gilani). Headley's reconnaissance efforts on behalf of LeT were pivotal to the attacks in Mumbai, the report said. "Last year he also planned an operation to kill those responsible for the 2005 publication in a Danish newspaper of cartoons of Prophet Mohammed, which many Muslims had deemed to be offensive," the report said.

Collective security ideal losing ground: Kissinger REUTERS GENEVA, SEPT 11

Nuclear diplomacy on North Korea and Iran has achieved nothing because national assertiveness has undermined the collective security ideal on which it is based, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said. In a speech to a conference of the International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank, he said yesterday efforts to rally joint action on sanctions was undermined by countries, in particular in Asia, calculating their interests on a more individual basis. ''A decade of UN-backed negotiations on Korea and Iran has produced no significant results, much less an end to

Iranian or Korean pro grammes,'' the veteran former architect of US foreign policy told the meeting of military officers and strategists. ''It becomes a method used by proliferators to gain time. Negotiations on proliferation and sanctions come to be defined by their attainability, not by their consequences. In this manner collective security begins to undermine itself.'' The West is concerned that Iran may be trying to develop an atomic weapon, which Tehran denies, and several rounds of UN sanctions have been imposed to persuade the Iranian leadership to back down and halt sensitive activity.

Iran cancels release of US hiker

REUTERS CANBERRA, SEPT 11

Iran has abruptly cancelled plans to release one of the American hikers detained for more than a year in Tehran after judicial officials cited unresolved legal issues. The status of Sarah Shourd remained in doubt Saturday following reports from Iran's ILNA news agency, quoting chief prosecutor Jafari Dolatabadi that said judicial procedures in her case have not been finished. The IRNA state news agency said the postponement was also confirmed by a spokesman in the office of P re s i d e n t M a h m o u d A h madinejad, who said details would be announced later. Shourd and two other Americans, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, were taken into custody on July 31, 2009, and subsequently accused of spying and illegal entry. The three insist they walked into Iranian territory by accident and are not involved in espionage.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard unveiled her new cabinet today, with Wayne Swan retaining his treasury portfolio and former climate minister Penny Wong moved to the senior finance portfolio. Gillard also kept Martin Ferguson in the key resources and energy portfolio, where he will be crucial to pushing through plans for a 30 percent tax on the profits of big iron ore and coal mines. In other changes, former union leader Greg Combet was promoted into a cabinet position as Minister for Climate Change to replace Wong. Combet, a political troubleshooter known for his negotiating skills, faces the task of drawing up a plan to put a price on carbon pollution, blamed for global warming, and finding community consensus for action against climate change. The new ministry is Gillard's first chance to put her stamp on the government since the ruling Labor Party dumped former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in late June, as she made only minor changes to the cabinet ahead of the August 21 national elections. Gillard last week secured a second term in office in the aftermath of last month's close election with the support of three independents and a Green MP. Hers will be the first minority government since World War

Following this, Delhi CBI-ACB sleuths flew down to Goa for a thorough investigation even as the former minister’s house at Betalbatim was twice raided leading to freezing of bank accounts and seizure of mobile phones. Earlier, officials who quizzed Mickky were heard saying that America had taken strict cognizance of the racket from India after few Indians were found entering US without valid documents. In his statement, Mickky claimed that the agency has sent 200-odd Goans overseas for jobs after checking their credentials. Jordan and Japan have signed an agreement on civilian nuclear energy cooperation in the ninth such accord made by the kingdom, the official Petra news agency reported. It said the deal covers "the exploration for and exploitation of uranium, the construction and operation of nuclear reactors, as well as the protection of the environment from radiation." Jordan's Atomic Energy Commission chief Khaled Tukan was quoted as saying that Amman wished to "profit from Japanese experience." "The agreement will allow Japan to export to Jordan technology for the civilian use of nuclear energy," Tukan said, adding that Jordan hoped to sign a similar accord with the United States.

