Brookdale The Heights has officially launched their HealthPlus program. The care coordination program, Brookdale HealthPlus, works to help improve residents’ quality of life, and help prevent avoidable emergency room visits or hospitalizations - in partnership with their family and healthcare providers. They have a dedicated RN Care Manager
who proactively helps residents manage their health every day and serves as a partner for other healthcare professionals. Chronic conditions are better managed with a care manager’s attention to evidence-based nursing protocols, and help close gaps in care. They’re an advocate for residents to help manage care transitions, including coordinating communication between providers, reconciling medications and scheduling follow-up visits with physicians.
For Brookdale HealthPlus residents compared to similar individuals living in private homes they saw 78% fewer urgent care visits, 36% fewer hospitalizations, and 63% higher annual wellness visit completion rate. Come for a visit and learn how to live healthier at Brookdale The Heights.

Early socialization for puppies should be considered a “behavior vaccine” since positively exposing them to a wide variety of people, animals, and environments is vital for developing a well-adjusted and confident adult dog. Puppyhood affords the best opportunity to influence a dog’s behavior. Deficiencies in early development can have adverse effects on a dog’s behavior and disposition later in life. Therefore,
once your puppy receives one or two sets of vaccinations, exposure to the outside world should not be ruled out but should be carefully considered and controlled.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior encourages owners to take their pets to puppy classes as early as possible. In the AVSAB’s Socialization statement, they conclude that “behavioral problems are the number one cause of relinquishment to shelters.
Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age.” When the risk factor of a puppy contracting a disease due to responsible early socialization is compared to the risk factor of a dog being euthanized due to behavior problems, the benefits far outweigh the risks.
A great place to start socializing puppies is in a well-run and organized puppy class. Homes of relatives and friends whose dogs are demonstrably healthy, vaccinated, and friendly, may
also be a good place to start. The best puppy classes combine training interludes with short off leash play sessions. A class that includes some controlled off-leash play, allows the puppies to teach each other bite inhibition and gain vital socialization skills while owners practice and learn to control their puppy.
Ensure your puppy class is taught by a certified professional that does not use any methods that force, startle, scare, or hurt puppies. Puppy Schools should have established intake protocols that includes verifying vaccines are up to date and checking for visible symptoms of coughing, sneezing, or discharge from the eyes or nose, or unusual lethargy. All facilities that cater to puppies and dogs of any age should have established rigorous cleaning and sanitizing protocols. Avoid places that are commonly used by unknown dogs, especially big box stores and dog parks.
Discover our innovative home backup power solutions, designed as an alternative to “conventional standby generators”. Our offerings provide reliable backup power without the need for costly “conventional standby generators” or solar systems, and are ideal choices when outdoor space limitations prevent the installation of a “conventional standby generator”.
Our backup solutions include the Texas Hybrid System and the Interlock Transfer System.
With the Texas Hybrid System, each time
there is a power outage, the system’s battery automatically supplies power to your essential home needs. In Houston, most power outages are caused by minor issues and are typically resolved quickly, lasting only minutes to a few hours. Unlike conventional standby generators, which may activate unnecessarily, our system operates efficiently during these brief interruptions.
While major storms, such as hurricanes, are infrequent, they can lead to prolonged outages lasting several hours or even days. During such events, the Texas Hybrid System’s tri-fuel portable generator, equipped with interlock transfer installation and a quick connect natural gas installation, allows you to charge the battery, power essential circuits, and supply electricity to most of your electrical systems, including central air conditioning, gas furnaces, and pool equipment. This tri-fuel portable generator offers an enhanced energy solution for your home when prolonged power outages exist.
With an Interlock Transfer System, we offer the installation of a portable tri-fuel generator, designed to provide reliable electricity for most of your electrical systems, including air conditioning, gas furnaces, and pool equipment.
We offer a dependable solution that simplifies the setup of your tri-fuel portable generator, utilizing gasoline, propane, or natural gas quick connect options during power outages.
Our service includes direct connection to your main breaker panel, eliminating the need for extension cords and reducing the stress associated with connecting important electrical circuits.
Donovan Park, nestled at 700 Heights Boulevard in Houston’s historic Heights neighborhood, stands as a cherished community landmark owned and operated by the Houston Heights Association (HHA). In 1996 through a remarkable five-day volunteer effort, the HHA transformed the park from an underutilized space into a vibrant playground. Designed by Robert S. Leathers & Associates, the park features a distinctive wooden play structure adorned with Victorianera turrets and a railroad theme, reflecting the area’s rich history and fostering imaginative play among children.
Over the years, Donovan Park has remained a popular gathering spot for families, offering
swings, bridges, slides, and a quarter-size wooden train that delights young visitors. The entire area is enclosed by a wrought-iron fence with latched gates, ensuring a safe environment for children to explore freely.
Recognizing the need to modernize and enhance the park’s facilities, the HHA has initiated the Reimagine Donovan Park capital campaign and has plans to raise an estimated $2 million.
This ambitious project aims to renovate the park with an inclusive, play-focused design
that will encourage active play for children of all ages. The goal is to ensure the park meets the evolving needs of the community while preserving its unique character. The HHA is actively seeking donations and dedicated volunteers to support the Reimagine Donovan Park committee by contributing their skills and passion to shape the park’s future.
As the HHA has now celebrated its 50-year anniversary, the revitalization of Donovan Park stands as a testament to the community’s enduring spirit and commitment to creating engaging spaces for all. Through collective effort and vision, Donovan Park is poised to continue inspiring generations to come and the community’s support is an essential part of this process.
The HHA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and financial contributions can be made by using the QR code. All donations to the Reimagine Donovan Park capital campaign will directly fund improvements and help bring the vision of a revitalized, inclusive park to life!

