For me, the months of April and May hold so much significance. They are months of change, but also months in which we are reminded of what really matters.

As the leaves change colour and the familiar summer breeze gets its bite that nudges us to pull out the winter blankets from storage, we naturally start preparing for the colder months ahead. I’d like to challenge you to be more mindful of how you utilise these transition months this year. Apart from preparing your home for winter with all kinds of trendy scatters and throws, remember to load up on some quality family time too. We’re headed for the year’s halfway mark, which means our emotional tanks might be running out soon. So, use April to spend quality time with family and friends who love you. Put away your cell phones and connect by playing board games (check out our H-List on page 8 and 9 for a fun option), preparing

delicious meals and dining together. Then, make May the month in which you show your appreciation for mothers all over the country, including your own.

Another mother to celebrate, is Mother Earth during World Earth Day on 22 April. We are also celebrating various other special days during April and May, including World Health Day, World Heritage Day, Freedom Day, Workers’ Day and Africa Day. It’s a lot to celebrate, but also a lot to be mindful about.

Hopefully this issue might inspire you to not only be mindful about the importance of family, but also the importance of heritage, our planet and our country.

May you and your family enjoy a blessed Easter.

Marciel

A go-getter

Hopkins

Many might know her as the presenter of the popular Afrikaans matchmaker series, Boer Soek ’n Vrou, but there is much more to Marciel Hopkins than playing Cupido. In fact, this go-getter has been reaching great heights with her career – from presenting, acting and empowering women through motivational talks, to modelling across the globe.

The Boer Soek ’n Vrou presenter grew up with her toes between grape skins and from a young age, she helped harvesting and pressing grapes and making wine. Her father, Charles Hopkins is a well-known winemaker in the Cape Winelands, and she says: “I drove around on the farm with my dad; I had to name all the cultivars.” Marciel grew up on the farm, Bellingham (which later became Graham Beck) and when she turned thirteen, they moved to Paarl after her father accepted the position of Cellar Master at De Grendel Wine Estate.

With the winelands in their blood, there has always been a focus on hospitality, celebration and entertainment in Marciel’s family. Especially over times like Easter. Excellent food must always be paired with the best wines and the excitement around planning and executing these special family events is evident.

One of the biggest things I learned from my parents was to be a good entertainer,” Marciel says. “You keep the glasses full, you make enough food; you know, that kind of thing.”

EASTER TIME IS FAMILY TIME

9 April marks Marciel and her husband, Handré Joubert’s first anniversary and while they celebrated their first Easter on their honeymoon in the South of France, they’re looking forward to spending this year’s Easter with their families. The couple met in Franskraal, where both their families have been vacationing for years. This year shouldn’t be much different, Marciel says. “We make it priority to be with family this time of the year.” The bonus is that their two families get along well and that they can celebrate Easter together as one big happy family.

A FAMILY OF THEIR OWN

Marciel and Handré are keeping their family small and manageable for now. They are the proud parents of two cats – Krummels and Koekie – and although she says they would love to have children, it won’t be soon.

“I think for three years I’ve worked really hard and made a lot of sacrifices in terms of being away from home. In total, I am away from home ten weeks of the year,” she says. She has just established herself as presenter and would like to use the platform to take on possible upcoming opportunities. “My theme for the year is availability brings opportunity – something I did not have in the past year.”

COURAGEOUS OPTIMISM

Today, it takes moral courage to be ever optimistic, yet Marciel is a self-proclaimed eternal optimist. She loves life and lives it to the full, sharing it with those around her and inspiring others to do the same.

with a glow that comes from within
I still want to make an impact on people's lives and empower and motivate women.

As a freelancer she generally runs about six different income streams at a time. This includes presenting, acting, hosting motivational talks, collaborating with brands for paid campaigns, modelling and more.

She recently finished filming the fifteenth season of Boer Soek ’n Vrou - her third season as presenter. In addition to that, she is also very passionate about her motivational talks, having done more than twenty across the country in the past year. This time of year is also modelling season in the Cape, which means there are constant castings and auditions, and somehow Marciel also finds the time to offer life coaching sessions in between.

Her ultimate dream, though, is to land a major acting role – preferably an English one. Still, she says she’s learned not to put too much hope in landing a specific role, as you often go for many auditions and rarely get the part. “I believe the right role will come at the right time,” she says. “It is often a timing thing – are you available and is it what they want?”

MARCIEL’S FAVOURITE TO-DOS AROUND THE CAPE:

For the best pizza (better than real Italian pizza, she claims), visit Bardelli’s Restaurant in Kenilworth.

For brunch, visit Four & Twenty in Wynberg. “The best cheesecake you’ll ever eat in your life.”

The best fine dining restaurant is undoubtedly Silvermist Wine Estate’s La Colombe in Constantia Nek.

about the skill development element in life coaching. “Where therapy works backwards to heal the pain, life coaching works forward. Where are you now, and where do you want to be?”

In a way, Marciel’s passions collided when she was cast as presenter for Boer Soek ’n Vrou “It’s in the entertainment industry, but I still need so much of the life coaching and psychology.”

LESSONS FROM THE FARM

Being the presenter of Boer Soek ’n Vrou can’t not change you. Marciel says it definitely had an impact on her lookout on life.

Cold water swimming at the Camps Bay tidal pool. A fun challenge for people visiting the Cape. The rule: You do it in winter too!

Up Cycles in Sea Point. Marciel and Handre enjoy doing this, riding from Sea Point to Camps Bay, renting cycles for the day, stopping where you want to for lunch or brunch.

Q @upcycles

De Grendel’s wines are of course also a must.

Q @degrendelwines

During the Covid-19 lockdown, Marciel and Handré exercised on their Cape Town cottage’s patio and shared some of the routines on social media. This snowballed into people wanting to see more, with fans finding her fitness routines downright inspirational. It resulted in her collaborating with a professional fitness trainer, and together they formulated a fitness programme in the form of an e-book, which people can download and use in the comfort of their own homes.