Two, raising concerns the administration will be unstable and may not run its full term. In a bid to heal some of the internal tensions over her move against Rudd, Gillard gave the former prime minister the senior role of Foreign Minister in her new government. Former Foreign Minister Stephen Smith was moved to defence, where he will be responsible for policy on Afghanistan, where Australia has around 1,600 troops. Former Small Business Minister Craig Emerson becomes Trade Minister. By bringing back Rudd, Gillard has stuck to her pre-election pledge to give him a senior ministry. Rudd, a former diplomat was ousted from party leadership by Gillard on June 24, said after the announcement was made that he felt honoured to take on his new role. The key portfolio of finance was given to Senator Penny Wong, while the deputy prime minister Wayne Swan would continue as treasurer. Australia's new government is expected to be sworn in early next week in Canberra by Governor General Quentin Bryce. Gillard had said on Friday "Kevin's status as a former party leader and his undoubted capacity meant he is deserving of a senior portfolio where the government can best use his skills. His experience and intense interest in foreign affairs makes this the obvious choice."

BY CHRISTINA VIEGAS HERALD FEATURES or Indians and Pakistanis, very few sporting moments can compare to the moving speeches by the tennis Indo-Pak Express, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna after their final match at the US Open, played on the eve of the 9/11 terror attacks’ ninth anniversary. This talented duo en route to hopefully many highs in their tennis career might have ended runners-up for the Grand Slam title, but they surely stole hearts, not just in India and Pakistan, but in America and many other countries too. And to add more support to this significant sporting event was the presence of the United Nations ambassadors from India (Hardeep Suri) and Pakistan (Abdullah H Haroon), who sat together in the stands to cheer the duo, akin to many Indians and Pakistanis who huddled together to cheer this tennis pair in their previous matches. These wonderful young, towering six footers believe in themselves and in each other. They have confessed to trusting each other completely, though they understand each other’s weaknesses while simultaneously appreciating each other’s strengths. The Pakistani also went on to post an update on his Facebook account where he had described his partner as my ‘brother from another mother’. With their wish for world peace, what is endearing is the fact that somehow the successful partnering of this talented duo reaffirms an old truth that we were one and till today our hearts beat for each other and if we are together, no one can conquer us. Now looking within: what an amazing day September 11th was in India! The celebration of two of the greatest festivals of the Hindus and Muslims, Ganesh Chaturthi and Eid-ul-Fitr, on one common day. The bonding, sharing and caring between these two communities is exemplary in Goa as also in various other pockets in the country where they live together in complete harmony. In fact, last year I was fortunate to be sitting at the table of a lovely Muslim family from Mapusa. And sharing this same table with us was another Hindu family. The camaraderie was excellent. The ladies serving us took meticulous care in inquiring as to what we can eat and what not. Often, the Muslims even go to the extent of

preparing special vegetarian dishes for their Hindu friends, while the Hindus get so apologetic to the Muslims and Christians when they cannot serve non-vegetarian dishes and they even offer to purchase the same from a restaurant. Such is the care and concern for each other! On the flip side, there are those that want to lament that pictures appearing in the dailies, of Muslims and Hindus partaking of each other’s religious activities is doctored or stagemanaged. Why can’t those few people understand that whatever it is, it is to promote peace and harmony among religions? And the fact remains, that there is excellent intermingling of various communities in various regions of both India and Pakistan. In fact, communal harmony was indoctrinated in me even before I understood the phrase. A sharp memory crops up! While I was just a little girl in standard three, I happened to have two best friends – Sarah (Muslim) and Archana (Hindu). For our convent school concert, we were overjoyed to be chosen to perform. We were surprised as it involved all three of us, hardly comprehending the fact that it was because we were three best friends belonging to three different religions. We were made to dress as brides from our respective religions, which got us over the moon. As we shimmered in our bridal outfits like Christmas trees, we glowed in the attention bestowed on us from envious classmates. And finally on stage, we were made to read a verse each from our respective religious books and made to hold hands and sway to a beautiful hymn of unity. Way back then, it was just an important day of feeling like celebrities but today, the significance of that beautiful bonding devoid of any religious barrier, remains an important lesson picked up early in life and embedded in my very soul. For the sake of peace and joy, may there be many more like the Indo-Pak Express who are living evidence to breaking barriers.

