Hello Lifestyle Magazine Spring 2025

Publisher’s NOTE

There’s something undeniably special about spring in South Africa. Maybe it’s the way the air shifts ever so slightly, carrying the scent of jasmine and fresh-cut grass, or how the sunsets seem to linger just a little longer, soaking the skyline in gold. For me, it’s always been a season of energy and optimism - a chance to shake off the cold, lace up my running shoes and get outside with my kids for spontaneous weekend adventures.

Whether we’re road-tripping through the bushveld, discovering coastal hiking trails, or diving beneath the surface of our country’s spectacular reefs (yes, I’m a passionate scuba diver too), this time of year reignites my love for the outdoors and reminds me how much beauty is packed into every corner of Mzansi.

That same sense of adventure pulses through the pages of our Spring Issue. Our cover star, Brent Lindeque - aka The Good Things Guy - reminds us of the power of storytelling, kindness and choosing hope over fear. His story is a must-read and a powerful reminder that one person can truly make a difference.

We’ve also pulled together a dynamic selection of what to do, see, eat and experience in our City Guides for Joburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria. You’ll find the best local spots to brunch, buy and boogie - plus a full calendar of events to make the most of the season.

For foodies and cocktail lovers, our Springtime Cocktail feature is a flavour-filled journey through some of SA’s best-loved brands, complete with easy recipes to shake up at home while watching the sun go down. And, if you’re dreaming of a getaway, our Indian Oceans Island feature offers the perfect excuse to recharge somewhere magical and serene.

From wellness trends and grooming to South African fashion, live music and luxe restaurants - we’ve curated this issue to inspire, uplift and fuel your spring spirit.

So, go on and pour something delicious, find a quiet spot in the garden and enjoy this issue as much as we’ve loved creating it.

To sunny skies and new adventures,

Justyn

Brent LINDEQUE

Changing South Africa, One Story at a Time

In a world consumed by doomscrolling, wars, protests, political outrage and crisis fatigue, Brent Lindeque is the bright, unwavering light cutting through the noise. His de-light-ful approach emanates not only from his gorgeous smile and infectious laughter that, from the get-go, beamed through the behindthe-scenes set. No, it also comes from his deep understanding of the inherent goodness of human nature. That’s what affectionately made him known across South Africa (and the world) as The Good Things Guy, and it couldn’t be more apt, or authentic.

BREAKING THE MOULD

From the individual team hugs received on arrival to his signed second-edition book, Only Good Things, which we were gifted with on departure, we were left hopeful, inspired and, admittedly, a little infatuated. We all felt as if we were better people, simply for having met Brent. He’s got that ineffable X-factor that makes a video go viral or gets an idea to pass what Malcom Gladwell calls the “tipping point.” In fact, that’s what gives this endlessly energetic, fast-talking, quick-thinking, 40-yearold the ability to capture the hearts and minds of South Africans and break the mould of news stereotypes across the world. In the last 10 years, Brent has built an entire media platform - a veritable movement of tens of millions of followers - on one simple belief: good news matters.

It all began with a single act of kindness. In 2014, when the world was going crazy over

the ‘NekNomination’ drinking challenge, Brent - compelled to do something more meaningful with social media - filmed himself handing a sandwich and a cold drink to a stranger, instead of taking part in the reckless online challenge. It was his first YouTube video that he ever posted and it instantly went viral, racking up millions of views and, more importantly, sparking a wave of random acts of kindness and paying it forward across the country. He was featured on CNN, BBC and Sky News to name a few and, looking back, Brent says: “It all started and ended there - I began living my life in purpose and on purpose.”

BUILDING THE GOOD NAME BRAND

Brent didn’t stop there. Having seen the potential of this positivity, he began getting involved with charities and NGOs, through which he instantly noticed that South Africa was filled with an inordinate number of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. “It was the first time in my life I felt that South Africa wasn’t falling over, and I wanted other South Africans to feel the same.”

As a self-confessed marketing dropout in varsity, he quips that he had some skills that helped him launch “this little media platform.” Some of his previous jobs include being a carni (carnival set-up DIY guy) in America, a Formula 3 corporate roadie and an event and brand activation marketing specialist to a company that he helped build and which is still thriving. His honorary doctorate will come later, we laughed.

Today, the goodthingsguy.com publishes over 100 articles a week and gets 3.5 million plus monthly visits. His podcast gets half a million streams per episode; his social media platforms run off the charts with thousands of daily likes, shares and forwards; and his videos reach 30 million South Africans each month. “It’s crazy,” he says. “I’m so incredibly blessed.”

A SPACE WHERE HOPE THRIVES

But, it’s not about the clicks, Brent explains. “The Good Things Guy was created to give South Africans a more balanced view of the world; to inspire its citizens and make them proudly South African.” While negative news makes top headlines, his team aspires to share stories of hope and human kindness. “South Africa is a phenomenal place. We are one of the best countries in the world because of our people. Despite the robots not working, the potholes, the crime and government corruption, the people are what make South Africa work. And then there are all the extras like our beautiful land and nature,” he passionately imparts.

At the time when it started, Brent didn’t realise that what they were doing was called constructive journalism. There’s telling the bad news if there is that, but then there is also waiting an hour or two to find that there’s a helper, or a person who turns the whole story around. The best thing, he says, is how to get involved and make a difference.

“If one person reads a story and they see the world differently, then our job is done.

#HelloLifestyle by Angela Wood Images: Hannerie De Wet Hair & Makeup: Adelle Jung Venue: Beechwood Gardens, Hyde Park

Nelson Mandela’s famous quote, where he says that he hopes we live our lives where all our choices are reflected in our hopes and not our fears, really resonates with me. We make very different decisions when we are in our fearful brains. When we are hopeful, we have different answers and solutions.”

POURING FROM A FULL CUP

Whether he’s spotlighting a rural schoolgirl’s science fair victory or a Joburg café feeding the homeless, Brent tells stories with warmth, respect and genuine pride. Does he ever have a bad day or feel hopeless sometimes? Jokingly, he says that he must have a chemical imbalance, because out of 365 days, he has at least 340 good days. “I’m very thankful for that,” he smiles, adding that when he does have bad days, he knows how to fill his cup. “I play Playstation and play with my dogs and sometimes I go ‘day drinking’ and I see my family and friends and maybe sleep on the couch, or watch series, or read. You must learn to hold that ‘badness’ with kindness.”

In a week where no two days are the same, comprising radio features, keynote addresses - at least two to five a week around the country - and all the business management in between, Brent says waking up before sunrise to plan his diary and write his personal social media posts that express his creativity and inspire him to dig deeper, really helps. He also incorporates fitness into his daily life - even an unstrenuous walk with the dogs. Daily movement, he says, is a staple that keeps him grounded.

Having a deep love for travel and having visited over 34 countries, Brent recalls his first overseas trip at 18. Standing in Times Square, New York, he thought of how much more of the world there was than just Alberton (where he grew up) and there and then he took a vow to see as much of the world as he could. “I’m lucky to see the world through work - and hard work. Travel gives you great perspective of where you come from and where you are going.”