Many pet owners turn to doggie daycare as a reliable option for their dogs while they are at work, away, or running errands, seeking a safe and enjoyable environment. Traditional doggie daycare often features open play areas where dogs can socialize under supervision; however, this model may lack structured activities and enrichment, resulting in a less stimulating experience for some dogs. While it provides benefits such as social interaction and energy release, it may not meet the needs of dogs that require more.
In contrast, our Doggie Daycare Enrichment model prioritizes a structured environment that integrates mental stimulation through puzzles, games, new experiences and interactive toys, alongside socialization and physical activity. This approach not only reduces boredom and anxiety but also promotes skill development, ensuring a more enriching experience for your dog. Our Enhanced Daycare programs focus on activities that teach new behaviors, contributing to a more balanced demeanor. These programs offer a variety of engaging activities that stimulate dogs’ senses and challenge their problem-solving skills, which is especially beneficial for those needing confidence or possessing a strong drive. Furthermore, many dogs flourish in an enrichment-focused model, where the structured environment and mental engagement help mitigate stress and anxiety.
Selecting the appropriate daycare for your dog should be based on their unique personality. A traditional all-day play daycare may be suitable for some highly social dogs that thrive on interaction, while an enrichment daycare program is better suited for dogs that are looking for a more rounded environment.
It is important to understand that dog daycare is not universally applicable; each dog has distinct needs that should inform your choice. The decision between traditional play and enrichment daycare depends on your dog’s individual temperament and what will benefit them most. Additionally, facilities vary widely in their services, capacity, and the expertise of their staff. If you are uncertain about the suitability of daycare for your pet, our experienced team at Yale Street Dog House is available to discuss your dog’s characteristics and preferences, helping you make a well-informed decision.

but Houston became home when I moved here in high school. I later graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Business Communications but it was during my travels abroad I realized how much I value community—something I’ve carried into my real estate career.
Today, I help clients across Houston, Galveston, and the surrounding areas navigate the market with confidence. My approach is rooted in my Texas upbringing, international perspective, and a deep commitment to service. I’ve been fortunate to serve on the board of the Houston Association of Realtors® and support organizations like SEARCH
Homeless Services and DePelchin Children’s Center. These experiences keep me grounded and remind me that real estate is ultimately about people, not just properties.
As a Heights resident, I spend a lot of time on the MKT Trail. I still remember the first time I took a visiting friend from New York on a morning run there. About a mile in, he stopped, looked around at the tree-lined path and the skyline peeking through, and said, “Wait—this is Houston?” That moment stuck with me. It’s one of the many reasons I love this neighborhood—it’s urban, yet livable, and full of surprises.
But the trail isn’t perfect. There’s a 1.3-mile gap near I-10 that breaks the flow, and I’ve seen firsthand how frustrating it can be for families and commuters alike. That’s why I support the effort to build two new pedestrian bridges to close the gap. We’ve seen how transformative similar projects have been at Buffalo Bayou Park, and with nearly 40,000 residents nearby, the impact here could be even greater.
If you see me out on the trail—running, biking, or walking my dog—feel free to say hello. And if you’d like to support the bridge project, visit www.atotb.org or
follow @ataleoftwobridges on Instagram. Let’s keep building a better, more connected Houston— together.

As we age, maintaining our physical health becomes increasingly important. After the age of 50, many people begin to notice changes in their muscle mass, bone density, and overall energy levels. Strength training, often overlooked in favor of cardio or flexibility exercises, plays a critical role in healthy aging. Incorporating regular resistance training into your weekly routine can lead to profound benefits, both physically and mentally.
One of the most significant changes that occurs with age is the natural loss of muscle mass, a condition known as sarcopenia. Starting as early as age 30, adults can lose 3% to 5% of muscle mass per decade if they are inactive. This loss accelerates after 50, leading to decreased strength, slower metabolism, and increased risk of falls and fractures. Strength training helps counteract this decline by stimulating muscle growth and improving muscular strength. Even moderate resistance exercises can make a noticeable difference.
Bone health is another critical area where strength training has a positive impact. Osteoporosis, or the thinning of bones,
becomes a concern as we age, especially for postmenopausal women. Resistance exercises such as weightlifting or bodyweight squats place stress on bones, encouraging the body to increase bone density. This not only helps prevent osteoporosis but also reduces the likelihood of bone breaks from falls or minor accidents.
In addition to muscle and bone benefits, strength training significantly improves joint function and balance. Stronger muscles around joints can relieve pressure and improve stability, which is essential for everyday tasks like climbing stairs or carrying groceries. Improved balance also reduces the risk of falling—an important factor in preserving independence as we age.
Mental and emotional well-being are also positively influenced by strength training. Regular exercise is known to release endorphins, natural mood elevators that can help combat anxiety and depression. Furthermore, the sense of accomplishment and increased confidence from becoming physically stronger can greatly enhance one’s quality of life.
It’s never too late to start strength training. Beginners over 50 can benefit from starting with light weights or resistance bands, focusing on major muscle groups with exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and rows. It’s recommended to work with a trainer or physical therapist initially to ensure proper form and to create a safe, tailored program based on individual needs and limitations.

When most people think about a mortgage, they see it as a necessary step to owning a home—but not many see it for what it truly is: a financial tool that can build (or hinder) your long-term wealth.
Your mortgage isn’t just a monthly bill. It’s a structured pathway to building equity, leveraging appreciation, and—if done right—boosting your future net worth. Let’s break it down.
Every time you make a mortgage payment; a portion of that payment goes toward the principal balance— meaning you’re slowly increasing how much of the home you actually own. That’s equity. In a market like the Heights, where property values have historically appreciated over time, this equity can grow even faster. That growth becomes part of your net worth, whether you tap into it later through a refinance, home equity loan, or cash out when you sell.
But here’s where the loan structure really matters. Choosing the wrong loan—one with a high rate, excessive fees, or hidden mortgage insurance—can cost you tens of thousands over the life of the loan. That’s money you could’ve used to invest, save, or build toward your next real estate opportunity.
That’s why working with an experienced lender matters. I’ve spent over 20 years helping buyers in the Heights not just qualify for a loan—but secure one that positions them for financial success. I don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all” mortgages. I believe in smart strategies tailored to your long-term goals.
So yes—your mortgage absolutely affects your future net worth. The right loan can open doors to more than just a new house. It can create leverage, opportunity, and financial freedom.
If you’re thinking about buying, refinancing, or just want to understand your options better, let’s talk. Your future net worth may just thank you.

