Wir widmen diese Ausgabe dem 30. Jahrestag des Berliner Mauerfalls und der friedlichen Revolution, die dazu geführt hat.

Dear Reader,

We are dedicating this issue to the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the peaceful revolution that led to it. Unfortunately, while we celebrate this unique date in history that ended the Cold War and reshaped Europe, actual and figurative walls go up all over the world. With our magazine HEIMAT abroad we hope to make a small contribution to support the German-American friendship. For this issue, though, we want to focus on the positive effects of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and celebrate. To start off, we are excited that German ambassador to the U.S., Emily Haber, contributed our guest commentary on page 7. The 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall marks also the end of the Deutschlandjahr “Wunderbar together”. There are plenty of events still happening around the country this fall, like concerts, lectures and exhibitions. We compiled some of the highlights on page 14/15. ►► What else can you find in this issue? Germany is at the forefront of innovation. Read about the year of AI in Germany and the Hyperloop competition won by the TU Munich in our business section. We also had the opportunity to interview Niki Wente, a 5th generation wine grower of German descent in California. Niki will also be a wine host this year on AmaWaterways River cruises which our publisher Gabi Hegan was able to experience this summer. Check out her travel report on page 26/27. And last but not least – it’s Oktoberfest season and September is declared as German-American month culminating in the famous Steuben Parade which will march up 5th Avenue in New York City for the 62nd time this year.

Während wir dieses geschichtsträchtige Datum feiern, das den Kalten Krieg beendete und Europa umgestaltete, erheben sich leider weltweit an vielen Orten symbolische und wirkliche Mauern. Mit unserem Magazin HEIMAT abroad wollen wir wie immer einen kleinen Beitrag leisten die Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft zu unterstützen. In dieser Ausgabe wollen wir uns jedoch auf die positiven Effekte des Mauerfalls konzentrieren und feiern. Wir freuen uns, dass die deutsche Botschafterin in den USA, Emily Haber, in unserem Gastkommentar auf Seite 7 zu Wort kommt. Mit dem 30. Jahrestag des Berliner Mauerfalls endet auch das Deutschlandjahr „Wunderbar together“. Diesen Herbst finden im ganzen Land noch zahlreiche Veranstaltungen wie Konzerte, Vorträge und Ausstellungen statt. Wir haben einige der Highlights auf Seite 14/15 aufgelistet. ►► Was hat diese Ausgabe noch alles zu bieten? Deutschland ist innovationstechnisch am Puls der Zeit. Lese über das “Year of AI in Germany” und den Gewinn des Hyperloop Wettbewerbs der TU München in unserem Wirtschaftsteil. Weiterhin hatten wir die Gelegenheit, Niki Wente, eine Winzerin mit deutscher Herkunft in 5. Generation, in Kalifornien zu interviewen. Niki wird dieses Jahr auch Wein-Host auf einer AmaWaterways Flusskreuzfahrt sein, die auch unsere Herausgeberin Gabi Hegan in diesem Sommer miterleben durfte. Ihren Reisebericht findet ihr auf Seite 26/27. Und zu guter letzt – es ist die Oktoberfest-Saison! Im September wird ja bekanntlich der “German-American Month“ in den USA gefeiert, der mit der berühmten Steuben-Parade, die dieses Jahr zum 62. Mal die 5th Avenue in New York City hinaufmarschiert, einen Höhepunkt findet.

Living between two worlds Every summer, I am very lucky to be able to spend 6 weeks in Europe. I spend most of that time in Germany near Munich with my family and friends. It is so interesting to me that even after 20 years of living in the U.S., I slip right back into my old German life and my German identity, almost as if I've never left. During that time, I hardly think about New York and I don’t miss it. Nothing. Nada. Nichts. Not even my daily Chai Latte at Starbucks which I’m glad to find out is just a costly habit and not an addiction. The older I get, the more I catch myself evaluating what it would mean to move back “home” for good and what it would mean for the rest of my life. What would I do? Where would I live? Would my friends still take time to see me as much? Feeling equally at home in two cultures allows me to see many things from a different perspective. I can appreciate the positive effects of the perceived American “superficiality” and although I sometimes get annoyed by the German negativity or skill called “Jammern auf hohem Niveau” (complaining on a high level), I still belong here. It’s home. It’s HEIMAT. However, the moment I’m sitting in a cab after 6 weeks with family, friends, beer gardens, and delicious food, and I see the skyline of Manhattan appear in front of me, I know New York is “home” as well. That’s where I worked so hard to become a part of, that’s where I found my niche, where I built my family and my company. That’s where I belong as well. The peculiar thing is that sometimes I feel as if I'm living two parallel lives I'm switching in and out of. My personal narrative goes on in both worlds while I’m physically going back and forth. I would be

curious if any of my readers can relate? I’d be even more curious how immigrants must have felt before air travel, before phones, and before the internet. A good-bye often meant good-bye forever, but their HEIMAT and identity was still the same. They brought their values, customs, and skills with them, which German-American communities across the country still uphold. Many famous Americans have German roots and are highly revered to this day. Nevertheless, there is also a “new” German-American community of people who arrived in the past few decades and are leaving their mark. They may be less connected with the old-world German culture, but they contribute equally to society in many different fields. At HEIMAT abroad we like to find the right mix reporting on long-standing traditions as well as current topics and explore transatlantic relationships. For me personally, the exciting part and the challenge of a global lifestyle is that I never feel 100% at home in either world. American culture is a part of me as much as German culture. It would break my heart if I had to decide for one or the other. Luckily, publishing HEIMAT abroad gives me the perfect platform to explore and report on both cultures, history, transatlantic relationships, business news, travel tips and events. I’m learning something new everyday and I’m excited to take you along on my journey. Grüße aus New York,

PUBLISHER Gabi Hegan is originally from Munich and spent her “first” career in the hotel industry. After her daughter was born in 2009 she founded the NYC based community website www.citykinder.com and in 2017 the annual ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR. In 2018, she launched the new platform www.heimatabroad.com to reach and support German-speaking expats and residents nationwide. CO-PUBLISHER Petra Schurmann studied in Heidelberg before working for Bertelsmann AG in Germany and in California. In 2000, Petra and the journalist Alexander Hast founded the website www.german-world.com in L.A. to promote German culture in the U.S. In 2003, they added the bilingual print publication "German World Magazine". Since 2013, Petra has also been involved in the annual film festival "German Currents", and has been a supporter of the multi-language preschool "Kigala" as well as the Goethe-International Charter School in L.A. and the Steuben Parade in New York.

EDITOR Sarah Conlon grew up near Leipzig and calls sunny Southern Palatinate her adopted home. She has lived in New Zealand and Norway, and chose Boston as her second home in December 2017, where she now lives with her husband. After completing her Master’s degree in American Literature, Media, and Communication at the University of Mannheim, she lived in Connecticut as a journalist for 8 months to write for Das Pfalz Magazin from a small house on a lake. CONTENT Ramona was born and raised in Berlin, Germany. After graduating High School she finally got the chance to travel to her dream destination – New York City. Little did she know New York would soon become more than a travel destination. After nearly 2 years as Au Pair in New York, she studied TV-Journalism, which she graduated from in 2017 in Berlin. After working in PR and Sales in Germany, she now enjoys her new life in Brooklyn, New York as volunteer for HEIMAT abroad, and wife.

DESIGN Conny Gaertner is originally from Dresden, Germany, where she had established her own graphic design and photography business. One of her big dreams was always living abroad, so when the opportunity arose she followed her husband to Bridgewater, New Jersey. While getting settled in the U.S., Conny enjoyed spending time with her 2 kids as a stay-at-home mum for a while. Now she is happy to use her creativity again as the lead designer for HEIMAT abroad Magazine and other mostly German clients in the U.S.