GREEN FLAGS MEAN GO

With the privilege of sitting in rooms alongside very important people in this country, he promises that there are good people doing good things in every facet of our country. It’s the bad headlines, he says, that don’t allow the light to shine through. “When you engage with the bad stuff, your news feed algorithm is sending you what it thinks you want to see.”

Reiterating that the best part of his job is meeting the people who are doing the coolest things, Brent says: “They are not doing it for

a pat on the back or looking to be featured in a magazine. They are doing it because it’s what they do and who they are.”

Believing that there is a Godliness in doing good, he admits to having a sometimes “tumultuous,” but “wonderful” relationship with God. “There are some people who believed that I don’t belong in a church because I am gay and for them it is quite difficult, but I still am a Christian and a

spiritual guy. When I kissed my fiancé during a cooking reality show, the outpouring from straight men was fantastic. South Africa - in so many ways - has come a long, long way.”

In an age where negativity often makes the loudest noise, Brent Lindeque is proof that optimism isn’t naïve - it’s radical. “Kindness can save a person’s life, and I have seen it.”

ENTERTAINMENT

HOBBIES, BOOKS, PODCASTS, SONGS AND FILMS TO KEEP YOU ENTERTAINED

Add a spring in your step with feel-good

habits and hobbies

Every season brings a sense of newness with it, making it the perfect time to also look inwards and reflect. It may feel as though the year is nearly over, but spring is a good time to take stock and reset. These small acts can help you control what you can if you feel that the year has run off ahead of you:

HOBBIES & HABITS TURN UP THE MUSIC

Music has a powerful way of speaking to your emotions and memories - with or without words. That’s certainly the case with acclaimed South African pianist, composer and scholar, Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane’s latest album Isigqi. If you’ve grown up in a township where the sounds of South African Jazz legends permeated the air, you will undoubtedly relate to this album. With each song comes a flood of memories of festive Sunday lunches, birthday parties, or large family gatherings where everyone gathers to get to know their extended family. It’s a musical journey through time, delivering nostalgia while still being relevant and enjoyable in 2025.

TIP 1: DECLUTTER YOUR SPACE

The best way to start anew is by getting rid of what no longer serves you and by giving your space a sense of newness. This also serves as an opportunity to donate what you no longer use to someone who is in desperate need of the same thing.

TIP 2: REVIEW AND RESET YOUR GOALS

It may sound like a cliché, but setting goals can often give you a great sense of direction and fulfilment. Take stock of what you have achieved so far and focus on the areas of your life you would like to improve on. You’ll be happy you did when you see yourself achieving your goals!

TIP 3: SPEND TIME OUTSIDE

With the weather warming up, it’s the perfect opportunity to spend some time in the great outdoors. Whether it is a walk, run or hikeembrace nature. We have a beautiful country that’s waiting for you to explore.

Inspired by the influential figures who have shaped Sibusiso’s personal and musical journey, the album serves as both a sonic reflection and a tribute to mentors, community leaders and pioneering artists. It was recorded live at the iconic Bird’s Eye Jazz Club in Basel, Switzerland during a 2024 residency, supported by Pro Helvetia, with Sibusiso performing alongside a Swiss ensemble.

“Isigqi is a culmination of many things: my personal journey, my academic reflections and my tribute to those who walked before me. It’s about recognising how music carries memory, identity and connection,” says Sibusiso. Isigqi - which means beat - is a good representation of the intangible pulse of community, heritage and ubuntu. The album is available on all music streaming platforms.

Born in the small town of Semnan (about 200km east of Tehran in Iran) in 1996, Kamyar Bineshtarigh moved to South Africa with his family when he was 15. Based in Cape Town, he works in a variety of media, with his conceptual concerns ranging from language and communication in all its forms, to the movement, migration and displacement of humankind. Kamyar’s interest in text - particularly Arabic script and calligraphy - has become an explorative means for him to study the nature of mark-making and the cultural complexities that often arise through translation. With many solo exhibitions over the years, his latest - titled Group Show - is at Southern Guild in Cape Town until 23 October 2025.

SKINCARE TIPS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE RADIANT SKIN THIS SPRING

#HelloLifestyle by Esther

Images: Unsplash, Skin Renewal, Skin Republic

With the cold months behind us, our skin also feels the effects of a change of season. Healthy skin has the same characteristics no matter the season: smooth, soft, supple and plump. Knowing the signs of healthy skin helps us recognise when measures need to be taken. The answer to skin problems is not always a 10-step skincare routine, though. A healthy diet and healthy habits (like drinking ample water) are often the best enablers. Why? Because, you are what you eat.

WHAT’S THE SECRET SOURCE?

Skincare aficionados know that the ingredients that go into skincare products determine what you get out of each product. Dr. Nazneen Pilodia believes that when it comes to skincare ingredients, it’s best to cover your bases with more proven ingredients over time. “Staple ingredients such as Retinol, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid and SPF commonly feature in any skincare ritual.” With the rise of interesting ingredients like exosomes, peptides and microalgae, it’s easy to follow the latest crazes of leading ingredients to help you achieve skin worthy of the gods. Be careful, though, not to sacrifice the old and trusted for the new and delightful just to follow trends. Both can work together to achieve vibrant skin.

Peptides are a short chain of amino acids that signal skin to produce collagen, elastin and other proteins. This helps with the appearance of fine lines, building firmer skin and improving the skin's texture. “Peptides are clinically backed and widely respected, which makes them worthy of being included in most skincare routines. It is important that the correct application is followed for permeability,”

Dr. Pilodia warns.

Microalgae are marine-based ingredients rich in antioxidants, minerals and amino acids. These natural ingredients improve hydration and support

skin barrier function. “Microalgae is a great antioxidant-rich, natural ingredient. However, the direct application of raw or dry microalgae in the process of product improvement and application is scarce and requires more clinical research,”

Dr. Pilodia says.

Exosomes are tiny vesicles that are naturally released by cells and carry proteins, lipids and nucleic acids that are often used to deliver growth factors and anti-inflammatory signals. It shows potential in regenerating skin, improving healing and reversing the signs of ageing. “Exosomes are cutting-edge and promising, but more long-term studies are needed to verify their effectiveness.” But, Dr. Pilodia says if you are invested in advanced medical grade skincare, it is worth trying while keeping realistic expectations in mind.

YOUR SKIN ROUTINE CHEAT SHEET

Keep your daily skincare routine simple. Cleansing, moisturising, hydration and applying sunscreen are the most important. Remember, your skin - like life - can go through different seasons. So, here are some tips to follow for all skin types:

For dry and sensitive skin: Boost your skin’s hydration by focusing on skincare products boasting ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, ceramides, Centella Asiatica and Rosehip Oil.

For dull or pigmented skin: There's nothing like a good and trusted source of Vitamin C, Niacinamide and Tranexamic Acid to bring back your skin’s natural glow and improve skin tone.

For ageing and uneven textured skin: Combine Retinol, Bakuchiol and peptides to tackle uneven texture.

For oily or acne-prone skin: Look for skincare products that contain Salicylic Acid, Niacinamide and peptides.