A GUIDE TO MARCIEL’S GLOW

Marciel always has a glow about her. Could

MINDFUL PLANNING TOWARD MEANINGFUL IMPACTS

In addition to her degree in drama, the multi-talented presenter and actress has an honours degree in psychology from the University of Stellenbosch. It was in her honours year that she also took the leap to enter Miss South Africa – a hectic, yet probably the most defining year of her career, she says. This eventually led to a very successful modelling career. With almost 100 000 followers on Instagram alone, Marciel has grown into an inspiring South African icon to many.

“I still want to make an impact on people’s lives and empower and motivate women,” Marciel says, which is why she also studied life coaching. She is particularly passionate

“I think the biggest impact was on how much insight and respect and appreciation I have for my own country.” Having been born and bred in the Western Cape, it was only with Miss South Africa and the opportunities it brought about that Marciel really started travelling between Cape Town and Johannesburg, and later internationally. “I probably saw ten international destinations before I really saw my own country,” she admits. But, Boer Soek ’n Vrou changed that in a matter of months, with Marciel having had to travel across various provincial borders to meet each season’s farmers. “I feel so blessed, because few people get to see our country in so much detail and depth…and width! It deepened my being. It widens one’s perspective about life, the country, people’s different circumstances.”

WOW! I FEEL GOOD…

Marciel’s fitness programme, Feel Good Fitness is another result of her positive outlook on life and general way of thinking. For her, exercise is much more than being skinny, losing weight or punishing yourself for indulging in delicious cuisine. She had a huge mind shift post Miss South Africa and now exercises merely because it makes her

it be the magic of an acclaimed skin medic, or does it run deeper? She confirms it’s both. Marciel has been with her skin medic, Günther Oliver for seven years and can’t stop singing his praises. In addition to her skin secrets, Marciel is also an optimist who always sees the glass half full. She has a conductor’s chair vision of life and says that if you dream, make a change, empower women and live out your individual dreams, an inner happiness abounds.

Still, she says happiness is a choice. “I am really happy in my work and in my personal life. But I think [happiness] is also something that you need to choose. It depends on how you look at life. It’s a perspective thing.”

MOMS BREAK THE FALL

Marciel’s mother certainly also had an impact on her view of life. There is no friendship like the friendship between a mother and her daughter and with Marciel and her mom, it’s no different. A mother is your first friend, becomes your best friend and stays your friend forever and Marciel says she and her mom are very good friends. “Because I wasn’t in res, she was my best friend. I told her everything … There has always been that confidant element … It’s a special relationship – mom and daughter.”

Her mother plays a very important supporting role in her life. When she decided to take part in Miss South Africa and no one really took her seriously, her mother was the one who helped her, supported her and motivated her. “I am very grateful to her.”

Even after getting married and turning 30 recently, her mom is still the person she phones first. “My husband was upset the other day. Someone drove into my car door and I phoned my mom before I phoned him,” she laughs. “She will break the fall, and then I will phone everyone else.”

WATCHING THE FUTURE UNFOLD

Marciel is excited about what her future holds, with many avenues and opportunities aligning themselves perfectly. She sees it as an exciting life journey. “Obviously one has a couple of things one hopes for and dreams about…” she says. “One must be open and ready for opportunities when they arise, because it usually comes quickly and then you need to be prepared.” H

CONSCIOUS SELF-CARE

Premium, eco-friendly, local beauty brands for those keen on a more conscious, sustainable self-care routine.

World Earth Day is coming up and while we believe every day should be Earth Day, the 22nd of April serves as a reminder that we should continuously strive to living more sustainably. One way to do that, is by using more eco-friendly beauty and wellness products. In the end, it is not only better for the environment, but also for our wellness and health.

Over the last couple of years, consumers have grown much more conscious about the impact the products they use have on both the environment and their overall wellbeing. This resulted in a significant increase in eco-friendly and sustainable beauty products on the local market, so much so that companies across the globe are taking notice of some of our locally produced beauty products.

TERRES D’AFRIQUE

Terres d'Afrique is proof that South African plant based beauty products can be top quality skincare and meet the demand for international markets. Their mission is to create science-based organic products to heal, protect and nourish your skin by harnessing the unique properties of African regenerative botanicals.

Attending the Indie Beauty Expo in New York in August 2019, Terres d’Afrique founder, Dr Stephan Helary realised how fascinated people are with Africa and what botanicals it has to offer. He says: “There aren’t many brands with a strong focus on African botanicals in the international market. That is why the Hong Kong-based company, Fairton saw something very unique in Terres d'Afrique’s positioning.” While Terres d'Afrique’s main focus has always been on spas and the hospitality industry, their positioning is slowly but surely moving into the luxury retail space, making their recent partnership with the Taiwanese shop, HeartH - where they are now being stockeda huge achievement.

“It is a great honour for a brand like Terres d’Afrique to be chosen by a company like Fairton to be part of their collection of brands offered in their newly launched store (HeartH) in Taiwan. Fairton has more than 25 years’ experience in the distribution of luxury fashion brands such as Max Mara, Marina Rinaldi, 7 for all Mankind and Sabon to name a few. We could not wish for a better partner to launch and distribute our brand in the Asian market. We look forward to the opening of three more stores this year,” says Helary.

There’s been a big push in the beauty industry for independent beauty brands to have a place in a market that is often dominated by the big beauty players. This is surely Terres d’Afrique’s time to shine internationally. Their products are ethically sourced and sustainably made, and they believe that our health is inseparable from the health of the earth.

BEAUT SERUMS

This contemporary South African skincare brand was consciously created to protect skin exposed to the unique, harsh South African climate. They make use of simple, purpose-driven formulations that contain only what is necessary. In addition to this, they also believe that we should all be kinder to ourselves, to each other and to the earth we live on. Beaut Serums promote that, as well as gentle skincare.

While their packaging is elegant, the quirky names and colourful branding easily catch the eye. Beaut’s products are mainly serum-driven and you can get anything from glow-inducing exfoliants (try their popular Power Potion) to revitalise and texturise your skin, to a plumping hydrator (Face Juice) that will quench and moisturise your skin.

It’s like they say: “It’s your face. It deserves the best skincare.” H

Q @beautserums

SKOON.

