HLM: What do you love most about Joburg?
DP: Johannesburg was the city of opportunity when gold was first discovered in 1886, and after so many years it still offers the widest selection of opportunities for all walks of life. I love the energy emanated by the diversity of cultures living here, and people visiting the city!
HLM: Your ideal way to spend a night out on the town?
DP: Dinner at Kream Restaurant, Montecasino; then a show at The Pieter Toerien Theatre.

alentine’s Day has become quite a controversial day over the years. Many refuse to celebrate it, while others go all out. I wonder, how will you celebrate Valentine’s Day this year?
I remember how excited I used to get about Valentine’s Day in primary school. It was a school tradition for the prefects to collect love letters and put them in a large letter box. The box would only be opened on Valentine’s Day and the letters – usually nameless and from secret admirers – would then be handed out to those it had been written for. Apart from the excitement, I also remember the anguish and uncertainty of the day. “What if I don’t get a letter?” “Is there someone who likes me?” “How will I know who wrote the letter?”
We all want to be seen. Recognised. Acknowledged. It’s human nature. For me, Valentine’s Day has evolved over the years. I now use the day (and every other day) to celebrate the gift of love with family and friends. Sometimes we’ll do dinner with candles. Other times we’ll celebrate with an outdoor picnic and kids running around all over the place. I’ve come to realise that celebrating the gift of love should not be limited to
in the Cradle of Humankind. Panoramic views across the North West Province with the Aerial Cableway. A boat cruise with Harties Boat Company.
HLM: Most unusual request from a guest...
DP: Foreign visitors are very often mesmerized when discovering the real size of South Africa when coming to the Concierge Desk, requesting a visit to the Kruger National Park in the morning, and Cape Town in the afternoon!
HLM: What is your most frequented restaurant in the city?
DP: I have always enjoyed memorable dining experiences at both Kream and Hussar Grill at Montecasino, especially during the week. Weekends can get a little congested.
only one day, which is why I am so glad that this issue stretches over two months. We need to celebrate the gift of love daily and include the word, L-OV-E, to our gratitude journals. It’s something we should pray over ourselves and others.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs.” – 1 Corinthians 13
Love truly is what makes the world a better place. Let’s love and let there be love – these two months and every other month.
HLM: What is your best under-the-radar thing to do in the city?
DP: MultiFlora Flower Market in City Deep where one can discover new varieties and colours of flowers from all over the world. Or, SOHO Sandton City to enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating nail and pamper experience.

