sn't it funny how nature sometimes surprises us with the most fitting symbols? It's the one place where you can find examples of growth, renewal, strength, peace and hope.
I chose to write my last Editor's Letter for Hello Lifestyle Magazine from a spot that holds meaning. So, here I am, with a Timbavati sunrise in view and a steaming cup of coffee next to me. The wonderfully cool winter air makes my skin tingle and as I look over the thicket into the hue-changing sky, the silence of the bush is tangible.
Today's sunrise is special. It symbolises not only a new day, but also a new chapter. As I say goodbye to a magazine and an incredibly close-knit team that helped shape me into who I am today, I am not only excited about the personal journey ahead, but also the continuous growth and expansion of the Hello Lifestyle brand.
As Devi Sankaree Govender so aptly states in my interview with her (find it on page 10), sometimes you
need to step out of a role and find a new role where you can start from the bottom again. Life is about growth; not about being comfortable.
To many more sunrises that allow us to chase our passions, build our dreams and grow.

ANGELA WOOD, FEATURES AND SUB EDITOR
Sleep is deeply satisfying in winter, so indulge in lengthy, extended morning and evening rituals like gratitude journaling, yoga and meditation, bubble baths and books. Knitting is a hot favourite season pastime (shhh, don’t tell!), shared with my cat, the kids and a Netflix series on the couch.
VICTORIA HILL, JOURNALIST AND SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER
Winter is not complete without a hottie (aka - hot water bottle) - mine literally travels with me everywhere! Stock up with all manner of cold prevention - a stylish new top blanket; an electric one for the underlay. Service the fireplace and keep the wood burning. A steamy bowl of soup is the perfect antidote and, never forget how a hot chocolate can make the world go round!
OLIVIA GILBERT, ACCOUNT MANAGER
Holidays give added family time, so grab the opportunity this winter to carve space to reconnect with loved ones doing things you’ll all enjoy (think sunny outdoor picnics and fun family hikes) and making memories to last. Vital for winter is moisturised skin, so invest in good products, rich oils and lotions to combat exposure to the dry air.
JANE HILL, PERSONAL & ADMIN ASSISTANT
Baking endless batches of delicious cookies or curling up for hours with a great book always helps endear winter to me. Candlelight is a great way to set a wintery mood as you settle down with a blankie and a must-see movie to relax and unwind.
DEBBIE FARRELL, DESIGNER
Cold weather is perfect for staying in and getting creative while sitting next to a crackling fireplace. I love setting up a cosy corner to sew something new or start a crochet project. Nature walks with my dogs are still a must - the winter light is magic!

Devi GOVENDER
Dad’s cheers, an incredible career and (almost) no fear
This year marks five years since she’s left Carte Blanche to explore new avenues and perhaps, herself. She is still chasing crooks, but now on her self-produced The Devi Show. Of course, knowing that she’s chasing criminals and seeking justice for those who’d been wronged while we’re most probably testing out the menu of a newly launched restaurant, puts us on a bit of a guilt trip. But, then we remind ourselves that some people (or most?) weren’t cut from the same cloth as Devi Sankaree Govender. She’s one of the country’s top journalists, after all. We sat down with her at the beautiful Aurum Restaurant’s Wine Library to do our own bit of journalistic research into what it takes to be Devi.
Like the crooks she’s been interrogating for the biggest chunk of her career, we were also almost caught off guard by how small this fiery journalist really is. Still, when she walks into a room, her confident presence demands respect and we can only imagine the thoughts running through a guilty man’s mind when she stands in front of him - evidence in hand - and he realises that he’s been caught. Devi Sankaree Govender owns the space she walks into and with her natural outspokenness, she’s certainly not afraid to say it as it is.
A SECRET POWER FROM HER PA
The 5th generation South African grew up in rural KwaZulu-Natal’s Umzinto. Her parents had only two daughters and with her being the eldest, she says her dad had given her the ultimate superpower by raising her as his son. “I was lucky, because I didn’t grow up with a brother. It was just my sister and I. So, we never had that situation in our house where our brother was the king. We were my dad’s princesses and we could do anything.”
She also had a close relationship with her grandfather - a farmer. “I always say: ‘Ek’s ’n boeremeisie,’” Devi proudly throws some Afrikaans into the mix. “Because it’s true.” Her grandfather was the type of person who always gave back to his communitysomething that clearly runs in the family.
BIG DREAMS AND DAD AS CHEERLEADER
Devi watched the first-ever Carte Blanche at the age of 15. While she’d never seen televised investigative journalism before, she told her parents there and then that one day, she was going to work for those people. Many were skeptical about her ambitious dream, commenting on her accent and that she “looks too Indian.” In fact, few believed that she would ever be able to be
on a national channel. Still, her parents supported her dream and one could only wonder - had her dad not raised her as his son - if Devi would have gone down a different path. “When you’re Indian, you’re going to become a doctor,” she explains. But, the go-getter girl from Umzinto, who played with fire engines on cars, had always been different. And she preferred it that way. “Different was always good.”
Even in an era when children were meant to be seen, not heard, Devi was an incredibly inquisitive, talkative child. “I always had questions. About everything and anything. And it was only later - when I read Malcholm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point - that I realised that by the time I’d gotten to radio (which was my first job) I had done the 10 000 hours!” She laughs as she remembers how her dad - now 83 and sadly diagnosed with advanced Dementia - would say she talks a lot. She also vividly remembers him sitting in an audience with the biggest smile on his face as he looked at her. “It doesn’t matter what it was. For speech contests (I did a lot of that when I was at school); school concertshe was there.” While her late mom was the bedrock of their family, her dad was the one who made the decisions and granted her permission to be who she needed to be.

I think I’m really good at chasing crooks. It makes me want to get up in the morning. I obsess about my crooks. I like roleplay even before the interview happens. It’s crazy! They’re like the true love of my life."
COVID’S INNINGS ON DEVI’S DESTINY
Growing up, Devi soon learned two important things: That she was good enough and that her love language was service. It comes as no surprise then that she made her dream of working for Carte Blanche a reality even before she turned 30. She worked there for 18 years before taking the leap of faith and starting The Devi Show, which now airs on both eTV and ENCA. “I kept feeling like I was starting to lose my excitement and passion. You must be happy to go to work. Especially on a weekend, because with journalism you work 24/7.” She says that the confusing part comes in when you reach your dream too early. “Because now, what’s the next dream?” In the back of her mind, she always knew that she wanted her own show. She wanted to be an executive producer, where she could manage a budget and pour her soul into something that’s her own.
Her time at Carte Blanche came to an end just as the Covid-19 pandemic struck and she had just joined eMedia to do a talk show. “Who was I going to put on the couch with social distancing?” she asks. But, her confidence and self-belief proved its power and in the middle of hard lockdown, she swapped the talk show for a reality show, chasing crooks. “I think I’m really good at chasing crooks. It makes me want to get up in the morning. I obsess about my crooks. I like roleplay even before the interview happens. It’s crazy! They’re like the true love of my life,” she says, and she hasn’t looked back since.
Apart from the thrill of catching crooks, Devi has always been someone who wants to leave things better than the way in which she found it. If not, she at least wants to be remembered for trying. She also wants to make people smarter and through The Devi Show, she gets to do both.
DID YOU KNOW?
Devi is actually a qualified Afrikaans teacher! “I think I’ve been a teacher my whole life. I like taking difficult concepts, making it simple and explaining it.”
TO THE YOUTH WHO WANT TO BRING CHANGE
Devi believes it’s harder to be a young person these days. “It’s harder to find a job, money’s scarce, our social fabric is torn, the majority of young people grow
up in single-headed households (normally just a mom) – it’s tough.” On the other hand, while she had to wait for a radio or television station to give her a job, today’s young people are fortunate enough to have cell phones. “That’s your TV station, that’s your radio station, and you launch yourself from that. But, understand that it takes hard work.” She also emphasises that you cannot be a one-trick pony. You need to know what you want to do and what you need to do to get there. Diversifying yourself is future proofing yourself.
She latched onto another superpower very early in her life: Finding your happy place. “What are you good at?” she asks into the room, now filled with yummy treats specially prepared by Aurum’s talented chef. She suggests you find that one thing that you’re not only good at but also enjoy so much that it doesn’t even feel like work. “If you find where that spot is for you, pour everything you have into it.”
DON’T GET TOO COMFORTABLE
According to the former Carte Blanche presenter, being a head girl at school wouldn’t get you far when you start working. “You’re the bottom of the pile and you’ve got to work yourself up. It’s a seniority thing. You’ve got to be able to take that, convert it and work yourself up to a point where you are the best of the best. But, in saying that, the good thing I took out of that is: Whenever you feel that you’re at the top, you must move from that job and find yourself another place where you’re starting at the bottom all over again. Because life is about growth. It’s not about feeling comfortable… You have to push yourself.”
Thinking back to her very first-ever interview, Devi certainly wasn’t comfortable. In fact, she says she was nervous. But, “nervous is good. Even now, nervous is good. Because if you’re not nervous, then you’ve got a fat head. And if you have a fat head, you think you’re too clever and if you think you’re too clever, then what difference are you going to make?” Devi still gets nervous, but she says it keeps her on her game.
START WITH YOUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE
She describes herself as lucky for having had a front row seat in South Africa’s history in the last 32 years of her career. It’s also with that in mind that she says: “You can’t just sit and watch things happen and do nothing about it. I don’t believe that you need a television show or a podcast or
a radio slot to bring change and to make people think differently and to have other viewpoints. We have our own circles of influence and that’s where it starts. Your friend group; your family - start there. Your cousin group; your colleagues. It’s just about throwing out other ways of thinking and while words have power, we often want someone else to have that power and forget that we have it ourselves.”
THE DANGERS OF DOING WHAT DEVI DOES
The reality of hard journalism is that it’s not always safe. Devi has been assaulted before. “It was in 2005, on a story for Carte Blanche on a group of appliance repairmen in Durban,” she says. “Absolute skelms. It was the third story I’d done on them. We sent in a washing machine and marked the parts and then they tried to charge us for the parts - it was a consumer story. And when I went to confront them, I walked into their store and they locked us up in the store and beat us up.”
Over the years, she’s gotten smarter in how she approaches certain interrogations, though and she’s learned to calm people down. And, while she isn’t intimidated by size, she believes that being so small herself has been beneficial many times. “They would hold themselves back and think: ‘Ag, she’s so cute, man,’” she jokes.
In the end, Devi is proudly South African and positively so. This is her home. And, amidst all the chaos she gets to see every day, she also gets to see and feel the magic of Ubuntu. Somehow, her father saw that twinkle in her eye and he allowed her to fly. Now, she gets to have an opportunity to try and make the world a better place - one caught-out crook at a time. H

