Good(e)Life's

Roger Goode on his love for life, LEGO and the sound of SA

He parked his black Merc at The Peech Hotel, his hair and outfit styled to perfection by none other than his talented wife, Kyla. By the looks of things, radio host, sound geek and well-travelled DJ, Roger Goode’s got it down when it comes to juggling work, life and family. So much so that his wife is even his personal stylist! All jokes aside, though, he’s lately come to realise that life is not only fun when DJing in Ibiza, but in various other aspects too, including radio and family.

As he entered the stunning space that is now the new home of the famous Pot Luck Club by Luke Dale Roberts, we could hardly wait to sit down with him. With an electrifying presence, we instantly understood what had brought about the many awards he’s been collecting. Not to mention the MTV gigs he’s had (including covering red carpets), shows from private jets with the likes of Rihanna, broadcasts alongside BBC Radio 1 from Café Mambo in Ibiza, interviews with Richard Branson, Timberland, William Shatner and more. All in all, he’s a radio maverick and digital arms dealer to be reckoned with.

Goode’s first love has always been broadcasting, and the spin-off is, of course, entertaining people. Most of his weekends are filled with live performances, which –according to him – is a tough life. “You’re passing friends in the airports, you don’t get to go to 21st birthdays and, you know, Christmas time and New Year’s Eve is a mess and you’re not at home. It’s always been like that. It’s been my life for 25 years.” Currently,

though, he is “rocking and rolling on 5FM.”

Goode’s done the Afternoon Drive Show, the Breakfast Show and he got back into doing a specialist music show every evening, which is what won the radio station and himself the Best Afternoon Drive Show Award at the South African Radio Awards for both 2023 and 2024.

When he’s not on air, he is also a director of a digital media agency through which he does all kinds of festivals, entertainment and club-based music events. “My core love and passion is audio of all kinds. I’ve got a sound studio in a bunker underneath our house in the mountain in the rocks – it’s like a wine cellar which we’ve converted. I’ve been building it for over a decade. It’s insane. We can do anything. We can broadcast live on air, shoot podcasts and produce music. I call it the 'engine room'. It’s sick. So, I spend most of my time in there, just building LEGO with sound.” Essentially, sound is the commodity he trades in.

INTRIGUED BY THE THEATRE OF THE MIND

Goode says he came out of his mom "dancing". He’s always been a tech geek, interested in digital transmissions and similar things. In fact, his uncle was into IT in the 90s and that’s where he initially fell for the

inner workings of audio. For him, a fusion between sound, music and comedy is the most beautiful way to spend your life. “Most people who wake up can rarely say they get butterfly-nervous before they go to work… I can tell you one thing that I find mindblowing: Every day I learn something. I never thought that was possible. Every day is a new tapestry.”

The radio host has always been fascinated with the "theatre of the mind" and how one can draw people in by telling a story with different assets and sounds. With radio being a traditional, old-school medium, he says: “In this modern-day digital landscape, the challenge – and it’s a fun challenge – is to try and come up with a reason for people to listen to radio. That’s always been my position.”

“The majority of the world experienced the moon landing on radio… In World War II, radio was used to communicate inside ghettos. It’s a powerful thing… I mean, you go on air, you put your mic on, you play something, or you do something and these frequencies sort of just vanish into the ether. It’s kind of magic.”

A GLOBAL PHENOMENON

Lucky for him, Goode gets to put all kinds of sound into the ether, whether through

The Luke Dale Roberts Group’s The Pot Luck Club, known for its bold, inventive small plates, has recently opened the doors to its new space at The Peech Hotel in Melrose, offering patrons an elegant dining experience of note. It was recently awarded Two Luxe Stars at the 2025 Luxe Restaurant Awards.

DID YOU KNOW?

Roger Goode is an avid LEGO collector. “I’ve got all the collectors’ Star Wars. I’ve got a cupboard with boxes of all the collectors’ stuff – still sealed. There is something about it that takes me back to when I was a kid and I was carefree – best times of your life! Before you get to about eleven. Those are the best times of your life.” One of his favourite family pastimes is to play LEGO with his daughter, Halo.

radio or at an event. He says South Africa is currently going through a musical revolution, particularly when it comes to urban sounds. “Amapiano is an anomaly. It’s an extraordinary thing where a genuine, original South African genre of music, which was born and bred here, is now heard in clubs, live shows and festivals all over the world. Our own superstar DJs – Durban Gogo, Shimza, Black Coffee – these guys spend more time DJing in Europe and in America than they are in South Africa.”

“Music in this country – like everything else – was segregated and it’s definitely not that anymore.” In fact, Goode says it’s like Mandela’s dream to see all the different cultures dancing to the beat of an urban sound. “Our music is not just being consumed locally, but it’s being gobbled up worldwide, which is fantastic.”

RUBBING SHOULDERS WITH GIANTS

Apart from rubbing shoulders with international giants like Rihanna and the likes, Goode is now flirting with the idea of working on some music with local talents like JSomething from Micasa.

Goode makes no secret of the fact that travelling with Rihanna was intense. They did seven concerts in seven days in seven different countries, including Washington DC, Mexico, Canada, Berlin, Paris, Stokholm, London and New York. “Essentially, we flew around the world in seven days. We’d land, get off, get shuttled to the show, watch her show, join an obscene party and then back on the plane where the party would carry on. It was insane. This went on for seven days. And somehow, I survived!”

