Will A Transfer On Death Deed (Todd) Be An Effective Tool For Your Estate Planning?

Is It A Secure Way To Pass Your Real Property To Your Loved One?

The purpose of the Transfer on Death Deed (TODD) is to transfer your real property at your death to the person of your choosing without probate, making the transfer process quicker and less expensive.

Some Benefits of a Transfer on Death Deed are Simplicity and Flexibility

The TODD simplifies the transfer process, eliminating the need for probate court involvement. TODD can save time, money, and reduce stress for the property owner and their beneficiaries. It can be revoked or modified at any time by the property owner. This flexibility allows for changes to be made in response to life events such as marriage, divorce, or the death of others.

Some of the Complications and Issues

Created by using TODD

Unable to Sell or Use as Collateral for Loan

Title companies do not like TODD and often will not provide title insurance. Title insurance is required if someone is applying for a loan and using the property as collateral, such as to purchase the property, pay outstanding taxes,

Bespoke by GJCD, is an interior design firm and retail store located in the heart of the Heights at 501 West 11th Street and is a onestop-shop for all your design needs.

Purchased in 2019, this beautifully restored pale pink 1920s four-square is one of Houston Heights’ gems that was masterfully restored and designed for multi-use purposes.

The newly renovated project is divided into retail and office space, shared between Bespoke by GJCD and Houston Heights’ leading remodeling and restoration company, Bungalow Revival.

Bungalow Revival, founded in 2003 by Gilbert Joseph Perez with business partner Nick Eronko, specializes in the preservation of Houston’s historical gems, taking pride in meticulous craftmanship with the acknowledgment of historical authenticity with a realistic understanding of the need for modern amenities.

or make improvements. Some title companies refuse to insure the title until two years after the owner’s death; therefore, the person receiving the property cannot sell or refinance it for the first two years. This creates more problems if the current mortgage cannot be paid and it goes into foreclosure.

Creditors’ Claims - A TODD does not protect the property from creditors’ claims. Unpaid creditors have two years after the owner’s death to bring the matter into probate court to seek payment; therefore, your loved ones may be involved with the probate process.

Potential Conflict - Conflicts may arise if multiple beneficiaries are named in the TODD.

Ineffective - If TODD fails to comply with all requirements, the TODD may not transfer title to your property and probate will not be avoided. You may not have a Will in place since you thought it unnecessary. Additionally, a TODD is effective only for the real property listed in the TODD and will not transfer any other real or personal property of the Decedent.

Gilbert Joseph Perez’s passion for design combined with his knowledge of preservation and charming nods to the past, has made him one of Houston’s top leading designers and an expert in his field. With over 30 years of experience, his curated eye for design and love for traveling has made Bespoke by GJCD a unique shopping experience for the residents of The Heights and Houstonians.

Bespoke by GJCD, carries a wonderful selection of one-of-a-kind gifts and home décor items. From American vintage, mid-century furniture and glassware, lighting, custom furniture and drapery, decorative pillows and art from local Houston artist to sustainable handmade goods from craftspeople from around the world.

Visit Bespoke by GJCD and browse our ever-changing store and learn more on how we may help

Understanding the specific requirements and potential implications of utilizing a TODD is crucial, which is why seeking legal advice is highly recommended.

Are your spaces bringing you a sense of wellness and healthy living?

It’s believed that next to teeth, the eyebrows are the most important features on any face. Eyebrow trends come and go, from thin and sharp to bold and bushy à la Cara Delevingne and basically every other model who’s been hot in the past few years.

Are you ready for a change in your home office or commercial space?

The environment that we live and dwell is vital to our well-being. Here at KCDCO we specialize in room dynamics. We blend color and texture along with metals and elements of wood to bring harmonic responses inside your wellness. Knowing how a room is to function, we use creativity to develop the pathways into design.

Our homes should bring wellness, harmony and use the room’s dynamics to maximize your enjoyment and ensure success. Bringing in our many elements of design, it creates harmony in the cohesive flow in your dwelling.

We would love to hear your dreams and thoughts about your project. Would you drop us a line if this is intriguing to you? For our clients who love modern design, we believe we can deliver for you. Example, our kitchen remodels feature waterfall countertops, which add a high-end feature along with the coffee bar near the peninsula. Both bring wow factors and trending design focal points.

Email us at kcontemporarydc@gmail.com and ask for our design style quiz. This quiz helps you sort out what you like and do not like. This is our first step of introduction to our clients. Our next step is our working consultation in your home or commercial space. After these two steps, we are ready to begin your design process.

Our design office is located in the Spring Street Studios, in the Art District, 1824 Spring Street, Suite 133. Being near the Heights area is important to our team. We love the energy and art inspiration of our office. You are welcome to stop by and chat with us about your space.

But the latest trend we can’t get enough of is microblading, a new tattoo technique that fills brows out or reshapes them by drawing on tiny lines that look like individual hairs. We know what you’re thinking: tattooed eyebrows? No way. But hear us out. Microblading leaves brows looking natural and takes years off of your face! It sounds terrifying, and there’s this stigma of grandma’s blue arch eyebrows, but these are completely different.