DEVI’S TIPS FOR A YOUNG JOURNALIST:
1. Know that the research never stops.
2. Keep asking questions. There’s no such thing as a stupid question. Every question gets you closer to understanding something.
3. “The one thing I’m learning from young people now, is that they take care of their mental health. You don’t have to kill yourself doing this job, but you need to stay true to it.”
4. Be yourself, because that’s what’s going to win the game.

DEEP BLUE
Veruska De Vita is a learner free diver and open-water swimmer who has just launched her first book, Deep Blue. As the name suggests, the work is essentially a love letter to the sea, exploring humans’ deep connection with it. Naturally, she also speaks of the bliss of swimming, diving, dipping and simply being in the vast, blue ocean’s salty waters. During the process of writing the book, she spoke to various ocean lovers who find healing and wellness in swimming groups and cold-water immersion, scientists who study its complexities, elite athletes who swim super-human distances along the coast and free divers who explore the ocean’s depths in the limited timespan of one breath. THE SCIENCE OF BREATHING
A DISCIPLINE EVERYONE IN THE KNOW IS TURNING TO
The latest health science suggests that daily breathing practices can energise both body and mind. Even for simple relaxation, focused and controlled breathing has the power to transform your quality of life.
THE RHYTHM OF THE BREATH
The old yogic saying goes: “Life is in the breath - he who only half breathes, half lives.” Indeed, our breath mirrors our physical and emotional states. Poor posture (often linked to low energy or depression) leads to shallow breathing, while erratic breathing patterns can reflect anxiety, stress and exhaustion.
“When we are happy and relaxed, breathing is long, slow and deep,” says Nandiva Ananda, founder of the ISHTA School of Yoga & Health. A teacher for over 40 years, she explains that inhalation brings in energy, breath retention distributes it, and exhalation relaxes and feeds the body. “When we change the rhythm of the breath, we alter our emotional and psychological states.”
BREATHWORK AND PERFORMANCE
In yoga, breath control is known as pranayama. The physical benefits include a slower heart rate, increased oxygen, reduced tension and enhanced mental clarity - all
valuable tools in today’s fast-paced world. Public speaker, wellness leader and highperformance coach, Ronen Aires, says that while high-performing individuals slush their way through a world of demand and expectation, breathwork gives them the tools to reset their minds and bodies. “Breathwork is an active, conscious practice that stimulates blood flow and wakes up the nervous system. The results are remarkable,” he says.
MINDFUL BREATHING
Mindfulness coach Mark Joseph notes that many people unconsciously hold their breath. “Begin by observing without trying to change it,” he says. “Then gradually synchronise the inhalation and exhalation. Once they match in length, deeper breathing can begin. Breathing well is the first step to well-being.”
Practice your breathing techniques with these steps. Lying down in a relaxed position:
1. Breathe in to the count of four.
2. Retain your breath for four counts.
3. Exhale to the count of four.
4. Remain without breath for four counts.
Repeat for five minutes.
PRACTICE BRINGS RESULTS
Consistency is key. “Pick a breathing technique and stay with it,” Mark says. “There’s not much books can teach you; the practice alone bears the fruit. For Nandiva, breathwork is the gateway to meditation. “Through the breath, we grab the mind. When the thinking is still, we spontaneously move into meditation. Mediation itself - the benefits of which are multitudinous - cannot be taught, but it’s practices can be.” H

SAMA VRITTI PRANAYAMA
GET LIFTED
PHYSICALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY
Luxury beauty and aesthetics is an everevolving world - one in which looking youthful is no longer left to chance.
While non-surgical favourites like Botox and dermal fillers are still the golden standard in anti-ageing solutions, new injectables, volumisers, bio-stimulation techniques and cutting-edge laser science promise amazing natural, age-defying results with minimal downtime.
Here’s what you need to know about the latest aesthetic trends - not only for luminous allure, but - as we've discovered - added emotional and psychological benefits too.
BOTOX AND FILLERS
Botulinum Toxin, aka Botox, is a neurotoxin that works by blocking nerve signals to your muscles, temporarily relaxing them and, therefore, reducing wrinkles. Typically lasting three to four months, too much Botox or poorly placed injections can lead to the classic ‘frozen face’, making it difficult to express emotion. It’s vital that Botox (and/ or Dysport) and popular fillers like Restalyn are administered by trained specialists for the best results.
Medical doctor and leading aesthetician
Maureen Allem, owner and director of The Skin Renewal Clinic, explains that if Botox is the ‘chill pill’ that relaxes your wrinkles, fillers are the ‘interior decorators’ that plump, sculpt and restore lost volume.
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected into the wrinkles themselves and, typically, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers are the safest and offer natural movement and gradual results that last two years or more. While bruising and swelling may be common, it’s usually short-lived.
According to Allem, ‘filler fatigue’ (when doctors simply keep plumping the wrinkles) has been replaced with new volumising and biostimulation technology that works with your own body’s cell-to-cell communication for longer lasting results. Incorporating the
skin's own natural, regenerative processes, stem cells, white blood cells and other active exosomes can also be injected.
MICRONEEDLING
Using small, sterilised needles to prick the skin, microneedling is a popular treatment for generating new collagen and improving the skin’s tone, firmness and texture. It helps with hormone-related pigmentation, scars, dark spots and wrinkles. Dermapen microneedling - adjusted to different depths of fractional skin punctures - is all natural and rejuvenating from within.
LATEST INJECTABLES
Taking it one step further, the Vampire Facial - a type of microneedling that incorporates Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) - is a process where your own blood is withdrawn and spun in a central centrifuge to restore its growth factors and improve the flow of blood back to the face when it’s returned.
One up on this in trend even, says Allem, is PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin) - another natural, autologous treatment which, similar to PRP, involves isolating stem cells, white blood cells, platelets and other growth factors from the blood for a higher concentration and a stronger release of these growth factors.
Polynucleotide treatments, or ‘salmon sperm facials’, are also increasing in popularity, either applied topically or administered via injection with amazing skin repair results.
LASER LIGHT THERAPY
The new generation Pico laser, the latest laser light available, uses ultrashort pulses of energy that, Allem explains, “literally shatters any acne, pigmentation or scarring into a million pieces and allows it to be reabsorbed by the body.” Travelling at the speed of light, wonderful improvements to the overall tone of the skin have been reported.
SELF-ESTEEM AND CONFIDENCE BOOSTERS
While ageing gracefully is certainly aspirational, we shouldn’t forget the mental and emotional lifts we can also gain in the process. “Looking great isn’t just vanity; it’s sanity,” says Allem. She explains that looking good has been proven to modulate the limbic system and positively affects the emotional centre of the brain. While she wholeheartedly believes that beauty and happiness is an inside job, it can quite easily be helped along with some bold, new, age-defying treatments. H