JSomething represents what our country is, though. “He’s got the moves, he’s sexy, he’s cool, he’s funny, he’s slick… Also, holistically, he’s in the same place as me. He’s got kids, so he’s a dad. We have the most incredible conversations about things like how to better yourself as a man; how men actually need men… We should be proud to be men. There are some good men out there,” Goode says.

EXPLORING NEW AVENUES

While he’d like to collab with local talent like JSomething, Goode says he is also lucky to be on a bit of a roll following the recent radio awards. “It’s led to a really exciting, new venture… I will be taking over the Breakfast Show on Good Hope FM in Cape Town! It’s massive,” he says, “because there is a huge migration from the central parts

of the country down to the Western Cape and I’ve got a great opportunity to build a new audience and give them a really fun breakfast show.”

He’s especially excited about entertaining the kids in the car – something he never knew he’d be good at and have fun doing. They say if you can stand in front of a class of thirty primary school children and you can make them laugh hysterically, you should be in radio. “When you get the kids, you get the parents,” says Goode.

Essentially, his playlist for an Easter weekend road trip would entail all the anthems from Peppa Pig, songs from Ben and Holly and Cloudbabies. Baby Shark will definitely also make an appearance. “And, let’s go retro. ABBA, Mama Mia,” he says. He might also play the playlists of both SING movies and after experiencing his singing talents first-hand, we recommend you listen out for a bit of Aladin too! “All the songs that Robbin Williams sang in Aladin. That will melt them!” Goode adds.

We can’t help but wonder what the Easter Bunny would say about this playlist… Whomever the Easter Bunny is and however he evaluates behaviour, Goode says he will be happy with a packet of Hot Cross Buns for Easter. “The problem is,” he says, “if he’s been watching me, I’m gonna get nothing!”

FAMILY LIFE – THE WILDEST TRIP

When it comes to balancing work, life and family, Goode says: “It’s the most difficult, painful thing and I cannot get the hang of it. According to three-year-old Halo’s dad, there is no users’ manual. “There’s no textbook and I have no idea what I’m doing.” He adds, though, that his wife is from another galaxy. “If ever there was a Mary Poppins of moms, she’s that. I never thought I could ever meet somebody whom I can fall more in love with every single day that I am around her. I’ve got Peter Pan syndrome. I never thought I’d get married and settle down. I was a complete playboy; a wild child; insane. But you know what they say: You get governed. Sent someone who will straighten you out. I also never thought that a little girl could be so lucky to have Kyla as her mom.”

One of the biggest struggles he’s been having lately is wanting to be liked and loved by his daughter. “So, the problem is, I say yes to everything. I am her slave. I am struggling to be the angry headmaster with her. I am too nice, too soft, too sweet. She’s

completely got my number and she’s using it – like her mom does.”

Goode says that when a child comes into your world, it’s almost as if the universe is giving you a hiding. “You suddenly wake up to the reality that you’re actually responsible - entirely - for this little human being and your sphere of concern shrinks, rapidly.” He believes that every human being should go through that. “It really does straighten you out. Suddenly, you can’t be selfish. Even if you fight it, you can see it changes you. It changes your priorities, your perspectives, your concerns. It’s insane. Forget any narcotics; any kind of substance you can take to escape. That is the biggest, wildest trip you can possibly go on – having a kid.”

THE CHILD INSIDE

Having a child does not keep Roger Goode from having fun, though. “I still walk around and behave like an 18-year-old. I see everything from the point of view of an 18-year-old. So, for somebody like me, it’s a very difficult thing to try and force yourself to suddenly grow up and become serious.”

He still drops his daughter off at school and kicks the classroom door open, singing songs. He makes fun of the headmistress and dances with the teachers. “To the point where my daughter, Halo came to me one morning and said: ‘Hey, Daddy, just behave yourself today, okay?’”

HAPPIER IN SOBRIETY

Goode has been sober for four years. “It’s not a big deal. I treat it like I just decided one day not to have sugar in my coffee anymore. It happened when my little girl, Halo, was born. I decided it was time for a new chapter. I had fun; had a good run, being a DJ, and all the crazy things I did going down the rabbit hole… I cannot stress this enough to people. Just try it for three months and see if you can get it to six months and the next thing, you’ve done a year. The best sell I can give you is you won’t recognise yourself. Your anxiety will disappear, you will be able to tolerate stress, you won’t get worked up, you’ll be a happier person; a healthier person.”

If you’re in the Western Cape or travelling down to the Cape, tune in on Good Hope FM between 06:00 and 09:00 to hear what Roger Goode is getting up to. “If you don’t leave that show laughing at something, we can’t be friends anymore,” he jokes. H

TURN UP THE

TIK TOK

The South African music icon, Anton Goosen – also known as the country’s very own Liedjieboer – has recently announced the launch of his new single, TIK TOK. It forms part of his latest album, Sirkels. The poignant ballad tells the story of Klasie Frik van Staden, a man who spent 40 years working alone at a railway station near Pampoenkraal in the Karoo. The song reflects themes of time, loneliness and the subtle melancholy that defines Klasie’s existence, serving as a metaphor for a broader human experience. The song is available on all major streaming platforms, with the official lyric video available on YouTube. With Goosen’s career spanning nearly 50 years and him being one of the country’s best storytellers in the music industry, TIK TOK is most definitely worth a listen.