Back when he had to decide on a stage name, he could not think of ways to brand his name as cleverly as local chef JAN, who has a Michelin Star restaurant in Nice, France. Honestly, we’re pretty sure had he put his mind to it, he would have come up with very nifty ideas – he is a wordsmith and songwriter, after all! Still, Elvis Blue sticked and after Idols 2010, few people didn’t know who he was.
Yes, who in his right mind calls himself Elvis, even in South Africa?” he laughs. Elvis Blue’s wife worked at a hospice at the time when he had to decide on a stage name and there was a boy called Elvis Blaauw. They used to make music together and kept saying that the boy should change his name to Elvis Blue, because it sounded cool. Sadly, the boy passed away, but his legend certainly lives on every time Jan Hoogendyk – or rather, Elvis Blue – takes to the stage.
Elvis Blue has been making music since the young age of sixteen. He grew up in Joburg and went on to study music. When he was 25 years old, an opportunity arose to open a music school in the Garden Route, resulting in him relocating to George. He says while he’s been making music for many years, Idols and getting his name out there certainly helped him and his wife to create a more comfortable lifestyle for themselves and their family. “After Idols we could at least buy food,” he jokes.
He might be full of jokes, but Elvis Blue is also a man who often thinks hard about life. Not only with his head, but also with his heart. He writes the kind of music that echoes the hearts of those who listen. “Music is such a great gift,” he says. “If you get the opportunity to make music and you can write and release songs, it’s a wonderful thing. All music has its place. I’ve always felt that mine is the kind of music that wants to say something. We all have a lot of darkness and a lot of light through the seasons of our lives, and for each season you need music. I try to make music that people can resonate with.”
For Elvis Blue it’s not only about writing music for himself, but also for people. He tries to find universal themes to write about, love probably being the most universal of all.
He goes by Elvis Blue, but his real name is Jan Hoogendyk. According to him, Jan wasn’t much of a ‘rock ’n roll’ name for a musician.
HL: Beer or wine?
Elvis Blue: Wine. White in summer; red in winter.
HL: Kalahari sand or beach sand?
Elvis Blue: Ah, I love the Kalahari. But, I live in George, so I’ll have to go with beach sand.
Elvis Blue believes in love, alright, but Valentine’s Day? Not so much. Anything that uses the word love to make money goes beyond what he believes. “There’s been so many songs written about it,” he says. “Love is a verb.”
We can’t agree more. Love is work. Not just a letter in a box that might either mend or break your heart. “I have two daughters. I hate Valentine’s Day,” he passionately shares his view of the over-commercialised day and its potential impact on his two lovely daughters, aged nine and thirteen. “It breaks me. The schools, the red and I am so scared my children’s hearts get hurt.”
While he’s not majorly romantic himself, he will buy his wife flowers from time to time, but certainly not on Valentine’s Day. To him, Valentine’s Day is plastic. That said, his wife apparently celebrates anything worth celebrating, from Christmas and New Years to Valentine’s Day and any other day worth celebrating, keeping things light and balanced.
There really is much more to life than
During the two uncertain years that Covid-19 brought about, the Hoogendyk family were unstoppable. They started a coffee shop amidst a pandemic, and as if that wasn’t enough, they also bought a bus to renovate!
Clearly an entrepreneur at heart, Elvis Blue says he struggles to balance all the balls too, even though it sure looks like he’s got everything figured out. He says the secret to life and managing multiple businesses lies in having the right people in your corner. “I have many clever guys who help me. Over the years, it has helped me a lot to not be afraid to listen to all the clever people. Just get a couple of guys whom you are willing to listen to.”
The Elvis Brew Padstal (farm stall) located adjacent to the George Airport was one of the things that kept Elvis Blue and his family going during the Covid-19 pandemic. He says without it, he would have been out of work and he will forever be grateful for this special place. The owner of the nursery on the property where the Elvis Brew Padstal now proudly stands, phoned the singer up one day, telling him about his daughter’s musical talent and that they would love some input and guidance from him. It later came to light that the girl’s dad was the owner of the property next to the airport and Elvis told him that he’d been wanting to open a coffee shop there for years. Soon enough, they were in agreement and Elvis Blue’s dream of Elvis Brew was becoming reality. The farm stall turned coffee shop opened amidst the uncertainty of Covid-19, qualifying as a spaza shop and they’ve even added a second shop – Kleine Elvis Brew – in Hartenbos. “I was clueless!” says Elvis Blue about starting the business. “But we love the place and the people who come there. It helped us so much during Covid.”
Elvis Blue and his wife have always wanted to buy a bus and renovate it. “I wanted to do it in my silver years, you know?” he says. But, Covid convinced them to do it earlier. We bought a cheap, old bus. It’s so cool – it has bathrooms, rooms, a lounge, satellite TV and everything.” They even made a television program of the renovation, called Elvis Bou Elvis Blue will be touring with the El Bus this year, so be sure to keep an eye out for it when you’re on
Since he’s all about having a plan, Elvis Blue’s plan for 2023 includes an exciting and rather special new album. He will be recording the album differently this time; a way in which he hasn’t recorded an album in a long time. “While this might not sound very exciting to most, musicians will understand,” he says. He will be recording the album with some of his favourite musicians – all in one room – for the first time in thirteen years. You might not be able to anticipate the difference in the quality of music now, but once you hear it, you’ll know. “I’m very excited,” he says.
One of the other things Elvis Blue will continue to include in his planning this year and beyond is family time. Since building the El Bus, they’ve been exploring the country with it. They recently went camping in Buffelsbaai and they just love it.
In addition to that, they love their family “chill time,” watching television together.
he shares.
He’s also a keen mountain biker. According to him, the Garden Route has excellent MTB trails to explore. “I love mountain biking,” he says, highlighting the George area, Stellenbosch and Cape Town as some of his favourite MTB destinations. “We sometimes also do the longer rides like in the Karoo, Montagu Pass and the Swartberg Pass.”
In addition to mountain biking, Elvis Blue also enjoys surfing. “I am always afraid of getting eaten by a shark,” he says, recommending safer surfing spots like Mossel Bay and Victoria Bay as his go-to options. “We also take an annual Jeffreys Bay trip – now, that’s the ultimate surfing destination. And a couple of pals and I go surfing in Indonesia every year. The waves are calm and it’s beautiful!” H
“I try to work with a plan. If I don’t make plans, nothing will happen,” he says.
“We watch Survivor, The Block, and we talk a lot of nonsense!”
Elvis Blue will be doing a production called Dis wie ek wil wees at various venues this year, so keep an eye out for dates and venues on his website. He will also be at the major local festivals, including Woordfees, Aardklop, Innibos and more.

Fashion fads come and go and clearly, some are coming around again if you look at what is trending right now. According to Cosmopolitan and Pinterest Predicts, we are headed back to the early 2000s with a renewed popularity of crop tops, cargo pants and slip dresses.
South African stylist, image consultant and makeup artist, Suna Robberts says the cargo style is not just for pants, but also for jackets and tops. “Alongside this trend is the lowering of waistlines. Where highwaisted was the thing for the last few seasons, we are now heading back to low-rise styles. However, this won’t happen overnight in South Africa, and I expect high-waisted will still be popular for another season or two. Pants’ legs are looser, and we’ll see more straight, flared, and bootleg pants.”
We might even be going further back in time. Think Versailles at the time of Louis XIV with ruffles (yes, even for men), lace and tulle. “For me, this is more about layering and textures. It’s easy to incorporate an item with lace or a ruffle into your look, and it works especially well with denim,” adds Suna.
Transparent or sheer clothing items are also a hot trend and are constantly being seen on runways, says Cosmopolitan. Suna says there are fun ways to incorporate this trend into your look. “Layer sheer skirts or dresses over more solid fabric, or wear a bra-style top with a sheer T-shirt over it. Novelty or kitsch prints like cartoon characters are also fun and fashionable, and we’ll see it on everything from jumpsuits to socks.” She adds that metallics and bling are big news, even for daytime wear. “Sequins are no longer just for nights on the town. Incorporate a shiny top or dress even if you are going to a daytime function. Men can add a touch of bling by dressing up with a sequins bow-tie, or go all out with sequins pants or jackets.” For men, the style is also moving to more loose suits (especially pants), so pack away those skinny jeans.
For both sexes, fringes and tassels on everythingfrom jackets and shoes to wedding dresses - are big news, says Pinterest Predicts. Suna agrees: “We see fringes on dresses, jacket sleeves and shoes. Combine this with a leather jacket, and you are seriously on-trend. Leather is a big trend, especially leather bomber jackets for both men and women.”
Suna adds that the season’s must-have colour is blue, especially cobalt and aquamarine. “Add a pop of colour with a blue jacket, crop top, or jewellery in these eye-catching colours.”
When it comes to hair trends, the focus is on everything short. Short fringes and bobs are the way to go, says Pinterest Predicts and Bernard Buys, a hairstylist from the salon Refine Line in Linden, agrees. “Haircuts like the Pixie and very short bobs like the French Girl are popular, and we also see a mixing of styles. The ‘Bixie’ is a combination of a bob and Pixie. It has the texture of a Pixie but the length of a bob.” Dual hair colours, like combining a blonde do with lavender streaks or brown hair with a pink balayage, are also very trendy. “Highlights are still popular, but we also see people opting for a very definite pop of colour in their hair,” adds Bernard. Men are choosing more natural styles and even curls.