WHAT ARE GLP-1 AGONISTS?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a naturally occurring hormone produced in the intestines that helps to regulate blood sugar, appetite and digestion. GLP-1 agonists are medications that mimic this hormone, triggering similar effects in the body - most notably, reducing appetite, increasing feelings of fullness and slowing down stomach emptying.
Originally developed to manage type 2 diabetes, these medications now have a growing role in obesity treatment. Wellknown brand names include Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Saxenda.
Aside from clear benefits and some sideeffects, the rise of GLP-1 medications has also brought unexpected cosmetic side effects and social controversies. ‘Ozempic face’ - a term coined by a cosmetic dermatologist and widely circulated onlinerefers to the gaunt or aged appearance some people experience after rapid and significant weight loss while on GLP-1 medications. Why does it happen? Well, when you lose weight - especially quickly - fat and lean muscle are lost all over the body, including the face. This facial volume loss can lead to sagging skin, hollow cheeks and a more tired or older appearance. It’s not unique to GLP-1 drugs, but the speed and visibility of the weight loss associated with these medications can make the change more dramatic and jarring.
For many, this is a cosmetic concern rather than a health issue. Solutions like dermal fillers or skin-tightening treatments can restore lost volume, but it’s something to consider before starting treatment, especially if aesthetics is a high priority.
GLP-1 AGONISTS THE WEIGHT LOSS WONDER DRUG
OR JUST HYPE?
By: Dr. Andrew Viljoen (BSc. MBChB. FCS.) Images: Tegan Smith Photography
THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY
THE GOOD: BENEFITS BEYOND WEIGHT LOSS
Effective weight loss: Clinical trials show that users can lose 10% - 20% of their body weight over time.
Improved blood sugar control: Originally designed for diabetes, these drugs help reduce blood glucose levels and may even delay progression to type 2 diabetes.
Heart health benefits: Some GLP-1 agonists have been shown to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes in people with existing cardiovascular disease.
Reduced appetite and cravings: People often report feeling fuller faster and experiencing fewer food cravings, especially for high-calorie, high-sugar foods.
THE BAD: SIDE EFFECTS AND DOWNSIDES
Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation are the most common complaints - especially when starting the medication or when increasing the dosage.
Cost and access: These drugs can be expensive and aren't always covered by medical aid (unless prescribed for diabetes or medically qualifying obesity).
Long-term commitment: Weight often returns if the medication is stopped, suggesting a need for lifelong use in many cases.
Not for everyone: People with a history of certain thyroid cancers or pancreatitis may be advised against using it.
THE UGLY: OZEMPIC FACE, HYPE & MISINFORMATION
Medication shortages: High demand has made it harder for diabetic patients to access their necessary medications.
Unregulated use: Many people are obtaining these drugs without proper medical guidance, risking side effects and complications.
Social pressure and body image issues: The popularity of these medications has fueled unrealistic body standards and led to a new form of appearance anxiety.
FINAL THOUGHTS
GLP-1 agonists are a powerful new tool in the fight against type 2 diabetes and obesity, offering hope where many traditional methods have failed. But, like all medications, they come with trade-offs - including physical, emotional and social effects.
If you're considering one of these medications, it's important to talk to a qualified healthcare provider to fully
understand the risks and benefits. The best proven long-term outcomes are achieved with a change in lifestyle habits, a tailored eating plan and an exercise program.
GLP-1 agonists are not a silver bullet. However, they’re an important piece of the puzzle. H

THE EDIBLE EVOLUTION
Canna Collective offers an upmarket and curated shopping experience for members and yes, it’s fully legitimate and legal under the new cannabis laws in South Africa.
Text and images: Supplied
There’s a quiet revolution happening at dinner tables, in handbags and on coffee trays around the world. If it’s not wrapped in foil, dipped in chocolate or shaped like a pastel gummy bear, it comes in the form of pre rolls, flowers or vapes. Welcome to the rise of cannabis edibles, ingestibles and more - a growing global trend that is redefining the way we consume cannabis and shifting the focus to wellness, dosage control and lifestyle integration.
In South Africa, this shift is cultural, but also structural. And, at the centre of this transformation is a membership-based access model that allows adult consumers to legally and safely purchase and enjoy cannabis products within the country’s current legislative framework. Leading the way is Canna Collective, one of the few cannabis clubs offering compliant THC and CBD products through both online platforms and physical kiosks in major shopping centres.
Cannabis edibles - including gummies, chocolates, capsules and beverages - have gained strong traction internationally, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic. Globally, the market was valued at over $9 billion in 2022 with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.4% to 24% between 2021 and 2025. In South Africa, the cannabis market is also seeing significant growth, with edibles accounting for a significant portion of new consumer interest. According to research by Idea Accelerator, more South Africans are seeking functional, discreet alternatives to smoking and edibles offer exactly that.
Products are pre-dosed, portable and designed for real life. It's for those managing anxiety in a demanding job, wanting to improve sleep without pharmaceuticals, or the everyday person looking to wind down with more awareness and control. In fact, there is a new class of cannabis user. They are educated, wellness-driven and looking for reliability over rebellion.
Despite the growing interest, South Africa’s regulatory landscape has been volatile. In March 2025, the Department of Health enacted a temporary ban on all cannabis edibles, citing concerns around food safety and consumer protection. The industry response was swift. Following extensive stakeholder consultation, the ban was lifted two weeks later, with the government clarifying that edibles are legal when they meet labelling, packaging and compliance guidelines. The reversal was a critical step in aligning regulation with public demand and industry professionalism.
Canna Collective has remained steadfast as a market leader, reinforcing its membership-based model as the most transparent and legally sound way to access cannabis in South Africa. They operate under the Cannabis for Private Purpose Act, 2024 and members can register online or in-store and are granted access to a curated range of products, all developed with safety, clarity and consistency in mind. Guidance on usage and dosage is available at each location and products are clearly labelled to support informed consumption.
For modern consumers, the appeal of edibles is clear: They are discreet, precise and easy to integrate into a wellness routine. Whether exploring microdosing for mental focus, using THC to aid sleep, or looking for alternatives to smoking, cannabis edibles offer a smart and legal option, as long as you access them through the right channel.
To become a member, visit tasteofcannabis.co.za/cannacollective or head to a Canna Collective or Taste of Cannabis kiosk in South Africa. H
KAREN VERMEULEN
THE LIFE OF AN ILLUSTRATOR ILLUSTRATING LIVES
#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
Award-winning illustrator, Karen Vermeulen knew she was an artist from the moment she could hold a crayon. In fact, she jokes by saying she’s still the exact same person she was as a child. “I’ve always loved drawing, painting and doing anything creative.” Apart from her dad - who'd always drawn cartoons for fun - she had a grandmother and a passionate art teacher who allowed her to develop her individual style, inspiring her to become the talented artist she is today.
While 2020 might have been a bump in the road after going solo and focusing on her illustration work, the wheels didn’t stop turning. In fact, she merely had to reinvent the wheel a little. Now, she has multiple income streams, including workshops, book cover designs, picture books and the most unique, animated portraits. Works of art that speak volumes about those who commissioned it. The cat mom even did a collab with poet, Iain S. Thomas after he’d asked if she would illustrate some of his poems - all centred around the essence of motherhood.
STORYTELLING THROUGH ART
“I loved stories as a kid,” Karen says. She also started writing her own stories as soon
as she could. These were usually inspired by what many would describe as throwaway comments, she claims, admitting to being drawn to people who give her cool phrases or catchy words.
Cementing moments artfully for those who seek her out is what makes everything worthwhile, though. “I find it so rewarding to do the commissions. It’s a piece of art just for them; their moment in time.”
LOOK AROUND
For Karen, inspiration is everywhere. While sitting down and drawing is one thing, the secret lies in training your brain and eyes to notice the things around you. “It can really be anything.” For instance, the inspiration for her upcoming children’s picture book came from a comment a friend had made about his cat!
FOR THE SAKE OF RITUALS AND HOT CROSS BUNS
The artist cherishes tradition - like with Easter - even if she doesn’t necessarily celebrate the actual holiday. “I love rituals and sharing it with people I care about,” she explains. “I also like to keep things special... I keep hot cross buns in the house over Easter and eat as many as I can. I’d have it for breakfast every
morning and when I’m maxed out, I wait for next year.”
Through her work, Karen wants to uplift people and make them feel happy. “Even when it touches on heavy subjects,” Karen adds, highlighting her own ectopic pregnancy and women’s insecurities which feature in her recently launched picture book for adults, Good Luck To Us All. She wants people to know that “who you are is okay and enough and, in fact, more interesting and exciting than being perfect.”
Find her book in selected bookstores or on Takealot.
P.S. Karen is also starting work on a children’s book in June, with her cat –Sir Henry – as the main character. H
Music boosts brain function, memory and language skills while fostering emotional expression, empathy and confidence. Through group activities like bands, it encourages teamwork and cultural awareness. Learning an instrument builds discipline and focus, supporting academic success. But, above all, music inspires creativity and joy, nurturing a lifelong appreciation for the arts and a deeper understanding of the world around us.
SCHOOL OF ROCKINSPIRING YOUTH
Recently opened in Parktown North, School of Rock is already inspiring the youth in Johannesburg to enter the world of music. Jericho Hendricks, the school’s Music Director, says: “The first thing music can teach a young person is patience. Music is something that you need to work on every single day. The second thing is teaching an appreciation for the arts. The biggest thing that we’re trying to achieve is to encourage youth to express themselves.”
1 schoolofrock.com
Sixteen-year-old Maddison
Smith is a student and band member at School of Rock.
“I felt I had the musical knowledge and just needed the instrument and an instructor to make it work and refine my skills,” she says. It's a music school that encourages her; an environment where it’s easy to make mistakes without letting it define her. Maddison adds: “Being in a band is something I’ve wanted to do, but people at school aren’t like me and they don’t really have an interest in instruments.” She believes music is something that carries you through life and that it can change your mood in an instant.
NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD ACADEMY - SHAPING PROTÉGÉS
Another musical institute dedicated to youth empowerment through the arts is the National Eisteddfod Academy (NEA) where young performers are invited to develop and showcase their artistic skills in a safe and nurturing environment.
The CEO of the NEA, Dr. Francois Van Den Berg, says: “The NEA was created with the belief that access to and participation in the arts are basic human rights, rooted in freedom of expression and creative thought. Artistic expression stirs the mind, unlocks creativity and evokes deep emotions. Through music, dance, acting, painting or writing, the arts enable people to connect with something larger than themselves.”