DESIGN Anna-Maria Furlong was born and raised in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and studied architecture/graphic design in Munich. After moving to the U.S. in 1988, she left her “prints” behind in Arizona, Washington, D.C., Nebraska and Missouri. Since 1998 she has called the south-western Texan desert her home. 30 Years After the Fall of the Berlin Wall On September 21 of this year, the colorful and boisterous Steuben Parade will make its way up Manhattan's iconic Fifth Avenue for the 62nd time. Founded in 1957, by German immigrants and German-Americans, it is the largest celebration of its kind in the United States. This year, I have the honor of serving as Grand Marshal. I follow in the footsteps of generations of Germans and Americans dedicated to commemorating the unique and special friendship between our two countries, a friendship that has transcended political differences and a globalized world that has changed dramatically over the past six decades. One of the most momentous events over this span of time has been the Fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. And in terms of dramatic change, it was completely inconceivable to many that this would ever come about. And yet, February 5 of last year marked the point at which the wall had been down as long as it had been in place – 10,316 days, to be exact. During this time, the wall exacted a terrible toll. While the exact number of casualties is unknown, it is estimated that 262 people died at the Berlin Wall, many of whom were shot by East German border guards as they attempted to cross to freedom. The 870-mile internal German border claimed yet more lives. Contrast this with the raucous celebrations of the evening of November 9, 1989, in what quickly became one of the largest and most joyous street parties the world had ever seen. By the time SED Party official Günter Schabowski made his now infamous statement that evening where he rifled through his notes and stammered that he thought that restrictions on travel across the border should be lifted “without delay,” many people had displayed the courage and fortitude to challenge the status quo and the brick-and-mortar scar on Berlin's psyche. President Reagan's famous “Tear down this wall!” speech from June 1987 finally led to action. Whereas the physical destruction of the wall began hours after Schabowski's announcement – the world remembers ordinary Berliners smashing the wall with hammers and whatever other tools they could get their hands on – the psychological and economic effects of the division lasted much longer and in some cases persist to this day. Those who remember the wall as it once stood may find it curious that segments of it are carefully preserved today and little pieces of it sold as souvenirs. And yet it is important that it is preserved in this way so that future generations who will have no personal memory of the wall as it once existed are able to learn about the Cold War, the division of Germany, and the help of the U.S. to overcome it. “It was the Americans who made German unity possible and we will never forget that,” Foreign Minister Maas pointed out in a speech in Washington last year.

Emily Margarethe Haber ... has been German Ambassador to the United States since June 2018. Immediately prior to this, Emily Haber, a career foreign service officer, was deployed to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, serving as State Secretary overseeing security and migration at the height of the refugee crisis in Europe. In this capacity, she worked closely with the U.S. administration on topics ranging from the fight against international terrorism to global cyberattacks and cybersecurity. In 2009, she was appointed Political Director and, in 2011, State Secretary at the Foreign Office, the first woman to hold either post.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the wall, and there are many people who are able to tell us first-hand accounts of that fateful and dramatic day. Some of these are stories of the same German-American friendship that the Steuben Parade celebrates. All these stories are not only a significant memory; they are also a motivation for me and many others to stand up for freedom and the friendship between our two countries. The transatlantic relationship is solid today, supported by years of close cooperation. Germany and the U.S. will once again celebrate the fall of the wall, 30 years after that fateful day that changed Germany forever.

locations they took place to make the historic events even more accessible to visitors.

How Berlin recreates the history of the Fall of the Berlin Wall for its residents and visitors

Discussions, movies, and readings will be among many other events held in the city. This way the organizers want to make sure that every visitor can participate or simply watch and listen depending on what they are looking for.

Berlin, the formerly divided capital of Germany, is going to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the peaceful revolution that evidently led to the Fall of the Berlin Wall, with a seven day recreation of historic events. Over 100 different events will be offered during a seven day period taking place at seven historically significant locations throughout the city. The press release by organizer Kulturprojekte Berlin explains that the events will take place November 4th-10th and will offer a diverse mix of art installations, exhibitions and other events that will recreate the “Route of Revolution”.

But not only movies will help recreate the events , music will also play a big part in this year‘s celebration, especially music that was meaningful for the revolution as well as representing the new beginning for the now reunited city. Even though no specific names were released yet, Kulturprojekte Berlin promised that nationally and internationally well known artists will be performing on stages all over the city. Does that mean we can look forward to another performance of David Hasselhoff at the Brandenburg Gate? Well, it seems like we will have to wait and see about that one.

At this anniversary the organizers want to highlight the people leading the revolution. Working with contemporary activists and witnesses, they will share how they experienced the time around 1989/90 and hopefully give visitors a chance to get a feeling for the time. Movies and pictures will be shown at historically relevant places like Bornholmer Straße, where the first people crossed the checkpoint on November 9th or at Alexanderplatz where people protested against the Socialist Unity Party (SED) on November 4th 1989. The focus this year will be to recreate events at the original

The big finale will be on November 9th, of course. The „highlight“ according to the press release of the organizer Kulturprojekte Berlin will be a big music festival held throughout the entire city. At the end - no specific time known as of yet - all artists will perform the same song as a musical reunification of the city 30 years later. It is yet to be announced which song will get the honor to represent this year‘s reunification celebration.

30 JAHRE FRIEDLICHE REVOLUTION – EINE STADT FEIERT Wie Berlin Besucher und Bürger den Mauerfall wiedererleben lässt

Berlin, die einst geteilte Stadt, wird dieses Jahr zum 30-jährigen Jubiläum des Mauerfalls seinen Bürgern und Besuchern die Möglichkeit bieten eine Woche lang die „friedliche Revolution“, die letztendlich zum Mauerfall führte, noch einmal zu erleben. Sieben Tage lang wird es an sieben, für die Revolution entscheidenden Orten in der Stadt, über 100 verschiedene Veranstaltungen geben. Wie die Presseerklärung von Kulturprojekte Berlin erklärt, soll vom 4. bis 10. November mit Installationen, Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen die „Route der Revolution“ nachgestellt werden. Es sollen vor allem auch die Menschen, die Gesichter hinter der Revolution gefeiert werden. Zeitzeugen sollen von ihren Erlebnissen in der Zeit um 1989/90 erzählen, sie greifbar machen für die Besucher der Veranstaltungen. Mit Filmen und Bildern, projiziert an den jeweiligen Orten, wie der Bornholmer Straße oder am Alexanderplatz sollen die Besucher die Möglichkeit haben sich in die Zeit zurückversetzt zu fühlen, die Geschehnisse noch einmal an Ort und Stelle erleben, sie sehen, hören und fühlen können.

Egal ob Podiumsdiskussion, Film oder Lesung für jeden wird etwas dabei sein. Jeder kann also mitmachen oder einfach nur zusehen oder zuhören. Nicht nur durch Filme wird die Zeit noch einmal rekonstruiert, auch mit Musik, die zur Geschichte beigetragen hat oder die für den Neuanfang steht, wird in dieser Woche zurückgedacht. Genaue Namen wurden noch nicht veröffentlicht, wohl aber dass „namhafte nationale und internationale Künstler*innen“ auftreten werden. Ob man also davon ausgehen kann, dass David Hasselhoff seinen wohl einzigen musikalischen Deutschlanderfolg „I´ve been looking for freedom“ am Brandenburger Tor performen wird? Da müssen wir uns wohl überraschen lassen. Das große Finale steigt dann am, wie sollte es anders sein, 9. November. Der „Höhepunkt“ wie es in der Presseerklärung heißt, wird ein Musikfestival sein, das sich durch die komplette Stadt zieht. Als Abschluss soll dann auf allen Bühnen der Stadt gleichzeitig das selbe Lied erklingen, sodass die Stadt noch einmal vereint wird – diesmal mit Hilfe der Musik. Um welches Stück es sich dabei handelt bleibt noch geheim, aber für Musikfans aller Richtungen wird in dieser Woche etwas dabei sein. Ramona McEvoy

CELEBRATING THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL IN CALIFORNIA The Wende Museum in LA commemorates the 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall The 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall is not only reason for Germany to celebrate but is also an important day at the Wende Museum in Culver City, California. The museum’s main focus is representing and preserving art and historic artefacts of the Soviet bloc countries which were signiﬁcant for the Fall of the Berlin Wall and evidently led to the so-called “Wende”. November 9, 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and will be celebrated with several weeks of celebration starting October 2nd when the German Consulate in LA will celebrate the Day of Unity hosted at the Wende Museum one day before the actual holiday. The celebratory events will culminate in “a major event on November 9th”, as Jessica Hoffman from the museum told us in an interview. One highlight of that event will be the opening of the new exhibition “The Medea Insurrection: Radical Women Artists Behind the Iron Curtain” which focuses on female artists from eastern Europe as well as East Germany. The main goal of this exhibition is to show the importance these women and their art played in countercultures of their countries. The museum hereby wants to correct the historical misinterpretation of the signiﬁcant contribution of the women and their art, which until now had been minimized. “Several artists […] will speak at the November 9 event about their experiences in East Germany and other Eastern Bloc countries”. Further information on events commemorating the Fall of the Berlin Wall as well as who will speak at the event is yet to be announced, since the planning is still in progress. The Wende Museum has hosted commemorative events in the past. Ten years ago, for the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, ten wall segments were moved to Wilshire Boulevard, one of 10 | HEIMAT abroad | FALL 2019

