There are hundreds of home organizers in the Houston area, but of those hundreds less than 10 have the prestigious designation of Certified Professional Organizer® (CPO®). The Board of Certification of Professional Organizers (BCPO) is the only national board to offer a certification for professional organizers. Recently, Mary Jo Contello, founder of Organized by MJ, received this prestigious designation after passing
a difficult exam focused on the rigors of professional organizing. CPO’s® are required to continue education in their field and adhere to the highest ethical standards.
Organized by MJ (OMJ) was founded in 2016 with the goal of decluttering and organizing client’s homes and offices as well as providing them with common sense solutions for lasting organized spaces.
Recently, a client contacted MaryJo regarding her husband’s closet. The couple lives in a bungalow in The Heights, so closet space was an issue. The closet had become so overstuffed that every morning was a time-consuming challenge to get dressed. The situation was assessed by MaryJo, and a plan was developed for decluttering and organizing.
Clothes that no longer fit were removed generating five bags for donation.
The remaining items were organized by type, and easily accessible. The client was left with a system and process that was manageable and made his mornings run smoothly.
OMJ understands that your time is valuable and that your home functions better when it’s organized. We will help you take control of your surroundings, manage your time and process your paperwork while creating systems and solutions that make your home run more smoothly so you can get on with the important things in life.
A Certified Professional Organizer continues to elevate their work with clients to ensure successful outcomes.

Forty years in business, OH MY! January 1, 2025, we passed that great milestone. We owe a great deal of thanks to you, our customers and neighbors, for calling on us to continue to serve the Houston Heights that we love so much, the great City of Houston and surrounding communities. It has been our pleasure!
The storms of last summer were events that were unrivaled. After all the storms, hurricanes, ice storms and droughts of the last
few years, we can say, that never in 40 years, have we seen the electrical damage that our City and Community suffered in 2024. And it just keeps on giving, due to the powerful surges caused by massive power loss, that weakened electrical components. I believe this was a record year for panel replacements, generator hookups, and EV A installations.
As we live and work in the Heights, we too suffered damage at our home and business, but, God willing, we managed to get through it
and be available to our customers, as soon as possible.
A great deal of that gratitude goes to our hardworking and dedicated technicians that got back to work as soon as they could. Thanks for the great patience and kind attitudes of our clients that we experienced throughout the months of 2024.
We look forward to many more years. Call if we can be of service and we will do our best to take care of your electrical needs.
With the rise in remote work, there’s a growing movement towards creating spaces that serve multiple purposes. A survey by Houzz revealed that 75% of respondents had undertaken home renovation projects postpandemic, with the creation of home offices and multi-functional areas being a primary focus.
Home offices that double as guest rooms or play areas are prime examples of this trend. Kitchens have also evolved, becoming larger and more versatile, accommodating cooking and other activities that became more frequent during the pandemic.
As the demand for remote work continues, our living and working habits are changing. Could your dining room become an office? Would it make sense to turn an office into a gym or work from the kitchen? The pandemic shifted our thinking, leading us to repurpose spaces like dining rooms into offices, playrooms, or storage areas. Storage solutions are always top of mind, and there are numerous ways to incorporate them into a room while still using it as a gathering space for family meals.

Planning for the future is key to making these ideas a reality. Collaborating with a remodeler to discuss your future needs, ideas, and how you use these areas can help you update your home to make it more usable. Your home has potential, and you can increase usable space without expanding its footprint. By adding a second floor to your garage, for example, can provide additional sleeping, office, or playroom/gym or possibly a garage apartment. Lighting, spatial layouts and planning for a controlled atmosphere is important with your family, potentially in the next room.
Outdoor spaces can also be transformed to create a vacation-like atmosphere. Your ideas can become reality with proper planning and execution.

It’s believed that next to teeth, the eyebrows are the most important features on any face. Eyebrow trends come and go, from thin and sharp to bold and bushy à la Cara Delevingne and basically every other model who’s been hot in the past few years.
But the latest trend we can’t get enough of is microblading, a new tattoo technique that fills brows out or reshapes them by drawing on tiny lines that look like individual hairs. We know what you’re thinking: tattooed eyebrows? No way. But hear us out. Microblading leaves brows looking natural and takes years off of your face! It sounds terrifying, and there’s this stigma of grandma’s blue arch eyebrows, but these are completely different.
Microblading is done with a hand-held tool made out of needles that puts pigment into the skin, but doesn’t go as deep as a normal tattoo would.
It’s also semi-permanent. Your micro bladed brows should last between two and three years.