Wholistic BRAIN Therapy of Houston, in association with Dr. David Dubin and Dr. Jayne Payne, is bringing the future of energy and frequency medicine to Houston! Presenting Direct Neurofeedback and PEMF/Terahertz technologies. These technologies, coupled with Dr. Gabor Mate’s “Compassionate Inquiry” counseling protocols are now available at Wholistic BRAIN Therapy of Houston, where we help you to heal Trauma and Addictions naturally. “30 Minutes That Could Heal The Next 30 Years Of Your Life”
Energy is the living, vibrating foundation of your being, and it is your body’s natural self-healing elixir, it’s natural medicine. Energy therapy is the science and art of optimizing your individual energies to help your body and mind function at its best.
Benefits Include:
Addictions and Behavioral Disorders Support Pain/Migraine/Sleep Management
Reducing Depression/Anxiety Symptoms
Supporting Cell Function and Regeneration
Calming the Vagus Nerve, Essential in Trauma Healing
Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion Healing
Psychological Therapies and Mental Well-Being:
Incorporating Dr. Gabor Mate’s Compassionate Inquiry and the Motivational Interviewing Counseling technique, the Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnaire that measures childhood trauma, The Harvard University S.M.A.R.T.
Action Model, and a Weekly Healing Journal. The technology of Direct Neurofeedback is compelling and important because it is a BRAIN BASED technology that works by using an EEG (a test that measures electrical activity in the brain) that causes a slight fluctuation in brain wave patterns. It is like “rebooting” a personal computer, like “resetting” itself.
The way it works is you have non-invasive sensors placed on the forehead and neck that measure the electrical activity of the brain. A customized, imperceptible signal is then sent to the brain, helping the brain to gather “frozen” stuck neuronal pathways which allows the brain to reorganize itself. This reorganization happens very quickly, almost always within the first three sessions.
Direct Neurofeedback helps across a wide range of disorders such as symptoms of Anxiety, Depression, Substance Abuse, all Addictive Behaviors, and Traumatic Brain Injuries. Direct Neurofeedback has been helpful with Addictions because so much of Addictive Behavior is actually self-medication for Anxiety, Trauma and Depression.
In my own personal experience, Direct Neurofeedback has healed my Traumatic Brain Injury/Severe Post-Concussion Syndrome after seven years of traditional medicine and neurological techniques failing to do so. In fact, there are formal studies treating ten
former NFL players for symptoms of Post-Concussion and the data shows that 9 out of the 10 had marked improvements with their symptoms. There has also been a study at UC San Diego showing improvements with Veterans suffering from TBI.
PEMF/Terahertz technologies are now combined to create an incredibly effective synergy of both low-frequency (earth-based) AND high-frequency (etheric) healing. PEMF mimics the earth’s geomagnetic field but is highly concentrated. Just 10 minutes on this device is the equivalent of many hours of barefoot grounding standing outside. Terahertz is a very high frequency range between infrared and microwave. It safely penetrates deep into body tissues and bone for “futuristic” type healing. Since it accesses bone marrow, it stimulates Stem Cell production and DNA repair.

n a world fueled by consumption, this issue of the Heights Pages celebrates the Buy Nothing Project’s spirit of freely sharing goods and services without expectation of payment. The @HouFoundMe art collective embodies this spirit, weaving generosity, creativity, and community into their art, making them a perfect fit for our exploration of free-spirited giving.
This open collective, driven by a core group of five organizers, creates original works, hides them across the city, and invites anyone to hunt for them through cryptic clues shared on Instagram. What began as a small gathering and experiment has blossomed into a vibrant
community ritual, blending art, scavenger hunts, and social connection.
The core team consists of five equal collaborators, each bringing unique skills to the table, though two members—Nita (@beehivesandbouffants) and Gene (@im_a_gene_yes)— act as the creative linchpins. Without their presence, events don’t happen, yet the group really has no designated leader. The other core members are: Lali (@laligotacamera), a film photographer who sources materials, promotes the group, and organizes art drops to draw in new faces; Neato (@neatorodriguez), a tile artist who brings professionalism, contributes art for giveaways, and helps source materials; and She (@ sheregulatephotography), the group’s digital maestro, handling photography, videography, event recaps, flyers, and most of the social media posting.
Nita, the group’s emcee,
sources workshop materials and provides art for giveaways, while Gene is the jack-of-alltrades, building photo shoot backdrops and prepping for workshops, like carving stamps for their upcoming block printing session.
The collective’s signature activity is their “art hide and seek” game. Artists create pieces, hide them in public spaces around Houston, and post a photo clue on the group’s Instagram (@Houfoundme). The community races to
find the art, and the lucky discoverer claims it for free, often sharing their find on social media. It’s a donation-based system, with no expectation of payment, though contributions help sustain the group’s efforts. The process is collaborative: clues are shared via the main
Instagram account until the art is claimed, fostering a sense of collective excitement.
HouFoundMe hosts regular events to bring creatives together. First Thursdays at The Tipsy Sloth, 3517 Navigation Blvd, (7:30–9:30 PM) feature rotating free workshops and art raffles, open to all skill levels, where attendees can experiment and connect. Skessions Second Thursdays at Houston Cider Co. (1125 W Cavalcade St., Houston, Texas 77009), hosted by Kyle (@kcool2015), are laid-back “sketch sessions” where artists draw directly on papered walls, encouraging spontaneous creativity.
HouFoundMe’s creativity extends beyond these gatherings. Beyond workshops, HouFoundMe members are active in Houston’s market scene, where bartering among artists is the norm. Much of this happens at the Macabre Market at Equal Parts Brewing, trading supplies, art, and ideas, embodying the barter spirit.
A great example of their meetups is a block printing workshop planned for July, where participants will use stamps carved by Gene and print on repurposed denim and fabric samples sourced by Nita.
HouFoundMe isn’t just about free art—it’s about building a community where creativity is accessible, collaborative, and unpretentious. Their art drops turn strangers into participants, their workshops empower novices, and their bartering fosters a sense of mutual support. By placing art in public spaces and inviting discovery, they make art a shared experience rather than a transaction.
As they continue to grow, HouFoundMe aims to keep their events free or donation-based, ensuring accessibility. Their Instagram serves as both a gallery and a call to action, inviting Houstonians to join the hunt, attend a workshop, or maybe even trade at a market. In a city as sprawling as Houston, HouFoundMe is stitching a vibrant tapestry of art and connection, where everyone’s invited to add a thread.
Follow on Instagram for updates and get there and get artsy!

