Our hearts break as Carrie loses her iconic “Carrie” necklace. But why do our hearts crumble upon her despair? It’s just a necklace. How can we, and why do we develop emotional bonds with things? In Carrie’s case the necklace symbolized a connection to her old life in NYC. It stood for friendship, laughter, and success. It is not about the object itself, rather what it reminds her of, when you wore it, where you wore it and who was there. To understand why our hearts break, let’s dive into the background story of the necklace. The costume designer of Sex and the City, Patricia Field revealed to InStyle where the necklace originated from. She had a shop in NYC and began to notice kids wearing nameplate necklaces, and figured it would make the perfect accessory for Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. So what does the Carrie necklace mean to the viewers? The television series aired between 1998 until 2004. Whether you were in Carrie’s shoes and were lost in dating along with her, or looking forward to getting past puberty or loosing your virginity, it was a relatable series.

Perhaps this is what the Carrie necklace stands for: hope, dreams and understanding.
The bond between the four cosmopolitan friends was one to strive for. Their lives were a dream to achieve. They were glamorous, they knew who they were and what they wanted, and weren’t afraid to ask. Watching them as a young girl gave us an idea of who we wanted to become. As a woman, it was someone who understood you. converted by Web2PDFConvert.com
Women are often depicted as rude, flesh-eating, competitive, gossipy creatures, but that wasn’t the case in SATC. Yes, they gossiped, yes they wanted to have careers and sometimes they were even rude. But that doesn’t mean that they were bad, they were normal women, they were relatable and not depicted in a negative light. This may be another reason the Carrie necklace is so popular. It stands for being who you are, not apologizing for wanting to be great, for wanting to take risks, or for wanting to be happy. Image Source: HBO/SATC Carrie Bradshaw