Microblading is done with a handheld tool made out of needles that puts pigment into the skin, but doesn’t go as deep as a normal tattoo would.

It’s also semi-permanent. Your microbladed brows should last between two and three years.

Having wrapped up the summer with several community - commercial and residential projects under our belt, we are excited to unveil a huge blue tile mural for Clark’s on Montrose. (stayed tuned)

Between the 1920’s and the 1950’s, Houston used blue and white, unglazed mosaic tiles inlaid in curbs to indicate addresses and street names.

As Houston grows and continues to rebuild, these pieces of history are quickly disappearing. Curb Appeal Blues is working with the Blue Tile Project to bring back the Blue Tile as a symbol of Houston’s support of Historic Preservation, local business, and the arts.

These are a great permanent replacement for the painted address numbers on your curb, and an excellent gift for the person who has it all! Our mosaics and sign materials are all produced in the USA and assembled locally.

Why choose Historic Houston?

With increasing interest for greener buildings and the adoption of green building practices and LEED certifications for new residential construction, reclaiming, recycling and the reuse of building materials by residential builders has seen resurgence across the country and in Houston. As cities across the country struggle to recycle paper and plastics, Historic Houston, a local non-profit, has been providing Houston with an important recycling solution for the last 20 years. Dedicated to the preservation and conservation of Houston’s architecture and architectural building resources, Historic Houston’s Deconstruction Program successfully reclaims useable building materials from houses slated for demolition to prevent that material from entering the waste stream. (There is also a substantial charitable gift to have Historic Houston deconstruct a home to reclaim the building material!)

Historic Houston’s Deconstruction Program began in 2002 and focuses on reclaiming historic building materials from houses slated for demolition. Historic Houston’s trained salvage crew meticulously “unbuilds” or deconstructs the house to remove the valuable, structural and non-structural historic building components, such as doors, windows, floors, interior shiplap, exterior siding, light and plumbing fixtures, and lumber to divert this

costs while diverting the material from landfills.

material from entering Texas landfills. The Salvage Warehouse provides an outlet where Historic Houston’s members can purchase the reclaimed material and encourages the reusing and recycling of a wide variety of materials.

Elevate Your Living Space with Artwork: A Perfect Blend of Beauty and Expression

When it comes to making a house truly feel like a home, the role of artwork cannot be underestimated. Art has the power to transform any living space, adding depth, personality, and a unique touch that reflects your taste and style. Whether you’re a seasoned art collector or just beginning to explore this world, incorporating artwork into your home can breathe new life into your surroundings. From paintings to sculptures, photography to mixed media, the options are

vast and varied. The key is to choose pieces that resonate with you on a personal level. A well-selected piece of art can become the focal point of a room, sparking conversations and drawing the eye. It can set the tone for the entire space, guiding the color palette and overall design aesthetic.

For those seeking to infuse modernity into their home, contemporary pieces with bold colors and abstract forms can create a striking contrast against minimalist interiors. On the other hand, classic artwork can add a touch of timeless elegance to traditional settings, offering a sense of history and culture.

Artwork isn’t limited to just wall hangings. Sculptures and installations can be strategically placed to create a sense of movement and intrigue, encouraging exploration and engagement within your living space. Additionally, incorporating local or emerging artists’ work can not only support the arts community but also provide a fresh perspective that resonates with your locale.

If you’re thinking of selling or buying a home to further elevate your art-appreciating lifestyle, consider reaching out to us at

Revilo Real Estate.

With a reputation for understanding the intricate dynamics of both the real estate, design and art, we can help you find a property that offers the perfect backdrop for your artistic endeavors. If you’re selling, we can assist in highlighting your home’s unique artistic features, attracting potential buyers who appreciate the fusion of art and living space.

Artwork is the bridge between the mundane and the extraordinary in-home design. It adds depth, character, and a personal touch that makes your living space truly your own. With the right choice of art, your home can become a gallery of self-expression, reflecting your passions and style. And if you’re considering taking your passion for art and design to a new home, don’t hesitate to contact Revilo Real Estate for expert assistance in finding or selling your art-enhanced property.

Mini Murals Houston

We have all seen them. I assume that they are the most prolific, assessable form of public art in our city. The painted traffic/electrical boxes, or mini-murals on the street corners of our city, are the result of the coordinated efforts of The City of Houston and UP Art Studio. UP Art Studio is a public art and creative placemaking consulting firm founded in Houston in 2012, facilitating art projects for urban and contemporary artists, communities, corporations, and municipalities, locally and nationally.

Mini Murals is an award-winning program of UP Art Studio that uses the electrical utility boxes on street corners as “blank canvases” for mini pieces of art, mostly by local artists. Mini Murals instill civic pride while beautifying neighborhoods and making cities more inviting places to visit, live, work, and do business. Started in Houston, Texas in 2012, the program has grown to other cities. UP Art Studio has produced and installed more than 300 Mini Murals – with more continuously in development.