The name itself has a lot of meaning attached to it. In English, it means ‘clean’ and that’s exactly what the brand stands for – from a clean, healthy skin, to having an impact on keeping our earth clean. SKOON. is PETA-approved and is an ambassador of reusing, reducing and recycling. They also committed to donating 1% of their sales to the Baobab Foundation in South Africa.

Since we’re from Africa, doesn’t it make sense to use products that have been made from our continent? SKOON.’s products have been inspired by the beauty secrets of our ancestors, handed down from generation to generation. It’s some of the cleanest and kindest beauty brands you’ll find. Words like ‘non-toxic’ and ‘sustainable’ are part of their DNA, their thinking and their way of doing.

In the end, it runs much deeper than skin at SKOON. It’s about caring for your conscience (and ultimately the planet). Their products include ultra-powerful local actives like Rooibos, Honeybush, Buchu and Baobab – all known for its high concentration in antioxidants.

BIDDING FOR BEAUTY

Online art auctions are making beautiful local and international art more accessible.

#HelloLifestyle

Not all the lessons learned from lockdowns are harsh ones. They taught us that we need to take more time to beautify the spaces we live in and that we need to look at alternative investment vehicles in a market vulnerable to myriad pressures. The result, for many, was to turn to art to solve both problems – which saw online art auctions booming.

“Lockdown pushed everyone into the digital sphere and made bidding and buying artworks online the new norm and, as clients have successfully purchased artwork online and witnessed the benefits of being able to bid remotely, there has been more confidence amongst our clients in using it. I do believe this is the new future for auctions,” says Strauss & Co. specialist, Arisha Maharaj. “Strauss and Co. started online auctions in 2013 and the platform gradually gained traction, but there was an increase in interest in online auctions throughout and after the lockdown period. Lockdown also prompted us to take our live auctions to a virtual

platform which proved to be very successful and is a platform we have continued to use.”

Maharaj says that art is recognised as an asset and investment class in the financial world, but cautions that not all art is an investment.

“A work’s investment value depends on the artist and the artwork, so it’s essential to

always get professional advice if buying art for these purposes,” she says.

The technological influence on art auctions has allowed auction houses to increase the number that can be held, helping build the market for established artists and bringing the works of new artists to the secondary market. “Being able to host more auctions has allowed us the luxury of having more focused sales around specific artists and themes,” says Strauss & Co. Chairperson, Frank Kilbourn. “In 2016 Strauss & Co. had a total of ten auctions and in 2022 we have had a record total of 55 auctions, with 6 381 lots being sold at a value of R354 million.”

AUCTION APPRECIATION

Maharaj says that the art world can seem intimidating, but the option to view works online as part of an auction and do some research of your own is helping make art more accessible. “Online and live auction previews see all the works exhibited in a physical space before going under the hammer,” explains Maharaj. “These exhibitions are a great place for prospective buyers to familiarise themselves with what they like and compare different artists, periods and styles. The secondary art market has the luxury of offering hundreds of different artists with one auction, with a wide choice of mediums, categories, periods and prices.”

She says that there is no such thing as a ‘stupid question’ in the auction space, where

APRIL - MAY 2023 l hellolifestyle.co.za 14
Strauss & Co Managing Executive Bina Genovese conducting a live auction HOD & Senior Art Specialist Dr. Alastair Meredith

auction house employees are passionate about art and enjoy helping and educating prospective buyers and art lovers broaden their knowledge. “Our art specialists are always ready to answer your questions, make recommendations and guide you towards an artwork or collector's piece that will bring you joy. It's also a great idea to visit contemporary art galleries and chat with the curators and owners about upcoming artists making waves in the industry.”

DEBUNKING THE MYTH

There’s a perception that original art is prohibitively expensive, but Strauss & Co. has sold artworks on online-only auctions for similar prices to those at retail stores. “When you buy an artwork on auction at Strauss & Co. you know one of our art specialists has vetted the provenance, authenticity and value, and that it has proven its market price,” says Maharaj. “Blue-chip artists like William Kentridge, Walter Batiss and Robert Hodgins' art do sell for millions of rands on auction, but their works on paper offer a foot in the door for collectors determined to invest in one of these auction stalwarts, without

applying for a second mortgage on their homes.”

She explains that it’s relatively likely that buyers can pick up a good bargain at auction. “There are cases where a seller is eager to sell, so they can place a lower reserve on an artwork. The more seasoned and experienced buyers will be able to identify a bargain at auction. Art auctions can be daunting, especially when you are new to that world and investigating alternative assets to diversify your investment portfolio. Nevertheless, there is no reason to be intimidated, even if you can’t discern a Pierneef from a Portchie or a lithograph from a linocut. Art auctions are more accessible than ever.”

Live and online auctions are run by various auction houses all the time and Strauss & Co. will be hosting online auctions that run 3-10 April and 1-8 May, as well as a Virtual Live Sale in Johannesburg 14-16 May. Visit www. straussart.co.za for details. H

HOBBIES IN THE HOOD

A HOBBYIST WHOSE BAKING SPROUTS FROM BOOKS

Karla Janse van Vuuren has been baking with books as her inspiration since 2020 and here, she tells the story of how her hobbies of reading and baking collided, evidently also evoloving into a small business:

I can’t remember a time before I could read. It’s something that just came naturally to me. Something else that comes naturally is baking. I love combining simple things like flour, sugar and eggs and creating something mouthwatering.

In 2020 I decided to combine my two loves and I created The Bookworm Bakes, a blog where I do food and book pairings. This is like food and wine pairing – only better! It works like this: I read a book (I prefer novels by authors like Kate Morton, Lucinda Riley, Ken Follett, Lee Child and many others) and then I let the story inspire me to bake something that will pair perfectly with it.

Karla recently read The Language of Food – a beautiful novel by Annabel Abbs. The book tells the true story of one of the world’s

first food writers, Eliza Acton. In spite of not being a domestic goddess, she was commissioned in 1835 to write a cookery book. A young woman named Ann Kirby helped Acton create the first true cookbook called Modern Cookery for Private Families (1845).