Grade 12 Penryn College scholar, Sinhle Mona, won the NEA’s Gold Medal in 2025, following her Most Inspiring Performer award in 2024. Her journey with music began in the school choir at age six. She remembers how this brought her a sense of joy and belonging.
“Those formative years laid the foundation for my future success and instilled in me a love for music that continues to drive me. The NEA was a turning point in my career. Through this competition, I developed a sense of discipline and perseverance that has been invaluable in my journey as a singer, allowing me to pursue my passion for music with greater purpose and direction.”

OTTIMO
SERVING FAMILIES HOME-COOKED MEALS AND MEMORIES
We walked into the old faithful for a date night just the other week.
OTTIMO’s owner, Marco Cimato, smiled at us from behind his pizza station - smoke twirling from the woodburning oven in the background. Knowing we should have made a reservation at this bustling, homy restaurant, we begged for a table for two.
PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
Established in 1992, OTTIMO Restaurant has become renowned for traditional Italian Pizza and Pasta in Joburg. With over one million pizzas sold, it is no wonder they are still going strong more than three decades later. Their menu remains classic and mostly unchanged, with a strong focus on authentic meals rather than fine dining. On it, perfect pizzas, playful pastas, superb stuffed pastas, passionate pasta al fornos, scrumptious salads and delightful desserts tempt the palate. You can also build your own pizza with just your favourite toppings and unique flavour combinations. One thing is certain: OTTIMO is not planning to change this winning hospitality recipe and we couldn’t be happier about it.
GROWING UP WITH OTTIMO
We've been frequenting OTTIMO since age two. Standing on chairs so we could see the pizza oven, Marco would give us - mere toddlers at the time - a ball of dough to keep us occupied. We copied his movements and made mis-shaped pizzas of our own. Back at the table, we would order their imported lemon and peach iced tea whilst our parents would sip on homemade sangria, poured from a jug.
Growing up, it became a Friday night ritual. Even up until the age of eighteen, OTTIMO was the place for family reunions and weekly catchups. Without fail, we'd order the same Mozzarella Cheese starter, Spaghetti Bolognese for mains and Italian Kisses for dessert every time. OTTIMO became synonymous with home; family.
RETURNING AFTER FIVE YEARS
But, life happens and for a while, we put our Friday night dinners on hold. That's until just the other week. In search of an authentic date night spot - one with a story - we remembered the memories made at OTTIMO. So, we looked them up at their new location in Bedfordview. Here, the same iced tea and
sangria was served and the Mozzerella Cheese starter with Balsamic Vinegar tasted like old times. We veered off from tradition and tried their Mexicana and Spicy Chicken pizzas, which turned out to be the best we’d had in a long time.
With similar interior hues than before, cars upon cars don the walls. Trophies and newspaper clippings from early racing days line the entrance and caps from various motoring festivals hang from the roof. Unconventional, yet unique, OTTIMO’s ambiance is intimate, cosy and most importantly, familial.
Despite visiting with someone other than close family and with date night intentions instead of family catchups, OTTIMO’s charm remain intact.
MORE THAN JUST A RESTAURANT
OTTIMO is not just about delicious and authentic Italian cuisine. It is a place where families laugh together, siblings reminisce about the past and couples and new generations follow in the tradition of creating core memories. H 1 ottimo.co.za

Stellenbosch DUSK,
As the Sun Sets, Something Inside Starts Stirring…
#HelloCapeTown by Justyn Spinner Images: Supplied
Tucked beneath a canopy of trees in the idyllic town of Stellenbosch, DUSK isn’t your typical finedining destination. It’s darker; moodier - a restaurant that hums with quiet confidence and just enough rebellion to keep things interesting.
Opened in 2022 by chefs Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin, DUSK is where culinary tradition gets turned on its head. The setting is intimate and minimal - a stage of shadows and warm light, designed to focus all attention on the 11-course tasting menu that unfolds like a storybook with a twist.
Dinner kicks off with ‘pills’ - dissolvable bursts of flavour that steer your palate toward what’s next. One moment you’re sinking your teeth into honey-glazed Japanese milk bread with coal-infused butter and the next, lifting a glass cloche to reveal a venison tartare, wreathed in smoke. Every bite is crafted with technical brilliance, yet there’s no arrogance here - only intention, creativity and a hint of nostalgia.
Here, storytelling is at the heart of it all. Oysters dressed in amasi and lemon oil; linefish swimming in salmon bone beurre blanc; desserts that clock in with prep times like ‘46 hours’ for the fig and whisky cake. Those numbers aren’t for show. They speak to the quiet, yet overarching message that this kind of flavour takes time. And heart.
The wine experience mirrors that same sense of discovery. DUSK’s ‘Pandora’s Box’ invites diners into a walk-in cellar to select a mystery crate of wines - each matched to the evening’s dishes. It’s part game, part education - and it's brilliant.
Perhaps the most revolutionary thing about DUSK, though, is what happens off the plate. Here, hospitality means caring for the people who make it all happen. From foraging retreats and transparent tip sharing to mental health support and in-house career growth, the team culture is designed to nurture.
There’s even a fermentation library - a glass-walled lab of long-aged experiments, some of which have been maturing for nearly a decade. It’s a fitting metaphor for what Badenhorst and Austin are building: A restaurant with depth, flavour and a mission to change the industry from the inside out.
DUSK isn’t just elevating Stellenbosch’s food scene - it’s redefining what fine dining can be in South Africa. Less about ego, more about emotion. Less flash, more meaning. And, just when you think you’ve figured it all out, something else flickers in the shadows. H