says Bernard. H
Pinterest Predicts also says there will be a big focus on the scalp this year and looking after the skin on your head with treatments and massages.

Analog hobbies are trending, with searches for topics like making paper rings, origami instructions, paper mache furniture, quilling art, making paper animals and more, surging.
Making puppets is another analog hobby one might attempt, like actress Michelle Botha. What started out as a hobby and a dream to educate and entertain, has grown from two puppets into a full-blown company. Botha’s love for puppets started when she worked for the production team of Takalani Sesame. There’s a newly launched Cap Classique in the Krone Collection – a vintage that forms part of a pioneering series that explores the most outstanding South African sites for Cap Classique.
2. Serve with edible rose petals
First, make the Raspberry Rose Reduction. In a pot, simmer ¼ cup raspberries, 1 tsp lemon juice and 1tsp sugar until soft. Strain, then add rose water. Cool the liquid to use in the cocktail.
Next, add ½ cup of ice to a cocktail shaker. Add a squeeze of lemon.
Add 50ml of the Raspberry Rose Reduction. Shake this mixture in the cocktail shaker with the lid closed.

It was in 2016 that Krone released the first site-specific Cap Classique, underscoring its commitment to making vintage-only bottlefermented sparkling wines. This bubbly, dubbed Kaaimansgat Blanc de Blanc 2016 came from the iconic Kaaimansgat vineyard near Villiersdorp. The 2018 vintage also hails from this same valley – located 700m above sea level. Now, the 2019 vintage comes from Krone’s home farm, Twee Jonge Gezellen in Tulbagh. Like Kaaimansgat, the climate in Tulbagh is extreme and the farm is ensconced by snow-capped mountains in winter, while summer brings very hot conditions. The rocky soils are also like nowhere else in the Cape. Carrying the story of its terroir, this Cap Classique will definitely surprise wine lovers with its elegance.
Krone’s cellarmaster, Rudiger Gretschel says: “Producing a vintage wine from a single vineyard is the purest expression of transparency and authenticity. It is an exercise in courage and passion, leaving no place to hide as the quality of the grapes and the skill of the winemaker are in full view.”
Price: From R3 240 for a box of six bottles
If you’re not keen on too much alcohol, perhaps consider trying Toor Whisky’s whisky aperitif. No longer restricted by traditional rules made for outdated whiskydrinking stereotypes, this new classification opens doors to a whole new whisky experience.
Toor Whisky has recently launched two exciting new whisky aperitifs – Camel Thorn and Rooibos – and apart from its beautiful packaging, it also comes with quite an interesting palate, mainly containing caramel and stone-fruit, as well as hints of maple and earth.
Price: R299 per bottle
The Stellenbosch-based Delheim has just released its latest vintage and it’s a special one as it’s the first since they’ve achieved official Heritage Vineyard status. The Delheim Wild Ferment Chenin Blanc 2021 epitomises the renowned family-owned winery’s sloganWorth the Journey - so well.
The vineyard which the wine was produced from - Delheim’s Ou Jong (Old Youngster) vineyard - dates back to 1986. Rather than using commercial yeast, Delheim allows wild strains in the air around the winery and on the grapes to spark fermentation. Says cellarmaster, Roelof Lotriet: “I like spontaneous or wild fermentation with this vineyard because it is old enough to tell a story. Younger vineyards are like children, still needing direction. Older vineyards like the block we use for the Wild Ferment Chenin Blanc have lived through many winters and can tell many tales. For me, it’s like that relative who tells all the best stories at the campfire or dinner table.”
This wine shows a complex array of characteristics associated with its style. Fragrances of stone fruits and orange peel are dominant on the nose, supported by a subtle note of honeysuckle. On the palate, you can expect vibrant fruit with a round mouthfeel and a lasting finish.
Price: From R170 per bottle

