THE BODY-

MOUTH

CONNECTION: MORE THAN JUST A GUT FEELING The last 18 months have been a turning point in our lives, fundamentally transforming how we work and live. For better or for worse, it has also given many of us the opportunity to slow down and pause, bringing us greater awareness of our personal wellbeing and a renewed focus on our health. HEALTH speaks with Dr. Michael Davidson, Director Clinical and Professional Education, EMEA about the body mouth connection and why it matters.

ORAL HEALTH IS OVERLOOKED

Never has the old adage ‘your health is your wealth’ held more meaning for the world than it does today. When we consider what constitutes ‘good health’ however, one crucial factor was often overlooked pre-COVID and continues to be overlooked today – and that’s the importance of maintaining good oral health, points out Dr. Davidson.

SYSTEMIC DISEASE OFTEN BEGINS IN THE MOUTH

Often described as ‘a mirror into the rest of the body’, he explains that the health of oral tissues is recognized as a possible powerful indicator of one’s overall health, with a significant number of diseases and conditions often revealing themselves in the mouth. “According to the Academy of General Dentistry, many systemic diseases often manifest first in the mouth – including heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disease,”

he explains, and saliva, in particular, has become a useful diagnostic tool that can alert doctors to the presence of toxins, hormones, and certain indicator antibodies. He adds, “Science is increasingly highlighting the link between our oral health – and more specifically our oral microbiome – and our general well-being, with recent studies demonstrating its impact on everything ranging from our digestion, immune system and blood pressure to the levels of inflammation in our bodies.” What all of this points to, is that there exists an unequivocal link between how healthy our mouth is and how well we are.

ORAL MICROBIOME

So, what exactly is our oral microbiome, and why does it matter so much? According to Dr. Davidson, oral microbiome is the bacteria and its genes that exist within our mouth. “There are billions of these bacteria in different parts of our bodies, including in the gut and on the skin, and they start colonizing at birth,” he says, in fact, the mouth is home to the second most diverse microbial ecosystem in the body, after the gut, with approximately 700 different species of bacteria found there. The microbiome community in your mouth harbors both healthy and not so healthy bacteria. Healthy bacteria are used to protect your mouth, for example, reducing tooth decay. While more harmful bacteria which stick to teeth, produce toxins that destroy the enamel which create cavities in the mouth and inflammation in the body. These bacteria have also been linked certain diseases, such as heart disease.

A BALANCED MICROBIOME

When our microbiome is in

balance, it helps us thrive, he says. However, when this balance is interrupted, due to factors including poor diet, poor oral hygiene, among other issues; it may impact the harmony in our bodies, causing pathogens and inflammation to manifest, and may lead to more serious problems and systemic disease. “Dental practitioners therefore, have a vital role to play within the community, to educate patients about these risks and act as a vital touch point to screen for health issues and complications during routine check-ups with their patients,” he says. “Backing the importance of oral health, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that oral diseases are the most common non-communicable diseases that affect people during their lifetime.” And yet, while there is a general acceptance that it’s ‘good’ to look after your oral health, there appears to be less public awareness about the link between oral health and overall health, and in particular, the role the oral microbiome plays in this.

EMBRACING A MORE HOLISTIC APPROACH

Within the health sector, Dr. Davidson observes that they are seeing an increasing shift towards a more holistic approach to the human body and a more functional way of treating health concerns and disease. He elaborates, “More practitioners are recognizing the benefits of getting to the ‘root’ of the problem, rather than simply treating the symptom. There appears to be a more conscious consideration of the natural symbiosis that exists within our bodies and allows us to function so seamlessly and organically.” H

MANAGING

ARTHRITIS PAIN The Middle East Arthritis Foundation reveals that around 20 percent of the UAE population is affected by some form of arthritis, but often diagnosed too late. Dr. Humeira Badsha - Consultant Rheumatologist and Board Member at Middle East Arthritis Foundation (MEAF) reveals that the activities an individual partakes in can have a major impact on their joints and the degree of arthritis pain they experience.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Dr. Humeira Badsha

Apr/May 2022

10

Physical exercise such as mobility and yoga, to name a few, is essential in relieving joint pain and stiffness as it helps with flexibility, strength, and endurance, says Dr. Badsha. She elaborates, “The amount and form of exercise recommended for each individual will vary depending on: which joints are affected, the amount of inflammation, joint stability, and whether joint replacements are already in place.”

