TO CULOTTE OR NOT CULOTTE JANUARY 2, 2016 / JESSE SHAW / 0 COMMENTS

To Culotte or Not Culotte You may think the cullotte trouser makes you look like an oompa loompa, or a rather unattractive version of yourself, but that is all about to change. The culotte, or what is also known as the baggy trouser with an awkward leg length, has slowly but steadily integrated itself into society. Apart from the aesthetic challenges of the culotte, there are many sources of concern one might have when it comes to the alternative wear. Does the lack of clothing around your calves make you colder? Will the wide-legged breeze graze up your leg, eventually turning you into a snowman?

Footwear is another pressing concern with the culotte. After deep insight and research, it has been proven that sneakers, oxfords, and platform mid-boots are the best types of footwear to combine with the culotte. Footwear solves an additional problem with the culotte, the height to leg ratio issue. For a longer leg effect, platforms are essential, for a sophisticated look wear a pair of oxfords. Combining the right sort of trousers with shoes is essential, as you might find yourself looking like an oompa loompa. The main concern most fashionistas have with the garment is that your legs may look short, it is not the coldness or the general awkward look that may come of the culotte. The craving for long-legged beauties does not only come from the homo faber, science dictates that it’s in our DNA. Studies into sexual attraction have found that taller people, both men and women, are perceived as more attractive. Long legs are a sign of health according to Boguslaw Pawlowski, who additionally stated, “leg length is a good indicator of childhood nutrition in women because their legs stop growing once they reach puberty. So if a woman has long legs it suggests she grew up in a good environment and that has a positive effect on fertility. The effect in men is more subtle, because their legs continue to beyond puberty.”

Perhaps Mr Pawlowski’s scientific research explains why we are reluctant to buy into the culotte trend. The hem length of the culotte is crucial to how tall one is perceived to be. Too close to your ankle, and one might echo the attractiveness of a duck. If the hem of the culotte is between your knee and ankle, this may eliminate the optical illusion of an oompa loompa or duck. But this is not based on any research by Pawlowski, it is just a mere observation. Article Written by Henrietta Hedberg 2