Sunscreen Alert: All skin types require sunscreen with a high sun protection factor. Daily application and reapplication of SPF50 throughout the day is very important, especially if you're in an area where the UV index is more than 3. H

OTHE BIG O :

WHY WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT OBESITY

besity is one of the most urgent health challenges of our time. However, conversations around it are often clouded by stigma, shame and an unhealthy obsession with appearance. The constant noise hides one important truth: obesity is a medical condition, not a cosmetic issue. Addressing it isn’t about fitting into a certain size; it’s about saving lives.

Globally, obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1975. In South Africa alone, more than 68% of women and 31% of men are either overweight or obese, according to the World Health Organization, and it's increasing under the younger population. This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a warning. Obesity significantly increases the risk of a wide range of health conditions that impact every system in the body, even from a young age.

THE HIDDEN HEALTH TOLL

Cardiovascular Disease

Obesity is a major risk factor for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes - all increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Fat accumulationespecially around the abdomen - can cause insulin resistance and inflammation, leading to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, excess body fat is linked to at least 13 types of cancer, including breast (post-menopausal), colorectal, liver, kidney, pancreatic and endometrial cancer. Fat tissue produces hormones and inflammatory signals that can fuel the growth of cancer cells.

Fertility and Hormonal Health

Obesity can disrupt hormonal balance in women and men. For women, it increases the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), irregular menstrual cycles and difficulty falling pregnant. For men, obesity can reduce testosterone levels, affect sperm quality and decrease libido. It can also lead to pregnancy and childbirth complications.

Musculoskeletal Problems

Excess weight places enormous strain on

joints, especially the knees, hips and lower back. This contributes to osteoarthritis, reduced mobility and chronic pain. Obesity is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, because of physical limitations and the accompanying pain.

Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders

Excess weight makes it harder for the lungs to expand and function effectively. This can lead to asthma and obesity hypoventilation syndrome. Or, most commonly, obstructive sleep apnea – a condition that causes breathing to stop and start during sleep. It’s linked to daytime fatigue, increased risk of accidents and heart disease.

Mental Health

While the emotional toll of stigma is real, research also shows that obesity is linked to an increased risk of depression and anxiety. The biological effects of chronic inflammation, insulin resistance and hormonal changes can influence brain chemistry. Evidently, mental and physical health continuously affect one another.

SHIFTING THE CONVERSATION

We need to stop framing obesity as a personal failure or an aesthetic issue. It's

a chronic, complex medical condition influenced by genetics, environment, behavior and socioeconomic status and deserves the same compassionate and evidence-based approach as any other medical concern.

Weight is not the only measure of health. In fact, focusing solely on the scale can lead to frustration and disordered habits. Instead, we should emphasise improving nutrition, increasing physical activity, getting enough sleep, reducing stress and accessing proper medical care.

THE PATH FORWARD

Even modest weight loss - just 5% to 10% of body weight - can lead to significant improvements in health markers like blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. The goal should always be better health, though. Not smaller jeans.

So, let’s keep talking about obesityopenly, honestly and without judgment. The conversation matters because health matters. H

He took guests through notes and pairings while a bespoke stream of Compass Box mixers kept the vibe flowing all night long. It wasn’t just a drink. CARDS ON THE TABLE

Once the spirits were swirling, the games began. Courtesy of Card Monkey, South Africa’s slickest poker event specialists, the energy shifted into playful competition with professional tables, high-quality chips and charismatic dealers straight out of a James Bond film.

Guests pulled up seats and leaned into the thrill of the bluff, the luck of the draw and a few surprising all-ins. For many, it was their first foray into poker and with Card Monkey’s relaxed, guest-friendly approach, it was all smiles and strategy.

Winners walked away with bragging rights and two exclusive, sponsored tickets to highoctane motorsport experiences with the most bespoke cars that had everyone buzzing.

In between it all, guests indulged in moments of luxe, thanks to the incredible treatments by Bolton House. Known for their premium wellness, skincare and male-grooming services, Bolton House offered heavenly

The treatment zone - softly lit and scentfilled - was a cocoon of calm and brought brilliant balance to the night’s excitement. It reminded us that luxury isn’t always loud; sometimes, it’s the soft sigh of a herb-infused towel and a moment to surrender.

As guests chatted in velvet corners or vibed at the bomas, the sound wrapped around them with signature Bang & Olufsen finesse. Stylish to the eye and soothing to the ear, the sound system was one of those elements guests absolutely felt.

FLAVOUR IN EVERY BITE

No great evening is complete without incredible food and Turn 'n Tender in Parktown North stepped in with a curated menu that kept stomachs full and smiles wide. From their iconic fillet skewers and flame-grilled sirloin sliders, the grazing was endless and the plates were ever flowing - a delicious success.

Perfectly paired with Compass Box pours, the food was both comforting and refined, echoing Turn 'n Tender’s reputation as one of Joburg’s top steakhouses - and a firm favourite among guests by the end of the night.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

As the evening wound down and guests lingered for “just one more” nightcap or card game, there was a tangible sense of connection in the air. This wasn’t just an event; it was a collaborative celebrationproof of what happens when brands with shared values come together.

For the Hello Lifestyle team and our extended family of journalists, influencers, creatives and brand partners, the night served as a reminder that great things happen when we gather with intention.

UNTIL NEXT TIME

As Hello Lifestyle continues to grow its network of media collaborators and lifestyle leaders, evenings like this remind us of our mission to elevate everyday luxury, deepen brand stories and build community - one beautiful night at a time. We’ll definitely drink to that! H

SPRINGTIME COCKTAILS

A journey of discovery through spring cocktails & proudly South African moments

As the sun sets on winter and the air begins to bloom with promise, there's no better time to raise a glass to friendship and a little homegrown magic. From iconic brandy legends to refined single malts and adventurous new-age gins, South Africa’s spirit shelf is brimming with stories and taste. Whether you’re gathered around a crackling braai or perched on a city rooftop watching the sky turn gold, these brands bring something uniquely South African to the glass.

KLIPDRIFT - MUST BE KLIPPIES

There’s a reason South Africans have turned Brandy & Coke into a cultural rite of passage. Klipdrift is more than just a brandy - it’s a heritage toast to friendship, sport and storytelling. Their latest campaign, Name The Drink, taps into the affectionate nicknames we give our go-to sips - like ‘Brannas’ or ‘Klippies & Cola’ - with a call to share your favourite moniker online and stand a chance to win big.

COCKTAIL TO TRY: THE SUNSET KLIPPIES

Pour 50ml Klipdrift Premium over ice, top with chilled cola, add a squeeze of orange juice and garnish with a burnt orange wheel.

GLENFIDDICH - RAISE A GLASS

A whisky that echoes legacy and craftsmanship, Glenfiddich is the toast of refined moments. Whether celebrating together or apart, a dram of the awardwinning Glenfiddich 15-Year-Old Solera is smooth, complex and deeply satisfying. It’s whisky that holds a place in your memoriesjust like the people you share it with.

COCKTAIL TO TRY:

GLENFIDDICH GOLDEN HOUR

Mix 50ml Glenfiddich 15 with 10ml honey syrup and 2 dashes of orange bitters. Stir over ice and serve with a citrus twist.

MUSGRAVE GIN - FOR THE BOLD & BOTANICAL

Spring isn’t complete without a little botanical adventure and Musgrave Original Gin is set to turn your sundowner into a conversation starter. Known for its unusual ingredients and floral finesse, Musgrave is the playground for those who enjoy mixing the unexpected.

