We did it! The first edition of our HEIMAT abroad Magazine was well received by former German World Magazine readers as well as everyone who joined our HEIMAT abroad readership since. We are thrilled about the positive feedback and the support we received. In recent years you’ve probably heard plenty of times that "print is dead”! Well, we dare to disagree and believe that there is always room for a niche product like ours. With your support, we hope to prove everyone wrong! While we love holding our first issue HEIMAT abroad in our very own hands, it still is necessary to go with the times. And they call for a digital version of the magazine. No worries, we won’t give up print and our subscribers will still enjoy the benefit of having their magazine delivered straight to their mailboxes. However, we also offer the option to read the magazine’s online version via the platform issuu.com.

PUBLISHER Gabi Hegan is originally from Munich and spent her “first” career in the hotel industry. After her daughter was born in 2009 she founded the NYC based community website www.citykinder.com and in 2017 the annual ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR. In 2018 she launched the new platform www.heimatabroad.com to reach and support German-speaking expats and residents nationwide. She is excited to collaborate with Petra Schurmann from www.german-world.com to co-publish a brand new bilingual magazine servicing newly arrived expats, recent immigrants and German-Americans alike.

DESIGN Conny Gaertner is originally from Dresden, Germany, where she had established her own graphic design and photography business. One of her big dreams was always living abroad, so when the opportunity arose she followed her husband to Bridgewater, New Jersey. While getting settled in the US, Conny enjoyed spending time with her 2 daughters as a stayat-home mum for a while. Now she is happy to use her creativity again as the lead designer for HEIMAT abroad Magazine and other mostly German clients in the US. 6 | HEIMAT abroad | SUMMER 2018

CO-PUBLISHER Petra Schurmann studied in Heidelberg before working for Bertelsmann AG in Germany and in California. In 2000, Petra and the journalist Alexander Hast founded the website www.german-world.com in L.A. to promote German culture in the US. In 2003 they added the bilingual print publication "German World Magazine". Since 2013, Petra has also been involved in the annual film festival "German Currents", and has been a supporter of the multi-language preschool "Kigala" as well as the Goethe-International Charter School in L.A. and the Steuben Parade in New York.

CONTENT Kathrin Schönberg studied in Cologne and Koblenz and taught elementary school for 10 years. Since 2008 she lives with her husband and 2 daughters in San José, CA. She loves living in the "Golden State”, but still misses Cologne, her family, friends and German bread. In 2015 she started her blog "Cöllefornia” where she takes a good look at the joys and challenges of being at home in two worlds. Kathrin taught German classes at her "Das Fliegende Klassenzimmer” for many years. Now she works at the GISSV in Mountain View and is excited to be a regular contributor to HEIMAT abroad.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Juliane Tranacher was born in Lübeck. As a high school student she spent one year in Minnesota, exploring "America's heartland". After studying in Freiburg and Gothenburg (Sweden), Juliane moved to Berlin to work as an editor and communications manager in the financial sector. From 2015 to 2017 she lived in New York City with her husband, where they welcomed their first daughter. Currently Juliane resides in Hamburg with her family.

ENTERTAINMENT AND LIFESTYLE Stephen Fuchs is a first generation German-American, born in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up deeply involved in the local German community, he witnessed a generational shift that called for a reawakening of the German-American culture. To appeal to his generation and the ones that follow, Stephen started German Pulse, an online platform for Americans of German descent to discover the modern German culture. He still lives in the Chicago area and continues to play an active role in the German community.

Thoughts on the World Cup 2018

Die WM 2018 und die Frage nach

For the first time in the history of the Soccer World Cup, Germany was recently eliminated in the group stages. A whole country was in shock. However, four of the past five winning teams had the same destiny - at least we are in good company.

Erstmals in der Geschichte der Fußballweltmeisterschaft ist Deutschland bereits in der Vorrunde ausgeschieden – ein echter Schock für das Land. Immerhin: Vier der letzten fünf siegreichen Mannschaften erging es ebenso – wir befinden uns also in guter Gesellschaft.

The disappointing result sparked many discussions afterwards – and not only those related to sports. While looking for potential scapegoats, people kept constantly throwing one player's name into the ring: Mesut Özil.

Das schlechte Ergebnis hat viele Diskussionen im Land ausgelöst – und das bei weitem nicht nur sportlicher Natur. Denn bei der Suche nach dem Sündenbock rückte plötzlich ein Spieler ganz besonders in den Fokus: Mesut Özil.

Mesut Özil and Ilkay Gündogan, two professional German soccer players with Turkish roots, presented the Turkish President Erdogan with a soccer jersey with the inscription "For my President" while being officially photographed together. As Germany and Turkey are in the midst of challenging diplomatic relations and at least Özil officially represented Germany as a member of the national soccer team, this move was widely critizised. Even the German President Steinmeier got involved and asked both players to join him in a private meeting.

Mesut Özil und Ilkay Gündogan, zwei deutsche Profi-Fußballer türkischer Herkunft, haben im Mai 2017 dem türkischen Präsidenten Erdogan ein Trikot mit der Aufschrift „Für meinen Präsidenten“ übergeben und sich dabei fotografieren lassen. Weil Deutschland und die Türkei gerade eine schwierige diplomatische Phase durchlaufen und zumindest Özil als Spieler der deutschen Nationalmannschaft auch sein Land repräsentierte, ist die Handlung vielerorts negativ aufgenommen worden. Sogar Bundespräsident Steinmeier schaltete sich ein und lud die beiden Sportler zu einer privaten Audienz.

After the defeat in Russia the discussion was picked up again by the media. It was speculated that the issue had negtive effects on the team spirit. The debate culminated in Özil officially quitting the national team – one reason cited was "racism" against him, which was immediatly refuted by the DFB.

Nach der Niederlage in Russland wurde die Angelegenheit erneut in den Medien aufgegriffen. Es wurden Vermutungen geäußert, dass sich der Vorfall negativ auf den Zusammenhalt im Team ausgewirkt haben könnte. Die Debatte führte schließlich dazu, dass Özil aus der Nationalmannschaft zurücktrat – ein Schritt, den er unter anderem mit „Rassismus“ ihm gegenüber begründete, was der DFB scharf zurückwies.

and the Question of National Identity

Unfortunately, the issues around the World Cup 2018 mirror the social climate and tolerance levels in Germany. While the World Cup 2006 created a strong feeling of "togetherness" – that light-heartedness and euphoria has all but vanished 12 years later. With the refugee crisis and the rise of right wing parties, people ask again who’s "really" German and who’s not. We experience again that meaningful integration is a difficult process. As a native German citizen who lived in the United States for many years, these topics are close to my heart. I also keep asking myself how much I want to assimilate and become "American" while I also still identity myself as a "foreigner" who’s celebrating her heritage and culture amongst other things by publishing this magazine. „echter“ Integration

Leider spiegelt die WM 2018 damit auch ein Stimmungsbild des sozialen Klimas und der Toleranz in Deutschland wieder. Hatte die WM 2006 noch ein enormes Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl erweckt, bei dem wir uns erstmals nach langer Zeit trauten – unabhängig von unseren Wurzeln – die deutsche Flagge zu wehen, so ist von dieser Unbeschwertheit und Euphorie zwölf Jahre später nichts mehr zu spüren. Durch die Flüchtlingskrise und den Aufstieg rechter Parteien, wird wieder verstärkt gefragt, wer „wirklich“ deutsch ist und wer eigentlich gar nicht „richtig“ dazugehört. Wieder einmal zeigt sich, wie schwierig echte Integration ist. Als gebürtige Deutsche, die seit vielen Jahren in den USA lebt, bewegt mich dieses Thema. Denn auch ich frage mich oft, wie sehr ich mich bereits als Amerikanerin fühle und wie stark ich weiterhin ein Stück weit „Ausländerin“ bleiben will, die ihre deutsche Herkunft und Kultur feiert und durch dieses Magazin mit anderen teilt. GERMANY ELECTED TO UN SECURITY COUNCIL

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier honored the former US Foreign Minister Henry A. Kissinger on the occasion of his 95th birthday on May 27th with a festive dinner at Bellevue Castle in Berlin. In his speech President Steinmeier said.

Mit einem festlichen Abendessen im Schloss Bellevue in Berlin hat Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier den ehemaligen U.S.-Außenminister Henry A. Kissinger zum 95. Geburtstag am 27. Mai gratuliert. In seiner Rede sagt Bundespräsident Steinmeier:

The United Nations has voted to give Germany a two-year seat on the Security Council. Belgium, South Africa, the Dominican Republic and Indonesia will take up the remaining non-permanent places.

“During your long life you’ve seen and experienced more than most people. You also connected foreign policy decisions with intellectual reflection in your very own unique way. Your experiences, insights and assessments still enrich our thoughts today in regards to the challenges that lie before us in these tumultuous times. The fact that you were able to keep your unique humor even during difﬁcult times that required cool reasoning throughout the years is appreciated by everyone who got to know you in person.

„Sie haben in Ihrem langen Leben nicht nur mehr gesehen und erlebt als die meisten Menschen. Sie haben auch in einzigartiger Weise außenpolitisches Handeln und intellektuelle Reflexion miteinander verbunden. Ihre Erfahrungen, Einsichten und Einschätzungen bereichern bis in die heutige, unruhige Zeit unser Denken über die Herausforderungen, die vor uns liegen. We hope to beneﬁt from your knowledge and wisdom for a long time.” However, Steinmeier also warned about the weakening of transatlantic relationships: even under Henry A. Kissinger, “the U.S. wasn‘t able to solve the problems of the world on its own.” But the world won’t be able to solve their problems “without the U.S. and deﬁnitely not against the U.S.“ [Translation Gabi Hegan]

In June 2018, Germany was voted onto the United Nations Security Council for the sixth time after it secured a two-thirds majority in the General Assembly. Its place was effectively guaranteed going into the vote: Germany and Belgium ran unopposed for the two spots in the Western European and Others category. Israel was initially also in the running, but withdrew its bid last May. Germany received 184 votes from the 190 cast ballots.

