It’s believed that next to teeth, the eyebrows are the most important features on any face. Eyebrow trends come and go, from thin and sharp to bold and bushy à la Cara Delevingne and basically every other model who’s been hot in the past few years.
But the latest trend we can’t get enough of is microblading, a new tattoo technique that fills brows out or reshapes them by drawing on tiny lines that look like individual hairs. We know what you’re thinking: tattooed eyebrows? No way. But hear us out. Microblading leaves brows looking natural and takes years off of your face! It sounds terrifying, and there’s this stigma of grandma’s blue arch eyebrows, but these are completely different.
Microblading is done with a handheld tool made out of needles that puts pigment into the skin, but doesn’t go as deep as a normal tattoo would.
It’s also semi-permanent. Your micro bladedd microbladed brows should last between two and three years.
going to Bikram yoga, swimming or simply just waking up in the morning with fabulous brows! Now it’s possible with microblading at

e’re wrapping up some great projects this year – The Shepherd restoration project is underway with fresh mosaics all throughout Shepherd between Westheimer and 59, you know, where the terrible construction has been underway for the last couple years… We’re part of that too, but don’t blame the tile guys.
We wrapped up some Pillar work with the Norhill Association, having prepped and coated the existing pillars, and recolored the street names and blocks. If you’ve been through Norhill lately, I’m sure you’ve seen them.
Between the 1920’s and the 1950’s, Houston used blue and white, unglazed mosaic tiles inlaid in curbs to indicate addresses and street names. As Houston grows and continues to rebuild, these pieces of history are quickly disappearing. Curb Appeal Blues is working with the Blue Tile Project to bring back the Blue Tile as a symbol of Houston’s support of Historic Preservation, local business, and the arts. These are a great permanent replacement for the painted address numbers on your curb!

Probating a will is critical in accessing insurance funds for necessary repairs after a disaster. Here’s how the probate process helps in this regard:
1. Legal Ownership: Probating a will establishes legal ownership of the deceased person’s assets, including your home. When a disaster such as a hurricane damages your property, the insurance company typically requires proof of ownership to release insurance funds. By probating the will, you provide the necessary documentation to demonstrate your legal entitlement to the property and the associated insurance coverage.
2. Executor’s Authority: Probate appoints an executor, who is responsible for managing the deceased person’s estate and ensuring that the wishes outlined in the will are carried out. The executor has the authority to handle legal and financial matters, including dealing with insurance companies. Having a probated will grants the executor the legal authority to negotiate with the insurance company, file claims, and cash insurance checks on behalf of the estate.
be questioned or subject to family members’ disputes. Probating the will settles any title issues and establishes a clear legal framework for distributing insurance funds. This process helps avoid delays and potential conflicts that may arise when multiple parties claim ownership of the property or dispute the distribution of insurance proceeds.
4. Meeting Insurance Requirements: Insurance policies often have specific requirements regarding the documentation needed to file a claim. Probating a will provides the necessary legal documentation, such as the death certificate, probate court orders, and letters of testamentary, which insurance companies often require to process claims. By fulfilling these requirements, probate facilitates a smoother and more efficient claims process, allowing you to access the insurance funds promptly.
5. Protecting Against Fraud: Probate safeguards against potential fraudulent claims. The probate process involves verifying the will’s authenticity and confirming the beneficiaries’ identities, reducing the risk of fraudulent activities and protecting the rightful beneficiaries’ interests.
In summary, probating a will helps access insurance funds for necessary repairs after a disaster by establishing legal ownership, giving the executor the authority to handle insurance matters, resolving title issues, meeting insurance requirements, and protecting against fraud. Going through the probate process ensures a smoother and more efficient process of accessing the insurance funds needed to repair your damaged property.
Each time there is a significant weather event causing property damage, I get calls from someone with an insurance claim check in their name and the name of a deceased loved one. Take action so this does not happen to you.

Window coverings are an important part of finishing the look and safety of your home! This is important to me as they are more than just decorative elements in a home or office. They play a crucial role in enhancing safety, improving energy efficiency, and adding aesthetic value. This article delves into the multifaceted benefits of window coverings and why they are essential in any space.
Child Safety
One of the primary safety concerns in homes with young children is the risk posed by window cords. Traditional blinds and shades with long, dangling cords can be hazardous, posing strangulation risks. Modern window coverings now offer cordless options or those with inaccessible cords, significantly reducing these dangers. Effective June 1, 2024, all window covering products sold in the United States must be cordless or have inaccessible cords or approved tensioning devices. Additionally, motorized blinds can be controlled remotely, eliminating the need for any cords altogether.