epicentre of Joburg and for good reason. With a multitude of new and exciting restaurants to choose from, diners are increasingly discerning and idealistic. This ensures that restaurateurs keep evolving their offering to deliver a consistent flow of excitement and interest to the foodie scene.
The MAMASAMBA team has clearly accepted this challenge with alacrity and gusto. And, for this we thank them.
From the moment you enter this cosmopolitan eatery, your imagination is transported to the bustling streets of Miami with its eclectic mix of Latin American culture, mid-century modern design and cheeky playfulness. The restaurant’s layout has been designed with intention and consideration to the patron’s overall experience. With contrasting hues of pink, green and gold, the stage is set for an evening of pure indulgence.
We must mention from the start that the menus are slightly confusing to the uninitiated. However, this might have been a purposeful decision to generate the theatrical experience that is unique to MAMASAMBA.
There are two cocktails we could highly recommend you try. The first - Hips Don’t
Lie – is a mix of Patrón Reposado tequila, horchata, lime juice, maple syrup and pineapple juice, while the second - Lupitaconsists of Bacardi Cuatro, pineapple juice, passionfruit syrup, lime juice and Creole bitters. We’re told the Lupita especially is very popular and honestly, these are two of the most delicious and well-presented cocktails we’ve tasted.
MAMASAMBA has also done an exceptional job of interpreting the complexity of Latin American cuisine. They create exceptional dishes with bold flavour, without detracting focus from the unique and fresh ingredients.
For starters, we recommend the Samba Futumaki, which is a nori and cucumber roll, stuffed with a fried prawn, tuna, salmon and spring onions, topped off with Japanese mayo. If you’ve arrived hungry, we highly suggest visiting the Asado section of the menu. Here you will find a selection of meat, seafood and chicken dishes that have been grilled in a wood and coal fired Josper oven to maximize tenderness and taste. Again, something totally different and unique to the MAMASAMBA experience.
Ceviche is a very popular Latin American dish and MAMASAMBA celebrates this unique offering in new and interesting ways. The restaurant offers Ceviche, prepared the traditional way, as well as Tradito - a combination of Ceviche and Sashimi. They even have a Waggu Tataki with ginger soy dressing and truffle shavings that we will definitely be trying on our next visit.

Delightful atmosphere under the fairy lights paired with scrumptious dishes.
The difference between a good meal and a great meal is hard to quantify, but context plays a role alongside technique, inventiveness, imagination, playfulness and passion. All of those things live comfortably together at Cape Town’s FYN – voted as the best restaurant in Africa and placed at number 37 in the 2022 World’s 50 Best Restaurants ratings. FYN fuses Japanese precision and presentation with South African produce to deliver an astonishing dining experience in one of the world’s most beautiful settings: In the heart of one of the most appealing cities globally.
The debate around how FYN came in behind five other local restaurants in the 2022 EatOut Woolworths Restaurant Awards when the global competition named it as the best restaurant on the continent, is one for the critics. Ultimately, South Africans can be proud that FYN is acknowledged as one of the best restaurants in the world.
The kitchen at FYN is central to the 60-seater restaurant space, with the team under Executive Chef Ashley Moss quietly going about producing plates of wonder with the backdrop of Table Mountain beyond the floor-to-ceiling glass. Plush without being cluttered and without a hint of pretence, the space blends African and Japanese elements in the same seamless way the food does.
There’s a concise tasting menu for lunch with pescatarian and plant-based options, a ‘reduced’ dinner menu and the ‘full dinner menu experience’ of around eight courses (with some surprises along the way) and a wine pairing option for all.
The fusion of two cultures that you’d imagine would have little in common works to produce a dining experience you simply can’t have anywhere else.
The seamless blend is evident across elements major and minor – from Cape Malay curry vinaigrette and yuzu atchar gel coexisting on a plate, to ostrich egg chawanmushi or Outeniqua springbok with hijiki (savourypeppery seaweed) and Ceres cherries. The menu changes regularly and seasonally, but many of the hits – like the springbok –remain, with a few tweaks.
Opting for the wine pairing elevates the meal from great to sublime, with some ingenious matches emphasised by a vintage bent. Somehow, the careful pairing selection unlocks a wondrous additional level to each dish that is truly worth exploring.
It's a meal worth planning a trip to the Mother City around – and plan, you must. Reservations are in short supply, particularly for premium timeslots – a nod to the deserved global recognition for a place we can call our own. H

Imagine a scene from the popular series, Emily in Paris. Emily, dressed in some or other puffy sleeved mini dress by a famous French designer, sipping on a cup of coffee as she plots her next over-the-top marketing move... Visualise round blue tables twirling, coffee cream swirling and a local choir surprising patrons with an impressive mashup performance. At Corretto - with its colourful interiors - none of this seems too farfetched.
Coffee shops have become the go-to for quiet moments amidst a busy schedule. At the same time, they have also become part of daily life for early risers and over-achievers (like Emily in Paris). Corretto - an Italian word that translates to something that is correct or without mistakes - is one such place and while the name might have its origin in Italy, it somehow also reminds you of a French street corner café with a twist.
A young woman made herself comfortable at a table in the corner, pulling out a book from her bag. An older man sat down at one of the outside tables and after ordering an Americano, he gently flapped open the newspaper as another lady took a seat right beside the coffee station - clearly content with her coffee and Kindle. It seems that Corretto might just be the place where you would want to start your weekly reading, meditating or
planning. It's the perfect spot for self-reflection and good coffee, as well as delectable cuisine (and a bit of people watching).
The eatery's round, baby blue tables are jotted around the restaurant with succulent-filled pots making for the perfect table decor. They utilise The Club Retail Centre's courtyard for some additional outside seating - ideal for families with young children who might want to explore the centre's recently added jungle
Breakfast includes the options of beautifully plated Ricotta Flapjacks with Berry Compote and Honey (which they effortlessly split in half for the kids), delectable Eggs Benedict and a unique offering of Eggs Regalita (smoked salmon on a toasted English muffin with poached eggs and a creamy yoghurt sauce). The freshly squeezed orange juice and Americanos also come highly recommended and be careful, as you might not be able to refuse a piece of their baked cheesecake.
Corretto opens at 06:30 during the week and you can pop in any time from 07:00 over weekends. Keep an eye out for some exciting décor changes that will soon start taking shape. H Q