The Language of Food is about food, but also about friendship and surviving life’s challenges. Acton spent some time in France, which evidently added flavour to her recipes. Karla paired the book with a fabulous French apple tart, made with fresh apple slices and homemade frangipane.

HL’S READING NOOK

BOOKS

THAT COME HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY BAKER AND BLOGGER, KARLA JANSE VAN VUUREN:

In addition to The Language of Food, another book that truly captivated bookworm and baker, Karla Janse van Vuuren is The Last Summer by Karen Swan. This is the first in a new series called Wild Isle, which will focus on five young women from the Scottish island of St. Kilda.

The story begins on the island in 1930 and follows Effie Gillies as she falls in love for the first time, leaves the only home she’s ever known (St. Kilda was evacuated on 29 August 1930) and deals with immense loss. Karla paired this book with a traditional scotch pie with a chicken filling. (The St. Kildans mainly survived by eating seabirds, but as puffin isn’t readily available on supermarket shelves, she used chicken instead).

The next book in the series, The Stolen Hours, will be published in July this year, and we can’t wait to read it! We can’t help but wonder what Karla will be pairing it with...

TASTE TRUE TERROIR WITH ORGANIC WINES

ORGANIC AND BIODYNAMIC WINES ARE HEALTHIER FOR US – AND THE PLANET. WHY IS IT THAT WE DON’T SEEK OUT MORE EARTH-FRIENDLY WINES?

#HelloLifestyle

While we often seek out organic vegetables or sustainably sourced household and personal products, deliberately searching out organic or biodynamic wine doesn’t seem to be much of a priority. Yet, there’s no reason for it not to be, because of all the reasons why we opt for the former.

ORGANIC VS BIODYNAMIC

Johan Reyneke, Owner and Viticulturalist at Reyneke Wines says while organic wines are environmentally sustainable, biodynamic wines strive to go beyond that and even become self-sufficient ecosystems. “All biodynamic wines are organic, but not all organic wines are biodynamic. Biodynamics is one of the oldest forms of organic agriculture. It comes from a time when our ancestors farmed with a spiritual understanding.”

In the organic winemaking process, no artificial fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides or fungicides are allowed in the production of the grapes, and the addition of additives in the cellar is restricted. Biodynamic farming uses no synthetic fertilisers or pesticides and works to achieve soil health using compost, animal and green manures, diverse crop rotations and the incorporation of livestock into the process.

Ladybird Vineyards’ winemaker, Francois van Zyl says that organic and biodynamic wines are healthier because there are fewer additions to the wine and the chemical footprint in the production of organic wines is smaller.

BOTTLED BETTER?

Why, then - apart from availability - are organic wines not as widely consumed as their counterparts? Van Zyl says that any well-made wine with great ageing potential can be a great wine, regardless of whether it was produced organically or by conventional winemaking. “Some of the best and most highly prized wines in the world are organic or biodynamic and are produced that way. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – the most expensive and highest prized wine in Burgundy is biodynamic and so are Chateau Palmer’s [wines].”

So, is organic better? “An organic certification for wine only advises the consumer of the farming and winemaking practices and isn’t a definition of quality,” says van Zyl. “You can get very good organic wines and also very good conventional wines. Poor quality wines produced in both methods are also possible.”

Reyneke says that the biggest misconception consumers have around organic and biodynamic wines is that they are inferior, don’t age as well and are overpriced. “Modern agriculture is one of the five biggest contributors to global warming and biodiversity loss. Organic, biodynamic and regenerative agriculture can play a significant role in slowing things down, or even reversing the process,” he says.

Raise a glass of organic or biodynamic wine then, and help save the planet!

LIBERTÉ FRENCH FOOD & WINE BRINGS FRENCH FLAIR TO THE NORTHERN SUBURBS

#HelloJoburg

Whether a global success story or a local hole-in-the-wall, any restaurant needs to be built on passion. The long hours, challenging economic climate and changing food trends demand that everyone involved work as hard as they possibly can to make the venture work.

There’s a vibe around Liberté French Food & Wine in Craighall Park’s ‘The Woods’ –formerly the Colony Centre – that suggests that it’s established itself as a neighbourhood go-to in three months’ time. One that’s going to grow into something bigger. The fact that owner Natasha Maciel has run a restaurant - Pronto Italian Restaurant - just across the car park for twenty years, shows that she knows plenty about building a supportive community. “As an independent owner and mother of two lovely boys, having the restaurants opposite each other in the same centre (yes, some people would think this is mad) was the only way I could open another restaurant that I could be at most days, while still being a good mom available to my boys,” she says.

The word Liberté is a feminine noun and Natasha professes to tailoring the décor and menu specifically. It’s not much of a stretch

then that the restaurant is an unashamedly feminine space. It’s stylish without being pretentious, and neat without being clinical, if not a little noisy once the enthusiastic crowd packs the dining space out. “I started with my ‘why’ when it came to setting up Liberté. I felt compelled to open a space that celebrated femininity, freedom and connection. From there, with my passion for French food, the rest just fell into place,” she says.

The menu is French-inspired rather than being traditional French haute cuisine or bistro fare. There are solid signature dishes like Moules Frite, Coq au Vin and Fillet Mignon which are all true to their roots, while the salads are more cosmopolitan and French Onion Chicken Meatballs deliver traditional flavours with a twist. Lighter options include an array of flaky puff pastry vol-au-vent and some inventive canapés. There’s also a breakfast menu with plenty of pastries produced on-site in the bakery, as well as crêpes and omelettes. The wine list is ready to go – but despite applying a year

ago, the now-dissolved Gauteng Liquor Board has yet to deliver a license. Corkage is an option, and it’s possible to order from Pronto’s extensive South African and Italian-laden list on a separate bill.

If that doesn’t convince you to make Liberté your new neighbourhood favourite – no matter which neighbourhood in Joburg you live in – then the achingly perfect Belgian Chocolate Fondant will. H

THE MANOR HOUS E AT SPIER

THE CAPE WINELANDS SERVES UP YET ANOTHER EXCITING DINING EXPERIENCE

Spier Wine Farm near Stellenbosch has seen many transformations since the Enthoven Family took ownership of the historic property in 1996. The latest is the opening of the revamped Manor House, which has been transformed into a “showcase of excellence and creativity” when it comes to food and wine, according to Chief Operations Officer, Annabelle Schreuders.