Security
Window coverings also contribute to home security. By obstructing the view into a home, they prevent potential intruders from assessing the interior and any valuables. Some window coverings, like heavy drapes or blackout shades, offer an additional layer of privacy, ensuring that passersby cannot see inside even when the lights are on.
UV Protection
Prolonged exposure to sunlight can damage furniture, flooring, and even artwork. Window coverings with UV protection help block harmful rays, preserving the integrity and appearance of interior décor including furniture and floors. This not only maintains the beauty of a home but also extends the lifespan of its contents.
Windows are a significant source of heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. Proper window coverings act as an insulating
barrier, helping to maintain a consistent indoor temperature. In the winter, heavy drapes or cellular shades can trap cold air near the window, keeping the room warmer. In the summer, reflective blinds or solar shades can deflect sunlight, reducing the need for air conditioning.
By improving insulation, window coverings can lead to substantial energy savings.
Reduced reliance on heating and cooling systems lowers energy consumption, leading to lower utility bills and a smaller carbon footprint. This is especially important in an era where energy efficiency and sustainability are becoming increasingly vital. They Make your Space Look Better
Window coverings come in a myriad of styles, colors, and materials, allowing homeowners to express their personal style and complement their interior design. From sleek, modern blinds to luxurious, opulent drapes, the right window coverings can enhance the overall aesthetic of a room, making it feel more cohesive and inviting.
With the wide range of options available, window coverings can be tailored to suit any design preference or functional need. Roman shades, plantation shutters, roller blinds, and sheer curtains are just a few examples of the versatile choices available. Each type offers unique benefits and can be selected to match the decor and requirements of different rooms.

How it works:
The REME HALO® in-duct air purifier utilizes RGF’s proprietary Reflective Electro Magnetic Energy technology. Installed into the supply plenum of your existing air conditioning or heating system air ducts, the REME HALO® in-duct air purifier produces HydroPeroxide plasma that is distributed through the air handler, through the duct system and into the conditioned living space.
Unlike passive air technologies, which need pollutants to pass through the unit for purification or filtration, the REME HALO® in-duct air purifier sweeps through your home actively purifying pollutants at the source. In addition, the charged plasma induces particles
to coagulate or stick together making them bigger and easier for your filter to catch. Hydroperoxides occur naturally in the earth’s atmosphere and are part of nature’s process of cleaning the air.
Features & Benefits
• Dual ionizers to reduce airborne particulates (dust, dander, pollen, mold spores)
• Kills up to 99% of bacteria, mold and viruses
• REME® reduces sneeze germs by 99% in the time a sneeze can reach three feet
• New zinc ions kill 99% of viruses on surfaces
• Unlike portable units that are limited to the room in which they are placed, the REME HALO® provides whole home and building
purification
• Easily integrated with your existing HVAC system - The unit doesn’t take away living space and operates silently
• Two (2) quick release features for easy, no tool, cell replacement
• Incorporates an adjustable shroud around the REME® cell, which allows customization of the advanced oxidation plasma output

However, when you look better, you instantly feel better about yourself – It’s a huge confidence booster and you feel better about yourself too. My goal is for you to look like a better version of yourself while still being natural.” She concludes by saying, “You want someone to look at you and speak: ‘you look great!’ rather than saying: ‘what have you done to yourself?’”

Between May 2022 and May 2023, home insurance prices rose an average of 21% at renewal time. A rise in catastrophic severe weather events contributed to this jump and the rate of price increases is not expected to slow. As insurers face higher costs, they pass those along to consumers in the form of pricier premiums. However, insurers don’t share data on individual homeowners’ premiums and risks, so it’s difficult to calculate just how climate risk is factored into the price of policies.
