“How Brookdale HealthPlus Helps Improve the Health of Our Brookdale The Heights Residents”

Brookdale The Heights has officially launched their HealthPlus program. The care coordination program, Brookdale HealthPlus, works to help improve residents’ quality of life, and help prevent avoidable emergency room visits or hospitalizations - in partnership with their family and healthcare providers. They have a dedicated RN Care Manager

who proactively helps residents manage their health every day and serves as a partner for other healthcare professionals. Chronic conditions are better managed with a care manager’s attention to evidence-based nursing protocols, and help close gaps in care. They’re an advocate for residents to help manage care transitions, including coordinating communication between providers, reconciling medications and scheduling follow-up visits with physicians.

For Brookdale HealthPlus residents compared to similar individuals living in private homes they saw 78% fewer urgent care visits, 36% fewer hospitalizations, and 63% higher annual wellness visit completion rate. Come for a visit and learn how to live healthier at Brookdale The Heights.

Elizabeth Cole Design Décor Drapery & Furniture Showroom Now Open to the Public

Since 2009, the Elizabeth Cole Showroom has been the go-to place for home furnishings. Our 20,000+ square foot space houses favorite and varied furniture product lines, as well as an extensive selection of exceptional accessories, art, and floral products available for purchase from the showroom or custom ordered.

Elizabeth Cole presents an environment of creativity and uniqueness catering to the distinct challenges encountered by homeowners, interior designers, builders, and anyone attempting to create beautiful spaces.

Our solutions are different. Whether you need assistance from our experienced and talented design staff, or you need a small upgrade in a particular room or a complete house upgrade, Elizabeth Cole thrives on creating opportunities and relationships that are mutually beneficial.

Our pricing is different. We are competitive. Our customer service is different. Any good business advertises their excellent customer service. The way we are different is, should a challenge arise, should a mistake occur, should your project be escalated or delayed, Elizabeth Cole will exhibit genuine care and resolution during the process.

Our offerings are different. We have created a one-stop shopping

venue for all things home décor. Our resources include – Elizabeth Cole Showroom, EC Interior Design, EC Home Décor & Furniture Outlet, and EC Drapery & Bedding.

Our in-house design team is staffed with talented and experienced designers in residential and commercial design. Our complimentary in-store design services provide a valuable resource to assist people with their design needs and help accomplish their vision for their home. Our designers know the product and will not just be there to take your sales order. You will not endure endless sales’ pitches about product of which you may not even be interested. Instead, you will receive a knowledgeable person who will help you traverse the journey of shopping for items to complete your home.

We look forward to meeting you. We are on Hempstead Road at the corner of Loop 610 West. Visit us online at www.elizabethcoledesign. com. Stay connected with announcements of new product arriving, sales, and special events on Facebook! (Elizabeth Cole LLC) and Instagram (@elizabeth_cole_design).

Heights Dermatology is proud to announce that they are the first dermatology group in Houston, and second in the state, to incorporate the most advanced technology to help the group’s providers detect melanoma earlier, when it is almost 100% curable.

Nevisense is the only FDA-approved device to evaluate atypical moles that are not obvious benign spots or melanomas, guiding more precise biopsy decisions during skin cancer checks. Nevisense is clinically proven to improve diagnosis of early melanoma in atypical moles that are not clearly malignant or benign.

As an innovative practice, Heights Dermatology has a history of providing its patients with state-of-the-art equipment designed to deliver the very best results. Patients value the role of Nevisense to help catch early melanomas in real time during the practice visit. Since they can be stressful, patients trust their providers to be as thorough as possible during skin checks, especially for those who have a history of melanoma and biopsies, or who are at risk for melanoma.

Many patients are afraid of, or are uncomfortable with, the prospect of biopsy, especially if the mole is in an area that is cosmetically sensitive, e.g., chest or face. Heights Dermatology is proud to offer its patients the very best in dermatologic care.