RESCUE ME

The acclaimed local musician and songwriter, Josh Klynsmith’s debut solo single, Rescue Me, marks a new chapter for the artist who has built a strong reputation as the drummer for Gangs of Ballet and through recent performances with Matthew Mole. Now, he is embracing a new direction, stepping forward as solo artist, songwriter and producer. Rescue Me is a personal track that has been years in the making. “This song is a personal one for me,” Josh says. “I wrote the verses a couple of years ago while I was living in Sri Lanka, but I struggled to find the right chorus. Later, after moving back to South Africa, the chorus finally came to me – of all places, in the shower! So, I love that this song is written from two very different stages in my life.” The song is available through Tic Tac Bang.

BALLERINAS & BALLERINOS

EN POINTE WITH SOUTH AFRICA’S PRINCIPAL DANCERS

For International Dance Day - coming up on 29 April 2025 - we celebrate the individuals who give us their blood, sweat and tears whilst appearing flawless on stage. We talked to Cape Town City Ballet’s principal dancer, Hannah Ward; Joburg Ballet’s principal dancers, Revil Yon and Tammy Higgins; and Mzansi Ballet’s Prima Ballerina, Angela Revie...

HANNAH WARD

A FREEDOM NEVER FELT BEFORE

Ward says that it is “the challenge, the storytelling, and the way that movement expresses what words can not,” that made ballet a deeply fulfilling art form for her from the start. “The few moments I had on stage, with the audience in blackout light, almost felt like an escape - a kind of freedom I hadn’t felt before.”

For her, ballet is about “discovering what the human body is truly capable of and the never-ending pursuit of refinement.” According to the dancer, it is a pure and timeless art form that carries an air of grace and elegance, but “also has this incredible ability to move your soul.” Ward says whether in its most classical form, or pushing the boundaries in modern works, ballet is all about the connection between the artist, the audience and the music.

But, is ballet a sport? Read more online.

ANGELA REVIE IN IT FOR LIFE

The first time Revie heard the opening notes of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, her heart was stolen and she never looked back. When she was younger, Revie was asked to choose between ballet and contemporary, but she just couldn’t bring herself to sacrifice either. In her mind, “classical ballet keeps the history alive, while modern ballet allows for creativity and expression, blending tradition with innovation.”

During her career, she has danced on stage in South Africa and abroad. Today, Revie is a teacher and choreographer. “It has given me the opportunity to live in this world I love even longer,” she says, adding that passing on the knowledge she has learnt and creating new ballets and stage works "gives me just as much joy as being on stage, if not more."

TAMMY HIGGINS ALL IT TAKES IS DEDICATION

Higgins is in her 20th year as a professional ballerina. After spending 12 years with the Hungarian National Ballet and Croatian National Ballet, she returned to Joburg Ballet, where her journey started at the young age of 18. “Ballet, and dance in general, is everything to me,” she says. “It is not merely a job, but a way of life... Many sacrifices have to be made in order to become a ballerina; through blood, sweat and tears.”

She says to make it in the ballet world, you must strive to better yourself and your technique daily. “To maintain it, you have to work extremely hard,” she adds, as there is always more you can do and achieve.

Whether for enjoyment or as a career, “ballet teaches you discipline, passion, dedication and more; you need a thick skin and a sense of humour,” Higgins concludes.

REVIL YON

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC

“It should always be about the music for me,” says Revil Yon when asked about what inspires him in his profession. “Our bodies are our instruments,” he says. “Every day we can find new ways to explore music through the use of our bodies without the use of words.” According to Yon, the fact that he gets to be someone different every day and explore what his limitations are as a human being, is something only few people ever get to experience. “I am very grateful and honoured to be able to live it daily,” he emphasises.

Yon believes ballet is a luxury in today’s world. However, in his mind, it contributes to the “escapism of life.” With every performance, he hopes to make people feel hopeful; give them a sense of freedom.

In a world where you can be anything, professional ballet dancers choose to be both athletes and artists and we can merely take our hats off to them for their unwavering dedication. H

THE PERFECT PAIRINGS

#HelloLifestyle

Celebrate mom this Mother’s Day with a specially curated gathering filled with all the things she loves. Is your mom one for sharing? Why not give her a harvest brunch paired with Mimosas? Perhaps she’s an artist at heart. Then, treat her to an intimate arvo of sipping and painting. Or, if she’s one for fun and laughter, bring out the family games and have yourselves a fabulous family feast paired with Perlé.

MOTHER OF THE B(R)UNCH

Brunch is synonymous with Mimosas and it feels like Mimosas should be synonymous with mom. So, plan a harvest table filled with all your mama’s favourites and pair it with the queen of brunch cocktails. According to inspiredtaste.net, the perfect ratio for a Mimosa is equal parts bubbly and citrus juice. We prefer fresh orange juice, as it adds to the delicate nature of the drink, and Brut Champagne or Cap Classique. Of course, nothing is stopping you from enjoying the bubbly on its own!

SIP & PAINT WITH MOM

Whether you host it at your home, at an intimate restaurant or at your parents’ house, invite mom to sit back, enjoy a glass of art-inspired wine and put paintbrush to canvas. Join her in creating memories and paintings that will tell stories for years to come. It is true, though, that creativity often only comes once the wine is flowing, so be sure to bring a couple of special bottles to enjoy as you create.

