Top AI Trends in AI powered

healthcare innovations in 2025

A retrospect on the year that was and a look into the future goals of healthcare

December 2025

8

From being a regional healthcare hub, the UAE has transformed into a global leader in healthcare with its rapid application of AI innovations in predictive analysis, advanced diagnostics that use algorithms for early detection and diagnosis, to offer personalized treatments. These include AI-enhanced surgical robotics, automation in streamlining administrative workflows and building up a complex and sophisticated AI-enabled ecosystem within the healthcare sector. In 2025, Generative AI and machine learning applications have been the key drivers behind these advancements, moving healthcare from reactive to proactive, predictive care. The entire momentum in healthcare is targeted to meet the goals of UAE’s National Strategy for Healthcare in 2031. This is part of the broader “We the UAE 2031” vision that focuses on transforming the country into a leading global healthcare system by 2031. This will be achieved through advanced technology, prevention, personalized care, and integrating wellbeing into all aspects of life, aiming for top 15 rankings in quality by focusing on digital health, specialized services, and enhanced public-private collaboration for accessible, future-ready, and patientcentric care.

His Excellency Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of Health and Prevention for the UAE, defined the UAE’s stance very astutely. He was speaking at an AI week held in November at the Mohammad Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) “We view AI not as a tool, but as a fundamental force contributing to the very future of healthcare in our nation,” he said. “We have a vision for deploying AI: it is focused on a healthy UAE and a long life for people who live in the UAE. It is patient-centric, and it is something we already see the results today.”

It therefore does not come as a surprise that the AI healthcare market in Dubai is projected to reach US$138 million by 2030, growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 34.6%. For the entire UAE, the artificial intelligence in healthcare market is projected to reach higher values. December 2025

Cover Story Key innovations The sweeping changes in healthcare in UAE comes with implementation of several tech and AI driven innovations that have already been implemented this year.

AI-Powered Diagnostics AI algorithms are now integrated into medical imaging devices (MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound) to analyze scans with high accuracy, often surpassing human capabilities in detecting conditions like lung nodules or breast cancer. Companies like Viz.ai are using AI to fast-track the detection of timesensitive conditions like strokes by immediately alerting specialists. Similarly, many ophthalmology hospitals are integrating machine learning techniques with AI algorithms to deploy in early detection of major retinal diseases to prevent severe visual impairment or blindness. In Abu Dhabi, M42, a global health leader powered by technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and genomics, recently unveiled landmark findings from a large-scale population study on AI-powered tuberculosis (TB) screening, published in the prestigious scientific journal npj Digital Medicine - Nature. The study assessed AI Radiology in Screening TB (AIRIS-TB), M42’s cutting-edge AI model engineered to streamline routine tuberculosis screenings, allowing radiologists to focus on more complex or urgent cases. AIRIS-TB demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving an Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUROC) of 98.5% - a clear indicator of its high efficiency in triaging CXRs for TB. December 2025 10

M42 also unveiled an impactful advancement in healthcare technology with the launch of Med42, a new open-access Clinical Large Language Model (LLM). The 70 billion parameter, generative artificial intelligence (AI) model is poised to transform the future of AI across the healthcare sector and create a direct impact on patient care outcomes.

Precision Medicine & Genomics: When it comes to

decoding genomics or interpreting clinical data to design tailormade personalized treatments, healthcare providers in UAE are

using AI for precision results. This includes predicting drug responses, identifying disease-linked mutations, and developing targeted cancer therapies, which can lead to better outcomes and fewer side effects.

Generative AI in Drug Discovery: Pharma companies

are deploying Generative AI models to speed up the drug discovery process. These are used to design novel molecular structures; simulate biological interactions, and identify new uses for existing drugs, leading to higher success rates in clinical trials.

Smart sustainable hospitals: Technology

advances have not only made healthcare delivery efficient but also more environment-friendly. Government initiatives such as the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategy are inspiring the change to make hospitals more energy efficient, reducing the carbon footprint. These efforts include incorporating green building techniques, utilizing renewable energy sources, and implementing resource-efficient operations.

AI-Enhanced Robotic Surgery: Robotic surgical

systems, such as the da Vinci and Mako systems, are incorporating AI for improved precision, realtime guidance, and automation of routine tasks. These innovations lead to shorter recovery times and fewer complications.

Remote Patient Monitoring and Wearables: The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and AI have powered advanced wearable devices and smart implants that provide continuous, real-time health monitoring of vital signs

(heart rate, glucose levels, etc.). This allows for early detection of health changes and proactive intervention by healthcare providers, extending care beyond the hospital setting.

Autonomous AI Agents directing Workflow: This has

completely revolutionized the way hospitals have developed systems to manage their workforce, streamline and schedule surgeries, allocate resources and speed up automation of patient records and clinical data, thereby cutting back on time taken and reducing the administrative burden on staff.

An interesting case in point is that of the Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Abu Dhabi (CCAD) which has made a marked 11.3% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2017 and is aiming to cut its emissions by 21% by 2030. Such practices, when adopted by other hospitals too will not only make healthcare a more sustainable sector but also improve patient outcomes. Overall, 2025 has been a year of quantum leaps in deploying latest AI technologies in healthcare to create a more efficient, personalized, and predictive healthcare ecosystem.

The future of healthcare is humancentered, where technology amplifies empathy and precision. AI is not replacing clinicians - it’s empowering them to deliver care that is smarter, faster, and deeply personal. The question is no longer if AI will redefine healthcare—it’s how fast we embrace it. H

Longevity

An anti-aging breakthrough

Greg Macpherson, founder of SRW Laboratories, New Zealand in conversation with HEALTH, talks about his revolutionary nutraceutical – The Cel Protocol that has shown positive results in studies on biological age reduction, and will be introduced in UAE this month For the benefit of our average reader, can you elaborate on what is a Nutraceutical and the role it plays in tweaking the overall health of an individual? A nutraceutical is essentially a bridge between nutrition and pharmaceuticals. They generally contain a bioactive compound derived from food that provides health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Unlike drugs, nutraceuticals work gently and holistically, supporting the body’s natural systems rather than overriding them.

December 2025 14

In everyday terms a nutraceutical range like SRW’s The Cel Protocol supports health by addressing the root causes of aging at the cellular level. It helps optimize DNA stability, mitochondrial energy production, and immune response, leading to better energy, sharper cognition, and improved physical vitality. Over time, this can mean fewer aches, better sleep, and a more resilient body against everyday stressors. It’s not a quick fix but a daily strategy for proactive wellness, much like exercise or a balanced diet and the benefits compound over time.