Cabinets have an immediate impact on the finish of your home and come in several levels of construction and cost. Pretty much all cabinet suppliers will provide cabinet drawings for free if they are confident they will be awarded the sale. Some on-site cabinet makers don’t have the computer skills necessary to provide cabinet drawings, but they should be willing to sketch out what they will basically look like. The popular style is the full overlay shaker door and drawer front with soft close hinges and drawer slides. Many other door styles are available but it really comes down to your own style. I will only purchase and install cabinets made of real wood, generally Birch but sometimes Maple or White Oak if the cabinets are to be stained rather than painted.

True Custom Cabinets

True custom cabinets are made in the cabinet makers shop after the sheetrock has been installed and the cabinet maker has done final

measurements. This method is better than build on-site cabinets. There is no wasted space, and they have a shiny clear coat UV finish inside that looks fabulous. Normally their exteriors are caulked, primed, and painted but can be stained by using White Oak or other hard wood for the doors and facing. The inside already has the clear coat. These cabinets cost the most but have an unmistakable fit and finish that shows quality.

Ready To Assemble (RTA) - Unfinished Cabinets

RTA unfinished cabinets are well made and look great. The spacing between the drawers and doors is a little more than the True Custom but they are about half the cost of the True Custom. There will likely be some wasted space due to the fixed sizes but that can be minimized. They can be caulked, primed and painted on the exterior like the True Custom and the inside can be sealed and clear coated to provide a similar (but not exact) clear sheen as the True Custom. The paint cost is a little more and only

discerning eyes will notice they are not True Custom Cabinets. It’s possible to save money on the crown, spacers, trim and toe kick material by purchasing these materials from Home Depot instead.

Ready to Assemble – Pre-finished Cabinets

RTA Prefinished cabinets come with a baked-on enamel (paint look) or lacquer (stain look) finish that is durable and helps protect the wood. The cost is about the same as the RTA-Unfinished cabinets but don’t require painting, just assembly and installation. The Inside of the cabinet is also the same color as the outside but some have drawers that come in the clear coat.

Why Choose a “Board Certified” Attorney?

Lawyers often cite various accomplishments, awards and even “expertise” on their websites and advertisements. However, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization was established by the Supreme Court of

Texas as the only governing board authorized to certify attorneys in legal specialty areas.

Board certification is a mark of excellence and a distinguishing accomplishment. There are more than 100,000 lawyers licensed to practice law in Texas. Only 7,400 of these have earned the right to be publicly recognized as Board Certified specialists in one of 24 select areas of law, including personal injury trial law. Board certified lawyers earn the right to publicly represent themselves as a specialist in their select area of law. They are the only attorneys allowed to do so by the State Bar of Texas. This designation sets them apart as being an attorney with the highest public commitment to excellence in their area of law.

I have been Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 2008. I am one of only 1,704 Texas attorneys that hold this specialized certification.

In order to achieve and retain this status, I have had to meet an extensive list of qualifications, including:

• Being licensed to practice law for at least five years (I have been licensed since 1998)

• Devoting a specific percentage of my practice to personal injury law

• Handling a wide variety of matters in personal injury law to demonstrate my experience and involvement in the field

• Regularly attending continuing education seminars in order to remain up to date on the current trends in law

• Evaluation by peers, including fellow lawyers and judges

• Passing a comprehensive 6-hour written examination

• Applying for recertification every five years

• Trying a requisite number of cases to a jury verdict, including personal injury cases

If you would like to speak to a board-certified personal injury trial lawyer, please call me today.

How I Helped Sarah Buy Her Dream Home (and Avoid a Financial Nightmare)

W

hen Sarah first walked into my office, she looked overwhelmed. Her heart was set on a home in the Heights, but the complexity of mortgage options had her second-guessing.

“I’ve read so many horror stories,” she said quietly. She didn’t want to overpay or, worse, risk losing the house because of a poor financial decision.