POTENTIAL EXERCISES

Dr. Badsha advises each individual should have a customized exercise plan by consulting the right expert. This will better fulfill the medical needs of each patient because the type, intensity and age of each individual varies. “A few types of potential exercises include dance, classified as range of-motion exercise, help maintain normal joint movement and relieve stiffness,” she says, this type of exercise

helps maintain or increase flexibility. Also, moderate weight training (under professional supervision) or strengthening exercises help maintain or increase muscle strength. In turn, these strong muscles will aid in supporting and

protecting joints affected by arthritis. Aerobic or endurance exercise such as riding a bicycle improves cardiovascular fitness, helps with weight control and improves overall function, she explains. “Low-impact exercise such as yoga, can be safely practiced by any arthritis patient and helps in keeping the joints flexible, increasing the flow of synovial fluid to the joints and improving the range of motion. Furthermore, yoga poses strengthen the muscles, thus providing better support to the joints.”

CHANGE IN ROUTINES

Most patients are concerned with the ways to stay active within the pandemic as their lives and routines have changed drastically. Dr. Badsha helps them adapt to their exercise routines, set smart goals and develop a reward

system to keep them motivated, so that they are able to be consistent with their fitness habits. “The work from home lifestyle can be stationary for hours on end, hence, this can pose health risks, especially to those suffering from arthritis,” she explains. “It is advised to take constant short-breaks from the table and do some light-intensity activities, such as walking around the house and taking afternoon strolls, both which are healthy activities.”

A HOLISTIC APPROACH In addition to physical wellbeing, arthritis patients also need to pay attention to their mental well-being and diet, she tells. “Any form of physical exercise promotes the release of feel-good hormones such as endorphins, in our body, thus reducing the sensation of pain,” she says, and while there is no special diet or ‘miracle food’ to cure arthritis, a well-balanced diet without artificial colors or additives may help ease the symptoms of arthritis. Dr. Badsha elaborates, “A Mediterranean-style diet which includes fish, pulses, nuts, olive oil and plenty of fruit and vegetables is known to fight inflammation, strengthen bones and boost the immune system. Ensure a sufficient intake of calcium. Practice safe sun exposure for vitamin D absorption. Turmeric is also an ingredient that has antiinflammatory properties as believed by scientists.” H Visit: www.arthritis.ae

DIABETES & RAMADAN: FASTING THE RIGHT WAY With the holy month of Ramadan here, fasting (as prescribed) in the month may be somewhat tricky for those suffering from diabetes. Dr. Mahir Khalil Jallo, Clinical Professor/Consultant Internal Medicine & Endocrinology reveals how individuals suffering from diabetes can fast safely in order to maintain optimal health.

Health conditions

Fasting in Ramadan can usually be accomplished safely, says Dr. Jallo. “However, in individuals with health conditions, it’s best to consult a doctor who will determine if the individual will be able to fast safely, especially if he/she are taking any medications as it is not safe to skip these during fasting hours,” he says.

Apr/May 2022

14

“Always remember, if you feel unwell during a fast, try to rest, consider sipping some juice, and consult your clinician if your symptoms do not improve.”

Chronic medical issues Fasting is not meant to create excessive hardship

on the Muslim individual. Some patients with diabetes fall under the exempted category because their chronic metabolic disorder may place them at high risk for various complications with marked alteration of the pattern and amount of their meal and fluid intake, says Dr. Jallo. “If they insist on fasting during Ramadan, they are creating a medical challenge for themselves and their physicians.” These risks include hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, DKA and dehydration. He points out that physicians must quantify these risks and stratify each individual accordingly. “With the correct guidance, many people with diabetes can fast during Ramadan safely, but they must be under the close supervision of their care provider and made aware of the risks of fasting,” he says. “Individuals who fast against the advice provided by their healthcare professionals should follow expert and detailed guidance

to avoid the development of serious complications.”

Patient education

According to Dr. Jallo, studies have shown that the cornerstone of managing diabetes during Ramadan is patient education on fasting risks, self-glucose monitoring, nutrition, exercise, and medications. “Pre-Ramadan counselling reduces episodes of low blood glucose,” he says, and pre-Ramadan education is essential to remind people with diabetes about the importance of diet and exercise. Also, that regular glucose monitoring is essential to avoid complications, while reassuring them that this does not invalidate the fast.

adjustments to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia,” he says, and individuals on multiple diabetes therapies will find themselves at a greater risk of hypoglycaemia, in this case, dose reductions will be required to accommodate for the increased risk of hypoglycemia. He suggests a post-Ramadan follow-up consultation is recommended to reassess treatment regimens and discuss fasting experiences during Ramadan. “In our practice, we notice that with the correct advice and support, most people with type 2 diabetes can fast safely during Ramadan.”