DEUTSCHLAND WURDE IN DEN UN SICHERHEITSRAT GEWÄHLT Die Vereinten Nationen haben beschlossen, Deutschland für zwei Jahre einen nichtständigen Sitz im Sicherheitsrat zu geben. Belgien, Südafrika, die Dominikanische Republik und Indonesien werden die verbleibenden nichtständigen Sitze einnehmen. Im Juni 2018 wurde Deutschland zum sechsten Mal in den Sicherheitsrat der Vereinten Nationen gewählt, nachdem die Zweidrittelmehrheit in der Hauptversammlung erreicht wurde. Der Sitz war effektiv schon vor der Wahl garantiert: Deutschland und Belgien waren die oppositionslosen Kandidaten für die beiden Sitze in der Kategorie „Westeuropa und Andere“. Israel stand ursprünglich ebenfalls zur Wahl, hat aber die Bewerbung wieder zurückgezogen. Deutschland erhielt 184 der 190 Stimmen.

FEMALE POWER AT GERMANY’S EMBASSY IN DC Emily Haber becomes the first female German Ambassador to the U.S. Germany has a new ambassador at the German Embassy in Washington: Emily Haber, who began her work on June 19, 2018. Ambassador Haber joined the German Foreign Office in 1982 and has had an impressive career that included postings in the former Soviet Union, Russia and Turkey. This certainly sits very well with the current challenges at hand in the U.S. Prior to her assignment in Washington D.C., Ambassador Haber served as the State Secretary for the Ministry of the Interior and before that, she was the State Secretary of the German Foreign Office. Even before starting her new appointment, Emily Haber made history as the first woman to serve as the German Ambassador to the US. On June 22th, 2018, Ambassador Haber presented her credentials to President Donald Trump in a ceremony at the White House (photo). Meanwhile, former Ambassador Peter Wittig will be leaving the U.S. to serve as the German Ambassador to the United Kingdom. “DC has been a great home to me and my family for the past four years,” he said on Twitter. “I thank all of my followers as I pass the torch to new Ambassador of Germany and close friend Emily Haber.” Coincidence would have it that HEIMAT abroad co-publisher Petra Schurmann met Ambassador Wittig on his very last day in office in Los Angeles. Ambassador Wittig was part of the delegation to accompany Federal President Steinmeier during his visit to California on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Thomas Mann House Artists in Residence. FRAUENPOWER AN DER DEUTSCHEN BOTSCHAFT IN DC Emily Haber wird als erste Frau die Stelle der Deutschen Botschafterin in den USA einnehmen Deutschland hat eine neue Botschafterin in Washington: Emily Haber hat ihre Tätigkeit am 19. Juni 2018 aufgenommen. Haber ist dem Auswärtigen Dienst 1982 beigetreten und hat während ihrer Karriere unter anderem Posten in der ehemaligen Sowjetunion, Russland und in der Türkei bekleidet. Diese Erfahrungen werden ihr nun sicherlich zugutekommen, wenn es darum geht, sich den aktuellen Herausforderungen zu stellen, die sie in den USA erwarten. Vor ihrer Versetzung nach Washington D.C. war Haber Staatssekretärin für das Innenministerium sowie Staatssekretärin des Deutschen Auswärtigen Amtes. Schon bevor sie ihr Amt in Washington D.C. antritt, macht Haber Geschichte, denn sie ist die erste Frau, die Deutsche Botschafterin in die USA entsandt wird. Während einer Zeremonie im Weißen Haus am 22. Juni 2018 präsentierte sie ihre Referenzen Donald Trump. NEWS | Environment PREPARATIONS FOR NEXT CLIMATE CONFERENCE Rules for global climate protection to be implemented “Global problems can only be solved together,“ said Germany’s Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Petersberg Climate Dialogue. In Berlin, representatives from 35 countries prepared for the next climate conference in Poland. Germany is fully committed to the Paris Agreement on climate change, reaffirmed Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel. By now, 178 countries have ratified the agreement. dw.com A year ago, the United States announced that it intends to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change. Against this background, Merkel called for stronger cooperation on climate protection: “We want to adopt a robust set of rules (for implementation) by the end of the year, at the UN Climate Change Conference in Katowice.“ With the Paris Agreement, the participating states also agreed to draw up specific and binding rules for its implementation. The efforts of the participating states are not yet sufficient to avert climate change. In future, the contributions of the individual states should be measurable and comparable. Many states want to expand their national commitments, and thus send a clear political signal in December. If action is not taken, by the year 2100 several hundred million people globally will be affected annually by floods, warned the German Minister of the Environment, Svenja Schulze.

The latest climate protection report shows that Germany will miss its self-imposed goals. “We in Germany must admit that we need to improve again,“ Merkel said. The Federal Government is accelerating the phasing out of power generation from coal. In order to avoid detrimental effects on the population, the Federal Government has established a commission on structural change. The “Commission on Growth, Structural Change and Employment“ will draft proposals for socially-equitable and economically-responsible structural development by December. With such change, it is necessary to ﬁrst consider those affected, and not only the CO2 emissions, according to Merkel.

In Berlin bereiteten sich Vertreter von 35 Ländern auf die nächste Klimakonferenz in Polen vor. Deutschland steht nach wie vor hinter den Abmachungen des Pariser Abkommens zum Klimaschutz, bestätigte Kanzlerin Merkel. Bisher haben 178 Länder das Abkommen ratiﬁziert. Vor einem Jahr hat die US-amerikanische Regierung ihre Absichten angekündigt, sich vom Pariser Abkommen zum Klimaschutz zu distanzieren. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat Merkel zu einer stärkeren Zusammenarbeit für den Klimaschutz aufgerufen: Zur UN-Klimaschutz Konferenz in Katowice Ende diesen Jahres sollen eindeutige Regeln zur Umsetzung der Ziele verabschiedet werden. Mit dem Pariser Abkommen haben sich die teilnehmenden Staaten auch dazu verpflichtet, speziﬁsche und verbindliche Regeln zur Implementierung aufzustellen. Die Bestrebungen der teilnehmenden Staaten sind allerdings noch nicht ausreichend, um einen Klimawandel abzuwenden. In Zukunft sollen die Beiträge der einzelnen Staaten messbar und vergleichbar sein. Viele Staaten wollen ihre Verpflichtungen noch erweitern und setzen damit im Dezember ein klares politisches Ziel. Wenn nichts unternommen wird, werden bis 2100 weltweit mehrere hunderttausend Menschen von Fluten betroffen sein, warnt die Deutsche Umweltministerin Svenja Schulze. Der letzte Klimaschutz-Report zeigt, dass Deutschland die selbstgesteckten Ziele nicht erreichen wird. „Wir müssen uns auch in Deutschland eingestehen, dass wir uns weiter verbessern müssen“, so Merkel. Die Bundesregierung beschleunigt den Ausstieg der Energiegewinnung durch Kohle. Um negative Effekte auf die Bevölkerung zu vermeiden, hat die Bundesregierung im Juni 2018 eine Kommission für den Strukturwandel eingesetzt. Die Kommission für Wachstum, Strukturwandel und Beschäftigung wird bis Dezember Vorschläge zum sozial gerechten und wirtschaftlich verantwortlichen Strukturwandel vorlegen. Bei einem so einschneidenden Wandel sei es wichtig, zuerst an jene zu denken, die direkt betroffen seien, und sich nicht alleinig auf den CO2-Ausstoß zu konzentrieren, erklärt Merkel.

NEWS | Sport NO. 41 TURNS 40 Dirk Nowitzki wants to continue - even at the age of 40 German basketball star Dirk Nowitzki, who wears No. 41 for the Dallas Mavericks and turned 40 on June 19, intends to be back on the court for the Dallas Mavericks this year, despite his age and the fact that injuries have been a recurring problem in the later stages of Nowitzki’s career. He happens to be the fourth-oldest player in the NBA and is going into his 21st season as the sixth-highest all-time scorer in the NBA (status: June 19, 2018).

ON A QUEST TO PRESERVE DEMOCRACY Germany’s Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier Opened Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles

It is rare that a head of state makes a stop in Los Angeles but on June 18, 2018 this actually happened: No lesser than Germany’s Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in Los Angeles in order to officially inaugurate the recently renovated former residence of Nobel Prize laureate Thomas Mann. The Mann Family had fled Nazi Germany in 1933 to Switzerland and then to the U.S. in 1938 where they first lived in Princeton, New Jersey, and later in Southern California. The house on 1550 San Remo Drive, for which Mann commissioned architect Julius Ralph Davidson, became the home of the Mann family from 1942 to 1952. Davidson, born in Berlin in 1889 and a resident of Los Angeles since 1923, is considered one of the main representatives of “California Modernism”. Thomas Mann became a leading figure of exiled German intellectuals and his residence in Pacific Palisades, not far away from Martha and Lion Feuchtwanger’s Villa Aurora, a focus of German émigré life in Southern California”, a “place where intellect triumphed over barbarity” as Heinrich Wefing writes in Building Paradise: Exile Architecture in California. It was the house where Mann wrote “Doctor Faustus“, the third part of the Joseph trilogy, and his influential radio speeches “To the German Listeners“ (“Deutsche Hörer!”), which were broadcast by the BBC to Germany during the Second World War and formed an important counter message to the Nazi propaganda. When the house was put on the market for sale in 2016 and risked to be demolished, the Federal Foreign Office headed then by Frank-Walter Steinmeier, stepped in and purchased the house on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany for 13 million US dollars in order to save such an important legacy of German exile culture. Mann expert Tilman Lahme called it an “auspicious moment for German cultural foreign policy.” Under the auspices of Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House e. V., the Thomas Mann House is now home to a residency program and debate venue of German intellectuals offering them – in the spirit of Thomas Mann - an opportunity to engage in an exchange about topics that pose major challenges on both sides of the Atlantic. After a thorough 18-month-restoration of the historical building that came at a cost of another 5 million US dollars and is still not completely finished, Steinmeier had come to see the results, accompanied by his wife Elke Büdenbender and a delegation of Thomas Mann fellows and supporters. The building‘s structure has been maintained, but the interior was completely changed. The only room that