THE SPICE EXPERIENCE AT GOLD RESTAURANT
SALON AT DORP
The terms ‘best kept secret’ and ‘hidden gem’ get thrown around a lot, but the Salon at Dorp - the sprawling hotel near BoKaap - truly fits the description. In fact, the quirky and eclectic décor is almost more mesmerising than the incredible Table Mountain views. Though it is not licensed, one can get intoxicated on the ambience alone. KAROO WINTER WOOL FESTIVAL
3 REASONS TO MAKE THIS YOUR HALFWAY STOP
This year’s Karoo Winter Wool Festival is a must for anyone keen on experiential and educational travel. Hosted at Dwarsvlei - a working sheep farm just off the N9 highway between Middelburg and Graaff-Reinet - the festival returns for the fourth time between 3 and 5 July this year and boasts the perfect halfway stop en route to the Garden Route. If you’re interested in wool, natural fibre, the Karoo and fashion, it’s the place to be over the school holidays.
1
FASHION-LOVERS, UNITE!
Wool World, a collaboration between fashion designer, Lezanne Viviers and Hoven Designs, will be a highlight this year. It will see a carefully curated space - showcasing wool, natural fibre designs and fashion - come alive. Grab a glass of wine from Babylonstoren before entering this exhibition space and immerse yourself in a world set to stimulate all the senses.
2 AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER
Through the course of the festival, there will be various interactive experiences to engage in. Young and old will have the opportunity to learn more about the Karoo, sheep farming, experience live sheep shearing, classing, spinning and even sheepdog demonstrations.
Furthermore, there will be nine different workshops to choose from, sponsored by SAMIL. From weaving and knitting to natural dyeing and felting, these workshops will offer smaller groups the opportunity to learn various skills in crafting and creating with wool and natural fibre.
The festival’s first-ever Karoo Lifestyle Tent & Tea Garden will also lure young and old to discover more about various lifestyle topics from different speakers. Learn to prepare different cuts of lamb or mutton, explore the wonders of slow food and slow living, and find out how you can style your wool items with everyday wear.

THE ULTIMATE NIGHT OUT IN
THE KAROO
Of course, a festival isn’t a festival without live entertainment. There will be a Beer and Entertainment Tent where you’ll be able to enjoy live performances over the course of the two days. Celebrating 100 years of Afrikaans, the Kampvuur Kuier on the Friday night is bound to be something truly unique and special. Here, festivalgoers can sit around the fire, singing along with talented artists. On the Saturday, the South African rock band, Millennium, will be the main attraction at the annual WolJol
The Klein Karoo is known for its hospitality and incredibly unique fauna and flora, with a plethora of things to explore, and the Karoo Winter Wool Festival is one of the best ways to do exactly that. H

EXPLORE STELLENBOSCH ON FOOT
Have you ever noticed how your experience of a place gets elevated by exploring on foot? A walking tour allows you to take in a town's sights and smells in a whole new way and is sure to etch itself into memory.
A recent stay at the Southern Sun De Wagen afforded us the time to truly immerse ourselves in what the town has to offer. We wanted to approach our visit from another angle than usual - not the obvious route of culinary indulgence and wine tastings. Instead, we wanted to learn more about the town's history, and we were told that exploring the town through Stellenbosch on Foot would be the best way to do it. So, we set off along Dorp Street toward the Moederkerk, curious about what interesting facts we were about to discover about the City of Oaks.
Images: Renate Engelbrecht
THE MOEDERKERK
One of Stellenbosch's most prominent attractions is the Moederkerk (Mother Church). While it is an impressive heritage building, we found its history even more interesting. The church's original location was actually on the grounds where you will find the De Oude Werf Hotel today. But, during one of the town's three devastating fires, the church burnt down, leading to its members meeting for church at the Welgevallen wine cellar for the following twelve years. The church building that catches the eye of anyone visiting Stellenbosch today, was therefore only built where it stands now, later.
SOUTH AFRICA'S OLDEST RUNNING HOTEL
Speaking of De Oude Werf, this hotel has a rich heritage itself and has many, many stories to tell. With it being located on the original church's piece of land, one can walk down a couple of steps just past reception and view a section of the burnt-down church's foundations. Some of the graves in
The hotel's restaurant is built around an old oak - the type of tree Stellenbosch’s nickname, City of Oaks, comes from. Many of the oaks in town were planted by Stellenbosch’ founder, Simon van der Stel, and his son, Willem Adriaan van der Stel and there is a lot of history and traditions attached to these trees. One such tradition is that you can only become a true Matie (the name of students studying at the University of Stellenbosch, also known as Maties) if an acorn has fallen on your head.
DORP STREET
You can easily spend a full day in Dorp Street - a Stellenbosch street that has been declared a national monument since it's the street with the longest row of heritage buildings still intact. From houses and business buildings with the most unique gables - each with its own story attached to whomever lived there - to the oldest pub in town, De Akker. Of course, there are numerous restaurants and tipple spots to explore, so we suggest that you linger a little longer after you've come back from your walking tour and spend some time indulging in the delightful atmosphere of a town steeped in history. Short for Eat, Live & Nourish, EL&N is a café and lifestyle brand that has become the ultimate dining spot associated with photogenic backdrops and stylish dishes. The brand’s founder, Alexandra Miller’s background in fashion is evident in literally
every EL&N space, offering her fellow fashionistas around the globe an accessible fashion-led food and drink destination, whether it’s in Paris or, wait for it, Pretoria!
Yes, right on cue with the change of season, the pink doors of the world-famous café
were thrown open at the City of Jacarandas’ Menlyn Maine Central Square. As one of the world’s most Instagrammable cafés, EL&N London Menlyn Maine’s beautiful blooms brought about a renewed sense of spring, even amidst the cooler climate and twirling autumn leaves. In an instant, the threat of winter was shut out and between the walls of the flagship Pretoria store, we got to call spring back again.
Together with its whimsical interiors, EL&N London Menlyn Maine also brings a hint of its heritage: some British charm. Probably at the top of the list when it comes to Pretoria’s current most beautiful eateries, the café offers the perfect spot for foodies and photographers alike. It features numerous cute and cosy corners with noteworthy neon-lit quotes and sayings. Beautifully branded bar stools elevate the bar area and greenery and florals lure those with an eye for detail inside. From floor to ceiling, the space has been designed with trendy aesthetics and fashion-forward diners in mind, complementing beautifully plated menu items and decadently displayed cakes on offer.
With experiential dining being a growing trend in South Africa and with EL&N London being a favourite among global celebrities and social media moguls, it’s an exciting addition to Pretoria’s dining scene. Naturally, they also tap into culinary trends. Think Lotus Banana, Chicken & Waffles and Nutella French Toast for brunch. Or, try their Truffle Mac & Cheese Gnocchi or Wagyu Rigatoni Bolognese for lunch. Honestly, at R550, even their Tomahawk Steak’s plating has to justify the extra penny!
When it comes to the drinks menu, their new matcha menu is a must. The classic Matcha Latte, Matcha Rose Iced Latte and Mango Matcha Iced Latte are simply poured prettiness and their Pistachio Spanish Latte will see you linger for longer than planned. Of course - positioned perfectly on pink saucers - their go-to Cortados and Cappuccinos are just as good. Also, don’t miss out on their colourful mocktails! Try a Pomegranate Mojito, the most decadent Piña Colada, their Ombré Passion Fruit Cooler, or - for the love of chocolate - a Nutella Martini!
Pretty as a picture and whimsically welcoming, EL&N London Menlyn Maine is where you want to take your favourite foodie photo.H

LUCKY BREAD COMPANY
With its founder hailing from the City of Jacarandas herself, it comes as no surprise that Lucky Bread Company has become synonymous with Pretoria. The brand has grown into a firm favourite among locations in its portfolio - its latest having recently been launched at the Castle Gate Lifestyle Centre. Based in the one corner of the lifestyle centre, the space offers ample indoor and outdoor seating with greenery hiding the parking lot from view. Its high ceilings, large windows and natural hues make for a refreshing, yet homy atmosphere and from the menu, you can pick and choose between all sorts of delicious options. Following a hike at the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve, we tried out this specific location for brunch and it was simply divine. From delightful granola bowls with papaya or berries, to an impressive, generously portioned Mediterranean Egg Bowl and a Bacon & Brie Lucky Fresh Sandwich (of which we could get a gluten-free version), we thought we'd tried it all. But, as we were indulging in our post-hike brunch, waiters came past with plates filled with even more impressive meals, making us want to return for lunch and dinner too. Lucky Bread Company is most certainly a foodie destination worth writing home about.