Type 1 diabetes

Fasting in Ramadan for individuals with type 1 diabetes is generally associated with a high risk of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. “With well-structured education, the risks of fasting can be reduced, and suitable individuals can be allowed to fast under strict monitoring and after appropriate insulin dose adjustments with individualization taking in consideration pre-Ramadan diabetes control; previous Ramadan experience; availability of recourses; duration of the fast; the level of education; and the motivation for self-care,” he says.

Type 2 diabetes

In individuals fasting with type 2 diabetes, he advises a pre-Ramadan assessment is vital to evaluate the risks, educate the patient in self-management of the condition, and to produce a patient-specific treatment plan. “Individuals taking metformin, Sulfonylureas or insulin will need to make dose

Important Tips to Help Muslims Adjust Safely to Ramadan Fasting

Stay hydrated. Breaking your fast at iftar with water ensures that you get the best source of hydration. Drink fluids several times throughout the night, those without caffeine. Eat a variety of foods during the evening. Whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean protein, healthy fat like olive oil and nuts nourish your body with all the healthy nutrients. Remember always that portion size is important. Eating mindfully during Iftar gives you more energy than eating huge amounts all at one time. For suhour (the pre-sunrise meal that helps blood sugar remain most stable and provides energy), some elements to include are whole grain cereal, whole grain bread and oatmeal. Also, fresh fruits, vegetables and protein from milk, yogurt, eggs, and nuts. Keep moving. Though fasting can be physically exhausting, try not to be completely sedentary. Try to switch exercise to the evening after breaking the fast. H Reference:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

DENGUE FEVER While COVID-19 has been at the forefront of health news, recently dengue fever has resurfaced in certain regions and is potentially deadly. Dr.Baljinder Singh, General Practitioner and Head of the Emergency department explains what you need to know about dengue fever and how to avoid it altogether.

Apr/May 2022

16

DEFINED

Dengue fever, explains Dr. Singh, is a mosquito-borne illness that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. He elaborates, “Mild dengue fever causes a high fever and flu-like symptoms. The severe form of dengue fever, also called dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause serious bleeding, a sudden drop in blood pressure (shock) and death.”

REGION SPECIFIC

According to Dr. Singh, dengue fever is most common in Southeast Asia, the western Pacific islands, Latin America and Africa. “But the disease has been spreading to new areas, including local outbreaks in Europe and southern parts of the United States,”

he says. “Factors believed to be responsible for the spread of dengue include an explosive population growth, unplanned urban overpopulation with inadequate public health systems, poor control of standing water and vectors, viral evolution, and increased international recreational, business, and military travel to endemic areas.”

SYMPTOMS AND RED FLAGS

On average, he points out that dengue becomes symptomatic after a 4-to-10-days incubation period, with a range of 3 to 14 days. “Dengue symptoms usually last 2 to 7 days,” he says, and symptoms in patients with dengue may include any of the following: fever, headache, retro-orbital pain, and/or severe myalgias (muscular pain, especially of the lower back, arms, and legs.) Other symptoms include arthralgias (joint pain, usually of the knees and shoulders), nausea and vomiting (diarrhea is rare), rash, which he says is a maculopapular or macular confluent rash over the face, thorax, and flexor surfaces, with islands of skin sparing. There may also be weakness, malaise, and lethargy, as well as an altered taste sensation, sore throat, or even anorexia. “There may also be mild hemorrhagic manifestations, for example, petechiae, bleeding gums, epistaxis, menorrhagia, or hematuria, as well as lymphadenopathy,” he tells.

COVID-19 mostly causes serious respiratory illness and dengue fever can cause bleeding complications.” Dengue fever is typically a selflimiting disease with a mortality rate of less than one percent. When treated, dengue hemorrhagic fever has a mortality rate of two to five percent, he says. “When left untreated, dengue hemorrhagic fever has a mortality rate as high as 50 percent,” he says, and survivors usually recover without sequelae and develop immunity to the infecting serotype. Complications and sequelae of dengue virus infections are rare, but may include the following: cardiomyopathy, seizures, encephalopathy, and viral encephalitis, liver injury, depression, and/or pneumonia.