the main streets connecting East and West Los Angeles, and placed in front of the Variety Building, were they can be visited to this day. As a symbolic gesture they built replicas of the real wall pieces that blocked the Boulevard to symbolize the separation of East and West Los Angeles and later that day teared down these replicas. The pieces are of major relevance to many people. As Jessica Hoffman told us, “they have become a popular site for photographs as well as for protest, whether it is newlywed Korean couples taking photos against the backdrop of the wall in hopes for a reuniﬁed Korea or (others) protesting division and human-rights abuses”. Pieces of the Berlin Wall are symbols of hope, which have been sent all over the world after the fall. Now that governments want to build new walls, it is of uttermost importance to use a day like this years anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall as a reminder to work and stand together for the importance of tearing down existing walls separating countries, separating families. Since 1992 Dresen has been working as an independent author and director. He is a member of the Academy of Arts Berlin, the European Film Academy and a founding member of the German Film Academy. GUNDERMANN tells the story of a digger driver who writes songs. He is a poet, a clown, an idealist. He dreams and hopes, loves and struggles. He’s a spy who gets spied on, a do-gooder who doesn’t know better. He is torn. GUNDERMANN is both a music film and a love story; a drama about guilt and entanglement, about suppression and confrontation. GUNDERMANN is a film about the homeland. It takes a new look back at the GDR, a country that has disappeared. In GUNDERMANN, director Andreas Dresen looks at the life of Gerhard “Gundi” Gundermann – one of the most formative music artists of East Germany – with sensibility, affection, and humor. Gundermann, a hard worker and musician at heart, died in 1998, at the age of 43. The screenplay is written by Laila Stieler. The leading role is played by Alexander Scheer, who sang all the songs in the film himself. Who is Ursula von der Leyen, the new president of the European Commission? Former German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, a member of Merkel‘s conservatives, has been confirmed as president-elect of the EU Commission. But just who is she? Deutsche Welle profiled the Brussels-born doctor and her time in Berlin. The Christian Democrat (CDU), who was introduced to the Berlin political stage by Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2005 — and who was once briefly treated as a potential successor to Merkel — has been confirmed head of the European Commission, making her the Commission‘s first ever female chief.

Ministerial posts Initially, the mother of seven held the post of family minister, between 2005 and 2009. With her sometimes unconventional style, she sent clear signals to the political establishment in Berlin. She initiated, for example, a parental assistance program („Elterngeld“) and oversaw a nationwide expansion of childcare by providing substantial ﬁnancial support from the German government. In 2009, then serving in Merkel‘s second Cabinet, von der Leyen, a trained physician, became health minister. In December 2013, she switched to the Ministry of Defense. She remained in charge even after the complicated government formation process in the wake of the 2017 federal elections.

Mover and shaker As defense minister, von der Leyen quickly tackled the armed forces‘ problems one by one. The Bundeswehr was, and still is, afflicted by outdated and defective equipment, ill-conceived arms projects and a severe shortage of experts. By applying a lot of political pressure and by speaking out in public on behalf of the Bundeswehr, she achieved an increase in the defense budget — albeit still well short of NATO‘s spending targets. And under the under the heading ‘personnel revision / re-orientation’, the first female German defense minister stopped the downsizing of the armed forces, bolstering troop numbers for the first time since the end of the Cold War, scrapping Germany‘s fixed cap of 185,000 troops. Under her tenure, defense policy became a recognizable element of Germany‘s foreign policy. This was also in line with international efforts to fight the „Islamic State“ terror militia, which has seen contributions by the German armed forces in several spheres. “We‘d left behind a period during which the Bundeswehr had been downsized for a long time,“ von der Leyen said in 2017. “The security situation has changed to the effect that the Bundeswehr has to deal with a vast number of challenges, ranging from Syria and Iraq to Mali and the entire mission in the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, the troops have to cope with refugee relief and protection of the eastern 16 | HEIMAT abroad | FALL 2019

border. At the same time, the Bundeswehr and I managed, in a concerted effort, to literally ‘turn the tanker around’-there where direction changes in the areas of in the areas of equipment, personnel, and ﬁnances.“ Von der Leyen announced shortly before her conﬁrmation as president of the EU Commission that she would step down as German defense minister, regardless of the result in the July 16 vote.

Creative Commons

Slip-ups and scandals Von der Leyen‘s reputation as the woman who gets things done has suffered in recent years. This is due to a number of personnel decisions, but also to a number of scandals. During her tenure, too, major arms projects were delayed, and simultaneously right-wing extremist activities in the armed forces and humiliating practices affecting new recruits came to light. Von der Leyen explicitly distanced herself from the armed forces. Claiming that the Bundeswehr was affected by an “attitude problem“ hurt her image among the troops. More recently, she was floundering over the question whether the naval training ship “Gorch Fock“ still has a future despite skyrocketing cost overruns in restoration work. And gradually it has been coming to light that a deputy minister employed by von der Leyen took a number of liberties, for example hiring a small army of expensive advisers at her own discretion.

More European military cooperation, more defense spending Blemishes like these had taken some of the shine off von der Leyen‘s once impeccable reputation in Berlin in recent months and years. “A European army as a long-term goal and NATO are not opposites but, to me, two sides of the same coin, because it‘s important that the Europeans make up a strong pillar within NATO, not just in order to uphold NATO‘s credibility but also to have a strong European voice,“ she said. Aber wer ist sie genau? Deutsche Welle berichtet über die in Brüssel geborene Ärztin und ihre Zeit in Berlin. Die Christdemokratin (CDU), die 2005 von Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel in die politische Szene Berlins eingeführt wurde und die kurzzeitig sogar als potenzielle Nachfolgerin von Merkel galt, wurde zur ersten weiblichen Europäischen Kommissionspräsidentin ernannt.

Ministerposten Die siebenfache Mutter hielt von 2005 bis 2009 zunächst das Amt der Familienministerin inne. Mit ihrem manchmal etwas unkonventionellen Stil sandte sie deutliche Signale an das politische Establishment in Berlin. Unter dem Motto “Personalwende” hat die erste deutsche Verteidigungsministerin den Abbau der Streitkräfte gestoppt und zum ersten Mal seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges die Truppenzahlen gestärkt und damit die deutsche Obergrenze von 185.000 Soldaten abgeschafft. Während ihrer Amtszeit wurde die Verteidigungspolitik zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil der deutschen Außenpolitik. Dies stand auch im Einklang mit den internationalen Bemühungen zur Bekämpfung der Terror-Miliz „Islamischer Staat“, zu der die deutschen Streitkräfte in mehreren Bereichen wertvolle Beiträge geleistet haben. „Wir haben die Zeit hinter uns gelassen, in der die Bundeswehr lange Zeit verkleinert worden war”, sagte von der Leyen im Jahr 2017.

„Die Sicherheitslage hat sich dahingehend geändert, dass die Bundeswehr nun mit einer Vielzahl von Herausforderungen fertig werden muss, von Syrien über den Irak bis nach Mali und die gesamte Situation im Mittelmeer. Außerdem müssen sich die Truppen mit Flüchtlingshilfe und dem Schutz der Ostgrenze beschäftigen. Gleichzeitig haben die Bundeswehr und ich es geschafft, gemeinsam “den Tanker sozusagen umzudrehen” – es gab Richtungsänderungen in den Bereichen Ausrüstung, Personal und Finanzen.” Von der Leyen gab kurz vor ihrer Bestätigung als Präsidentin der EU-Kommission bekannt, dass sie unabhängig vom Ergebnis der Abstimmung am 16. Juli als deutsche Verteidigungsministerin zurücktreten würde.

Ausrutscher und Skandale Von der Leyens Ruf als eine Frau, die Dinge zielstrebig durchsetzt, hat in den letzten Jahren gelitten. Das ist auf eine Reihe von Personalentscheidungen, aber auch auf einige Skandale zurückzuführen. Während ihrer Amtszeit verzögerten sich größere Rüstungsprojekte, und gleichzeitig wurden rechtsextremistische Aktivitäten in den Streitkräften sowie demütigende Praktiken, die neue Rekruten betreffen, ans Licht gebracht. Von der Leyen distanzierte sich dahingehend ausdrücklich von den Streitkräften. Die Behauptung, die Bundeswehr sei von einem „Haltungsproblem” betroffen, schadete ihrem Image unter den Truppen. Außerdem druckste sie bei der Frage herum, ob das Marine-Ausbildungsschiff “Gorch Fock” trotz sprunghafter Kostenüberschreitungen der Restaurierungsarbeiten überhaupt noch eine Zukunft habe. Weiterhin stellte sich heraus, dass ein stellvertretender Minister, der von ihr eingestellt wurde, sich eine Reihe von Freiheiten herausnahm; er heuerte zum Beispiel eine kleine Armee teurer Berater nach eigenem Ermessen an.