BY DOLCY D’CRUZ HERALD FEATURES hen we hear the song ‘Bandra Festak’ by H Britton, we relive the time he spent at that fair, with the beautiful colours, channawalas selling hot channas, plateful of sorpotel and sausages and the merry-go-round rides. Most importantly, he was singing about his experience about the Bandra Feast, the feast of Mount Mary also known as Our Lady of the Mount. The church is one of the most visited churches in the city; every September, the feast is celebrated on a Sunday following the birthday of Virgin Mary on September 8. This year, this feast is being celebrated today, September 12. The shrine attracts people from all faiths who pray to the statue for thanksgiving or requesting of favours. The entire vicinity of the church has a festive look with the stalls selling different items erected during the feast days; these stalls stay put long after the feast. Like the Old Goa feast, even this feast attracts the ailing and sick for healing and stalls selling religious articles, wax figures of the Virgin Mary along with an assortment of candles shaped like hands, feet and various other parts of the body are in abundance. As a major part of the crowd consists of Goans living in Mumbai, the feast looks like any feast in Goa except for the traffic and the congestion. Some of the stalls also offer Goan dishes like sorpotel and sausages and even bebinca. The church itself has a unique story attached to it. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, more commonly known as Mount Mary, is a Roman Catholic church and is set on a hillock facing the Arabian Sea. The current church edifice is just 100 years old but the history behind the current statue of Our Lady goes back to the 16th century when Jesuit priests from Portugal brought the statue to the current location and constructed a chapel. In 1700, Arab pirates interested in the gilt-lined object held in the hand disfigured the statue by cutting off the right hand. In 1760, the church was rebuilt and the statue was substituted with a statue of Our Lady of Navigators. This statue has an interesting legend to it. In the beginning,

Bombay consisted of seven islands and was inhabited by the Koli fishermen community. Once a Koli fisherman dreamt that he would find a statue in the sea. The statue was found floating in the sea between 1700 and 1760. The Fishermen called the statue as ‘Mot Mauli’, literally meaning The Pearl Mother. Till date, both Hindu and Christian Kolis visit this shrine often. As children, we are enthusiastic to celebrate the novenas and then the feast of Our Lady in Goa. And the simple reason is that we can surround our eternal mother and shower her with flowers. It is a great feeling collecting beautiful and colourful flowers of different types and neatly arranging them, especially the petals in our hand-woven baskets. Following the evening novenas, on the tenth day, the feast is celebrated grandly and this feast is no different. In Goa, the feast is celebrated as Monte Saibinnichem Fest or Feast of Our Lady of Mount which is held at the chapel of Our Lady of the Mount at Old Goa, on the evergreen hillock opposite the Se Cathedral. The neat flight of laterite stones plastered with lime mortar steps leads up to the Chapel which was once a fortress of Yusuf Ali Adil Shah. He used the fortress to store artillery which was used to defend against Afonso de Albuquerque's forces in May 1510 and November 1510 when they were finally defeated by Albuquerque. Albuquerque re-conquered Goa in 1510 and ordered for the church to be built. The chapel was built by 1519 and has three main altars dedicated respectively to Our Lady of Mount, St Anthony and St Andrew and has been rebuilt twice till date.