TREATMENT FOR DENGUE FEVER

recovering from dengue fever, drink plenty of fluids; and you may take paracetamol for fever and body-pain, but avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen as it may increase risk of bleeding,” he says. “Consult a doctor if you have any of the following signs and symptoms of dehydration: decreased urination, few or no tears, dry mouth or lips, lethargy or confusion, or cold or clammy extremities.”

PRECAUTIONARY ADVICE

Dr. Singh strongly urges to be aware, especially those who have experienced prior dengue fever, to avoid mosquito bites, including the use of appropriate mosquito repellants, and peridomestic vector control, when traveling to dengue-endemic areas. H

No specific treatment for dengue fever exists, tells Dr. Singh. “While

Dr.Singh points out that both COVID-19 and dengue fever are viral illnesses and can have similar symptoms and both have high morbidity and mortality if left untreated. “Serious

OVERVIEW According to Dr. Rajkumar, psoriasis is a common, chronic, inflammatory and proliferative condition of the skin, associated with systemic manifestations in many organ systems. “Psoriasis is a non-communicable, disfiguring, and disabling disease that has a greatly negative impact on the quality of life for those with the disease,” she says. “The most common characteristic of the skin rash is red, scaly, sharply demarcated lesions that are seen particularly over the extensor surfaces and scalp.” It also affects the nails and joints. According to the International Association of Psoriasis Federations, approximately 125 million individuals across the globe are affected by psoriasis.

LINK TO THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

In psoriasis, she points out that any infection that affects the immune system can trigger a certain type of psoriasis, which is why there can often be a flare up following an ear infection, bronchitis, tonsillitis, or even respiratory infection. “These kinds of infections should be treated immediately,” she advises.

LIFESTYLE MODIFICATION There are several dos and don’ts when it comes to psoriasis. “Special consideration should be given to lifestyle factors and behaviors that contribute to the overall health and treatment responsiveness,” she says, these include weight management and smoking cessation. She

recommends using thick, nonfragranced moisturizers on a daily basis in conjunction with additional baths which can be infused with colloidal oatmeal, Epsom salts or coal tar to help alleviate inflammation, irritation, dryness, and redness.

SUN EXPOSURE

While a majority of individuals avoid sunbathing in an attempt to decrease the risk of developing skin cancer, those who suffer from psoriasis may benefit from it. That said, Dr. Rajkumar advises only exposing the regions of the body affected by psoriasis. To avoid sunburn, cover the unaffected skin with clothing or make use of an SPF 30 sunscreen and limit your sun exposure to 15 minutes.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS AND PSORIASIS As psoriasis is a health problem that is visibly apparent to others and because it’s chronic, it can often take a toll on the individual’s self-confidence, mood, and even relationships. And while millions of people across the world are affected by this disease, only a small percentage actually understands what it is. Dr. Rajkumar also explains that increased levels of depression, anxiety, and worry often results in flare ups of the disease, leading to moderate or sometimes even severe psoriasis. She also recommends reaching out to family members, friends and seeking medical

advice as psoriasis is not simply a painful physical condition; it’s also emotionally draining, with depression, dissatisfaction, and loneliness commonly experienced by those who have the disease. “The best treatment for the mental health concerns listed is to consult a dermatologist, as they would be able to better explain the disease and advise on the best possible treatment, which in turn could reduce the mental health impact that it can have,” she explains.

TREATMENT It is also important to note that there are various treatment modalities, depending on the type and severity of the disease. “Mild plaque psoriasis without psoriatic arthritis can be treated with various topical treatments such as coal tar, potent topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, followed by phototherapy as a second line of treatment,” she says. “In terms of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis treatment, phototherapy is the first line of treatment, followed by oral medications such as immunosuppressants and apremilast.” However, in case patients do not respond to the aforementioned treatment, the next step is biologicals, which can have a great promise for individuals with moderate to severe psoriasis, and they represent a significant step forward in the development of psoriasis medications that will improve the quality of life of patients. Are Your Children Suffering from

Respiratory Ailments? With the start of the global COVID pandemic in late 2019, respiratory conditions in children actually reduced due to various factors, including lockdowns and remote learning which exposed children less to other regular infections, also. But with the omicron variant emerging as the main strain along with the start back of face-to-face learning, respiratory and other infections including COVID are increasing in children. Dr. Rimzim Gupta, Specialist Pediatrician explains more.

