Editor’s NOTE

It's not December, it's ‘Dezemba’, as we like to say here in South Africa. And just as it sounds, it's so much more than a month; it's a mood that embodies a vibrant, festive, and joyful energy, shared with loved ones, be it family, friends, or both.

For us ‘Saffers’, Dezemba and the coast seem to go hand in hand, and you will find that theme as our golden thread in this issue, with everything from seafood inspiration to seaside shopping flowing through these pages. One thing's for sure though, with both Atlantic and Indian Ocean coastlines, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to seaside escapes in this country.

For me, the perfect getaway means great weather, peaceful and pristine beaches, and gentle, family-friendly waves (nearby rivers and hotel pools don't hurt either). And let’s not forget great food, something that little seaside towns with authentic family-run restaurants are famous for.

With that perfect coastal getaway in mind, and that blend of beach bliss, family fun, and summer sunshine on the cards, allow me to suggest a quick tip to consider when choosing your Dezemba hangout: look for the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa star rating.

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa offers internationally recognised grading that ranges from one to five stars, as well as a fivestar premium category. It covers eight categories of accommodation, ranging from backpackers and hostels to luxury hotels, and even venues. These ratings reflect the quality, safety, and service travellers can expect.

These gradings are not just plaques on the wall; the council considers them a promise guaranteeing consistency and quality in line with the specific rating. It's also the establishment's promise to live up to the standard in line with their grading.

As hotel choices can make or break that Dezemba experience, you can visit the Grading Council's website, www.tourismgrading.co.za, to check the credentials of your chosen spot before you book.

Enjoy this time of year, folks. We spend all year looking forward to it, and sometimes pressure ourselves to relax so much that we end up not doing just that! Make it count, prioritise the downtime, and keep it simple where possible.

Stay safe,

Minesh

The challenge was to design the label for La Petite Ferme’s 2024 vintage limitededition Pinotage called The ZA. The brief was to blend South African art, culture, and winemaking into an extraordinary story. Jolien Koen, was announced the winner for her design Where landscape becomes legacy. We love it. MI CASA

A musician, storyteller, entrepreneur, and romantic; living not for fame, but for love and light

He doesn’t enter a room with the swagger of a chart-topping artist. He doesn’t lead with numbers, awards, or bragworthy milestones. Instead, he talks about love. About purpose. About light. As if these are the true measures of a life well-lived.

For J’Something – born João da Fonseca –music was never about stardom. It was about connection, community, and belonging, and ultimately, about building a home people could step into, a home called Mi Casa.

ROOTS & REINVENTION

Born in the Algarve, Portugal, J’Something’s story began long before the spotlight. His father worked in the hospitality industry, and when Sun International tapped him to open Fish River Sun in the Eastern Cape, the family moved to South Africa. João was seven, and he didn’t speak a word of English or any other South African language. He was just a young boy, wide-eyed and uprooted, suddenly tasked with rebuilding his life from scratch. But, he did it all with a smile, with his family standing behind him every step of the way.

Then came the name problem. “Most people could not pronounce my name,” he recalls. “I couldn’t really use my name as an artist if people couldn’t say it. So, I kind of had this idea based on what people would say: J’Something.”

“It's also like a way to deviate the attention in a way, because it's not all about me. It's more about the music and the message and the arts that we share, and the hope that it connects with people.”

A TWIST OF FATE

As in any standard interview, we asked him if he always knew he’d be a musician. He laughed softly at the question, “I don’t think we actually know anything. We all feel different things.”

As a kid, he’d sing for anyone who’d listen, but it wasn’t as innocent as you might think. J’Something, as a true businessman, would charge five rand for the show. He recalls how his life wasn’t mapped out — there was no vision board and absolutely no master plan.

THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

The moment happened at a party at Radisson Blu, just outside the Gautrain, in Sandton. It started off as the kind of night no one expected to be significant, but fate decided otherwise. J'Something, who was working for Soul Candi at the time, knew almost no one at the party, but in a moment of boldness, he walked up to the DJ, Dr Duda (Sipho Philemon Mohahlaza), and asked if he could sing over the beats. Dr Duda said yes. Minutes later, a stranger with a trumpet, Mo-T (Moshe Kgasoane), joined in. A crowd gathered, people danced, and in the chaos of improvised magic, three guys became brothers.

Once their jamming session came to a close, people were asking them for pictures. “I was like, ‘What is going on? I don’t even know these guys!’” They exchanged numbers and each went back home, assuming their relationship would exist only as a fond memory.

“I didn’t give up. After three months of constantly begging Duda and Mo to get into the studio with me, finally, they said yes. The first thing we ever recorded was

"I’VE WRITTEN A LOT OF SONGS FOR HER, BUT I’VE ALSO WRITTEN A LOT OF SONGS BECAUSE OF HER."

‘These Streets’ in 2011, which became the song of the year. So, yes, you could say everything changed that night.”

MY HOUSE IS YOUR HOUSE

One night around a fire, the trio brainstormed names. Nothing stuck until J’Something had an idea. “We were talking about how we wanted our music to feel like home to people, and I was thinking ‘home, home, home’. ‘Casa’ is Portuguese for home, so I said to the guys that we should call it ‘Mi Casa’, my home. And that was that.”

The band is constantly inspired by house music, community, and the Portuguese phrase, ‘Mi casa es su casa’: my house is your house. “From the beginning, we wanted a space of inclusivity, a space where everybody’s welcome. The name was our way of saying: ‘This is our house. And you are invited.’”