Since 1996, I have lived exclusively on ½ streets in the Heights— first 7th ½ Street and now 8th ½ Street. I can say with confidence that these streets are just as full of charm as full-numbered and other streets in the Heights. Our neighborhood is known for its rich history and charming architecture and these unique 1/2 streets add to the character of the area. Of course, they require a bit more communication to ensure first-time guests and delivery drivers find their way to the right house.
I’ve often wondered about the origin of these quirky streets. It appears that as the neighborhood grew in the last 19th and early 20th centuries, additional roads were needed to accommodate housing, businesses, and transportation needs. Instead of renumbering the entire grid, city planners and developers opted for a more practical solution—designating the new streets with fractional numbers. This approach maintained the continuity of the original street names while allowing for expanded infrastructure. These streets serve as small yet essential connectors within the Heights, offering a unique navigation challenge to newcomers while delighting long-term residents who appreciate their historic charm.
Today, these fractional streets continue to add to the Heights’ reputation as a one-of-a-kind community that honors its past. They are a symbol of the balance between historical preservation and urban development that makes this area so special. Whether you’re walking along Heights Boulevard or exploring one of its charming ½ streets, the Heights offers a timeless and unique sense of place.
Personally, I can’t imagine living anywhere else—but as I’ve joked over the years, maybe one day I’ll be able to afford a whole street!
If you’re looking to buy or sell a home on a ½ street—or any other street in this wonderful neighborhood— I’d love to help!

Let’s find the perfect street to start your story!
Are any of the following misconceptions keeping you from having a Will or Estate Plan in place? Please do not allow yourself to fall into these common misconceptions.
1. Only for the Wealthy: Many believe estate planning is necessary for the wealthy. However, probate costs less with an adequately drafted Will. Leaving this world without a Will causes your loved ones to suffer a greater burden. Probate will then take longer and be more expensive.
2. Estate Planning is Only About Money: Many people think estate plannings sole purpose is to distribute their assets once they have died. However, it determines who makes your healthcare decisions and manages your affairs when you cannot.
3. Trusts are Only for the Rich: Although many people do not need a trust, a trust can benefit wealth management, provide privacy, control, and avoid probate.
4. It’s a One-Time Task: Some people think that once they create an estate plan, they never need to update it. As your life circumstances and laws change, so should your estate planning.
5. I Don’t Need a Lawyer: Some use online templates or forms without legal assistance. A lack of understanding can often lead to errors or oversights with significant consequences. Unfortunately, it is too late to correct if errors are not discovered until after death.
6. My Family Will Know My Wishes: People believe their family will know their wishes. However, we often cannot make them happen without formal documentation and authority. Often, disputes arise.
7. Life Insurance is Enough: Life insurance can be a part of an estate plan but does not replace the need of the estate plan to distribute all assets and grant power to do so.
Eclectic Home has become one of Houston’s destinations for affordable home furnishings and accessories. Now into its twenty third year, Eclectic Home stands out from other stores based on its design talent and desire to help homeowners solve their design needs. Everyone wants a home that reflects his or her personality….and at Eclectic Home, there is something for everyone’s tastes. Lighting is a very important part of good design. Eclectic Home carries an assortment of interesting and unusual lamps and specialty chandeliers. Accent furniture from traditional to contemporary are always available. You will find a selection of interesting chests, end
8. Estate Planning is Only for Older People: Many think estate planning is only relevant for older adults. However, unexpected events can happen at any age. If others rely upon you for support, you must have an estate plan to provide for those loved ones after your death.
9. Estate Planning is Too Complicated: While it can appear complicated, an attorney’s role is to assist you in understanding your choices and document those choices in written documents.
10. Wills Avoid Probate: A common misconception is that having a will guarantees that assets will avoid probate. For any Will to be valid, it must go through a probate process.
Give yourself and your loved ones peace of mind with a professionally drafted estate plan. In this situation, ignorance is not blissful.
When customers ask how I got started in the furniture business, I tell them selling furniture is in my blood. My grandparents John & Elinor Campbell cornered the furniture market in Denver for over 50 years. As a young child, I would stand on a milk crate behind the counter and help my grandfather’s customers. Even though business brought my dad to Houston in 1985, I went home every summer and helped run The Red Barn Furniture, Inc. What amazed me was the great friendships that my grandfather had with his customers. Everyone knew him by name and he knew everyone’s story. I feel this is one of the characteristics that I have carried over into my own company.
In 1991, I opened up my own furniture store in a small building in the Montrose area located off of West Alabama Street in the old Pasternak’s grocery store. Named after the street, Alabama Furniture opened its doors with a mere 1,200 sq ft. I found a great niche in the Montrose community. I soon grew out of the smaller Montrose location and into the heart of the Heights in 1996. In 2000, I
married the man of my dreams, Rion Enroth, who retired from the Oil & Gas industry to join me at Alabama Furniture.
After 20 years in the Heights, we discovered our current location at 4900 N. Shepherd Drive in Houston. This location has opened up a new venture for us and the loyal Alabamians who have followed Alabama Furniture for the last 33 years. We are now shipping to customers all over the United States. I graduated from the Texas Auction Academy and hope to add estate auctions in the near future. I love what I do! Every day is like Christmas. Thank you to all of our dedicated employees and Consignors both past and present that have made Alabama Furniture an awesome place! If you are looking for a great place to work, come and join our team!
We want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support. In celebration of 33 years, we will have extra special pricing! Come and check us out and visit us at our website, alabamafurniture.com.
As your trusted local real estate advocate, I’m here to highlight key challenges facing the housing market in 2025. A recent report by Clever surveyed over 300 agents, identifying three major hurdles:
1. Economic Uncertainty
With 56% of agents citing economic uncertainty, shifting buyer demand and potential downturns could slow activity. Sellers should price competitively, while buyers who stay flexible may find great deals.
2. Low Inventory
Limited housing supply remains a concern, with 51% of agents flagging it. Fewer new builds and downsizing boomers mean sellers face less competition, but buyers may need to act quickly.
3. Declining Affordability
Over half of agents predict affordability will worsen. Interest rates may or may not decrease in 2025, and increased demand could push prices up. Buyers might consider fixer-uppers to stretch their budgets.
Despite these challenges, I’m here to help you navigate the market with confidence. Whether buying or selling, let’s turn 2025 into a year of opportunity! Working with a real estate professional is paramount to ensuring you get the most out of your transaction. I’m here to provide the expertise and support you need every step of the way.