With over 50 years of lending experience, I reassured her this was a common feeling and something we could handle together. Step by step, I helped clear up her misconceptions. For example, Sarah thought she’d need a 20%

down payment—a belief that kept her renting longer than necessary. I showed her options requiring as little as 3% down, depending on the loan type.

Once that barrier was lifted, we moved on to tailor a loan that fit her financial situation. Her student loans made her hesitant, but I explained that debt isn’t always a deal-breaker. By focusing on her debt-to-income ratio, we found an option with a slightly higher interest rate but no PMI, ultimately saving her money in the long run.

Eclectic Home has become one of Houston’s destinations for affordable home furnishings and accessories. Now into its twenty third year, Eclectic Home stands out from other stores based on its design talent and desire to help homeowners solve their design needs. Everyone wants a home that reflects his or her personality….and at Eclectic Home, there is something for everyone’s tastes.

Lighting is a very important part of good design. Eclectic Home carries an assortment of interesting and unusual lamps and specialty chandeliers.

Sarah also feared unexpected expenses after moving in, like property taxes and repairs. To prevent this, we calculated her budget with a buffer for these costs. By the end, Sarah wasn’t just excited—she was confident.

With pre-approval in hand, she stood out in a competitive market and, soon, her agent secured a charming bungalow within her budget. Sarah’s story is a reminder of the importance of finding the right loan for your unique needs. If you’re buying in the Heights or anywhere else in Houston, let’s make your mortgage experience a success story.

Move Like a Baby to Improve Your Fitness Level

We’ve all been witness to a baby as he or she becomes ambulatory. Think about the key benchmarks that are talked about. “She can hold her head up now,” morphs into “she turned over today,” which quickly becomes “she’s crawling.” And then comes the big one, “she took her first step today!”

As we age however, aches and pains or injuries or illness cause us to move less and less, which leads to loss of flexibility and strength and influences our ability to feel confident when moving through activities of daily life.

Let’s break down the example of the baby. When a baby is learning to move, he or she is not exercising, but rather learning to use the body as a unit to accomplish a specific task. In short, they are developing their proprioception, or the unconscious awareness of the body’s position in space.

Traditional exercise, especially as it applies to increasing strength, involves applying resistance to movement to ask the muscles to get stronger. If we’ve lost much of our natural

ability to move about easily, then as we begin to increase the load on the body, the possibility of injury increases.

If you’ve been inactive for a while, do this quick self-assessment and see how you do.

1) Can you sit on a low chair without bracing with your hands and then stand up without pushing off?

2) Can you get on the floor and get back up without pulling on a stationary object?

3) Can you get on your hands and knees, slightly lift your knees off the floor and crawl forward and backward?

Look at the photos for a demonstration. If this is too difficult, then simply practice the baby crawl and work on balancing on opposite hand/knee while the other hand and knee are off the floor.

These tests can reveal a great deal about your proprioception and hence, your movement ability. The more comfortable you can become with your body as it moves through space, the more productive any kind of formal exercise program will be.

2314 Watson St.: A Living Connection to the Past

When Karen and Chuck Davis purchased their home at 2314 Watson St. in 1995, they were welcomed with a warm, homemade pecan pie from Mrs. Schade, their 90-year-old neighbor. Mrs. Schade, who had lived next door at 2312 Watson St. since 1920, became a cherished part of their lives, sharing stories of the neighborhood’s rich history.

Mrs. Schade often took the Davis’s back to the 1920s, a time when the Heights was just beginning to grow. She recalled how a grocery wagon would pass through the alley behind their homes, offering fresh milk and produce to the residents. Back then, there were no privacy fences—just chain-link fences—creating a strong sense of community. Neighbors knew each other well, often shopping together, chatting across their backyards, and exchanging news. The Davis’s have continued this time-honored tradition, even working with the family that purchased Mrs. Schade’s home in 2000 to build a wrought-iron fence that preserves the open, neighborly feel.