How does the nutraceutical work in reversing epigenetics? What is the principle and how is this measured in absolute terms? Epigenetics refers to the chemical “switches” on our DNA that turn genes on or off without altering the genetic code itself. These switches accumulate wear and tear over time, accelerating biological aging. The Cel Protocol works by targeting the hallmarks of aging (like genomic

instability, telomere attrition, and cellular senescence) with natural bio actives that influence these epigenetic marks, promoting a more youthful gene expression profile. The principle is multifaceted, for instance, Cel¹ includes 2-HOBA (hobamine) to neutralize damaging reactive carbonyl species that disrupt DNA methylation; astragaloside from astragalus supports telomere repair; and pterostilbene in Cel² modulates sirtuins, enzymes that regulate epigenetic clocks. Senolytics like fisetin in Cel³ clear “zombie” senescent cells that drive epigenetic drift. Together, they foster an environment where cells reset toward healthier patterns, effectively slowing or reversing the epigenetic clock. The measurement of biological aging is precise and objective, using advanced DNA methylation analysis via epigenetic clocks like Horvath’s pan-tissue clock or GrimAge. In our 12-month clinical trial with 51 participants (aged 54-84), we saw a significant reduction in epigenetic age acceleration (EAA)

When we talk of longevity, there would be some parameters against which the efficacy of the nutraceutical is measured? What are those parameters and how soon can the average user notice the marked difference in aging or reversal of age? Longevity efficacy is measured against validated biomarkers of aging, not just lifespan. Key parameters from our trial include:

across multiple clocks. This isn’t subjective, it’s quantified as the difference between chronological age and biological age, with statistical significance confirming the reversal.

Is the study being quoted and is there any FDA approval for the product? Yes, our landmark single-arm clinical trial, published in Aging (2025), involving 51 healthy adults over 12 months is getting attention. It demonstrated reductions in biological age, improvements in grip strength, chair stand performance, and body composition (e.g., waist circumference reduction), with no adverse events reported. This independent research validates The Cel Protocol’s efficacy on key aging biomarkers. Regarding FDA approval, as a nutraceutical range, The Cel Protocol is classified as a dietary supplement, not a drug, so it doesn’t require FDA pre-market approval for safety or efficacy claims. All ingredients are GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) and compliant with global standards.

Nutraceuticals can be dispensed as over the counter (OTC) supplements, and I would like

to know how it is planned to be dispensed? When will people in UAE be able to get it?

The Cel Protocol is designed as an OTC supplement for easy access with no prescription needed. It’s dispensed via our amazing retail partners like Boots, Watsons and Staywell across the UAE. Is this something that can be covered under insurance? If not, are the prices affordable? As a premium nutraceutical focused on preventive longevity, The Cel Protocol isn’t typically covered by standard health insurance plans. However, some wellness or elective programs may offer reimbursement, and we’re exploring partnerships to make it more accessible. On affordability. Yes, it’s positioned as an accessible daily investment in health. In the UAE, individual Cel products start at around Dh 516. That’s comparable to a gym membership or quality skincare routine. For most, the long-term health span gains far outweigh the cost.

Trial Outcome (12 Months)

Full reversal effects, like epigenetic shifts, optimize over 12 months with consistent use.

December 2025 15

Are there any dos or don’ts that users need to follow while implementing this regimen? To maximize benefits, here’s a simple guide based on our protocols: Dos: Please take as per your individual need - 2 capsules daily of each product. Pair it with lifestyle elements that are known to support healthy longevity like 10-30 minutes of daily walking or exercise, getting good hydration, having a healthy diet, and managing your stress.

In terms of measurable parameters does it have some solid milestones - such as reduction in blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, or reversal of fatty liver etc.... How does one know? While our trial focused on core Aging Hallmarks, it indirectly supports metabolic health. Solid milestones include: Body Composition Improvements: Significant reductions in weight, BMI, and waist circumference, which correlate with lower risks of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. Physical Function: Enhanced chair stand (faster completion, indicating better muscle power) and grip strength, these are signals that you will experience improved overall vitality. Epigenetic Proxies: Decreased DamAge and stem cell division rate, signalling reduced cellular stress. For blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol, or fatty liver reversal, our data shows trends toward metabolic stability via AMPK activation (from berberine in Cel³) and NAD+ boosting (NMN in December 2025 16

Cel²), but direct measurements weren’t primary endpoints in our study. We recommend baseline tests and follow-ups with a doctor to personalize your longevity and discuss which areas in your lifestyle you can also adopt to get extra benefits.

The longevity market is big and patients are waiting for the next-level health miracles. Can we safely say, The Cel Protocol is one of them? The longevity market is indeed booming, valued at billions and growing, as people seek science-backed ways to extend health span. The Cel Protocol isn’t a “miracle” in the sense of overnight cures. That said, our trial’s 5.71-year biological age reversal in just 12 months and its ability to improve physiological parameters like strength positions it as a next-level advancement, one of the first nutraceuticals with peer-reviewed epigenetic data showing meaningful slowdown of aging processes. It’s safe to say it’s a game-changer for accessible, natural intervention, empowering users to reclaim years of vitality without invasive treatments. We’re proud to lead this space, more clinical trials are underway to build on this foundation.

Track your progress, use apps for energy/mood, and consider epigenetic testing via TruDiagnostic when you start and every 12 months. Consult your healthcare professional especially if pregnant, nursing, or on medications.

Don’ts: Skip doses: Consistency is key, epigenetic shifts build over time. Overdo it: Adhere to the recommended dosage. Please consult a medical professional if you have any concerns. Ignore basics: Supplements amplify your healthspan but do not replace sleep, stress management, or medical care. Expect instant results: Patience yields the reversal.

Any other intricate details regarding the content, principle, or clinical outcome of the study that you might like to add in support of the product? One fascinating detail from the trial: Early adaptations (3 months) showed temporary accelerations in some clocks (e.g., DunedinPACE), likely as cells “ramp up” repair mechanisms before deceleration, mirroring how exercise fatigues muscles before building strength. Lifestyle

10

habits to cultivate to always be relevant! Handy tips for lost souls When people retire, many begin to fade fast as without a work routine and a purpose, they feel they are unable to keep in-step with the pace of life others follow. Psychologists caution that it is important to develop hobbies and maintain a good pace in life, no matter what your age, if an individual wants to maintain a steady self-actualization graph. As the famous American theologian Harry Emerson Fosdick said, “Don’t simply retire from something; have something to retire to,” every individual needs to reinvent him or herself. HEALTH gives you handy tips

1.

Keep to a routine So, when you do not have an alarm clock nudging you to wake up in time to catch the right train or bus to work, you still can maintain a routine of getting up early, planning a walk with friends, working out at the gym with a buddy and then, going for a swim, shower, a coffee morning and a game of chess later. That will give

December 2025 18

you something to look forward to each day and maintain a strong social connection. It is medical fact that people who maintain a healthy routine and relevance are less likely to suffer from dementia than those who don’t.

2.

Cultivate a passion Passion can be defined as a high level of interest or commitment to a hobby that inspires one with a purpose and gives the individual the wherewithal to push his or her limits. Bikram,S * 72, recently completed his long-cherished dream to trek to Everest Base camp as a septuagenarian. He told HEALTH “I was building my strength and stamina with regular treks and walks and also going for my periodic check-ups. I first tried trekking in and around Mumbai where I had moved from Dubai, then ventured out with my friends to Leh -Ladakh, three months ago. Finally, in October 2025, I fulfilled my wish of trekking to Everest Base camp. The journey was tough, but the smaller treks prepared me. The bond that we trekkers who went together formed, is strong and we feel triumphant.”