e’re wrapping up some great projects this year – The Shepherd restoration project is underway with fresh mosaics all throughout Shepherd between Westheimer and 59, you know, where the terrible construction has been underway for the last couple years… We’re part of that too, but don’t blame the tile guys.
We wrapped up some Pillar work with the Norhill Association, having prepped and coated the existing pillars, and recolored the street names and blocks. If you’ve been through Norhill lately, I’m sure you’ve seen them.
Between the 1920’s and the 1950’s, Houston used blue and white, unglazed mosaic tiles inlaid in curbs to indicate addresses and street names.
As Houston grows and continues to rebuild, these pieces of history are quickly disappearing. Curb Appeal Blues is working with the Blue Tile Project to bring back the Blue Tile as a symbol of Houston’s support of Historic Preservation, local business, and the arts. These are a great permanent replacement for the painted address numbers on your curb!

Early socialization for puppies should be considered a “behavior vaccine” since positively exposing them to a wide variety of people, animals, and environments is vital for developing a well-adjusted and confident adult dog. Puppyhood affords the best opportunity to influence a dog’s behavior. Deficiencies in early development can have adverse effects on a dog’s behavior and disposition later in life. Therefore, once your puppy receives one or two sets of vaccinations, exposure to the outside world should not be ruled out but should be carefully considered and controlled.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior encourages owners to take their pets to puppy classes as early as possible. In the AVSAB’s Socialization statement, they conclude that “behavioral problems are the number one cause of relinquishment to shelters. Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age.” When the risk factor of a puppy contracting a disease due to responsible early socialization is compared to the risk factor of a dog being euthanized due to behavior problems, the benefits far outweigh the risks.
A great place to start socializing puppies is in a well-run and organized puppy class. Homes of relatives and friends whose dogs are demonstrably healthy, vaccinated, and friendly, may also be a good
place to start. The best puppy classes combine training interludes with short off leash play sessions. A class that includes some controlled off-leash play, allows the puppies to teach each other bite inhibition and gain vital socialization skills while owners practice and learn to control their puppy.
Ensure your puppy class is taught by a certified professional that does not use any methods that force, startle, scare, or hurt puppies. Puppy Schools should have established intake protocols that includes verifying vaccines are up to date and checking for visible symptoms of coughing, sneezing, or discharge from the eyes or nose, or unusual lethargy. All facilities that cater to puppies and dogs of any age should have established rigorous cleaning and sanitizing protocols. Avoid places that are commonly used by unknown dogs, especially big box stores and dog parks.