But the most fascinating stories came from Mrs. Schade’s memories of the Greenstein family, who lived at 2314 Watson from 1943 to 1962. According to Mrs. Schade, Ed Greenstein, an engineer with the Southern Pacific Railroad, played a key role in the donation of the

iconic steam engine SP 982 to Houston in May 1957. The massive locomotive was displayed in Hermann Park for over 50 years and then across from Union Station at Minute Maid Park until 2021.

After retiring in 1958, Mr. Greenstein continued his connection to the railroad and SP 982 by volunteering as a conductor of the Hermann Park sightseeing train, which still offers families rides through the park today. As time passed, the Davis’s treasured these stories, preserving the neighborhood’s history. Now, as Mrs. Davis prepares to retire, she is hoping to pass along her piece of history. The home at 2314 Watson St. is not just a house— it’s a living connection to the past.

For those interested in making this timeless home their own, Joanne Vest of Texas Residential Specialists is available to provide more information.

You can reach Joanne at 832-752-8808 or hello@joannevest.com. Joanne promises to welcome you to your new home with a warm pecan pie!

Why choose a Certified Professional Organizer?

There are hundreds of home organizers in the Houston area, but of those hundreds less than 10 have the prestigious designation of Certified Professional Organizer® (CPO®). The Board of Certification of Professional Organizers (BCPO) is the only national board to offer a certification for professional organizers. Recently, Mary Jo Contello, founder of Organized by MJ, received this prestigious designation after passing a difficult exam focused on the rigors of professional organizing. CPO’s® are required to continue education in their field and adhere to the highest ethical standards.

Organized by MJ (OMJ) was founded in 2016 with the goal of decluttering and organizing client’s homes and offices as well as providing them with common sense solutions for lasting organized spaces.

An Organized by MJ Success Story

Recently, a client contacted MaryJo regarding her husband’s closet. The couple lives in a bungalow in The Heights, so closet space was an issue. The closet had become so overstuffed that every morning was a timeconsuming challenge to get dressed. The situation was assessed by MaryJo, and a plan was developed for decluttering and organizing. Clothes that no longer fit were removed generating five bags for donation. The remaining items were organized by type, and easily accessible. The client was left with a system and process that was manageable and made his mornings run smoothly.

OMJ understands that your time is valuable and that your home functions better when it’s organized. We will help you take control of your surroundings, manage your time and process your paperwork while creating systems and solutions that make your home

run more smoothly so you can get on with the important things in life.

A Certified Professional Organizer continues to elevate their work with clients to ensure successful outcomes.

Advantages of a Will Drafted by a Professional

Having your Will drafted by a professional is essential for several reasons, including minimizing the possibility of it being contested. Your attorney understands the laws and will ensure your Will complies with legal requirements and is valid.

A well-drafted Will clearly outlines your wishes, reducing ambiguities that can lead to disputes among heirs. Attorneys know common mistakes and pitfalls and can draft your Will to avoid these. A professionally drafted Will includes provisions to address potential conflicts, including no-contest clauses, discouraging heirs from challenging the will.

A professional can provide tailored advice based on your unique situation, helping to address family dynamics and potential issues up-front. Additionally, since the Attorney and their staff perform these services often, they will be excellent witnesses in the event of a will contest.

Also having your Will and other estate Planning Documents drafted before you are ill, lessens the emotional and financial burden. Making these decisions and appointments to get your documents drafted when you are ill becomes a much greater burden. Additionally, having your affairs in order will also bring you peace of mind.

Ensuring that your will is properly drafted and legally sound reduces the likelihood of it being contested, and ensures excellent witnesses in the event of a contest thereby providing peace of mind for you and your loved ones.

Call us today, if you desire assistance. We will work with you to make it as simple and easy of a process as possible and you will have the peace of mind you deserve.

Houston Heights Housing Market Update

As a long-time resident of the Heights, I have had the pleasure of seeing the growth of this vibrant community. It’s truly an amazing place to live, with walkable streets, excellent schools, incredible dining options, and lovely neighbors! Houston’s economic resiliency continues to attract new residents and the Heights remains a sought-after area for real estate.