* Name changed on request

3.

Do robust financial planning Be it stocks, bonds, property portfolio or fixed deposits, make it a point to have a regular income through rentals, interests and profits that gives an individual the financial freedom to be able to maintain a good standard of living. Financial freedom equals to high self-esteem and eliminates the fear and insecurity that can trigger anxiety.

4.

Join a book circle It is always good to have friends who are on the same page as you. While electronic scrolling can be a lonely exercise, reading a book and discussing it with a circle of book lovers can be a rich and rewarding experience. It is amazing to get a plethora of different perspectives on a character or the climax of a plot and opens new windows in one’s own mind. Besides when one has a bunch of friends wanting one to read a book, the motivation to read it and also get to discuss it threadbare, is very piquing.

5.

Do not be a hypochondriac The older people get, the more they tend to imagine they are suffering from an illness. The slightest discomfort or bout of breathlessness, people often tune in to YouTube and every symptom discussed by the doctor seems to be similar to the one they have. Instead of giving in to these temptations, it is preferable to maintain a steady and periodic health check-up routine, every quarter. Once

you know your health parameters are fine, or you require some medicines to balance out a condition, then it is preferable to keep away from any temptation for hypochondria. Channel that energy into a more fruitful hobby.

6.

Don’t shun the company of youngsters One read about how Mr Ratan Tata’s closest friend was a young executive, Shantanu from his own organization who taught Mr Tata to be social media savvy while also sharing a common passion for love of animals. Most youngsters these days are digital natives who can teach an older person several new digital hacks and it is important for a senior person to not pooh-pooh that. Instead, enroll in an AI-learning course, soak the contemporary knowledge while hobnobbing with people who are at least a decade or two younger. It will help you see the world from their point of view and stimulate your grey cells.

7.

Learn something new It might be enrolling in piano classes, or learning tap dancing, or enrolling in a Spanish language class, anything that can take you out of your comfort zone and push your limits will break any monotony and add that extra pizzaz to your life.

8.

It is ok to be your age You might doze off in the middle

of a movie, or burp after a heavy meal, or pant harder while picking up something heavy. That is fine. Do not be in denial that you are past your prime. While it is not desirable to crib or moan about it and feel depressed, it is not right to think one is in the prime of youth. Be your age.

9.

Time to give back to society Not everything can be measured in terms of profit and loss. There is a far higher quotient in terms of soul satisfaction in giving back without expecting anything. Small gestures like donating one’s time by volunteering for a community project, teaching younger students for free about a subject that you are an expert in, giving away a small amount to a social cause… are some of the ways to be integrated well in a community. Giving back releases feel-good endorphins that go a long way in maintaining one’s happy state of mind.

Get spiritual Being spiritual does not mean getting into some holy mumbo jumbo. It can mean something as simple as giving oneself 20 minutes in the morning for meditation and deep breathing and 20 minutes each day listening to an audio book of a spiritual master who provides a solution to the esoteric mysteries of the world. It helps one gain a more sublime perspective on life. H

Gynetics

A bi-monthly column offering an informed insight into the latest cutting-edge advancements in gynecology and women’s health by experts on women’s reproductive health

Revisiting the year of tech innovations in

women’s reproductive health

Dr. Nahla Kazim

Consultant Reproductive Medicine and Infertility Founder, CEO of Kazim's Fertility Barza.

has spent the “Year of Community” charting a bold, future-facing roadmap for women’s health. Under the visionary patronage of Dr Nahla Kazim and Kazim’s Fertility Barza, threaded together the opportunities of scientific innovation while honestly acknowledging its ethical, regulatory, and equity challenges.

wearables, mRNA platforms, and AI– omics integration for BRCA carriers, yet all shared a unifying goal-earlier detection, smarter prevention, and more personalized, holistic reproductive care towards longevity.

Cutting-edge Opportunities and Merits A Year of Visionary Themes Across 2025, positioned women not as passive recipients of care but as informed partners in a rapidly evolving ecosystem of diagnostics, therapeutics, and data‑driven decision-making. Each issue showcased a different technological pillar: saliva testing, de‑extinction and CRISPR, Femtech December 2025 20

The February–March feature on saliva testing presented a non‑invasive, accessible gateway to monitoring hormones, infectious diseases, pregnancy complications, stress, and even cancer risk, opening the door to home-based, AI‑assisted diagnostics and telemedicine for women globally. The April–May and November– December articles extended this precision paradigm into the genome

and beyond, illustrating how CRISPR, multi‑omics, and AI can potentially correct inherited disorders, anticipate ovarian decline, and tailor fertility preservation, especially for BRCA carriers, far more accurately than age or single markers alone. The August–September and June–July issues then showed how Femtech, wearables, and mRNA therapeutics can transform daily life and long-term outcomes by continuously tracking physiology, refining timing for conception, managing menopause, and targeting cancers, infections, and complex reproductive conditions with unprecedented specificity. Together, these advances promise earlier intervention, improved IVF outcomes and safer preservation for

oncology patients, making sense of a new generation of proactive, individualized longevity strategies in women’s health.

At the same time, every issue underscored that innovation without safeguards can deepen risk or inequity. The salivatesting and Femtech articles highlighted variability in assay accuracy, lack of standardization, overreliance on unregulated apps, and serious privacy concerns around sensitive reproductive data. CRISPR‑based concepts raised the specter of offtarget effects, germline transmission, designer traits, and cross-border “ethics shopping” demanding robust global and UAE‑specific governance. The mRNA and AI–omics pieces stressed delivery challenges, long‑term safety uncertainties, fragmented development landscapes, and the risk that high-cost platforms may be accessible only to privileged women unless equity, Islamic bioethics, and public–private partnerships are consciously built in. Across all topics, consistently called for rigorous trials, transparent regulation, inclusive dialogue, and multidisciplinary counseling as the only ethical path from proof‑of‑concept to standard of care.

The Barza Mission and UAE Leadership Under Dr Nahla Kazim’s patronage, Kazim’s Fertility Barza emerged as

and premarital genetic screening to Thiqa‑covered fertility preservation for BRCA carriers and bioethically grounded oversight of gene editing and mRNA, can serve as a model where tradition and cutting-edge science reinforce rather than oppose each other. In this vision, technology is always anchored in dignity, informed consent, and cultural sensitivity, ensuring that precision medicine becomes not a luxury, but an expected standard for women in the region and beyond.