At its unveiling in February, the official media release quoted Mariota Enthoven when it declared: “The Manor House will be a space [for] conversations around food security and sustainability … We’re serving up a unique sense of place, using each meal we make as an opportunity to tell stories … about our regenerative farming, organically grown food garden, organic vineyards and carefully crafted wines.”

The typical Cape Dutch building with its neo-classical gable dated 1822, has served several purposes over the years. Now, upgraded spaces create new catering

opportunities. This includes the kitchen, which chef Phil Carmichael says was simply “a room with a table and two chairs.” Among the new additions are open and adjustable fire grills. “We use flame, smoke and embers to cook dishes. More than just a technique, fire is a key ingredient,” says Phil.

The first culinary events held at the revamped Spier Manor House was a series of five-course dinners in March, priced at R1 350 per person, including wine. A launch with classic, long-table setting preceded these events. First up was a simple but spectacular vinaigrette-splashed salad of heirloom tomatoes, nasturtium capers, a sorghum cracker, thin-sliced chorizo, and feta. On the side, a warm and perfect rye-based boule, fresh from the farm bakery.

This was followed by a chicken-and-leek terrine, green bean salad and garden herbs. Wines served were the Frans K Smit 2018 White Blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, and 21 Gables Chenin Blanc.

Mains comprised Beef Wellington with a bordelaise sauce made with Spier’s Creative Block 5 wine, accompanied by the big-hitting Bordeaux-style Frans K Smith Red Blend. Mashed potato and smoked bone marrow, as well as variety of other veggies were served on the side.

Annabel says that beyond catering, the Manor House can host small events such as poetry readings and masterclasses, which can be accommodated in smaller rooms depending on the requirements. Throughout, leading artists’ works are displayed, like Wim Botha’s dramatic flour-and-resin interpretation of Michelangelo’s Pietà sculpture.

Reflecting on the new venue - the first of several changes afoot at Spier – cellarmaster Johan Jordaan said: “The most romantic thing about agriculture is consuming its wares. The hard part is when it’s middle of the night and you’re trying to fix a problem. But this space is ultimately about leaving a better person than when you stepped in.”

GLORIOUS MOROCCAN DINING AMIDST GREEN AND GOLD

behind the latest location, and it’s evident in every detail – from the menu to the décor. They imported unique furniture pieces and the handmade ivory and green floor tiles, mosaic tabletops and ceramics make for a glorious dining experience.

Tashas Group’s Head Stylist, Nicky Greig made various collaborations come alive in the new space, with elements and expressions from local designers and artists. This was all done strictly along the theme of Le Jardin Majorelle – the famed botanical garden and artist’s landscape garden in the Moroccan city, Marrakech.

While the interior is sublime, it’s the food that makes the memories last. “As with all our cafés, each dish is made to order,” says Sasha Basson, one of the main brains in the restaurant group’s culinary team. As with all the other tashas locations, this one also features the Inspired Menu (with dishes specific to the particular tashas) and the Classic Menu (with dishes found at every other tashas too). The tashas Lynnwood Bridge Inspired Menu features light and bright dishes, reflective of brunching with friends in the garden and enjoying a table filled with decadent, fresh and healthy food.

Natasha Sideris’ tashas is a restaurant brand many have come to love, which is why we were very excited about its latest location. They’ve recently opened the third Pretoria-based restaurant, this time at the popular Lynnwood Bridge retail centre in Pretoria. Just off the N1, and with Lynnwood being an established area in Pretoria, there’s no doubt that this was the right spot for another tashas. The area connects neighbourhoods and corporate offices, making it the perfect weekday business lunch spot, or an eatery for chilled weekend breakfasts with family and friends.

The new tashas marks the successful restaurant group’s sixteenth South African store and comes with bold colours, beautiful detail and old favourites that will keep the nostalgia alive. Morocco was the inspiration

Dishes that stood out for us include the homemade breakfast flatbread – filled with cheese and topped with crispy bacon and a fried egg – as well as the pana cotta pot, served with caramelised banana, peanut butter maple yoghurt and salted peanut, sunflower seed and pumpkin seed brittle. In addition, they also do lovely salads, with the Burrata Panzanella Salad being a definite favourite. (You have got to taste its chewy tomatoes and the red wine vinaigrette!)

And, what is a Pretoria restaurant without a burger? It’s a fact that tashas Lynnwood Bridge’s burgers (and pastas) are bound to have people queuing. H

Based on the border of the Village’s buzz in Hazelwood, 23 on Hazelwood is the one place where quality of cuisine and good service never seems to dwindle. Their checkered black and white tiles, homy vibe and freshly baked pastries are enough to lure you in, and their coffee is sure to keep you there for much longer than anticipated. DINE LIKE A DURBANITE

unique foodie flavours have been widely adopted and incorporated into many South African dishes.

INDIAN CURRY

One thing you must know about Durbanites is that they have quite the varied appetite and often a very different palate to that of the rest of the land. For them, pineapples and masala go hand-inhand, and spicy prawns have never tasted as good as in Durbs.

While Durban’s cuisine includes some of South Africa’s fieriest curries, their Indian cuisine doesn’t consist of curries only. In fact, you’re bound to find a unique mix of South and North Indian dishes like breyanis and pilaus here, often blended with uniquely South African flavours.

Durban’s Indian cuisine originated with the South Indian indentured labourers’ arrival at the port of Natal. They were transported on 45-day steamship journeys between 1860 and 1911 and mainly came to work on the British-run sugar cane plantations, as well as in the railway, fishing and boating industries. Today, their cuisine, cooking techniques and

There’s a secret to cooking the perfect curry and in Durban you’ll find it. Apparently, the secret lies in the oil (good Durban curries will have a glossy oil slick at the top), fresh masala and how the onions and garlic are cooked.

Try Cane Cutters in Glenwood, where you can sample a variety of curries, snacks and breyanis. If you’re looking to have curry in an upper-class environment, The Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga also has some great curry options to try.