The firm has successfully managed hundreds of projects. The firm facilitates transformative award-winning projects – achieving the goals of its mission of “Civic Pride through Civic Art” through collaborative efforts with artists and the people in communities. They facilitate projects in communities nationally, engaging people and achieving community development via the work of local and international artists.

The principals and founders, Noah Quiles

and Elia Quiles, are a husband and wife team who curate, create, manage, and implement public art plans and projects. Together, they and their associates offer proven experience in all areas of program and project management and delivery. They are passionate about harnessing the power of art and placemaking – and the creativity of artists – to uplift people, neighborhoods, and underserved areas.

Elia Quiles leads the business side of UP Art Studio. As a project manager, Elia manages the business side, bolstered by the experience as the Marketing Director for a global real estate firm.

Noah Quiles directs the creative side of UP Art Studio. He also leads the logistics and technical aspects of project delivery. Noah has been in the street art world for over 25 years. He also leads on issues related to graffiti abatement, maintenance, and installation restoration and preservation.

During the Covid break, they still continued to do a few Mini Murals on cabinets that are owned by other entities such as Harris County, TxDOT, and other municipalities (i.e. League City).

“We are deeply proud and immensely excited about the new contract with the City of Houston for the Mini Murals program. At UP Art Studio, this program symbolizes our commitment to transforming communities with art, bringing creativity to every corner,

and ensuring that everyone can experience the joy of public art. Every mural tells a story, and we’re honored to help write those narratives.”

Let’s Meet a Few of our Artists

Shelbi Nicole, originally from Oklahoma City, was aware from a very early age that painting and drawing were essential to her identity, she continually explored different shapes and forms of abstract art through her formative years. By age 18, Shelbi Nicole relocated to France, where she had access to a range of art museums, and truly started to explore herself as an artist.

Noah & Elia Quiles

“I am honored to have been selected as one of the original few artists asked to help spearhead the Mini Murals award-winning civic art program with UP Art Studio. We got to paint the first boxes in the city and I helped Noah and Elia with the first fundraiser for the project. The first boxes I painted were back in 2014/2015 ‘ish and have painted many more since then; even my most recent one just this year in Rice Village. I have loved watching the addition of hundreds of new boxes over the last 9 years added by so many amazing artists. The experience of painting them is so fulfilling, as people get excited when one comes to their area of town and love to honk or even stop to thank you for adding some beautiful color to the landscape! I am looking forward to helping with more in the future and can not wait to see where they pop up next.”

Shelbi Nicole has painted almost a dozen mini murals around town. They can all be viewed at https://minimurals.org/artists/ as well as the work of the other artists who have contributed to this project.

Joy Matheson - “I started painting murals professionally in 2002 after a long career in

retail and recruiting. I named the business Scribbles Murals because I originally wanted to focus JUST on children’s murals when I had small children. However, over the years my portfolio has greatly expanded and now I do all types of murals, signage and fine decorative finishes.

I am blessed to stay busy doing what I love and stay booked 6-8 weeks in advance working in both residential and commercial settings. My website has a portfolio of select projects, but I update my social media sites with current work as I complete it.

I first applied with UP Art Studio and was selected to participate in the mini mural program in 2018. To date, I’ve painted 20 boxes with a couple more scheduled for later this year: one in League City and another at HFD Station 13 in Houston.

To date, my favorite mini mural I’ve done is the one at Canal & Sampson. The design prompts were to just tie into the culture of the district so I decided to create a large-scale

Mexican Embroidery pattern but, included as the main focal point, a Sacred Heart motif; paying tribute to Our Lady of the Guadalupe Catholic Church, the first Mexican-American Church in Houston established in 1911.

Another fun experience was painting the Houston Oilers box at Woodway and Sage. Ray Childress stopped by and I got an autograph and photo op with him. When we paint these boxes, people honk, wave and shout their appreciation. It’s good to know the program is so well loved and received.”

So far, Joy has painted more than 400 murals, mostly throughout the vast Houston area, including public spaces like interstate highways, bridges, buildings, museums, churches, schools, and more. In addition to her mural work, she participates in international street painting and street art festivals nationwide and around the world.

Many of the artists have a style and theme, like Anat Ronen, whose work just “pops” at you, due to the brilliant colors she has used in her over 3 dozen boxes. Anat is a self-taught

Olympic silver medal and a Junior Olympic World and National gold medal. In 1999 he won the world title at the 1999 World Amateur Boxing Championships in his home town. His box is located on the corner of Calvacade and Hardy.

Also honored is Monica Katrice Roberts Painted by Brad Pritchett and Katherine Ligon. An African-American blogger, writer, and transgender rights advocate. She was the founding editor of TransGriot, a blog focusing on issues pertaining to trans women, particularly women of color. Roberts’ coverage of transgender homicide victims in the United States is credited for bringing national attention to the issue.