Discover our innovative home backup power solutions, designed as an alternative to “conventional standby generators”. Our offerings provide reliable backup power without the need for costly “conventional standby generators” or solar systems, and are ideal choices when outdoor space limitations prevent the installation of a “conventional standby generator”.
Our backup solutions include the Bronco Hybrid System and the Interlock Transfer System.
With the Bronco Hybrid System, each time
there is a power outage, the system’s battery automatically supplies power to your essential home needs. In Houston, most power outages are caused by minor issues and are typically resolved quickly, lasting only minutes to a few hours. Unlike conventional standby generators, which may activate unnecessarily, our system operates efficiently during these brief interruptions.
While major storms, such as hurricanes, are infrequent, they can lead to prolonged outages lasting several hours or even days. During such events, the Bronco Hybrid System’s tri-fuel portable generator, equipped with interlock transfer installation and a quick connect natural gas installation, allows you to charge the battery, power essential circuits, and supply electricity to most of your electrical systems, including central air conditioning, gas furnaces, and pool equipment. This tri-fuel portable generator offers an enhanced energy solution for your home when prolonged power outages exist.
With an Interlock Transfer System, we offer the installation of a portable tri-fuel generator, designed to provide reliable electricity for most of your electrical systems, including air
experience tailored to your specific needs.

When to appeal your property tax value?
Homeowners often wonder when the right time is to appeal your property tax value.
I recently purchased a home, and the appraised value is more than what I bought it for. My neighbor has a larger and newer house than I do but their appraised value is less than mine. In the past year my home has experienced damage due to environmental factors. My house is not worth the appraised value set by the County.

We’ve all been witness to a baby as he or she becomes ambulatory. Think about the key benchmarks that are talked about. “She can hold her head up now,” morphs into “she turned over today,” which quickly becomes “she’s crawling.” And then comes the big one, “she took her first step today!”
As we age however, aches and pains or injuries or illness cause us to move less and less, which leads to loss of flexibility and strength and influences our ability to feel confident when moving through activities of daily life.
Let’s break down the example of the baby. When a baby is learning to move, he or she is not exercising, but rather learning to use the body as a unit to accomplish a specific task. In short, they are developing their proprioception, or the unconscious awareness of the body’s position in space.
Traditional exercise, especially as it applies to increasing strength, involves applying resistance to movement to ask the muscles to get stronger. If we’ve lost much of our natural
ability to move about easily, then as we begin to increase the load on the body, the possibility of injury increases.
If you’ve been inactive for a while, do this quick self-assessment and see how you do.
1) Can you sit on a low chair without bracing with your hands and then stand up without pushing off?
2) Can you get on the floor and get back up without pulling on a stationary object?
3) Can you get on your hands and knees, slightly lift your knees off the floor and crawl forward and backward?
Look at the photos for a demonstration. If this is too difficult, then simply practice the baby crawl and work on balancing on opposite hand/knee while the other hand and knee are off the floor.
These tests can reveal a great deal about your proprioception and hence, your movement ability. The more comfortable you can become with your body as it moves through space, the more productive any kind of formal exercise program will be.

Spring is in the air, the days are starting to get long, and this is the time to take a ride out and enjoy the best season Texas has to offer! What better adventure than to head along U.S. 290 to the town of Chappell Hill, Texas. As you cross the Brazos River, your whole demeanor changes and you
know you are away from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life for a few hours.
The Bluebonnet House & Garden Center has offered many visitors the opportunity to stroll through their gardens, unusual plants, great yard art, lovely bluebonnet glass items, and handmade ceramics to brighten your home.
The BBH will be offering great garden education programs a couple of times each month through June. Lots of new items will be continual throughout the spring and into summer, with surprise plants being offered. You will find unusual succulents that are great in our part of Texas. Fun vines that bloom throughout the year, along with trailing plants that fill your flowerbed with color.
Enjoy the shop owner, Dale, giving you suggestions and advice on the do’s and don’ts of many plants that are available. Also, she is very talented on advice to add yard art and the many different usages for one piece or several styles. Come find
affordable trellis, arbors and metals that will help your vines stand tall while blooming in the Texas sunlight. Another fun thought is planting a “night garden” where you can sit in the evening and watch the evening creatures flying around and spreading pollen as they go from plant to plant all while listening to them singing their songs. Every yard needs a “night garden”!
So, take a drive down U.S. 290, go to the first red light out of Houston, (yes, we are the first red light) and turn right to the historical town of Chappell Hill, enjoy some lunch, and walking around the “small town with a big heart” part of Texas. See you soon!