Mehr europäische militärische Zusammenarbeit, mehr Verteidigungsausgaben Solche „Schönheitsfehler” hatten von der Leyens einst tadellosen Ruf in Berlin in den letzten Monaten und Jahren leicht angekratzt. „Eine europäische Armee als langfristiges Ziel und die NATO selbst sind für mich keine Gegensätze, sondern zwei Seiten derselben Medaille, denn es ist wichtig, dass die Europäer eine starke Einheit innerhalb der NATO bilden, nicht nur, um die Glaubwürdigkeit der NATO aufrechtzuerhalten, sondern auch, um eine starke europäische Stimme zu haben”, sagte sie. Auf die Forderung von US-Präsident Donald Trump nach einem stärkeren militärischen Engagement Deutschlands und Europas hin sagte sie: „Meiner Meinung nach ist das eine faire Forderung.”

2019: The Year of AI in Germany

The term “Artificial Intelligence” gets thrown around often in 2019, but few who use it mean the same thing. Referring simply to computers that process large amounts of data and make their own decisions about that data, AI is quickly becoming commonplace. From predictive texting to chatbots and voice assistants, AI is already part of your life.

Beyond the personal, AI is changing industry, medicine and transportation and ushering in new concerns about cybersecurity and ethics. In Germany, AI development is well underway. Through government support and the entrepreneurial and academic ingenuity of its citizens and residents, Germany is proving itself a global AI leader. Beginning with a closed-door experts meeting convened in May 2018, Chancellor Angela Merkel has made AI a priority for her administration. In November 2018 three of Germany’s federal ministries finalized the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. Intending to increase Germany’s competitiveness in AI and ensure the technology serves society, the strategy committed a collective €3 billion to AI-related research and development by 2025. Particular focus was placed on the integration of policy and research with industry, pledging support to the German Mittelstand, or SMEs, as they incorporate AI with their work. Germany is also home to some of Europe’s most distinguished AI research centers. Taking its cue from Silicon Valley, a consortium of universities in southwest Germany created Cyber Valley in 2016, a collection of industrial and academic institutions aiming to accelerate the development and commercialization of AI. Cyber Valley partners include Amazon, which established an AI Research Center near the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen, and Google, an industry partner of The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). West of Cyber Valley, Facebook committed $7.5 million to the Technical University of Munich’s AI Ethics Research Center. Each year the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research hosts the Wissenschaftsjahr, or Year of Science, and in 2019 the focus topic was Artificial Intelligence. The Wissenschaftsjahr brings together organizations across science, academia and industry to engage with the public, bridging the divide between science and society. Across Germany this year, Wissenschaftsjahr events have encouraged dialogue through panel discussions, working groups and even an educational exhibit on board a traveling ship. AI is also the annual topic of the five German Centers for Research and Innovation (DWIH) worldwide. The DWIH exists to promote German science and research globally and to encourage transnational collaboration on solving questions of the future. On November 18 in Brooklyn, the DWIH New York will host its first multi-day conference, the DWIH Future Forum, which, in 2019, will focus on demystifying AI. Bringing together AI

NEW HYPERLOOP WORLD RECORD Team Munich garners its fourth victory in fourth race Once again, the students of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) won this year’s Hyperloop competition in Los Angeles – the fourth win in a row. At a top speed of 482 km/h, the TUM Hyperloop surpassed the speed of all other pods: At 160 miles per hour (257.5 km/h), the Swissloop team of ETH Zurich came in far behind. The EPFLoop team of the EPFL in Lausanne (Switzerland) reached 148 miles per hour (238 km/h). The Hyperloop is a new way of transport that could revolutionize intercity travel, making a trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco as short as 36 min or from Munich to Berlin as short as 30 minutes. A Hyperloop is designed to cover long distances sustainably and extremely quickly. A high-speed train equipped with a high speed sound absorber would travel in a tube in which there is almost a complete vacuum. The reduced air resistance allows the capsule inside the tube to reach speeds of more than 1000 km/h. In order to get students from all over the world enthusiastic about Hyperloop technology and to use their creative potential for the development of this new transport system, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk introduced the idea of a Hyperloop Concept in 2013. Since 2015, international student engineering teams have been invited to build Hyperloop prototypes and to participate in the annual “Hyperloop Pod Competition.” There, the latest developments of the top participants are demonstrated and tested in a 1.2-kilometer-long vacuum tube on the premises of SpaceX in Los Angeles. In Munich, the Hyperloop initiative began in 2017 and has been part of a larger student organization, the WARR. Since the Hyperloop project has consistently increased in size, it was decided to separate the project from the WARR. Members from the third WARR Hyperloop team founded a new student organization called “NEXT Prototypes” focused on building prototypes and participating in student competitions. It’s only focus now is the project “TUM Hyperloop”.

The team from Munich has participated in all competitions organized by SpaceX since 2017 and they won the four of them, each year being able to increase the top speed and overall performance. To mark this amazing achievement this, the German-American Business Association (GABA) in Southern California, who followed the trajectory, helped organize a post competition event (photos top right and below) which allowed the victorious team from Munich to celebrate their win and reflect on the points of improvement.. During the competition week, the Hyperloop pods had to pass some 100 tests. „We passed all tests successfully, but not all at the ﬁrst attempt,“ says TUM team manager Toni Jukic. ”Components failed and part of the software had to be rewritten. But, in many night shifts they ultimately managed to solve all problems.” And the students have set their sights on yet another ambitious goal: They‘re no longer concentrating on speed alone. The Research Team, consisting of 15 students, is researching the concept of the Hyperloop in terms of viability, sustainability and cost-efﬁciency. NIKI WENTE We had the opportunity to speak to Niki Wente, the viticultural manager and upcoming wine host of a AmaWaterways cruise. Wente Vineyards is the country’s longest, continuously operated family-owned winery in the United States, founded in 1883. Today, the winery is owned and managed by the fourth and fifth generations of the Wente family. Blending traditional and innovative winemaking practices, the winery draws from nearly 3,000 acres of sustainably farmed estate vineyards. Located just East of San Francisco in the historic Livermore Valley, Wente Vineyards is recognized as one of California’s premier wine country destinations. Wente Vineyards has many female leaders across the company, working in management, wine tasting rooms, hospitality, winemaking and more. Carolyn Wente is currently the CEO and a 4th generation leader of the Wente family. Her nieces, Christine, Jordan, Niki and Aly Wente are all 5th generation of winegrowers and serve in leadership roles throughout the company. Finally, Amy Hoopes serves as the current president of Wente Family Estates.

Your family history in the U.S. dates back to 1883 when Carl H. Wente, a German immigrant, arrived in Livermore, purchased 48 acres of land and established the Wente winery. How much do you know about Carl Wente? Where was he from and was he a winemaker back in Germany before he purchased the vineyard? Carl arrived in the United States in 1881, from a village called Emren in Lower Saxony where the Wente family raised livestock and were no vintners . He was the second son of his father’s second marriage. Carl had two half-brothers from his father’s first marriage who immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1850’s when he was still young. Carl came to the U.S. looking for his two half-brothers when he was 30, only to discover they had passed away years before. He decided to continue his journey and ended up in California. Carl moved to Livermore in 1883, taking a job as resident manager and became a 50% owner of the vineyard. Is your family still connected to their German roots? Do you have any family reci22 | HEIMAT abroad | FALL 2019

pes or celebrate any traditions? My Uncle Eric is still in touch with the Wente’s in the same region who are descendants of Carl’s brothers. We have very simple traditions which are focused on family gatherings and wine, but it is the strong sense of family that Carl passed down, allowing us all to share equitably which I believe is the reason we’re still here. The work ethic of the family is similar throughout. We all are quite disciplined and have very long full days in our industry which is at its core, agricultural. The Wente family is known for its significant work with Chardonnay and all your vineyards are “Certified California Sustainable”. Can you explain what that means and why this is important for you? Being certified sustainable is so important to us because we have been raised with the ideals of building a business and community, that will not only be here for the next generation but will be better for the next generation. We want to create an environment where continuous improvement is encouraged and we want to protect the land at the

same time. These are the principles that the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance follows. The certification for vineyards and wineries was formalized in 2010 and our winery was one of the pilot wineries credited for helping get the program codified. You grew up in the vineyards and knew you wanted to be in the family business when you were about 13 years old. Can you tell us about the moment when you knew you wanted to be in the wine industry? Did you have an epiphany? I have always idolized my father; he has been such an incredible role model for me since I was a little girl. Watching him work the land and hearing his passion for the vineyards and our business could make anyone passionate about this line of work – his enthusiasm is seriously infectious! When I understood that in this line of work I would be able to be outdoors most of the time, that’s when it really clicked together for me. I had my first internship when I was 14 years old, shadowing our viticultural manager, and I absolutely loved every part of it! From that point forward I