The 30-year fixed rate mortgage declined to 6.78% on July 25, down from the 7.22% high on May 2, according to Freddie Mac data. The first-rate cut is almost entirely priced into financial markets already, especially bond markets. If borrowing costs for home loans come down, there’s a chance more buyers will jump in the market. And if demand outpaces supply, prices might go up even more. (CNBC)
Banks and other lenders are seizing control of distressed commercial properties at the highest rate in nearly a decade, a sign that the sector’s punishing downturn is entering its next phase and approaching a bottom. In the
second quarter, portfolios of foreclosed and seized office buildings, apartments and other commercial property reached $20.5 billion, a 13% increase from the first quarter and the highest quarterly figure since 2015. (They were over $46 billion in 2012) (WSJ)
Can your home withstand a hurricane? Some are built like bunkers and can. While that may be expensive to build, some homes built this way are foregoing hurricane insurance which can be extremely expensive. (BLOOMBERG)
Is the FED watching? McDonald’s sales dropped for the first time since 2020 in the midst of the COVID surge... certainly a bold indicator of consumer spending slowing and seeking out ‘better buys’ as Covid savings dry up... McDonald’s has been raising prices quite dramatically since 2019... over 100%... double than its largest competitors Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, In-N-Out Burger, Burger King, and Jack in the Box. Yes. When we check your system, we look for components that are weak or in the process of failing. Left without checking, these could lead to more problems and repair costs. Maintaining your system will make it last longer, operate more efficiently and cost less in the long run and give you a better quality of home comfort and quality of life.
Flushing your primary drain is something we do every time we perform a cooling or heating check. This helps keep your drains working properly and may lead to not having a clogged drain in your primary drain line.
Don’t get caught without your A/C this summer. Give us a call to check your system and we will advise if anything is needed.

“When customers ask how I got started in the furniture business, I tell them selling furniture is in my blood. My grandparents John & Elinor Campbell cornered the furniture market in Denver for over 50 years. As a young child, I would stand on a milk crate behind the counter and help my grandfather’s customers. Even though business brought my dad to Houston in 1985, I went home every summer and helped run The Red Barn Furniture, Inc. What amazed me was the great friendships that my grandfather had with his customers. Everyone knew him by name and he knew everyone’s story. I feel this is one of the characteristics that I have carried over into my own company.
In 1991, I opened up my own furniture store in a small building in the Montrose area located off of West Alabama Street in the old Pasternak’s grocery store. Named after the street, Alabama Furniture opened its doors with a mere 1,200 sq ft. I found a great niche in the Montrose community. I soon grew out of the smaller Montrose location and into the heart of the Heights in 1996. In 2000, I
married the man of my dreams, Rion Enroth, who retired from the Oil & Gas industry to join me at Alabama Furniture.
After 20 years in the Heights, we discovered our current location at 4900 N. Shepherd Drive in Houston. This location has opened up a new venture for us and the loyal Alabamians who have followed Alabama Furniture for the last 33 years. We are now shipping to customers all over the United States. I graduated from the Texas Auction Academy and hope to add estate auctions in the near future. I love what I do! Every day is like Christmas. Thank you to all of our dedicated employees and Consignors both past and present that have made Alabama Furniture an awesome place! If you are looking for a great place to work, come and join our team!
We want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support. In celebration of 33 years, we will have extra special pricing! Come and check us out and visit us at our website alabamafurniture.com.

We have literally spent a lot of time trying to help people deal with the damage to their power systems during the last two storms, which hit our city and neighborhood, starting with the derecho in May and hopefully ending with Hurricane Beryl in July, as I’m writing this article before the storm season is over.
The most effective protection I can recommend to prevent damage caused by the massive power surges we experienced with back-to-back storms this season is to help you understand surges and what you can do to protect your home or business.
What is a surge? “A power surge is a brief overvoltage event that can damage electrical devices and is a common cause for failure of electrical equipment.”
The following information, published by the Electrical Safety Foundation is the best comprehensive information that I could find. Courtesy of the Electrical Safety Foundation – Check out link for additional information. www.esfi.org/surge-protective-devices/
Surges can damage and reduce the lifespan of:
Heating and Air Conditioning Systems ● Washers and Dryers ● Water Heaters ● Ranges & Refrigerators ● Lighting ● Entertainment Systems
It is estimated that 80% of surges are caused by internal sources.
Internal Sources:
Large appliances turning on / off ● Faulty wiring or loose connections ● Overloaded circuits, short circuits, or ground faults ● Power recovery
External Sources:
Lightning ● Damage to power lines ● Utility power grid switching
All new and renovated homes are required to be protected by Listed and Approved Type 1 or Type 2 Surge Protective Devices.
Type 1: Permanently connected Surge Protective Device. Protects against external and internal surges. May be installed inside or outside the home.
Type 2: Permanently connected Surge Protective Device installed in, or next to, breaker box. Protects again internal or external surges.
Type 3: Extra protection. Point-of-use Surge Protective Device. Must be used in conjunction with Type 1 or Type 2 SPD to meet 2020 code requirements.
Use Type 1, 2, and 3 SPDs for the best level of protection.