A – Asymmetry
Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, and early detection is critical for successful treatment. Dermatologists use a simple yet effective system to evaluate suspicious moles or skin lesions—the ABCDE rule. This guideline helps identify warning signs that may indicate melanoma or other concerning skin conditions.
A healthy mole is typically symmetrical, meaning if you were to draw a line through the middle, both halves would look the same. Asymmetry suggests that the cells are growing in an irregular and uncontrolled manner.
B – Border
The border of a benign mole is usually smooth and well-defined. In contrast, melanomas often have irregular, ragged, or blurred edges. If a mole’s borders appear uneven, spreading, or notched, it’s time to have it checked by a dermatologist.
C – Color
Normal moles tend to be uniform in color, usually brown or tan. A mole that has multiple shades can be a warning sign of melanoma. Variations in color may indicate abnormal cell growth and should be evaluated.
D – Diameter
Most benign moles are small (about the size of a pencil eraser). Moles or lesions larger than this size, especially if they are growing, warrant medical attention. However, melanomas can be smaller, so all suspicious changes should be examined.
E – Evolving
One of the most critical factors in identifying potential skin cancer is change over time. If a mole or spot on the skin evolves in size, shape, color, texture, or symptoms, it could indicate a problem. Regular self-exams and professional skin checks are crucial for catching abnormalities early.
The ABCDE rule is a helpful tool, but it does not replace a professional dermatologic evaluation. Dermatologists use advanced techniques, such as dermoscopy and biopsy, to confirm whether a lesion is benign or cancerous.
The ABCDE rule is an easy yet powerful way to identify suspicious moles and detect melanoma early. By seeking timely dermatologic care, you can protect yourself from the dangers of skin cancer. If you notice any changes in your skin, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment—early detection can save lives.

Lawyers often cite various accomplishments, awards and even “expertise” on their websites and advertisements. However, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization was established by the Supreme Court of Texas as the only governing board authorized to certify attorneys in legal specialty areas.
Board certification is a mark of excellence and a distinguishing accomplishment. There are more than 100,000 lawyers licensed to practice law in Texas. Only 7,400 of these have earned the right to be publicly recognized as Board Certified specialists in one of 24 select areas of law, including personal injury trial law. Board certified lawyers earn the right to publicly represent themselves as a specialist in their select area of law. They are the only attorneys allowed to do so by the State Bar of Texas. Many buyers—and even some seasoned agents—assume that qualifying for a mortgage is out of reach for anyone without perfect credit, a sizable down payment, or a spotless financial history. These misconceptions can stop someone from pursuing homeownership altogether. At Texas Loan Star, we’ve helped countless clients break through these myths, and we want to share some clarity that could change the way you think about the mortgage process.
Myth: My credit score isn’t high enough to buy a home.
While a strong credit score certainly helps, it’s not the end-all-be-all of mortgage approval. Did you know that some loan programs accept scores as low as 600? Even if your score isn’t where you’d like it to be, lenders often con-
sider the bigger picture—such as your income, assets, and debt-to-income ratio. Plus, we can guide you on ways to improve your score to open up even more options.
Myth: I need to have my student loans paid off first.
This is a common concern, especially for firsttime buyers. The good news? Student loans don’t have to be a deal-breaker. Lenders look at your monthly payments as part of your debt-to-income ratio, not the total amount owed. Depending on your loan terms, these payments may not significantly impact your ability to qualify.
Pain Point: Saving for a Down Payment Feels Impossible.
With rising costs, saving 20% can feel like an uphill battle. The reality is that many buyers can secure a home with much smaller down payments—3% or 5% in many cases. Additionally, there are down payment assistance programs available in the Houston area that might be a perfect fit.
Homeownership might feel out of reach, but it doesn’t have to be. At Texas Loan Star, we specialize in finding creative solutions for buyers in all financial situations. Let us help you or your clients navigate these challenges and move closer to that “sold” sign.