Though not a mini mural, the mural on the wall of Houston Fire Station 20 located on the corner of Navigation and the street named in his honor, Staff Sergeant Macario Garcia warrants a mention here. It is not only a striking memorial to an American hero, but a testimony to the diverse tapestry of our history.

artist, focusing on murals and street painting. Her professional artistic phase started in 2009, almost by mistake. I especially like her Crayon Boxes, located at Airline and Hartwicke and another at Bellaire and Cook. Anat’s website: www.anatronen.com. Many of these boxes are used to celebrate the heroes in our lives. Dependent upon your politics, there is a box of Barrack Obama at the corner of West Orem at Hiram Clarke, or John Wayne.

If you are a boxing fan, you might know about Ricardo “Rocky” Juárez, an American former professional boxer. He is a former WBC Silver featherweight champion and a multiple-time world title challenger. Juarez was known over his career for his aggressive fighting style and incredible durability; in 11 defeats he was never stopped. Juarez had a lustrous amateur career with a 145–17 record, which included a 68 fight winning streak, a Featherweight

discrimination after his service to his country although he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge by the U.S., as well as the medal of Mérito Militar in Mexico (the equivalent to the U.S. Medal of Honor).

On November 27, 1944, García was an acting squad leader in his platoon, which found itself engaged in combat against the German troops in the vicinity of Grosshau, Germany. Realizing that his company could not advance

because it was pinned down by enemy machine gun fire, Garcia, on his own initiative, went ahead alone, destroying two enemy emplacements and capturing four prisoners. Despite being wounded himself, he continued to fight on with his unit until the objective was taken. “Only then did he permit himself to be removed for medical care,” his Medal of Honor citation states.

Researching these articles has made me aware of the great art we live amongst each day. From the sculptures that line many of the trails in Memorial Park, scattered through downtown, Eclectic Menagerie Park - Sculpture Park near 288 and Alameda, to the serenity of the Police Officers’ Memorial on Memorial Drive, just outside of downtown, Houston is finally catching up with other cities with public art and culture. Do a little research

and enjoy what our city leaders have presented us with. UP Art Studio has partnered with multiple area hotels, Houston BCycle, Mister McKinney’s Historic Houston, and the Houston History Bus to create “Mini Murals Tours”, ranging from self-guided bicycle and driving tours to organized artist-led tours. What Are All The Dental X-Rays All About?

Radiation is a big topic in healthcare and dentistry is certainly not excluded from this matter. Both dentists and orthodontists must have certain radiographs to diagnose and create a proper treatment plan. We often get questions from patients and parents regarding which x-rays are necessary and what exactly they are for.

The first thing we like to discuss with our patients is minimizing radiation exposure. We only take x-rays when necessary, but we also decrease exposure by covering patients with lead aprons to protect sensitive tissues and using state of the art technology such as digital machines that are calibrated and checked on a regular basis. The amount of radiation used in each dental x-ray is minimal compared to any other medical technology such as MRI or CT scans. For example, 2 regular dental x-rays have 0.002 mSV (effective dose), for dental panoramic x-rays it is 0.007mSV, while medical head CT scans deliver 2mSV. One airplane flight provides more radiation than yearly exposure for high-risk dental patients.

That said, we do need to take x-rays as we cannot see many things on clinical examinations alone. Our doctors need to see between the teeth to diagnose cavities starting in that particular area. Frequency of those x-rays depends on patient’s risk for cavities

such as diet, oral hygiene, and previous decay. These are the most common and frequent dental radiographs, but also ones with the lowest radiation exposure. We also sometimes take x-rays to check on the development of permanent teeth as well as to check for pathology such as abscess formation on an injured tooth. All these x-rays are intraoral and taken with small x-ray sensors that patients bite on.

Some x-rays are extraoral with patients biting on a small stick for stabilization, but the machine stays outside of the patient’s mouth. Both the pediatric dentistry and orthodontic sides of our practice take panoramic x-rays when needed. Those radiographs do not diagnose cavities but check for shape and direction of eruption of permanent teeth, wisdom teeth formation, as well as for any bone pathology. We also check the shape of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prior to initializing any orthodontic intervention. For pediatric dental purposes, these x-rays are taken at around 7, 12 and 17 years of age and we share them with the orthodontic team. Our orthodontists might prescribe a panoramic x-ray throughout orthodontic treatment as well to check on progress.

Another extraoral x-ray taken by our orthodontic team is called cephalometric

x-ray. It is a side view of the jaw that allows the orthodontist to determine the best way of aligning dental arches and predicting jaw growth. This x-ray is taken prior to treatment and sometimes might be also taken as a follow-up up or at the end of your braces process.

All these radiographs are prescribed and carefully reviewed by our doctors and shared for common pediatric dental and orthodontic patients to minimize radiation exposure for our patients. Please feel free to contact our team to find out more about x-rays and come see us to keep those beautiful teeth healthy, straight, and clean!