KEEPING THE CHEMISTRY ALIVE

Thirteen years in, Mi Casa is still intact –a rarity in music. Why? How?

“It’s the same principles that keep a marriage together: love, trust, respect, and commitment.” But J’Something says it is also all the external love they receive: the community, the people who come to their shows. “Just like in any relationship, they are committed to us, and we are committed to them.”

Continuing with the metaphor likening his band to a relationship, he tells us that “Of course, there are challenges and moments of friction,” but the band deals with those moments without explosions and egos, just brotherhood. “Thank God for those challenges, because it is what stretches us, and brings us back closer together. We deal with everything with a lot of grace, love, and respect.”

THE LOVE STORY THAT GROUNDS HIM

Before the fame, there was a girl he met through mutual friends — Coco. At the time, a relationship wasn’t on the cards. But later, their paths crossed again, and a whirlwind romance started: they spoke on BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), went on a first date,

and never parted. “I try my best to share how much I love this girl because I do. She often says we have been dating since our first date, and it’s true. We’ve been married for ten years now, and this girl, she feels like a real soulmate.”

Some of the band’s greatest songs emerged from this love. “I’ve written a lot of songs for her, but I’ve also written a lot of songs because of her. One of them is ‘Mamela’ and another, ‘Church Bells’, in which I actually write about our lobola.”

ARTISTRY: BEYOND THE STAGE

With roots in hospitality, J’Something opened his first restaurant, Something’s Cooking, in Pretoria. Later, he cofounded Artistry, a hub that supports storytelling, performance, and connection. “My wife and I created Artistry as a platform to showcase, celebrate, and preserve stories. We allow South African art in all forms to be celebrated. That’s what it has always been about.

We have the theatre, listening bar, and rooftop restaurant. Collectively, it’s a multisensory experience.”

DREAMING AS HIS LIFELINE

Ask him where he sees himself in five years, and he goes silent. “My religion is one day at a time.” He simply hopes for light, love, connection, and personal growth. And, if he experiences even a little bit of that, he considers it a life well-lived.

As far as the future goes, J’Something dreams big. “My wife and I do an event called Lover’s Rock, which is coming up again. Mi Casa is also doing the second edition of a cruise called Friendship. We are also working on a massive project in the heart of Joburg, but I am not allowed to say more than that. And of course, we are always creating music.”

“When we stop dreaming, we might as well not have breath in our lungs. Dreams are plenty, and how lucky am I to continue to dream day after day?”

A DIFFERENT KIND OF STAR

J’Something didn’t chase success. He was just a boy who loved music and lived life one day at a time. Now, he is a husband and a father too, and he simply wants to be the man who built a house, made it a home, and invited the world inside. H

“WHEN WE

STOP DREAMING,

WE MIGHT

AS WELL NOT HAVE BREATH IN OUR LUNGS. DREAMS ARE PLENTY, AND HOW LUCKY AM I TO CONTINUE TO DREAM DAY AFTER DAY?"

BEST SONGS OF 2025 – If the music we loved in 2025 tells us anything, it’s that this was a great year for a reset. Everywhere we looked and listened, our biggest stars seemed to be offering truths wrought from self-reflection and even insights for improvement. Relationships anchored many of the year’s most revealing and infectious tracks, such as Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild,” Gracie Abrams’ “That’s So True,” and Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need.” Some were venting, others came with solutions. Kehlani’s “Folded” urged us to release what no longer serves us, while Lady Gaga turned inward to find the real magic on “Abracadabra,” and BLACKPINK captured the sound of sisterhood on “JUMP.” There were songs about loss (Bad Bunny’s “DtMF”), and ones that celebrated success, like Drake’s “NOKIA,” Clipse’s “Ace Trumpets,” or CORTIS’ “GO!”

Like a conversation with a cherished friend, so many of the songs we loved in 2025 delivered wisdom, reflection, and, inevitably, release. These are the best songs of the year across all genres as chosen by the Apple Music editors.

MOVIES TO KEEP AN EYE ON

In The Family Plan 2, an Apple Original Film, it’s the holiday season, and Dan (Mark Wahlberg) has planned the perfect international vacation for his wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan) and their kids, until a mysterious figure from his past (Kit Harington) shows up with unfinished business. A cross-border game of cat-and-mouse ensues as Dan and his family battle, bicker, and bond their way through a series of bank heists, holiday hijinks, and car chases amid scenic European terrain.

Apple Original Films has announced that F1 (sometimes referred to as ‘F1 the Movie’), the highest-grossing sports film of all time, will make its global streaming debut on Apple TV on Friday, 12 December 2025, following its recordbreaking theatrical run. It follows Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), once dubbed “the greatest that never was.” He was Formula 1®’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate, Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling Formula 1® team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to Formula 1® for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team’s hotshot rookie, intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him, and he finds that in Formula 1®, your teammate is your fiercest competition – and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone.

SERIES, SERIES, SERIES

Born to be Wild is a new wildlife series, narrated by SAG Award winner Hugh Bonneville (Paddington, Downton Abbey, The Secret Lives of Animals). Filmed over several years across three continents, the six-part documentary series follows six endangered young animals as they grow up in our world but are destined to return to theirs. From their earliest days through their journey to life in the wild, the series highlights the challenges, triumphs and resilience that define their survival, both for the animals and the extraordinary people working to raise and protect them. Born to be Wild premieres worldwide on Friday, 19 December, on Apple TV.

Pluribus is a highly anticipated science fiction drama produced by Breaking Bad creator and Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan, starring Rhea Seehorn. The episodes in the nine-part series come out weekly, with the entire series to be available by 26 December 2025. Pluribus is a genre-bending original in which the most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness, making for an interesting storyline through the series, to say the least.