As we wrap up the year, I would like to share an update on the current market. The real estate market in the Heights has seen a lot of activity this last quarter! I’ve gathered the Houston Heights stats through the first three quarters and here are what the numbers show

From January to October, 436 homes were sold! Inventory has gradually increased, which has

alleviated some of the market’s tightness and is providing more choices for buyers. That’s great news for those who want to join the community or for those who want to find a home that better suits their lifestyle!

The average home price reached $972,155, with an average sales price of $419.96 per square foot. Heights homes continue to appreciate in value!

Homes have typically spent around 29 days on the market, which shouldn’t discourage potential sellers. Before October ended, there were already 46 properties scheduled to close in November 2024, compared to just 34 a year prior.

What does this mean for buyers and sellers as we head into 2025? Your home continues to be an investment and it’s still a great time to sell. Rates aren’t expected to significantly drop anytime soon, and since home prices should also continue to rise, buyers won’t gain anything by waiting as there will be more buyers who enter the market and begin competing for those homes.

If you’re considering a move or sale in the Heights, now is a great time to stay informed and leverage these trends! Wondering if it’s the right time to enter the housing market? I would love to help you. Don’t hesitate to reach out by phone or email.

We’re wrapping up some great projects this year – The Shepherd restoration project is underway with fresh mosaics all throughout Shepherd between Westheimer and 59, you know, where the terrible construction has been underway for the last couple years… We’re part of that too, but don’t blame the tile guys.

We wrapped up some Pillar work with the Norhill Association, having prepped and coated the existing pillars, and recolored the street names and blocks. If you’ve been through Norhill lately, I’m sure you’ve seen them.

Happening in 2024

Between the 1920’s and the 1950’s, Houston used blue and white, unglazed mosaic tiles inlaid in curbs to indicate addresses and street names. As Houston grows and continues to rebuild, these pieces of history are quickly disappearing. Curb Appeal Blues is working with the Blue Tile Project to bring back the Blue Tile as a symbol of Houston’s support of Historic Preservation, local business, and the arts. These are a great permanent replacement for the painted address numbers on your curb!

It’s believed that next to teeth, the eyebrows are the most important features on any face. Eyebrow trends come and go, from thin and sharp to bold and bushy à la Cara Delevingne and basically every other model who’s been hot in the past few years.

But the latest trend we can’t get enough of is microblading, a new tattoo technique that fills brows out or reshapes them by drawing on tiny lines that look like individual hairs. We know what you’re thinking: tattooed eyebrows? No way. But hear us out. Microblading leaves brows looking natural and takes years off of your face! It sounds terrifying, and there’s this stigma of grandma’s blue arch eyebrows, but these are completely different.

Microblading is done with a hand-held tool made out of needles that puts pigment into the skin, but doesn’t go as deep as a normal tattoo would.

It’s also semi-permanent. Your micro bladedd microbladed brows should last between two and three years.

Imagine going to Bikram yoga, swimming or simply just waking up in the morning with fabulous brows! Now it’s possible with microblading at La Paz Day Spa.

Alabama Furniture’s owner, Sherri Enroth celebrates 33 years of Business!

When customers ask how I got started in the furniture business, I tell them selling furniture is in my blood. My grandparents John & Elinor Campbell cornered the furniture market in Denver for over 50 years. As a young child, I would stand on a milk crate behind the counter and help my grandfather’s customers. Even though business brought my dad to Houston in 1985, I went home every summer and helped run The Red Barn Furniture, Inc. What amazed me was the great friendships that my grandfather had with his customers. Everyone knew him by name and he knew everyone’s story. I feel this is one of the characteristics that I have carried over into my own company.

In 1991, I opened up my own furniture store in a small building in the Montrose area located off of West Alabama Street in the old Pasternak’s grocery store. Named after the street, Alabama Furniture opened its doors with a mere 1,200 sq ft. I found a great niche in the Montrose community. I soon grew out of the smaller Montrose location and into the heart of the Heights in 1996. In 2000, I

married the man of my dreams, Rion Enroth, who retired from the Oil & Gas industry to join me at Alabama Furniture.