Neetu and Rishi back together after 30 Years

T

hough the couple have been very much in love and together all this time, gorgeous Neetu Singh and dashing Rishi Kapoor will be starring opposite each other after almost 30 years, not counting Neetu’s two second appearance in ‘Love Aaj Kal’, in Habib Faisal's directorial debut ‘Do Dooni Chaar’. In the 80's, the striking couple enthralled audiences working together in 11 romantic films including ‘Rafoo Chakkar’, ‘Khel Khel Mein’ and ‘Kabhie Kabhie’. Neetu reveals that she has dared acting again in ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ only because she could connect to her character and there was a certain comfort level as she was working with her husband. “My role is of Kusum Duggal. She is a very middle-class wife and she has to manage a lot of things, and how she manages her children who are growing up. Her husband has some values... I kind of found there is some connect. I also basically am from the middleclass. It has been a long time. After many, many years, it's great to come back with Habib's film, which has been a great, great experience. Of course because of my husband, there was a comfort level, I was very happy doing it but more so it was the subject, his idea, the way he has conceived it, it was very, very beautiful,” said Neetu. The 52-year-old actress and proud mother of actor Ranbir Kapoor was all praise for Rishi's knack in acting. “I was very young when I worked with him earlier, so I didn't really realise much what a great actor he is. I realise now. Working in this film I saw how finely he improvises his role, helps others, and he has helped me a lot while shooting,” said Neetu. Asked if she was nervous facing the camera after such a long time, she said, “First day I was very nervous. I was forgetting my lines but from the second day it was better.” “I truly believe that today's middle-class housewives are mother India. She manages so many things. She manages a whole family in a tight budget,” added Neetu at the unveiling of the first look of ‘Do Dooni Chaar’.

Different Hues of the Lord A

HERALD FEATURES number of beautiful paintings of Lord Ganesh, all painted by Goan artists, were on display at the Panjim Gallery. Lord Ganesh, in each of these paintings was seen heavily adorned and in many positions, against different backdrops. All the traditional mediums popular with the local artists were used to produce marvellous art work. Among the variety was one that was vastly different and incorporated the new Indian rupee symbol to the face of Lord Ganesh. The entire face of Lord Ganesh was striking, from his ochre brown coloured face to the bright yellow rupee symbol which replaces his ear. The art exhibition definitely witnessed creativity that sprang from devotion.

Badri, bowlers lead CSK to victory AGENCIES Durban, SEPT 11

Chennai Super Kings stamped their authority on the Champions League at the St. George's Park on Saturday when they romped home by 57 runs against t h e c h a m p i o n s f ro m N e w Zealand, Central Stags, thanks to S Badrinath's 52 and the Chennai bowlers who bundled out Stags for just 94. The day began on a sorry note for CSK after MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to take first strike. Mathew Hayden began his second Champions League stint with a golden duck against the Central Stags when his first-ball aggressive intent landed straight into the hands of deep square leg. Things got worse when Hayden's wicket in the first over was followed by Suresh Raina's in the second, leaving Chennai reeling at 5/2. A partnership of sorts ensued between Murali Vijay and S Badrinath but could go only as far as 35 runs, when a snorter took an edge off Vijay's bat straight into the slip fielder's hands. Chennai innings, though, found an unlikely hero in Anirudh Srikkanth who took off

like a man on mission and even rubbed off his aggressive intent onto Badrinath. Boundaries started flowing and soon transformed into sixes and the Chennai innings moved from stable to a healthy state. A 50run partnership turned into 73 but that's when Srikkanth's 29ball cameo of 42 runs came to a standstill, with an attempted slash over point taking his bat's edge en route to the wicketkeeper. In came big-hitting local sensation Albie Morkel, but he could only partially succeed in doing what's always expected off him: hit it hard and long. Credit for that must be given to the Stag's