I have been selling homes in Houston for most of my adult life, and many times when I am helping new Houstonians, they have a great deal of hesitation about moving here. I always tell them to give it a year. Houston has a very special way of growing on you. It is dynamic, diverse, friendly and has so much to offer including the arts, theater, museums and the largest medical center in the world.

Right now, it might be hard to imagine checking out all the sculptures and graffiti art all around

town, so I am going to show you just a small sampling of my favorites. According to the Houston Chronicle, Houston is home to over 750 graffiti art walls and others sources say it is closer to 1,000. All our art and sculptures reflect our unique culture. The iconic “We Love Houston” sign located in Eado stands at 28’ tall and was made by our famous sculpturer David Adickes.

There are so many murals in the Heights, and the top of your list should be the “Greetings from Houston” classic painted by Daniel Anguilu. It is a great backdrop for your visitors to do a selfie!

Buffalo Bayou is full of hidden treasures, and some not so hidden. Of course, there is the famous “Dandelion Fountain” off Allen Parkway and Waugh by artist Will Canady. A

great time to see this is at sunset, as you can also watch the estimated 250,000 bats come out from the Waugh bridge to feast on our mosquitos. Just a few blocks down are the seven “Tolerance” sculptures by Jaume Plensa.

A few minutes away in downtown you will find a whole new series of massive murals as well as great sculptures like the one at the GRB Convention Center called “Wings over Water” by artist Joe O’Connell. As you can see, I like to visit many of these in the evenings because it is cooler, and the lighting adds another dimension to the art.

Our Annual Home Tour

Living in the city is wonderful while making your living and growing your family. There are so many fun and exciting things to do! Then there is the time when taking a country drive and seeing what life offers in quite small towns, pastures filled with horses and cattle and the history these small towns have to offer.

One such town is Chappell Hill, Texas, the “River Oaks” of Texas and the beginning of the footsteps into the hill country.

This tiny town of Chappell Hill offers great shopping, a garden center filled with beautiful plants and yard art, a strong history of Texas and a wonderful garden club, Chappell Hill Garden Club, which just celebrated their 15th year anniversary as being a club.

Thistle Home

One of the highlights for the year in Chappell Hill is their Annual Christmas Home Tour sponsored by the Chappell Hill Garden Club. Each year the Club opens five to six homes to tour the second Saturday in December. This year the date will be December 9, 2023, from 10am-5pm. On this magical day, you will find Main Street decorated with holiday spirit, shops filled with holiday items and everyday gifts, wonderful restaurants, a great museum and so much more to highlight the season.

This year there will be six homes on the tour, each different from the other. You will find a beautiful historical home with an outside pizza oven and, every person’s dream, a wine guest house. Another home is located on top of a hill with a stunning modern look. You will also tour a new home, an event venue and, the final home, boasts a true weekend country

design with a pool - a fun family house and grandmother’s original home. Several homes will have you in love with over-the-top decorations.

Come spend the day in Chappell Hill, enjoy this small town, with a big heart, which offers great food, lots of shopping, a garden center with holiday plants and several upscale decorating locations filled with holly, holiday cheer and lots to fill your Christmas needs.

Tickets can be purchased at Bluebonnet House or from Club Members until Dec 7th., after Dec. 7 you can purchase the day of the event at Bluebonnet House. materials such as high-quality and properly treated concrete, durable natural stones like granite or travertine, or resilient porcelain tiles.

2 Safety & Functionality

We hopefully will soon be putting the brutal heat of the past few months behind us for the year, but living in Houston, it’s only a matter of time until the heat and humidity return. That means it’s never too early to start planning for the summer of 2024. By starting the pool planning process now, you can make sure your new pool is all ready to go when things really start heating up next year. There’s a lot to consider when building out a pool and Katelyn Moore (our in-house designer here at Boulevard Realty!) recommends 5 important things to keep in mind as you start your pool journey.

5 Things to Remember When Picking Materials for Your Pool

The materials you choose should provide a non-slip surface to prevent accidents, especially in pool areas prone to wetness. Look for materials with textured finishes or consider adding non-slip coatings to ensure a secure footing.

3 Maintenance

Select materials that are easy to clean and maintain. Smooth surfaces and non-porous materials like glass tiles or fiberglass are less prone to algae or mineral buildup, making them easier to keep clean. Additionally, consider materials that resist staining, fading, or damage from pool chemicals, as this will save you time and effort in the long run.

4 Aesthetics

5 Budget

Set a realistic budget for your pool project and choose materials that fit within that framework. There is a wide range of materials available, varying in cost, so prioritize your needs and allocate your budget accordingly.

Wondering if a pool is right for your backyard or considering making other updates to your home? I’m here to help! Don’t hesitate to reach out by phone 713.829.3052 or email cynthia@cynthiamullins.com.