Wente Vineyards wurde 1883 gegründet und ist das älteste Weingut der Vereinigten Staaten, das seither durchgehend im Familienbesitz ist. Heute gehört das Weingut bereits der vierten und fünften Generation der Wente Familie und wird auch weiterhin von ihr betrieben. Mit traditionellen und innovativen Methoden wird auf etwas mehr als 1200 Hektar nachhaltig angebaut. Östlich von San Francisco, im historischen Livermore Valley gelegen, ist das Wente Weingut eines der beliebtesten Ziele in Kalifornien für anspruchsvolle Weinliebhaber. Das Wente Weingut hat viele Frauen in der Führungsetage, die in den Bereichen Management, Weinproduktion und -proben, sowie im Hospitality Bereich tätig sind. Carolyn Wente ist Geschäftsführerin und führt die vierte Generation der Wente Familie. Ihre Nichten, Christine, Jordan, Niki und Aly gehören zur fünften Generation der Familie und haben bereits eigene Führungspositionen inne. Deine Familiengeschichte in den Vereinigten Staaten reicht bis in das Jahr 1883 zurück, als Carl H. Wente, ein deutscher Einwanderer, in Livermore ankam, fast 20 Hektar Land kaufte und daraufhin das Wente Weingut etablierte. Wie viel weißt du über Carl Wente? Woher kam er und war er bereits in Deutschland Winzer? Carl kam im Jahr 1881 aus einem Dorf in Niedersachsen namens Emren in die Vereinigten Staaten. Die Wente Familie besaß Nutztiere, aber baute keinen Wein an. Er war der zweite Sohn aus der zweiten Ehe seines Vaters. Carl hatte zwei Halbbrüder aus dessen erster Ehe, die bereits in den 1850er Jahren in die Vereinigten Staaten auswanderten. Als er 30 Jahre alt war, reiste Carl in die Vereinigten Staaten, um nach seinen Halbbrüdern zu suchen und erfuhr bald, dass beide leider schon vor Jahren verstorben waren. Er blieb in den Staaten und fand sich bald in Kalifornien wieder. 1883 zog Carl dann nach Livermore und nahm einen Job als Geschäftsführer des Bernard Weinguts an und besaß damit 50% des Anwesens.

Ist deine Familie noch mit den deutschen Wurzeln verbunden? Habt ihr Familienrezepte oder pflegt ihr noch gewisse Traditionen? Mein Onkel Eric ist noch in Kontakt mit den Wentes aus der Region, die Nachfahren von Carls Brüdern sind. Wir haben eher einfache Traditionen, die sich vor allem um das Zusammenkommen als Familie und natürlich um Wein drehen, aber es ist der starke Sinn für Familie, den uns Carl auf jeden Fall hinterlassen hat und der uns ermöglicht, alles gleichwertig aufzuteilen. Ich glaube, das ist der Grund, warum wir immer noch hier sind. Die Arbeitsmoral ist bei uns allen sehr ähnlich. Wir sind alle sehr diszipliniert und arbeiten lange und hart in unserer Industrie, die ja im Endeffekt Landwirtschaft ist. Die Wente Familie ist vor allem für Ihren Chardonnay bekannt und alle Weingutanlagen sind „Certified California Sustainable“. Kannst du erklären was das bedeutet und warum das für euch wichtig ist? knew this is what I wanted to do, and since then my love for this industry and for farming has only gotten stronger! Seeing the quality come from the soil to the fruit and eventually in the wine is something so special to me. Wente Vineyards is the country's oldest, continuously operated family-owned winery and has a strong female leadership. Have the women in your family always been involved in the business? I am sure that my great-grandma Barbara helped out in the early days as it was only she and her husband Carl who ran things. She then had nine children, of whom seven survived, and that alone is a big job. When Ernest and Herman took over, both their wives Bess and Edith had college degrees, in chemistry and biology respectively, and worked prior to marriage. After the prohibition, Bess, who had been a chemistry teacher, did all the lab analysis for the winery, and Edith did most of the hospitality and PR for the winery. My grandmother Jean was also involved in hospitality as well as serving on the Board of Directors for a number of years. My aunt Carolyn started in hospitality, marketing and sales and is now the CEO! Do you feel like there are more women entering the business these days? If not, what could be done to get more young women interested in winemaking? Absolutely! I studied wine and viticulture at the California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo and more than 1/3 of the students in my class were female. I think that publications focusing on female leaders in the wine industry have certainly helped to normalize the position, opening 24 | HEIMAT abroad | FALL 2019

the door for increased interest and opportunity among women across the U.S. Wente Vineyards also runs tasting rooms and restaurants and is famous for its concerts. Is it important for a vineyard today to offer experiences as well as outstanding products for lasting success? Absolutely! Consumers are looking for a way to bond with brands and the easiest way for a brand to create that bond is through a memorable experience paired with a delicious product. On your website, it says “In addition to Niki’s role as viticulturist, you will also find her rescuing animals from the vineyards.” Can you tell us more about this? What do you like to do when you are not working? I think they are talking me up a bit more than I deserve on that one! I love animals and have been known to rescue dogs and rehome them within my family. Currently, my cousin has two dogs, my parents have one dog and my husband and I have one dog that I rescued from various shelters and, in my cousin’s case, on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. I also rescued two adolescent kestrels from the vineyard and rehomed them with a local falconer that trains the birds to aid in pest abatement. Oftentimes, female kestrels will push their male siblings out of the nest before they can fly, causing death in most cases. I found these birds in the middle of the road in our vineyard and I was able to get them rehomed. In general, I spend most of my time off being active with my friends, family and of course my dog. I love to hike, bike, ski, horseback ride – anything outdoors.

Also, what exactly is the difference between a viticulturist and a winemaker? A viticulturist has the task of cultivating the soil, managing growth in the vineyards, and enhancing the quality of the crop. A winemaker has the task of taking that crop and crafting it into wine. It’s a symbiotic partnership, and the two roles often work together to create the highest quality products (and in some cases one person is responsible for both roles!). Can you tell us more about your cooperation with AmaWaterways Wine Cruises? When did you become a wine host and what do you like about it? This is my first year as a host with AmaWaterways! I am incredibly honored to have the opportunity and am very excited for my first trip to Bordeaux. Through testing for the Certified Specialist of Wine with the Society of Wine Educators, I have studied almost all the major wine regions of the world, but I have not yet had the opportunity to visit most regions! Wente Family Estates has worked with the cruise company in the past, but I was not involved in that relationship. As this is your first time as a wine host on AmaWaterways, what are you looking forward to? I am very much looking forward to all the planned excursions as well as the sessions I will be leading on board the ship to show off some of my favorite wines from the Wente Vineyards’ portfolio. Die Zertifizierung für Weingutanlagen wurde 2010 offiziell eingeführt und unser Weingut war eines der ersten, das dazu beigetragen hat, die Kriterien festzulegen. Du bist auf dem Weingut aufgewachsen und wusstest bereits mit 13 Jahren, dass du im Familienunternehmen arbeiten möchtest. Kannst du uns von dem Moment erzählen, in dem du wusstest, dass du später auch im Weingeschäft tätig sein willst? Gab es da ein bestimmtes Ereignis? Ich habe meinen Vater schon immer bewundert; er war von Anfang an ein unglaubliches Vorbild für mich, seit ich ein kleines Mädchen war. Ihm bei der Arbeit auf dem Land zuzusehen und seine Leidenschaft für den Weinanbau und unser Geschäft mitzuerleben, könnte jeden genauso passioniert gegenüber dieser Arbeit werden lassen – sein Enthusiasmus ist wirklich ansteckend! Als ich verstand, dass ich bei dieser Art der Arbeit die meiste Zeit draußen verbringen würde, war mir alles klar. Das Wente Weingut ist das älteste, familienbetriebene Weingut im Land und wird von starker Frauenhand geführt. Waren die Frauen in deiner Familie schon immer ins Geschäft involviert? Ich bin sicher, dass meine Urgroßmutter Barbara mit ausgeholfen hat, schließlich waren es ja damals nur sie und ihr Mann Carl, die alles am Laufen hielten. Sie hatte neun Kinder, sieben davon haben überlebt und das allein ist schon eine große Aufgabe. Als Ernest und Herman übernahmen, hatten deren Frauen Bess und Edith beide Hochschulabschlüsse in Chemie und Biologie und arbeiteten bereits vor der Ehe. Nach der Prohibition (Alkoholverbot), arbeitete Bess, die vorher Chemielehrerin war, im Labor des Weinguts und Edith widmete sich dem Bewirtungsbereich und der PR für das Anwesen. Meine Großmutter Jean war ebenfalls