After a private tour given by Thomas Mann’s grandson Fridolin who lived in the house as a child, and his wife Christine, Steinmeier addressed the circle of 250 hand-selected guests from the fields of culture, science, politics, and the media, among them outgoing German Ambassador to the United States, Peter Wittig. In his speech, the Federal President expressed the wish that the Thomas Mann Fellows “fulﬁll this house with a democratic spirit - and with debates bridging the continents.“ This, said Steinmeier, “is the core to which this historic place and these new fellowships should be committed: a change of the mental climate; a new spirit in which democracy will thrive.“

Its first residents are German actor Burghart Klaussner (The White Ribbon), followed by Berlin-based sociologist Jutta Allmendinger, Thomas Mann researcher Heinrich Detering, as well as micro electronics engineer Yiannos Manoli. Another selected fellow was journalist Sylke Tempel, who however tragically died during a storm in Berlin. After his speech, Steinmeier mixed and mingled with the guests while soft piano music filled the beautiful park-like surroundings of the 5-bedroom estate. The next day, Steinmeier opened the conference “The Struggle for Democracy“ at the Getty Center in Los Angeles with a poignant speech calling for commitment and creativity in the defense of democracy: Democracy, he said, “cannot be won without an idea of “the democracy of the future.” The endangerment and future of democracy were discussed by the Thomas Mann Fellows and US intellectuals. From Los Angeles, the Federal President‘s delegation traveled on to Silicon Valley in Northern California, where the focus on the topic of democracy was continued: Frank-Walter Steinmeier led an expert discussion on the challenges of digitization and its societal developments brought about by the digital transformation in the field of artificial intelligence, as well as the future of employment and its consequences for democracy.

GERMAN SCHOOL BROOKLYN’S THIRD ANNUAL SUMMER GALA FOR THE WIN!

As the gala guests made their way toward the Red Hook water front on Monday evening, the sun started to set behind the Liberty Warehouse (www.thelibertywarehouse.com), drenching the terrace in beautiful orange light - welcoming well dressed party goers from all 5 boroughs, several countries and many different trades.

As of June 2018, the German School Brooklyn has been accredited by the German government as the 141st German School Abroad.

German School Brooklyn (GSB) was founded in September 2014 with one combined Kindergarten and 1st grade. Within 4 years it has grown to full capacity, adding a grade per year with the oldest group of children forming the first middle school class in 2018/19. On May 14th, 2018, GSB held their 3rd annual Summer Gala, which functions as their official fundraising event and has also become one of the “must-attend” events in the larger German-speaking community of New York City. During the cocktail reception, groups of parents, teachers and supporters gathered at the bar, buffet tables and auction tables, which featured 40 unique auction items, including a signed Bayern Munich jersey, as well as a signed KISS guitar! It was the first time that the GSB gala offered digital bidding. The program was kicked off with a musical performance by Sara Dähn & Thomas Blaeschke from Voice over Piano followed by special greetings from the office of Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, who sent special counsel Ama Dwimoh. Then it was time for the co-presidents of the board of trustees, Stefan Stauder and Ilka Wörner, to announce the youngest guests of the evening: the graduating 5th grade students who will form the first-ever GSB middle school class! The students did a lovely job introducing themselves to the attentive audience and did an even lovelier job introducing the host of the evening, German Consul General, Mr. David Gill.

During dinner, the school’s founders Kathrin Nagle and Muriel Plag announced Thorsten Thielow’s GSB movie, which gave a glimpse into the everyday life and spirit of this remarkable school. This was followed by a moderated donation appeal which raised over $5,000 via a live bidding app. When the band “The Engagements” started playing hits with two singers that effortlessly covered a repertoire including James Brown, David Bowie, Prince and - somehow the Cure - the crowd went wild. All in all the evening was a great success. THE GERMAN AMERICAN CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE Help Apprenticeship Programs Gain Steam in the US

The GACC manages a network of apprenticeships in 11 US states, connecting employers and providing young people exciting, sustainable career opportunities. Last month, at an Apprenticeship Forward event at the John Heldrich Center for Workforce Development in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy announced the Garden state's new Apprenticeship Network. As a former ambassador to Germany, Governor Murphy explained that he experienced first hand the success of the German apprenticeship model and how it contributes to forming the backbone of a stable economy. The governor pointed out numerous other workforce initiatives, including NJ Place, which allows apprentices to earn college credits for their training, modeled directly after the German Duale Ausbildung. Other speakers at the event included new CEO of Siemens USA Barbara Humpton and Siemens Foundation CEO David Etzwiler. Ms. Humpton described Siemens' innovative Mechatronics training program, which is now active in nine states and has created a sustainable pipeline for jobs that only recently came into being. This Apprenticeship Forward meeting was followed up last week with a roundtable forum on apprenticeships hosted by the GACC, the Office of the Governor and NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology), where the event took place. Dr. Joel Bloom (President, NJIT) emphasized the school’s role specific to the areas of tech and manufacturing, and concerns over a shrinking labor pool and “mismatch” in meeting the needs of industry. He noted a lack of career pathways towards advanced manufacturing work, as well as decrea-

sed emphasis on CTE. He concluded his remarks by announcing the October rollout of a new NJIT school of applied engineering and technology, with a component emphasizing apprenticeships and co-ops. Apprenticeship Forward began as a national conference held in Washington, DC last year. Bringing together 600 leaders from the apprenticeship community – representing businesses, industry associations and workforce boards, educational institutions, academia, and state and federal agencies – the conference focused on two emerging challenges for American apprenticeship: engaging new industry sectors and expanding apprenticeship access, especially for women, people of color, and young people who have historically been underrepresented in apprenticeship. The GACCs are committed to fostering positive economic and cultural ties between the US and Germany. That includes promoting the interests of its member firms and organizations to ensure that their businesses thrive in the US. The GACCs accomplish this by, among other things, collaborating with public and private US institutions on issues such as apprenticeship programs, by curating startup programs and by fostering industry cluster collaborations and transatlantic exchanges, all of which have been so effective in providing German companies with the strategic tools they need to thrive in the US.

June 5, 2018 was an extraordinary day for the Goethe International Charter School (GICS) in Los Angeles: the L.A. Unified School District approved the GICS’s Charter Revision to add a middle school (grades 6 – 8). “This is a monumental achievement in terms of advancing our mission to be a TK-12 school,” stated Executive Director Gwenis Laura in her official announcement that day. Three attempts were necessary until the middle school was finally approved. The petitions in previous years had been rejected by the L.A. Unified School District for reasons like low level of ethnic diversity. In a joint effort, the administration team, the Board of Trustees that includes Frank Beuthin (photo), one of the founding parents, a dedicated teacher team and a highly motivated parent association headed by the late Tony Thomas have finally succeeded. At the same time, the achievement is a wonderful crowning of Gwenis Laura’s personal 40-year-long career in public education before retiring in July 2018. GOETHE-INSTITUT L.A.: Homeless but Hopeful While Los Angeles is graced with a new German cultural hot spot, the Thomas Mann House, which was acquired by the Germany’s Federal Government last year for 13 million U.S. dollars and renovated for another 5 million U.S. dollars, the lease of the GoetheInstitut at its longtime location on 5750 Wilshire Boulevard could unfortunately not be renewed. For more than 25 years, this address had been the home of Germany’s ofﬁcial cultural center in Southern California, but due to the expiration of the lease in February 2018 and inacceptable new lease terms, the Goethe-Institut had to vacate its premises at this prime Miracle Mile location opposite the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Unfortunately, a new location could not be secured before Goethe-Institut Director Fareed Majari’s tenure ended in L.A. in February 2018. His successor is Mrs. Lien HeidenreichSeleme, who is new to Los Angeles but she headed the Goethe-Institut in Afghanistan and served as Program Director of the Goethe-Institut in South Africa and as such also created many affiliate Goethe-Institut programs on the African continent. This experience will certainly be very valuable to master the pressing challenge of finding a new home for the institute in L.A.‘s real estate jungle. For the time being, the Goethe-Institut team operates from a temporary office in Downtown L.A., a neighbourhood that has been also considered for the new Goethe-Institut location. RESTAURANT NEWS from Southern California New: Julie’s Alps in Thousand Oaks Closed: Loreley Los Angeles on La Brea The German restaurant Jeanette’s Edelweiss that was opened three years ago by film producers Jeanette Buerling and her husband Jim Milio has changed ownership and was renamed Julie’s Alps. The restaurant is offering authentic German fare while primarily using locally sourced ingredients for a fresh and healthy twist on German favorites. Live music on Fridays and Saturdays creates Oktoberfest-style fun even in summer. The German restaurant Loreley on La Brea, which opened its doors in early 2017, closed already in Spring 2018. Despite free parking and a nice Biergarten, the owner, Cologne native Michael Momm who has successfully run the Loreley in New York for many years, had apparently no luck in L.A. We were not able to get more information but the proximity to the popular Wirtshaus L.A. just a few blocks down on La Brea most likely did not help. GERMAN FEST MILWAUKEE 2018 Better than ever! It has been a while since I attended the GERMAN FEST in Milwaukee myself but looking at the recent pictures and statistics, the largest celebration of German culture on American soil has certainly been continuously thriving. More than 75,000 fans of German culture – 10 percent more than last year - flocked to the three-day festival this year, which is always held on the last weekend in July at the beautiful, tree-lined Henry Maier Festival Park bordering Lake Michigan. It is always a colorful spectacle since guests are arriving in their glamorous Karneval outfits, uniforms, and regional costumes. You might even run into a Prussian General! GERMAN FEST consists of more than 40 member societies who are active in the German-American community of Greater Milwaukee. They represent many aspects of German culture and cities like Berlin, Cologne and Munich as well as many regions of German-speaking Europe like Swabia, Bavaria, Switzerland, and Austria. The region of Pommern, former East Prussia and today part of Poland, is even represented by three organizations. All logistics, every stage, every bar, and many popular booths are organized and run merely by volunteers. “GERMAN FEST is blessed to have so many talented individuals who are willing to give their time to the festival,” states Tammy Dunn, press relations officer of GERMAN FEST. The German-American business community has embraced GERMAN FEST as well. German Brands and some US companies that were founded by German & Austrian immigrants like Coors, Leinenkugel, Haribo, Miller, Niche, Sprecher, Usinger, Weinbauer, and STIHL have supported the festival for years. For the first time, STIHL USA hosted the STIHL Lumbersports Challenge (photo. One of the most popular attractions – except for a ride with the Skyglider which provides a scenic view over the whole festival grounds – has always been the Dachshund race, spearheaded by Petra Theurich. What started out as a small race between a few “Dackel” many years ago has turned into Dachshund Derby. Proceeds of the festival are being used for future festivals and maintenance. A share is also distributed to each society that contributes volunteers. This helps many societies with their yearly fundraising campaigns. My favorite has always been the Kulturzelt (Cultural Pavilion) featuring a Handwerker area, German language games and lectures by historians and genealogy experts. Close by, you can relax at the Musikgarten, Konditorei, at a wine tasting with Weinbauer or at Niche’s Schnapps Garten. A German church service on Sunday morning, German Heritage Walking Tours and impressive fireworks over Lake Michigan makes this a well-rounded cultural affair that is worth discovering. When Stuttgart became “too small” for her, Kristina Roth packed her bags in 2003 and moved to New York City. She became a successful entrepreneur, sold her company and took a trip around the world and eventually fulfilled a lifelong dream: buying an island where only women are welcome. SuperShe – that is the name of the network Kristina Roth created about two years ago to connect independent and successful "power women." She herself is such a “super she:” First the Stuttgart native found success in the male-dominated field of computer science studies and then built a successful career as a management consultant at several multinational companies.