Moving Ahead with Enthusiasm As we turn the page from the Year of Community to the Year of the Family, shall continue to stand as a dynamic atlas of where women’s health is heading: from reactive visits to continuous, data-rich companionship; from fear of hidden risks to transparent, modelled conversations about procreation, fertility, cancer, and aging. The journey is only beginning; future editions will dive into next generation biosensors, organoids, fertility dashboards, reproductive longevity tools and yet-unimagined intersections between AI, biotechnology, and gynecology; always under the guiding mission and vision of Kazim’s Fertility Barza. will keep simplifying complex science into empowering stories that help every woman navigate safely her own reproductive future with confidence and curiosity. In doing so, it remains closely aligned with the UAE’s ambition to be a global benchmark in women’s health innovation, offering thought leaders fertile ground to test ideas, shape policy, and build solutions that resonate far beyond the region’s borders. One Platform, Two Surgeries, Countless Lives Changed

How Alcon’s - Unity VCS is redefining cataract and retinal surgery with speed, safety and smarter technology Conference (EPOMEC), in Dubai recently. Traditionally, cataract and vitreoretinal surgeries have required two separate consoles in the operating room. Unity VCS changes that equation entirely. “This is the first platform from Alcon that combines both cataract and vitreoretinal surgery into one single console,” explains Dr. Fadi. “Instead of managing two machines, surgeons now operate with one unified interface. That alone saves time and simplifies the entire setup.”

In operating theatres around the world, time and precision are everything. When it comes to eye surgery, where micromillimeters matter and nerves form the very fabric of vision, the balance between speed, control and safety can define outcomes for a lifetime. A new unified surgical platform, Unity VCS by Alcon, is now promising to transform that balance by bringing cataract and retinal surgery together on a single, intelligent system. December 2025 24

For leading ophthalmology experts Fadi AlSafadi Surgical Franchise Head and Cluster Manager for the Middle East and Africa and Dr. Ammar Safar, – Chief Medical Officer, Moorfields Hospital UAE the launch of Unity VCS marks not just another technological upgrade, but a meaningful leap in how surgeons operate and how patients recover. The experts were speaking to HEALTH on the sidelines of the Emirates Plastic Ophthalmology and Middle East

The benefits, he adds, go far beyond convenience. The platform operates with lower surgical energy for improved safety, enhanced illumination for retinal procedures, and an advanced TETRA spot laser that delivers multiple treatment points simultaneously. “If I had to describe Unity VCS in one word, it would be efficiency,” Dr. Fadi says.

Focusing on the Eye With more than 75 years of heritage, Alcon is the world’s largest eye-care company, serving 260+ million people annually with innovations

across cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disease and vision care. Dr. Ammar, a vitreoretinal surgeon and Chief Medical Officer at Moorfields, puts the clinical impact into perspective. “The retina a nerve tissue, is far less forgiving than the lens during cataract surgery,” he says. “Every movement must be precise. You need the right power, the right fluidics, and instruments that respond exactly as expected.” One of the game-changing elements in modern retina surgery has been the beveled tip of the vitrectomy probe, which allows surgeons to gently peel abnormal membranes without damaging healthy tissue. Unity VCS builds on this with improved fluidics and unprecedented cutting speeds - up to 30,000 cuts per minute.

A leap to efficiency “I trained on machines that operated at 600 cuts per minute,” Dr. Ammar recalls. “Today we are preparing to work at 30,000. That’s an extraordinary leap in safety and efficiency within one generation of technology.” Another major shift lies in the size and strength of instruments. Unity VCS supports ultra-small 27-gauge tools that create micro-incisions almost as fine as a needle prick. “With older 20-gauge systems, we had to place sutures after surgery,” Dr. Ammar explains. “With 27-gauge instruments, many cases now require no sutures at all. The wounds self-seal, recovery is faster, and hospital stays are shorter.” What makes Unity VCS distinctive is that these ultra-thin instruments now offer stiffness comparable to larger gauges. “That combination of flexibility and strength allows us to perform complex maneuvers inside the eye without risking damage to the tools or the retina itself,” he adds.

For patients, the benefits of advanced technology often translate into three powerful outcomes: shorter surgeries, quicker recovery, and better results. Unity VCS dramatically reduces surgical time by improving the speed of vitreous removal and combining priming and testing into a single step.

Time saving with smarter automation According to Dr. Fadi, setup time is reduced by nearly 22 percent, teardown by 42 percent, and approximately 1.5 minutes is saved per case through smarter automation. In high-volume hospitals, those minutes compound into hours saved each day. “A surgery that once took an hour can now be completed in 25 to 30 minutes,” Dr. Ammar notes. “That means less time under anesthesia for patients, shorter waiting lists, and the ability to treat many more people safely.” For hospital administrators, efficiency is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. Unified platforms like

Unity VCS not only reduce surgical time but also streamline logistics.

“Operating a single system instead of two drastically reduces workflow complexity,” Dr. Fadi explains. “From staff training to maintenance and inventory, everything becomes simpler. Dr. Fadi echoes this belief. “When surgeries become faster and safer, access to treatment improves. More patients can be helped in less time, and that benefits society.” As ophthalmology continues its rapid evolution, platforms like Unity VCS point toward a future where surgery is not only more advanced, but also more humane - minimally invasive, faster, safer, and deeply patient-centric. Nutrition

In Praise of Fat

Why pure palm oil deserves a second look For years, fat was cast as the villain of the modern plate. Supermarket shelves filled with “low-fat” labels, oil was used with suspicion, and butter became a nutritional outlaw. In the process, an entire generation of women learned to fear fat. Today, nutrition science is steadily correcting that narrative with a powerful message: fat is not the enemy. Misuse, imbalance and poor-quality fats are.

Dr Shady Labib

Nutritionist and behavioral change expert, and founder of Nutivate “We need to reframe the conversation around fat, especially for women. Fat isn’t just about calories or weight. It’s the foundation of hormone production, brain chemistry and reproductive function,” says Dr Shady Labib, nutritionist and behavioral change expert, and founder of Nutivate. “When women cut fat too low, they see it in their cycles, their mood and their energy levels.” Saumya Misra, Dietitian, CDE & Founder - Beyond Scale FZC, echoes the concern. “Many women today

December 2025 26

try to skip oil completely or go oilfree. The real key isn’t eliminating fat; it’s choosing the right type and the right portion.” Fat is a fundamental macronutrient. Without it, the body cannot absorb Vitamins A, D, E and K — key nutrients responsible for immunity, vision, bone health, hormone regulation and skin integrity. These

vitamins are fat-soluble; without dietary fat, they simply pass through the body unabsorbed. “Except for Vitamins B and C, all other vitamins need fat for proper absorption,” explains Saumya Misra. “Without that, women may struggle with poor immunity, brittle bones, sluggish hormones and dull skin, even if their diet otherwise seems ‘healthy’.”

“Low-fat diets were created for weight loss, not for women’s hormonal systems,” Dr Shady explains. “We are now seeing the long-term consequences: hormonal imbalances, mood disturbances and metabolic rigidity.”

Blood sugar, cravings and emotional eating Saumya Misra

Dietitian, CDE & Founder Beyond Scale FZC

Nearly 60 per cent of the human brain is made up of fat. Memory, emotional stability, nerve signalling and cognitive performance all depend on adequate fat intake. Fat also cushions vital organs, regulates body temperature and supplies long-lasting energy.