Apr/May 2022

20

OVERVIEW According to Dr. Gupta, while a cough and a cold are very common complaints (and most of the time are indicative of minor illness), they may be indications of more sinister conditions like pneumonia and asthma, especially if associated with fever and breathing difficulty. “Most of the respiratory illnesses in children are the result of either allergies or infections,” she says. “In infancy, the allergic conditions mainly present as skin problems and diarrhea while in toddlers and older children they present with rhinitis and/or wheezing apart from skin manifestations.”

KEY RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES IN CHILDREN The key respiratory illnesses in children, details Dr. Gupta, are acute nasopharyngitis (common cold), upper respiratory tract infections, childhood asthma, and pneumonia. She adds, “While it is crucial to diagnose and treat bacterial infections, especially pneumonia, viral infections are usually selflimited and occur as minor illnesses.”

The good news is that with the advent of good vaccination coverage, respiratory infections have reduced to some extent, but she points out they still continue to be a major issue in children; especially bacterial pneumonias, and contribute to a major portion of hospitals admissions. While influenza and other viral infections are responsible for most upper respiratory tract infections.

TREATMENT MODALITIES As far as the treatment is concerned, Dr. Gupta advises that a simple cough and cold without fever or respiratory difficulty can be managed at home by simple cough and cold home remedies or medications. “Here it is important to note that in a child with

comorbidities like chronic lung disease, congenital heart disease, or immunodeficiency, even viral infections lead to severe symptoms and secondary bacterial infections,” she says. “Bacterial infections, though usually more severe, but if diagnosed early and treated with appropriate antibiotics, respond fast to treatment.”

LIFESTYLE WELLNESS TIPS TO PREVENT RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES Managing your home environment: regular vacuuming can minimize indoor air pollution. Avoid smoking indoors, practice good sanitization habits, and regular servicing of air conditioners can help. The home should also have good ventilation and sun exposure. Promote hand hygiene in children. Adhere to a proper diet, this includes a balanced diet with hygienic home cooked food and with all fruits and vegetables properly cleaned. Timely vaccinations are recommended. Avoidance of known allergens, if any for the individual child, is highly recommended. H

Understanding the Clinical and Economic Burden of Treatment-Resistant Depression APPROXIMATELY ONE IN THREE PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDERS DO NOT RESPOND TO TREATMENT AND ARE CONSIDERED TO HAVE TREATMENT-RESISTANT DEPRESSION (TRD). IN THE GCC, COUNTRIES SUCH AS KSA, KUWAIT AND THE UAE WOULD NEED TO SPEND BETWEEN 5 TO 20 PERCENT OF THEIR ANNUAL HEALTHCARE BUDGETS TO COMBAT THIS DISEASE. TO EXPLAIN MORE, BULENT OZTURK, MEDICAL AFFAIRS DIRECTOR JANSSEN GCC TALKS ABOUT TREATMENT-RESISTANT DEPRESSION (TRD) AND STEPS THAT COULD HELP DRIVE AWARENESS, MAKING THE TREATMENT MORE ACCESSIBLE AND REDUCING ITS HEALTHCARE BURDEN.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly one in four people around the world develop at least one mental or neurological disorder in their lifetime. What factors increase a person’s risk to develop Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)? “MDD is a devastating psychiatric disease, causing patients to suffer a 20-fold higher risk of suicide than others. Some factors that contribute to the risk of developing the disease are chronic medical conditions, age, family history, major life changes and severe trauma or chronic stress.”

Depression is one of the leading causes of disability and the fourth leading contributor to global disease, yet recent investment into mental health has not matched its rising concerns. How does this affect healthcare systems? “Depression is one of the leading causes of illness and

Apr/May 2022

24

disability among adolescents and adults. From dementia to schizophrenia, almost one billion people worldwide suffer from a mental disorder. Lost productivity because of two of the most common mental disorders, anxiety, and depression, costs the global economy $1 trillion each year. Approximately one in three people who suffer from MDD do not respond to treatment and are considered to have

Treatment Resistant Depression or TRD.” “Besides these concerns, TRD also raises a heavy economic burden in terms of healthcare resource consumption and indirect costs to the system from loss of productivity. In the GCC, TRD costs for the KSA, Kuwait and the UAE were estimated at SAR 14,997m, KWD 30m, and Dh2,461m year-on-year, respectively.”