Durability & Longevity

Pools are exposed to various elements like water, chemicals, and weather conditions, so it’s crucial to choose materials that can withstand these factors over time. Opt for

Choose materials that complement your overall design vision and style. Consider the color, texture, and pattern of the materials and how they will harmonize with the surrounding landscape and architectural elements. You may opt for natural stones to create a timeless and elegant look, or go for vibrant ceramic tiles to add a pop of color and personality.

Personal Style in Home

Is It Finally Time to Ditch Design Trends and Embrace Your Personal Style?

Almost 3 decades ago, HGTV launched its lineup of home improvement and design shows. Since that time, consumers have had access to the latest trends in home style and millions of viewers have enjoyed trying new designs in their own homes.

Unfortunately, this has also led to the pressure to conform to the latest fad. Inexpensive big box home stores have made changing style more affordable, but these cookie-cutter rooms have left many homes lacking any sense of personal style.

Design trends can be inspiring. It’s fun to add a new color or texture to a room. Style magazines and TV programs offer fresh ideas and aesthetics to try. The goal should be to try one or two new things to add spark to the space. We’ve all seen the result of design overload, whether it is a farmhouse-styled urban loft or a slick Scandinavian modern located in the country. Little about these homes reflects the style and personality of their owners, much less the neighborhood in which they are located.

Capturing personal style is the key to a warm and inviting home. By designing a space that incorporates lifestyle, there’s always room for the fascinating vase found on vacation or a bright, bold rug that caught the eye.

Rather than chase the latest update, building a timeless environment offers a home that the owner will love and appreciate for years to come. It may finally be time to ditch the trend-driven approach to decorating and embrace our personal style. A beautiful and welcoming home is the best design there is.

Heights Dermatology is proud to announce that they are the first dermatology group in Houston, and second in the state, to incorporate the most advanced technology to help the group’s providers detect melanoma earlier, when it is almost 100% curable.

Nevisense is the only FDA-approved device to evaluate atypical moles that are not obvious benign spots or melanomas, guiding more precise biopsy decisions during skin cancer checks. Nevisense is clinically proven to improve diagnosis of early melanoma in atypical moles that are not clearly malignant or benign.

As an innovative practice, Heights Dermatology has a history of providing its patients with state-of-the-art equipment designed to deliver the very best results. Patients value the role of Nevisense to help catch early melanomas in real time during the practice visit. Since they can be stressful, patients trust their providers to be as thorough as possible during skin checks, especially for those who have a history of melanoma and biopsies, or who are at risk for melanoma.

Many patients are afraid of, or are uncomfortable with, the prospect of biopsy, especially if the mole is in an area that is cosmetically sensitive, e.g., chest or face. Heights Dermatology is proud to offer its patients the very best in dermatologic care.

Take a Tour - Little Free Libraries in the Heights

The Laura Meadows Library, 946 Highland St. Laura Meadows has a blue composite library purchased through the LFL website and is assembled with plastic lumber made out of recycled milk jugs. Laura is proud of the fact that her charter number is 5407. Considering there are over 150,000 LFLs worldwide - that is impressive.

Her first Library was made of wood with splatter paint finish installed in 2014. She wanted to encourage her dyslexic son to read and thought it would also encourage other “reluctant” readers.

Laura said the unexpected is always to be expected with an LFL. The Meadow’s Library was vandalized and set fire by area teens early on, but constables caught them. She’s found very questionable books left behind, toys, unopened beer cans, even a pair of flip flops. Her LFL has been part of scavenger hunts, LFL tourists have stopped to take photos, and once, she was book bombed! The Library was filled to overflowing with a popular children’s book.

Laura told me the best unexpected result of having an LFL is the social aspect. Because of the Library, they’ve gotten to know all of their neighbors.

In the Heights Pages summer issue, I covered the amazing diversity of public art viewable in yards throughout the Heights. Anyone taking a self-guided tour (or just driving) through these neighborhoods looking for art will undoubtedly notice the plethora of Little Free Libraries.

Little Free Library (LFL) is a nonprofit based in St. Paul, Minnesota with a mission of building community, inspiring readers and expanding book access for all. As of April 2023, there were more than 150,000 registered Little Free Libraries in all 50 states, all 7 continents, and 120 countries.

Those interested in starting their own Little Free Library can purchase one or register their own and get an official charter sign and number.

An unofficial count, by yours truly, came up with over 3 dozen LFLs all over the Heights. I reached out and spoke to several neighbors with official Libraries and a few library owners that are unregistered. The numbers included with the name is the chartered number with LFL and the numerical order registered.

The LFL website is extremely well done and informative but the app is amazing. Download it at littlefreelibrary.org, search your area and find info, photos, check in and fav your favorites. Find the following LFLs on the app by charter number listed. The app made my tour for this article super easy and fun.

Little Yellow Submarine Library, 713 Pecore St. Many people choose to build their own LFL. Casey Ellison told me that his wife wanted one for Christmas and he believed nobody used them. But when he suggested he build a Little Yellow Submarine Library she said he couldn’t build it!