ODuring a recent visit to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, we stumbled upon Fable Restaurant –an eatery that took us completely by surprise. In a good way, of course. After initially driving past while on the hunt for a humble lunch spot, we quickly Googled the menu, only to realise that we would have to turn back. Fable
floored us merely with its façade and we were instantly hooked.
As we drove in, it was clear that the owners had had a set idea of what this dining destination should be. Behind the restaurant, we found parking for days, which we later realised caters for events and happenings that take place here from time to time. And, as you walk towards the entrance, beautifully landscaped gardens stretch out to your left, with vegetable and herb gardens, edible flowers and streams that calm the senses, setting the scene for a dining experience of note.
Enjoy a special romantic dinner for two under the stars in the beautiful Fable Gardens! It will cost R750 for the two of you - which we think is very reasonableand it will include a gourmet picnic basket and a bottle of wine. To book, visit www.midlandsfable.co.za.
Fable offers two restaurant options – the Fable Taproom (from where you’ll be rolling in pizza dough and ale) and the Fable Eatery, which walks out into the gardens, has a kiddies’ seating area with bespoke activities, a lovely light family atmosphere, a carefully
curated shop and divine cuisine.
They opened their doors in October 2022 and is therefore still rather new to the Midlands’ dining scene, yet upon our visit one could hardly find a table for two. The black and white checkered floors and wooden tables give it a farm-style feel and the menu is filled with all kinds of exciting options, with colours that reflect their gardens and tastes of the changing seasons. Whilst the food is delicious and beautifully garnished, they refer to their menu as humble and simple, with honest food.
“Back to basics, done really well.”
Whether you sit inside, or outside in the plantwalled courtyard, you will find the setting to be tranquil and inviting. Be sure to take a stroll through the gardens after your meal. We simply loved the subtle sounds of water trickling down cleverly designed streams, birds fluttering by and promenading beneath kiwicovered pergolas.

Located at Howick’s popular Yard 41, The Treatery is a Midlands must. While their breakfasts are to die for and their couches are perfect for a morning read, they also have a lovely dinner menu with some brilliant options for a date night, special occasions or even family meals. Tip: Their homemade pastas are always special and their Pork Belly is known to be very popular. And, for those who need to get some emails out, they do have WiFi.
Q @midlandstreatery
Open seven days a week, the Upper Highway Bona Terra Café boasts wholesome breakfasts and lunches including salads, wraps, nachos, freshly baked cakes and scones and the perfect cup of coffee. In addition to a wide variety of menu items, they also have a lovely kiddies’ play area, complete with a doll house, jungle gym and a huge sandpit. Dogs are also welcome at this beautiful farm-to-table-type café with lots of outdoor space.

THE BARN OWL
Keen on some coffee and delicious freshly baked goods with a view? The Barn Owl – with its unique architectural features and minimalist fitout – brings simplicity and serenity together in one spectacular space. Here, you can plonk down on a couch as the kids run out to play and while you indulge in a flat white – beautifully plated on a wooden tray – the Curry’s Post farm’s horses might just come and say hi. They also have additional coffee shop locations in Florida Road and Mitchell Park.

KZNSA SHOP
Located at the KZNSA Gallery in Durban, this shop houses various products by locally based independents, small enterprises, designers, crafters and artists. While you will also be able to shop online on www.shop.kznsagallery.co.za/collections, we do recommend a visit to the actual shop where you can browse through numerous unique items – from fashion and scatter cushions to beautiful ceramics by Nindya Bucktowar and handmade accessories by Ruth Rankin.
THE RUBY ORCHARD
Probably one of our favourite shops in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, The Ruby Orchard is not only brilliantly located, but it also boasts the most beautiful homeware, furniture, fashion and gifts. The shop is based in the same centre as The Treatery (Yard 41), which also boasts a nursery and other restaurants with the most beautiful views across the valley.

Groundcover has certainly covered some ground over the years, having been founded by Justin and Amanda McCarthy in 1990. You’ll find their 100-year-old farm shop (their primary shop and factory) on their farm in Curry’s Post, but they’ve since expanded with shops in Ballito and Hillcrest too.
The shop is visited by people from around the world who come to admire the magnificence of the Midlands and who want to see how their shoes are made. From belts and purses to sandals and handbags, Groundcover’s got you covered when it comes to lifestyle and travel accessories.
P.S. Also keep an eye out for Peter Hall’s The Elves and the Shoemaker sculpture just outside of the shop – a fitting landmark for this historical leather shoe shop.