BOUQUETS & WINE

Be creative and put together a custom bouquet for mom with a special message and a wine that pairs with it perfectly. Whether your mom is typically classic or colourful, sentimental or sun-loving, you’ll soon find that there’s a special wine for every mom. For the classic mom, gift her with a bunch of roses and a bottle of Nuy Winery’s recently launched Moscato Perlé. The colourful mom would appreciate a rainbow bouquet filled with various different flowers and textures. Pair this with Pink Valley’s popular Rosé. Or, if your mom is the bravest of the bunch, spoil her with a bouquet of eucalyptus and florals and raise the bar with a bottle of Bon Courage’s limited release Inkará Cabernet Sauvignon 2019.

A FOODIE HAVEN AT THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL, THE WESTCLIFF

We recently visited The Four Seasons Hotel, The Westcliff, for 'Afternoon Tea' at The View, extending the experience with dinner at Flames. Arriving just as the clock struck twelve and leaving way after the sun had set, it was a sunny afternoon and starry evening filled with culinary mastery and memorable moments, for sure.

A ROYAL AFFAIR

The sun had reached its peak spot in the sky when we were led up the stairs to The Four Seasons’ The View restaurant. After being handed lemon-soaked towels to freshen up, we were treated to a welcome drink of homemade iced tea infused with mint leaves. Two-to-three-seater tables adorned the terrace overlooking the entirety of Joburg, with Sandton’s skyscrapers standing tall to the left whilst the central business district impressively danced in the midday light to our right. There we were, pondering how the City of Gold still had so many trees blooming with life.

Our host, Mbongeni Mahlangu was a delight, ensuring our experience was fit for royalty. Our champagne flutes were filled with Rosé Methode Cap Classique as we browsed the vast tea collection. We opted for The Four Seasons Speciality Blend and a Strawberry Rooibos creation. Glass teapots, heated from a tea light candle, were brought to the table and soon enough we were brewing tea leaves. In the meantime, we indulged in mouthwatering, homemade scones with jam and Chantilly cream.

Some savoury delights followed. The talented Chef Boity brought out her gourmet salmon arancini, egg and gherkin finger sandwiches, beetroot tartlets, phyllo pastry creations, bruschetta topped with cream cheese and sliced potato balls, to name a few. We each had our own to try, and whilst small in size, it was a filling course.

Finally, a variety of sweet treats came round. The cake stand was filled with berry and custard tarts, chocolate logs, pistachio mousse on biscuit bases, red velvet and

#HelloJoburg by Victoria Hill Images: Victoria Hill

strawberry cakes and generous slices of cinnamon milk tart.

As the afternoon wound down, we finished off our tea and bid the serene ambiance farewell.

FLAMBOYANCE AT FLAMES

Our day wasn’t over yet, with dinner under the stars awaiting at Flames. It was a warm summer’s evening, so we opted for the outside seating area even though inside was just as vibrant. With a view into the flameinspired kitchen to our left and the sound of cocktails being shaken to our right, the culinary paradise had us anticipating an evening of delightful flavours.

With a glass of Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc each, we kicked off the second part of our Westcliff experience. Paired with Crispy Patagonia Squid for starters, it instantly set the scene for a magical evening under the stars. The seafood starter was garnished with greens and bonito flakes, drizzled with

charred lime dressing and miso mayonnaise. When we asked for a recommendation on the main course, we were steered towards the Flames Braai section on the menu. The Wagyu Beef is the flagship dish at Flames, sourced from the Silent Valley Farm in the Free State. With a rich umami flavour, it comes with the guarantee of perfect marbling, with a score of 8/9. We had the Beef Fillet and Ribeye Wagyu with hand cut fries, completed with a Mushroom Velouté on the side. The dish did not disappoint.

With no room for dessert, we opted for Americanos instead, secretly eying the Lemon and Lime Cheesecake or the Almond Panna Cotta for next time.

Looking out over the city of Johannesburg, these two dining destinations afforded us a moment in time to truly appreciate the good things in life: great company, delicious cuisine and spectacular scenery. We most certainly left with full stomachs and bursting hearts. H

HOW RING HELPS TRAVELLERS

MONITOR THEIR HOMES WHILE AWAY

One of South Africa’s peak holiday seasons is currently underway, with holidaymakers wanting to take full advantage of school and public holidays from March to May. However, travellers often worry about leaving their primary residences unattended. This is where Ring devices come to the rescue, allowing you to relax on your travels while keeping an eye on your home.

Ring offers a wide range of easy-toinstall, DIY home security devices, including security cameras, video doorbells and alarm. These smart products are activated and monitored on your mobile phone through the Ring App. Ring security devices boast advanced features, including LiveView, Two-Way Talk, Night Vision and motion-activated alerts.

Ring cameras give travelling South Africans peace of mind, allowing them to check in on the things most important to them from wherever they are. You can effortlessly tap into the live feed video on your phone to check on the security of your property and the well-being of your pets.

An indoor camera is extremely practical in doorways, entrances or open-plan areas for enhanced security and checking in on fur children. Ring’s Indoor Cam 2nd Gen is small and compact enough to be placed anywhere in the home. It comes in a range of colours (white, black, starlight or blush) to seamlessly match your interior décor. Takealot is currently running a significant promotion on the Starlight device for only R549, which consumers can take advantage of before they head off on holiday.

Additionally, for indoor use, their PanTilt Indoor Camera allows users to ‘look around’ using the Ring App, which activates the camera’s motorised pan-tilt base. As its name suggests, the camera tilts up or down and can pan left or right to provide a full view of the surroundings, with no blind spots.

Ring offers more than just surveillance; it offers communication. With its Two-Way Talk feature, owners can interact with their pets from anywhere in the world - be it a reassuring word or gentle command. This is also a great functionality of the Video Doorbell, allowing you to see and speak to anyone making a delivery while you are away.