Unlike carbohydrates that cause sharp spikes and crashes, fats slow digestion and promote steady blood sugar. “Healthy fats help stabilize blood sugar, which in turn reduces cravings and emotional eating, something many women struggle with,” notes Saumya. “This is especially important for women with PCOS, thyroid issues or stressdriven eating patterns.” Omega-3 fats further strengthen this protective effect. “Omega-3s lower inflammation, crucial for women dealing with PCOS, joint

pain, chronic fatigue and even mood disorders,” she adds. Dr Shady reinforces this point: “Omega-3s also ease menstrual pain, support perimenopause and protect long-term brain health. Yet most women don’t get nearly enough.” Cholesterol, often viewed with fear, is a raw material for estrogen and progesterone. Zero-fat diets can quietly sabotage hormonal health. “Women’s hormones depend on healthy fats. Cholesterol is not the villain it’s made out to be it is literally the building block of estrogen and progesterone,” Saumya explains. “Very low-fat diets can worsen PMS, cause irregular cycles, fatigue and low libido.” Dr Shady adds, “When fat intake drops too low, we see ripple effects mood swings, cognitive fog, irregular cycles and metabolic slowdown. Fat isn’t something to fear. It’s something to understand.”

Palm oil: misunderstood more than most Few oils invite as much debate as palm oil. Emerging research now shows that natural, unrefined palm oil behaves comparably to other stable cooking fats when used in moderation. Dr Shady says: “Palm oil is one of the most heat-stable vegetable oils. It resists oxidation and maintains its structure during frying and roasting. It has a near 1:1 ratio of saturated to monounsaturated fats, making it far more stable than many seed oils.” Palm oil is also naturally free from trans fats and contains tocotrienols,

a potent form of Vitamin E associated with heart and brain protection. “When it is sustainably sourced and used intentionally, as part of a balanced fat profile, palm oil becomes a functional, efficient cooking fat. The problem was never the fat - it was always how it was misused,” Dr Shady adds. Saumya underlines the core principle: “Whether it’s ghee, olive oil or natural palm oil, the focus must always be on quality and portion control, not fear. Natural fats are safe in small, appropriate quantities.”

Palm oil, like many natural fruit oils, is often misunderstood,” says Dr Shady. “The health risks people worry about are associated with hydrogenated oils, which form trans fats during processing. Natural, unhydrogenated oils, including palm oil, do not have these harmful trans fats.”

December 2025 27

usually means 2–3 teaspoons of good-quality cooking fat per meal, along with about 2 tablespoons of nuts and seeds daily for essential fatty acids.”

The heart, inflammation and the real danger The true threat comes not from natural fats, but from trans fats and repeatedly reheated oils. “The real danger lies in trans fats and oxidized oils. They create deep inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, accelerating heart disease, insulin resistance and cellular aging,” warns Dr Shady. Dietary fat alone does not clog arteries. “It is the interaction of high sugar intake, chronic stress, sedentary habits and poor sleep that drives most modern heart disease — not fat in isolation,” he explains. Despite the renewed understanding of fats, both experts caution against excess. “The message shouldn’t be ‘eat less fat’. It should be ‘eat fat with purpose’,” says Dr Shady. “Women need a balance of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats - roughly onethird from each - to support hormonal harmony and metabolic flexibility.” Traditional Indian kitchens instinctively practised this balance through oil rotation — ghee for tempering, mustard for winter cooking, coconut oil in coastal regions, and sesame oil for digestion. “The goal is never zero fat and never excess. Every woman has a ‘sweet spot’,” says Saumya. “That

December 2025 28

Monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, avocado oil and groundnut oil play a crucial daily role. “They’re not just heart healthy. They support emotional resilience, blood sugar balance and reproductive health - truly the unsung heroes of women’s wellbeing,” says Dr Shady.

Gut health, weight plateaus and hidden benefits Healthy fats also quietly support the digestive system, an often-ignored factor in weight loss. “Good fats stimulate bile flow, improve digestion and enhance nutrient absorption. Poor fat intake can contribute to gut imbalance and stubborn weight plateaus,” explains Saumya. When digestion improves, inflammation drops — and with it, fatigue, bloating and metabolic slowdown.

Understanding the Different Types of Fat Saturated fats: Palm oil, coconut oil, dairy, meat Monounsaturated fats: Olive oil, groundnut oil, avocados Polyunsaturated fats: Sunflower, soybean, omega-3 rich fish oils Trans fats: Industrially processed, hydrogenated oils — strictly avoid

Debunking the biggest fat myths One of the most persistent myths is that eating fat automatically causes weight gain. Excess calories from any source lead to fat storage. Dietary fat, in the right amount, improves satiety and reduces overeating. Another outdated belief is that avoiding fat protects the heart or hormones. In truth, eliminating fat often backfires, slowing metabolism, worsening cravings and disrupting endocrine function. “If there’s one message, I would leave women with, it’s this: fat is not your enemy. It is your ally when you use it with knowledge, balance and intent,” says Dr Shady.

Smart, practical fat guidelines for daily cooking Choose stable oils for high heat: Palm oil, coconut oil and ghee Rotate your oils: Avoid using only one oil throughout the year Avoid reused oil: Reheating oil repeatedly creates toxic by-products Watch quantities: Around 2–3 teaspoons per meal Add good fats daily: 2 tablespoons of nuts and seeds Check labels: Completely avoid hydrogenated oils and hidden trans fats. Pair fats with whole foods: Vegetables, legumes and whole grains improve nutrient absorption “Food should nourish, not frighten us,” Dr Shady concludes. “When used intelligently, even traditionally debated oils like palm oil can be part of a balanced, health-supportive diet.” H

The Lifestyle NonNegotiables Every Woman Needs for Top Wellness Mitun De Sarkar, Clinical Dietitian and lifestyle expert in conversation with HEALTH, shares important pointers.

Women don’t struggle because of a lack of discipline. Women struggle because of a lack of bandwidth.

that are truly non-negotiable and these keep women hormonally balanced, metabolically strong, and emotionally resilient.

1. Blood Sugar Balance is The Hormonal Backbone

Most of the issues women faceweight gain, mood swings, cravings, fatigue, painful periods, sudden acne - all begin with blood sugar instability, even in women who do NOT have diabetes.

Did you know? Women today are navigating careers, motherhood, caregiving, emotional labor, and a world that demands more than ever. In chaos, our own health becomes the quietest voice in the room. After working with thousands of women over two decades, there are five crucial lifestyle pillars

December 2025 30

• A single high-sugar meal increases inflammation for up to 48 hours. • Blood sugar spikes elevate cortisol, destabilizing estrogen and progesterone. • Glucose crashes trigger cravings, irritability, and anxiety.