That being said, you have to make the decision of how little or how much you are willing to do. In our area and because we are subject to frequent storms and power loss, we recommend whole house surge protection, simply because of the number of electronics, appliances, and electrical devices that we all have in our homes. We have surges on a daily basis that can weaken electrical components. The National Electrical Code now requires minimal surge protection in new and renovated homes. Above are the different levels of surge protection.
If you don’t already have surge protection on your home or business, we have a preferred product made in America that we recommend. The higher the amperage, the better the protection. Call Harmony Electric Co., Inc. for more information.

bring your vision to life, through our design experience.
by Gerald Melancon
About 20 years ago, my neighbor, a gentleman from Germany, and I were standing outside during a power outage. He pointed to the power lines and transformers located on our poles and he told me the only place he had seen power transmitted like this was East Germany, before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
2024 has been a costly, deadly, and for many, a miserable experience for Houstonians. Moving to Houston to go to U of H in 1973, and after moving into The Heights in 1985, I cannot remember a period of destruction that hasn’t already taken place this year. And the year ain’t over.
Many of us, including myself, have looked at the damage and flooding inflicted on others and quietly muttered to ourselves, “glad that didn’t happen to me”. On a personal note, it was our turn. A large pecan tree toppled from one side of our property, across our driveway and onto our home. It could have ripped off the front of our house if it had not gotten caught on one of its own forks, onto another tree. This kept two large trunks from coming through the front of our home.
Beginning on May 16, the “derecho” cut power to almost a million homes and businesses in the Greater Houston area. It is assumed that electrical restoration was relatively quick because of the narrow, limited impact of that storm. Another “no-name” storm hit us again on May 28, again knocking out power, as it toppled trees and broke branches. This culminated (we hope) with Beryl, on July 8, 2024.
Since Beryl, most of my encounters with folks eventually gets around to some type of home generator/standby electrical system. Most folks gravitate towards the standby, natural gas powered, internal combustion, the most visible example being a Generac type system.
However, with a little research, you can find various alternatives with a wide range of differences in the eventual cost. But even if your armed with all of the costs, you still have a few important factors you must consider.
First, you probably need to estimate the amount of power your home will need. Although this is no definitive list and other factors may need to be considered, the following may help you assess your needs. You can do this by adding the power needs of your essential systems to arrive at the amount of continuous running watts, and reserve surge watts as each of these systems cycle on and off.
In general, a mini refrigerator uses between 70-90 watts and 280-360 starting watts; an average household refrigerator uses between 200-300 watts and 800-1200 starting watts; a side-by-side refrigerator uses 250-400 watts and 1000-2000 starting watts.
Once you know the AC’s tonnage, you can calculate its wattage. 1 ton = 3,500 watts, so if you have a 2 ton unit, the wattage is 7,000 (2 x 3,500 = 7,000). This calculation measures the starting watts of your AC unit, which is the number of watts your AC unit needs to start up (always more than running watts). You can get almost all of these values from the appliance specifications in your home. Some typical examples are listed below:
Appliance Running Watts Starting Watts
Dryer
Coffee
Window A/C 1000 1800
Dishwasher 1300 1800
The easiest, yet not so powerful solution is to get a battery back up of some kind. Brands
such as Jackery and EcoFlow are basically battery storage systems, with most having either a solar panel and some, a small gasoline powered engine for outdoor use only. The smaller of these will output anywhere from 200-400 watts of continuous power, and with the larger units capable of up to 1,000 watts of power delivery. The latter which would run your refrigerator, a fan and maybe little else. You can piggyback these units to increase your capacity, but it can get pricey. A 3.6kWh unit is approximately $3,000. With multiple units, you can expand this system to 25kWh watts but, as you can see, this could get pricey.
Up from the battery systems would be portable gasoline powered generators. Here, we are referring to those portable, wheeled units with an onboard gas tank, usually holding anywhere from 5 to 6.5 gallons. My 5,000 watt unit, with a full tank of gas at 5.5 gallons will run for about 8 full hours. This still requires approximately 15 gallons of gasoline for a full day of run time. However, with a unit this size, you can now run a window air conditioner. For reference, a 10,000 btu window unit would have a running wattage around 1,000, 3000 watts at start up.
What I consider the interim step between what is described above, and the true whole house generators are the large format portable
generators. These units are much the same as my portable generator, just bigger. Most start above 10,000 watts up to 20,000 and above for the larger units. Many of these are dual (gasoline/propane) or even tri-fuel, accepting natural gas. Units of this size can be directly wired to your home, using a manual transfer switch. Unlike an automatic (Generac type) system, where the unit detects to outage and switches to standby power, you will have to hook up the unit and switch to generator power.