Very soon though Roth realized that she expected more from life and felt the need to step out of the daily grind. She just packed up her things and moved to New York with only two suitcases in tow. “At the time I did not have a grand plan, I just wanted to live like the women in ‘Sex and the City,’” she explains, looking back.

But at the height of her success Roth again had the feeling that she needed to take on something different. “I love the American expression ‘think outside the box’,“ says Roth. “I always think 'way outside the box’.” Roth then sold her firm and started to travel around the world. During her travels, she met countless other powerful women who inspired her to create a women-only network. SuperShe is a place to meet for strong, independent women who know what they want in life and in their careers.

She did love life in New York – but she still had not escaped the daily grind. That only changed when she obtained her Green Card. “The day I received my Green Card, I quit my full-time job,” Roth remembers. She was fed up with Corporate America and wanted to build something of her own.Roth promptly moved to Seattle at the end of 2006 and founded the consulting firm Matisia Consultants. Her first client: none other than Microsoft. This was the starting point of a rapid success story. In 2015 Matisia Consultants made it onto the Forbes list of Fastest-Growing Women-Owned Businesses. According to Roth the network’s events were very popular – but she did not reach a broad audience with them. That only happened when Roth dared to take another track: in September 2017, she bought a 34,000-square meter (366,000-square feet) island off the coast of Finland, which will serve as the SuperShe headquarters. The twist: the island will be a resort exclusively for women.

Since June 2018 women from all over the world can visit this luxury island. Since her visitor’s spiritual and physical well-being is as important to Roth as the networking aspect, offerings include business events as well as meditation, yoga, fitness and cooking classes. The goal is to create a place where “badass women” can get together and not only talk shop but also exercise and relax. However, to make a reservation on the island is not that easy: Only 10 women can visit at a time. To be accepted, every she must go through an exacting application process. The decision on who makes the cut lies with Roth herself. Most important criterion: the applicant’s personality. And a vacation on the island also doesn’t come cheap: a five-day all-inclusive stay runs between 3,000 and 6,000 US dollars. However, Kristina is working on some type of scholarship program where deserving women can be nominated and, if chosen, vacation on the island for free. If Roth will have similar success with the luxury island for women as she did with her consulting firm remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: this power woman will continue to make waves with her projects.

Eine solche „super she“ ist auch Roth selbst: Die gebürtige Stuttgarterin setzte sich zunächst im Männer-dominierten Informatik-Studium durch, anschließend machte sie Karriere als Unternehmensberaterin in verschiedenen internationalen Konzernen.

Im Jahr 2015 landete Matisia Consultants auf der Forbes-Liste der am schnellsten wachsenden Unternehmen mit weiblicher Führung. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte die Firma rund 250 Mitarbeiter und einen Jahresumsatz von 45 Millionen US-Dollar.

Schon bald merkte Roth jedoch, dass sie mehr vom Leben wollte und raus aus dem Alltagstrott musste. Deshalb packte sie kurzerhand ihre Sachen und zog mit nur zwei Koffern nach New York. „Damals hatte ich keine große Vision, ich wollte einfach nur leben wie die Frauen aus ‚Sex and the City‘“, erklärt Roth rückblickend.

Zwar liebte Roth das Leben in New York – dem Alltagstrott entflohen war sie aber noch immer nicht. Das änderte sich erst mit der Green Card: „An dem Tag, als ich meine Green Card erhielt, habe ich meinen Job in Festanstellung gekündigt“, erinnert sich Roth. Sie habe die Nase voll gehabt von Corporate America und wollte etwas Eigenes aufbauen. Kurzerhand zog Roth Ende 2006 deshalb nach Seattle und gründete die Unterneh-

Unterwegs begegneten ihr unzählige andere Power-Frauen, die sie dazu inspirierten, ein rein weibliches Netzwerk zu gründen. SuperShe sollte ein Treffpunkt sein für starke, unabhängige Frauen, die wissen, was sie im Leben und im Beruf wollen.

Die Netzwerktreffen waren laut Roth sehr beliebt – die breite Öffentlichkeit erreichte die Unternehmerin damit allerdings nicht. Das geschah erst, als Roth einen neuen Coup wagte: Im September 2017 kaufte sie eine 34.000 Quadratmeter große Insel vor der Küste Finnlands, die als Headquarter von SuperShe fungieren sollte. Der Clou: Die Insel sollte eine Ferieninsel nur für Frauen werden. Seit Juni 2018 können Frauen aus aller Welt die Luxusinsel besuchen. Dort werden sowohl Business-Events als auch Meditationen, Yoga, Fitness- und Kochkurse geboten. Denn neben dem Netzwerk-Gedanken ist Roth auch das geistige und körperliche Wohlbefinden der Urlauberinnen wichtig. Ziel ist es, einen Ort zu schaffen, an dem sich „badass women“ treffen und sich nicht nur über ihr Business austauschen, sondern auch gemeinsam sporteln und entspannen können. Einen Platz auf der Insel zu bekommen, ist allerdings nicht ganz leicht: Nur zehn Frauen können die Insel gleichzeitig bewohnen. Um angenommen zu werden, muss frau einen anspruchsvollen Bewerbungsprozess durchlaufen. Wer dabei sein darf, entscheidet Roth selbst. Wichtigstes Kriterium: die Persönlichkeit der Bewerberin. Zudem ist der Urlaub auf der Insel nicht ganz billig: Zwischen 3.000 und 6.000 US-Dollar kostet ein fünftägiger All-Inclusive-Aufenthalt. Immerhin: Künftig soll es auch eine Art Stipendium geben, bei dem Frauen nominiert werden können, die dann kostenfrei auf der Insel Urlaub machen dürfen. Ob Roth mit der Luxus-Insel für Frauen einen ähnlichen Erfolg haben wird wie mit ihrem Beratungsunternehmen, bleibt abzuwarten. „Leaf Peepers“ – so werden die Touristen genannt, die sich aufmachen, um das herbstliche Farbschauspiel in den Neuenglandstaaten zu bewundern. Die Laubverfärbung – im Amerikanischen „Foliage“ genannt – setzt meist Ende September im südlichen Kanada ein und zieht dann bis Anfang November immer weiter südlich von Maine und Vermont über New Hampshire, New York, Massachusetts und Rhode Island bis nach Connecticut.

MAINE

►► ACADIA NATIONAL PARK Acadia ist der nördlichste Nationalpark der USA. Durch den Park führt eine Ringstraße, die dich zu allen Aussichtspunkten und zu den Startpunkten für Wanderungen bringt. Der Park selbst ist geprägt von Wäldern, Flüssen und Seen. Am eindrucksvollsten präsentiert sich der Indian Summer hier Ende September. Auf der Spitze des Cadillac Mountain hast du eine besonders gute Sicht auf das umliegende Meer aus Laubbäumen.

VERMONT

►► GREEN MOUNTAINS Vermont gilt als der Bundesstaat mit der eindrucksvollsten Laubfärbung. Der Grund: Hier wächst der Zuckerahorn, dessen Blätter sich schon im frühen Herbst feuerrot färben, besonders häufig. Am wohl intensivsten und prachtvollsten zeigt sich der Indian Summer im Green Mountain National Forest. Auf einer Herbst-Rundreise durch die Neuenglandstaaten sollte er deshalb auf keinen Fall fehlen.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

►► WHITE MOUNTAINS Ein weiteres Must-See ist der White Mountains National Forest in New Hampshire. Charakteristisch für die „weißen Berge“ sind ihre abgerundeten Gipfel und die tiefen U-förmigen Täler, die „notches“ genannt

werden. Ein besonderes Highlight: Der Notch Train, der dich auf einer fünfstündigen Fahrt durch die Laubwälder bringt und atemberaubende Aussichten ermöglicht. Auch ein Trip auf den Mount Washington, den größten Berg New Hampshires, ist absolut empfehlenswert!

NEW YORK

►► ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS Bekannt sind die Adirondacks vor allem wegen der nach ihnen benannten Gartenstühle. Dabei hat das Gebirge, das im Norden des Bundesstaates New York liegt, noch so viel mehr zu bieten. Insbesondere die beiden großen Seen am östlichen Ende der Adirondacks, der Lake George und der Lake Champlain, sowie der Lake Placid sollten bei einem Besuch unbedingt auf der To-Do-Liste stehen.