The festive season is a time for joy, family, celebration, and often, indulgence. Between the office parties, braais, long lunches, and family reunions, it becomes easy to lose track of what we eat and drink due to the abundance of delicious food and treats. While food is central to celebration at this time of year, it can lead to unwanted weight gain, fatigue, and feelings of guilt. With a mindful approach upfront, you can still fully enjoy the festivities and maintain control over your health and weight.

WHY DO WE OVEREAT DURING THE HOLIDAYS?

Many factors make it easy to overindulge in December:

• Food is everywhere. Festive options, often rich and sugary, become central to social interactions.

• Alcohol flows more freely, which not only adds calories but also lowers self-control, leading to overeating.

• Stress and emotions can be both joyful and overwhelming, and many people turn to food for comfort.

Research shows that most adults gain between two and four kilograms over the holiday period. This may not sound like much, but it is often not lost after the festive season. Over time, this ‘holiday weight creep’ starts to accumulate.

UNDERSTAND YOUR TRIGGERS

Before you reach for another helping, pause and ask yourself why you are eating. Are you genuinely hungry, or is it bait, boredom, or social pressure (from friends, spouses, parents, in-laws)? Awareness of emotional and situational triggers will help you to make more conscious decisions.

FESTIVE FEASTING:

MAKING BETTER CHOICES

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

A useful tip: use the H.A.L.T. method. Before eating, ask yourself if you’re Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. If it’s not hunger, address the real issue appropriately. A short walk, a chat, or a glass of water often helps. Remember, there is no award for popping buttons on your clothing.

SOME FESTIVE TIPS:

Food Choices:

You don’t have to skip your favourite dishes, but portion and balance are key. Try these festive-friendly strategies:

• Start with salad and veggies. Filling up on fibre and water-rich foods helps control your appetite.

• Watch your portion sizes. Use a smaller plate, and don’t stack it up with food.

• Eat slowly; this gives your body a chance to signal when you are full.

• Limit excess amounts of creamy sauces and dressings.

• Take away the snack bowl – this stops the ‘mindless munching’ every time you walk past it.

• If you know you are having dessert later, avoid that second helping.

Alcohol and Sugary drinks

Alcohol is one of the biggest hidden sources of festive calories; a single glass of wine or beer adds 120 – 150 calories. Sweet cocktails and ciders often double this amount. Try alternating alcoholic drinks with sparkling water or sugar-free mixers. Swap out sugary sodas for sugar-free ones. Cut back on fruit juices – they are loaded with sugars and calories.

Stay Active

The holidays do not mean we should take a break from movement. Short bursts of activity can keep your metabolism active –try a walk, dancing, or some active family games. Consistency matters more than intensity, so try to keep moving, even if it’s just to your favourite song!

Hunger control

• Do not skip meals before a big event – you will arrive starving and overeat.

• Stay hydrated: thirst can mimic hunger.

• Sleep well: tiredness drives cravings for sugar and comfort food.

One indulgent meal will not undo your efforts, but do not let this spiral into everyday indulgence.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The festive season should be enjoyed, and food is part of the connection, tradition, and pleasure we experience at this time of year. The goal is not deprivation, but mindful enjoyment. By staying conscious of your choices and listening to your body, you can celebrate fully without January regret. Balance, not perfection, is what leads to lasting health. H 1 weightlosscentre.co.za

HAND-ILLUSTRATED BLOG NOVELS WITH A SOUTH AFRICAN TWIST

We couldn't resist telling you about this exciting series, and for this one, you don’t have to leave home. Marianna Lunardoni is an independent author and illustrator from Italy, now based in Portugal, who has created two entirely hand-illustrated blog novels (fictional stories told through serialised blog posts) inspired by what she describes as South

African history and memory.

The first, Alice in Johannesburg, follows the journey of a young Afrikaner woman, raised in Switzerland, who decides to return to South Africa in the 1970s. The work, according to Lunardoni, blends historical research, illustration, and imagination.

The second piece of work, titled Once upon a time in South Africa, is set in the 19th century, depicting what that period looked and felt like. Lunardoni points out that this piece of work was written in Italian, but that over twenty chapters are already available online in English.

The author has also published an AInarrated audiobook titled Alice is no longer in Wonderland, which completes the collection. All these works are non-commercial, meaning they are freely accessible and designed to support both readers and educators through original visual storytelling methods. We've listed the links below. The author can be reached at mariposta2007@gmail.com for more information.

UNDER THE AEGIS ART GALLERY

Under the Aegis, founded in 2020 by curator Anelisa Mangcu, is a pioneering art gallery based in Cape Town and dedicated to what Mangcu describes as 'fostering connections between artists, collectors, and institutional collections from across the African continent and the diaspora'. Programmes focus on the exploration of intersectional African identity, challenging paradigms, and drawing connections between the historical and the contemporary. The venue specialises in curatorial services, exhibition production, and art facilitation, allowing artists to showcase their work on a global stage.

The current exhibition, As Tides Change, showing into December, brings together a selection of emerging and established African artists whose work explores a narrative around change – both personal and collective for the artists – and the way in which African identities and creative expressions continue to evolve.

"As Tides Change invites us to think about transformation not as rupture but as return," says Mangcu, who also stands among the first Black women to own and run an independent gallery in the Cape. As Tides Change invites audiences to move beyond static perceptions of African art, towards a deeper engagement with material, colour, and time. This gallery has a unique ethos and personality. COUNTRYSTYLE DINING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

The Village Green Family Restaurant at Blair Atholl Estate

Every now and then, a place surprises even the most well-seasoned foodie.