A transfer switch allows you to choose whether the grid or your generator is to supply your power. A typical, non-complicated installation of the switch will cost from $1,000 and up. These large, portable generators start from $1,500 for 10,000 watt units up
to $3,500-4,000 for units up to 20,000 watts. This seems a much more affordable option to the permanently installed standby unit. The challenge, if you are not running it off the natural gas supplied to your home, you have to supply an alternative.
Gasoline is the easy and obvious solution, but propane, if it is available, can be handy. A 50lb tank of propane should keep your unit running for at least 24
hours. And if you run out of propane, you can always switch to gasoline, giving you some flexibility based on fuel availability. However, a tri-fuel unit, where you may use the natural gas supplied to your home would be most convenient.
The next step up would be a permanently installed, natural gas, standby unit, with such brands as Koehler and Generac. These units are there in case you lose power, switching over to provide power, within seconds of an outage. Dependent on size and brand, you can expect to pay at least 12 to 15 thousand dollars installed.
Either brand requires yearly maintenance, which can cost between $350 and $750 per year, assuming no special repairs are required. Oil and filter changes are recommended after each 100 hours (4 days) of operation. Generac lists 29 items to be checked and maintained each year, including the checks on the transfer switch. An extended 10 year warranty will cost an additional $1,395 at the time of your purchase.
$31,615. There would be a vendor discount of $770 and a federal tax credit of 30%, making our final cost $21,591. Unfortunately though, this would not supply all the power I would need on a day-to-day basis. By their calculations, I currently pay $316 per month on average for electricity. This system would lower that bill by about $85.00 per month to $231 on average. Full pay back on this system would take about 21 years, by my calculations.
At my age, I not sure I will be able see that day. However, if you can get past the cost and are able to install enough panels to meet more of your daily needs, solar panels, combined with enough storage batteries, is the easiest option. It does not require the maintenance of
an internal combustion engine and, as long as you can get adequate sunshine, it is a fumeless and a silent system.
At the top of the cost and benefits pyramid, may be the installation of solar panels and batteries. The system quoted to us earlier this year for our 2,400 sq. ft bungalow with 2 air conditioner units - one 2 ton and one 4 ton - including the installation of solar panels on the roof and battery backup, that we were assured would be able to operate our 2 ton a/c and other appliances, 13 panels and a Tesla Powerwall 3 for a starting list price of
It does not escape me that using these internal combustion power generators contribute to the very climate change that brings us the stronger storms, which in turn wrecks my power grid. Therefore, a solar powered system not only seems the easiest to own, but the most responsible to our environment. But if we as a society do not want to keep doing this over and over, we need to update our power grid.
Emulating other modern countries, burying our lines underground to make them less vulnerable to storms. Houston is the city with the most number of billion dollar disasters.
Storms, floods, and now derechos will continue to plague our area. It is time we join the rest of the industrial world and begin to transition to a more modern grid.
While we can do our best to protect our properties, sometimes forces beyond our control, such as unpredictable natural disasters, can cause significant damage. This summer, we experienced the impacts of both a no-notice derecho storm and Hurricane Beryl, which brought widespread power outages and fallen trees, disrupting businesses and damaging property. These severe weather events postponed much of our everyday lives, including real estate transactions.
In Houston, the housing market paused as homeowners and sellers focused on repairing roofs and cleaning up after the storms. As a result, inspections and closings were delayed. The situation is further complicated
by a reduction in the number of insurance companies willing to operate in high-risk areas like flood-prone Houston. Those that remain in business have increased premiums, dropped clients, or tripled their rates. These factors, along with higher interest rates, have made buying a home more challenging than ever. Despite these setbacks, there is still a strong demand for housing in Houston.
Houston is a resilient city, and recovery is expected to be swift. In response to the challenges posed by natural disasters, new homes are being built with a focus on elevation and sturdiness to withstand future events.
While things may appear grim, don’t let these
tribulations discourage you from entering the housing market. Waiting for interest rates to drop can lead to increased competition and higher prices later. Houston Heights, for example, continues to see strong sales.
Each Houston neighborhood has its own attributes, making it all the more important to have a trained, professional realtor on your side. Someone knowledgeable about the market and who is up-to-date with the ins and outs of the ever-changing market and can provide valuable guidance when navigating today’s housing landscape.
If you have real estate questions or need a resource, I would be happy to help. My goal is to make the home selling or buying process as stress-free for you as possible. Reach out by phone or e-mail if you’re considering making a real estate move this year.