“Challenge accepted,” Casey said. “It did take 5 months for me to finally have time to get it done, but it got done. That was 8 years ago and since then we added a second one for children’s books. We’ve had wedding parties take photos next to it, Disney had the star from “A Wrinkle in Time” put a book in and post, and a couple other signed books from authors. It apparently was a very popular spot during the Pokémon Go craze. It really feels like it has become part of the neighborhood.”

“Our boys are both at Travis now and when we meet new people and the topic of “where do you live” comes up and we answer, “the yellow submarine library”, it’s always followed by a “NO WAY!?! THATS YOU GUYS!?!”

Casey said he needs to redo it now, but doesn’t know what a world would be like without it.

The Little Red Door, 1845 Cortlandt St. Cathy Gough said she bought the Little Free Library for her husband Rob’s birthday last year and painted it to match their house. Their library has both adult and children’s books, but like most, her library leans towards children’s. She said books seem to appear and vanish on their own. Cathy is considering adding treats for dogs.

Little Blooms Little Free Library, 811 Arlington St. I missed chatting with “Miss Deidre” about her Library but I visited. It’s a well-kept yellow, orange and green

Library with a focus on Children’s books. Find this one on Facebook too at facebook.com/littlebloomslibrary.

Little Banned Library 1021 Heights Blvd

That may not be the official address, you will find this library near the driveway. While on my own “Window Perspectives” tour, artist John Runnels, (featured in the Summer issue) directed me to this new Little Banned Library. Custom built, this library is modeled to look like a jail. This one is so new it’s not on the website or app yet but it is a chartered Little Free Library. A company called Cetafab built this gem. Like most jails, this library (and a few others I noticed) is monitored 24/7! www.instagram.com/littlebannedlibrary/

The Heights wouldn’t be the Heights if people didn’t do their own thing, enter the banned library collections. The LFL calls unregistered libraries book exchanges. The owners of these “book exchanges” are just as attentive and enthusiastic about their libraries as the chartered ones. I couldn’t get a count on these though, I’d bet there are many more.

Banned Sidewalk Library, 1020 E 7th St. Melanie Malinowski started her Banned Sidewalk Library inside of a newspaper box about a year ago. A sign above the box lets neighbors know that only banned books are allowed.

“Once in a great while someone puts a banned book in,” Melanie wrote me, “Sometimes, people put non-banned books into the library, I walk those books elsewhere.” Melanie restocks her library every 3 to 4 months.

Kritter’s Little Library 828 W. 24th St. Kim Ritter admired a friend’s library and decided to start her own. She told me her inspirations were a new grandchild in her life and her daughter’s own published book, “The Great Texas Dragon Race.” Kim’s box is also a former newspaper box, with books for adults on the top shelf and children’s books on the lower shelf.

First & Second Saturday Art Markets

First Saturday Arts Market has featured dozens of visual artists each month showcasing their work in the Historic Houston Heights since March 2004. The market was at the forefront of outdoor “popups” trending nationwide at the time with one key difference, a focus on visual arts.

The market takes place at 540 W. 19th St., 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., September - May. Visitors to this free outdoor event will find friendly artists with paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry and many more popular art mediums.

There is always a popular food truck on site and local singer/songwriters can often be found providing entertainment at the market. Going on 20 years, the market has provided artists a chance to present their creations to the public in a casual relaxed atmosphere for both patrons and artists.

The Market at Sawyer Yards takes place on 2nd Saturdays at 1502 Sawyer St. in conjunction with Sawyer Yards Open Studios in the First Ward area of Arts District Houston. This market is open September - May, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. The market follows the same footprint as First Saturday Arts Market with more of a focus on artisan crafts, folk art, home decor, beauty and wellness products, cottage and packaged specialty foods.

Surrounded by the highest concentration of working artists in all of Texas, the market coincides with 2nd Saturday Open Studios, when artists from The Silos at Sawyer Yards, Winter, Spring, Summer and Silver Street Studios, open their studios to the public. For details about both markets visit FirstSaturdayArtsMarket.com

Are You Aging Well? Three Tips to Get You on the Right Track

“You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

That wisdom from a simple children’s book, originally published in 1922, has endured perhaps because of the way it speaks to the adults who have sat by bedsides and read the story to children through the decades. The adults who recognize the loose joints and the thinning hair as a nod to their own experiences with aging and becoming “Real”.

The story eloquently explains that when we stand the test of time and don’t break easily, we get older. That is inevitable. But there is a distinction between getting older in chronological years and aging. The major difference is that the latter can be controlled to a certain extent by our behaviors. We intellectually know that the best way to combat aging is to stay healthy. So, doesn’t it make sense to adopt behaviors that keep your body strong, your mind alert and your immune

system functioning at a high level? I can answer that for myself – and the answer is a resounding yes!

Now, I don’t live a life of deprivation, but neither do I live a life full of excess. Balance is everything, but in this age of technology, it’s difficult to find. So here are three of my top tips that I share with all of our clients when they are first starting out. Believe me – there’s nothing earth shattering here.