BUNNY CHOW

Bunny chow can be described as hollowedout quarters of white bread loaves, filled with curry. It’s typical Durban street food and you have not been to this coastal city if you have not had bunny chow.

Try Hollywood Bets in Springfield for some of the best bunny chow in town. Another local foodie favourite is The Oriental Restaurant at The Workshop.

FRESH SEAFOOD

Since Durban is based on the coast, it’s only

natural that it will have some of the best, freshest seafood to sample. Located on the Sardine Run route, this is also one of the best South African destinations to eat fresh Sardines between May and July. Find it at local fish markets or waterfront pubs and restaurants.

DARING DISHES FOR ADVENTUROUS PALATES

Durban is at the heart of the Zulu culture and evidently a taste of cultural cuisine is also a must. Traditional Zulu dishes include mogudu (tripe), amadumbi (Zulu potatoes), walkie-talkies (boiled chicken feet) and pap (maize porridge). H

MONWANA

STAYING AT MONWANA IS LIKE RUNNING INTO THE WARM, LOVING EMBRACE OF HOME AFTER BEING AWAY FOR TOO LONG. HERE, HUMBLE LUXURY TAKES SHAPE THROUGH GENTLE HOSPITALITY AND ELEGANT INTERIORS.

HOW TO GET THERE: A quick 55-minute flight from O.R Tambo International Airport to Hoedspruit Airport will get you there in no time. From Cape Town, the flight is two hours and 30 minutes. Monwana can arrange transport from the airport to the lodge and back, which normally takes about 45 minutes. You can also drive yourself. Thornybush Game Reserve is six hours’ drive from Joburg, three and a half hours from Nelspruit and 45 minutes from Hoedspruit.

#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied

It’s true that all the places we visit make of us who we are. We recently left our hearts at the luxurious Monwana ecolodge - located in the Greater Kruger - and we have since not been the same.

Based in Limpopo’s popular 14 500-hectare Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, Monwana has us pining to return. It is there where our idea of home has shifted, for the better. Monwana’s re-imagined safari experience comes highly recommended, especially if you’re looking to come home to a place where things are balanced; pure. A place of peace.

WELCOME HOME!

Upon arrival, the Monwana team’s welcoming waves had us – perfect strangers from the city – completely baffled. People normally only wave at family they haven’t seen in ages that way. It was only later that we realised once you set foot at Monwana, you become part of the family. “Welcome home!” general manager, Drienie said as we arrived from Hoedspruit Airport. There was a genuine excitement in her eyes, as if she were welcoming long lost friends.

calm way in which the rather full itinerary was communicated. Or, perhaps it was the instant laidback demeanour we all seemed to have adopted as we entered the lodge’s majestic doors.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS

Located in the Big 5 Greater Kruger with a dry riverbed in front of the lodge, the chance of seeing some impressive wildlife, is pretty much a given. Even when you don’t get to spot the Big 5, there are ample sightings that will make up for it. Sundowners with lone ellies, riverbed rides amidst thousands of fireflies and the trilling of toads, honey badgers breaking loose through bushveld grass only to disappear again – these are all once-in-a-lifetime experiences one could easily expect at Monwana. The game drives take place twice daily, often with a surprise safari stop, and the lodge’s safari team also offers guided bush walks for those keen on exploring the bush on foot.

HUMBLE LUXURY

The lodge is luxurious, alright, but in a whole new light. While the accommodation is magnificently luxurious, with everything

dressing room, a large bathroom which has access to the plunge pool from either the bath, shower or outdoor shower, and a lovely lounge walking out onto a covered terrace overlooking the bush. There is also a fully stocked mini bar, with an array of snacks – all included – to indulge in.

A brand-new spa has also been added to the lodge’s offering, which comes with a roof venue where guests will soon be able to experience private movie evenings, romantic dinners and more. The spa itself is encircled with glass windows, offering a spa experience complemented by natural light and perhaps even a light breeze. Much of the spa’s décor seems to have been inspired by nature and apothecary, bringing things full circle.

TASTING LUXURY

Of course, a significant part of the experience is Monwana’s food and wine experience. The food is excellent – from breakfasts, right through to light lunches and lavish, yet perfectly portioned dinners. In addition, Monwana has an impressive underground cellar (spot it through a glass window from the bar) with carefully curated wines. The owners - who are from the Netherlands - have grown very fond of South African wines over the years, with a special interest in Sémillon.

We were taken straight through to lunch under a Leadwood tree, adjacent to a lovely infinity pool overlooking the lodge’s active waterhole. Everything about the lodge’s entrance and its lounge areas spoke to that feeling of letting go. Breathe.

Monwana lodge has been around for many years, but it has recently been broken down and rebuilt into a luxury, sustainable eco-lodge that epitomises the pinnacle of bushveld elegance and an unprecedented love for nature, people and peace. If we could put the stay at Monwana into one word, it would be graceful. From the staff’s gentle way of welcoming and guiding their guests, to the

that you might need right at your fingertip, it’s not the glitz and glam that matters here. At Monwana, gold comes in the form of glorious, golden sunsets, glistening grass and genuinely gleaming smiles. It’s a lifestyle one easily wants to live up to – a humble, yet luxuriously comfortable stay with the bonus of submerging yourself in the sounds and sights of nature. Even from the comfort of the Suites, Savannah or Woodland Residences or the beautiful and exclusive private villa, you get to take it all in at your own pace.

The Suites, which we stayed in, are spacious and beautifully decorated, with a separate

At Monwana, you’ll rarely find that a meal is enjoyed at the same spot as the previous one, which elevates the experience even further!

A visit to Monwana is truly like coming home. Here, you get to slow down and appreciate the good things in life.

Home is often like two arms, holding you tight when you need it most. Similarly, Monwana brings you just that: A metaphoric embrace of love, luxury and the lushness of the bush. H

GLAMPING IN THE HEMEL-EN-AARDE VALLEY

Canvas Collective Africa’s Hemel-en-

#HelloLifestyle

We love sleeping in tents. It feels so much closer to nature. We’re not always that keen on struggling with tents and tentpoles though, which is why Canvas Collective Africa’s offering comes as a welcome camping - or rather, five-star glamping - solution.