Simple Shifts That Work:

• Start meals with fiber and protein to reduce glucose spikes by up to 40 per cent • Avoid skipping breakfast to stabilize cortisol • Walk 10 minutes after meals • Eat within a 10–12 hour eating window

2. Sleep: A Woman’s Most Underrated Hormonal Therapy

Sleep is not cosmetic; it is hormonal medicine. Women who sleep less than 7 hours produce 30% less leptin and up to 50% more ghrelin, the hormone that triggers carb cravings.

Did You Know? During deep sleep:

• The gut rebuilds • The liver detoxifies • Hormones recalibrate • The brain clears inflammation through the lymphatic system

Sleep Rituals That Transform Health

• Sleep before 11 pm to maximize melatonin production • Keep your room cool and dark • Avoid late-night meals • Magnesium glycinate + omega-3 improve sleep quality

3. Stress & the Nervous System, The Silent Hormone Disruptor

Women’s bodies interpret emotional stress the same way they interpret danger. When fight-or-flight takes over, digestion stalls, hormones destabilize, and cravings intensify.

Did you know?

Chronic stress increases estrogen dominance, worsens PCOS and endometriosis, disrupts thyroid signaling, and elevates inflammation.

Daily Nervous System Regulators

• 5 minutes of breathwork lowers cortisol by 20–25% • 30 minutes of movement boosts serotonin naturally • Morning sunlight anchors circadian rhythm • A protein-rich breakfast stabilizes the nervous system

4. Gut Health: Where Immunity, Mood & Weight Begin

A woman’s gut reflects her lifestyle before anything else. Bloating, constipation, brain fog, acne, weight gain, and low energy are signs of gut imbalance, not random symptoms.

Did you know?

produced in the gut • 90% of immunity lives in the gut • Poor gut health drives inflammation and hormone imbalance

Gut-Healing Habits

• 25–35g fiber daily • One fermented food daily • Reduce artificial sweeteners— they damage gut lining

Chew slowly; digestion begins in the mouth

• Add polyphenols and antioxidants such as berries, leafy greens, matcha & turmeric to your meals.

5. Muscle Health, A Woman’s True Anti-aging Advantage

Muscle is the most powerful Anti-aging tool women have—and the most neglected. After age 35, women naturally lose 3–8% of muscle per decade.

Did You Know?

Loss of muscle leads to slower metabolism, increased fat storage, poor posture, joint pain, fatigue, and higher fracture risk.

How to Build Metabolic Muscle: • Strength train 2–3 times a week • Aim for 1–1.2g protein per kg body weight • Prioritize Vitamin D, magnesium, omega-3 • Include posture and core training. H

• 70% of serotonin is

Early Detection:

The One Choice That Changes Everything for Women Facing Breast Cancer Dr Verushka Mansukhani, Specialist General Surgeon and Breast Surgeon at Prime Healthcare Group, Dubai emphasizes on why every woman must opt for preventive screening for breast cancer

Dr Verushka Mansukhani

Breast cancer is a diagnosis that touches almost every family, says Dr. Verushka, “As a Breast Cancer surgeon, I meet women every day who arrive carrying a mix of fear, strength, hope, and uncertainty. What years of practice has taught me is simple but profound truth - the stage at which breast cancer is detected can completely transform a woman’s life. Early detection doesn’t just improve outcomes—it reshapes the entire journey.”

When breast cancer is detected in Stage 0- Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) even before it becomes cancer, treatment is gentler, survival is extraordinarily high, and a woman’s quality of life remains largely unchanged. But when disease is detected late, everything becomes more difficult: the treatment, the emotional burden, the time away from family, the physical recovery. The difference between these two paths often comes down to something as simple as a yearly mammogram points out Dr Verushka

Understanding Stage 0: A Life-Saving Window One of the most powerful examples of early detection is December 2025 32

Stage 0 breast cancer, is in the case of DCIS. This isn’t invasive cancer yet—it’s the earliest, pre-cancerous form where abnormal cells remain confined to the milk ducts and have not spread. “Women diagnosed at Stage 0 often feel scared at first, but I remind them of this hopeful truth-Stage 0 is almost always curable. It is the best-case scenario of a breast cancer diagnosis,” says Dr Verushka. Importantly, most Stage 0 cases are found only because of routine mammograms. These women feel completely normal. They have no lumps, no symptoms, nothing to alert them. Imaging picks up subtle calcifications long before anything becomes dangerous. This is the power of early screening—it detects disease before life ever feels interrupted.

The Emotional Weight of Timing In the clinic, doctors usually see two contrasting moments. A woman comes in for her routine mammogram. It shows something tiny, invisible to touch. Further tests reveal Stage 0 or a very small Stage 1 cancer. The doctor explains that the tumor was caught early. That incites a typical response The woman’s shoulders drop. Her breathing slows. Relief replaces fear. Her life continues almost unchanged. Another woman comes in after noticing a lump, months earlier but waiting out of fear or denial. Her diagnosis is advanced. Dr Verushka adds, “When we discuss treatment, she often whispers: ‘I wish I had come earlier’. These moments—full of humanity and vulnerability—are why screening matters. Timing isn’t just medical; it carries emotional weight, financial weight, and family weight.”

What Every Woman Should Be Doing?

Monthly Self-Examination Take a few quiet minutes each month to know what your normal feels like. Early changes are subtle, and familiarity is your best tool. Clinical Breast Examination • Ages 20–39: once every 2–3 years

• Age 40 and above: annually A trained eye and experienced hands can detect what you might overlook.

Annual Mammograms This is the single most important step. • Start at age 40

• Start earlier (30–35) if you have family history or genetic risks Mammograms detect Stage 0 and early-stage cancers that cannot be felt. They save lives silently.

Symptoms That Should Never Be Ignored Even without pain, women should seek evaluation for: • A new lump • A change in breast shape or contour • Dimpling of the skin • Nipple inversion or discharge • Redness, swelling, or persistent rash Not all changes mean cancer— but delaying evaluation is what turns treatable conditions into difficult ones.

Breaking the Barriers Women Face Women often postpone screening because they believe: ‘I feel fine’. ‘No one in my family had it’. ‘I’m too busy right now’. Or simply: ‘I’m scared’.

Fear is understandable, but it should never decide your future.

Many women diagnosed with breast cancer—including Stage 0—have no family history at all. And they feel perfectly healthy.

Awareness is empowering. Action is life changing. We can cast a bold new narrative for women everywhere When breast cancer or pre-cancer is caught early: • Treatment is shorter and simpler • The chances of keeping the breast are higher • Chemotherapy is often avoided • Recovery is faster • Emotional burden is lighter • Survival rates approach 100% for Stage 0 and over 95% for Stage 1 These outcomes are not luck. They are the result of timely detection.