After 20 years in the Heights, we discovered our current location at 4900 N. Shepherd Drive in Houston. This location has opened up a new venture for us and the loyal Alabamians who have followed Alabama Furniture for the last 33 years. We are now shipping to customers all over the United States. I graduated from the Texas Auction Academy and hope to add estate auctions in the near future. I love what I do! Every day is like Christmas. Thank you to all of our dedicated employees and Consignors both past and present that have made Alabama Furniture an awesome place! If you are looking for a great place to work, come and join our team!

We want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support. In celebration of 33 years, we will have extra special pricing! Come and check us out and visit us at our website, alabamafurniture.com.

The Houston Farmers Market

We were a much younger couple back then, as we led a small caravan through the neighborhood, Halloween decorations dotting some of the houses. I was driving the U-Haul, with many family members in their vehicles behind me, bringing all that Dualise, the kids and myself had to our names from Missouri City. My family members had chosen to live in the suburbs - nice places, planned communities with curbed streets and expansive front lawns. Driving through

the Heights though, as we crisscrossed the streets to reach our home, I could see most of my family had noticeable reactions,as there was a mishmash of mainly smallish homes that looked abandoned or worse. That was a little over 39 years ago and, as with everything else, much has changed since then.

For a historical perspective, this was the year “New Coke” was introduced, “The Cosby Show” and “Family Ties” dominated TV ratings, and Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” was No. 1 on the charts. There were far fewer places to eat then and there was nowhere to get a good cup of coffee or anything other than a “light” beer.

Like the few folks buying homes here at the time, we had two good reasons. First, Dualise had a job downtown and the commute from the Heights would be easier for her, as traffic was much lighter than it is now. Also, I was working in Spring Branch, so the commute from the Heights would have me going against traffic, making my drive almost painless. And if living in a 60-70 year old bungalow was your thing, you too could have bought a home here for a little less than $33 per square foot. Current estimates seem to put than number closer to $400 per square foot.

As the cook in a financially struggling family, one of the nice surprises I found was Canino’s Farmers Market. Since 1958, the Caninos have run this institution that has been serving Houstonians since the 1940’s. The main attraction for most of us who frequented was “the store”, as the entire operation was segmented into several sections. You could buy just about any variety of vegetables and fruits in season, along with eggs, bacon, sausages, salt pork, and etc. Eventually it became my go-to-place for collard greens, which I am assigned to cook for almost every family dinner. The building was not air conditioned and it had shiny concrete floors, which were always spotless. There were large flat bins, located about waist high, two rows down the middle and attached to the walls. These bins were full of the best, freshest produce you could find anywhere.

Much of the area behind the “store” resembled what exists now with other produce vendors, spice and other specialty foods. You could fill 2 big paper grocery bags full of food and walk out paying what seemed to be a relatively small amount of money. A great aid for a young family trying to eat right.

About 20 years ago, I interviewed Bill Canino for an article. The most memorable of his stories was about the weekends at his store. A couple of the independent ambulance drivers would stage their rigs in his parking lot on Friday and Saturday evenings, knowing there would be the inevitable call due to a shooting or stabbing in the neighborhood.

Fall Pumpkin Patch

But today’s farmers market is a world apart. Today, the 18-acre market located on Airline Drive in the historic Greater Northside District is Houston’s largest and oldest farmers market. The Houston Farmers Market attracted farmers from all corners of Texas, where they had an opportunity to sell their produce and products to a larger population, eventually evolving to become an epicenter of Houston’s vibrant culinary community.

Discover fresh produce, spices, exotic fruits, artisanal craftmanship, extraordinary restaurants, exemplary retailers and a sense of community in Houston’s historic Greater Northside District.

Whether you’re a culinary explorer seeking new tastes or someone who cherishes

traditional flavors, you’ll find something to delight your senses.

