University of California Irvine's (UCI) Middle Earth Housing, named after the fictional setting of J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, is an upcoming residential structure at UCI. The building will allow UCI students to study, collaborate, dine and socialize in one space.
Middle Earth resulted from greater demand for student housing and a desire to combat ongoing student housing issues on campus. The two towers will provide 500 beds in addition to a new 1,000-seat dining facility, five large lounges, study rooms, multipurpose rooms, recreational space and administrative offices.
The project is design-build and Helix 's scope includes a complete turnkey electrical system including tele/data, A/V, security systems and fire alarm system.
Project Manager Roena Garcia stated,
“It is rewarding to know that by creating a LEEDPlatinum facility, Helix is playing an integral role in helping UCI become carbon-neutral by 2025. Plus, when you encounter an RFI discussing the correct grammatical structure of an Elvish language, you know you are working on something truly unique.