Outdoor cameras are a great deterrent and Ring cameras allow you to be proactive if you see something of concern. Products like the next generation Spotlight Cam feature wideangle 1080p HD video and a security siren. Users set up notifications on their phone for when motion is detected and can then sound the security siren remotely if something looks suspicious on their property.

Ring’s Motion Alerts will ensure you know if someone enters your garden, if there is movement around your car or if your dog attempts to make a great escape. And, their Night Vision technology will ensure you see everything in crystal clear detail - even after dark.

The intuitive mobile app allows you to monitor your home, receive instant alerts and act, all with just a few taps on your smartphone. With Ring’s innovative range of security cameras, video doorbells and alarm systems, you’ll never be out of touch with what’s happening at home this holiday season.

Ring keeps people closer to what’s important. H

SEEBAMBOES

Surf & Turf’s Bad Rap Restored

Harrington Street’s got yet another dining destination for foodies to feast at – this time, it’s an intimate, bookings-only space on the mezzanine level above Galjoen Restaurant.

With a wealth of experience and creativity, Chef-Owners Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart - who shot to fame with the launch of Belly of the Beast and later Galjoen - and Chef Adél Hughes and artist, Liebet Jooste are pushing boundaries in Cape Town’s culinary scene. With a range of dishes and a number of offbeat wines by the glass, you’ll struggle to find a similar standard elsewhere. Of course, the almost secret location of the eatery adds to its charm and with simple, yet incredibly thoughtful interiors, you’re in for a real treat.

At the entrance of Seebamboes, an artful collection of ceramics, filled with oceanic finds – from seaweed and mussel shells to dried kelp and pieces of crayfish – set the scene. The open kitchen, which spreads from the entrance all the way through to the other side of the eatery, promises a theatrical dining experience of note. Stunning glassware hangs overhead and wave-like splash panels, engrained with beach sand

and foam-like textures, serve as subtle dividers between chefs and diners, while still allowing for an interactive experience.

With a glass of Just My Luck bubbly in hand, we curiously walked through the brand-new space. It’s small and intimate, with a maximum of sixteen seats and it’s clear that every detail was carefully thought through. The tabletops resemble the sea with contours and colours of incoming waves and pretty pebbles. Ceramic light fittings hang from the ceiling – a genius combination of imperfect shapes and unpredictable light that create the illusion of an under-the-sea kelp forest. Even the knives are handmade with sea bamboo embedded in its handles. The cutlery is perfectly placed on reindeer horn, naturally shed and collected from the Eastern Cape. And, every now and then you’ll spot an ocean-inspired doodle – whether it’s on a black panel above the kitchen’s counter tops or at the back of the menu. This is Liebet’s way of telling Seebamboes’ stories through art.

Lunch kicked off with a starter snack of Klipkombers chips and Worcestershire marinated oysters topped with pineapple chutney. That was merely the beginning of a nostalgic journey, exploring Chef Adél Hughes’ elevated take on Surf & Turf. What followed was a Snoek pâté, biltong powder, braaied grapes and spekboom, served with brown bread crisps. Then, plates with Cape Point octopus, fermented tomato and Nduja flatbread made the rounds, complemented by the most delicious seaweed chimichurri. One of our favourites, though, was the divein-bowl. This dish consisted of aged Franky Fenner rump, served with Seebamboes, seaweed and exotic mushrooms in a Betty’s Bay dashi. Served with chopsticks, it allowed us to explore turf flavours with the etiquette of pescatarians.

Served with the impressive, handmade knives, another red meat dish came past. This time, it was Swellendam lamb in a sardine garum marinade – another surprising Surf & Turf combination. This dish was served with tomato carpaccio and dune spinach, which rounded it off perfectly.

The palate cleanser for the day was a Watermelon Popsicle, topped with

#HelloCapeTown by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Renate Engelbrecht; Claire Gunn

suurskuimpies. For many, the flavours were similar to that of a watermelon and feta salad.

Blesbok loin, steamed mussels and curry chowder sauce, coupled with cabbage steamed in a Seebamboes stipe, raised the standards even further, reminding us of both the bush and the sea at the same time.

Finally, an Ice Cream Sandwich served as the grand finale. The ice cream filled choc chip cookie, dipped in caramel crunch and dusted with sea lettuce, made for the most unexpected, yet exquisite flavour profile. Not too sweet, but sweet enough, this dessert not only brought about the nostalgia of ice cream on the beach, but it also reminded us of the incredible talent in South Africa’s kitchens.

Seebamboes is a must for anyone who wants to experience the true tastes of the most Southern side of Africa. It brings together the being of our people and the brilliance of our produce, all on one plate. H

LIBERTINO

Libertino is a new restaurant in de Waterkant that describes itself as "the wild side of Italian dining”. Here, handmade pasta and Neapolitan pizzas meet disco vibes. They roll every strand of pasta by hand, they stretch their pizza dough from scratch, and they even make many of their cheeses in-house. That said, the menu is anything but predictable, with bold, creative flavours that come with a twist. According to them, they don’t do boring and they definitely don’t do preservatives. Their décor seems to reflect their quirky and unconventional spirit with signature leopard graphics, zebra print chairs and a neon sign that reads “Feed me pizza and tell me I’m pretty”.