Top Three Tips to Combat Aging Decide You’re Not Old

Our brains can reshape our attitudes toward whatever obstacles life may toss our way. Because life events shape our thoughts and behaviors, never be afraid to seek guidance when it comes to your physical and/or emotional health. You are too important to live life less than. Worry, anger, heartbreak, chronic pain, depression -- all of these contribute mightily to the aging process.

Fuel Your Body with Nutrient Dense Food

There is a huge difference between fueling your body for optimal performance and dieting to restrict calories to lose weight. Chronic dieting can actually damage your metabolism and leave you struggling for decades to regain balance. Fueling with nutrient dense foods means eating

See you at the markets!

Cheers!

stuff that you can recognize. No human body can sustain optimal health eating “faux food” that comes out of boxes, bags and cans. You can lose weight following diets that feature packaged foods, but at what expense? Pre-packaged foods can be toxic.

Move Your Body Every Day

Movement = Life. We inhabit miraculous mechanical machines. Like any machine, our bodies must be maintained to perform well. As we age, injuries and illness can cause pain which makes movement less appealing. But – the best antidote is to keep moving by finding new ways to stay active. There is a way.

Some may think that these tips are too simplistic. But the fact is, these three things work. My staff and I prove it daily. We will all get older by the numbers. But we can stay young at heart and continue to thrive as we age.

Why Choose a “Board Certified” Attorney?

trial law. Board certified lawyers earn the right to publicly represent themselves as a specialist in their select area of law. They are the only attorneys allowed to do so by the State Bar of Texas. This designation sets them apart as being an attorney with the highest public commitment to excellence in their area of law.

• Regularly attending continuing education seminars in order to remain up to date on the current trends in law

• Evaluation by peers, including fellow lawyers and judges

• Passing a comprehensive 6-hour written examination

Lawyers often cite various accomplishments, awards and even “expertise” on their websites and advertisements. However, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization was established by the Supreme Court of Texas as the only governing board authorized to certify attorneys in legal specialty areas.

Board certification is a mark of excellence and a distinguishing accomplishment. There are more than 100,000 lawyers licensed to practice law in Texas. Only 7,400 of these have earned the right to be publicly recognized as Board Certified specialists in one of 24 select areas of law, including personal injury

I have been Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 2008. I am one of only 1,704 Texas attorneys that hold this specialized certification.

In order to achieve and retain this status, I have had to meet an extensive list of qualifications, including:

• Being licensed to practice law for at least five years (I have been licensed since 1998)

• Devoting a specific percentage of my practice to personal injury law

• Handling a wide variety of matters in personal injury law to demonstrate my experience and involvement in the field

• Applying for recertification every five years

• Trying a requisite number of cases to a jury verdict, including personal injury cases

If you would like to speak to a board-certified personal injury trial lawyer, please call me today.

Setting the Right Expectations for House Hunting

Buying your next home is an exciting prospect. Sometimes we can get swept away with the features we want in our new homes. So, let’s bring things back to reality and think about what you need your new home to have. Check out the tips below to help keep you on track when you start house hunting.

Create a Budget

One important thing to do before you start is to find out how much you can spend on your house. Reaching out to a local lender, like Texas Loan Star, is a great way to get started to see what you qualify for. A loan officer will also be able to break down your monthly payment and estimate taxes and homeowners insurance for you to help build out your budget.

Using some kind of budgeting program will help give you a clean picture of how your mortgage payment fits into your monthly expenses. You’ll want to make sure you have money left over at the end of the month for savings, improvements and other miscellaneous items.

Prioritize What You Need, What You Want and What You Can Live Without

Sit down and think about what your new house absolutely must have. We’re not talking about a bathroom or kitchen either. Think about

whether you need to be closer to work to have a better work-life balance. Is the house close enough to a good school? Think about the essentials—things you cannot live without.

Next, think about what you want your new home to have that your current home doesn’t have. Think of these as upgrades you hope to have in your future home.

The pie-in-the-sky stuff like your own personal basement bowling alley, would be nice; however, you can probably continue to live perfectly fine without. Is it worth it to spend thousands of dollars more on those luxury items when you could use that money elsewhere?

Take Your List and Start House Hunting

Teaming up with a knowledgeable real estate agent in your target area is crucial for your house hunting experience. Send your agent your list and budget and let them work their magic to help you towards finding your dream home! If you can’t find a home you can afford with everything you want, it’s time to reevaluate.

Re-evaluate Your List

Look back at your list and see where you can cut. Remember, you can always change things like flooring, carpet, paint, cabinets, and

appliances.

An updated, ready-to-use kitchen, for example, would be great, but maybe you can use the money you save on a lower priced house to update the kitchen later. You might even save some money by doing the work yourself.

Finding the right home might take a little time, but preparing ahead of time, knowing what you want in a house and having the right lender and agent makes the process easier and less stressful. Happy house hunting!
