Child labour is one of the most pressing issues within labour law today. Although measures have been taken to prevent child labour, it is still an issue. The International Labour Organisation statistics state that there are 168 million children involved in child labour.
Location The majority of child labour occurs in less developed countries. Children go to work to ensure that their family has enough money to live. 85 million of the child labourers are placed inhazardous work. 13 million or 8.8% are found in Latin America and the Caribbean. 9.2 million are located in the Middle East and North Africa.
Industry Agriculture is the biggest sector hiring child labourers. There are 98 million children working in agriculture, which is 59% of the worlds child labourers. In services there are 54 million child workers, and there are 12 million industry child labourers.
Ivory Coast Cocoa is produced in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, and makes up nearly 75% of the global chocolate supplies. Ivory Coast child labour lies between 30,000 to 80,000. Nestle purchases 1\10 of global cocoa production, of which 20% comes from the Ivory Coast.
KitKat Switzerland based Nestle, is going to make the first Kit Kat free of child labour, early 2016. It’s the first major candy bar company to verify that they are completely child labour free. But why did Nestle not tackle this issue before? They did, but the company made a surprise visitto the Ivory Coast to ensure good working conditions and no child labour. They visited 200 Farms, and found 4 children under the age of 15 in the cocoa business, contributing to the making of the Kit Kat. Another measure the
company is making, is buying 150,000 metric tons of “sustainably produced coach” by 2017. In 2012, 650 Kit Kats’ were consumed every second around the world. Nestle is a leader both in terms of child labour, but also in terms of candy bars. This makes the Kit Kat free of child labor so essential.