Canvas Collective’s luxury glamping concept was born during the Covid-19 lockdown when Samara Stern and Dez Lundy met at the non-profit Ladles of Love feeding scheme. One could say philanthropy and innovation brought these two together, resulting in a glamping experience like no other.

During the pandemic, Dez had become a volunteer at Ladles of Love, which Sam’s family also supported. Dez’s charm and operational expertise brought in 48 tons of donated vegetables per week, feeding 50 000 people. At the same time, Sam’s event management experience helped her initiate a sandwich drive that made a world record of 320 000 sandwiches in one hour. Eventually, it took these two go-getters - who were clearly meant to meet - only a year to get the concept of a luxury tent experience off the ground.

LUXURIOUS TENT STAYS

Stepping into our canvas home for the evening left us speechless. It’s hard to imagine that so much luxury can be packed into a pop-up tent. All ten tents are stylishly furnished with everything - from a king-sized bed and Nespresso machine to a fan for hot days and electric blankets for cold evenings. Each tent also has its own flushable, portable toilet, as well as a shower with hot water.

We spent the first afternoon curled up on the armchairs outside our tent, sipping sparkling wine and taking in the serenity of

our surrounds. As the sun slowly lowered itself behind the Babylonstoren Mountains, we made our way to the communal campfire. The pathways between the tents were illuminated by small lanterns, giving the camp a romantic glow. After unwinding around the campfire (in the most comfortable safari loungers we’ve ever sat on) we were ushered to the Field Kitchen for dinner. P.S. Find Canvas Collective’s luxurious safari loungers at Decofurn.

THE FIELD KITCHEN

The Field Kitchen is an impressive mobile

glass, steel, and canvas restaurant that affords diners a breath-taking view of the valley below. In this full-on restaurant with its professional kitchen, chef Trudy prepares fine dining meals you would expect to indulge in at some of the best restaurants in South Africa. Using locally sourced ingredients, each dish is conscientiously created to curious glampers’ delight.

As we enjoyed a glass of local red wine, chef Trudie bustled about, weaving her magic into every meal from the open plan kitchen. The appetiser - Steak Teriyaki with a plum salsa - might have left us wanting more, but the highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the main. Served on a bright carrot puree, the seared line fish with a velouté was simply scrumptious. And, just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, chef Trudie treated us to Banana Rum Baba for dessert!

Feeling very content, we followed our host, Eldine to the campfire for a night cap. It didn’t take long for the wind’s soft rustling through the pine trees to beckon us back to our tent and our plush, turned down bed, though. Soon, the stillness – which you will struggle to find elsewhere – pulled us into a wonderful, peaceful sleep.

NOTE:

Because of the remoteness of the camp, the electricity is powered by a generator, which is switched off at around 22:00.

48 APRIL - MAY 2023 l hellolifestyle.co.za
Aarde camp certainly brings heaven a little closer to home.

THINGS TO DO

Days at Canvas Collective start slow. After a Mimosa-complemented breakfast in bed, we went exploring. There’s plenty to do in and around the Hemel-en-Aarde camp. In addition to enjoying the beautiful scenery around your tent, you can go hiking on the farm and on hot summer days, the farm dam is the most tranquil spot to cool off in. After our swim, we enjoyed a delicious waterside picnic for lunch. If the short walk to the farm dam is too far you, there’s always the option of cooling off in the camp’s splash pool with a G&T in hand. For those feeling less adventurous, Samara’s introduction to baking Challah is a must.

Should you feel the urge to explore beyond the Hemel-en-Aarde

Canvas Collective camp (which we didn’t) the valley is a treasure trove of things to do. Whether you are an art lover, a wine enthusiast or an adventurer, you are sure to find something that will tickle your fancy. Onrus Beach is also just a short drive away for those keen on a bushand-beach experience.

GETTING THERE

Canvas Collective Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde camp is located on a 300-hectare working family farm in the picturesque valley, between Hermanus and Caledon. It’s a mere two-hour drive from Cape Town and while you don’t need a 4x4 to get there, low clearance vehicles will need to take it slow towards the end of the drive. H Q

As the world has clearly been returning to normal, so various event destinations have been contemplating, brainstorming, planning and implementing new ideas for their post-Covid events environment. By the looks of things, venues are excitedly and hopefully reinventing the wheel, considering different ways of accommodating the crowds.

Various venues seem to be exploring additional event hosting avenues. Wedding venues are opening themselves up for impressive art exhibitions and hotel spaces are setting the bar quite high when it comes to energy saving, renewable energy, sustainability and more. Not to mention the technology that now has to go into large exhibition spaces in order to accommodate delegates attending events virtually.

FAMILY TRAVEL:

VEHICLES WITH THE KNOW-HOW

While family travel is one of the things we love most, it does come with its challenges. From tired kids not wanting to remain seated in their car seats and toddlers tipping their snack boxes over onto their seats, to baby formula spilling all over the car’s carpets, or heaven forbid, someone forgets a nappy in the back… It’s chaos most of the time, but memories made to last. Luckily, there are vehicle manufacturers who know that the struggle of travelling with kids is real and some have even come close to perfecting the ideal family car.

CHERY TIGGO 7 PRO

We recently took a drive to Dullstroom with the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro and well, now we understand why Chery became a top ten vehicle brand in South Africa so rapidly. Chery is China’s most successful car exporter and has held this position for the past 35 years. Evidently, it’s also their aim to stay at the top, especially following the success of its Tiggo Pro range.

Chery claims to have a customer-first approach of offering exciting vehicles at affordable prices to South African customers.

JayJay Botes, National Sales Manager for Chery says: “Our customer-centric focus is the reason our dealer footprint now spans every province in South Africa. We currently have 76 appointed dealers to better support our growing customer base and to improve accessibility to this amazing brand.”

The Chery Tiggo 7 Pro accommodates a family of four rather easily and comes with various features fit for families with kids of any age. The latest model to join the South African lineup is the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro MAX, though. It is fitted with a 187 kW 2-litre petrol turbo engine and offers an unmatched list of specifications. That includes six airbags, a full array of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that include adaptive cruise control, and a luxury interior with multi-zone climate control, leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof.