Why is the UAE an important geography for the healthcare industry to focus its efforts on mental health?

“The UAE classifies mental health as a vital component of a balanced care system and sufficient attention is being given to mental and behavioral disorders in the national level planning. The UAE has adopted integrated approaches and strategies for these disorders recognizing their comorbidity and consequences, and to move the health system towards more effective and integrated management, and prevention, in addition to care.” “Considering mental health, a national health priority, much progress has been achieved by the United Arab Emirates, however, there is still a long way to go. Decision makers, leaders, relatives, patients, professionals, and civil societies are working collaboratively towards achieving the shared vision, where UAE citizens can experience good mental health and well-being, mainly supported by integrated mental health services. All these reasons provide the right eco system for the healthcare sector to work in the area of mental health.”

What MDD treatment programs are currently available in the UAE?

“The UAE is committed to the mental health of its people and in recent years has increased efforts through awareness programmes, counselling, and psychological support, providing pathways to patients for longterm care.”

“Leading government entities, including the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP), Department of Health, UAE Ministry of Happiness, Dubai Health Authority and Abu Dhabi Authority have addressed mental health as a priority. Mental health is also one of

the 15 strategic programs under Dubai Health Strategy 2016 – 2021. The initiative is focused towards a Healthier and Happier Community which aims to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness, as well as provide patient empowerment.” “During the current pandemic, MOHAP in the UAE launched a Hayat (Life) programme for mental health support during COVID-19 and a dedicated telephone counselling hotline. The UAE’s National Programme for Happiness and Wellbeing

has also been prioritised under the campaign #Dontworry. Other notable initiatives in the UAE include the launch of community mental health units and a free mental health support network in Abu Dhabi, under the theme “Darkness into Light UAE” to raise awareness about mental health issues.” H

RAMADAN:

BEING GRATEFUL

Applying the learnings Ramadan is that time of the year again when our spiritual self takes more prominence. And as we are globally inching towards a better life and accepting the changes that have happened, clinical psychologist Jyotika Aggarwal reveals there is abundant opportunity for introspection and giving.

Mar/Apr 2022

26

Sometimes, it is the hardest of events that teach us gratitude. The learnings from this phenomenon, if applied to our daily lives, could lead to innate happiness. A few ways to use these learnings are:

Welcome unpredictability:

We have seen that life can get unpredictable and hard irrespective of our actions. In our lives, think of the times we have spent planning and

the time spent in the rat race. Ask yourself, was any of this dogmatic planning able to undo the consequences of the pandemic? Instead, if we open ourselves to life’s unpredictability, we will be more prepared cognitively to manage setbacks and quickly come up with alternatives.

Authenticity: Let us feel

gratitude for the revelations of our true needs. These few years have helped us see the difference between the things we want versus the things we think we need to be happy or successful. It has guided us to realize our ability to live with less things. This is a boon and will help us declutter our space and mind.

Appreciate bonds: For many of us who were away from family, after a few weeks of space, from deep within we realized the importance of our connections and bonds with family. In fact, our bond with ourselves, our own confidence in our abilities and self was strengthened. Our resilience was tested, we hit rock bottom in some way, but we did not give up. We kept pushing ourselves forward and conquered.

on these teachings and add value to our lives. We would be less anxious, less depressed, lesser in the need for obsessive control and rather, fill our lives with peace, acceptance and readiness. When we think of Ramadan and spirituality, a part of it also involves, not just improving our own lives, it also involves spreading kindness and improving the lives of those around us. Two important ways to do this are:

See and support: Observe what

is needed in the world today. Don’t just help for the validation of it. Take some time, help in a way that you truly believe will make a difference. Of course, some usual ways are in the form of donations, volunteering time at NGO’s, mentoring those who will benefit from our teaching, but make sure, you believe strongly in the positive effects of how you chose to help.