Lawyers often cite various accomplishments, awards and even “expertise” on their websites and advertisements. However, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization was established by the Supreme Court of
Texas as the only governing board authorized to certify attorneys in legal specialty areas.
Board certification is a mark of excellence and a distinguishing accomplishment. There are more than 100,000 lawyers licensed to practice law in Texas. Only 7,400 of these have earned the right to be publicly recognized as Board Certified specialists in one of 24 select areas of law, including personal injury trial law. Board certified lawyers earn the right to publicly represent themselves as a specialist in their select area of law. They are the only attorneys allowed to do so by the State Bar of Texas. This designation sets them apart as being an attorney with the highest public commitment to excellence in their area of law.
I have been Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 2008. I am one of only 1,704 Texas attorneys that hold this specialized certification.
In order to achieve and retain this status, I have had to meet an extensive list of qualifications, including:
• Being licensed to practice law for at least five years (I have been licensed since 1998)
• Devoting a specific percentage of my practice to personal injury law
• Handling a wide variety of matters in personal injury law to demonstrate my experience and involvement in the field
• Regularly attending continuing education seminars in order to remain up to date on the current trends in law
• Evaluation by peers, including fellow lawyers and judges
• Passing a comprehensive 6-hour written examination
• Applying for recertification every five years
• Trying a requisite number of cases to a jury verdict, including personal injury cases
If you would like to speak to a board-certified personal injury trial lawyer, please call me today.

NAN Luxury Auction Concierge aims to provide a unique selling experience by leveraging the power of auctions to attract competitive bids. This approach can often result in higher sale prices, a significant advantage for homeowners in The Heights, where the market for unique, high-value properties is robust.
Nancy Almodovar, CEO & Co-Founder of Nan and Company Properties, shares her excitement about this new venture: “We are thrilled to introduce NAN Luxury Auction Concierge to The Heights. Before embarking on the journey to find your dream home, getting prequalified with a local mortgage lender is a crucial step that can significantly impact your home-buying experience. Prequalification is essentially a preliminary assessment of your financial situation, giving you an estimate of how much you can borrow based on your income, assets, and credit score. This early step helps you establish a clear budget, allowing you to focus on homes that are within your financial reach and avoid wasting time on properties that are out of your price range.
One of the primary benefits of working with a local lender is their in-depth understanding
of the regional real estate market. Local lenders are familiar with the nuances of the area, including property values, neighborhood trends, and local lending regulations. This local expertise enables them to provide more accurate and relevant advice tailored to your specific needs and circumstances.
Moreover, local lenders often have established relationships with local real estate agents and other professionals. This network can be advantageous when you need to make a competitive offer on a property. In a hot market, having a prequalification letter from a local lender can make your offer stand out, demonstrating to sellers that you are a serious and prepared buyer.
Additionally, the process with a local lender is generally more streamlined and personal. You’re likely to receive more responsive and customized service, making the overall experience smoother and less stressful. Heights Dermatology is proud to announce that they are the first dermatology group in Houston, and second in the state, to incorporate the most advanced technology to help the group’s providers detect melanoma earlier, when it is almost 100% curable.
Nevisense is the only FDA-approved device to evaluate atypical moles that are not obvious benign spots or melanomas, guiding more precise biopsy decisions during skin cancer checks. Nevisense is clinically proven to improve diagnosis of early melanoma in atypical moles that are not clearly malignant or benign.
As an innovative practice, Heights Dermatology has a history of providing its patients with state-of-the-art equipment designed to deliver the very best results. Patients value the role of Nevisense to help catch early melanomas in real time during the practice visit. Since they can be stressful, patients trust their providers to be as thorough as possible during skin checks, especially for those who have a history of melanoma and biopsies, or who are at risk for melanoma.
Many patients are afraid of, or are uncomfortable with, the prospect of biopsy, especially if the mole is in an area that is cosmetically sensitive, e.g., chest or face. Heights Dermatology is proud to offer its patients the very best in dermatologic care.
As fall descends on our neighborhood, we are all looking forward to the cooler weather, fall colors, school sports, and the start of the holiday season. Routines creep back into our lives, and everyone settles back into school mode.