While certainly not the fanciest bar in town, it’s certainly one of the oldest in the area and one that has loads of stories to tell. Located in a heritage building that is linked to Queen Victoria’s carpenter, this old English pub instantly transports you to days gone by. Enjoy a beer, a glass of wine (filled to the brim) or a G&T at this historic bar and couple it with a typical pub grub like Bangers and Mash.

WOODSTONE
New to the area, this lovely wine-inspired restaurant in Howick comes with a menu filled with dishes one often craves for. While it poses as the perfect winter venue, it also has ample seating outside for those hot Midlands afternoons when a cold beer or a dry Rosé is the only thing that could make things right. On rainy days, you’re in for a treat with coffee from their favourite roasters, Manna Roastery.
P.S. You can even bring your own wine.

No matter how often I get to spend time in the lowveld, my wish is always threefold. I want a true African thunderstorm.
One that turns the tree trunks black. I want at least one night with clear skies, with the milky way splattered against the night’s pitch-black canvas as if its Painter had used an almost empty spray can. Lastly, I want a warm, sunny day for drinks by the pool and the smell of sunscreen that lingers into the early evening as the fires get lit for a proper ‘bosveld braai.’ As we drove into the brand-new Qwabi Private Game Reserve, that was once again my wish.
Clouds of the migrating Brown-veined White Butterflies welcomed us as we drove through the gates and in the distance, things looked promising for a late afternoon thunderstorm. The Waterberg was showcasing it’s most magnificent colours once again and it was good to be back.
Owned by a family from the UAE, Qwabi Private Game Reserve had been used privately for more than a decade. However, with such a large accommodation offering, it only made sense for them to open their gates to the public. The family has since taken hands with Newmark Hotels and after R120 million’s worth of renovations, the first of three lodges - Letamo Lodge - was launched just before the festive season. They welcomed their very first guests on 15 December 2022. Letamo Lodge has more than fifty rooms, including deluxe, premium and luxury rooms,
as well as interleading family rooms and a room specially equipped for guests in wheelchairs.
In addition to Letamo Lodge, which is a family friendly lodge with loads of activities and a kiddies’ play room for kids, Qwabi will soon also be launching and additional two lodges. The 25-room Babohi will be a more exclusive adults-only lodge (complete with beds that can turn into whichever view you would like to wake up to) and Semela will mainly focus on group bookings, corporate getaways and special events, offering 24 rooms.
The Marula tree has some interesting significance in the Tsonga culture. The first fruit that drop are given to the king, whereafter they make beer to respectfully present to him.
The tree is also known as the marriage tree in the Tsonga culture. Labola is negotiated under it, and it’s also under its leafy canopy that Tsonga couples get married. Furthermore, the Marula tree also acts as mediator. When a married couple has issues, they get tied to the tree back-to-back, which forces them to work out their issues.
Home to the big 5, Qwabi is located on a 11 000-hectare piece of land in in Limpopo’s Rooiberg region. They have recently introduced female elephants to the reserve and hope to bring elephant bulls in soon. The rhino protection unit is of the highest standard with veterinarian, Dr Andre Uys at the steer. According to him, the Waterberg is currently the country's stronghold for rhinos,
having lost only thirteen of the species over the past five years.
Qwabi is also home to beautiful and unique bird species. Summer is, of course, also the best time for birders, since all the migrant birds from Europe and Africa come flocking in. In a matter of two days, we got to spot the Forktail Drongo, Starlings, the Diederik Cuckoo, European Bee Eaters, Knob Bill Ducks, Violet-backed Starlings, the Lilac Breasted Roller, Sunbirds, Booboos and the Woodlands Kingfisher among others.
Opening Qwabi up to the public was (and will continue to be) a huge commitment to conservation and a very welcome economic investment for towns like Bela Bela, Thabazimbi and Rooiberg. According to Dr Uys there have also been some very constructive conversations around linking Qwabi with surrounding properties like Marakele and Welgevonden, which will strengthen conservation efforts and allow more space for wild species to roam happily and freely.
Follow the cue of the Brown-veined White Butterflies and breathe in the fresh air of the Waterberg at Qwabi. H