At Hello Lifestyle Magazine, we’ve had the pleasure of discovering every ‘hidden gem’ and ‘farm-to-fork’ concept within a 50km radius of Jozi. But The Village Green at Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate genuinely feels like stumbling into another world.

Set on Gary Player’s original farm, this country estate is wrapped in towering trees, manicured lawns, roaming wildlife, and the Crocodile River threading its way through the landscape. It’s a sprawling, natural oasis that feels hours from the city, even though it’s barely 20 minutes from Fourways.

Arriving is refreshingly simple: book via Dineplan, receive your entry code, and before you know it, you’re pulling up beside horses grazing under the shade of acacias, their fly

masks and ear bonnets giving them an oddly glamorous, countryside-chic look. It’s the first hint that Blair Atholl doesn’t do ‘ordinary.’

DINING IN A LUXURIOUS FARM-STYLE HOME

The Village Green itself sits tucked inside lush gardens overlooking rolling lawns and a sparkling pool. Walking in, guests often pause as the restaurant has that unexpected feeling of stepping into someone’s luxurious farm-style home. Think warm timber accents, comfortable dining chairs, earthy textures, and a kind of unhurried charm that instantly slips your shoulders down a few centimetres.

Outside, the gardens bloom with life. Children dart between the playground, the large chess set, and the turf soccer court, while parents claim their well-earned moment of calm with a cold glass of Babylonstoren Chardonnay or an

icy Super Bock on tap. Between the sunshine, the space, and the unmistakable hum of relaxed families settling in for the afternoon, it’s easy to see why The Village Green is considered one of Joburg’s most family-friendly dining spots.

The NR Collection, known for crafting spaces rooted in warmth, quality meals, and genuine hospitality, has infused The Village Green with all the elements they’re celebrated for: generous portions, down-to-earth elegance, and that quiet attention to detail that makes a restaurant instantly feel like a favourite.

A CULINARY LINE-UP WORTH THE DRIVE

The menu leans into hearty, flavour-forward cooking, comfort with a polished edge. Starters set the tone beautifully, especially the famed beef trinchado (R140), tender and deeply savoury, finished in their signature

#HelloJoburg by Justyn Spinner Images: Supplied

Portuguese sauce and served with delicately pickled vegetables. It’s the kind of dish that immediately makes you think, “Well, we’re definitely coming back.”

For mains, the queen prawns (R270) are impossible not to mention. Slicked in garlic or lemon butter, they arrive perfectly charred and fragrant. And if you’re ravenous, you can throw in a flame-grilled peri-peri half chicken for good measure. It’s indulgent in all the right ways.

Lighter bites also hit the mark. The chicken prego roll (R85) is a quick-fire favourite. A tender chicken breast, sandwiched between a soft Portuguese roll, smothered in punchy marinade. No fuss. Ideal for golfers coming off the course or parents needing something speedy before the next round of playground negotiations. And when it’s time for something

sweet? Their ice-cream nut cake (R115), draped in a rich homemade Bar-One sauce, is pure nostalgia dressed up for dinner.

Wine lovers can expect thoughtful pairings too. The Rupert & Rothschild Classique (R450) remains a robust, reliable red blend, while the Babylonstoren Chardonnay (R795) is an elegant white with the perfect balance for seafood or sunny afternoons on the terrace.

A VENUE MADE FOR MEMORY-MAKING

Beyond its everyday appeal, The Village Green is a dream setting for weddings, celebrations, and corporate gatherings. The restaurant’s sweeping lawns, stone walkways, and multiple venue spaces create endless opportunities for beautiful events, made even better with the restaurant’s signature hospitality.

For those craving countryside calm without venturing far from Joburg, The Village Green at Blair Atholl strikes that perfect balance: refined but relaxed, family-friendly but quietly luxurious, hearty but elevated. It’s a place where kids run free, adults finally exhale, and a simple lunch somehow turns into a whole afternoon. H 1 www.nrcollection.co.za

INSIDE JOHANNESBURG’S NEWEST PRIVATE CANNABIS LOUNGE:

THE CANNA COLLECTIVE AT OAKLANDS

There’s a quiet revolution happening in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs – one that feels less like a retail opening and more like an awakening of culture.

Tucked within the leafy calm of Oaklands Shopping Centre, the new Canna Collective Lounge redefines what it means to experience cannabis in South Africa. It’s not just a store; it’s a space — one designed for conversation, connection, and calm.

Walk through the doors and you’re immediately struck by the ambience. The lighting is soft, the décor warm and deliberate, and the air carries a subtle scent of refinement — the kind that invites you to stay a little longer than planned. Members describe it as 'a home away from home' and 'a hidden gem', where the world outside seems to slow down the moment you step in.

For Canna Collective, this new lounge is more than a physical expansion — it’s the next chapter in the brand’s journey to bring cannabis culture into the modern lifestyle space. Since its inception, the Collective has focused on creating private, membersonly environments that blend sophistication with accessibility. Each lounge is a celebration of the cannabis plant’s potential — a place where quality, education, and enjoyment coexist in perfect balance.

At Oaklands, that vision is on full display. Plush seating and curated music set the tone for unwinding or connecting with others, while attentive, knowledgeable staff ensure each visit feels personal. The team doesn’t simply sell products — they guide experiences. Whether you’re looking to discover a new strain, enjoy a vape, or unwind with a pre-roll, every interaction reflects the brand’s signature attention to detail.

