If you live in or near a big city you may be in luck and your children can attend a German school leading to the German International Abitur in addition to their high school diploma. In each edition we will introduce one of those institutions – many of them only founded in recent years.

Founded in 1980, German International School New York (GISNY) is a private, non-profit, international school beautifully located on 20 acres of land in Westchester County, New York, 30 minutes north of New York City and 15 minutes south of Greenwich, Connecticut.

GISNY offers a challenging German/English bilingual, multicultural approach to teaching and learning from Pre-K through Grade 12. Its highly qualified international faculty aims to nurture inquisitive, open-minded, and independent thinkers.

Beyond striving for academic excellence, GISNY provides an inclusive environment that promotes individual growth, diversity, and teamwork. Small groups allow the teachers to pay close personal attention to each student, thereby helping them to achieve their potential and encouraging them to develop into curious, analytical, and conscientious global citizens.

The Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) and Kindergarten programs offer 3-5-year-old children large and sun-filled classrooms with direct access to multiple playgrounds, which translates into plenty of outdoor exploration and play time. Children entering Pre-K or Kindergarten do not need to speak or understand German. The “One Teacher, One Language” approach exposes the students to both German and English throughout the day and lays the foundation for children to be bilingual by the end of First Grade.

In Grades 1 to 4, students learn to read fluently and to express themselves clearly in both written and spoken German and English. The teachers at GISNY inspire and challenge students to think creatively and critically with a stimulating cross-curricular approach to learning that opens young minds to the complex connections that shape our world.

You can visit GISNY during their frequent open houses or schedule a private tour emailing admissions@gisny.org. More information can be found on the website www.gisny.org or on social media.

PARENT'S VOICES »The school has evolved into a true 'German International School'. This has changed very much in the last years, catering to a larger international audience. It is now possible to benefit from the rigorous German bilingual curriculum and their international degree in grade 12, having started in preschool or kindergarten without knowledge of German. It is a small school with beautiful grounds, a warm atmosphere and lots of play for small kids. Strong science focus, but lots of music, drama and sports in the afternoon program. Once you finish with a dual degree, you can study at the best colleges globally (without the US college fees by the way). My two girls have been at the school since kindergarten and they are perfectly bilingual and very happy there.«

Students in Middle and Upper School are welcomed into a world of challenging, well-rounded bilingual academic instruction at the only school in the tri-state area accredited to offer the New York State High School Diploma and the German International Abitur (DIA). “This is an exciting time for us at GISNY as we grow in numbers and embrace a culture of diversity and inclusion. As I walk onto our green campus with the addition of the new cafeteria, library, faculty room and offices, I enjoy seeing a smile on everybody’s face,” says Lars Hierath, Head of School.

»Great School in Westchester, New York. Beautiful facilities on a large property. Excellent education and wonderful teachers. My three kids are now bilingual and the school offers them something for the future and their life!«

Happy Birthday!

The Goethe International Charter School in Los Angeles Turns 10!

Thanks to the wonderful vision and hard work of GICS founder Elke Miller and her fellow founding parents, Frank Beuthin, Bernhard Baumgartner, Renate Craft, Johannes Fisslinger, Jose Gonzales, Natalie Kurtz, John Mora, Kirsten Paul, Karin Shaw and Anne Wille-Witzgall, Los Angeles was given its first and - for many years - only school offering a dual-language German Immersion program.

The school is built upon the precepts of the International Baccalaureate Programme with a focus on a world view and inquiry-based learning. A dual-language German Immersion program serves as the foundation of the language offerings, which also include Spanish and German Language Acquisition programs. Over the past decade, thanks to very dedicated staff, faculty and parents as well as very enthusiastic students, GICS has established an excellent reputation earning recognition as a California Distinguished School (2014), a California Gold Ribbon School (2016) and a California Green Ribbon School (2017). Authorized by LAUSD, the Charter was recently approved to include grades 6 to 8.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for the 10-Year-Anniversary took place on September 9, 2019. The team of HEIMAT abroad sends its best wishes for the future.