You might know it for its beaches and the influx of Joburgers over December, but we’ve got ten more reasons for you to visit Plettenberg Bay. While Plettenberg Bay has gained popularity as the destination for beach holidays and Matric getaways, its six Blue Flag beaches are certainly not all we should be raving about.
The hotel’s restaurant is elegantly decorated with mainly shades of white and accents of blue –typical ocean-inspired hues that create a calming atmosphere. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are served here, but it is dinner that is truly magical.
The Plettenberg’s restaurant will be hosting a Valentine’s Day dinner this year, with magnificent views, a glass of bubbly and a selection of culinary delights from their á la carte menu. Bookings can be made on 044 533 2030 or on their website: www.theplettenberghotel.com.
If you’re one for red meat (even by the sea) you’re certainly in for a treat at Nguni Restaurant. The restaurant is based is a historical monument, so be sure to ask the owners, Jacqui and Natalie, for some stories.
Treat yourself to a stay at one of three Liz McGrath properties. The Plettenberg is located just above Lookout Beach. Previously the old Lookout Hotel, this property was renovated by the late Liz McGrath - one of only a few female hoteliers to own her own hotels.
We stayed in one of the corner suites with Indian Ocean views from two sides, making for the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets. The hotel has lots to offer and while the beach is close, you might find yourself lingering by the pool instead - cocktail in hand - while taking in the magnificent ocean vistas.
We were treated to some lovely wines from the local Kay & Monty Vineyards, pairing well with the delectable cuisine that Chef Kyle and his team prepared. Our seven-course meal has us mesmerised, and it is truly something we can recommend if you are ever in the area.
Also be sure to treat yourself to a massage at the hotel’s dedicated Fresh Wellness Spa.
Q @theplettenbergThe Plettenberg’s proximity to Lookout Beach was an absolute bonus. Should you feel uncomfortable walking down to the beach solo, there are guards who will kindly escort you. People walk and run up and down this long stretch of beach, making the most of the fresh morning air, or the glistening waves when the setting sun’s rays hit the water.
Speaking of walking and running, a hike at the popular Robberg Nature Reserve is also a must.
The World Heritage Site boasts 360-degree views across the Indian Ocean and allows you to truly submerge yourself in nature with a half- or full hike around the Robberg mountain. Spot (and smell) the seals down under and keep an eye out for sharks and whales from the top. Bring along your birding list and tick off a couple from the area, and identify indigenous plants like the Bitou bush, Everlastings (Sewejaartjies) and wild rosemary.
While everything on the menu is mouth-watering and beautifully plated –often in big bowls to be shared amongst yourselves – the Bobotie Springrolls were undoubtedly a favourite.
Q @ngunirestaurantThis retreat type of destination boasts numerous facets that come together to provide a holistic experience. Kwendalo (which means ‘of nature’) focuses on the six key dimensions of wellness, including spiritual, social, emotional, physical, environmental and mental wellness. Their Green Café was recently launched and here you can indulge in meals made by wholefood chef, Yolande van Papendorp from fresh, estate-grown produce. Tip: Be sure to take a walk through their lovely herb garden, and remember to ask about their music therapy.
Mungo is located on a lovely piece of land filled with various unique clothing, coffee, chocolate, wine and décor shops. What you might not have known, is that the Mungo Weaving Mill - an actual working museum - is open to the public, showcasing how the weaving process has evolved over the years. You’ll even be able to show your kids the spinning wheel they now only read about in books! Be sure to pop in at their shop as well – the perfect local gift shop.
Q @mungodesignLuka Vineyards forms part of South Africa’s smallest wine route, the Plett Wine Route. We had a wine pairing lunch there, and their sparkling wine impressed us most. The Plett Wine Route certainly did not become known as the Bubbly Route for nothing. Luka Vineyards’ food was elegantly plated and delicious, including lovely summer salads and tapas for the table.
Q @lukavineyardsKeurbooms River Ferries is one of the most underrated experiences around Plett. Our skipper, Russel had so much knowledge about the river, the indigenous forest and nature in general that we could not stop listening as he gently steered us up the Keurbooms River. There are numerous riverside beaches where you can get off and explore and even bask in the sun for a bit before heading back to the lagoon. There are well-maintained ablution facilities, picnic tables and dustbins - all ready to use. In summer, these are occupied rather quickly and since they can only be reached by boat, you’ll need to be clever about reserving your spot!
Plettenberg Bay and surrounds are certainly not limited to days on the beach. H

of not only the planning and the journey, but also the naming of the space. &Kin refers to Crooks and his family – a mean team when it comes to being creative and thinking out of the box.

Whether it’s through hints of the past that get brought to light with furniture or décor pieces, or aromas that encourage time travel, fond family memories are literally mortared into &Kin - a newly launched events venue on the grounds of The Old Mushroom Farm in the KwaZuluNatal Midlands.
At the launch of the brand-new building, architect-owner Nick Crooks and his wife, Mandy shared the opening of the longanticipated space with their children, friends from the area and some media. Crooks is famous for his high ceiling designs and with this project, his family formed an integral part
&Kin’s red brick building includes a large hall with longish tables and vintage-looking chairs that take you back to church bazaars and pancakes. The lighting plays an integral role in the space, offering a dash of modernity amidst interiors that tend to leave you nostalgic. This space can be made into almost anything with a minimalist feel to it that invites those who utilise it to use their imaginations and wave their wands to turn it into whatever they’d like it to be.
Crooks had his mind set on a certain window style for the venue, which initially came with lots of challenges but ultimately had an intricate part in making the space what it is today. The black-paned, oval-shaped windows
There is also the &Kin Boardroom - a second space next to the hall - which lends itself to more intimate gatherings and meetings, with lovely vintage pressed ceilings and interesting windows that have been designed to stand out.