Or, find a table inside and indulge in all things yummy while enjoying the setting and its beautiful interiors.

Stay in the loop of when the official launch of The Book Bar will be by opting in on their mailing list or by following them on social media. HONEY BADGER DECO
Established in 2017, Honey Badger Deco has become a go-to in Pretoria for those shopping for lighting and décor products. When the founders could not find what they were looking for, for their own décor project, they decided to make their own. In the end, through word of mouth, their initial idea grew into a full-blown business. They've since produced lights for restaurants, local and international homeowners and boutique stores. Their products are eco-friendly and inspired by nature and they continue to be mindful about their impact on the environment. 1

JASMYN
It might be a bit of a drive, but it's doable in less than a day and definitely worth it. Jasmyn is a destination close to our hearts as it is the perfect outing for Pretorians wanting to escape the city for a couple of hours. Located just past the North West Province's border in Hartbeespoort, it's a farm shop that supports the farmer, featuring a range of high-quality farm products sourced directly from surrounding local farms - from fresh fruit and veggies to dairy products, raw honey and more. The family-owned farmstall is committed to fostering a sustainable lifestyle and visiting the store and its surrounding eateries and flea market will encourage you to do the same.
If you're looking for some fun things to do with the kids over the school break, Picture This Studios at The Big Red Barn is definitely a must. With an affordable per-hour fee, you can get creative and have fun without having to rob the bank. It's the perfect way to keep young and old entertained. P.S. On 18 June 2025, they will be hosting a wine tasting with Bartho Eksteen Wines. At R300 per person, tickets include curated tastings and light refreshments.
1
Located at CBC Old Boys in Groenkloof, this night market is the ultimate gettogether spot whether it's a warm summer's or a cold wintery night. Grab your coat every second Friday of the month and join fellow Pretorians in the celebration of all things street food, live music, artisan stalls and family fun.

THE SALT SLAB BBQ
TEXAS IN THE MIDLANDS
#HelloDurban by Kristi Sander Images: Supplied
Nestled in the scenic heart of KwaZulu-Natal's Midlands, The Salt Slab BBQ brings authentic Texas-style barbeque to South Africa. Located at 42 Currys Post Road, Howick, this gem offers a completely unique dining experience, combining traditional American BBQ techniques with local hospitality. Think tender, slow cooked, smoky barbeque meats and flavours that will transport your tastebuds to the heart of Texas. From tender brisket and fall-off-the-bone ribs to juicy sausages and smoky sides, they’re serving up the authentic Texas BBQ you’ve been craving.
The Salt Slab was founded by Mike Ross, whose 18 years in the United States sparked a deep appreciation for Texas’ rich barbeque tradition. Inspired by his time abroad, Mike set out to bring the authentic experience of slow-smoked meats to South Africa, creating a welcoming space for friends and families to come together and enjoy flavourful, comforting meals.
The menu showcases an irresistible range of smoked specialties, each crafted with care and bold flavour. From melt-in-your-mouth brisket, slow-cooked to tender perfection, to richly seasoned pork and wagyu beef ribs that are smoked for hours, every dish promises a true taste of Texas. The pulled pork, infused with a signature rub, is so tender it practically falls apart, while the pulled lamb and pork belly offer their own distinct, savoury tastes. House-made sausages, available in both classic and jalapeño cheese varieties, deliver a satisfying burst of smoky, spicy flavour in every bite.
To round off the experience, you can choose from a variety of comforting sides, including creamy mac and cheese, tangy coleslaw, cowboy style baked beans, cheesy potatoes, potato salad,
pap and relish, and sweet cream corn. In addition to their signature smoked meats, they also serve up a mouthwatering selection of sandwiches and burgers.
For those with a sweet tooth, dessert is a must. Their banana pudding is a crowd favourite, while the rich chocolate cake and zesty Key lime pie provide a perfect ending to a hearty meal.
The Salt Slab offers a laid-back, welcoming environment where friendly, attentive staff make you feel right at home. The setting blends rustic charm with comfort, featuring both indoor and outdoor seating. It's an ideal spot for families, with a play area and jungle gym that keep the kids entertained while adults relax and enjoy their meal. Adding to the Texan-inspired experience is a fully licensed saloon, serving everything from refreshing mojitos to carefully selected wines and rotating beer specials.
The Salt Slab operates on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30. We recommend arriving early as favourites often sell out even before lunchtime. H

BOUND BOTSWANA
TESTING THE POWER & PLAY OF THE ISUZU D-MAX
Sunrise had just cracked the horizon when we piled into the ISUZU D-Max, packed to the brim, and started the five-hour drive towards the South Africa/Botswana border. Cruising along the N4, we blazoned past other cars, feeling as if we were on top of the world in our highride suspension double cab. As we sang along to road trip tunes and the trees whooshed by, it dawned on us that travel couldn't be any sweeter, thanks to ISUZU’s fuel efficient adventure machine.
#HelloLifestyle by Victoria Hill Images: Victoria Hill/Ricardo Lopes
BREAKING THE BORDER
Designed for power, performance and dependability, we felt right at home in the ISUZU D-MAX as the roads stretched out before us and we crossed over the border into Botswana. Driving down Tlokweng Road, we encountered the first opportunity to test the D-MAX’s brakes. Fast and sharp, we managed to stop effectively for a herd of cattle slowly moving across our path - a perfectly common occurrence, we soon discovered. Thanks to the ISUZU D-MAX's amazing brake system that features rapid brakeforce distribution and traction control, we felt assured navigating the diverse road conditions, whether paved or dirt.
Accelerating to 120km/h in no time at all, the Indaba Lodge in Botswana's capital, Gaborone, entered our sights. Indaba's City Lodge provided a day-end oasis and is, amazingly, situated right next to an ISUZU dealership. How’s that for perfect timing and placement? After a long day's drive, the overnight stay in our spacious and upmarket suite was wonderfully refreshing and we loaded up our ISUZU D-MAX again the next morning to set off towards Nata Lodge on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.
NAVIGATING TO NATA
Botswana's roads are known to be relatively well maintained, however, the one-lane-only road for the entire 600km stretch to Nata certainly afforded us the opportunity to test the D-MAX's limits, as well as its impressive fuel consumption. As a popular carrier route for imports and exports, the stretch of road carried huge cargo trucks, causing delays and traffic pileups. Evidently, the D-MAX was forced to weave between and overtake slow-moving trucks, free roaming goats and an array of stray sheep. Remarkably, we barely felt a thing! Dodging a divot in the road, navigating gravel under our wheels and accelerating back up to the speed limit were all seamlessly easy. Cruise control was also a lifesaver, allowing the D-MAX to take the wheel itself for a fair portion of the drive.
KEEPING YOU ON THE BEATEN TRACK
Apart from the fact that we could have done a big chunk of the trip on one tank (the D-MAX is renowned for its ability to travel 2004km on a single tank), another trip highlight was undoubtedly the vehicle's fully integrated infotainment system that kept the bass and beats burning. Its solid eight speaker sound system creates appreciable acoustics, with a sleek 9-inch touchscreen to operate it all from. Wireless Apple CarPlay also ensured that we were never led astray, with Waze’s offline maps constantly keeping us on the right track.
FORCES OF NATURE
Admiring our surrounds and the utter beauty of Africa en route, we noticed a military vehicle and veterinary ambulances that had parked next to an elephant lying on the road. Just then, another elephant stepped into view, ambling across the main road and forcing us - again - to test (or trust?) the brakes’ anti-lock as we jolted into an instant halt. Fiercely protective of its injured friend, the male started to trumpet and flap its ears, noticeably enraged. Suddenly, it began charging towards us. Flooring the D-MAX, the engine revved to help us make a swift and speedy exit. In an otherwise calm and quiet environment, the thrill of this lucky escape had us dumbstruck as we viewed the scene from the rearview mirror - clouds of dust twirling behind us.
POWER BEFORE PLAY
The dirt roads to Nata Lodge allowed the 4x4 force of the ISUZU D-MAX to prove itself. Turning the dial to 4H, the steering and suspension of the vehicle immediately stiffened, allowing for a smooth ride all the way to the lodge's reception.
Reflecting the raw, natural beauty of Botswana, the bungalows at Nata Lodge are made entirely from wood and other natural materials. Cosy and intimate, our room overlooked a flowing river, providing both personal solitude and a deepened connection with the wild. That evening, the African skies had us constantly staring up into space. Stars in their thousands lit up the sky. We spotted Orion’s Belt, the Southern Cross and breathed in the Milky Way. With no trace of air or light pollution shielding the stars from sight, this rarity felt like a true African blessing.
CRUISING TO CHOBE
The next stop was Chobe Safari Lodge, set on the elephant-dotted banks of the Chobe River. Here, plenty activities awaited. Our beautiful safari room - with stunning river views - provided the perfect sundowner spot, right there on the balcony.
That afternoon, we were treated to the lodge’s famous sunset boat cruise. We spotted elephants grazing on sweet green grass mid-river - just an arm’s length away - as well as hippos, crocodiles and water buffalo basking in the sun along the riverbanks.
Back at the lodge, the restaurant offers adventurous meats like crocodile tail for
those who dare to sample something out of the ordinary. If that isn’t quite your preference, the Beef Tomahawk is a sure win!
The following day, Victoria Falls awaited just a border away in Zimbabwe. This natural wonder (which locals call ‘Mosi oa Tunya’ or ‘The Smoke that Thunders’) and the immenseness of it all had us in awe. Later, we relaxed on a game drive while taking in the majestic open plains of the park, spotting - among other reserve delights - a lioness protecting her cubs.
SPONTANEOUS ADVENTURES
Wanting the chance to see a giant Baobab Tree in all its glory, we took the ISUZU D-MAX through the open reserve for its very own photo opportunity. With mudstreaked side panels and an insect-splattered bonnet, it fit the frame perfectly, posing underneath the first Baobab we could find. Throughout the entire journey, the vehicle’s wheels never sank into the mud, nor did our luggage shuffle an inch. And, even with the rocky terrain, our coffee cups didn’t spill once.
BACK TO REALITY
Despite being a trail master, the ISUZU D-MAX proved itself worthy of tar roads too. We manoeuvred our way back - from the wide, open roads of Botswana to the wild streets of Joburg - naturally comparing the city's worst potholes with pacing, ear-flapping elephants.
What’s more, in all the 3000kms blazed, we averaged just one litre per 10kms, proving the D-MAX’s stellar reputation for fuel efficiency. Similar to D-MAX’s fun 1 Tank Challenges, it was a performance feat in fuel economy.
After all is said and done, the jury might still be out on whether it's the roaring lion or ISUZU's fuel efficient D-MAX Diesel Double Cab that wears the crown as king of the savanna. H