Our customer service is different. Any good business advertises their excellent customer service. The way we are different is, should a challenge arise, should a mistake occur, should your project be escalated or delayed, Elizabeth Cole will exhibit genuine care and resolution during the process.
Our offerings are different. We have created a one-stop shopping venue for all things home décor. Our resources include – Elizabeth Cole Showroom, EC Interior Design, EC Home Décor & Furniture Outlet, and EC Drapery & Bedding.
Our in-house design team is staffed with talented and experienced designers in residential and commercial design. Our complimentary in-store design services provide a valuable resource to assist people with their design needs and help accomplish their vision for their home. Our designers know the product and will not just be there to take your sales order. You will not endure endless sales’ pitches about product of which you may not even be interested. Instead, you will receive a knowledgeable person who will help you traverse the journey of shopping for items to complete your home.

In today’s market, simply listing a home isn’t enough. As a Houston Heights specialist, I use Compass’ powerful 3-phase marketing strategy to give sellers a competitive edge and help their homes stand out—and sell.
Phase 1: Pre-Market Buzz - To build anticipation! Like a movie. Before your listing even hits the market, I create excitement through Compass' Coming Soon and Private Exclusive platforms. This early exposure builds demand and often attracts serious buyers before the home is officially available.
Phase 2: Launch with Impact
Your home is professionally staged and captured with magazine-quality photos, 3D tours, and floor plans. Then it’s launched across every major platform—Zillow, Realtor. com, YouTube, email campaigns, and targeted social media ads—designed to attract the right buyers fast.
Phase 3: Sustained Exposure & Strategy
Even after launch, I continue marketing through open houses, broker tours, buyer feedback surveys, and weekly updates. Using the Compass Seller Dashboard, you stay in the
loop with real-time insights.
From pricing strategy to closing, I provide personalized, high-level service that gets results. Want your home to shine—and sell—in the Heights? Let’s talk.

As a proud Houston Heights resident and Realtor, I like to keep a close eye on emerging trends in our local market. Right now, many features that buyers are looking for are beautifully showcased in one of my latest listings in Shady Acres. 1240 W 16th St highlights several design trends that aren’t just popular — they’re here to stay.
This home sits beside a tranquil pond, complete with a charming fountain and lush landscaping, and a decorative iron fence frames the serene scene. Buyers today crave
peaceful outdoor spaces where they can relax and recharge, and homes that offer scenic views and a sense of escape are topping their wish lists. In this home, multiple porches and balconies allow you to dine al fresco, entertain guests, or simply enjoy a quiet morning coffee surrounded by the beauty of nature.
Bright, sun-filled interiors are more important than ever. Large windows and open layouts that allow natural light to flood the space not only make homes feel more inviting but also improve overall mood. This home embraces natural light at every turn, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Open-concept layouts continue to reign supreme. High ceilings, modern finishes, and easy transitions between living, dining, and outdoor areas create an effortless flow ideal for entertaining. Here, the living room boasts a cozy gas log fireplace and a dramatic sliding wall of windows that opens onto the back porch overlooking the pond — blending indoor comfort with outdoor beauty.
Today’s buyers want kitchens that are functional and stylish. This home’s kitchen features soaring ceilings, sleek gray cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, a large island with seating and elegant pendant lighting. It’s the perfect place to cook, entertain, and make memories.
Whether it’s a home office, gym, or game room, homeowners today want spaces that adapt to their needs. In this home, a stylish game room currently doubles as a home gym, complete with hardwood floors, sliding glass doors to a covered balcony, and plumbing in place for a wet bar for your personal happy hour.
Homes that offer natural light, modern open spaces, scenic views, versatile rooms, and outdoor areas are capturing buyers’ hearts. If you’re thinking about making a move this season, or simply want to explore what’s out there, I’d love to help you find a home that checks all your boxes.
Do your hips or knees hurt when you walk, climb stairs, or get out of a chair? You’re not alone. Many people over 40 feel this pain every day. But there’s good news — you don’t have to live with it anymore.
I’m Dr. Catherine Cahill MD, an orthopedic surgeon right here in Houston at Fondren Orthopedic Group. I am an expert in helping people heal with total hip and total knee replacements in addition to non-operative options. Replacements fix worn-out joints so you can move without pain.
I use minimally invasive surgery, which means smaller cuts and less damage to your muscles. That means less pain, smaller scars, and a faster recovery.
Even better, I use robotic technology during surgery. This smart tool helps me be very exact when placing your new joint. With this kind of precision, your joint works better and lasts longer. My patients are up and walking the same day and go home quickly usually the same day!
Here’s what that means for you:
◆ Less pain after surgery
◆ Shorter time in the hospital
◆ A quicker return to walking and doing what you love
◆ A new joint that feels more natural
If your hip or knee pain is slowing you down, let’s talk. Many people just like you are now enjoying walks, gardening, travel, and playing with their grandkids again — all without joint pain. We will work with you to discuss your individual goals and needs and design a treatment plan tailored to you.
You’ve taken care of others for years now it’s time to take care of yourself.
Call Catherine Cahill MD’s office at (832) 516-6997 to schedule a visit. Let’s help you move better and feel better — faster. You can find us online at catherinecahillmd.com
There are many different ways to create an estate plan. There is no one-size-fits-all for everyone. As with most things in life, there are a few common approaches; however, I believe you should keep it simple.
Payable on Death (POD) or Transfer on Death (TOD) Designations for Financial Accounts are primarily used for financial accounts like bank or investment accounts. Check with financial institutions for specific requirements and forms.
Pros: Avoids probate
Cons: Many people list and forget and do change as their lives change.
In a life estate deed, a person keeps their property for their lifetime; upon death, the property passes to whom you choose to receive it.
Pros: Inexpensive, can avoid probate, assist in Medicaid planning, and avoid capital gain taxes.
Cons: Can cause title issues.
A Will distributes your property at your death. Have a professionally drafted Will and review it after all significant life changes, such as marriage, divorce, deaths, or births.
Pros: The preparation of a Will is less expensive than a trust.
Cons: The Will must be probated.
A living trust allows you to place your property into a trust during your lifetime, listing beneficiaries who receive the property after your death. You control the assets of trust during your lifetime. At your death, a successor trustee will distribute the trust’s assets.
Pros: Since the trust owns the property, no probate is required.
Cons: Cost of setting up and transferring your assets to the trust. People do not understand trust and fail to maintain the trust. Trust documents are misplaced, thrown away, or lost. Lost trust documents create expensive problems to resolve.
Consult an estate-planning attorney to help determine which method or combination fits your needs.
In my experience, a Simple Plan is better than No Plan. The Simplest Plan to fit your needs is your Best Plan.