zuständig für die Bewirtung und war einige Jahre Mitglied des Verwaltungsrates. Meine Tante Carolyn fing im Bewirtungsbereich an, wechselte dann zu Marketing und Verkauf und ist jetzt unsere Geschäftsführerin! Hast du das Gefühl, dass heutzutage mehr Frauen in diesem Bereich arbeiten? Wenn nicht, was könnte man tun um, mehr junge Frauen für den Weinbau zu interessieren? Absolut! Ich habe Wein und Weinbau an der California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo studiert und ein Drittel der Studenten waren Frauen. Ich denke, dass Publikationen mit Augenmerk auf weibliche Führungskräfte im Weinanbau dazu beigetragen haben, den Beruf zu normalisieren und Türen für das wachsende Interesse und die Möglichkeiten für Frauen in diesem Beruf in den Vereinigten Staaten zu öffnen. Das Wente Weingut betreibt auch Probierstuben und Restaurants und ist bekannt für Konzerte. Ist es heutzutage wichtig als Weingut neben den überzeugenden Produkten auch ein Erlebnis anzubieten um langfristig Erfolg zu haben? Absolut! Kunden suchen nach einem Weg sich einer Marke verbunden zu fühlen und der einfachste Weg für eine Marke, dies zu erreichen, ist ein unvergessliches Erlebnis gepaart mit einem leckeren Produkt. Auf eurer Website heißt es „Neben Nikis Rolle als Winzerin findet man sie außerdem beim Retten von Tieren auf dem Weingut.“ Kannst du uns darüber mehr erzählen? Was machst du gern in deiner Freizeit? Ich denke damit übertreiben sie es ein bisschen! Ich liebe Tiere und bin dafür bekannt, Hunde zu retten und ihnen ein neues Zuhause in meiner Familie zu geben. Im Moment hat mein Cousin zwei Hunde, meine Eltern haben einen und mein Mann und ich haben auch einen Hund, die wir aus diversen Tierheimen gerettet haben; und den Hund meines Cousins retteten wir vom Straßenrand im Nirgendwo. Ich habe außerdem zwei halbwüchsige Turmfalken vom Weingut gerettet und sie bei einem Falkner untergebracht,der die Tiere trainiert, damit sie bei der Schädlingsbekämpfung helfen. Oft schubsen weibliche Falken ihre männlichen Geschwister

aus dem Nest, bevor sie fliegen können, was viele nicht überleben. Ich habe die Vögel mitten auf der Straße auf unserem Weinberg gefunden und konnte ihnen ein neues Zuhause finden. Im allgemeinen verbringe ich meine Freizeit gerne aktiv mit Freunden, Familie und natürlich unserem Hund. Ich liebe wandern, Fahrradfahren, Skifahren und Reiten – alles was man draußen machen kann. Was genau ist der Unterschied zwischen einem Winzer und einem Weinhersteller? Ein Winzer hat die Aufgabe, die Erde zu bewirtschaften, das Wachsen des Weinbestandes zu überwachen und die Qualität der Ernte sicherzustellen. Ein Weinhersteller ist dafür zuständig, aus der Ernte Wein zu gewinnen. Es ist eine symbiotische Partnerschaft und beide Rollen überlappen sich oft, um ein qualitativ hochwertiges Produkt zu kreieren (manchmal ist auch nur eine Person für beide Rollen zuständig!). Kannst du uns mehr zur Kooperation mit AmaWaterways Wine Cruises erzählen? Seit wann bist du Wein-Gastgeber und was macht dir daran am meisten Spaß? Dies ist mein erstes Jahr mit AmaWaterways! Ich fühle mich geehrt, diese Möglichkeit zu bekommen und ich freue mich sehr, das erste mal nach Bordeaux zu reisen. Durch meine Zertifikation als „Certified Specialist of Wine“ durch die „Society of Wine Educators” habe ich mich mit fast allen großen Weinregionen der Welt beschäftigt, aber hatte noch nicht die Möglichkeit die meisten davon zu besuchen! Wente Family Estates hat letztes Jahr bereits mit der Kreuzfahrtgesellschaft gearbeitet, aber da war ich noch nicht involviert. OFF TO NEW HORIZONS Nuremberg to Amsterdam – Three generations exploring Germany’s treasures aboard a river cruise ship In late May, I received an invitation to personally experience the river cruise „Treasures of the Main & Rhine“ with AmaWaterways traveling from Nuremberg to Amsterdam. As I’ve never been on or even considered a river cruise before I was very curious and excited to ﬁnd out what was in store for me. So I “packed in” my 10-year-old daughter Lily and invited my 77-year-old dad Heinrich to join us for a vacation on board of the AmaViola, one of the twin-balcony ships of the AmaWaterways fleet. From the moment we set foot on that ship all three of us were blown away by the service, the food, the accommodations and the well-thoughtout program.

Although the guests on board were mostly retirees, we were soon to discover that a river cruise is also great for a multi-generational trip. With my daughter being the youngest traveler on board and my dad the only “authentic” German, both were soon well-known among the other guests and I was mostly referred to as Lily’s Mom or “Henry’s daughter” (a rather new experience for me). 26 | HEIMAT abroad | FALL 2019

The other travelers took so much interest in my dad that they made him perform some of his Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra cover songs, as soon as they found out that he likes – and knows how – to sing.

River cruising is a very different experience than spending time on one of those massive ocean liners. The first major difference is the size of the ship and the number of fellow travelers. Instead of fighting with 2,000 people for 200 pool chairs and feeling overwhelmed by an over-abundance of activities and dining choices, AmaWaterways river cruises only host around 150 guests on board. This allows for excellent personal service and the chance to connect with everyone on board, if you so choose. Admittedly, large cruise ships are fun, too, but there is a lot to be said about sailing on a river cruise where you can explore new towns and villages every day while enjoying first-class service by an attentive staff on every booking level.

All in all, it was a great bonding experience for a family living thousands of miles apart. Although being German natives, it was exciting for my Dad and me to discover what Germany has to offer in terms of history, culture, natural beauty, and regional differences. My daughter Lily had great fun no matter whether she assisted the local glass blower who came on board one evening, roamed through the narrow streets of Wertheim on the Main or enjoyed time at the pool on the upper deck. Ich „packte“ also meine 10-jährige Tochter Lily ein und lud meinen 77-jährigen Vater Heinrich ein, uns an Bord der AmaViola, eines der Doppelbalkonschiffe der Amawaterways Flotte, zu begleiten. Von dem Moment an, als wir das Schiff betraten, waren wir alle drei vom Service, dem Essen, den Kabinen und dem gut durchdachten Programm begeistert. Auch wenn die Gäste zum Großteil Rentner waren, machten wir dennoch die Erfahrung, dass Flusskreuzfahrten eine tolle Option für Familienreisen mit mehreren Generationen sind. Da meine Tochter die jüngste Reisende an Bord und mein Vater der einzige „authentische“ Deutsche war, waren beide schnell bei allen Mitreisenden bekannt und ich wurde nur noch als “Lily’s Mutter“ oder „Henry’s Tochter“ angesprochen (eine ganz neue Erfahrung für mich). Die Mitreisenden waren derart interessiert an meinem Vater, dass sie ihn gleich überredet hatten, seine Interpretationen von Louis Armstrong und Frank Sinatra zum Besten zu geben, nachdem sie herausgefunden hatten, dass er gerne und gut singt. The Food

Zugegeben, Reisen auf großen Kreuzfahrtschiffen machen auch Spaß, aber es gibt einiges, was für eine Flusskreuzfahrt spricht, auf der man jeden Tag neue Städte und Dörfer erkundet, während man an Bord ausgezeichneten Service und aufmerksames Personal genießen kann, unabhängig davon, welchen Kabinenlevel man gebucht hat. Alles in allem war es eine tolle gemeinsame Erfahrung für unsere Familie, die tausende von Kilometern voneinander entfernt lebt. Auch wenn mein Vater und ich geborene Deutsche sind, war es dennoch spannend zu entdecken, was Deutschland an Geschichte, Kultur, Naturschönheit und regionalen Unterschieden zu bieten 21hat. Meine Tochter Lily hatte viel Spaß, egal ob sie dem lokalen Glasbläser assistierte, der einen Abend an Bord kam, durch die engen Gassen von Wertheim schlenderte oder sich im Pool an Deck des Schiffes vergnügte.

Absolutely incredible! It’s easy to get used to a daily scrumptious breakfast buffet and a four-course-lunch as well as dinner every day. The food was delicious with an international menu that also offered local specialties corresponding with the region we were visiting. The ship also features a smaller restaurant, the Chef’s Table Restaurant, where we enjoyed a seven-course-tasting-menu with a selection of excellent, complimentary wines and an amazing view.