A Message to Every Woman Dr Verushka who deals with hundreds of women going through the psychological toll of facing breast cancer has one clear message straight from her heart. “I want to tell every woman, your health is not a burden—it is your strength, your independence, your future. Give it priority. Book your screening. Encourage your mother, sister, daughter, and friends to do the same. Early detection, especially catching Stage 0 disease, gives women the chance to stay ahead of cancer instead of reacting to it. It lets us rewrite the breast cancer story into one of empowerment, not fear. And that is a narrative every woman deserves.” H

Beyond Pink

Warrior first person An accomplished professional, entrepreneur, mother and wife, Shirrin Sarkaree, a long-time resident of Dubai, overcame her demons and combated breast cancer with courage and conviction because she believes life is beautiful and must be celebrated no matter what.

“When I first heard the words “you have breast cancer,” fear became a shadow that followed me everywhere. My mind was blank. It wasn’t just fear of treatment — it was fear of the unknown, fear of pain, fear of losing control of my life and my body.

My demons whispered at night: Why me? Will I get through this? Will I still be me on the other side? Over time, I realised something important - fear does not disappear, but courage grows bigger. And I learned to feed the courage, not the fear.

I overcame my fear in small steps: I allowed myself to feel

December 2025 34

word Cancer but called it a lump. She kept assuring me that she would get me well very soon. My husband Rumi was my biggest support system always by my side and being positive throughout, so was our son and daughter. God bless them all. My demons were loud, but my support was louder. I stopped negotiating with fear. Instead of “what if I don’t make it,” I began asking, “What if I come out stronger? What if this becomes my story of light?”

And it did. everything. I didn’t fight my tears. I let them come. Acceptance was my first form of bravery. I decided I would participate in my healing. Not just physically emotionally but also spiritually. I asked questions, Chat GP was my best friend, understood my treatment, became part of the process instead of a victim of it. I built a circle of love - of doctors, family, faith, crystals, prayers, and self-love. Dr Verushka Mansukhani, General Surgeon at Prime Health Care Group, was my biggest supporter. From Day 1, I never used the

I was always positive from day one of my treatment and even told my oncologist on the first day of my chemotherapy, that in four months around my birthday, July 28, I would be cancer free, and I was. My surgery was on August 2, 2025, and it was very successful. I was declared cancer free. Cancer tried to break me, but it also showed me my own strength. Today, I think of myself not just a survivor, but a voice. I know that the way out of fear is not to run from it, but to walk through it with open eyes, steady breath, and faith in one more sunrise.

My demons didn’t disappear I learned to sit with them — and eventually, they sat quietly beside my courage. If I had to offer advice to anyone walking the path I walked, I would say this:

Be gentle with yourself You are fighting a battle no one can see from the outside. Healing isn’t only medical — it’s emotional, mental, and spiritual.

You don’t have to be strong every minute. Strength is also in the tears, rest, and asking for help.

Don’t travel this road alone Lean on your people — family, friends, support groups, (honestly, I kept my illness to myself and a handful of family and friends- no support groups) doctors. Allow them to hold you when you feel like falling. There is power in letting yourself be cared for.

Stay informed — knowledge reduces fear Understand your treatment, ask questions, take notes. When you know what is happening inside your body, you feel less controlled and more in your power.

Celebrate small victories. A day without nausea, a walk to the garden, laughter with your child — these moments matter. Healing isn’t a straight line, but every tiny step forward is progress.

Let hope breathe, even on dark days. You may not feel strong every day, and that’s okay. But hold onto one belief — there is life beyond cancer. There is joy, laughter and sunrise waiting. Above all, I would tell them this- Cancer may change parts of you, but it does not take away your spirit. You are more than the disease, more than the pain, more than the fear. You are a survivor in progress — fierce, beautiful, and still rising. Above all be positive. Continue whatever you are doing. If there is one thing I want everyone to remember, it is thisBreast cancer may shake your

world, but it cannot take away your light unless you let it. You will fall, but you will rise. You will cry, but you will also laugh again — and louder. Healing isn’t about being fearless; it’s about walking forward even with fear beside you. Believe in tomorrow, trust your body, and hold onto hope — because recovery is not only possible, but also waiting for you. Be thankful to your body to respond so well to your treatment.

Remember Your thoughts shape your energy, and your energy shapes your health. A body filled with hope heals. So today give yourself permission to believe again and be healed. I survived not because I was never afraid, but because I chose myself — every single day. Healing Affirmation May we walk with courage in our hearts, May hope be our companion. And may we always remember — even in darkness, there is light inside us.”

When Food Becomes a Refuge Understanding binge eating, and learning how to break the cycle with compassion, not control

Most of us have overeaten at some point - at a celebration, a holiday meal, or during a stressful week. But binge eating is something very different. It is not about occasional indulgence or a lack of discipline. It is a repeated, distressing pattern that quietly affects many people, often in silence and shame. “Binge eating refers to repeated episodes where a person eats a large amount of food in a short period of time, feels a loss of control, and

Lovely Ranganath

experiences guilt, shame, or emotional distress afterward,” explains Lovely Ranganath, MSc (Food Science & Nutrition), Evidence Based Nutrition Educator and Consultant, and Founder of Good Food Guru. Crucially, she points out, “What counts as a ‘large amount’ varies from person to person. It’s not about numbers. It’s about the experience.”

And that experience, when repeated, can take a serious toll on both body and mind.

Food becomes both the comfort and the source of pain; a cycle that feels impossible to escape.

Red Alert!

Why binge eating is rarely about food

When binge eating becomes frequent, the physical consequences begin to show. Repeated episodes often mean consuming far more energy than the body needs over time, increasing the risk of weight gain and obesity. Rapid eating and large quantities can cause sharp spikes and crashes in blood sugar, which may contribute to insulin resistance in the long run.

From a clinical and practical perspective, binge eating is almost never just about appetite or cravings. “It’s usually linked to emotional overwhelm or chronic stress, restrictive dieting or skipping meals, labelling foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, and using food to cope with difficult emotions,” says Lovely.

Digestive discomfort is common too, from bloating, acid reflux, to stomach pain and discomfort especially when food is eaten quickly and well beyond fullness. “The body swings between overeating and restriction, leaving people feeling tired and out of sync,” says Lovely. It becomes a cycle where the body never quite finds balance.

Strict food rules can backfire. When foods are demonised, eating them later can trigger guilt and a sense of failure, and fuel for a binge. In these moments, food offers temporary relief or numbness, but it doesn’t solve the underlying issue. Once the comfort fades, the emotional pain returns, often stronger than before.

While the physical effects matter, the emotional fallout of binge eating is often far more distressing. Persistent guilt and shame can chip away at self-worth. Many people begin to fear food or lose trust in their own bodies. Social situations involving meals may trigger anxiety, and negative self-talk becomes a constant companion.

One of the biggest myths around binge eating is that it can be fixed with more self-control. “Avoiding binge eating is not about willpower. It’s about support, structure, and emotional skills,” Ranganath stresses.

“Over time, emotional distress leads to binge eating, which then increases emotional distress,” Lovely explains.