Boucher gives Warriors easy win PTI PORT ELIZABETH, SEPT 11

Mark Boucher led a solid batting display with a sparkling 26-ball unbeaten 40 as Warriors spank Wayamba by seven wickets in a Champions League Twenty20 match here today. Chasing a modest 154 for a win, the Warriors were never in trouble as they were nicely placed at 93 for three in the 11th over before wicketkeeperbatsman Boucher and Justin Kreusch (37 not out) took them to a comfortable win with 10 balls remaining. The duo shared a 63-run stand for the unconquered fourth wicket from 44 balls. Boucher, who played for Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League, struck four fours and two sixes during his 26-ball stay while Kreusch hit three fours in his 29-ball innings. Boucher smashed two sixes and a four in three successive balls in the 14th over off legspinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi who was playing for Sri Lanka national team till 2007. Opener and captain Davey Jacobs contributed 26 while one down Colin Ingram chipped in with a solid 28-ball 34 at a lively St Georges' Park pitch. Warriors, the South African Twenty20 champions, made a flying start in their run chase though they lost opener Ashwell Prince in the third over. They scored at a brisk rate with Jacobs and Ingram taking the Wayamba bowlers to task notching their 50 runs in the sixth over. bowlers who held their nerves and kept varying their pace. The last two overs didn't bring the desired runs but just enough to help Badrinath reach 52. And with Albie Morkel's small cameo of 26 off 15 balls, CSK notched up a challenging 151 runs. Now it was up to the Murali-led CSK spinners and Bollinger to bowl their heart out and defend a total that Stags must have felt was gettable. Dhoni's comrades beganDhoni's comrades began in the best possible manner by keeping a tight leash on the proceedings, subsequently resulting in wickets. While Morkel and Balaji took care of Ingram (6) and Worker (4) respectively, Murali and Ashwin's introduction struck Stags like lightning. The highest Test wicket-taker took care of Mathew Sinclair (10) and Noema Barnett (0) in his first over while Ashwin foxed Jamie How (13). That left Stags reeling at 44/6, which was followed by a 38-run face-saving partnership but once that was over, the remaining batsmen fell like ninepins and the Stags got bowled out for a paltry 94, giving CSK a comfortable 57-run victory.

Pak trio returns home amid protests AGENCIES LAHORE, SEPT 11

A couple of hundred protestors were at Lahore airport when the three Pakistan players at the centre of the spot-fixing scandal returned home on Saturday morning. Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt left through a back exit away from the people carrying banners and waving shoes. There was also support for the players inside the terminal with one sign saying: "Long live Salman Butt." As reported by media on Thursday, their return does not, however, mean they are cleared from the ongoing criminal investigation. Pakistan's interior minister Rehman Malik said the government of Pakistan would provide a written assurance that the players be made available if needed for further investigations. "We have spoken to Scotland Yard, and the [Pakistan] high commissioner to the UK, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, has also been in talks with them and they have agreed that the players can return to Pakistan," Malik told.

Bowling and fielding was rusty: Sachin AGENCIES JOHANNESBURG, SEPT 11

Mumbai Indians skipper Sachin Tendulkar on Friday admitted that he got out at the wrong time but said his side was "rusty" in their bowling and fielding in the first match of the Championship League here. Mumbai Indians missed many chances and their sloppy fielding helped the Lions pile up a challenging 186 after invited to bat and Tendulkar said they have to work on their weakness before the next match. "Our bowling and fielding looked rusty today. We need to pull up our socks before the next match. In Durban we need to be charged up. There is not much time, we have to prepare

well," Tendulkar said after losing the match by nine runs. Tendulkar said Mumbai Indians were on the track to chase down the target of 187 but his and Kieron Pollard's wicket made all the difference in the end. "We probably gave 20 runs extra, all credit to Lions who batted well. They picked wickets too at crucial moments. We were on track. I thought my wicket and Pollard - we got out at the wrong time," he said. His counterpart Alviro Petersen said it was an overall team effort and their preparation paid off in the end. "I knew the boys will give 100 per cent, we got good runs on the board, and the bowlers backed it up. We set ourselves

160-170, and towards the end we managed more," he said. "186 was a winning total, but Sachin batted well and gave us some nerves but the boys did well. We had plans for every batter, and Shane (Burger) did it well to double bluff him," he added. Man of the Match Jonathan Vandiar, who scored 71 today, said he was under pressure but backed himself to bat through the innings. "I was under pressure. But I knew I could bat through the innings. We were looking at 180, it was a good wicket and I enjoyed batting on it. First few overs it was holding up, but once you got yourself in, it was good to bat," he said.