Share the love: For family and friends, we can show thoughtfulness and love through gestures of love. Handmade gifts, lending an ear to listen to their problems, asking them where you can help and genuinely providing guidance for the same. One of the most precious gifts we can give someone is the gift of time. Nothing shows love like listening to someone non-judgmentally and accepting them for who they are. The whole month can be enlightening by creating a harmonious balance between self-improvement and our care for others. For every day of Ramadan, chalk out a new holistic goal for yourself and work on it. Achieving these, will help you uncover different joys and a unique side to yourself. It would be gloriously beneficial if we could make these values and self-growth a part of our everyday life as well. H

Accepting silver linings:

Through these times, we were able to slow down our lives. Focus on things that really mattered, allowed ourselves to get back to our core self, and rediscover our self.

Advice According to Aggarwal, maybe it would help during this season for us to capitalize

Skincare in the Decades

With a huge surge in skinimilism, ethically sourced, clean beauty, and skin rehabilitation, Saadiya Ahmad meets with Dr. Fazeela Abbasi, Dermatologist and Aesthetic Skin Specialist to understand the latest trends in skincare moving forward.

Apr/May 2022

28

For everyone

According to Dr. Abbasi, a clean beauty regimen with ethically made products to be used by all age groups will be in demand. She adds, “People are embracing gentler ingredients and chemical free products in their routines. This entails opting to repair and nourish the skin barrier. I believe the eco-friendly cosmetic movement is in full swing and will continue to blossom well in coming years.”

Skin rehabilitation

It’s all about skin rehabilitation. “As we have all experienced the effects of mask wearing and what it has done to our skin barrier, there is an increased interest in

taking care of barrier repair and hydration more than ever before,” she says, therefore, products that address this need will continue to be on the rise — look for products with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, physiological lipids, peptides, and organic essential oils to help heal a compromised skin barrier.

A new kind of SPF

SPF will remain of utmost importance, but in 2022, sun care formulas will come with a bonus benefit: blue light protection, she says. Our greatest exposure to blue light is from the sun, but people are spending more time in front of screens and digital devices which also emits blue light. With a growing concern around the effects of blue light on the skin, such as premature aging and hyperpigmentation, Dr. Abbasi points out that we can

predict to see an increase in products tailoring to this. Blue light protection is due to make its debut in products beyond traditional sunscreens in 2022.

Less is more

She advises we use only the bare necessities, including a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and SPF — and pick formulas based on your skin’s particular needs. “This is where the importance of gentle ingredients comes in, such as bakuchiol, which can be used as a milder alternative to retinol if your skin is on the sensitive side,” she says. “This natural, plant-derived compound is popping up all over the skincare market this fall and with good reason. It was discovered as an excellent clinically-proven alternative to retinol products in 2014, but has long been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine.”

A gentler approach

The latest wave of skincare brands are focused less on aggressive, fast-acting results and more on nurturing the skin’s barrier, maintaining a healthy, diverse microbiome (the good bacteria that live on your skin and keep it healthy and happy) and aligning more with self-care, says Dr. Abbasi. “Healthy behaviors such as exercise, good diet, and stress management have the potential to reverse aging on a molecular level and partly restore the vitality of a person’s cells,” she says, concluding, “So, we must have a holistic approach in taking care of ourselves from inside out in all age groups.” H

WITH THE PLETHORA OF ANTI-AGING TREATMENTS AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET TODAY, UNDERSTANDING THE KEY OBJECTIVE OF EACH TREATMENT CAN HELP YOU TO CAREFULLY CURATE THE TREATMENT SUITED FOR YOU AND YOUR LIFESTYLE. TO LEARN MORE, HEALTH MEETS WITH DR. SARANYA GADDE, SPECIALIST DERMATOLOGY & COSMETOLOGY, WHO PROVIDES AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT WHAT’S TRENDING TODAY IN THE WORLD OF ANTI-AGING PROCEDURES.

BOTOX According to Dr. Gadde, Botox provides immediate results correction. She adds, “It can be used for the forehead lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, and frown correction.” But that’s not all; Botox can also be applied to lift the eyebrows, slim the cheeks, correct a gummy smile, treat a puckered chin, and even define the jawline (known as a Nefertiti lift.) “It also works well to correct the tree trunk lines of the neck area,” she says, and can help diminish the puckering signs of aging on the chin area.

FILLERS WITH BOTOX Dermal fillers can be used in conjunction with Botox for advanced aging. ‘’Fillers contain hyaluronic acid which is the natural content of our dermis,” she explains. ‘’It can also help in filling the deflated hollows of the face caused by aging.”

