LAS VEGAS, NV Each year, millions of older adults experience a fall, and for many, the consequences can be life-changing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in four Americans age 65 and older falls each year, making falls the leading cause of injury among seniors In 2023, more than 41,000 older adults nationwide lost their lives due to falls a number that has risen more than 70% over the past two decades.
September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month, a reminder that while the risk is real, falls are not an inevitable part of aging. Experts stress that simple steps can greatly reduce the danger.
Make the home safer by removing loose rugs and clutter, adding grab bars in bathrooms, and improving lighting.
Stay active with balance and strength exercises such as tai chi or chair yoga.
Check in with doctors about medications that may cause dizziness, and keep up with regular vision and hearing exams.
Talk about falls openly with healthcare providers, since falling once doubles the chance of falling again.

“Fall prevention is about independence,” said the National Council on Aging in a recent statement. “With small changes, seniors can continue to live safely and confidently in their homes and communities.”
This month, take time to review your own safety or check in with a loved one
Preventing falls not only protects health it helps preserve freedom and peace of mind.