The Drinks

All drinks were included during meals and the restaurants are boasting an amazing wine selection for lunch and dinner. Every afternoon, all guests were invited to “Sip and Sail”, featuring a specialty cocktail which was also part of our fare. Water was always replenished in our cabin and we were able to access a high-end WMF coffee machine making lattes, cappuccinos and hot chocolates 24/7.

The Cabins

The cabins are nicely appointed with all the amenities one would expect in a luxury hotel, only with a smaller bathroom. Most cabins either have a full or a French balcony. No matter what your budget is, there is no bad room on this vessel.

The Excursions

Each day during the cruise, we visited one or two towns along the way where guests got to choose from at least three options to explore medieval cities, castles, local food or drink specialties, and museums. There was always an option for gentle walkers for most of the excursions with lots of opportunities to sit down and take things a bit slower. More active guests got to choose between a bike ride from one point along the way to the next or a challenging hike to a nearby castle.

Entertainment

Each night, there was entertainment after dinner which ranges from interesting lectures to wine tasting, and local to international music and dance.

WHERE GERMAN IS STILL SPOKEN IN THE U.S. Over 300 years ago, German immigrants crossed the Atlantic to reach, among other places, Pennsylvania. Their language and culture continues to influence their descendants, as Deutsche Welle correspondent Oliver Sallet discovered. When Norman Sunday sits in front of his barn, he sometimes finds himself looking wistfully over his property. The 82-year-old farmer from the northeastern state of Pennsylvania knows that a decades-old family tradition is coming to an end. He once bred cattle here, but he‘s retired now and knows his children are unlikely to follow in his footsteps. Like many in Berk County, Sunday is the descendant of German immigrants who came from the Palatinate region of southwest Germany in the 18th century to find a new home. They were farmers who worked hard, believed in God, and cultivated their German culture. While the farmer himself has never been to Germany, his parents spoke Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch („Pennsylvania Dutch“), a German dialect spoken by the rural population for 300 years that is still alive today. „Ich kann‘s ned gud schwätze, aber ich verstehe“ („I can‘t speak it well, but I can understand it“), said Sunday in the local dialect.

German dialect born in the USA Patrick Donmoyer of the University of Pennsylvania wants to preserve this German heritage for future generations. At the German Cultural Heritage Center in Kutztown in Berks County, he teaches

Pennsylvania Deitsch in a former German school from 1870 that is now a museum. The language is not at risk of extinction, says Donmoyer. Around 40,000 people speak the dialect in Pennsylvania alone, and around 400,000 across America. The number is rising since many Amish and Mennonites faith communities who speak Pennsylvania German as their mother tongue traditionally have large families. Some 30% of Pennsylvanians have German ancestors, and many of the descendants still speak some form of German at home. Donmoyer says a Pennsylvanian German dialect has developed into its own language across 300 years.

Old customs reborn The popular Kutztown Folk Festival attracts 130,000 annual visitors who come to experience the lifestyles of German immigrants who have shaped Berks County to this day. In the Wursthaus, one can get their fill of German-style Pennsylvanian sausages with sauerkraut, while a brass band plays music that would not be out of place in the southern German state of Bavaria. The band‘s trumpet player, Leon Moll, regularly spoke Pennsylvania Deitsch with his parents as a child. Since their death, however, he rarely speaks the language, while his children „tun es nid mehr schwätze“ („don‘t speak it anymore“), he explains. For many, it is only during the nine days of the annual festival that their old country customs come to life.

The idea was born during a coffee meeting in January 2017 when HEIMAT abroad founder Gabi Hegan brought up the concept to Irene Fuchs, Director of Business Network, Startups & Events at the German American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) in New York. Both women saw the need for an event that would bring the German-speaking (expat) community together and give businesses and organizations a new platform to present themselves. With tremendous support of the GACC, the HEIMAT abroad team started to plan the first ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR in November of the same year. The Austrian and Swiss Chambers of Commerce supported the event as media partners. Hosted at the beautiful venue The Mezzanine in downtown Manhattan, the event was a success from year one. Over 40 exhibitors and sponsors signed up and around 500 attendees enjoyed the opportunity to learn about local organizations and services. Visitors were able to participate in lectures and workshops around expat living, career development, parenting, and, of course, networking. In 2019, our exhibitor spots were booked out by June. Why your business needs a presence in the United States and how to set up a U.S. office

►► REASONS TO EXPAND YOUR BUSINESS TO THE U.S. The United States is the world’s largest economy in terms of GDP and continues to be a beacon of individual freedom, liberty and the rule of law. Foreign investors are even in this day and age at no disadvantage versus local investors as the U.S. does not force them to share their intellectual property and knowhow with local partners and potential future competitors. Inventions and property are protected by the rule of law and studies show that customers generally show no preference for local brands versus foreign brands. The U.S .is an important breeding ground for a significant portion of the world’s most important scientific discoveries, startups and large enterprises. Five of the 10 best colleges worldwide are located here and the vast majority of Nobel prizes go to U.S. institutions and people affiliated with them. From the Swiss fashion startup to the recently launched Austrian mobile app business, countless companies strive to have a presence in the U.S. Business owners understand the myriad of opportunities they will leverage by having an office within one of the most robust economies in the world. Depending on the scope of a business, obtaining a license to operate, buy or sell in the U.S. can be a relatively easy task with the right support team in place. Most small and medium-sized companies are able to launch operations in the U.S. with a budget of $40,000 or less. In order to ensure an efficient knowledge transfer from headquarters abroad to an affiliated company, businesses like to send executives and employees with specialized knowledge to the U.S. Non-U.S.-citizens will, of course, need a U.S. work visa. Foreign national entrepreneurs and corporations most commonly apply for one of the following visas: L Visa: Intracompany Transferee The L visa classification is a non-immigrant visa, which allows companies operating both in the U.S. and abroad to transfer certain classes of employees from their foreign operations to the U.S. operations for a defined period of time. The L visa type is designed to allow employees to work at a branch, parent, affiliate, or subsidiary of the current employer in a managerial or executive capacity, or in a position requiring specialized knowledge. To qualify, the foreign national must have been employed by the same employer abroad continuously for one year within the three preceding years. H-1B Visa: Person in Specialty Occupation The H-1B visa classification is a non-immigrant visa for employees who wish to work for a U.S. employer in a specialty occupation. Generally, a specialty occupation is defined as a position that requires a higher educational degree (at least a bachelor’s degree) or its equivalent for entry to the field. An approved petition filed by the United States employer is a prerequisite to visa issuance. Government authorities generally look for a high salary as proof of the value of the position.

E Visa – Treaty Trader (E-1) and Treaty Investor (E-2) Treaty Trader (E-1) and Treaty Investor (E-2) visas are for citizens of countries with which the United States maintains treaties of commerce. To be eligible for an E visa a person must be coming to the U.S. as a: ►► Treaty Trader (E-1) to engage in substantial trade, including trade in services or technology, in qualifying activities, principally between the U.S. and the treaty country. Trade means the international exchange of goods, services, and technology. ►► Treaty Investor (E-2) to develop and direct the operations of an enterprise in which investors from the treaty country have invested a substantial amount of capital. A Face in the Night by Ray Kessler

In his remarkable debut novel, German-American author Ray Kessler takes readers on a ride through recent German history, masterfully moving between past and present, weaving fictitious events with historical facts. Adding a possible paranormal twist to the story, Kessler creates a tale of mystery and suspense. Set in Berlin in 2000 and during the final battle of Berlin in 1945, the main protagonist, District Attorney of Berlin Max von Hagen, sees a Face in the Night leading him to confront what’s real and what’s not. The face keeps reappearing and he thinks he is hallucinating.

Von Hagen, born to German eugenics parents he never knew, has a difficult marriage, suffers from the trauma of being an orphan, is on anti-depressants, and often seeks solace with his lonely English neighbor Anne Macmillan, the wife of the English Ambassador to Germany. She is the only surviving member from an extremely wealthy English family.

General Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben: Washington‘s Baron The man behind the name of the Steuben Parade 1957 marked the first German-American Day Parade in Ridgewood Queens. General Friedrich von Steuben’s name was chosen as a patron for the parade because his birthday, September 17, was closest to the original German-American Day (first established on October 6, 1683). New York City, on the day of the parade, is filled with native costumes and bands. Grand Marshalls, such as Siegfried and Roy, Henry Kissinger, Eric Braeden, George Steinbrenner, Rudolph Giuliani, and George Pataki, have all been part of the three-hour parade. Although it is the largest ethnic parade in the United States, it doesn’t draw too much attention in the media.