The Oaklands Lounge has also become an unlikely haven for working professionals — a space where you can send an email, take a quiet call, or simply breathe between meetings. Whether you’re seeking a social sanctuary, some downtime, a place to work, or a moment of quiet indulgence, the Canna Collective Oaklands Lounge is the new gold standard for cannabis lifestyle spaces in South Africa.

MARU KOREAN STEAKHOUSE: THE LIFE AND SEOUL OF BREE STREET

Among the many hip eateries with their diverse global flavours that line Bree Street is a new dining destination: Maru Korean Steakhouse, the latest member of the Pan Collection, introduces something unique by bringing the heartbeat of modern Seoul to Cape Town.

Walking in, you are greeted with a simple, predominantly black, dimly lit interior contrasted with red neon lights and other bold accents that make it look both sophisticated and edgy. Despite the names of the drinks on the cocktail menu that reference K-pop artists and songs, the DJ (yes, they have a DJ) plays pumping music that could be from anywhere. This fuels the vibe without trying too hard to be ‘Korean’.

The à la carte restaurant features an array of options for different tastes - ranging from caviar to chicken nuggets and beyond - but it primarily highlights the restaurant's two signature meals: The Butcher's Experience (where the finest local grass-fed and Wagyu beef cuts are grilled Korean barbecue-style), and By the Bucket (a Korean fried chicken feast, which includes two distinct styles of fried chicken served in a bucket). If you're torn between the two, the right answer is to order one of each to share with your plus one.

Each comes with a beef or chicken consommé and “ban-chan”, a range of Korean small side dishes. The beef also comes with a scallion salad, a savoury egg soufflé, and a doenjang stew (with clams, mussels, and anchovies).

While the term ‘Korean barbecue” normally implies you have to cook your own meat, here that is not the case. The steak is carefully prepared at a BBQ station visible to diners and then cut with shears when presented at your table. The four cuts of beef included in The Butcher’s Experience were perfectly

tender, juicy, cooked to perfection, and each more delicious than the last. They were delectable on their own, but pairing them with the different ban-chan side dishes made for a range of surprising flavour combinations.

While the beef stole the show, the chicken certainly did not disappoint. The first drumstick was perfectly crispy, while the second, with a soy garlic glaze, was sticky and delicious. This came with four signature sauces, which again made for interesting flavour combinations.

An optional wine pairing is available for both options, but we sampled items from the cocktail menu. After explaining our gin-based drink preferences to one of the mixologists, he whipped us up a “Love Scenario”. It was sophisticated, floral, and perfectly bittersweet. This was followed by a non-alcoholic cocktail, “Wannabe”, which was light, fizzy, and not too sweet, with surprising pops of boba to add to the fun.

We were also treated to truffle kimbap as an appetiser, cold perilla seed noodles as a palate cleanser, and Maru vanilla soft serve with soy caramel for dessert. The combination of sweetness and umami in the soft serve made for a strangely magical ending to the meal.

With its bold design, considered menu, and faultless execution, Maru delivers a refreshingly different experience that lingers long after the last bite. H

FESTIVE MAGIC UNDER THE MOUNTAIN:

YOUR ULTIMATE CAPE TOWN HOLIDAY GUIDE

There’s a distinct shift in the air when December arrives in the Mother City. The southeaster settles, the afternoons stretch out in a golden haze, and Cape Town’s most iconic garden transforms into a vibrant amphitheatre of joy. This festive season, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is the beating heart of the holidays.

From the soul-stirring nostalgia of traditional carols to the electrifying rhythms of a New Year’s Eve blowout, the garden offers to headline events that define the season. If you are looking to come alive in Cape Town and soak up the true spirit of summer, there is simply no better place to be.

SING UNDER THE STARS AT THE ROTARY CHRISTMAS CAROLS

Before the countdown to 2026 begins, the garden hosts one of the city’s most cherished traditions. The Cape Town Carols at Kirstenbosch returns to the slopes from Thursday, 18 December to Sunday, 21 December 2025.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Kirstenbosch and sponsored by Pick n Pay, this event is the epitome of festive community spirit. Picture the scene: thousands of soft lights flickering on the lawns as the sun dips behind the mountain, families huddle together on picnic blankets, and the air is filled with the sound of thousands of voices singing in unison.

This year’s iteration promises to be a ‘sing under the stars’ experience like no other. The pageant will be narrated by the well-loved Nick Plummer and backed by the majestic sounds of the Cape Town Concert Brass Band, ensuring a perfect blend of professional performance and crowd participation. Whether you are a traditionalist who loves the age-old Christmas story or are simply there for the Jingle Bells singalong, the atmosphere is pure magic.

Gates for the carols open at 17:00, giving you plenty of time to settle in. For those seeking a touch of extra comfort, Pick n Pay Smart Shopper members can even book designated seating that includes a chair. It is the perfect way to gather your loved ones, pause the holiday rush, and embrace the peace and joy of the season that is unmistakably world-class.

THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE SPECTACULAR BRINGS YOU THE ULTIMATE COUNTDOWN

Once the carols have faded, the energy shifts from serene to spectacular. On 31 December 2025, the garden prepares for the biggest party of the year. If you are looking for the perfect way to bid 2025 farewell, the Kirstenbosch New Year’s Eve Concert is the unmissable ticket.