Spring is typically a busy season for real estate. As a Realtor and Houston Heights resident, I closely monitor our local housing trends using data from HAR.com. Now that we’re rounding out the first month of 2025, it’s
the perfect time to share an update on where the Houston Heights market stands.
Compared to 2023, home prices last year saw moderate increases. In 2024, the average home price in our neighborhood rose by 2.7% compared to 2023. While this may seem modest, it’s a clear sign that our market has remained resilient in the face of higher interest rates and inflationary pressures. The average price per square foot increased by 4%, indicating that buyers are still prioritizing larger homes and more space.
This growth, though moderate, highlights that demand for homes in our community is stable and that our area continues to be an attractive destination for buyers. Unlike some other regions where prices have fluctuated wildly, our local market has maintained a steady upward trajectory.
Early numbers for January 2025 show that the market is already off to a strong start. Demand remains high, and the early signs suggest that
this year may outpace 2024. While it’s still early, the jump in activity is a promising sign that the housing market will continue to thrive, at least in the short term. With interest rates stabilizing and continued high interest in our area, 2025 may bring more opportunities for both buyers and sellers.
As we move more into 2025, it’s clear that the local real estate market is in a strong position. Stay tuned for more updates — things are already

In many ways our Heights Pediatric Dentists and our team are superheroes! We pride ourselves on being able to work with even the most apprehensive about dentistry kiddos. However, sometimes due to young age, severe anxiety, or perhaps a condition such as mental or physical disability, even the best pediatric dentist cannot enlist the cooperation of their patient. That’s when we take out our “bag of tricks”, which can sometimes include a variety of sedation options. For “in-office” sedations we only see healthy children that do not require hospital grade medical care or equipment.
To guide you, below are sedation treatments we offer to our patients.
1. Inhalation Sedation – A gas called Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) is breathed in through the nose. The effect is mild so it is best for patients with little anxiety and for those who will undergo simple dental procedures. Nitrous oxide is out of the patient’s system as soon as it is turned off and he or she can resume daily routine such as going back to school.
2. Oral Conscious Sedation – Oral medications are administered by the doctor an hour prior to treatment in our office. The patient will feel sleepy and relaxed but will be awake enough throughout the session to be able to respond to the dentist. The effects last for about 8 hours so patients cannot go back to school that day.
3. Intravenous or IV Sedation – For this treatment we bring in an anesthesiologist to our office who will administer sedative medications through an IV. The patient will be sleeping, so complicated and extensive treatment can be done all at once, and the
patient does not feel or remember the procedure.
Parents are a crucial part in determining their child’s ability to withstand dental treatment and we engage in active discussion with them to determine the right choice. The child’s age, level of anxiety, health history, and the amount of dental treatment should all be considered before scheduling the appointment. We know that each child and situation is unique and that is exactly why we have many choices of sedation in our office. Our doctors are highly trained and take multiple continuing education and certification classes to ensure the best possible options for our wonderful patients.
Give us a call if you would like to know more about our office, the treatments we offer, or sedation choices.

Technology and art do not always seem to sync (like that pun?) in one’s mind. Artists have been using tricks and shortcuts to improve their art technique, probably since we were painting cave walls.
Today, the arsenal of tools available is vast and a great assist for today’s independent artist. From concept to marketing, today’s artist has options.
Gaston Carrio, an architect and awardwinning painter and metal sculptor, is wellversed in today’s technologies. His abstract paintings easily adorn today’s homes or towering office atriums.
“I devote more than 50% of my time to researching, studying, and implementing technology that interests me,” Gaston said. “I then look to apply these technologies in the business aspect or entrepreneurial approach within my art world. I have loved technology since I was very young. When I tried to use CAD during my second year of architecture school, it was not allowed. I had to wait another two years before I could finally use it for my projects; by then, the university recognized that CAD was a technology that was here to stay and finally accepted it. This was in Argentina.”
artist Fatima Khambati obsesses over Canva, an online graphics platform for content creators.
“As an artist, it’s been a game-changer in my creative process,” Fatima said. “I use it to remove backgrounds, create beautiful greeting cards, and design mockups that show clients exactly how their new art will look on their wall.”
Fatima also uses Canva for creating social media reels and posts, to design signs, logos, and portfolios that help her establish her brand and showcase her work, which all looks very professional.
“Canva is always my trusted sidekick. It’s truly become an extension of my creative self,” Fatima said.
Don’t discount tablets; they are the powerhouse it seems for today’s artist. Fatima and many artists I spoke with use artist software like Procreate to both create original art, proposals, and to touch up work before printing.
Caroline Truong, founder of The Painter’s House, uses Procreate on her iPad Pro for numerous tasks including mural planning, sketching, drawing, mock-ups, scaling her art, and creating digital art designs.
Heights artist Carolyn Coates finds technology to be a very beneficial tool for artwork, particularly for larger outdoor murals. “I paint a generic rough draft as a backdrop, take a photo, then sketch ideas on my tablet for fun. I used to use sketchbooks and graph paper; however, my tablet is fantastic because I can draw, redraw, and finalize a mural quickly before painting the building.”
coloring the black and white version and then photographing it for client review.
As technology advances, I suspect artists will find ways to use these tools to improve their work, but originality will always rule, even if the paintbrush is digitized.