Our office also settles down a bit since kids are busy at school. However, we do not slow down as that is exactly the time for us to help out with schools! We spend our fall educating patients, parents, and childcare employees on how to best take care of baby teeth. We usually start with the local daycares where we deliver bags full of dental care information as well as tools helpful for keeping teeth healthy. Our team goes out to the schools for dental care presentations for the kids. We also share our knowledge with our partners in taking care of kids such as pediatricians, teachers, nurses, and other educators on how to spot dental trouble and deal with common dental emergencies. We have multiple resources starting with pamphlets, online videos, and educational materials, and ending with “save a tooth” solutions for our school nurses. We also start discussing and promoting our
CANDY BUY BACK program for Halloween. We collect post Halloween candy in our office, but we also work with local schools on collecting them at their facility and bringing it to us for school donations. We hope to spread information about healthy choices for teeth and overall health.
Many schools have fall festivals and our wonderful neighborhood organizes fantastic fall events as well. You will always see our team participating in these events by sponsoring booths, teaching about dental careers and dental health, as well as setting up
tables with information about dentistry. We truly hope to see you guys there, so please stop by our booth, call us with your school needs, and let us know what your organizations need to be better supported by our community. If your little ones are in local sports, we will be happy to help sponsor those teams. And make sure you call us for school auction donations!
Wishing all our HPDO families a wonderful fall and return of slightly cooler temperatures. As fun as summertime is, it sure is lovely to settle into our normal routines and take a refreshing breath before the holiday season catches us again. At HPDO, fall is our favorite season!
We’ve all been witness to a baby as he or she becomes ambulatory. Think about the key benchmarks that are talked about. “She can hold her head up now,” morphs into “she turned over today,” which quickly becomes “she’s crawling.” And then comes the big one, “she took her first step today!”
As we age however, aches and pains or injuries or illness cause us to move less and less, which leads to loss of flexibility and strength and influences our ability to feel confident when moving through activities of daily life.
Let’s break down the example of the baby. When a baby is learning to move, he or she is not exercising, but rather learning to use the body as a unit to accomplish a specific task. In short, they are developing their proprioception, or the unconscious awareness of the body’s position in space.
Traditional exercise, especially as it applies to increasing strength, involves applying resistance to movement to ask the muscles to get stronger. If we’ve lost much of our natural
ability to move about easily, then as we begin to increase the load on the body, the possibility of injury increases.
If you’ve been inactive for a while, do this quick self-assessment and see how you do.
1) Can you sit on a low chair without bracing with your hands and then stand up without pushing off?
2) Can you get on the floor and get back up without pulling on a stationary object?
3) Can you get on your hands and knees, slightly lift your knees off the floor and crawl forward and backward?
Look at the photos for a demonstration. If this is too difficult, then simply practice the baby crawl and work on balancing on opposite hand/knee while the other hand and knee are off the floor.
These tests can reveal a great deal about your proprioception and hence, your movement ability. The more comfortable you can become with your body as it moves through space, the more productive any kind of formal exercise program will be.

Brookdale The Heights has officially launched their HealthPlus program. The care coordination program, Brookdale HealthPlus, works to help improve residents’ quality of life, and help prevent avoidable emergency room visits or hospitalizations - in partnership with their family and healthcare providers. They have a dedicated RN Care Manager
who proactively helps residents manage their health every day and serves as a partner for other healthcare professionals. Chronic conditions are better managed with a care manager’s attention to evidence-based nursing protocols, and help close gaps in care. They’re an advocate for residents to help manage care transitions, including coordinating communication between providers, reconciling medications and scheduling follow-up visits with physicians.
For Brookdale HealthPlus residents compared to similar individuals living in private homes they saw 78% fewer urgent care visits, 36% fewer hospitalizations, and 63% higher annual wellness visit completion rate. Come for a visit and learn how to live healthier at Brookdale The Heights.
is a tiny town called Chappell Hill, Texas. This little speck on a Texas map might be considered small, but beware, it is known as “small town, big heart”.
In Texas people think of everything as being big, but let us tell you Chappell Hill can hold its own with a lot of “big towns” in this great State.
You are offered an array of things that most “big towns” don’t offer. First peace and quiet, warm smiles, a friendly welcome, great food and some pretty
powerful Texas history. Now the peace and quiet might not be considered the best on the town’s Festival weekends, which happen twice a year. First in spring, the Bluebonnet Festival and then in the fall, the Scarecrow Festival. These two events bring thousands of people to this peaceful and quaint little town, but with strong support for their economy and the open arms of their businesses.
OK, some small towns have big festivals, but remember we are talking “tiny”. The town also welcomes visitors in the fall to a number of other events, such as the Airing of the Quilts, which will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, starting at 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. Main Street becomes the location that “airs” quilts belonging to residents or friends. The Providence Baptist Church, for that day, is the home for quilts made by members of the Friendship Quilt Guild, out of Brenham. This special day is filled with quilts everywhere, with over 100 on display for all to enjoy and many times learn about their history.