General Friedrich von Steuben, was a major contributor to America’s independence. He was born in Magdeburg, Germany, on September 17, 1730, to Royal Prussian Engineer Captain Baron Wilhelm von Steuben and Elizabeth von Jagvodin. As a small boy, Friedrich accompanied his military father and followed him to battles in the Crimea and Kronstadt. He joined the army at age seventeen, serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Seven Years’ War (1756); was wounded at the Battles of Prague (1757) and in Kunersdorf, and rose to the post of aidede-camp to Frederick the Great. After these wars, von Steuben needed a salary. His contact with the future French Minister of War Claude Louis Comte de Saint-Germain in Hamburg in 1763 led him to Paris where he was introduced to Benjamin Franklin who was there to recruit military help for the American Revolution. However, the Continental Congress insisted on “volunteer” foreign military, therefore von Steuben headed for Prussia.

Once there, he faced allegations of his homosexual involvement with other ofﬁcers. Although Frederick II was—in today’s language—“gay” himself, it was a punishable offense for everyone else. Von Steuben fled to America with his French “military secretary” Peter Etienne Du Ponceau, his Italian

Greyhound “Azor”, and two male companions, where he landed in New Hampshire, and ﬁnally arrived at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania to join the Continental Army on February 5, 1778, with the promise of pay after the war. Von Steuben – appointed by Washington as Inspector General – found an army living in borderline squalor, disorganization and desertion. Soon, he developed sanitation and camp design standards, exact record keeping, and inspections to combat rampant graft and theft. He standardized the rank system, uniforms, arms, and laid out the regulations for troop drilling.

The major issue with the troops, however, was language. Von Steuben spoke little English – he gave orders in German to Du Ponceau, who translated them into French which were then transmitted to a French-speaking American who gave them back in English to Washington and were delivered the next morning to his troops. Von Steuben’s “Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States“ (Blue Book) was used by the United States Army until the Mexican-American War of 1846. He then became an American citizen in 1784, retiring with his longtime companion. After joining The German Reformed Church, he helped form the German Society of New York (1784) to aid German immigrants. Even though the U.S. Government supported the retired General, he was constantly in debt. In 1783, New Jersey gave him a house in River Edge (still standing), which he sold to pay his debts. Finally, the General settled in Duanesburg, and then in Rome, New York. General Friedrich von Steuben died in 1794, leaving an incredible legacy behind. 1. Take a few tablespoons of the warm milk into a small bowl and pour the yeast on top. Let stand for a while to dissolve and activate. Meanwhile measure the flour into a large bowl and form a little hollow in the middle.

2. Cut the butter into smaller pieces and arrange it around the hollow. Add the 2 tsp. of salt to the flour but at a good distance from the hollow. When the yeast is ready, pour it into the hollow and start mixing while adding the warm milk. Mix long enough to create a smooth dough and divide it into about 6 to 10 pieces. Cover with a damp kitchen towel and let rise until it has significantly increased in size.

INGREDIENTS • 500 g flour (3 1/2 cups) • 1 pouch yeast • 250 ml warm milk or water (a little more than 1 cup) • 50 g Butter (almost 1/2 stick) • 2 tsp salt • 1 l water (4 cups) • 3 tbsp soda • some coarse salt

3. Fill one liter of water and 3 tbsp. baking soda into a large pot and bring to a boil. 4. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

One by one put the pretzels into the boiling water and remove after about 3 seconds. 6. Place the pretzels on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper and put some coarse salt on every pretzel. Bake for about 30 minutes or until brown.

Das deutsche Vokalensemble „Sjaella“ aus Leipzig begegnet dort der A-cappella-Gruppe „Just 6“. Kultur.21 begleitet die jungen Musikerinnen und Musiker bei einem Workshop. Im multikulturellen Südafrika ist gemeinschaftliches Singen die populärste Form, Musik zu machen. Während der Apartheid entwickelte sich Chormusik zum Sprachrohr des Protests gegen Ungleichheit und Unterdrückung. Afrikanische Vokalmusik trifft nun auf europäisches Gesangserbe. Schon im Jahr 2050 könnten mehr Kunststoffe als Fische im Meer sein. Im Januar 2018 machte die Coca-Cola-Company eine mutige Ankündigung: Bis 2030 verspricht das Unternehmen, das jedes Jahr 120 Milliarden Plastik-Flaschen verkauft, eine „Welt ohne Verschwendung“. Die Filmemacherin Sandrine Rigaud suchte nach der Wahrheit hinter diesem hehren Vorsatz. So fand sie heraus, dass sich in Tansania, weit weg vom amerikanischen Hauptsitz des Konzerns, ein ganz anderes Bild offenbart. Die Erfindung der Postkarte durch den Wiener Ökonom Emanuel Herrmann im Jahr 1869 war bahnbrechend. Die Möglichkeit, auf schnellstem Weg kurze, formlose Nachrichten zu schicken, die nicht viel kosteten, begeisterte die Menschen. Die ersten Postkarten waren noch ohne Bild, dann kamen Illustrationen und Fotos hinzu. Die Vielzahl der Motive und Varianten wuchs rasch: Orts- und Landschaftsansichten, Grußkarten, aber auch Feldpost aus dem Krieg oder Propagandakarten. Euromaxx erzählt die Geschichte der Postkarte anhand einer Ausstellung im Kommunikationsmuseum Berlin und besucht einen leidenschaftlichen Postkartensammler in Moskau. ab Sa 7. September 00:30

Sie wollen Blut saugen und lauern ihren Opfern regelrecht auf – in Wäldern, Parks und Gärten. Die Rede ist von Zecken. Haben sie sich erst einmal in die menschliche Haut gebohrt, müssen sie schnell und vorsichtig entfernt werden. Denn sie gehören neben Mücken zu den wichtigsten Krankheitsüberträgern. 900 Zeckenarten gibt es weltweit. In Europa übertragen Zecken hauptsächlich Erreger der Borreliose und der FrühsommerMeningoenzephalitis (FSME). Aber auch für weitere Erkrankungen können Zeckenstiche verantwortlich sein. Das Problem: Ärzte erkennen die Infektion oft nicht und stellen falsche Diagnosen; die Patienten leiden unnötig. Wie kann man sich vor Zecken schützen? Sind wir noch normal? Borderline-Syndrom, krankhafter Narzissmus, bipolare Störung – über diese und andere psychische Störungen wird derzeit viel publiziert. Allen seelischen Störungen gemein sind bestimmte Verhaltensweisen, die erhebliche Probleme im Zusammenleben mit anderen Menschen mit sich bringen, aber auch die Betroffenen selbst oft sehr leiden lassen. Hilfe kann eine Therapie bringen, doch das setzt voraus, dass die Betroffenen überhaupt realisieren, dass sie Hilfe benötigen. Das ist in vielen Fällen nicht so. Menschen mit narzisstischer Persönlichkeitsstörung zum Beispiel können ihre Situation nur in den seltensten Fällen einschätzen und suchen nur dann einen Psychotherapeuten auf, wenn sie über längere Zeit depressiv oder suizidgefährdet sind. Wann ist jemand noch normal und wo beginnt die therapiebedürftige Störung? Woran können Betroffene und deren Angehörige erkennen, ob jemand Hilfe braucht? In Memoriam ►► FERDINAND PIËCH (* 17. Apr. 1937 – † 25. Aug. 2019) was a former chairman of Volkwagen and one of the richest men in Germany. As a grandchild of Ferdinand Porsche, founder of Porsche AG, he was destined to become an engineer. During his career working for VW, Daimler and VW subsidiary Audi, Piëch was mostly known for creating the straight-five engine, four-wheel-drive system and the turbocharge-direct-injection engine. In the 90s he was responsible for the purchase of the luxury brands Bugatti and Bentley for Volkswagen AG. In 1999 his initiative led to the development of the highly fuel efficient Lupo 3L TDI engine, which speaks to his visionary foresight.

Piëch leaves behind his wife, 13 children (12 of whom he confirmed), 26 grandchildren and an estimated inheritance of one billion Euros. ►► PETER LINDBERGH (*Nov. 23, 1944 – † Sept. 3, 2019) was an internationally celebrated photographer. Growing up in Duisburg he soon started studying at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts in the 1960s. After several trips around Europe he studied at the College of Art in Krefeld, where he was invited to present his own work at a gallery. After graduating he moved to Düsseldorf where he turned towards photography and opened his first own studio in 1973. Later he pursued his career living in Paris, where he became known for redefining beauty standards.

He always attempted to enhance the natural beauty. A line of photographs taken of models in plain white t-shirts soon led him to international fame and eventually working for famous fashion magazines.