It’s believed that next to teeth, the eyebrows are the most important features on any face. Eyebrow trends come and go, from thin and sharp to bold and bushy à la Cara Delevingne and basically every other model who’s been hot in the past few years.
But the latest trend we can’t get enough of is microblading, a new tattoo technique that fills brows out or reshapes them by drawing on tiny lines that look like individual hairs. We know what you’re thinking: tattooed eyebrows? No way. But hear us out. Microblading leaves brows looking natural and takes years off of your face! It sounds terrifying, and there’s this stigma of grandma’s blue arch eyebrows, but these are completely different.
Microblading is done with a hand-held tool made out of needles that puts pigment into the skin, but doesn’t go as deep as a normal tattoo would.
It’s also semi-permanent. Your micro bladed brows should last between two and three years.
Imagine going to Bikram yoga, swimming or simply just waking up in the morning with fabulous brows! Now it’s possible with microblading at La Paz
To start with, we want you to know that we’ve got your back! Both Dr. Darsey and Dr. Lindhorst are always on call if you find yourself stranded in the evenings or during the weekends with a dental question. We do not utilize an answering service but answer our patients’ concerns ourselves every time! We also know that you might not be sure if an injury or braces “malfunction” is an emergency or not. Do not hesitate to call us. Our team does not charge for phone calls and our doctors understand that you might not be able to settle down until you know for sure that your little one is alright!
That said… let’s talk about what true dental emergencies really are. Pain is always a concern. If your child has pain, take a photo of the area in question and call us. If you see swelling, inflammation or bleeding… call us! If your little
one has had teeth trauma from running, playing baseball, jumping on a trampoline, riding a bike, or just slipping on tiles in your kitchen and has bleeding, broken teeth, or other gum and soft tissue
concerns… call us. Many of these emergencies can be discussed on the phone and resolved without seeing us in the office. However, some need to be addressed either with us calling in antibiotics or with seeing our patients in the office after hours. If trauma involves permanent teeth, we want to know as soon as possible. Small fractures can be fixed on the next working day, but larger ones sometimes need to be seen as soon as possible in order to prevent root canals or losing the tooth. If a permanent tooth is completely “knocked out” (avulsed), patient needs to be seen within an hour to preserve the tooth.
Some dental concerns consist of ulcers, sores, and trauma that can wait until the next business day. But if you are unsure, please snap some photos and make the phone call!
On the orthodontic side, anything that causes pain such as wires poking cheeks or appliances where bands come off a tooth on one side but are attached to the other, should facilitate a phone call. However, broken brackets can easily be fixed on the next working day, and orthodontic wax can go a long way for any uncomfortable rubbing and ulcers. Some tightness and discomfort are expected after braces are put on or wires changed, but pain should be addressed if needed. Sending us a picture of the issue is also very helpful in these situations. Occasionally we can walk you through a solution over the phone but if not, we will figure out the best way to remedy the situation and see you as soon as possible.
The bottom line is that although few things require needing to be seen right away in the office, we understand that your child’s comfort is important and we are here to help. Our team is available to answer questions and take care of our patients at any time. We truly hope for your sake that you will never need to utilize this service, but we are here if you need us.
A – Asymmetry
Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, and early detection is critical for successful treatment. Dermatologists use a simple yet effective system to evaluate suspicious moles or skin lesions—the ABCDE rule. This guideline helps identify warning signs that may indicate melanoma or other concerning skin conditions.
A healthy mole is typically symmetrical, meaning if you were to draw a line through the middle, both halves would look the same. Asymmetry suggests that the cells are growing in an irregular and uncontrolled manner.
B – Border
The border of a benign mole is usually smooth and well-defined. In contrast, melanomas often have irregular, ragged, or blurred edges. If a mole’s borders appear uneven, spreading, or notched, it’s time to have it checked by a dermatologist.
C – Color
Normal moles tend to be uniform in color, usually brown or tan. A mole that has multiple shades can be a warning sign of melanoma. Variations in color may indicate abnormal cell growth and should be evaluated.
D – Diameter
Most benign moles are small (about the size of a pencil eraser). Moles or lesions larger than this size, especially if they are growing, warrant medical attention. However, melanomas can be smaller, so all suspicious changes should be examined.
E – Evolving
One of the most critical factors in identifying potential skin cancer is change over time. If a mole or spot on the skin evolves in size, shape, color, texture, or symptoms, it could indicate a problem. Regular selfexams and professional skin checks are crucial for catching abnormalities early.
The
The ABCDE rule is a helpful tool, but it does not replace a professional dermatologic evaluation. Dermatologists use advanced techniques, such as dermoscopy and biopsy, to confirm whether a lesion is benign or cancerous.
The ABCDE rule is an easy yet powerful way to identify suspicious moles and detect melanoma early. By seeking timely dermatologic care, you can protect yourself from the dangers of skin cancer. If you notice any changes in your skin, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment— early detection can save lives.

We’re wrapping up some great projects this year – The Shepherd restoration project is underway with fresh mosaics all throughout Shepherd between Westheimer and 59, you know, where the terrible construction has been underway for the last couple years… We’re part of that too, but don’t blame the tile guys.
We wrapped up some Pillar work with the Norhill Association, having prepped and coated the existing pillars, and recolored the street names and blocks. If you’ve been through Norhill lately, I’m sure you’ve seen them.
Between the 1920’s and the 1950’s, Houston used blue and white, unglazed mosaic tiles inlaid in curbs to indicate addresses and street names.
As Houston grows and continues to rebuild, these pieces of history are quickly disappearing. Curb Appeal Blues is working with the Blue Tile Project to bring back the Blue Tile as a symbol of Houston’s support of Historic Preservation, local business, and the arts. These are a great permanent replacement for the painted address numbers on your curb!