CONNECTICUT

►► KENT FALLS STATE PARK Der Kent Falls State Park an der Route 7 in Connecticut ist für seine atemberaubenden Wasserfälle bekannt, die über zahlreiche Felsen in den Housatonic River hinabstürzen. Der Höhepunkt der „Fall Foliage“ wird in Connecticut in der Regel um den Columbus Day (am zweiten Montag im Oktober) erreicht. Flying with Babies Flying with babies can be a very daunting undertaking, but with the right preparation it won’t be as bad as it may seem. Here are a few tips from Mom’s who’ve been there.

BEFORE THE FLIGHT GENERAL TIPS Try to book a flight that corresponds with your baby’s sleep schedule (bedtime should ideally be about 1 hour after take-off). PACK YOUR DIAPER BAG WITH: ►► Sufficient diapers ►► Bottles (milk is allowed to bring through TSA control or bring dry formula to mix with bottled water) ►► A small extra bag with just diapers, a changing mat and wipes to keep in the seat pocket in front of you ►► Change of clothes for baby AND for you (at least a top) ►► Baby food (check with airlines, Lufthansa for example always has food jars on board)

BULKHEAD SEATS AND BASSINETS Most international long-haul flights offer baby bassinets in the bulkhead aisles. Some airlines allow pre-booking of those seats, but in most cases you will have to contact the airline 24-48 hours before the flight to request them. Usually younger babies have priority over older ones. The bassinets are ideal for babies 0 – 9 months. Note: US domestic flights usually do not offer bassinets. INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS ►► Check airline policy regarding bassinets (age, weight limits) ►► Reserve bulkhead and bassinet according to airline policy DOMESTIC FLIGHTS ►► Book aisle and window seat - if flight is not full, airlines will block the middle seat when they see a baby in your booking. In case the flight is full you can always switch seats with the person in the middle seat.

AT THE AIRPORT Some airlines let you skip the line or allow you to use priority check in when you travel with babies. In Germany Lufthansa has separate check in lines for families at most airports.. After check in, it’s time to get through security. The same applies here – often families with very small children can use the priority line. A FEW MORE TIPS NAVIGATING AT THE AIRPORT: ►► Wear shoes you can just slip on or off. ►► Practice folding your stroller or instruct someone else around you. ►► Bring the stroller with you to the gate for gate check-in. ►► Take your baby carrier with you to have your hands free. ►► Although airlines allow families to board early, we recommend to board last if you have very mobile kids (you are stuck in that small space long enough). ►► Do one last diaper change before boarding.

Fliegen mit Babys Wer das erste Mal eine Flugreise mit einem Baby unternimmt, braucht gute Nerven. Zum Glück wird das Unterfangen mit der richtigen Vorbereitung schnell zur Routine. Wir haben Tipps gesammelt von Müttern, die das „erste Mal“ schon hinter sich haben.

VOR DEM FLUG BULKHEAD-SITZE UND BABYSCHALEN Die meisten Überseeflüge bieten Babyschalen für die sogenannte Bulkhead-Sitzreihe an („Bulkhead“ bezeichnet die Trennung zwischen den verschiedenen Sektionen im Flugzeug). Bei manchen Fluggesellschaften kannst du den Platz und die Babyschale vorreservieren, in den meisten Fällen musst du aber die Buchungsstelle 24 bis 48 Stunden vor dem Flug kontaktieren. Je jünger das Baby ist, umso größer ist die Chance auf Erfolg. Die Babyschalen sind ideal für Babys zwischen null und neun Monaten geeignet. Flüge innerhalb der USA bieten diesen Service allerdings leider nicht an. INTERNATIONALE FLÜGE ►► Erkundige dich vor dem Flug nach den Buchungsbedingen für die Babyschale und buche im angegebenen Zeitfenster. INLANDSFLÜGE (USA) ►► Wenn ihr zu zweit fliegt, bucht einen Gang- und einen Fensterplatz. Wenn der Flug nicht ausgebucht ist, blockt die Fluggesellschaft oft den Mittelsitz für euer Baby. Falls der Flug doch ausgebucht sein sollte, tauscht bestimmt gerne jemand mit euch den Sitzplatz.

ALLGEMEINE TIPPS Versuche, deinen Flug so zu legen, dass der geplante Abflug etwa eine Stunde vor der regulären Schlafenszeit deines Babys ist. PACKE FOLGENDES IN DEINE WINDELTASCHE: ►► Ausreichend Windeln ►► Fläschchen (du darfst Milch durch die Kontrollen bringen) ►► Kleine extra Tasche mit Windeln, Wickelunterlage und Feuchttüchern, die du in der Sitztasche vor dir verstauen kannst ►► Wechselkleidung für dein Baby und für dich (zumindest ein Oberteil) ►► Babynahrung (Squeezies sind ideal)

AM FLUGHAFEN Bei einigen Fluggesellschaften können Eltern mit kleinen Kindern den Priority Check-In nutzen. An deutschen Flughäfen gibt es zumindest für Lufthansa-Flüge separate CheckIn-Schalter für Familien. Bei der Sicherheitskontrolle kannst du in beiden Ländern zunächst fragen, ob du die Priority Line nutzen darfst – je nach Flughafen ist dies kein Problem. WEITERE TIPPS FÜR DEN FLUGHAFEN: ►► Trage Schuhe, die du leicht an- und ausziehen kannst. ►► Übe vor der Reise, deinen Kinderwagen zu falten, oder bitte einen Mitreisenden um Hilfe. ►► Nimm den Kinderwagen mit ans Abflug-Gate.

CAR SEATS AND STROLLERS With most airlines you are allowed to check in one car seat and a stroller at no additional fee. However, there are also some benefits of keeping them during the flight as certain car seats are allowed on the plane if you booked a separate seat. Strollers can be checked right at the gate, which allows you the convenience of not having to carry your baby and you will get your stroller back at the gate when you reach your destination.

TAKE OFF AND DURING THE FLIGHT US airlines require you to hold your baby on your lap during take-off and landing while many international airlines give you an extra belt loop (belly belts) for small babies traveling on laps. Make sure your baby will feed during take-off and landing (bottle or breast). This will help with the pressure to their ears. Bassinet or not - make sure to use your own set of blankets or a sleep sack instead of using the airline blanket to help your baby fall asleep. As long as there are no turbulences you can always walk your baby up and down the aisles (in your carrier!). If you are traveling alone, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be shy to ask for help. Flight attendants or seat neighbors are mostly very helpful and can briefly hold your baby while you go to the bathroom. And â&#x20AC;&#x201C; try not to stress when your baby cries. It happens.

►► Nimm den Baby-Carrier mit, damit du bei Bedarf die Hände frei hast. ►► Auch wenn man als Familie normalerweise zuerst einsteigen darf, empfehlen wir, mit sehr mobilen Kindern lieber als letzte einzusteigen. ►► Wechsle vor dem Boarding nochmals die Windel. AUTOSITZE UND KINDERWAGEN Generell darfst du Autositze und Kinderwagen ohne zusätzliche Kosten einchecken. Allerdings sprechen auch gute Gründe dagegen. So sind manche Autositze auch im Flugzeug zugelassen, wenn du einen extra Sitz gebucht hast, und Kinderwagen können häufig direkt am Gate eingecheckt werden, sodass du dein Baby während der langen Wege am Flughafen nicht auf dem Arm tragen musst.

DER FLUG Bei US-Fluggesellschaften musst du dein Baby während Start und Landung auf dem Schoß halten, bei vielen internationalen Airlines erhältst du einen separaten Gurt, mit dem du das Baby am eigenen Sitzgurt festschnallen musst. Damit es mit dem Druckausgleich keine Probleme gibt, solltest du dein Kind während des Abflugs und der Landung trinken lassen (an der Flasche oder an der Brust). Außerdem empfehlen wir, eine eigene Decke oder einen Schlafsack mitzunehmen, worin du dein Baby statt der Flugzeugdecke einwickeln kannst. Solange es keine Turbulenzen gibt, kannst du dein Baby auch (in der Trage) auf- und abtragen. Wenn du alleine unterwegs bist, frage nach Hilfe. Flugbegleiter und Sitznachbarn sind meist hilfsbereiter, als man denkt, und können auch zwischendurch mal dein Baby halten, falls du kurz die Toilette aufsuchen musst. Und wenn das Baby doch mal weint? Nicht stressen lassen – die anderen Fluggäste sehen das Ganze meist viel entspannter als man selbst!