Stroll through rows of farm-fresh vegetables and fruits, from juicy corn and crisp green beans to vibrant kale and succulent bananas. Don’t miss their exotic fruit offerings, featuring unique delights like dragon fruit, papaya, starfruit and more. Each visit promises a new discovery to add to your family’s meals, bringing the freshest flavors from farm to table.

Spice up your kitchen with great selections of fresh herbs and spices. Find everything you need to elevate your culinary creations, from the fragrant leaves of basil, mint, rosemary, and thyme to an array of spices that bring depth and aroma to your dishes. These herbs are perfect for adding that special touch to

salads, sauces, and everything in between.

This farmers market is more than a shopping destination – it’s a place to relax and enjoy a meal or a cup of coffee in a beautiful setting. For unique Tex-Mex, visit Alamo Tamales. Known not only for their tamales and tacos, but for their mouthwatering barbacoa, hearty carne guisada, and crispy chicarron as well.

Crawfish and Noodles offer Viet-Cajun dishes, such as Viet-Cajun crawfish, Basil Fried Rice, and Fish Sauce Rice, in addition to new authentic Vietnamese dishes.

Or, visit Underbelly Burger. Their burger has all the simplicity of a good old-fashioned hamburger made with top quality ingredients, plus sidewinder fries, bacon sausage hot dogs, and plenty of local beer.

Take a break from your shopping and savor a fresh-brewed coffee.

Yes, many of us old-timers lament the loss of many things in our neighborhood. The slower pace, the absence of rudeness, lighter and freeflowing traffic. However, the Houston Farmers Market has retained many of the features I had become used to, and appreciated, while updating the venue to the realities of the neighborhoods that now surround it. If you have never been, go by. Just being there is a visual experience. Expand your horizons.

Maybe you can take home some jackfruit and spend the rest of the weekend trying to figure out what to do with it, like me.

Open vs Defined Floor Plans: When looking for a new home, whether it’s new to you or a new construction, a common deal breaker is an open concept, whether you like it or not.

While working in this industry, I have clients that want to open their kitchen to the family room so they could be in the kitchen prepping, cooking or cleaning and still see their children. The goal is to interact with kids in front of the tv or doing homework at the island.

You may be hosting guests for the big game and at the island sharing a charcuterie board and a glass of wine. You can enjoy entertaining your guests, engaging with them while cooking or preparing food. But the stroller may be stored by the back door and the play area is near the kitchen for easy access when it’s snack time.

This clutter will be more visible, making storage more intentional and organization a priority. Also, noise levels are higher without walls. Without as may walls, open floor plans can allow in more light and be more inviting.

Open floor plans are still popular but there is a trend to create defined spaces that balance openness with privacy. The kids and their

friends can play a game in front of the TV and the adults can take over the dining room for dinner and relax without interruptions. When hosting a dinner party, the buffet can be setup at the island and the dining room will invite you to be seated, enjoying the meal and company. These spaces can create privacy, control noise from other rooms separating while still providing communal areas and reduce distractions.

Another benefit to closed floor plans, this will enhance safety by allowing homeowners to control access to certain areas. For example, the door to an office can be closed to restrict access. Closed floor plans can create a sense of warmth that is associated with classic home designs.

Whether you like open or closed floor plans, we can make the space comfy and inviting.

Electrical Safety for the Holidays

It’s almost that time again and we want everyone to have a safe and happy holiday. With that in mind, here are a few tips to make sure your holiday lighting is up to par:

■ Now is a good time to evaluate the load on your panel and to install additional outdoor weatherproof GFCI outlets with in-use covers. Installing outlets in corners or under eaves and overhangs can reduce your use of extension cords and can be safely tucked away. To alter, repair, replace or remodel electrical systems, permitting will be required

■ Please do not plug extension cords into a power strip, which can overload an outlet. Use extension cords that are rated to carry the electrical loads connected to them.

■ Check to make sure you have sufficient power sources for your display before you purchase lighting.