This year’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ was a milestone event—and Nan & Company Properties was honored to make history as the first-ever real estate company to serve as an Official Show Sponsor. As Houston celebrated its most iconic traditions, we proudly took part in the excitement, making meaningful connections and unforgettable memories throughout the 2025 season.
With more than 2.7 million attendees and $28 million raised for Texas youth and education, this year’s Rodeo was one for the books.
A highlight of our sponsorship was Rodeo Uncorked! Best Bites, one of the season’s most anticipated culinary celebrations. As the presenting sponsor, we brought our signature hospitality and energy to the event—from interactive brand experiences to exclusive giveaways. Our CEO and Co-Founder, Nancy Almodovar, also had the distinct honor of serving as a guest judge, helping to crown the evening’s top food and wine pairings.
“This year’s Rodeo was a powerful reminder of the heart of Houston,” said Almodovar. “From celebrating our city’s vibrant culture to connecting with the community face-toface, being part of this event was an experience I’ll never forget.”
Our clients and partners also enjoyed the Rodeo in style, thanks to VIP access to a private suite during RODEOHOUSTON performances and front-row experiences at F

Choosing the right flooring for your home is one of the most impactful decisions you’ll make when remodeling or building.
Flooring not only influences the look and feel of your space, but it also affects comfort, durability, and even resale value.
With so many options available-hardwood, tile, vinyl, laminate, carpet, and more-it’s essential to weigh the pros and cons of each material and consider how it fits into your lifestyle.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you make the best choice.
• High-traffic areas (like hallways and entryways) require durable, easy-to-clean flooring like tile or luxury vinyl.
• Living rooms and bedrooms benefit from comfort and warmth; carpet or hardwood may be ideal.
• Kitchens and bathrooms need waterresistant materials such as ceramic tile, vinyl, or waterproof laminate.
If you have pets or kids, you’ll also want to prioritize scratch resistance, stain resistance, and ease of maintenance.

For me, it was way back in1996, the day I walked into a 1920s bungalow in Woodland Heights. I wasn’t house hunting—I was simply tagging along with a friend. But from the moment I stepped inside, I was hooked. While my friend ended up buying a newer and much larger home in Clear Lake, I couldn’t resist the charm and history that radiated from that first house.
Back then, the Heights was far from the vibrant community it is today. My mom worried about my safety—many homes on my
street were boarded up—and my friends were skeptical. Personally, I was more concerned about the lack of dining options, as there were only a few local favorites like King Biscuit, 11th Street Café, and Carter and Cooley Co.
That house sparked something in me. I started exploring open houses almost every weekend and eventually began investing in additional properties around the Heights and neighboring areas. As the area began to gentrify and home values climbed, my mom’s concerns faded and were replaced by curiosity: she started asking when I was buying my next property, not why.

Eight new sculptures by established and emerging Texas artists have arrived on the esplanade of Heights Boulevard in the Houston Heights for True North 2025—its twelfth installation. Nestled among the trees and foot trails of the 60-foot-wide esplanade are a wide range of extraordinary works by Elizabeth Akamatsu, Olaniyi R. Akindiya AKIRASH, Amanda Barry Jones, Susan Budge, Dave Clark, Tim Glover, Felicia Schneider, and Ben Woitena.
Beginning in 2014 and named for the compass bearing of Heights Boulevard, True North is a temporary outdoor public art installation on eight designated sites along the winding trails of that boulevard’s beautifully forested esplanade. Working in cooperation with the City of Houston Parks and Recreation and Public Works Departments and the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, True North is organized by an all-volunteer team in partnership with the Houston Heights Association—its non-profit/fiscal sponsor. A wide range of sculptures, by Texas artists, is chosen each year—based on media, theme, color and visibility—and the works remain in place for a nine-month permitted period from March to December.
Founded by Gus Kopriva and Chris Silkwood, team members behind the sculpture project today are Donna Bennett, Kopriva, Dean Ruck, Silkwood and Kelly Simmons. The project is underwritten entirely through private donations from art- and community-minded individuals, businesses, and professionals who wish to support the popular public art project and its ongoing success. Elizabeth Akamatsu—Nacogdoches, Texas “Sattie” 400 block
Elizabeth Akamatsu’s work is often inspired by the intersection of nature with technology. She says, “My interest in forms found in nature—combined with an awareness that I am dependent on technology—has inspired the creation of this sculpture. Its spherical form, made of two different hexagon shapes, is combined with orange conduit bent to refer to the petals of a flower. This conduit is often seen on the side of the road—used to protect underground communications wire. ‘Sattie’ represents nature’s natural seed disbursement similar to the way the internet spreads information around the world.”
Akamatsu was born in Yokosuka, Japan, and grew up in California.
Susan Budge—Pattison, Texas - “Cosmic Kachinas” 600 block
The Native American aesthetic that surrounded Susan Budge in her formative years reveals itself in her work to varying degrees. She says, “My creative process is spontaneous and the influences I draw from are not always intentional but rather guided by my subconscious.
help people connect to the spiritual and physical worlds with an understanding of the importance of every culture and all life. May they remind us to respect even that which we may not understand.”
Amanda Barry Jones—Houston, Texas“Nature Reclaims: Wood Pile” 800 block
Amanda Barry Jones says, “The 2024 Storms - the May derecho and Hurricane Beryl— left profound marks on our communities, especially hard-hit Garden Oaks where I live and the Greater Heights where I once lived. Uprooting ancient oaks and pines—which served as namesakes and guardians of our neighborhoods—the storms left landscapes littered with massive piles of wood and debris.”
At first glance, “Nature Reclaims: Wood Pile” is reminiscent of these storms’ destructive aftermaths, however, a closer inspection reveals the magical transformation taking place within the unearthed root ball and nooks and crannies of the tree’s broken stump. Here, Barry Jones has crafted insects, reptiles, birds, and mammals, giving new life to the planet through the decaying wood; turning a symbol of destruction into a celebration of nature’s resilience and the beauty hidden within the chaos.
Dave Clark—Tomball, Texas - “P.O.D.S.” 900 block
According to the Natural History Museum of Utah, Kachina figures represent the spiritual beings who help Pueblo culture survive. They are used to provide guidance as spirits or personification of elements in the real world. ‘Koyemsi,’ also known as the ‘Mudhead,’ is the holy clown of the Kachinas.
They may engage in games with the children during breaks in dance. ‘Koshare’ represents spirits in ceremonies invoking rain and fertility, often seen with a watermelon, as glutinous, and acting out as an unacceptable trickster to remind the community of acceptable and harmonious standards of behavior. I hope these ‘Cosmic Kachinas’
“Life is unpredictable, fascinating, and chaotic—all ideas reflected in my work. Approaching life with a touch of sarcasm and humor allows me to engage with these realities and keep a somewhat level head. All my work is a record of my own personal perceptions translated into objects and images. My sculpture often reflects those experiences through forms from a dreamlike dystopian world. The viewer is invited to experience the narrative of each piece, which is intended to pose questions rather than provide answers— encouraging viewers to decipher the story or try to make sense of the object for themselves. Though the works often reflect a sarcastic darkness, they are not intended to present a fatalistic view. Instead, they are meant to express life’s complexities, challenge our societal priorities, and consider potential outcomes. Within each sculpture lies a hidden hope often representing our resilience.”
Ben Woitena—Houston, Texas“Mandatory Dogs” 1200 block
Native Texan Ben Woitena received a BFA in sculpture from The University of Texas at Austin and an MFA from University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He has lived in Houston since 1971 and, for 27 years, was head of sculpture at Houston Museum School of Art—now Glassell School of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston—teaching figurative sculpture, life drawing, bronze casting, metal fabrication, and wood- and stone-carving.
His large outdoor sculptures have been exhibited extensively around the country and are in the permanent collections of many museums and municipalities.
Tim Glover—Houston, Texas - “Margy’s Menagerie” 1300 block
Tim Glover’s spiraling sculpture “Whirlwind” adorned Heights Boulevard’s esplanade for
the project’s early 2015 exhibition, and this year he presents the whimsically delightful “Margy’s Menagerie”—titled for his late mother-in-law, Margy Doyle, who, during the work’s early conceptual process, suggested the elephant form. Glover says, “The idea took hold” and further inspired a carousel of Margy’s favorite fantastical characters to occupy the sculpture’s found tubular glass center—originally used for holding industrial chemical compounds. Glover’s artwork has been described as imagist in the tradition of the Hairy Who of 60s Chicago. Grounded in object making, some works reference social, political, environmental, and cultural issues—mixing in a little satire for good measure.
Felicia Schneider—Houston, Texas - “On Your Mark” 1600 block
novels with female archer protagonists. Her figurative sculpture was conceptualized as a Houston version of this fantasy-genre character. Schneider says, “Like our city, in a lush setting, she is modern, strong, sometimes dangerous, and presents an image of fine lines and geometry. There is a reason archery so easily fits into this genre: it is precise and destructive, serves a function, and takes place in the natural world—characteristics which also happen to inspire my art.”
Olaniyi R. Akindiya AKIRASH— Pflugerville, Texas - “BRIGHT DAYS AHEAD #1” 1800 block
Taking inspiration from traditional West African textile weaving as a tool of communication and statement, Olaniyi R. Akindiya AKIRASH’s “Bright Days Ahead” sculpture series resulted from the artist’s own investigation into homelessness—sitting with individuals on the streets willing to speak with him about their journeys and their experiences of devastating circumstances and dangerous conditions.
AKIRASH says, “You can’t judge a book by its cover. The answers differ from one individual to another—loss of income, debt, natural disaster, illness and injury, and many suffering from mental health issues.” He created “BRIGHT DAYS AHEAD #1” with multitudes of laser cut geometric patterns meant to represent the number of homeless persons in Texas.
A multidisciplinary artist living and working in Houston, inspiration for “On Your Mark” arrived for Felicia Schneider while reading