COCKTAIL TO TRY: BOTANICAL ARRANGEMENT

Shake 50ml Musgrave Original, 15ml blue curaçao, 25ml lime juice, 25ml whey (for texture) and 10ml hibiscus syrup. Garnish with lavender sprigs and lemon zest for a floral, zesty twist that looks as stunning as it tastes.

Whichever spirit you reach for, let spring be your excuse to slow down, sip mindfully and watch the day soften into golden light. South African skies were made for cocktail hour. H

ON THE FRINGE OF GLORY

MEET THE ARTISTS PROUDLY REPRESENTING SOUTH AFRICA AT THE WORLD'S LARGEST ARTS FEST

Every August, performers from around the globe descend on Edinburgh for a massive arts festival that includes theatre, comedy, dance, circus, children’s shows, physical theatre, musicals, opera and more. From 1 to 25 August this year, about 3 million attendees are expected to enjoy 3,352 shows across 265 venues.

For some South African artists, this is a chance to connect with global audiences, attract international touring opportunities and show the world what we can do!

Here are some of the talents proudly representing South Africa at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe:

THEATRE AND DANCE

FLUGHAFEN

Set in a German airport terminal during a mysterious overnight delay, Flughafen follows four strangers trapped in a psychological whirlwind that blends screwball comedy with existential dread. Written and directed by Alice Viskat, this “locked-room mystery” promises laughs, intrigue and the bizarre beauty only a missed connection can bring.

AFRICA POWER: THE COLOUR OF WATER

This visually stunning celebration of African music, dance and acrobatics follows a young hero's journey to save his drought-stricken home while touching the soul of his community. Africa Power is a mesmerising South African street party on stage and a heartfelt love letter to the continent.

YES-YA-YEBO!

Returning after two years of rave reviews and standing ovations, this high-energy song-and-dance extravaganza comes back to the Fringe for a third time. Produced by The Imibala Trust, Yes-Ya-Yebo! showcases South Africa’s 12 official languages through gumboot dancing, gospel harmonies and hits like Jerusalema, all with a captivating township vibe.

COMEDY

KATE PINCHUCK - DON’T PANIC!

SAFTA-nominated comic, Kate Pinchuck flips therapy culture on its head in a hilarious dive into mental health, oversharing and the curse of having two psychologist parents. Don’t Panic! feels like group therapy with “the world’s foremost qualified unqualified pseudo-therapist comedian” that may not solve your own issues, but will certainly make you laugh about them.

DEVIN GRAY - HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MARRIAGE

After a Best Newcomer nomination at Fringe 2024, Devin Gray returns with a fresh, sharp show about married life and the anxiety of surviving an ADHD German spouse. For anyone married or thinking about it, this comedy is fresh, sharp and deeply relatable.

PHIL DE LANGE - THE PHIL MONTY

Armed with a ukulele and a broken heart, Phil blends comedy, music and raw honesty in a show that’s part therapy, part riot. From WhatsApp group politics to grief and premature midlife crises, The Phil Monty hits all the right (and wrong) notes.

Keep a lookout for their victory homecoming performances, which they will no doubt plan for the coming months when they return to South Africa after dazzling Edinburgh audiences. H

WATERFALL’S STYLISH NEW DARLING GIGI RESTAURANT

Located within the lively lifestyle precinct that is Waterfall Corner, Gigi is the kind of place you stumble upon and immediately want to tell everyone about, while secretly hoping that it stays a hidden treasure.

The electricity of a Saturday night in Joburg paired perfectly with the warm buzz of Gigi’s - a cosmopolitan eatery capturing refined, yet approachable dining that celebrates vibrant South African flavours with a global twist.

Dishing charm, a creative menu and interiors that fit a chic city escape, we were immediately welcomed by the beautiful aesthetics of floor-to-ceiling windows, velvet chairs in jewel tones, marble-topped tables, statement lighting and greenery spilling from the ceiling. A spacious terrace catches the golden late-afternoon light, ensuring a dreamy dining adventure.

At the heart of Gigi is executive chef and co-owner, Moses Moloi - a fast-rising star who brings a touch of drama to every plate. Enveloping all your senses from the get-go, his locally rooted menu is both authentic and elevated - whether you’re there for a power lunch, indulgent dinner or laid-back weekend brunch.

A soulful dish not to be missed is Moloi's oxtail, morogo (African spinach) and vetkoek. He calls this signature dish “an ode to his Free State childhood.” All fish at Gigi is flown

in fresh from Cape Town, making the tuna tartare - which arrives perched atop crispy rice with a zingy ponzu dressing - worth a try. The sea bass with mussels and vermicelli is another must from the menu, celebrated for its crisp skin and rich creamy potjie sauce.

Red meat lovers will enjoy the lamb rack, cooked to perfection and served with mint chimichurri, charred fine beans, pap and chakalaka. Or, opt for the Gigi burger with wagyu beef, smoked cheddar and caramelised onions - another signature dish worth the hype. It's messy, juicy and deeply satisfying!

Vegetarians aren’t forgotten here: the roasted aubergine with miso glaze and tahini drizzle is beautifully balanced and packed with flavour.

And, don't you dare skip dessert! The locally infused rooibos jelly and vanilla custard with raspberry sorbet is a creamy dream.

Further to the food, drinks can be ordered from a playful and polished cocktail and wine list. The Gigi’s Garden gin cocktail, with fresh cucumber and elderflower, is as refreshing as it is Instagrammable, while the wine list offers a smart mix of local labels and European favourites.

Next time, we’ll opt for one of Moloi’s rotating monthly tasting menus (served weekly) - a seven-course delight that chooses one star ingredient for each course. From the drinks to the plates, it ensures that you dine with all your seven senses.

What really sets Gigi apart, though, is its triple threat of great food, great style and a great vibe and Johannesburg’s dining scene is even more fabulous for it. H

A WELLNESS RITUAL TO REPEAT:

A Couple's Journey of Bliss at Camelot Spa in Melrose Arch

Cosy in the cosmopolitan heart of Melrose Arch, Camelot Spa is a place where time slows, the mood is indulgent and every moment is focused on relaxation, well-being and comfort. It’s a wellness destination that actually practices what it preaches; a place where couples can truly unplug from the world and connect with each other.

In our comfy gowns and with a cup of fragrant herbal tea, we instantly felt the Camelot Spa philosophy of restoring equilibrium, awakening the senses and inducing calmness and serenity. The interiors combine aesthetics and comfort seamlessly, with warm tones, soft textures and subtle lighting that reassure the spirit.

Our journey started with a dip in the cold plunge. The shock factor of this frenetic kickoff was massive and hit us with a giant dose of life - a pleasantly invigorating experience said to decrease inflammation and stimulate the nervous system. Post plunge, we felt reborn: lighter; cleaner; unexpectedly calm - as if a button on a mental refresh had just been pressed.