This isn’t your average concert, it’s a crossgenerational celebration of pop excellence. The stage will ignite with a high-energy double bill featuring the legendary Mango Groove and The Billy Joel Experience. Expect a night where iconic pop-kwela meets the timeless piano classics. Mango Groove,

with their 40-year legacy of joy, will bring the ‘dance of the sun’ to the night, while The Billy Joel Experience, featuring Alexander Broussard, will deliver the piano-man anthems that everyone knows by heart. It is a powerhouse night of music designed to get you on your feet and dancing into the new year.

Unlike the standard Sunday sessions, the gates for this special event open at 19:00, with the concert kicking off at 20:30 and running all the way into 2026. It is a fusion of nostalgia, celebration, and the ‘goosebump moments’ that only live music in such a breathtaking setting can provide.

COME ALIVE, THIS SEASON

Whether you are swaying to “Silent Night” or stomping your feet to “Special Star” as the clock strikes twelve, Kirstenbosch is the ultimate backdrop for your festive memories.

The Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts and festive events are about connection, joy, and the beauty of experiencing art in harmony with nature. But be warned: tickets for both the Carols and the New Year’s Eve bash are limited and known to sell out fast.

So, dust off your dancing shoes, bring out your picnic baskets, round up your loved ones, and prepare for a summer of music like no other. This is your invitation to celebrate life in one of the most beautiful gardens in the world. H

RIBS AND BURGERS,

THE WAY TO GO THIS FESTIVE SEASON

Ask the founders of Ribs and Burgers Grillhouse about their ethos, and they will tell you it comes down to one thing: quality you can taste. For this chain, it’s all about authenticity, craftsmanship, and an unwavering commitment to great food.

Visit a Ribs and Burgers restaurant, as we did in Pretoria, and you will see that everything

is cooked over flame, just the way we South Africans like it. A chat with the restaurant manager at the Menlyn branch reveals that every ingredient, be it the signature rack of ribs, handcrafted burgers, or premium steaks, is carefully sourced from premium suppliers.

It is also clear that although the name may not suggest it, steaks have become a major focus, with the crowd across the ‘boerewors

#HelloPretoria by Minesh Bhagaloo Images: Supplied

curtain’ embracing a wider variety of meat on the menu. From juicy cuts to irresistible char, the menu’s focus is clearly more ‘grillhouse’ than ‘fast food’.

Having said that, burgers do remain the soul of the brand, built on brioche and potato buns. These buns deserve a special mention: baked to perfection, soft, golden, and impossible to ignore when you bite into that patty. The thick shakes are another highlight if, like us, you have a soft spot for the sugary side of life. They are the perfect accompaniment to that juicy burger or plate of tender ribs.

It’s also about reinvention at Ribs and Burgers, with December bringing a fresher menu, featuring the arrival of the Smash Burger to the gourmet range on offer. The

“COME

HUNGRY, LEAVE HAPPY”

owners believe this will be more than just another burger; it marks a new chapter in solidifying Ribs and Burgers as SA’s premium burger destination.

The upgraded menu will ensure that your very finest steak-craving is catered for, be it South African Holstein, Jersey, or even Wagyu, with the chefs skilled in bringing out the distinct flavour of each profile and cut.

Aside from the great service and welcoming ambience of the location we visited, it becomes apparent that there’s also a keen focus on the people who work, run, and live the brand, day in and day out. After commenting on the service, the manager explained that the company is intentional about putting people first – be it through building strong teams, investing in staff

training, or simply creating a culture rooted in consistency and hospitality.

And Pretoria has voted accordingly, with these branches (there’s another at Lintons Corner) winning both Best Burgers in Pretoria, and Best Burger on Uber Eats. The R99 lunch menu has also proved quite popular, with locals enjoying midday value paired with premium offerings. Also, check out the Uber Eats and Mr Delivery apps, you may find some sneaky added-value surprises over the festive season.

“Come hungry, leave happy” is the promise, and we reckon this chain, especially the Menlyn branch, delivers on it.

A significant highlight is the Nelson Mandela statue, unveiled in 2013, which stands prominently in front of the buildings and symbolises peace, democracy, and reconciliation in our land. OH WHAT A PLACE! INSIDE NANDO’S 38 YEAR LEGACY

Not many people realise this, but Nando’s started with humble beginnings as a single restaurant in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, in 1987. Believe it or not, this author visited that branch not long after it opened and vividly remembers the family member who took him along to try what he called “nextlevel chicken”, predicting it would become something massive one day. He was certainly on point with that prophecy!

Now, 38 years later, the menu has grown to include everything from full, half, or quarter butterfly-cut chicken to burgers, pitas, salads, and a variety of other innovative bites. Not only has the brand become a spicy household name, but it has grown into the largest South African restaurant group to expand beyond our borders. Best known for its authentic peri-peri flame-grilled chicken, Nando’s now delights guests in many markets the world over, with all recipes – from the extensive range of chicken-bastings to sauces, spices, and more –remaining a closely guarded secret.

The brand has just launched a new ad campaign, tagged ‘Oh What a Place!’ to capture its ethos of ‘Rooted in people, powered by Culture.’ This aims to reignite the flame that has made South Africa love Nando’s for 38 years, focusing on the people behind the brand and that famous taste. It celebrates Nando’s foundations: great food, warm people, and a space that feels unmistakably South African.

According to Nando’s CEO Mike Cathie, “We’ve been rebuilding from the kitchen out – to focus on what gives us our real fire: exceptional food, a better total experience, and a brand that reflects the true spirit of South Africa.”

Cathie points out that everything – from service rituals to design to the menu – has been engineered, optimised, and in many instances, reimagined to signal a return to what really matters to customers. This includes more generous meals: louder laughs, bigger sauce bottles, and in some restaurants, that even means bottomless soft serve and drinks. He describes it as a deliberate shift from ‘fast to full’.

