25YEARSOFSERVINGSENIORS

LAS VEGAS, NV This October, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley proudly celebrates 25 years of serving seniors in Southern Nevada. Since opening its doors in 2000, the nonprofit organization has remained dedicated to one mission: helping local seniors maintain independence and dignity by providing essential services free of charge.

Over the years, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley has grown from a small initiative into a cornerstone of support for thousands of older adults across the Las Vegas Valley. Today, the organization operates five major programs Transportation, Nutrition, Senior Marketplace, Minor Home Repair, and Respite Care. Each program is designed to address a vital need, whether it is providing a ride to a doctor’s appointment, delivering groceries, assisting with home safety, or offering relief for caregivers.

The impact has been remarkable. Every month, seniors receive nutritious food through the Senior Marketplace and home-delivered meals Hundreds rely on rides that keep them connected to medical care, errands, and social opportunities. Others find comfort in knowing their homes are safer and their caregivers supported.

While much has changed in Southern Nevada over the last 25 years, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley has remained a steady presence, responding to the evolving needs of seniors with compassion and commitment. From the early days of providing a handful of services to now offering comprehensive programs, the organization’s history is a testament to the power of community coming together for its elders.

As Helping Hands of Vegas Valley looks ahead to the next 25 years, the focus remains the same ensuring seniors in our community never feel alone and always have access to the resources they need to thrive.

STAYING CONNECTED WITH FAMILY USING YOUR SMARTPHONE

WHAT IS OUT THERE?

Twenty-five years ago, most of us relied on landline phones or even handwritten letters to keep in touch. Today, smartphones make it easier than ever to connect with children, grandchildren, and friends no matter where they live.

Here are some simple ways to use your phone to stay close to the people you love:

1. Phone Calls and Texts

Calls: Just open your phone app, tap a contact, and press the green phone button.

Text messages: Tap the speech bubble icon on your home screen, type a message, and hit send. This is an easy way to check in quickly.

2. Video Chat Apps

Seeing a loved one’s smile can brighten your whole day. Popular apps for video calls include:

FaceTime (built into iPhones and iPads).

Google Meet (works on Android and Apple devices).

Zoom (great for group calls).

WhatsApp (free video calls worldwide).

To use these, you’ll need Wi-Fi or mobile data. Once you open the app, select a contact, and look for the video camera icon.

3. Sharing Photos and Memories

Facebook or Messenger: Share photos, comment on updates, and send private messages.

Google Photos: Lets family members upload and share pictures in one place.

4. Simple Tips for Success

Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi before starting a video call.

Use headphones if it’s noisy around you. Ask a family member to help you install and practice using the app once after that, it’s as easy as pressing a button.