The 8 Pro MAX and the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro are both lovely family vehicles that put the passenger first.

The Nissan Qashqai has remained an industry benchmark, having pioneered the crossover segment. It’s been a bestseller and leading award winner for the brand globally since its introduction into the market more than ten years ago and now, the third generation Qashqai has also been very well received. It received a Five Star EURO NCAP Rating and also won the Car of the Year in the United Kingdom.

The revamped Qashqai comes with Nissan’s Autonomous Driving Level 1 (Nissan ProPILOT), Predictive Front Collision Warning and Lane Keep Assist among various other innovations and awardwinning safety technologies.

We spoke to CEO and founder, Kobus Truter – a former chef and now a formidable designer – about his approach to design:

HL What is holistic interior design?

KT Holistic interior design is a design approach that considers the overall wellbeing of a space’s occupants, focusing on creating an environment that is aesthetically pleasing, functional and promotes physical and mental health. It often incorporates natural materials, lighting and other elements to create a harmonious and balanced atmosphere.

HL Where and how do you become inspired?

KT Travelling abroad and locally, spending time out in nature and drawing from life’s experiences.

HL What materials do you absolutely love working with?

KT All materials! I get hooked on different things, but also get tired of them after a while. Currently, I love working with natural materials like clay and wood.

HL What is the most rewarding part of the design process for you, and why?

KT I love all the different stages, much like being in the kitchen and conceptualising a dish from vision to execution. I love both sides of being creativae - methodical, strategic and allowing space to play in between.

HL Tell us about some of your favourite furnishings, décor items, collections, or sentimental art pieces you own?

KT I have a couple of small décor accessories and art pieces that I collected over the years of travelling. Currently, I love my little German white vases. I bought them on a flee market in Berlin. And, my handwoven silk rug from Marrekech. My dogs also love it! H

MOVING TO MAURITIUS?

Relocating to an idyllic island like Mauritius has become far more reachable over recent years, with many South Africans packing up and leaving their home country for white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and less stress. In fact, Executive Director of Park Lane Properties, Brian Blatch says the Mauritian property market is booming, with a large chunk of property buyers being South African. “There is a lot of construction happening; many new projects,” he says. “We can’t meet the demand.”

The island is a mere four-hour flight from South Africa, making commuting relatively painless. And, with many people working from home these days, living in Mauritius while working for a large corporate company in Joburg, is not impossible.

THREE SOUTH AFRICAN CITIES IN MAURITIUS

The Mauritian version of Cape Town must be in the south-western part of the island. This is where you’ll find the Rivière Noire

(Black River) district, famous for the 6 574-hectare Black River Gorges National Park. The natural reserve is filled with lovely hiking trails, indigenous forests and a variety of wildlife. It is perfect for families with a very outdoorsy, Capetonian vibe attached to it.

The geographically flat northern part of the island is similar to Joburg, with a strong island vibe for the younger crowd. Here you’re likely to still find a club open after 22:00, and Catamaran rides and lobster are very much a thing. This area has also proven to be a little more expensive on the property side. Central Mauritius can be compared to

TIPS WHEN MOVING TO MAURITIUS:

Durban’s Kloof area and with its cooler climate and some distance from the beach, it is a favourite among older people.

PERMIT PRESSURE?

Mauritius has five different residential permits which you can apply for. Whether it’s through property investment (buy a house of R7 million or more, and you’re in for good), a retirement visa or an occupational visa, there are options. And, with a clever contact like Park Lane Properties, obtaining a visa and buying or renting a property won’t be difficult at all. H

• A visit to Mauritius prior to committing to emigrating, is crucial.

• Considering transport taxes, buying a new car to take over to the island would be like buying it for twice the price. Rather take your old car.

• Bearing in mind that Mauritian houses are 250m² on average, you’ll have to consider a garage sale before the move.

• At least 80% of the rental properties in Mauritius are furnished, so even if you bring nothing over, you’ll still be fine.

DREAMING OF A LITTLE GIFT FROM SARS?

#HelloLifestyle

The 2022/23 tax year is over and while you wait for all the paperwork to come in so you can file your return, you’re probably dreaming of getting a little something back from SARS after filing season.

Edwin Theron, CEO at Sanlam Indie, says while the best thing about a tax refund is that it’s ‘extra’ money that you didn’t take into account in your budget, there is plenty of need for caution in managing it. “From an objective financial perspective, the worst thing you can do with a windfall is probably to spend the money on something you want, but don't need - especially if the rest of your finances are not in a healthy state. If you need to buy a new car and your tax refund helps you borrow less to do it, then you’re on the right track!”

Theron has a couple of other constructive ideas and hints for managing your refund:

DON’T PLAN ON A REFUND

Regard any refund you get as ‘extra money’, even though it’s yours in the first place. Don’t bank on getting a refund to help you meet expenses, in the event you don’t get it because of a change in calculations.

TOP UP YOUR SAVINGS

If you do get something back from SARS, it’s best to bank at least most of it. Using it to clear debt is a good start, as is starting that ‘emergency fund’ you’ve meant to establish for ages. Consider keeping it in a separate bank account to help minimise the temptation to splurge.

GET LIFE INSURANCE

Use your tax refund, or a portion of it, to close any gaps in disability and life insurance to help take care of yourself and your loved ones, should disaster strike. It’s one of those things we avoid thinking about because it can be unpleasant, but it’s the responsible thing to do.

SPOIL YOURSELF AND YOUR PARTNER

Fancy some quality time with your partner? A little return might give you the chance

to enjoy a night out at your favourite local restaurant – or stretch to a weekend away. Remember that while you’re rewarding yourself, you should manage your refund responsibly.

SHARE WHAT YOU HAVE

Fun and responsibility come together in helping others in need. The last few years have been challenging for millions of people in South Africa, so consider giving at least a portion of your return to a charitable organisation. Helping others can be incredibly fulfilling and if you donate to a registered NGO, you can add your donation as a tax deduction towards your next return. H
