Is the Transgender too IsCommunity the Diverse? Transgender

Community too Diverse? Posted By Henrietta Hedberg Caitlyn Jenner, the face of Vanity Fair and starring in her new show “I Am Cait is a transgender woman. Laverne Cox is a successful actress, producer, and LGBT spokesperson. If Cox and Jenner are employed, successful women, why aren’t other trans people? Maintaining and obtaining employment as a trans individual is statistically more difficult than for many other minorities which is ironic given that trans representation provides diversity within the workplace, a concept often encouraged within business policies.

1. What is Diversity? What is diversity? The most common examples of diversity are gender, race, ethnicity, disability, religion, belief, age, pregnancy, maternity, marriage, sexuality, disability and age; often omitting gender identity. The lack of diversity can lead to discrimination, including stereotyping, making assumptions, patronising, humiliating, and disrespecting people. Diversity is good. Diversity is a positive tool in the workplace fostering innovation and equality. It decreases discrimination not only in the workplace but globally. But treating everyone the same could be discriminatory too, as each individual has different values. converted by Web2PDFConvert.com

Transgenders are diverse. The transgender community is a minority and can provide diversity in the workplace. Unfortunately the community is underrepresented. But how is this possible if companies promote diversity? Obtaining employment isn’t the only problem, maintaining employment as a trans person is another obstacle that needs to be overcome with education and empathy.

2. Maintaining Eployment Coming out whilst employed should be a given right for the transgendered. However, in a UK study on transgender rights more than 40% of transgender workers don’t, due to fear of workplace repercussions. This is not without cause. A study by the International Labour Organisation shows that transgender individuals suffer the highest degree of discrimination in employment.

3. Obtaining Employment Another predicament is obtaining employment as a trans person. Jobs are frequently tied togender roles, and this reflects the level of opportunities companies provide leading to discrimination within the trans community by women and men dominated roles. Unemployment within the trans community forces some into prostitution. This type of discrimination therefore impacts the globe negatively, leaving the community vulnerable and detached from society.

4. Promoting Employment Welcoming a trans person into the workplace starts with adjusting to the appropriate pronoun, but does not end there. Recognising discrimination as a global problem, and providing education for a more diverse, less discriminatory environment must follow. Education is vital to integrate the trans converted by Web2PDFConvert.com

community, as cis individuals often mistakenly discriminate. Andy, an IT support assistant explains “They try to be supportive by they don’t know how to. Management is the same, there so much ignorance about transgender issues… people who’d never dream of discriminating against colleagues do it by default.” But there is an upside! Legal remedies for gender identity and trans inclusive minority trade union initiatives are providing a collective voice and recent research shows that manyFortune 500 companies voluntarily choose to implement LGBT friendly HRM policies despite the absence of regulatory pressures. Let’s follow their example and create a diverse environment.