The luxury car market is a small but significant segment of the overall automotive industry. Sales of luxury cars have been on the rise in recent years, driven by factors such as increasing global wealth, financing options, and government incentives. The market is highly competitive, with a wide range of manufacturers and models vying for buyers. In the coming years, the luxury car market is expected to continue growing, driven by factors such as rising wealth, improving economic conditions, and technological advancements. As more people around the world become wealthier, they are
increasingly looking at acquiring high-end vehicles. This is particularly true in emerging markets such as China, where a growing middle class is driving demand for luxury cars.
Another factor driving luxury car sales is the increasing availability of financing options. Many luxury car manufacturers now offer financing and leasing options, making it easier for consumers to purchase these vehicles.
Luxury vehiclestypically defined by their price - represent a small percentage of total global car sales, but account for a large portion of the total revenue.
In January 2023, luxury car brands made their 2022 global sales data public and, impressively, they all show record growth.
Despite carrying an average price tag of around $534 000 (about R9.1m), Rolls-Royce reported record sales for the luxury car manufacturer in 2022. While Bentley Motors sold a record 15 174 vehicles (up 4% from the previous year’s 14 659), Lamborghini shipped 9 233 automobiles across the globe - a 10% increase from the previous year. Bugatti also ended up breaking their annual record, with 80 new vehicles shipped worldwide.
“The distribution of wealth within a nation or region has an impact on the luxury car market, which typically follows broader economic trends,” according to Statista.com. “Owning a luxury car is regarded as a status symbol, and because they are expensive, there is a limit on who can afford them and how many may be purchased. MercedesMaybach, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Cadillac, and Lincoln will continue to dominate this market's sales.”
The US dominated Rolls Royce sales, with America continuing to be its leading market with almost 35% of sales. Lockdowns due to Covid-19 in China (the second-largest market for Rolls Royce) caused a "single-digit decline" in sales. Asia Pacific, America and Europe were the significant markets for Bentley, and if you’re hoping to get your grubby little paws on a new Lamborghini this year, prepare to be placed on an 18-month waiting list.
Looking ahead, the luxury car market is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. Factors like increasing wealth, improving economic conditions, and the growing popularity of SUVs are all expected to drive sales. Additionally, advancements in technology such as electric and autonomous vehicles are expected to further boost demand for luxury cars.
With the increase in demand for luxury cars in 2022, the timing seemed fitting to launch the Maserati Grecale in Johannesburg.
The newest model in the Italian automaker's line-up gives away their audacious aspirations for the luxury SUV market. There are two ‘mild hybrids’ - the GT and Modena - each with a 48 volt belt starting generator for when extra power is needed, as well as the extremely exciting Trofeo, which features a 3.0 litre twin-turbo V-6 engine.
The Grecale is a striking mix of traditional Maserati design elements, contemporary design and technology. It is priced in the mid-range of the luxury car market, and packs some serious punch in terms of performance, aesthetics, and technology.
The interior offers complete luxury with leather upholstery, a full infotainment system, and a host of advanced safety features, including lane assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.
The combination of performance, luxury, technology, and cutting-edge features, is sure to afford the Grecale a spot as one of the more sought after models in the luxury car market.
This SUV is sure to turn heads. H
Salt River is Cape Town’s newest trendy residential address, and The Spectrum is the latest addition to the once industrial area’s burgeoning skyline.
Formerly regarded as Cape Town’s industrial epicentre because of its proximity to the CBD, Salt River is now home to a growing number of businesses, residential properties and schools. It also offers easy access to world-class attractions like Signal Hill, the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
• Pet-friendly facilities
• Access-controlled apartments
• High-speed internet connectivity
• Coffee bar
• Co-working spaces
• Gym
• Electric vehicle charging points
• Storage facilities
The Spectrum – on which the developers break ground this year – is a 306-apartment residential building. Here, smart design integrating contemporary architecture and eye-catching pops of colour meet affordability. Units are north facing, with Table Mountain as backdrop and Table Bay ahead. Just off Nelson Mandela Boulevard, the site’s central position offers easy access into the Cape Town CBD, the Southern Suburbs and the N2 outbound towards Cape Town International Airport. It’s also minutes from the N1.
Crowning the building is a raised swimming pool, offering spectacular views of Cape Town’s famous mountains and busy harbour. The building also houses a trendy ground floor coffee shop that will cater for its residents, and it is within walking distance of trendy ‘Obz’ and The Old Biscuit Mill. It ticks many boxes for the Millennial property buyer.
Emanuel Nicolas Germanis, CEO of Cape Town-based real estate sales, letting, and property development agency Evo Property says that the area has grown steadily over
the past 10 years, with significant growth over the past 24 months. “With the entry of American listed edutech company 2U and Amazon up the road, we have yet to see what the area has ahead for investors,” he says. “Much like Salt River, its neighbouring suburbs - Woodstock and Observatory - are booming and attracting private education, trendy restaurants and celebrated local brands that are forming a community where residents are choosing to live in rather than drifting from the inner city due to unaffordability.”
Germanis says the property is particularly attractive to the Millennial market as they consider the property’s relevance to them from a home or investment perspective. They prefer efficient, well-priced, centrally located and accessible spaces. “With The Spectrum we have created smaller, yet efficient spaces that are priced competitively, yet do not comprise at all on quality, centrality or amenities.”
Many are purchasing apartments at The Spectrum for investment and rental purposes. Germanis says the most lucrative property investment products globally are those that are turnkey and flexible. “At The Spectrum, we offer investor landlords the option to either long-term let their apartments through Evo Property or shortterm via Nitely. Maison and Marble offers each purchaser the choice of buying a welldesigned, curated and affordable furniture pack,” he says. “
Indicators show that 75% of early buyers are purchasing apartments at the property for investment purposes; the balance being bought by residents for immediate occupation. “What I have found very interesting is that many investors are buying for their kids to use the property when they get to the tertiary education stage, but are intent on keeping it rented out once their child graduates,” says Germanis. “This is a similar purchasing philosophy to those investors who buy into student-concentrated areas such as Stellenbosch. The sweetener here for landlords is that there are several educational options in close proximity – never mind the large labour force looking for an apartment to live in, near to their places of work”.
With accessibility and flexibility at The Spectrum’s core, micro, studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units are priced from R595,000. H