Germany’s fairytale castle Neuschwanstein in southern Bavaria is known all over the world as a symbol of idealized romantic architecture and for the tragic story of its creator. After losing sovereignty in his own kingdom, Ludwig II withdrew into his own world of myths, legends and fairytales. The castle is without doubt one of the most frequently photographed sights in Germany. Among the castle’s finest rooms are two magnificent halls, the Singers’ Hall and the Hall of the Holy Grail, in which Ludwig II united his nostalgia for the Middle Ages with the latest technology of the time. Neuschwanstein is located two miles southeast of Füssen, in the region of Allgäu. To visit Neuschwanstein or the adjacent Hohenschwangau, you have to buy tickets at the ticket center Hohenschwangau below the castles or you can make a reservation online at www.neuschwanstein.de at least two days prior to your visit. Das Märchenschloss Deutschlands Neuschwanstein im Süden Bayerns ist weltberühmt für seine idealisierte romantische Architektur und die tragische Geschichte seines Schöpfers. Nach dem Verlust seiner Macht im eigenen Königreich zog sich Ludwig II. in seine eigene Welt der Mythen, Märchen und schönen Künste zurück. Er plante sein eigenes Reich, in dem er sich als wirklicher König fühlen und bewegen konnte: seine Schlösser. Neuschwanstein ist ohne Zweifel eine der am häufigsten fotografierten Sehenswürdigkeiten in Deutschland. Zu den schönsten Zimmern des Schlosses gehören zwei prächtige Säle. Der Sängersaal und der Saal des Heiligen Grals, in dem Ludwig II. seine Nostalgie für das Mittelalter mit der neuesten Technik seiner Zeit vereinte. Neuschwanstein liegt drei Kilometer südöstlich von Füssen im Allgäu. King Ludwig II of Bavaria's fairytale palace at Linderhof is the only one he lived to see completed and the one in which he stayed at more than anywhere else. Set in the Graswang valley, this world of fantasy and flamboyance includes an illuminated artificial grotto surrounding a small lake. Linderhof Palace occupies the original site of the Königshäuschen hunting lodge which belonged to Ludwig's father, King Maximilian II. Linderhof Palace Park is a stunning example of historicist-era landscape gardening. Immediately outside the palace are baroque partitions such as garden and water parterres as well as terraces and cascades arranged in the Italianate Renaissance style. Moritzburg Palace is located close to Dresden in the state of Saxony. It is one of the most impressive baroque palaces in central Europe. Even the walk towards the castle is breathtaking. It is located in the middle of a lake and you reach it via a tree-lined avenue. The palace was originally a hunting lodge in Renaissance style. Augustus the Strong began converting Moritzburg Castle into a Baroque hunting and summer residence in 1723. One of his descendants finished the elaborate work. After visiting the palace, you can enjoy a romantic stroll to the enchanting Fasanenschlösschen (little pheasant castle) built in the rococo style. In the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, between Bingen and Koblenz, you can find a castle on average every 2.5 kilometres. But there are just a few that have survived the centuries without destruction and rebuilding. One of them is the Marksburg. It is completely preserved as a medieval fortress. on His Life and Work in the US What makes German, Austrian and Swiss people come to America? What do they love about the country and what do they miss about home? In each issue, we will introduce a German-speaking immigrant or expat. In this issue: the world-renowned architect Helmut Jahn. He has made his mark on the skylines of cities such as Chicago and Philadelphia and has devised the Munich and Bangkok airports, the Sony Center in Berlin and the Messeturm (convention center tower) in Frankfurt: Helmut Jahn is among the internationally most successful German architects. Born in the Franconia region in southern Germany, he moved to the US on a scholarship after he completed his degree in architecture at the Technical University of Munich. In 1966, he began his studies at the famous Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He originally intended to be in the US for only a year, but then he had the opportunity to join the architectural firm C.F. Murphy Associates in Chicago, of which he subsequently became a partner and ultimately the owner and chief executive. By now, the star architect has been in the United States for over 50 years. Nevertheless, the 78-year-old still has a very special relationship to his native country.

Mr. Jahn, you have offices in Chicago, Shanghai and Berlin and are managing real estate projects all over the world. Are you traveling frequently? During my professional life, I have worked at many different locations. For a while, I was mainly in New York, then my work took me back to Germany and eventually I spent a lot of time in the Far East. Most of the time, I oversaw many different projects in various cities and countries simultaneously. That is still the case, but due to the possibilities available through digital communication there is less need for me to be physically present. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get me wrong, during crucial phases of a project, I still think that an in-person presence is essential. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only way to retain control and influence over a project. But in many cases a simple conference call will do. This saves time and expenses which I can use for

those things that are truly important. I am still in Germany somewhat frequently for personal reasons. I still have friends all over and my brother lives in Munich. You have been nominated Grand Marshall of the Steuben Parade in New York this year. What do such events celebrating your roots and traditions of your native country mean to you? I have lived in the United States for the greater part of my life, my wife is American and my son was raised here. Even so, I still feel a certain connection to Germany. The participation in the Steuben Parade is a welcome opportunity to show this connection. Another aspect is that I just want to have fun with it: I have lived on the Upper East Side for many years and have walked up and down Fifth Avenue so many times.

Er hat die Skyline von Städten wie Chicago und Philadelphia geprägt und die Flughäfen in München und Bangkok, das Sony Center in Berlin und den Messeturm in Frankfurt entworfen: Helmut Jahn ist einer der international erfolgreichsten deutschen Architekten. In Franken aufgewachsen, ist er nach seinem Architekturstudium an der Technischen Universität München als Stipendiat in die USA gegangen. 1966 begann er in Chicago mit dem Studium am berühmten Illinois Institute of Technology. Ursprünglich wollte er nur ein Jahr in Amerika bleiben. Doch dann bot sich ihm die Chance, in das Architekturbüro C.F. Murphy Associates in Chicago einzutreten, von dem er später Teilhaber und schließlich Chef und Inhaber wurde. Inzwischen lebt der Stararchitekt seit über 50 Jahren in Amerika. Zu seinem Heimatland hat der 78-Jährige trotzdem noch immer ein ganz besonderes Verhältnis.

Herr Jahn, Sie haben Büros in Chicago, Shanghai und Berlin und betreuen Immobilien-Projekte auf der ganzen Welt. Sind sie viel auf Reisen? Im Laufe meines Berufslebens habe ich an den unterschiedlichsten Orten der Welt gearbeitet. Eine Zeit lang war ich hauptsächlich in New York, dann war meine Arbeit schwerpunktmäßig in Deutschland und schließlich war ich viel im Mittleren und Fernen Osten unterwegs. Grundsätzlich habe ich immer viele verschiedene Projekte in unterschiedlichen Städten und Ländern gleichzeitig betreut. Das ist auch heute noch so. Aber durch die Möglichkeiten, die einem die digitale Kommunikation bietet, muss ich viel weniger physisch anwesend sein. Verstehen Sie mich nicht falsch: In den entscheidenden Phasen eines Projektes halte ich die persönliche Präsenz noch immer für essenziell. Denn nur so kann man den Einfluss und die Kontrolle über das Projekt behalten. Aber in vielen Fällen reicht auch ein einfacher Conference Call. Das spart Zeit und Kosten und man kann die gewonnene Zeit für Dinge nutzen, die wirklich wichtig sind. Privat bin ich häufiger mal in Deutschland. Ich habe noch Freunde dort und mein Bruder wohnt in München. Sie sind in diesem Jahr zum Grand Marshall der Steuben Parade in New York ernannt worden. Was bedeuten Ihnen solche Feierlichkeiten, in denen die Wurzeln und Traditionen der alten Heimat zelebriert werden? Ich habe den größten Teil meines Lebens in Amerika gelebt, meine Frau ist Amerikanerin und auch mein Sohn ist hier aufgewach-

sen. Trotzdem verspüre ich natürlich noch eine gewisse Verbundenheit zu Deutschland. Die Teilnahme an der Steuben Parade ist einerseits eine schöne Möglichkeit, diese Verbundenheit auszudrücken. Andererseits möchte ich auch einfach ein bisschen Spaß haben: Ich habe viele Jahre auf der Upper East Side gelebt und bin die 5th Avenue in meinem Leben so oft rauf und runter gelaufen. Da dachte ich, dass es eine schöne Abwechslung sei, mal mitten auf der Straße laufen zu können und nicht immer nur auf dem Bürgersteig. Hat sich Ihr Verhältnis zu Deutschland, aber vor allem auch zum Deutschsein über die Jahre hinweg verändert? In den 60er Jahren wurde man als Deutscher in den USA sicherlich nicht überall mit offenen Armen empfangen ... Ich bin 1966 über ein Rotary-Stipendium zum Studieren nach Amerika gekommen. Damals bin ich sehr freundlich empfangen worden. Ich hatte nie das Gefühl, dass es ein Problem darstellen könnte, Deutscher zu sein. Ich denke eher, dass es immer Leute gibt, die sich gut verstehen, und solche, die sich nicht so gut verstehen – ganz gleich, wo sie herkommen, welche Hautfarbe sie haben oder welche Religion sie ausüben. Im Übrigen habe ich die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft nie angenommen. Viele Leute kommen ja nach Amerika, weil sie nirgendwo anders in der Welt ihren Platz finden. Das war bei mir nicht der Fall. Ich habe mich immer wohl als Deutscher und in Deutschland gefühlt. Dass ich die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft beibehalten

I thought it would be a nice change to be able to walk in the middle of the street and not just on the sidewalk. Did your relationship to Germany and in particular your ‘German-ness’ change over the years? In the sixties Germans were certainly not welcomed with open arms everywhere in the USA … I came to study in the United States on a Rotary scholarship. My reception here was very friendly, I never had the feeling that it could be problematic to be German. I rather believe that there are always those people who get along well and those who don’t – no matter where they are from, the color of their skin or which faith they practice. Incidentally I never became a US citizen. Many people come to America because they have no place else to go. That was never the case for me. I always felt at ease being German as well as being in Germany. The reason why I kept my German citizenship has nothing to do with being overly proud of my country of birth though. It was simply a matter of fact. When you look back on 50 years of your professional accomplishments, which building do you consider to be the absolute highlight of your career? There are several. The Sony Center in Berlin is certainly among them, also the Bayer Headquarters in Leverkusen, the Cologne Airport, the Highlight Towers in Munich as well as the Thyssenkrupp Tower in Rottweil. All these buildings are an example of the enormous progress in how buildings are constructed. All buildings you named are in Germany – coincidence? The way buildings are planned and constructed differs from country to country. In my opi-

nion, there are certain architectural possibilities in Germany which cannot be executed in other countries. German society is very engineering-focused and heavily influenced by industry, hence buildings are more progressive and technologically sophisticated. In the nineties, you frequently built in Berlin – a time when the city provided incredible urban planning possibilities. Are you satisfied with the way the German capital has developed in the last 25 years? Berlin was marked by a pioneer-spirit for many years and has accomplished a great deal during that time. In some of the newer projects I often see dullness though. There is a lot of construction going on, but not much architecture. Nothing truly daring is created. In Berlin, officials still argue whether buildings of 300 feet or more should be built. This way the city is missing chances to compete internationally as a business location by not creating structures that are attractive to investors and enterprises. If Berlin continues that way, it will remain a tourist town only. To become a global metropolis such as Paris, London or New York it must change, it must build better and higher. Exceptional cities need exceptional buildings. You are at an age when most people have long since retired. Are you considering retirement? I am not only an architect but also a passionate sailor. Not only for leisure, but I am an actual yachtsman. I have participated in large regattas for the past 20 years. As long as I can do that and have sailing as an outlet, I am not thinking of retirement. Thank you for the conversation, Mr. Jahn.