THERMAL FACELIFT An innovative, non-surgical correction of aging, a thermal facelift helps to build collagen naturally. Dr. Gadde adds, “This technique utilizes heat to correct aging in the late 30’s to early 40’s and leaves no scars.” The best

part is that this is non-surgical and requires no anesthesia. “This technique is a safe way to maintain your skin and can even minimize the appearance of pores.”

FILLERS Dermal fillers can do a broad spectrum of corrections, from filling the forehead lines to plumping the lips for a natural looking pout. ‘’It also works well to correct an elongated chin, for nasolabial folds’ correction, and can fill in the under eye areas with tear trough elevation,” she says. “’Sunken eyes can be corrected and even hands can be rejuvenated using dermal fillers.”

and can target problematic areas,’’ she tells, and overall, hydrates and can help prevent the appearance of aging.

HYDRAFACIAL This refreshing facial can remove excess sebum and blackheads. Dr. Gadde explains that by exfoliating the dead, superficial skin cells, the skin looks more polished and hydrated. It also opens the pores and increases skin oxygenation which can help serum penetration reach the deeper layers of the skin, and is safe for acne prone, sensitive skin. H

PRP FOR THE FACE With no artificial products used, PRP can rejuvenate and safely brighten the face. ‘’It’s a safe procedure for the maintenance of facial skin and post pores aging,” she says, and also can help in a facelift procedure and can even rejuvenate the backs of the hands.

MESOTHERAPY Essentially, mesotherapy supplements the skin with desired antioxidants. “It can clear pigmentation, stimulates collagen,

THE RIGHT CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS

Question: How do I know if I am a candidate for dental implants? Prof. Hesham Marei, Consultant Oral

Maxillofacial Surgeon & Implantologist, Dean, College of Dentistry, Gulf Medical University responds: “Today, placement of dental implants is the standard of care that is offered to patients with missing teeth. If you have missing teeth, you need to visit your dentist, who will perform a clinical and radiographic examination. If you are medically fit and well and have good quantity and quality of bone at the site of missing teeth, the implants placement will be a straight forward and simple procedure. However, if you are suffering from systemic problems such as uncontrolled diabetes or hypertension or taking any regular medications, consultation with a physician is essential to control the medical problems before proceeding with dental implants. When there is a limitation in bone quantity, use of short/narrow implants or bone grafting are options that can be selected to allow patients to replace their missing teeth. So, if you have missing teeth, proceed and book an appointment with your dentist immediately.”

TOXIC POSITIVITY

Question: In my efforts to always stay positive, a friend pointed out toxic positivity; why is this detrimental? Mai Elsayed, Clinical Hypnotherapist with

Psychotherapy Skills, Internationally Published Author/NextGen MENA Committee member responds: “As much as having a positive mindset is beneficial for our overall health and well-being, practicing toxic positivity can cause more harm than good. Toxic positivity is putting a positive spin on everything, even situations that can be traumatic and emotionally excruciating. Under the name of positivity, people neglect their own need to grieve and express their emotions. Being positive all the time is not humanly possible as we all go through emotional and psychological cycles. We may also face situations that hurt our feelings. We need to keep in mind that our emotions, no matter how unpleasant they may feel, serve a purpose and when we inhibit, hide or mask our true sentiments, we invalidate our internal human experience. It can cause us to go into a state of denial or repression, which can in return transform the energy of our repressed emotions into psychosomatic illnesses.”

Department responds: “Melasma is a skin discoloration of the skin, with darker patches than normal skin color of any ethnicity, on the areas exposed in the sun. The main culprit of triggering this skin condition is not clearly known, but seems to be of hormonal origin and prolonged sun exposure, without sunscreen. The pigment causing melasma is called melanin and is produced in the melanocytes. Caucasian skin types can suffer from this skin condition, but as their skin has less melanin on the surface of the skin, when treating the patches of melasma, the skin surrounding the patches is not affected, resulting in an easier evening of the skin tone. Asian skin types IV, V and African VI, with darker patches, is less reactive to the treatment, since the density of melanocytes and melanin is greater and has the risk of reacting less or causing a bleaching like effect on the melasma patch. This leads to unevenness on the face. Also, most Asian patients with hormonal induced melasma have very sensitive skin. Treatments such as peels and/ or lasers are harsh for these skin types and results can oscillate from good to a disaster with not much margin inbetween. Moreover, if patients do not comply with the strict protocols prescribed, the relapse will occur at the first prolonged sun exposure.”