After 40 years of marriage, we have accumulated a lot of stuff. I resist calling it “junk” or giving it some other negative label, as much of it truly has value. For example, quality pieces of art from my uncle’s Japanese woodprints and ceramics he collected during his many years in Japan. And to my surprise, I discovered serving bowls and plates from the now defunct Pier One stores that are now worth twice the price of what we originally paid for them.
It is becoming painfully clear to us that our 2500 square foot home, with its drawers, cabinets and closets completely full, should not be left like this for our children to have to go through. Like most people our age, as we look through our “stuff”, we realize we no longer have any use for much of what we own. Clothes we know we will no longer wear, scores of shoes, sports equipment, furniture that only gets in the way now, and kitchen drawers full of absolutely everything. None of which enhances our daily life or brings us joy. A four decades result of our American consumer society.
In the past few years we have had to
experience the process of clearing out our parents’ homes. Not an easy process, but I luckily had the help of my 6 siblings as we undertook this task. My wife on the
other hand, the only surviving child and heir, having lost her brother years ago, had only me to help her. As you go through another’s belongings you discover there are difficult legal questions of whether we are truly required to keep certain documents, as well as many instances of finding items that hold emotional attachment. Most of all, as long as my wife and I remain able-bodied, it seems cruel to leave this volume of stuff we own for our kids to have to go through. When we are no longer above ground, our old stuff is the last thing our children will want, as each generation finds out.
After you have sorted out the things you want to keep, sell, and hand down to others, you may want to consider passing the balance to someone who can get additional use out of them through a new concept I have just become aware of called the “gift economy”.
A gift economy is a system of exchange where valuables are given away without an explicit agreement for immediate or future rewards. It’s a way of interacting with money and understanding value that differs from the market model where goods and services are sold. In a gift economy, the focus is on relationships and the social connections forged through giving. In antiquity, when a neighboring tribe brought gifts of shells and trinkets, items of questionable value, it was about relationships, not trade.
the gift given. The act of giving creates a bond between the giver and receiver, fostering social connections and trust. While not a direct exchange, the giver’s generosity often inspires the recipient to return the favor in some way, either directly or indirectly by paying if forward.
In 2013, the Buy Nothing Project was founded by two friends, Rebecca Rockefeller and Liesl Clark, in Bainbridge Island, Washington.
What is the Buy Nothing Project?
The Buy Nothing Project encourages local communities to focus on improving the community in which they live to keep groups small and local to minimize the distance travelled to pick up items. There is no overt criticism of consumerism, but the project’s goals include saving money and reducing waste.
What are the rules of a Buy Nothing group?
The primary rule of a Buy Nothing group is that everything offered and requested must be given and received freely, with no money exchanged or expectation of a return gift. Other key rules include respecting local laws, acting with honesty, and treating all members with respect. The goal is to build a community based on sharing and gifting, rather than a typical market economy.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the rules:
What items are prohibited on Buy Nothing?
In a gift economy, there’s no immediate or planned return for
Don’t offer or request anything illegal. Follow all national, regional, and local laws, as well as the Terms of Service and community standards of any platform you’re using. The Buy Nothing Project also prohibits giving or asking for items that endorse or oppose any current political party, candidate, or ballot option.
As a member of this site, which you will need to apply and get accepted, you can adjust your setting to what viewing radius you may work with, dependent on how far you are willing to travel. There are 1.4 million on the Buy Nothing app and 12.5 million in Facebook groups. With over 8000 individual groups nationwide.
The Buy Nothing Project, Founders,
Community Leaders, and Group Admins accept no responsibility or legal liability for any loss, damage, illness, or injury arising out of group activities. No cruelty, harassment, or hate speech is permitted. If you have a complaint about another member, you have several options: ignore content that bothers you, use the Community Agreement (https:// www.buynothingproject.org/communityagreement/) to start a discussion within your group, or approach the person via other means to resolve the issue. Each Buy Nothing participant is responsible for resolving their own conflicts. Local group leaders/admins are not professional mediators.
Trust is the foundation of this gift economy. Act with honesty and empathy, using each interaction to build community.
Stealing is prohibited – do not take anything from your neighbors without specific permission. Reselling: There is no rule against the reselling of Buy Nothing Project gifts outside of the groups. You simply need to be honest about your intent to resell a gift when you request it.
Private Communications: Don’t pressure others via private message. All gifts must be given freely without expectation of reward other than the joy of giving and connecting.
No buying, selling, bartering, trading, advertising, or marketing of goods or services allowed. There is no “official” limit to giving/receiving, but admins may limit the number of times participants can comment or temporarily suspend members who appear to be commenting that they’re interested in large numbers of items in a short period. Be reasonable and show restraint so all can share. Join and participate in your local Buy Nothing community’s Facebook group as yourself, using your personal Facebook profile. You can only be a member of ONE Buy Nothing
group. Understand that you participate at your own risk and Buy Nothing can assume no responsibility for anything that occurs between participants.
Please focus on what you can share from your own hands, heart, time, and stuff. Please do not tell people where they can purchase an item, pay for a service, or receive charitable assistance. If you know of a free assistance program or free community resource that would be helpful to your group, we encourage you to check in with your group’s leader(s) about the creation of a Community Freesource document in the group’s Files.
The Freecycle Network® is made up of more than 5,000 local Town groups and with over 11 million members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Membership is free, and everything posted must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages.
If no one asked in their Buy Nothing groups, we wouldn’t be able to build gift economies. No single person is an island, so the key to a healthy gift economy is BOTH the giving
and receiving. As we wrote in our book, “The ask, and the act of receiving, is the critically important other half of the gift economy equation. Asking requires trust, courage, a willingness to show our vulnerability, and faith that our requests will not diminish our value or respect in the eyes of others.”
To offer an alternative, the founders developed and launched a stand-alone Buy Nothing app in 2021, and tried to encourage users to use their app instead; however, I think using both is the answer, as nationwide Facebook users are still way ahead in numbers.
In our consumerist world, over time, we all accumulate too much stuff. Assuming you have purchased quality items, and if you are not willing to go through the process of trying to sell it, maybe the best alternative is to give it a new life and let it bring some joy or usefulness to someone else.
As we enter more uncertain economic times, the idea of a sharing and giving economy may be the bridge many may need. Even if you are not in such need, you may know someone who could benefit. Whether they are in need of specific items or, like us, just got too much stuff, these organizations can assist folks in need as well as keep items of value out of our landfills.
Also, the desire to give away specific items without the expectation of reciprocity or payment feels alien, but once you start, it can be a liberating feeling. Parents with rooms full of children’s clothes and toys, furniture which only gets in the way, supplies for pets we no longer have can all be a bonus, even a lifeline for someone in need.