This was followed by the highlight of our visit: a 60-minute Camelot Universal Signature Massage. The treatment was carried out in a dimly lit treatment room for couples, with earthly tones and soft, luxurious linen. The perfect fusion of hot stone, kahuna, Balinese and Indian Head massage relaxed every muscle. What made the facial particularly unforgettable was that Camelot used its signature massage candle. Its warm oils seeped into the skin and its lingering scent was nourishing. The therapists worked with a gentle force, tailoring the treatment pressure while maintaining a smooth, steady rhythm that lured each knot and pressure point into submission. It was less treatment, more journey - a deeply grounding and selfindulgent one.

For those wishing to prolong this health ritual, Camelot Spa Melrose Arch boasts a comprehensive array of experiences, from Himalayan Salt Saunas and Thalgo Marine Facials to Signature CBD Wellness Journeys

and Bellabaci Cupping Therapies. The retail area is also there to encourage you to take the spa experience home, with an impressive selection of high-end skincare and body products.

Whether you have something special to celebrate or just want to retreat from the

hustle and bustle of Joburg, a couple's treatment at Camelot Spa Melrose Arch is a rare chance to take a step away from the rush and savour the art of stillness - together. H 1 melrosespa.co.za

UNTAMED AND UNPRETENTIOUS

Inside Ongetem, Bertus Basson’s Bold New Restaurant

#HelloCapeTown by Sharon Waugh Images: Supplied

When we heard that local food legend, Bertus Basson had opened a new restaurant and that the likes of Jamie Oliver had been seen dining there, we knew we had to give Ongetem (meaning Untamed) a try.

Since it's located at the new Canopy by Hilton Cape Town Longkloof, you'll be forgiven for assuming that Ongetem is a fine dining restaurant aimed at wealthy tourists. This couldn’t be further from the truth, though. The chic interiors are punctuated with offbeat decorative elements. From the motorcycle in the corner to the neon light signs and the skull-shaped salt and pepper shakers, the tone is set for a casual dining experience with a rebellious, but welcoming spirit.

Despite the odd international celebrity guest, for the most part, the diners here seem to be locals, and the prices on the restaurant’s à la carte menu (no eight-course tasting menus here) seem surprisingly affordable. Any pretentiousness appears to dissipate before one passes the two-story giraffe in the hotel foyer and the flavours are every bit as bold as the décor.

Known for his award-winning establishments like Eike, Chorus and Spek & Bone, Basson’s approach to food celebrates South Africa’s heritage with a contemporary approach. At Ongetem, the guiding philosophy is “Butcher, Baker, Cocktail Maker,” which is exactly how we approached the meal…but in reverse.

We kicked things off with a Signature G&T, crafted with a Pienaar & Son Orient gin and jasmine rice syrup. Aromatic and crisp.

Then, we began the meal (as one should here) with wood-fired flatbread. There are five topping options, but we went straight for the oxtail jam with bread and butter pickles. It was sweet, savoury, sticky and smoky; a flavourful way to whet the appetite.

The starter of Puglia burrata with mulled pear, pistachio and olive oil hit all the right notes: creamy, crunchy, fruity and rich.

For mains, we sampled two dishes. The Ricotta gnudi with kale butter sauce, almonds and charred kale was a wonderful mix of warm, comforting flavours, perfectly balanced textures and a bit of greenery to reach your nutrient quota for the day. The steak, meanwhile, was pure indulgence: dryaged, flame-seared and perfectly pink inside. From the options available, we chose Café de

Paris butter to complement it and it did so beautifully with a delicious mix of flavours.

For a side dish, we had the sweet potato with orange glaze and pecans, which was sweet, crunchy and bursting with flavour. Considering this restaurant has such a focus on meat, the quality of the vegetarian dishes came as a surprise.

We finished off the meal with the Grand Maière Soufflé, which was perfectly light, fluffy and warm. The flavours were subtle with a hint of zest - not too sweet; not too eggy. Just the perfect way to end a meal on a high note.

With its proudly South African menu, untamed design and come-as-you-are energy, Ongetem is set to become a beloved Cape Town institution. H

MISCHU

First there were Cronuts, then there were Crookies, and then followed Cruffins (honestly, some of us missed that one). Now, a new croissant-related trend has emerged: the Croissant Cube. Mischu is a simple, no-frills, Sea Point coffee shop with a committed crowd of regulars. It is renowned for serving some of the best coffee and cappuccinos in Cape Town and now, they are raising the bar with pastries too. If you think there can’t be anything that special about a geometrically shaped croissant, think again. Available in pistachio, raspberry and chocolate hazelnut, Mischu's Croissant Cubes are not just topped with these flavours, but the centres are also filled with them. They’re freshly baked each day and heated to exactly the right temperature to be perfectly flaky on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. CAPE TOWN MEADERY

If you’re looking for the most appropriate drink to enjoy with your braai on Heritage Day, mead may be the answer. This ancient beverage, made with fermented honey, dates back over 20,000 years in the African bush. Though other parts of the world have their own versions, Cape Town Meadery honours the African tradition, reimagining the world’s oldest fermented drink with a contemporary edge. Their mead brand, Indicator, takes its name from the Greater Honeyguide Bird, a species deeply woven into the story of honey in southern Africa. All of their meads are made entirely from ethically sourced wild African honey and fermented with wild yeast. The range spans from sweet to dry, including the bold chilli-infused Fire Mead (crafted with African bird’s eye chillies), as well as a Glühwein-inspired version. The company also offers mead tastings. This is the perfect way to raise a glass to the past while enjoying the present.

LOXTONIA CIDER

While Cape Town is often associated with the winelands surrounding it and visitors often enjoy a wine tasting during their stay, those looking for something a little different will find a refreshing alternative at Loxtonia Cider. The farm-to-bottle process relies on natural ingredients and sustainable methods which visitors can learn more about during a tasting. With its relaxed atmosphere and mountain views, Loxtonia offers an easygoing escape, perfect for a laid-back day trip.

OLIVE VALLEY WALKS

In Paarl's beautiful Waterfall Valley, there is a new guided walking activity to take part in. Olive Valley Walks, part of Cape Country Routes, takes people on a very manageable 5km walk through an olive grove, a buchu farm and natural wilderness, stopping to admire the incredible views and learn about the trees and fynbos found along the way.

Upon your return to The Retreat, you get to do a tasting of the extra virgin olive oil grown and pressed on the estate and flavoured with the fynbos you discovered on your walk - all beautifully paired with different breads and other treats. Then, you can wash this down with some fynbos tea before making your own marzipan with almonds (also grown in the area) and more fynbos. Olive Valley Walks offers various short itineraries with options that include visits to a cheetah sanctuary and a wine estate. AFRO-BOER WHERE AFROS, AFRIKAANS & ALL THINGS LEKKER GATHER

The trees outside were bare, but inside, Afro-Boer was booming. Friends met up, celebrating birthdays. Moms and daughters, grandparents and grandchildren - they all came through the doors as we sat waiting for the glass of Steenberg bubbly we’d ordered. It’s that kind of place - where families get

together to enjoy the best slow food the city has to offer.

The name Afro-Boer speaks to Pretoria (and South Africa’s) rich cultural heritage. In fact, their menu gives a great explanation: “An afro is a hairstyle worn naturally by people with spunk! It is specifically styled

by individuals in such a fashion that it represents a large, rounded shape - much like a halo, cloud or ball - certainly one of the more eye-catching styles… rebelling against the ‘short’ hairstyle that marks a revolutionary and the long flowing hairstyles that mostly celebrate women’s self-image… nonetheless, suitably African and worn with pride on this continent.” On the other side, they say: “Boer is the Dutch and Afrikaans word for farmer… a wanderer or traveller being nomadic and free-spirited, looking for land to earn a living off. The desire to wander, known as ‘trekgees’ was a noble characteristic of the Boers.”