Everton fightback stuns United; Chelsea stay atop AGENCIES LONDON, SEPT 11

Manchester United conceded two stoppage-time goals to draw 3-3 at Everton, while Chelsea maintained the perfect start to its title defense by beating West Ham 3-1 in the Premier League on Saturday. Even with Wayne Rooney rested amid newspaper stories about his private life, United led 3-1 in the 90th minute. But Tim Cahill sparked Everton’s comeback with a headed goal and Mikel Arteta had time to grab an equaliser. Chelsea had no difficulties seeing off West Ham, which is still without a point after four matches. Michael Essien netted Chelsea’s first goal after two minutes and headed in its third in the 83rd. Arsenal is two points behind Chelsea in second after routing Bolton 4-1, while big-spending Manchester City was held to a 11 draw by Blackburn to collect only one point from its last two matches. Tottenham was held 11 by West Bromwich, as was Sunderland at Wigan, while Blackpool won its second match since being promoted, prevailing 2-0 over fellow newcomer Newcastle. Fulham’s 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton came at a cost, with Bobby Zamora injuring his leg to be ruled out for four months. United manager Alex Ferguson took the decision to drop Rooney to protect him from fans’ abuse at his former ground. United fell behind when Arteta shot straight at goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and Leon Osman passed the rebound to Steven Pienaar, who rolled the ball into the net in the 39th minute. Darren Fletcher leveled four minutes later from a cross by Nani, who whipped another ball into the box in the 47th for an unmarked Nemanja Vidic to head into the net. United went further ahead when Dimitar Berbatov’s first touch from Paul Scholes’ pass took him clear of Sylvain Distin before firing past goalkeeper Tim Howard in the 66th. A string of saves prevented United extending its lead, before

Cahill and Arteta stunned the visitors in stoppage time. Chelsea’s fourth straight win never looked in doubt when Essien headed in after two minutes and Salomon Kalou scored with a ricochet from a clearance by defender Matthew Upson in the 18th. Essien scored Chelsea’s third before Scott Parker hit a late consolation goal for West Ham by lobbing goalkeeper Petr Cech. At Emirates Stadium, Laurent Koscielny scored his first goal for Arsenal in the 24th, but the French defender’s poor header allowed Johan Elmander to level just before the break. Marouane Chamakh restored Arsenal’s lead with a 58thminute header. A tackle from behind on the Morocco striker resulted in Gary Cahill being sent off in the 64th. Arsenal midfielder Alex Song chipped goalkeeper Adam Bogdan from a tight angle, and substitute Carlos Vela blasted in the fourth from the edge of the area in the 83rd. While Arsenal successfully overcame injuries to key attacking players, north London rival Tottenham struggled without striker Jermain Defoe and defender Michael Dawson. And Spurs playmaker Luka Modric limped off injured shortly after pouncing on a loose ball to put Spurs ahead in the 27th. Chris Brunt leveled for West Brom in the 41st with a close-range header. Man City’s hopes of reaching the top four were hit by another setback, leaving the team with only one win from four matches. Patrick Vieira’s 55th-minute goal salvaged a draw against Blackburn, which led through Nikola Kalinic after a mix-up between Kolo Toure and goalkeeper Joe Hart. At Craven Cottage, Mousa Dembele canceled out Jelle van Damme’s 10th-minute opener for Wolves at the start of the second half. And Dembele scored from a free kick in injury time to clinch Fulham’s 2-1 win after Wolves defender Christophe Berra was sent off for receiving a second yellow card.

Sunderland left Wigan with a point despite midfielder Lee Cattermole being sent off against his former club after two poor challenges brought him as many bookings. Asamoah Gyan put Sunderland ahead on debut after volleying home in the 66th, but Antolin Alcaraz headed in a late equalizer. At St. James’ Park, Charlie Adam converted a 45th-minute penalty after Blackpool teammate Luke Varney was tripped by Newcastle midfielder Alan Smith. D.J. Campbell sealed the victory at St. James’ Park in the 90th.

stressed. “We cannot look into who makes the duplication of tickets, but the bar coding systems show green light when the ticket is screened and that is enough. The bar code cannot be duplicated. The latest machines which have been in use in IPL shows a green light and therefore there are no chances of ticket duplication as the system of checking is done automatically by the machine.” On the matter of RTI issues raised by activist Aires Rodrigues, Narvekar maintained, “GCA doesn’t come under RTI Act as BCCI doesn’t also come under RTI. There is also a Supreme Court order which said that BCCI does not come under RTI. Under RTI a substantial amount has to come from the Government and we do not get anything from the government. Not only that, even we do not get substantial amount for running our activities.”