POOL PARTY CAPE TOWN

Pool Party Cape Town is a monthly social gathering that brings awareness to tidal pools. These events take place at one of the city’s 21 different tidal pools each month, and the best part is that they are free for anyone who wants to bring their floatie and participate. Tidal pools make for some of the most ideal swimming spots in town, giving you access to the best of both worlds: the safety of their sheltered walls and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the ocean. Drone images captured at these gatherings are sold to raise funds for teaching kids about water safety and the joy of swimming. So, grab a lilo (ideally shaped like a cat, unicorn or pineapple) or even just a pool noodle, and experience the invigorating chill of the Atlantic Ocean while doing some good and also reconnecting with people and nature.

MODERN TAILORS

gently placed in another country. Where the cuisine was concerned, this surely was the case. Chef Jessica and her team have created a menu that entices the curious and the ravenous, bringing the flavours of India to the heart of Pretoria.

Colours of gold, emerald and deep terracotta made for a royal Indian affair, with tasseled light fittings, draped fabrics and leafy wallpaper making even the ceilings come alive. In the middle of the restaurant, the bar is an impressive focal point. With small bar tables attached to it and stylish bar stools that call for that must-have Instagram photo, it’s all part of the great fanfare of the colourful Indian culture.

For a first-time visitor who is not familiar with Indian cuisine, the menu might be a little overwhelming. Yet, the stewards that roam are all very keen to explain certain dishes and to make recommendations. For starters, we paired our bubbly - our glasses filled to the brim - with some small plates (which, come to think of it, were actually not so small). The crispy Pani Puri - five traditional street food pockets stuffed and topped with sev (a coriander and mint ‘Pani’ infusion) served as the perfect introduction to the Indian way of dining. We also had the Papri Chaat - probably now one of our favourite dishes to date. This crispy popadum can also serve as the perfect light lunch, packed with fresh flavours of pineapple, roasted pumpkin, coriander, mint, pomegranate, mixed nuts, chevda and puffed rice, drizzled with yoghurt, green chutney and tamarind and date chutney.

From the packed parking lot where the famous Groenkloof Spar is located, we stepped into a world of wonder as we climbed the wooden stairs to the first floor. Beautiful, colourful lights hung overhead, with Indian-inspired interiors drawing us in. With large windows looking out over the Groenkloof neighbourhood, it was as if we’d been lifted out of reality and

For mains, we relished the pistachio korma with sliced lamb shank and the chicken makhani. Both these dishes are perfect for those just getting into Indian cuisine. The pistachio korma came with a mild and luxurious creamy sauce, combining yoghurt, cream, cashews and pistachio infused with ginger, garlic and spices. The chicken makhani is Modern Tailors’ famous butter chicken, served in a mildly spiced cashew butter cream and yoghurt sauce.

Dessert came in the form of carrot halwa, spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, ghee and cream, topped with Modern Tailors’ roasted cashew and raisin ice cream. Their Mango Tango consisted of sago, mango, pineapple, pistachio dust and pomegranate rubies.

Our taste buds did the happy dance as we balanced spices with fruit. Modern Tailors Ambassador sure knows how to impress the palate. H

LUPA OSTERIA

A WESTVILLE FAVOURITE

#HelloDurban by Tessa Buhrmann Images: Tessa Buhrmann

What do you get when you mix a favourite neighbourhood hangout with an authentic Italian restaurant? Lupa Osteria in suburban Westville.

Named after the legendary Roman she-wolf who nurtured Romulus and Remus - the twin sons of Mars, abandoned on the orders of their cruel great-uncle, Amulius and rescued from the Tiber River - Lupa offers a warm and welcoming space, whether you’re enjoying a casual family dinner, entertaining corporate clients, or grabbing a pizza and craft beer at the bar. Here, the pasta is homemade, and the pizza is wood-fired, and both are made with imported Italian flour. Ingredients are carefully sourced, prioritising local suppliers, with organic free-range chicken and top-quality veal - just as you’d expect from nonna’s kitchen.

Founded in 2013 by Guy Cluver and head chef Chris Black, Lupa was inspired by a European holiday where Guy watched a bustling pizzeria rolling out pasta on the pavement. More than a decade later, Lupa Westvillethe first successful franchise - has become a firm family favourite. In fact, we’ve toasted birthdays, celebrated graduations and ordered their pizzas more times than we can count.

Owner, Leon Roux suggested we start with a selection of antipasti: crispy arancini (deep-fried risotto balls served on a bed of arrabbiata sauce), pretzel-dusted calamari with mustard mayo, Italian cigars, crispy pastry parcels filled with Parma ham, robiola cheese, three-cheese Italian nachos with a touch of chilli, and rich chicken livers in a creamy sauce with sliced chorizo. Delicious and packed with flavour!

For the main course, Lupa’s primo piatto boasts Italian classics, from traditional Bolognese to creamy Alfredo and Gnocchi Gorgonzola. But, our absolute favourite is their famous signature pasta - a dish as much about theatre as taste. At our table, fresh fettuccine with truffled mushrooms was added to a flaming Italian Parmesan wheel, mixed to creamy perfection, and topped with

The dolce menu has something for everyone. Smooth gelato, classic tiramisu... our final choice was the Cremino al Cioccolato, though. A decadent creation of dark chocolate, double toffee gelato and scorched Italian meringue. The trick? Get a bit of

each layer in every spoonful. Perfection!

Ultimately, Lupa is a gathering place for good food, great company and memorable celebrations. Don’t just take our word for itdiscover Lupa for yourself. H 1 lupa.co.za

as the weather was perfect, but the indoor seating seemed just as inviting with numerous intimate tables, as well as a beautiful private tasting area with a collection of Pierneef lino prints on the wall.