It came as no surprise then that our hostess, Thabiso, arrived at our table with her own afro and a whole lot of spunk! We ordered the traditional Bobotie, which came with yellow rice and a lovely, fresh tomato relish. Naturally, the menu offers an array of local dishes, be it for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. Whether you think of slow food as being made from fresh, locally produced products or comfort food that slows you down, you’ll find it all here. Think Roosterkoek with Kakamas-peach butter, naartjie syrup and grated boerenkaas Or, Melkkos (a typical Afrikaans Sunday evening meal of milk porridge thickened with buttered flour crumbs, served with cinnamon sugar and at Afro-Boer, also a hint of naartjie peel.) You can also enjoy some Plaasbrood French Toast for breakfast, topped with bacon, fried banana, berries in koeksister syrup and whipped cream. Brunch boasts biltong and brie omelettes for the sophisticated and a Boere Boepie for those seeking “stoneground blêddie grof putu pap” and kaiings boerewors with a sheba. Even the little ones can indulge in biltong putu pap - a favourite among South Africans, especially in the Afrikaans community.

The menu wouldn’t be complete without Afro-Boer’s famous Braaibroodjies, another South African favourite. From the Kwaai Braaibroodjie to the Van The Man, you’re bound to find something that tickles your taste buds.

The restaurant offers seating inside, on the porch, under the trees and in a more private dining room, making it an exceptionally versatile venue perfect for private events too. Nextdoor, you’ll find beautiful lawns and a children’s playground. And, if you come in winter, you might even be able to order a hot mug of glühwein too!

Spot the chickens (that also come with their own afros) and slow down at Afro-Boer. H

THE VOORTREKKER MONUMENT

Another architectural masterpiece in Pretoria, and one that’s just as rich in history, is the Voortrekker Monument. Located just south of the city, this enormous granite structure was erected in December 1949 and is known as the home of the Afrikaner. Designed by architect, Gerard Moerdijk, it was built to commemorate the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854. Today, it is a National Heritage Site, standing 62m high with a base of 40m x 40m. Resembling monuments like the Dôme des Invalides in France and the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig, Germany, it’s a must-see for anyone interested in history, heritage and architecture. Other features not to miss while visiting include: Anton van Wouw’s sculpture of the Voortrekker Woman and Children and a statue of Piet Retief. If you time your visit well, you might even be able to attend one of Fever’s Pretoria-based Candlelight Concerts here. On 6 September you can listen to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and more at this incredible venue, as well as The Best of Hans Zimmer. For more information on these concerts, visit feverup.com. It was completed in 1898 and was surrounded by a moat and while it had a drawbridge, the moat never contained water as the shale from which it was cut was too porous. Still, it was an additional defence mechanism and various pieces of heavy artillery were placed in this fort. Today, it houses a museum with permanent exhibitions of war objects and furniture. There is also a stable complex, picnic areas and an old steam locomotive that was used during the war. Visiting hours are from 06:00 to 18:00.

ISLANDS ARE CALLING WHITE BEACHES AND TURQUOISE WATERS ARE WHAT MAKE THESE INDIAN OCEAN DESTINATIONS SO INVITING.

We’re inching towards the end of the year, which promises time off for most of us. Naturally, you might be contemplating whether you should spend that time working on all the projects you had set out to complete at home, or whether you will give yourself the gift of rest by taking a holiday. If the latter is what you are leaning towards, this article might just be the inspiration you need.

The appeal of the Indian Ocean islands is often assigned to their variety, uniqueness and favourable weather conditions. Not to mention the warm waters and dreamy beaches. That's probably why so many bucket list island retreats have been developed in this region. So, we’ve done the hard work for you, looking into some of the most exciting, yet off the beaten track island offerings. These destinations promise amazing holidays and the opportunity to experience some of nature's most incredible jewels - all while keeping them conserved and protected for future generations to enjoy. More than a holiday, these Indian Ocean Island destinations are bound to provide you with something more than mere relaxation. In fact, you're sure to return with memories that will last a lifetime.

WHEN THE JOURNEY IS PART OF THE HOLIDAY

Cruise liners offer a unique holiday experience that can cater to various types of travellers on one vessel. They make the journey, as opposed to the destination, the main experience. Considering the vast array activities, excursions and food offered on cruise liners, it's undoubtedly an escape from reality worth looking into for the whole family - young and old.

Shirley-Anne Henry, Regional ManagerWestern Cape of Flight Centre, has over 25 years of experience in travel planning and knows very well how incredibly wonderful (or how terribly disappointing) a holiday can be. It all comes down to relying on travel consultants’ expertise, especially when you are travelling to tricky, but beautiful destinations. Flight Centre offers a variety of travel options, but the MSC Opera and the Azamara Cruise Lines stand out for their unique offerings that include stops on Reunion Island and Madagascar – all in one trip. It offers the perfect opportunity for travellers to indulge in warm and friendly service onboard while also exploring some of the world's most intriguing African islands.

REUNION ISLAND

“Reunion Island isn’t always a popular holiday destination, simply because it’s one of the lesser-known islands,” says ShirleyAnne. “The island offers a rustic and different experience. If you can imagine the adventures of Robertson Crusoe, I think Reunion would be the perfect place to use as a reference.” Home to one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Piton de la Fournais is situated in an area that has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With diverse altitudes, travellers can experience diverse climates depending on where they are, but overall, the island enjoys the benefits of a tropical climate. And, the combination of lush vegetation and red landscapes bring about a sense of outer space. The most enjoyable experiences on the island, though, are a nature-lover's dream. Hiking, walking and quad biking are but a few examples of ways to spend your time on Reunion Island.

MADAGASCAR

Nosy Be is Madagascar’s biggest tourist attraction island, known as one of the best snorkelling and diving destinations in the world because of its crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life. WITNESS THE EMERGING GARDEN

Of the over 1,000 coral islands in the Maldives, Kanifinolhu emerges from the Indian Ocean like a garden island; a village just breaking the surface of the water

alongside a white sandy beach. Nestled on this idyllic island, Club Med Kani offers a dreamlike setting: crystal-clear lagoons, powder-white beaches and overwater villas that seem to float on the sea. What sets this island apart isn't just its beauty; it’s an adventure-meets-relaxation formula you wouldn't find anywhere else. It’s also one of the only places in the Maldives where you can try a flying trapeze over the water - a spectacular and unexpected thrill. And, that’s only the beginning.

According to Brendah Nyakudya, Content, PR & Social Influence Manager - Southern Africa at Club Med, the best thing you can expect from a stay at Club Med Kani is a no-stress, everything-is-taken-careof holiday. “From the moment you land at Malé Velana International Airport, we handle your speedboat transfers, accommodation, meals, daily activities, entertainment and childcare. You don’t need to plan a single thing (though you can pre-book spa treatments or special excursions). It’s the perfect option for couples, families or solo travellers who want luxury without the logistics,” Brendah says. There’s fun for everyone at Club Med Kani, because even the kiddies’ schedules are taken care of, freeing up your time to relax, explore and indulge.

