Uniqlo, the subsidiary of Japanese Fast Retailing giant recently implemented a four day workweek as opposed to the traditional 5 day workweek for its employees. This initiative was created as a response to the great multitude of part time workers. This is in hope of reducing the part time workers, as they care less emotionally invested in their employment and can’t compare to the broad knowledge about the stores and company acquired by the full time workers. The four day workweek will be offered to about one fifth of its in store employees, starting in October. The employees pay will remain the same, but the four working days will be longer, for ten hours as opposed to the usual eight hours per day. Many of the employees prefer a three day weekend due to clashing jobs, or families. This is a particularly interesting and popular option for the mothers but also individuals with elderly parents who need to be cared for. This initiative is encouraging equality and are meeting their employees needs. Stakeholder engagement is increasingly used to ensure labor conditions. About 22 % of Japanese workers put in more than 49 hours a week, compared with 16 % of US workers, according to The Guardian. As a reaction to overwork and stress from traditionally long hours, some Japanese companies, including trading house Itochu, have banned late nights.