The wine tasting had us swirling and sipping, identifying special characteristics in each wine with the guidance of Laurence, our informed wine steward. Miniature ‘mosbolletjies’ - baked at La Motte’s bakery - served as palate cleanser and a welcome mid-morning snack.

DID YOU KNOW?

La Motte has a wine range dubbed the Pierneef Collection with bottles on which you’ll find some of the famous artist’s works.

Following the wine tasting, we found ourselves browsing the Farm Shop, designed in such a way that it allows natural light to accentuate the unique products that speak to impeccable craftsmanship. From beautiful leather wine holders and Pierneef-printed tea towels to lightweight furniture by Pedersen + Lennard and stunning, handwoven acornshaped baskets, this is where you’ll most certainly find the perfect souvenir to take home with you.

LA MOTTE

WHERE YESTERYEAR’S KNOWLEDGE INFORMS THE NOW

La Motte brings life to a standstill. Here, travelling back in time awards you with glimpses of the future, with creativity and innovation at the forefront of everything they put their minds to.

With the day ahead of us, we strolled along the pathways, often halting to appreciate the sculptures that are scattered around the gardens. Many of the sculptures – often maternal in nature – were created by the father-son duo, Theo and Toby Megaw. One of the most iconic sculptures is probably the ‘Wine Bearer’ at the entrance, welcoming guests into the magical world that is La Motte.

Our first stop was the Tasting Room, located above a beautiful, lily-strewn pond, overlooking the recently reimagined La Motte yard. We chose a table outside

Lunch was served at L’Ami Bistro. As we were guided to our table, we could not help but stand in awe of the magnificence of the oak trees under which the bistro is based. A little squirrel came scurrying past as two women sat sipping wine at a long picnic table that has been custom-made to fit around an old oak. The bread course was served with a deliciously fresh parsley butter, followed by oysters and later rainbow trout, ethically sourced from a trout farm in Franschhoek. L’Ami’s claim to fame is that they serve farm food rather than fancy food and we could taste the essence of farm cuisine in every bite.

We ended off a day well spent at La Motte’s ever-evolving Ateljee, sipping on a glass of white wine while tapping into our inner artist and painting our own canvases.

A day at La Motte is never enough. Next time, we’ll arrive early and start at The Bakery. Then, we’ll head into the mountains in search of the re-introduced Blushing Brides on the La Motte Hiking Trail. H 1 la-motte.com Q @lamottewine

SIX UNMISSABLE MUSIC AND LIFESTYLE FESTIVALS IN SA

There’s something about hitting the open road - music blaring through the speakers - and the anticipation of a festival adventure ahead. South Africa is home to some of the most unforgettable music and lifestyle festivals, each offering a unique experience in diverse landscapes. From lush riverbanks and rolling green hills to stark desert plains and hidden retreats, these six festivals provide the perfect excuse to plan the ultimate road trip.

SPLASHY

FEN THE HEART OF THE DRAKENSBERG

A pilgrimage for music lovers and nature enthusiasts alike, Splashy Fen is South Africa’s longest-running music festival and a firm favourite among families and free spirits. Set in the foothills of the Drakensberg, the festival blends live music, arts and a scenic backdrop that feels like a dream.

At Splasy Fen, festivalgoers pitch their tents along the riverbanks, taking in an eclectic line-up while cooling off in the refreshing waters. Days are spent lounging in the sun, while nights come alive with a mix of indie, folk, rock and electronic beats.

AFRIKABURN

THE DESERT’S WILD SOUL

Deep in the Tankwa Karoo, AfrikaBurn is a portal to another world - one built on radical self-expression, art and community. Modelled after Nevada’s famous Burning Man, the event is less of a festival and more of a temporary city rising from the dust. The drive itself is an adventure, with a seemingly endless stretch of arid land leading to an explosion of creativity. Giant sculptures, mutant vehicles and themed camps turn the landscape into a surreal dreamscape, where the only currency is gifting, and the experience is one of total immersion.

UP THE CREEK RIVERSIDE RHYTHMS AND GOOD TIMES

For those who believe that music is best enjoyed with their feet in the water and a drink in hand, Up The Creek is paradise. Nestled along the banks of the Breede River in the Western Cape, the festival is an intimate gathering of music lovers, where the main stage is literally on the water. Attendees spend their days floating on lilos, soaking up the sun while acoustic and rock bands play into the evening. It’s a weekend of relaxed vibes, refreshing swims and unforgettable performances.

Picture a tranquil escape with rolling green lawns, pristine lakes and an intimate crowd revelling in a diverse selection of live music. This three-day experience is all about connection - whether it’s with the music, the environment or fellow festivalgoers. With swimming pools, hidden caves and a relaxed energy, Mieliepop feels like its own little republic of bliss.

RETREAT YOURSELF A WELLNESS FESTIVAL WITH A TWIST

For those seeking something beyond the usual festival chaos, Retreat Yourself is an oasis of wellness, creativity and mindful experiences. This familyfriendly festival encourages attendees to unplug from the demands of daily life and reconnect with their inner selves. It’s a chance to reset, recharge and leave with a renewed sense of purpose.