With such a special place that’s part of a hub of tourist destinations, it’s good to

know that the focus is also on benefiting the land and its people. Over 75% of the resort staff are from the region and established partnerships with local farming initiatives exist where the resort supports sustainable agriculture and education. Guests can also participate in traditional cooking demos, dance shows and storytelling nights. The resort itself also benefits from green innovations, such as in-house water treatments, embracing eco-architecture where all structures are designed to respect the natural setting and marine life, and a policy to reduce plastic and imports.

To experience this island paradise, earmark your travel to take place during the Maldives’ spring season, which is between March and May.

PICK SEASHELLS IN THE SEYCHELLES

It may be Africa's smallest country, but the Seychelles Islands delivers scenic views, adventure and fun for everyone.

The 115-island archipelago offers luxury beach breaks, adventure, conservation and discovery. From the granite Inner Islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue - with their towering boulders, dense rainforests and mountainous terrain - to the Outer Islands and their pristine beaches, clear water, abundant marine life and utter seclusion.

Christine Vel, Director of the Seychelles Tourism Board, shares how the island appeals to all: “Families, friends, couples and solo travellers will find their slice of paradise in the Seychelles. Whether

it’s diving (with the hope of spotting the blue-striped pygmy goby - a new species of deeper water reef fish discovered in 2024), salt-water fly fishing on the extraordinary island of Alphonse, or exploring secluded beaches and hidden bays.” If you're an animal lover, spotting a giant Aldabra tortoise (these gentle giants enchant both young and old) will be one of the highlights of your visit to the Seychelles. Or, if you are in dire need of carefree beach days spent swimming, snorkelling and sailing, there is that too, of course.

Adventure seekers can enjoy world-class trail running (including the annual Seychelles

Nature Trail Challenge), while budding marine biologists can engage in meaningful marine conservation efforts - from coral reef restoration to turtle monitoring - at Kempinski Seychelles Resort’s WiseOceans Marine Discovery Programme.

VITAMIN SEA FOR THE SOUL

Off the northeast coast of Ungujathe largest island of the Tanzanian Archipelago, Zanzibar - lies a sacred jewel in the middle of nowhere: Mnemba Island. &Beyond Mnemba Island is a unique offering of 12 open-air bandas tucked

beneath Casuarina trees. This unique beach paradise is located on an island that is 1,5 km in circumference, with the whitest coral sand and turquoise water. A stay here offers travellers the opportunity to disconnect and get back to basics. Here, it's all about island living and those in the know will tell you that there's no need for shoes as the sand is so warm and your only requirement is to live slowly. As the locals say: “Pole- pole.”

Travellers who like to stay busy can engage in full watersports activities like snorkelling, scuba diving with a scuba diving centre, paddle boats and doha cruises. “We have a wonderful Activities Manager, Kelvin, who helps guests with finding the perfect activities that they can choose to fill their days with. The water is calm and flat all day long, so we make use of our Hobie Eclipse, which is a combination of a standup paddleboard and a paddle boat. You can just sit back, relax and paddle around the island,” says Tonya Siebert, a Travel Specialist from &Beyond.

For those who really want to hit the pause button and come back to self, there are a variety of wellness and healing offeringsfrom yoga and meditation to spa rooms that offer traditional treatments, as well as Reiki and Sound Healing Therapy.

All this exists in a space where conservation is a big theme that ensures the sustainability of the island. &Beyond’s conservation efforts on Mnemba Island include building artificial reefs to encourage the growth of coral. They also encourage no overfishing, as that helps in attracting diverse marine life. The staff are all invested in these efforts, with 85% of them having been born and bred in the neighbouring fishing villages. Evidently, they take pride in protecting the island. Guests can also participate in these conservation efforts and witness the work themselves - particularly during the Green Sea Turtle nesting season, when the mother turtles lay their eggs. The team at &Beyond marks and monitors these nesting areas and will also encourage guests to witness the eggs hatch and the baby turtles head back into the ocean.

The hardest part of making this experience possible, is sending an email outlining what you would need. Then, let the team handle everything else and don’t forget to leave your shoes at home! H 1 andbeyond.com Q @andbeyondmnemba

THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) REVOLUTION

THE ROAD AHEAD IS ELECTRIC – AND IT’S ROLLING ON MICHELIN PRIMACY 5S

South Africans are beginning to feel the throb of the electric vehicle (EV) revolution and although our local economy’s not quite in top gear, one thing is certain: the wheels are turning.

The appeal is undeniable. EVs are quieter, cleaner and cheaper to drive than their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. And, as international automakers start to retire petrol and diesel vehicles, South Africa is set for a shake-up in how we get around. However, rallying around EVs on home turf still has its own challenging potholes. High upfront vehicle costs, patchy charging infrastructure, poor power supply and range anxiety are speed breakers on the road to putting more electric vehicles on the floor. But the path is also paved with innovation and excitement.

From family hybrids to delivery vans, the EV boom is growing. Whatever your power - petrol, plug-in or full electric - one thing is unchanged: premium tyres for safety, silence and distance. That brings us to the new Michelin Primacy 5 - a secondgeneration tyre that’s been developed to reflect today's changing needs and environmentally conscious drivers, but also to suit the electric age.

Whether around town in a compact EV, on a journey with a cross-country hybrid, or hauling goods in a commercial e-van, the Michelin Primacy 5 is designed to elevate the ride - and the range.

Michelin’s latest and greatest provides 18% more mileage than the previous generation and raises wet braking with 4% thanks to a patented tread pattern and deeper grooves to evacuate water quicker. This is increased safety even on a wet Highveld afternoon.

For EV drivers in particular, comfort and quietness are key and the Primacy 5 delivers. The Silent Rib Gen-3 technology minimises in-cabin noise and MaxTouch Technology allows for optimal contact with the road across pressure and heat. This distributes the force exerted by acceleration and braking evenly - a key feature for the heavy EVs with instant torque.

Whether for sedans or hatchbacks, crossovers or SUVs, Primacy 5 will fit them allICE, hybrid and electric. With more than 40 sizes available in 2025 and a considerable expansion in 2026, motorists in South Africa are now able to purchase one of the market’s best EV-ready tyres. Michelin’s new Primacy 5 Tyres start from R2,599 per tyre.

EC35 - The EV Workhorse

For business customers, this vehicle represents an attractive proposition: a serious payload, very competitive running costs (from 40c/km) and the ability to charge completely in just 60 minutes. Its green efficiency appeals to delivery-centric businesses and logistics start-ups seeking to trim the price, but not the punch. If you factor in solar charging, Bluetooth, aircon and Apple CarPlay, this is obviously not your average panel van. It’s an EV for entrepreneurs and at a subR600k price plus its healthy warranty, it demonstrates going electric can also be good for business and the planet. The DFSK EC35 is priced from R495,000.

iCAUR - Born To Play

Daring, expressive and full of personality, iCAUR is Chery’s dynamic new energy vehicle brand, preparing to electrify South Africa in 2026. With a lifestyle-first trend, iCAUR claims to deliver emotionally connected vehicles with retro-futuristic styling and user-centric innovations. Supported by automotive powerhouse, Chery Group, and inspired by South Africa’s rich urban culture, iCAUR is not only making cars - it’s building an entire mobility ecosystem of lifestyle merchandise, content and experiences. It’s all about accessibility and fun and with 15 dealerships penned in for launch, this new kid on the block is poised to bring a whole lot of excitement to Mzansi’s EV market.