LIFELINES | Lebenslinien habe, hat allerdings nichts mit irgendeinem Stolz auf das Land zu tun. Es war für mich schlicht eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Wenn Sie zurückblicken auf die 50 Jahre Ihres Schaffens: Welches Gebäude sehen Sie als absolutes Highlight Ihrer Karriere an? Da gibt es einige. Sicherlich gehört das Sony Center in Berlin dazu, außerdem die Bayer-Zentrale in Leverkusen, der Kölner Flughafen und die Highlight Towers in München sowie der Thyssenkrupp-Testturm in Rottweil. All diese Gebäude haben einen enormen Fortschritt gebracht in der Art, wie man Gebäude baut. Alle Gebäude, die sie genannt haben, sind in Deutschland – Zufall? Die Art, wie man plant und baut, unterscheidet sich von Land zu Land. Und es ist meiner Meinung nach schon so, dass in Deutschland Dinge möglich sind, die in anderen Ländern nicht umsetzbar wären. Die Gesellschaft ist dort sehr ingenieurbezogen und stark industriell geprägt. Entsprechend

fortschrittlich und technisch anspruchsvoll sind dann eben auch die Gebäude. Sie haben in den neunziger Jahren viel in Berlin gebaut – eine Zeit, in der die Stadt unglaubliche städtebauliche Möglichkeiten bot. Sind Sie zufrieden mit der Art, wie sich die deutsche Hauptstadt in den letzten 25 Jahren entwickelt hat? Berlin war viele Jahre von einer Aufbruchstimmung geprägt und hat in dieser Zeit viel geleistet. Bei den neueren Projekten sehe ich allerdings oft eine große Langweiligkeit. Es wird zwar viel gebaut, aber es wird keine Architektur gemacht. Es entsteht nichts wirklich Mutiges. In Berlin streitet man sich immer noch darum, ob man ein Haus bauen kann, das 100 Meter hoch ist. Damit vertut die Stadt ihre Chance, im internationalen Standortwettbewerb Gebäude zu schaffen, die attraktiv sind für Investoren und für Konzerne. Wenn Berlin so weiter macht, wird es eine reine Touristenstadt bleiben. Um eine Weltmetropole wie Paris, London oder New York zu wer-

den, muss es sich ändern, muss größer und höher bauen. Bedeutende Städte brauchen bedeutende Gebäude. Sie sind in einem Alter, in dem die meisten schon lange in Rente sind. Denken Sie an Ruhestand? Ich bin ja nicht nur Architekt, sondern auch leidenschaftlicher Segler. Und zwar nicht nur Freizeitsegler, sondern richtiger Sportsegler. Seit 20 Jahren mache ich bei großen Regatten mit. DEUTSCHLERNEN im Ausland So pflegst du die deutsche Sprache deiner Kinder Wer mit kleinen Kindern ins Ausland zieht oder seine Kinder im Ausland zur Welt bringt, sollte sich frühzeitig überlegen, wie er dem Nachwuchs die deutsche Sprache näherbringen kann. Denn während die Kinder das Sprechen meist ohne Probleme erlernen, sobald Zuhause mindestens von einem Elternteil Deutsch gesprochen wird, stellt das Lesen und Schreiben viele vor eine Herausforderung. Wir geben Tipps, wie es mit der Sprachpflege klappt.

Kindern, die im Ausland aufwachsen, fällt das Deutschlernen am leichtesten, wenn sie auf eine deutsche Auslands- oder Samstagsschule gehen. Nicht alle Expats und Auswanderer haben an ihrem Wohnort jedoch die Möglichkeit, ihre Kinder auf eine solche Schule zu schicken. Deshalb sollten sie sich frühzeitig mit dem Thema Sprachpflege auseinandersetzen. Tun sie dies nicht, können es die Kinder schwer haben, wenn sie nach einigen Jahren wieder nach Deutschland zurückgehen oder wenn sie später einmal in Deutschland studieren wollen. Glücklicherweise gibt es viele Ressourcen und Materialien, die dabei helfen, die deutsche Sprache zu pflegen und zu erhalten.

LESEN UND HÖREN ►► BÜCHER Gemeinsames Lesen – am besten schon von klein auf – ist ein wichtiger Teil der Sprachförderung. Beim (Vor-)Lesen wird das Sprachgefühl verbessert und der Wortschatz erweitert. Gut, dass es einfacher geworden ist, deutsche Bücher in den USA zu erwerben. Amazon oder Globalbooks bieten eine riesige Auswahl und bei Kinderbooks kann man deutsche Kinderbücher amerikaweit ausleihen. ►► HÖRSPIELE UND -BÜCHER Manchmal ist es schwierig, Kinder im Ausland zum Lesen deutscher Bücher zu motivieren. Mehr Spaß macht es dem Nachwuchs oft, beim Lesen gleichzeitig das entsprechende Hörbuch zu hören. Audible hat eine große Auswahl ungekürzter Hörbücher, die du schnell und einfach per Download erhältst.

DEUTSCH SCHREIBEN: ARBEITSHEFTE Parallel zum Lesenlernen sollte auch das Schreibenlernen erfolgen. Durch die anerkannte Methode „Lesen durch Schreiben“, kann beides zur gleichen Zeit erfolgen. Bei diesem Prozess sind die Materialien des Jandorfverlags hilfreich. Nach der Einführung der Anlauttabelle können Kinder die Arbeitshefte Lesen durch Schreiben und die Lies Mal Hefte mit nur wenig Hilfe selbstständig bearbeiten. Der Verlag liefert ins Ausland; in der Regel kostet die Lieferung nicht mehr als zehn Euro. Empfehlenswert sind außerdem die bei Kindern sehr beliebten Stars-Hefte aus dem Oldenbourg Verlag. Hier gibt es unterschiedliche Ausgaben, etwa mit Fokus auf Lesen, auf Rechtschreibung und Grammatik, auf Naturwissenschaften oder auf Geografie und Geschichte. Ganz neu sind die Stars-Hefte zum Bereich Deutsch als Fremdsprache. Das Besondere an ihnen: Sie werden mit einem sogenannten Ting-Stift verwendet, der Audio-Inhalte abspielen kann. Auch die Reihe Deutsch als Zweitsprache aus dem Schroedel Verlag eignet sich sehr gut für den Deutschunterricht im Ausland. Viele Aufgaben regen zu Gesprächen über ein bestimmtes Thema an und sind daher vor allem für die Arbeit in einer Gruppe oder mit einem Partner geeignet. Neben dem Lesen und Schreiben solltest du dich außerdem der Rechtschreibung und der Grammatik deines Kindes zuwenden. Mit den Arbeitsheften Einsterns Schwester aus dem Cornelsen Verlag können Kinder weitgehend selbstständig und im eigenen Tempo fachorientiert arbeiten. Auch die Hauschka Lernhilfen bieten eine große Auswahl an Arbeitsheften von der Grundschule bis zur Mittel- und Oberstufe. Die Hefte sind äußerst praktisch zu handhaben: Zu jedem Thema gibt es zu Beginn des Kapitels ausführliche Erklärungen und in der Mitte des Heftes findest du einen Lösungsteil. In manchen Heften gibt es auch kleine Zwischentests.

Deutsche Fernschule Wer plant seine Kinder nach einem Auslandsaufenthalt wieder zurück ins Deutsche Schulsystem einzugliedern, für den sind die Kurse der Deutschen Fernschule sehr empfehlenswert. Die Programme kosten zwar etwas mehr, bieten aber auch einen vollständigen Unterricht, der sich nach den deutschen Curricula der Bundesländer richtet und von einer Lehrkraft persönlich begleitet wird. Die Basiskurse sind extra für Schüler konzipiert, die den Deutschunterricht schulbegleitend bewältigen müssen. Sie konzentrieren sich auf die Bereiche Rechtschreibung, Grammatik und Wortschatz. Der Vorteil im Fernunterricht ist, dass sich die Lektionen flexibel in den Alltag integrieren lassen. Am Ende des Kurses stellt die Fernschule ein Zeugnis aus, mit dem die Rückkehr ins deutsche Schulsystem kein Problem darstellt.

SPIELEN Es gibt eine große Auswahl von Sprachspielen, die Spaß machen und mit denen der deutsche Wortschatz spielerisch erweitert werden kann. So etwa Scrabble Junior, das mit dem Alter des Kindes „mitwächst“. Es hat ein doppelseitiges Spielbrett: Farben für Kinder von fünf bis sieben Jahren sowie Wörter und Bilder für die Altersstufe von sieben bis zehn Jahren. In der Reihe Mäuseschlau & Bärenstark gibt es verschiedene Spiele, etwa das Mini-Brettspiel Unsere Erde, bei dem entweder Fragen beantwortet oder lustige Aktionen ausgeführt werden müssen. Bei Können Schweine fliegen? wiederum müssen die Mitspieler Merkmalen von 60 heimischen und exotischen Tieren entdecken. Das interaktive Spiel Wer war's? hat durch die sprechende Schatztruhe einen hohen Aufforderungscharakter und die Kinder müssen zusammenarbeiten, um den Dieb zu finden. Activity und Tabu Junior sind Spiele-Klassiker, die auf jeden Fall zum Deutschsprechen anregen und allen viel Spaß machen. Gleiches gilt für Hedbanz, bei dem jeder Spieler ein Stirnband trägt, an dem eine Karte befestigt ist, die er selbst nicht sehen kann, sondern erraten muss: Bin ich ein Tier? Bin ich etwas zu Essen? Lachen garantiert. Für jüngere Kinder ist Ratz Fatz besonders empfehlenswert. Die vorgegebenen Geschichten, Gedichte und Rätsel erweitern spielerisch den Wortschatz und mit den schönen Holzgegenständen können sich die Kinder zahlreiche eigene Spiele ausdenken, die Konzentration, Sprachfähigkeit und Reaktion fördern. Vom Hersteller Lingoplay gibt es außerdem eine ganze Reihe von Kartenspielen für die Sprachförderung wie Plurale, Neben-An oder der, die das oder was?.