WILD AND WONDERFUL BUSHVELD ESCAPES
#HelloLifestyle
Wood Images: Supplied
Winter is the best time for wildlife sightings and South Africa's plethora of luxurious parks and lodges offer amazing opportunities for close encounters with the Big Five.
During the winter months, reduced vegetation and drier conditions make it easier to spot animals in the wild and, generally, the cooler temperatures make visits to game and nature reserves more enjoyable than in the harsh summer heat. If you’re looking for a mid-year bush escape, head to one of these top lodges for an Africa-infused getaway.
WESTERN CAPE, TANKWA KAROO – INVERDOORN
In the heart of the Tankwa Karoo - with its signature golden fynbos - you’ll find Inverdoorn, a luxurious farm-style game lodge. A committed wildlife conservatory, Inverdoorn is home to the Cape’s leading cheetah project (among other award-winning, long-term conservation endeavours). Their field guides offer world-class expertise and regular game drives showcase the Big Five that they’ve reintroduced to the Western Cape.
Sweeping vistas of untouched wilderness await, with native wildlife and vegetation specific only to this region. You can experience an afternoon cheetah run or head out into the night to explore the Milky Way and gaze in wonder at the glorious Southern skies.
With a variety of accommodation options - from chalets to suites and family lodges - guests can expect privacy, luxury and comfort. Various pools and uninterrupted views make for day-long relaxation, while in-room spa treatments come highly recommended for added indulgence. You can also take a guided horse trail or cycle out into the reserve.
A stay at Inverdoorn is met with unparalleled service and dining, peace, quiet and soulful rejuvenation, making you remember just how it feels to be alive.
WESTERN CAPE, SOUTHERN KAROO – AQUILA
Just under two hours from Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve offers an unforgettable safari experience ideal for day trips and overnight stays. Set against breathtaking backdrops of the Southern Karoo, Aquila is a 10 000-hectare conservancy, home to the Big Five and an abundance of wildlife.
As a leader in eco-tourism and conservation, Aquila’s staff are passionately involved in active rehabilitation projects and work to combat the illegal wildlife trade. Solar power, water recycling, alien vegetation clearing and community upliftment projects form part of their impressive sustainability strategy.
Their accommodation options range from contemporary lodge rooms to rustic bush-style cottages, with the on-site spa and infinity pool adding to the experience. The buffet-style dining is hearty and locally inspired, often accompanied by views of roaming wildlife.
Aquila is perfect for families, offering game drives suited to all ages, a dedicated kids’ area with engaging activities and a Junior Ranger programme for budding young explorers, giving parents the chance to relax and recharge.
Aquila is a blend of adventure, education and relaxation - a safari escape as meaningful as it is memorable.
Experience the untamed beauty of the African wilderness without compromising on comfort, privacy or elegance. Perched on the edge of a dramatic gorge in the Welgevonden Game Reserve, this secluded retreat offers uninterrupted views, discreet five-star service and an atmosphere of refined tranquillity.
With just eight private suites, each featuring a plunge pool, expansive deck and panoramic vistas, Clifftop is designed for those who value intimacy and impeccable attention to detail. Their cuisine is locally inspired and thoughtfully curated, served in a setting where time seems to slow down and space feels endless. Guided game drives offer close encounters with Africa’s most iconic wildlife, while the lodge itself remains an oasis of calm, far removed from the ordinary. This is not just a getaway - it’s an elevated encounter with Africa at its most majestic.

EXCELLENCE IN OVERDRIVE
THE NEW, ALL-ELECTRIC VOLVO EX90
#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
When it comes to elegance, sophistication and a drive for excellence, there is one motoring brand that will always come to mind. The recent launch of the seven-seat Volvo EX90 - which also recently claimed the World Luxury Car title - has proven Volvo's steadfast dedication to these qualities yet again.
The all-electrical vehicle was launched just outside of Cape Town at the beautiful Cooperage Venue in March. After being chauffeured from the Southern Sun Cullinan Hotel to the venue in an impressive convoy of Volvos, we were welcomed with bubbly-filled flutes and canapes. Dressed to the nines, socialites, influencers, celebrities and Volvo ambassadors arrived at the candlelit venue, with Olympic swimmer, Tatjana Smith Schoenmaker, cricketer, Dewald Brevis and many more among them. Mingling on the outstretched lawns with a cool Cape breeze serving as a reminder of the changing season, we enjoyed delicious treats and casual chats, with conversations constantly circling back to the venue and the vehicle of the hour.
The Volvo EX90 serves as a proverbial restart for the Volvo brand, bringing the essence of electric vehicles to the forefront. Amongst its peers, this car is one of the most aesthetic options on the road. Beyond its beauty, its specs also impress. It was designed to be the safest vehicle Volvo has ever built and features a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance features. Further to this, it also introduces the brand's invisible safety shield, thanks to its integration of cutting-edge sensing technology. The vehicle is the epitome of Scandinavian comfort, enveloping passengers in luxury with impressive tech, advanced safety features and premium materials. And, it delivers a healthy 380kW of power and 910N.m of torque, which means it can silently sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Its 111kWh battery pack ensures up to 751km in urban driving and 604km on the combined cycle. Curious about charging? When plugged into a 250kW DC fast charger, the Volvo EX90 can be recharged within 30 minutes (10-80%).
Following a brief introduction highlighting the Volvo EX90 and marking the brand's restart, we were ushered inside. There, in a candlelit venue, the sound of Vivaldi's The Four Season’s filled the air, with a specially curated candlelight concert setting the scene. The string quartet complemented the essence of the evening perfectly, with a special performance by Msaki elevating the experience even further. With some local flair - complete with a performance of the national anthem and guests singing along to Tayla's Water - the evening affirmed Volvo's presence in South Africa and its commitment to our rainbow nation. NEW MINI JCW COUNTRYMAN MORE MISCHIEF, MORE MAGIC
There it stood in all its glory: a magnificent, sleeklooking, luxurious red beast. Seeing the new MINI John Cooper Works (JCW) Countryman was love at first sight. As we opened the door, the MINI logo lit up the road below and a circular screen swirled to life whilst the backlights started their Union Jack animation. Setting the car into drive, we catapulted out of the parking lot, music blasting out of the Harman Kardon speakers. Suddenly, we felt alive.
EXTERIOR EXUDES ENERGY: AROUND THE DOORS
The 2025 MINI JCW Countryman showcases a blend of performance-oriented design and distinctive styling cues, setting it apart from its peers. Its exterior is eye-catching, epitomising luxury and elegance - a real head turner wherever
we went. Additionally, the aerodynamics were otherworldly, with a compact silhouette and wide stance. Whether nipping around corners or dodging potholes, we barely felt a thing.
INTERIOR INTEGRITY: OVER THE MOUNTAINS
Like us, the MINI JCW Countryman yearns for the open road. Considered a great urban vehicle, we found that it’s even better for road trips and adventures. It is in these settings that the magic of MINI comes alive, giving it the slogan of 'wild and free.'
In its sporty seats we were in for a gripping ride. The three-spoke JCW sports steering wheel is newly designed to include a silky-smooth decorative fabric strap. Furthermore, the HeadsUp display impressively rises from the dashboard, offering a sleek view.
TECHNOLOGICAL TESTAMENTS: UNDER THE STARS
While driving the JCW Countryman, we barely had to lift a finger (or a foot). In fact, its assisted steering and cruise control literally takes the wheel and allows you to sip on your takeaway coffee without concern. Simply press ‘Start Reverse Parking’ and your JCW Countryman will do the rest.
it also has some power and performance to it. With red interior lights, a heightened sound symposer, a stiffer steering wheel and enhanced suspension, it proves its prowess through and through.
MECHANICAL MAGIC: AGAINST THE CURRENT
The Experience Mode is a game-changer. Drivers can choose between Core Mode, Green, Vivid, Personal, Balance, Timeless, Trail and Go-Kart, with each experience mode featuring its own signature lighting, soundscape and design.
And, whilst the JCW Countryman is considered the epitome in luxurious driving,
It might be comfortable, safe and secure in the city, but MINI's JWC Countryman shows its true colours on the open road or along rocky terrains and long windy paths. Its name might suggest otherwise, but it is big enough to fit the whole family. A memorymaking machine, for sure! H