We visited a local branch, and it was ‘Oh What a Place’! Nando’s has become a vibey and colourful space, with premium decor and finishes, and waitrons who come to your table – no having to order at the till. Sure, takeaways are still on offer, but you can start thinking about Nando’s for a date night versus only a

pop-by-for-a-burger kind of place.

We spent two hours relaxing and working through the vast menu in three courses. We firmly believe that if you told someone three decades ago that they could get grilled halloumi at Nando’s, they would have told you that you had the wrong brand in mind. We also saw the realisation of the ‘more generous meals and bigger sauce bottles’ promise. The meal felt hearty and healthy, and the brand is succeeding at getting that homegrown South African feel through both the menu and the ambience.

Look out for the new ad campaign, which has that Nando’s flavour to it. Also, try to visit a branch over the holidays, you may be surprised at what you find in look, taste, and feel. H

How the Right Lighting Transforms Your Home and Your Mood IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Lighting is one of the quietest influences in any home; subtle enough to go unnoticed, yet powerful enough to change how a room feels within seconds. The right glow can make your kitchen energising, your bedroom calming, your braai area festive, and your patio magical. As South Africans head into the long, golden evenings of summer, now is the perfect moment to rethink the lighting choices that set the tone for everything from everyday living to special celebrations.

What many homeowners don’t realise is just how much colour temperature affects mood. Warm white lighting (2700K–3000K) creates intimacy, softness, and comfort; perfect for bedrooms, lounges, dining rooms, and outdoor entertaining. Cool white and daylight tones (4000K–6000K) feel crisp and bright, making them ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, and task-heavy areas. Choose warm for winding down; choose cool for getting things done.

Then there’s the question of fittings, which shape both style and mood. Inside the home,

STELLAR LIGHTING

pendant lighting offers a beautiful way to create visual focus — suspended above dining tables, kitchen islands, entrance halls, or reading corners. Downlights remain popular for general illumination, but combining these with floor lamps or decorative wall lights brings in layered warmth. In living areas, the goal is simple: avoid overly bright, stark lighting. Instead, create zones of comfort with varied sources, each casting its own personality.

Outdoors is where lighting becomes emotional. String lighting - arguably the

most nostalgic and joyful of all lighting forms - can transform even the simplest patio into a celebration space. Whether draped along a pergola or stretched across a garden entertaining area, their warm glow invites people to stay longer and relax deeper. Lanterns and solar-powered garden lights add pockets of ambience, guiding guests through pathways or softening the edges of outdoor seating areas.

We’ve recently discovered a proudly local company called Stellar Lighting which we feel truly shines in this space. Their range of warm-toned pendants, LED solutions, lanterns, and outdoor string lights is designed with atmosphere in mind. They describe it best: lighting shouldn’t just brighten a space; it should make life feel lighter. Their products use high-quality components, beautifully warm hues, and durable outdoor materials that are perfect for South African weather.

Of course, lighting in South Africa also comes with practical considerations. With many homes using generators, inverters, battery systems, or full solar, understanding

wattage and amperage is essential. Highenergy bulbs drain backup power quickly, while low-wattage LEDs preserve both battery capacity and ambience. Stellar Lighting’s LED options consume a fraction of the power of traditional bulbs, making them ideal for load-shedding and solar systems without compromising on moodsetting glow.

With the festive season approaching, now is the perfect moment to rethink outdoor areas. A simple set of dimmable string lights can turn a backyard into a place of celebration. Solar lanterns can create pathways for evening gatherings. Pendant lights can elevate dining spaces with soft, warm, golden tones. The right lighting invites people to linger longer, laugh louder, and connect deeper.

To celebrate the partnership, Stellar Lighting and Hello Lifestyle are giving one lucky reader the chance to win a Stellar StringLight Hamper worth R5,000. H

SCOOT & THE CITY

They say that necessity is the mother of all invention, and when it dawned on the author that his daily commute involved no highway or byway driving, the thought of the humble scooter crossed his mind.

“It’s red, like a Ferrari,” was the reaction from the publisher of Hello Lifestyle Magazine when I scooted down the driveway, arriving at the office on my latest mode of transport, the 150cc Big Boy Scooter on loan to us for a long-term test.

Pulling the trigger on trying two wheels in the weekday commute was indeed no easy decision. It started with the realisation that the daily run inside the Northern Suburbs was all of six kilometres each way. My first go-to was the bicycle. I say ‘bicycle’ with a pinch of salt, as pukka cyclists scoff at the mildest suggestion that an electric bicycle should even have the word associated with

Is the humble scooter the forgotten hero of the short commute? We explore the pros and cons of taking to two wheels in Johannesburg.

have to rely on your earbuds to relay, as there isn’t a rev counter - but let me assure you, with a bike weighing a tad over 100kg, the power-to-weight ratio here is solid, and there is more than enough voomah for you to skittle through traffic at city speed limits.

The sweet spot is around 40-50km/h max: it’s where the engine purrs and you still feel quite safe and stable. I can’t tell you what stability feels like any faster, as I prefer the slow and steady approach (not that the taxis appreciate this mindset, I may add). Maximum speed is claimed at 95km/h, and interestingly, the spec sheet lists a cruising speed of 60-75km/h. Why anyone would want to do close to 100km/h on a scooter, though, is beyond me, even if technically it can go that fast.