This year, the special attraction will be the priceless collection of a local resident sharing her beautiful collections of quilts, tablecloths, and other treasured linens. This is a day you don’t want to miss in Chappell Hill!
Other attractions happening in Chappell Hill, Texas will be the Annual Scarecrow Festival, October 12 & 13, 2024, with vendors lining the roads for great shopping, music and special Texas foods to be enjoyed.
Chappell Hill would not leave out or forget fun for the kiddos, so the Chappell Hill Chamber of Commerce hosts Trick or Treat on Main St., on Sunday, October 27 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Yes, the adults can participate in the fun also!
November and December will find several store hosting “Christmas Open Houses”. The best way to get a full list on these special holiday happenings is to visit the Chamber’s website:

As we close out the year of 2024, the popular and always much anticipated Chappell Hill Garden Club Christmas Home Tour bring the season in full force. Six locations are open for ticket holders and by the end of the day everyone feels there is a Santa Clause. For further information on this event, you can go to the Chamber web site or call 713-562-6191 for tickets.
To complete that same day the Chamber will host their final Annual event with the Texas Christmas Teddy Bear Parade. Children parade their teddy bears around Main St. and there are winners for best costumes, etc.
So, pick a great event or come for all the exciting and fun happenings in this tiny Texas town, that welcomes you with open arms! Enjoy our great eateries, wonderful B&B’s and great shopping venues along Main St. It will be another trip to a tiny town that will fill you with big memories!
With world-renowned opera, theater, and live music venues just steps away, the Heights is truly a cultural arts lover’s dream. In this issue, we revisit three notable venues highlighted in previous issues of Cultural Arts in The Heights Pages.
The Houston Saengerbund1703 Heights Boulevard (at 18th St.)
In the 2022 winter issue of Heights Pages, we introduced a new venue to the Heights, which is also one of Houston’s oldest and best-kept secrets. The Houston Saengerbund, founded in 1883 by German immigrants, is the oldest musical society in the city. Now located in the Heights after purchasing the former home of Heights Christian Church and Lambert Hall at 1703 Heights Blvd., the Houston Saengerbund continues its mission to promote the singing of
German Lieder and share the contributions of German music, language, and culture throughout the region and Texas.
The Houston Saengerbund hosts events and social activities year-round, most notably Tuesday evening food nights and rehearsals. With food and beer in abundance, the tagline "drinking club with a singing problem" has been humorously adopted. When I asked Larry Harms, Vice President of Houston Saengerbund, if I could print that, he responded that the moniker "has been used moderately frequently. It conveys--at once--the conviviality with underlying musical activity.”
For the most up-to-date information, visit their Facebook page.

Opera in the Heights (OH!) - Lambert Hall, 1703 Heights Boulevard (at 17th St.)
Lambert Hall was the only home to OH! for 26 years, and when The Houston Saengerbund purchased the property, they saved OH! from an uncertain future. According to their website, OH! is a professional regional company that provides a stage for emerging artists and brings affordable and accessible opera to the Greater Houston area.
Since 1996, OH! has held approximately 350 performances, earning a national reputation for its critical role in discovering and developing young talent and for the quality of its programming and productions. OH! is where the next generation of great opera singers emerges, shaping the future of the art form. First-timers and seasoned enthusiasts alike always find something fresh and inspiring in this intimate theater.
Opera in the Heights’ 2024-25 season begins September 20 with Gaetano Donizetti’s stirring masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor. Opening night for Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince is December 6. A co-world premiere of Laura Kaminsky and David Cote’s Lucidity is scheduled for February 21, 2025, followed by Gioacchino Rossini’s dazzling powerhouse L’italiana in Algeri on April 4, 2025.
For a complete schedule and season tickets, visit the OH! website at www.operaintheheights.org.
The Heights Theater is a live music venue housed in a restored 1920s theater, whose iconic sign has become a symbol of our Heights neighborhood.
After eight years on the scene with performances year-round, the Heights Theater is hardly a secret. If you are unfamiliar, the musical acts cover such a wide range that one of your favorites is likely to be booked at some point during the year. The website features an easy-to-follow calendar with extensive background information on the musicians.
The Heights Theater has outstanding reviews from the musicians themselves! Having been there, I can
attest that audiences love this amazing space just as much. Whether seated or standing (with room to dance), the space has it all—a full bar, snacks, and private balcony areas for parties.
Visit the website for a schedule and to purchase tickets. www.theheightstheater.com.