When customers ask how I got started in the furniture business, I tell them selling furniture is in my blood. My grandparents John & Elinor Campbell cornered the furniture market in Denver for over 50 years. As a young child, I would stand on a milk crate behind the counter and help my grandfather’s customers. Even though business brought my dad to Houston in 1985, I went home every summer and helped run The Red Barn Furniture, Inc. What amazed me was the great friendships that my grandfather had with his customers. Everyone knew him by name and he knew everyone’s story. I feel this is one of the characteristics that I have carried over into my own company.
In 1991, I opened up my own furniture store in a small building in the Montrose area located off of West Alabama Street in the old Pasternak’s grocery store. Named after the street, Alabama Furniture opened its doors with a mere 1,200 sq ft. I found a great niche in the Montrose community. I soon grew out of the smaller Montrose location and into the heart of the Heights in 1996. In 2000, I married the man of my dreams, Rion Enroth, who retired from the Oil & Gas industry to join me at Alabama Furniture.
After 20 years in the Heights, we discovered our current location at 4900 N. Shepherd Drive in Houston. This location has opened up a new venture for us and the loyal Alabamians who have followed Alabama Furniture for the last 34 years. We are now shipping to customers all over the United States. I graduated from the Texas Auctißon Academy and hope to add estate auctions

I am so grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of “A Look Back at the History of the Houston Heights” at the Houston Heights Association general meeting that took place on April 14th. I want to thank everyone who contributed and attended. I hope those who attended took home a little piece of the history you did not know. Whether you are a history buff, a longtime resident, or new to the neighborhood, this event gave a rare opportunity to hear firsthand accounts of the people, businesses and events that have defined the spirit of the Heights over generations.
It was a wonderful evening and everyone had a great time. And we all learned a little something that we didn’t know before! I especially thank the Houston Heights Association, President Hannah White, the staff and volunteers who were outstanding hosts for the event. It is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and my history in the Houston Heights.
I am especially grateful to Terry Burge, the former owner of the Leader Newspaper, who was the MC for the
night; Michael Wiesenthal - third generation and son of Harold of Harold’s Men’s Wear; Martin Kaplan - third generation of Kaplan’s - Ben Hur and grandson of Bessie and David Kaplan who’s first business in the Heights