The greatest boon comes at the pumps. With a tank capacity of 5.3 litres and fuel consumption of 2.8l/100km, it means that I seldom need to fill up, making this the ultimate economy-run contender. Around R100 should get you close to the 180km range, making it quite the budget-friendly solution. Factor in the R21 000 (including VAT) price tag, and it’s hard not to see the overall value proposition on the cards here.

it. Be that as it may, my electric bicycle was superb in getting me to the office, while also affording me the sometimesunwelcome opportunity to reach my cardio quota for the day.

The shortcomings of cycling, though, are the sadly lacking dedicated cycling lanes our roads need, the poor condition of our pavements, and naturally, that slower speeds mean longer commutes. And shew, let’s be honest, bicycle seats offer so little comfort for the nether regions. Hence the introduction of my little red city warrior, which, when I ‘math’d the math’, felt like the perfect solution to all my electric bicycle woes.

It certainly is a zooty little number, offering a 150cc engine that, in this kind of iteration, can feel like a 500cc, with a modest 6.5kW on offer at a staggering 7000rpm. That latter number you would

The two-wheeled adventure has officially begun, so watch these pages for driving impressions, road reactions, newly scripted weather prayers, and general usability feedback on the bike’s features. For now, we’re bonding, and we do need to decide on a name. The odometer is showing just over 150km of distance covered, and the first impressions have left me wondering why I don’t see more scooters on the roads (aside from the shopping-delivery bandits who clearly spend too many weekends watching MotoGP).

A shout-out to the really efficient team at Big Boy Fourways, who supply many a big company with motorcycle fleets. Based on our interactions with them, it’s easy to understand why they are so popular. The prep, delivery, and general instructions have been top-notch. Go do some mystery shopping at this branch, you won’t be left wanting. H

HEAD OF SMALL ENTERPRISES AT STANDARD BANK Q&A WITH DEENASH PILLAY

South Africa’s entrepreneurial spirit is alive and determined — but running a small business today still comes with real obstacles: access to capital, skills development, the right networks, and the ever-evolving digital landscape. Few institutions understand this better than Standard Bank, and at the heart of their Small Enterprise strategy is Deenash Pillay, a leader who believes in meeting entrepreneurs where they are, walking the journey with them, and unlocking the tools that turn potential into sustainable growth.

In our exclusive interview with Mr Pillay, we unpack Standard Bank’s three core pillars for advancing SMMEs: Access to Funding, Skills & Non-Financial Support, and Market Access through Digital Enablement.

HLM: Mr Pillay, Standard Bank places strong emphasis on supporting SMMEs from the ground up. Why is this approach so important?

DP: South Africa’s small businesses are the engine of our economy — and when they thrive, our communities thrive. But we also know that many entrepreneurs face challenges long before they’re ready to approach a bank. That’s why our approach starts at the most fundamental level: understanding who our customers are, where they are in their business journey, and what they need to grow.

HLM: One of your key pillars is Access to Funding and Financial Solutions. How is Standard Bank helping small businesses overcome this challenge?

DP: Access to funding has long been one of the biggest barriers for small enterprises. We’ve spent years refining a more flexible, inclusive approach to financing. This includes everything from traditional loans and working-capital products to more innovative and blended finance options designed for businesses at different growth stages.

But equally important is helping entrepreneurs prepare for funding. Many businesses have strong potential but don’t understand what investors or lenders look

for. So, we also guide customers on business planning, financial readiness, and how to position themselves for investment.

HLM: The second pillar speaks to NonFinancial Support. Why has the bank invested so heavily in this area?

DP: Not every problem can be solved with money. Many entrepreneurs simply need knowledge, structure, or a mentor to point them in the right direction. That’s why we’ve built a suite of non-financial support services that help entrepreneurs gain confidence in running and growing their businesses.

Through our BizConnect platform, we offer free educational content, sector insights, step-by-step guides, and practical tools for business planning and management. We pair that with advisory services, mentoring programmes, entrepreneurship workshops, and business development support.

HLM: Market access is a major pain point for SMMEs. How does your third pillar, Market Access and Digital Enablement, address this?

DP: You can have a great business model, a brilliant product, and strong financial planning, but without access to markets, growth becomes almost impossible. That’s why this pillar is so crucial. We help businesses connect to new markets, locally, regionally, and internationally, by leveraging digital tools and the power of technology.

This includes support with e-commerce platforms, digital payments, cybersecurity readiness, and strategies for online visibility. We also create opportunities for SMMEs to connect with corporate partners, supply chains, and ecosystems that may otherwise feel out of reach.

HLM: Standard Bank’s BizConnect resource portal has become a go-to platform for entrepreneurs across the country. What makes this such a powerful tool?

DP: BizConnect is our way of democratising knowledge. Whether you’re a startup in its first year, a growing enterprise navigating expansion, or simply someone with a

business idea, BizConnect gives you a place to learn, plan, and connect.

It includes everything from business plan templates and tax guidance to sector research, how-to videos, legal basics, marketing insights, and real-world case studies. The portal is updated constantly, and it’s completely free to customers and non-customers alike.

HLM: What message would you give to South African entrepreneurs who are considering starting or moving their business banking journey to Standard Bank?

DP: My message is this: you don’t have to build your business alone. At Standard Bank, we understand the realities of entrepreneurship and the risks, the long nights, the uncertainty, and the ambition that drives it all. Our role is to give you the financial tools, the knowledge base, and the market access you need to succeed.

Standard Bank’s free BizConnect platform is a powerful starting point for any entrepreneur looking to expand their knowledge, sharpen their skills, or access practical tools for managing a small business. H