1 chery.co.za Q @cherysouthernafrica

Even with these bold moves, South Africa’s desire for electric vehicles is still in its infancy. Ultimately, public education and infrastructure development are crucial. Additional charge points (especially those of high speed), less range anxiety and incentives to manufacture close by could be game changers. Whether your next trip is along the Garden Route, through Sandton or across the Karoo, make sure you’re treading on tread designed for the journey. While the road to South Africa’s electric future may have some potholes, it’s a road worth taking. H

A SPLASH OF SPRING

Spring brings with it a renewed sense of hope, energy and optimism. The days are getting longer, the air is a little warmer and suddenly, there’s an urge to fling open the windows and change things up. This pull towards joyful exuberance is reflected in this year’s spring décor trends. Forget predictable palettes and safe choices. 2025 is all about embracing personality, boldness and fun! If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are some of the biggest Spring 2025 décor trends for your home and garden:

MAXIMALISM

The trend of maximalism is not new, but it’s not going anywhere either. This aesthetic encourages the layering of colours, textures, eclectic furniture and meaningful items to make your space feel unapologetically yours.

Currently, bold patterns and pattern clashing are still very much in, as are florals and oversized botanical motifs. Don’t be afraid to juxtapose florals, plaid, gingham and other prints and layer in a variety of textures. Want to go all in? There’s never been a better time to experiment with unique colour clashes. If it makes you smile, you’re doing it right!

‘NEW-STALGIA’ AND VINTAGE REVIVAL

FOR THE HOME

There's a deep comfort in the familiar and this spring, we're seeing something of a dance between the past and the present. While the trend of vintage revival simply reintroduces retro elements into your décor, ‘New-stalgia’ blends them with contemporary design to create a sense of nostalgia while still feeling modern and current. Whichever one you opt for, these trends introduce a certain timeless charm into your home.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN AND NATURAL ELEMENTS

The desire to bring the outdoors indoors continues strong and when better to do this than in spring? From lush indoor plants to natural materials like wood, stone, rattan, bamboo, jute and woven textiles, bringing nature into your home can make your living space feel more harmonious and inviting. Currently, there is also a big movement towards sustainable materials, with a focus on items that are locally sourced. Not only can you make your home look beautiful, but you get bonus points for reducing environmental impact.

Lily Woven Pendant, R5,000 1 esque.co.za

PERSONALISATION AND UNEXPECTED ACCESSORIES

Storytelling and personal style have never been so in vogue. People increasingly want homes that reflect themselves and their unique personalities. Not only are they opting for quirky and unexpected statement pieces, but anything one-of-a-kind or bespoke is taking preference over all things cookie-cutter and mass-produced. Distinctive artisanal crafts, hand-painted cushions and handmade ceramics - often deliberately imperfect - make for great statement pieces.

FOR THE GARDEN

EDIBLE LANDSCAPES & POTAGER GARDENS

DECORATIVE CEILINGS & WALLS

The days of ’keep it neutral’ are taking a little break. From bold wallpaper and mural art (on the walls and even on the ceiling) to subtle wood panelling for depth and texture, this season is all about unexpected flair everywhere you look. Colourful stone - such as onyx and quartzite - and textured tiles are increasingly chosen over those white subway tiles we all got. Ceilings have been turned into fifth walls and walls into canvases.

Museum Botanical Floral & Parrot Wallpaper R3,060 1 dreamweaverstudios.co.za

The joy of harvesting your own food is a simple pleasure that continues to gain momentum this season. Growing edible plants comes with a new twist: a potager garden. This Frenchinspired kitchen garden features vegetables and herbs, grown alongside flowers, with a strong emphasis on aesthetic beauty and design. Another trend involves gardeners integrating fruit trees, berry bushes, herbs and vegetables directly into their ornamental beds. Whether your veggie patch is pretty or not, the trend of growing edible plants is booming.

VERTICAL GARDENS

Not everyone has space for rolling lawns and flowerbeds. As urban living continues to expand, making the most of every available square metre has become an art form. Vertical gardens, living walls and wallmounted planters are flourishing. They’re perfect for balconies, patios and small courtyards. In fact, they even make great backdrops for selfies!

BIODIVERSITY AND REWILDING

Gardeners are moving away from perfectly manicured lawns and embracing a wilder, more natural look. This means planting native species that thrive in the local climate and support wildlife - from essential pollinators, like bees and butterflies, to birds. This also means allowing some areas to be less tidy. The focus is on fostering a healthy ecosystem within your garden - one that is usually more eco-friendly and water-wise.

BALANCING BUSINESS AND PLEASURE

by getting the best out of being a digital nomad

The world is settling into a more hybrid way of work, but the demand for remote work and the gig economy continues to account for a rise in digital nomads. This lifestyle may come with challenges and disappointments, but it can also be rewarding when considered carefully. It allows work and play coexist.

RANDS AND SENSE

The digital nomad lifestyle is appealing, making the freedom of travel and work at the same time a reality. In theory, this sounds amazing but navigating such a lifestyle can be tricky. The cost of living in some cities and countries is often underestimated and access to basic services like reliable electricity and internet connectivity is a challenge worldwide. According to the World Economic Forum, at least 2,5 billion people globally still lack internet access. Therefore, your choice of destination as a digital nomad needs to be informed.

Global Citizen Solutions - a boutique investment migration firm - recently conducted a Global Digital Nomad’s report, identifying 65 countries that offer the most appealing options for digital nomads. It takes into consideration things like visa requirements, tax regulations and overall

quality of life. The options are endless, with some countries - like Spain, Japan, Bali and the United Arab Emirates - being sought after holiday destinations.

After finding the best destination, finding the right productivity tools will help you plan your tasks and days optimally, helping you achieve the perfect work-life balance. Tools like Calendly, Trello and Miro can help you plan your workdays by setting aside sufficient time for meetings, planning, tracking progress and brainstorming. Being intentional about your day and the time you dedicate to various activities that bring fulfilment is the greatest benefit of being a digital nomad. So, make time to schedule downtime and social time in your day.

A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE FOR MONEY

Of course, a handy tool for any traveller is a bank account that allows flexibility when it comes to switching between currencies. This becomes even more important when you are a digital nomad. On-demand access to different currencies comes at a cost. Still, banks like Investec offers one card that allows access to multiple currencies. This eliminates anxiety about currency conversions or using multiple cards to make payments in different countries. “Clients

way to transact in multiple currencies without the hassle. Our multicurrency pockets for Private Bank Accounts have been designed precisely to meet these evolving needs in an increasingly digital and borderless financial landscape,” shares Itumeleng Merafe, Head of Investec Private Bank. One of many innovations underpinning this account lies in Investec’s Intelligent Routing™, which ensures that transactions are automatically processed in the relevant currency pocket or in rands without manual intervention.
