Is It Human Nature to Hate Work? Posted on 03/09/2015 by Henrietta Hedberg

Is it human nature to hate work? According to Barry Schwarts of the New York Times, it isn’t and we don’t. Working provides a sense of purpose, andemotional wellbeing stemming from survival instinct. What makes some dislike working can be due to a bad working environment, or merely that working is not a choice for most.

Survival Instinct Working provides a sense of purpose, also achieved from parenthood. Human beings survival instinct is based on keeping the human being on earth. The survival instinct is impregnated in each one of us to ensure offspring andoffspring survival. Otherwise we’d probably just lay down and die. It’s a purpose. Everyone will at one point die, survival isn’t an instinct we to live forever, but to ensure that there are future generations.

Emotional Wellbeing But what adds to the sense of purpose, is not only the paycheck, but the sense of meaning and personal satisfaction. Promoting the wellbeing of others, is promoting ones own, you feel good doing it. The purpose is not to merely serve your own wellbeing but also to establish a contribution to society, to do some good.

Compensation Compensation is a part of why human beings work, but not the mere purpose. This does not make it human nature to hate work. Hard work doesn’t always come hand in hand with compensation, but that doesn’t matter given that you achieve a deeper sense of purpose. We are not money driven by nature. People are less likely to help with a small task if money is offered, than if money isn’t offered, as it creates the sense of a commercial transaction rather than helping a fellow being. People like to choose to help.

Choice

Driven by making their own destiny, and feeling in control humans like make choices, to have choices. For most, working is not an option. It is a necessity. This type of necessity can make the worker feel trapped. Choosing can make a person feel happier, choosing to play the guitar or choosing to go to work can be equally challenging and rewarding, but going to work becomes an obligation, there is a lack of choice. But is it human nature to hate work? No, we need it.