■ Only use UL (Underwriters Laboratory)

approved lighting and devices.

■ Read the instructions on your lights to see how many strings are allowed on a circuit and do not overload the circuit. Be sure to take into consideration what other loads you have on the circuits.

■ Check older previously used lights for frayed wires, broken sockets, or bare wiring.

■ LED lighting can be better and safer because they use less energy, allow users to link more strands together and the bulbs run cooler.

■ Avoid power lines.

■ And finally, the National Electrical Code, (NEC0, section 590.3 (B) permits the installation of temporary holiday decorative lighting and associated wiring, as long as it is not up more than 90-days.

From Porch to Stage: The Story Behind Houston’s Tunes on 10th

“Just another quirky little thing to love about living in the Heights in Houston,” wrote a neighbor on social media after discovering Tunes on 10th, a concert series organized and performed by professional musicians.

Tunes on 10th is a series of porch concerts that provide beautiful music for Houstonians while supporting local musicians. It all takes place on the front porch of Margaret Pichon. Neighbors gather with blankets, chairs, picnic baskets, and friends; many even bike over.

Pichon’s story is a testament to the strength and spirit of community.

“I got my start as a porch aficionado for Tunes on 10th quite by accident,” Pichon said.

While biking through the Heights with her late husband in early May 2020, the Pichons recognized a young musician who performed with an orchestra they held season tickets to. Many musicians were performing online to raise money at the time, but this young woman said she’d only performed on her porch once.

“Without a second thought, I invited her to play on my porch,” Pichon said. “She declined, but called me that very night with her program, and we set up the first porch concert. She had tears in her eyes walking up my porch, as she hadn’t worn her concert clothes in months. I invited the neighborhood, who sat socially distanced. I passed a basket around for tips, and it was a beautiful evening.”

Immediately after, Pichon began looking for

other musicians and was introduced to Natalie Gaynor, Principal Second Violinist of the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet Orchestras, and her boyfriend Spencer Park, a French horn player also with the Opera and Ballet orchestras. The duo became the “porch managers” and arranged for other professional musicians to perform.

The second porch performance was rained out halfway through, but Pichon credits the rain date as when the concert series took off. They invested in a sound system from the tips to improve the quality of the performances.

The third concert welcomed the “Covid 5” Brass Quintet that Park put together. They later changed the name to the Brass Street Boys with input from the audience. The group was quite popular!

Neighborhood kids walk through the audience with tip baskets provided by Pichon. All tips go back to the musicians, and several were

overwhelmed with gratitude for the chance to keep up with bills.

Tunes on 10th now has its own sound engineer, professional bass player Dave Connor, who has also put together several jazz groups that have performed at Tunes on 10th.

Neighbor Emmanuel Nunez Centeno, Director of ilove11th.org, which hosts an annual festival, December 7, this year on 11th St., provided a great summation of the porch concert series.

“In a city of 7 million people, it’s amazing how @tuneson10th exemplifies the magic of neighborhoods where people feel safe to walk, bike, and roll to live, work, play,” Centeno said. “Tunes on 10th began as a lifeline for musicians, a way to keep the music alive after the pandemic silenced so many stages. it’s blossomed into a unique experience where anyone, regardless of background, can enjoy world-class performances. It’s a chance to connect with neighbors and celebrate the universal joy that music brings.”

To date, Tunes on 10th has hosted nearly 50 concerts over the past four years, supporting an incredible array of talent.

“I still can’t believe that my front porch has become a music venue for such incredible professional performances accessible to everyone,” Pichon said. “Though the purpose initially was to support the musicians when they didn’t have a stage, the porch concert series became so successful that we continue to have concerts.”

The concerts are advertised with posters on

Pichon’s fence and around the neighborhood. An Instagram account, @tuneson10th, also managed by Gaynor, is approaching 3,000 followers.

“I am very proud to host Tunes on 10th, and I hope to see more neighbors at future concerts!” said Margaret Pichon.