The magic of these festivals isn’t just in the music, the art or the experiences - it’s also in the journey. A carefully planned road trip can take you from the misty mountains of the Drakensberg to the dust storms of the Tankwa Karoo, through river valleys and deep into the heart of South Africa’s most vibrant festival landscapes. Whether it’s an off-road adventure in a 4x4 or a slow, meandering road trip in a camper van, this is the kind of trip that stays with you long after the last song fades. H

FURNITURE & FASHION

How runway trends influence your home aesthetic

Furniture and fashion has been intertwined for centuries. Whether it’s through interesting lines, trendy fabrics or the PANTONE Colour of the Year, how you dress yourself and your home seem to always have something in common.

MAGUGU HOUSE X WEYLANDTS

A collaboration between Weylandts - an industry leader in all things décor and furniture - and the awardwinning designer, Thebe Magugu was recently unveiled. Launched at Magugu House in Dunkeld, Johannesburg, this groundbreaking collaboration marked a historic moment, bringing two powerhouses with a shared passion for authenticity and African design together. The result: a bespoke sofa and duffel bag, designed by Magugu and Weylandts.

A SUBTLE AESTHETIC STATEMENT

Like in fashion, Zorora’s recently launched Maru sofa is not only there to fill a space, but also to fit your life. In fact, this sofa follows wherever life takes you - whether it be indoors or outdoors. Its versatility is what makes it so fashionable, especially in a world where homes are designed for evolving lifestyles. Modular furniture is not just a trend anymore - it seems to be the future.

The Maru sofa is stain-resistant with machine-washable slipcovers available in various fabrics to suit your aesthetic. Its slipcovers come with robust, chunky, rust-proof zips, which makes swapping them effortless, allowing you to style your sofa the way you like.

In a world where fashion is often about simplicity and effortless style, The Maru fits in perfectly, proving that fashion and furniture will always find each other. This sofa makes a statement like any quiet luxury outfit would, fitting into home spaces perfectly and changing with you as your life and your style evolves. Like they say: “It’s not about where you sit, it’s about how you live.” H

Q @zororasofa 1 zororasofas.co.za

The sofa is a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship, blending Magugu’s unique aesthetic with Weylandt’s bold, authentic design. Heritage and history served as fabric inspiration, drawing from the unique designs of the Basotho blanket. Woven locally in Cape Town, a jacquard weave forms part of the design, as well as corn motifs and twin stitching - a nod to the fruitfulness and fertility that collaboration brings about.

Blurring the lines between fashion and interior design even further, a bespoke bag, designed by Magugu, was coupled with one of these bespoke sofas and put up for auction on the night of the launch. The pledgebased auction’s proceeds went towards funding the remainder of a promising student, Samual Mofokeng, from Anna Weylandt’s alma mater, Design Time: School of Interior Design’s tertiary education.

This was just the beginning of a lasting relationship between Weylandts and Magugu House. They aim to continue to elevate the art of craft and design, highlighting the universality of iconic design through thoughtful integration of space, textiles and shared ethos.

MONEY HACKS FOR MOMS

In a world where things seem to become more and more expensive by the minute, it’s easy to get upset. Especially when you’re a mom who just wants the best for her family. Here are some clever mommy money hacks from one mom to another, which should help lighten the load (or at least, the mood).

ONLINE GARAGE SALES

The phrase ‘every bit helps’ relives its meaning tenfold when it comes to mamas and money. Scary Mommy (scarymommy.com) agrees and says it really is about keeping calm and looking to small, consistent budget hacks that add up over time. Like garage sales, for one, or the more technologically savvy version: Facebook Marketplace. Here, you can not only sell items, but you can also buy a full wardrobe of name-brand clothes at a fraction of the price you would pay in stores.

LEVERAGING ON LEFTOVERS

A friend recently said they have weekly Tupperware evenings - a clean-out-your-fridge evening, where they empty all the containers in the fridge and make dinner from whichever leftovers there are. Whether you whip up a quiche from leftover veggies from the weekend’s braai, or whether you cut up the last two pork chops, add the half-cut green pepper and some rice noodles for your own version of Sweet and Sour Stir-fry, it’s your prerogative. The only rule here is that at the end of the day, the containers in the fridge must be empty and you mustn’t have spent any money on making dinner.

REMIND YOURSELF AND THE FAMILY TO REUSE

By reusing certain items, you can save a lot of money too. Paper towels - although we love them – are an item you can cut costs on. Replace them with napkins and cotton towels and see how far that gets you. Also, rather use washable and reusable plates instead of paper plates, and Tupperware containers for lunchboxes instead of Ziplocs and plastic sandwich bags that just get thrown away.

BE WISE, MAMA. WHO KNOWS, MAYBE ONE DAY YOUR KIDS WILL ALSO REMEMBER YOUR MONEY HACKS AS VIVIDLY AS THE EVERYGIRL REMEMBERS HER MOM’S ADVICE.

SKIP THE R50 PURCHASE

The Everygirl remembers one specific money hack her mom taught her: Skip the R50 purchase (or in her case, the $3 purchase). “Of course, she didn’t mean to put back an essential grocery or personal care item on the shelf if it only cost a few dollars. What she meant was to ignore the very small spending temptations that lurk around every corner,” she writes. Now, we can add to that and recommend going shopping without the kids in tow, as they often tempt you even further, asking you to buy this and that as you walk along the aisle. These small purchases add up fast. A cappuccino here, a candy bar there... Don’t let them tempt you!

There are probably numerous other mommy money hacks out there, but these will certainly put you on the right track. Be wise, mama. Who knows, maybe one day your kids will also remember your money hacks as vividly as The Everygirl remembers her mom’s advice. H