Eating regular, balanced meals is a powerful first step. Skipping meals or long gaps between eating can biologically increase the urge to binge later. Reducing extreme restrictions also matters. When all foods are allowed, the urgency and

So, what helps?

obsession around certain foods begins to fade. Slowing down while eating, particularly without screens or distractions, helps people reconnect with hunger, fullness, and satisfaction cues that often get lost in binge cycles. Equally important is building emotional coping skills. Learning ways to manage stress, anxiety, boredom, or sadness without turning to food can be transformative. For some, self-help strategies may not be enough, and that is not a failure. “If binge eating feels frequent, distressing, or out of control, speaking to a qualified dietitian or a mental health professional experienced in eating behaviours is strongly recommended,” says Lovely, cautioning against self-diagnosis. Evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), nutrition counselling, and mental health support have been shown to significantly reduce binge eating and improve quality of life. Early intervention can prevent long-term physical and emotional consequences.

Perhaps the most important shift is reframing how we see binge eating itself. “Binge eating is not a lack of discipline. It is a signal that the body and mind need support,” says Lovely. With the right guidance, a compassionate mindset, and evidence-based care, recovery is not only possible, but it can also be life-changing. H December 2025 39

Beyond Pink roots for women’s health

Bringing in oncologists, mental, nutritional and reproductive health experts, cancer warriors and the community together for a much-needed panel discussion, Beyond Pink, held on November 27, organized by Thumbay media, succeeded in creating an educative buzz on women’s allround health.

December 2025 40

The two-hour event, moderated by eminent journalist Manju Ramanan drew out not just cancer survivors but women and men from all nationalities and walks of life. The highlight of the evening was the keynote address by globally acclaimed actress and author Lisa Ray, who not only shared her journey of overcoming multiple myeloma but also rallied for cause of

women’s post-menopausal health, calling for removing the earlier stigma associated with hormone therapy. “Oncologist and gynecologists around the world have now accepted that HRT does not cause cancer, and more women must know about this,” she said while stressing on the urgency of including women in all clinical studies.

Beyond Pink delivered a simple message – women’s health deserves attention, community conversation and support. The success of the event reaffirmed that women’s well being is not a luxury and every woman deserves the tools, knowledge and support to take charge of her life.

Ask the Experts

Dr Adel Al Sisi

Specialist in critical care and emergency medicine, Chief Medical Officer and Chair of ICU at Prime Healthcare Group, UAE

What is ICU psychosis and how do you handle patients in ICU suffering from this? A: When a patient is admitted for an acute medical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), sometimes the isolation from family, the beeping monitors, the prolonged rest hours that alter circadian rhythms or sleep cycles, plus strong the medications as well as the pain can trigger delirium, hallucination, agitation, withdrawal among other symptoms. So, a patient must deal with many external stimuli that he normally does not deal with at home. These typically include:

Sensory Issues: Overload (alarms) or deprivation (isolation). Sleep Deprivation: Constant interruptions, noise, light. Medications: Sedatives, anticholinergics.

Immobility & Pain: Being restrained or

unable to move.

Physiological Stress: Infections,

dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, organ failure.

December 2025 42

The most important aspect is to recognize and diagnose this when we see the patient behaving in this manner. We involve the ICU team and the family to mitigate the symptoms. We review the patient’s medications and try and single out drugs that might be triggering delirium, we encourage the family to come visit the patient so that he or she does not feel isolated. We also encourage the patient, if his vitals are stable, to walk around a bit and get his orientation right. We try and optimize his sleep- wake cycles and minimize medications and any other stimulants that might be triggering this behaviour. We review his diet to make sure his nutrition is right. If there is a procedure a patient needs such as dialysis, we have to introduce that to reduce chances of delirium and psychosis. If the patient is conscious, we can also introduce a mental health specialist to counsel him or in extreme cases introduce psychotic drugs to relieve him. But ICU psychosis is very real and a challenge which any ICU doctor has to recognize, identify and be ready to intervene and resolve.

The current UAE weather that has triggered dust, fall in temperature, rain, including dampness is likely to trigger allergies, viral infections and in general, winter blues. How can people take precautions? The air is thick with dust and allergens after thunderstorm and rains, and we need to take precautions to prevent a viral build-up. I would advise the following: • Close windows during dust storms and switch air-conditioning to recirculate mode. • Clean or replace AC filters monthly as they collect dust that triggers allergies. • A daily saline nasal rinse helps clear irritants naturally.

Viral Prevention Winter brings increased social activity after months spent indoors avoiding heat. More gatherings and crowded events mean greater viral exposure. • Wash hands frequently, particularly in public spaces. The temperature contrast between cool evenings and air-conditioned venues weakens

immunity. Dress in layers to help your body adjust. • Stay well-hydrated, as our dry climate affects respiratory defences. • Regular exercise improves immunity.

Managing Dampness Rainfall brings unaccustomed humidity. Ventilate bathrooms properly and use dehumidifiers where needed. Damp environments promote mould growth, triggering allergic responses in susceptible individuals.

Supporting Mental wellbeing Pleasant weather typically improves mood, but dust storms and overcast days can still affect it. Maintain regular physical activity and consistent sleep schedules. Social connections help. Don’t isolate yourself during grey weather spells.

When to Seek Medical Care Consult a doctor if allergies persist beyond one week, you develop persistent fever or cough, or if low mood interferes with daily functioning.

Protection Begins at Home: Collective Effort to Prevent RSV in Children

Sanofi representatives and healthcare experts at the “Protection Begins at Home” media briefing, emphasizing the collective effort to prevent Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infections in children through community awareness and preventive action.

Sanofi held a press briefing to create awareness about Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) on October 10, 2025, in Dubai . RSV is a common seasonal illness that causes respiratory issues in infants worldwide. Hospitals often face high pressure due to the volume of young children requiring care and treatment for breathing difficulties, which is a primary concern for their families. Dr. Markus Knuf, Head of the Children’s Hospital in Worms, Germany, and Paediatric Infectious

December 2025 44

Disease Consultant at the University of Mainz, emphasised that enhanced awareness, preventive action, and early intervention have proven to be remarkably effective in Germany. He added that through these concerted measures, the country achieved an 80 per cent reduction in RSV-related hospital admissions compared to the previous season, which stands as clear evidence that early awareness plays a major role in protecting children’s health. In the UAE, Dr. Eslam El Baroudy, Professor and Paediatric Consultant at Cairo University and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, asserted that RSV prevention extends beyond medical treatment, beginning within homes and communities. He noted that simple daily habits, such as regular handwashing and disinfecting children’s toys, can

significantly lower the risk of infection. Dr. El Baroudy further underlined the significance of educating parents and teachers to reduce transmission and prevent complications among children. Baptiste de Clarens, General Manager for the Greater Gulf, Vaccines at Sanofi, reaffirmed the company’s robust collaboration with health experts and institutions across the UAE to strengthen preventive practices and enhance public awareness. He added that these efforts ensure that every child enters the new season healthier, safer, and better protected. Together, these initiatives demonstrate the critical importance of community education and consistent preventive habits in safeguarding children’s well-being, reducing the burden on healthcare systems, and fostering a healthier and resilient society.