For some artists, the tried-and-true methods are hard to shake. Painter and muralist Ron Gordon combines traditional methods with digital tools for sketch preparation. He resizes and converts online photos to black and white, prints them, then cuts and pastes onto frosted acetate for a translucent effect. Ron draws or cuts additional elements from black and gray paper. Ron finalizes the piece by

Gardening: A word that evokes various images for each of us. It may be a yard full of flowers, elevated boxes for vegetables and fruits, such as berries, or just enough to grow a few herbs for our kitchen. For most of us living in the Heights and surrounding areas, we do not have enough land to provide the amount of veggies we need to sustain life, only enough to provide a nice addition to our family meals. During the winter, we have provided ourselves with lettuces, spinach and arugula for salads, and even cauliflower and broccoli; until the first good freeze takes some out. Gardening can provide you with a better outdoor environment, flowers for your home, or food for your table. It can also provide physical and mental benefits and the opportunity to connect with nature. This can result in stress and anxiety reduction, improvements in mood, and a feeling of wellbeing. Gardening with others can also foster a sense of community, often used in addiction recovery.
For the uninitiated, YouTube.com is a great resource for your many endeavors. I have saved an estimated two thousand dollars in the last 3 years making repairs on my truck, including a complete dashboard replacement, per instructions from YouTube. I also made the mistake of telling my wife she could find gardening videos on YouTube.com and our house has never been the same.
“One day my husband was headed out to the store and I asked if I could watch gardening on YouTube. I had never even thought about it before. He looked at me like I was crazy, but showed me how to search. It was so simple and WOW my life changed forever! So, for gardeners who are uninitiated, we will cover some of our favorites and will recommend based on their usefulness, as well as those who we think are sufficiently entertaining in their presentation.”
One of the first things you should know is your USDA Hardiness Zones. In Houston, it is 9a and 8b. The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into 11 planting zones with each zone being 10°F warmer or colder in the winter than the zone next to it. This is for temperature only, as much of California is in the same zones, with much different climates. Nursery plants will often indicate the zones they will thrive in. Many of these YouTube channels will be in different zones. So yes, many of the trees, shrubs and flowers shown in these videos may not be available here in our area, but what you will find is there are a multitude of ideas, including design, DIY projects, propagation, inspiration, different garden styles, native plants, succulents, roses, etc, you can incorporate into your own garden. And not to mention, the videos are fun to watch too.

Garden Answer (zone 7a)
The current “Queen of the YouTube Gardening World” would have to be Laura LeBoutillier and her husband Aaron. I hear this woman’s voice in my house 5 days a week with an approximate one hour “wrap-up” she does on Sunday, where she answers viewers emails. My wife is convinced that Laura is a personal friend.
Speaking from the perspective of someone who is not particularly interested in gardening, I will admit that her delivery, and the information she presents, has a very personable feel to it. It’s easy to see why she’s at the top of this game.
She is the apex gardener, having moved into a home at the edge of a planned community. They have bought several lots of attached land, currently with
14 acres, all of which is there to do whatever her imagination can fathom. Located in Ontario, Oregon, Laura started her channel in 2014. They grow nothing to sell (though they give food and flowers away), and each of their projects (new flower beds, greenhouse, a huge Dream Stream pond, hardscape, all manner of trees and the list goes on) are covered in detail, up to their completion. Even the husband is a pleasant fellow, with two adorable kids that are in videos once and awhile.