TECHNOLOGIE Um die deutsche Sprache deiner Kinder ideal zu fördern, solltest du unbedingt auch das reichhaltige Angebot an Webseiten, Apps und anderen Medien nutzen. Kinder wachsen mit Medien auf, kennen sich gut damit aus und sind motiviert sie zu nutzen. Viele dieser Medien haben einen hohen Aufforderungscharakter und bieten darüber hinaus direkte Rückmeldungen, Korrekturen, Erklärungen und Hilfen. ►► Internet Es gibt zahlreiche Webseiten, mit denen Kinder ihren deutschen Wortschatz spielerisch und zeitgemäß erweitern können. Bilinguale Immersionsprogramme in den USA Bilinguale Immersionsprogramme zur Förderung einer Zweitsprache werden in den USA immer beliebter. Doch das Angebot ist vielfältig und kann überfordern. Deshalb hat das Goethe-Institut jetzt ein Online-Portal ins Leben gerufen, dass über bilinguale Programme im amerikanischen Schulsystem und mehrsprachige Erziehung informiert.

Wer sich mit bilingualen Programmen im US-amerikanischen Bildungssystem beschäftigt, ist meistens schnell verwirrt von den vielen unterschiedlichen Fachbegriffen und Konzepten: One/two-way dual language programs, heritage/native language programs, developmental/maintenance bilingual programs, world language immersion programs. Bilinguale Immersionsprogramme in den USA, traditionell eng mit Einwanderungspolitik verbunden, waren primär dafür gedacht, Kinder von Einwandern an die englische Sprache heranzuführen. In den vergangenen Jahren ist jedoch ein verstärktes Interesse an der Entwicklung, Förderung und Umsetzung von bilingualen Programmen zu beobachten, das den Fokus auch auf den Erhalt der Herkunftssprache im schulischen Kontext legt. Diskussionen über bilinguale Programme drehen sich mittlerweile auch um Themen wie den Einfluss von Zweisprachigkeit für das Sozialleben und die Vorteile von der Zweisprachigkeit auf dem globalen Arbeitsmarkt. Die Verlagerung des Diskurses schlägt sich auch in Zahlen nieder. So waren in Utah allein im Jahr 2017 etwa 34.000 Schülerinnen und Schüler an rund 140 Schulen in Immersionsprogrammen eingeschrieben. In New York City werden, wie Bildungskanzler Richard Carranza kürzlich bekannt gab, im Herbst dieses Jahres rund 40 neue bilinguale Programme eröffnet. Auch die PS 18 Grundschule in Brooklyn arbeitet an der Einführung eines bilingualen Programms. Bereits seit dem Schuljahr 2017/18 wird an dieser Schule durch das Goethe-Institut New York ein Immersionsprogramm in zwei Klassen angeboten, das den Kindern einen spielerischen Zugang zur deutschen Sprache ermöglicht.

Deutsche Bilinguale Programme: Neues Online Portal vom Goethe-Institut Das neue Online-Portal „Deutsche Bilinguale Programme” des Goethe-Instituts informiert unter anderem über kostenlose bilinguale Erziehung im öffentlichen amerikanischen Schulsystem. Es entstand aus dem Bedürfnis heraus, einen zentralen Treffpunkt für drei Interessengruppen anzubieten: Eltern, Lehrkräfte und Bildungsträger. Schulleiter und Schulleiterinnen finden überzeugende Argumente für die Einführung von bilingualen Deutsch-Immersionsprogrammen. Eltern haben Zugang zu Inhalten, die ihren Kindern das Deutschlernen außerhalb der Schule erleichtern, und bekommen das nötige Werkzeug, Elterninitiativen zu gründen, um zusammen mit dem Schulbezirk bilinguale Deutsch-Immersionsprogramme aufzubauen. Lehrkräften stehen Unterrichtsmodelle und -materialien für den direkten Einsatz im Unterricht zur Verfügung. Ziel des Portals ist auch, Verbindungen zwischen der steigenden Zahl bilingualer Deutsch-Immersionsprogramme zu knüpfen, um den Austausch von Wissen und Materialien zu erleichtern. Oktoberfest Season 2018 The original “Oktoberfest” was held in Munich in 1810 in honor of the royal wedding of crown prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen right in front of the city gates. The whole town was invited to celebrate. In the following years the event was repeated (almost) every year and grew in size and attractions. In the 2nd half of the 20th century the event also became an attraction for many international tourists and receives around six million visitors each year who consume about 7.5 million liters of beer in 2 weeks time. Over the years, the tradition has become very popular in the US as well with many different events organized by towns, cultural groups, and restaurants - some last only for a day or weekend, some celebrate for several weeks. The most famous event celebrating German culture in the US is the annual Steuben Parade in New York City followed by a oneday Oktoberfest right in Central Park. The German-American Steuben Parade is held annually on the third Saturday in September. It was founded in 1957 by German immigrants and German-Americans — one of the largest ancestral groups living in the United States, who wanted to keep the traditions of their homeland alive. The Parade brings together the entire German-American community. Groups include members from social and cultural clubs, sport clubs, religious groups and the masons. Each year, several groups from Germany visit their American friends, among them musical clubs, carnival organizations and Schützen corps.

INGREDIENTS • 1 lb brie cheese or 1 lbcamembert cheese, coarsely chopped • 6 ounces cream cheese • 1⁄4 cup butter , cut into small pieces • 1 teaspoon caraway seed (optional) • 1 pinch sweet paprika • salt &amp; freshly ground black pepper • 1⁄4 cup diced Spanish onion • 1⁄3 cup thinly slicedred onions (for garnish) • 1 table spoon chopped chives

This Bavarian classic can easily be re-created with ingredients you can find in every US supermarket. It’s a perfect dip for your next BBQ, as an after-work snack with a cold beer or give it a try at your Oktoberfest party this year.

Place the brie or camembert (for example Champignon Camembert) in a medium bowl. Add the cream cheese, butter, and caraway seeds. Add paprika, and salt and pepper to taste; beat well to combine. In a strainer, rinse the diced onion under cold water. Drain and transfer to a clean kitchen towel, squeezing out all the liquid. Fold the onions into the cheese mixture. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours, allowing the flavors to melt, or store, covered and refrigerated, for up to 4 days. 8. Sprinkle with chives and garnish with red onion rings Best served with soft bretzels or any type of German bread and a cold beer!

Bauhaus-Stadt Dessau Mit wenig Aufwand bezahlbaren Wohnraum für viele Menschen schaffen – das gehört zu den Ideen des Bauhauses, einer der einflussreichsten Architektur- und Designschulen des 20. Jahrhunderts. 1919 in Weimar gegründet, startete das Bauhaus in Dessau richtig durch. Nirgendwo in Deutschland sind heute mehr dieser Bauten zu bewundern. Check-in-Moderatorin Nicole Frölich besucht in Dessau die Meisterhäuser und die Wohnsiedlung Törten, isst im Ausflugslokal Kornhaus an der Elbe und übernachtet im Ateliergebäude des Bauhauses, dem früheren Studentenwohnheim. Ideal, um sich auf das Jubiläum im kommenden Jahr einzustimmen – 100 Jahre Bauhaus.

Sie kommen aus Frankreich und haben weltweit schon viele Menschen begeistert – die riesigen Marionetten der Straßentheatergruppe „Royal de Luxe“. Drei Tage lang werden sie die Stars auf den Straßen im niederländischen Leeuwarden sein. Die Stadt in Friesland ist eine der beiden Kulturhauptstädte Europas in diesem Jahr. Das Motto für das Kulturjahr in Leeuwarden-Friesland lautet „Iepen mienskip“, friesisch für „offene Gemeinschaft“. Rund 300 Veranstaltungen sind geplant – nicht nur im rund 100.000 Einwohner zählenden historischen Leeuwarden, sondern in ganz Friesland. Die platte Landschaft unter dem dramatischen tiefen Himmel mit vielen Kanälen, malerischen Dörfern, Deichen und dem Wattenmeer sollen eine grandiose Bühne sein. Tausende Menschen beteiligen sich an dem Programm. Die Organisatoren in Leeuwarden erwarten vier Millionen Besucher. Die riesigen Marionetten werden vom 17. bis 19. August in Friesland unterwegs sein, sollen dort sogar essen und übernachten. Euromaxx wird die spektakulären Bilder einfangen. ab MO 20. August 20:00

Gefahren des Elektroschrotts Ein Riesengeschäft für die einen, ein tödliches Risiko für die anderen – elektronischer Müll. Computer, Mobiltelefone und Fernsehgeräte tauschen viele regelmäßig aus und entsorgen sie. Die Abfallprodukte der modernen Kommunikationsgesellschaft enthalten begehrte Materialien wie Kobalt und Kupfer. Recycelt werden sie oft von den Ärmsten der Armen auf riesigen Deponien in Afrika. In Ghana zum Beispiel haben sich Arbeiter darauf spezialisiert, am offenen Feuer weder mit Schutzkleidung noch Atemmasken wertvolle Stoffe aus dem Elektroschrott zu lösen. Einige von ihnen werden krank oder sterben an den Folgen der giftigen Dämpfe. Oldtimer-Rennen am Strand Am ersten Wochenende im September wird die dänische Ferieninsel Rømø zum Hotspot der Oldtimerszene. Statt Strandidylle und Meeresrauschen bestimmen dann röhrende Motoren das Inselleben. Beim „Rømø Motor Festival“ wird der weiße Sandstrand zur Rennstrecke für Autos und Motorräder bis Baujahr 1947. Exakt 201 Meter lang ist die Piste, auf der die Oldtimer zeigen können, was in ihnen steckt. Wer am schnellsten fährt, gewinnt. Starten darf jeder so oft, wie er oder sie will.