PROPERTY TRENDS 2025 PICKING
The residential property market is a key component to the economic health of a country, painting a picture of the financial and demographic trends driving the economy. We spoke to Yael Geffen, CEO of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s, for her insights…
HL: Is brick and mortar a fail-safe investment in the present economic market?
YG: You head to port in a storm, right? There’s a reason for that - ports are the very embodiment of brick and mortar. There’s enduring appeal in homeownership and that goes double for a country like ours where so many people have never been able to get into the market. That’s, however, been changing in a big way and, as a single mother, I’m immensely proud of the fact that women make up the bulk of first-time home buyers in South Africa.
HL: Are there any significant changes to the market since the decrease in inflation rates this year? Has the lower interest rate led to increased sales and demand?
YG: By decreasing interest rates, you mean a sucker punch, right? There’s no other phrase for giving with one hand and taking with the other, as we’ve seen with interest rates going down a tiny bit, but knowing a shoe is going to drop. And, as a
rule, it’s a big shoe, like a tariff increase of nearly 13% from Eskom.
FNB’s most recent Property Barometer indicates that the first quarter of 2025 saw a notable rise in optimism among real estate professionals in general, with activity levels hitting their highest point in three years. Despite this improved sentiment, actual market performance remains subdued. We need interest rates to drop more before they’ll directly influence the market again.
HL:
What are the buying trends in terms of bigger VS smaller homes?
YG:
Much of the market is looking at downsizing, which is extremely sensible given the national economic outlook. Own what you can afford, rather than stretching your budget beyond reasonable limits.
HL:
What are the buying trends in terms of sectional title VS free standing properties?
YG:
Sectional title is the clear sentiment winner right now, from a security and lifestyle point of view.
YAEL GEFFEN'S BRAIN
HL:
What are the buying trends in terms of alternate power solutions?
YG:
People want homes that save on consumption of all municipal services. It’s a no-brainer in the current economy.
#HelloLifestyle by Angela Wood Images:Supplied
With a large part of the SA market not being able to access financing, has there been a significant increase in rentals?
The market is largely moving towards buying, because consumers want to build their own economic stability. Data from Payprop at the end of last year showed that rental growth has remained in the 4.5% to 5% range, with many tenants going smaller to save for deposits on properties. The larger the deposit buyers have in hand, the more favourably lending institutions will view bond applications at the end of the day.
What does the peroperty market currently reveal about migration trends? Is it true that everyone is moving to the coast? Where are the current buying hotspots or, is a reverse migration (which is also spoken of) already taking place?
Yes, the coast is still massively popular, but the latest buzz phrase is ‘reverse migration,’ which is exactly what it says on the tin - people moving back inland. It is true that the Western Cape is still top of the semigration ratings, but prices in the Cape Town metropolitan area have shot up to a level that puts buying out of reach for much of the local market.
Have housing prices recovered fully since COVID-19 and the global financial crises?
No. Indices show we’re currently trailing by about 16%. This road to recovery is a marathon, not a sprint.
What are the present challenges in the commercial office, industrial and retail market?
The office sector continues to face challenges, with vacancy rates exceeding 20% in major cities. The shift to hybrid work models has reduced corporate demand, leading to an oversupply. To combat declining demand, many older office buildings are being repurposed into residential apartments, co-living spaces or student accommodations.
The industrial sector is currently the best-performing segment of South Africa’s commercial property market. Demand for warehousing, logistics parks and light industrial spaces remains strong, driven by the rapid growth of e-commerce.
South Africa’s retail market reveals neighbourhood and convenience centres
performing better than large regional malls. Smaller retail centres - anchored by grocers, pharmacies and essential services - are proving more resilient.
In which property segment does Lew Geffen Sotheby’s see its greatest growth or potential for 2025?
The super luxury property band is important to us, because it’s a market we have always successfully serviced. This segment is far more resilient to economic movement. We’re also seeing a lot of movement in the R4m to R10m price band. It’s where most of the market is playing now.
What are your tips and/or advice for those considering buying and selling properties presently?
For buyers, focus on properties in high-demand areas. With interest rates still elevated, securing pre-approval will strengthen your negotiating position. Be prepared to negotiate aggressively, especially on properties that have been listed for extended periods, as some sellers may accept lower offers to secure a sale.
For sellers, realistic pricing is crucial in today’s market. Highlight your property’s unique selling points and work with an experienced agent.
For investors, industrial and logistics properties remain the strongest performers, driven by e-commerce and supply chain demand.
What is Lew Geffen Sotheby’s unique brand proposition with so many real estate agencies operating in the current market?
The word ‘iconic’ is somewhat overused nowadays. If you want the purest definition of the word, it’s the name Sotheby’s. It was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 1988, becoming the oldest publicly traded company on the NYSE. In South Africa, we hold the highest average national unit sales price (over 30%) and have done so for 24 years. The brand is aspirational to all audiences, especially since we have sold the most international celebrities’ homes. Correction - sold homes to them, then resold them when they’ve wanted to upgrade or relocate. H
EAGLE MOTOR CITY
It's more than a dealership; it’s a driving partner for life.
For decades, buying a car in South Africa has been a one-anddone affair - choose your model, sign the

Formerly known as Eagle Corner, this trusted automotive brand has evolved into a 360-degree motor hub tailored for real people living real lives. What truly sets Eagle Motor City apart, though, is the relationship. CEO, John Landey says: “Your first car changes your life. Helping someone unlock that freedom - that’s what excites us.” With a low staff
turnover and a genuine commitment to personal service, Eagle Motor City's customers often deal with the same friendly face from test drive to trade-in.
In an increasingly digital world, Eagle Motor City embraces innovation - think AI-powered service updates and integrated aftercare - without losing sight of what really matters: people. “We’re not replacing relationships with technology. We’re using it to make our service more human, not less,” says Landey.
Eagle is focused on what South African motorists truly need: reliable options, honest guidance and real value. The addition of Suzuki to its lineup brings affordability to the forefront, proving that you don’t need to compromise to get on the road.
In a world of quick sales and fleeting service, Eagle Motor City is building something more meaningful: a longterm motoring partner you can count on. Because, they’re not just in the car business; they’re in the people business. H
