IVF and Assisted Reproduction Why UAE

is the leading medical tourism destination for it?

Scientific research, rapid advance in technology, AI innovation, supportive government policies, the availability of conducive regulation, combined with empathy and compassion in equal proportions, has helped UAE become the leading destination for In Vitro Fertilization and Assisted Reproduction through the painstaking work of pioneers in this field in the last one decade.

When 17-year-old Sara (name changed for privacy) was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, her family’s world turned upside down. Her mother worried about chemotherapy, hair loss, and recovery. But what she hadn’t considereduntil the doctors raised it - was fertility. At just 17, Sara was now at risk of losing her chance to be a mother someday.

Thanks to a pioneering procedure at a reputed Fertility Center in the UAE, Sara underwent a transabdominal egg retrieval, and had her eggs cryopreserved. Within weeks, 25 of her oocytes were safely frozen, preserving her future hopes of motherhood before cancer treatment began.

Over the years, pioneering fertility and assisted reproduction specialists in the UAE such as Dr. Michael Fakih, Dr. Nahla Kazim, Dr. Pankaj Srivastava, Dr. Mazen Dayeh and Dr. Partha Das, have worked tirelessly in this field, not just spearheading innovations and tweaking methodology, but introducing new techniques and practices and above all, extending a compassionate and empathetic eco-system for young couples looking for assistance in starting their families. The years of patient work is the reason why UAE, particularly Dubai, has turned out to be the leading center for fertility and assisted reproduction, featuring as the No 1 medical tourism for this stream of medicine.

of experts in the reproductive health field.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) has advanced rapidly in the UAE. Today, the UAE performs 15,000–16,000 IVF cycles per year, with success rates significantly higher than Europe’s 40% success rate.

Over 25 fertility centers operate in the UAE, including Tawam Fertility Center, Dubai Gynecology and Fertility Center, Fakih IVF, First Fertility, Best Life Fertility, Bourn Hall Fertility Centre, Orchid Fertility and Conceive Fertility Hospital, to name a few.

Sara’s story isn’t just about medical innovation - it highlights a growing, urgent issue: how to safeguard fertility in the face of disease,

Why UAE leads in IVF ?

Dr Michael Fakih a leading pioneer of IVF in the UAE commented on the three decades of evolution in this field .

“When we first introduced IVF in the country, the focus was primarily on establishing safe, effective treatment

treatment, or the biological clock.

In the last decade the UAE has emerged as a regional and global leader in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), thanks to the gradual yet constant innovation

pathways. Today, the UAE has become an international destination where couples from all over the world seek care. This transformation is the result of several key factors: the government’s commitment to healthcare excellence, investment in world-class infrastructure, and the country’s openness to adopting innovation rapidly. At Fakih IVF, we combined cutting-edge science with compassionate care, and this model has set the benchmark for others in the region. The UAE’s reputation as a medical tourism destination is built not only on success rates but also on patient experience and trust, two aspects we have prioritized since day one.”

He further added . “The forward thinking regulatory framework of the government enabled us to

Many of these clinics also offer genetic testing of embryos (PGT-A and PGT-M) to select healthy embryos and reduce the risk of inherited diseases, especially for cancer patients carrying genetic mutations like BRCA1/2.

introduce innovations such as pre-implantation genetic testing, fertility preservation, and most recently, AI-assisted sperm detection. The partnership between medical pioneers and supportive authorities has been instrumental in positioning the UAE as a leader in reproductive medicine.

“The UAE has become a place where science, compassion, and innovation meet to give families the chance to grow. For me, the greatest achievement is not just in the thousands of successful deliveries, but in the legacy of creating an ecosystem where future generations of doctors and scientists can continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in assisted reproduction,” he concluded.

IVF and ART top the list in Medical Tourism

The UAE In Vitro Fertilization market size was valued at USD 0.31 billion in 2024 and is estimated to surpass USD 0.43 billion by 2030. Moreover, this industry is also projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 5.60 per cent during the forecast period –from 2025-2030.

One of the most defining trends influencing the UAE IVF market size and growth is the shift from conventional IVF cycles to specialized procedures such as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), offering enhanced success rates and customization. This clinical personalization has been pivotal in attracting both local patients and international fertility tourists. Furthermore, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in embryo selection and lab automation is driving successful outcomes and operational efficiency in clinics across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Why is IVF a rising trend?

Among the major contributors to the growth of this sector is the rising infertility cases in both genders. Stress, obesity, lifestyle changes that has given rise to low sperm count among men and health issues such as polycystic ovaries among other health issues, the pushing back of the average

marriage age have significantly impacted the market growth of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in the UAE.

According to the United Nations World Population Prospects, the fertility rate for the UAE was 1.37 births per woman in 2022, which declined further to 1.35 births per woman in both 2023 and 2024. This continued downward trend highlights a persistent decrease in fertility rates in the country making this issue a top national priority.

Another major factor has been the active participation of women in the work force, growing from 28% to over 55% by 2023— has contributed to increased infertility cases, largely due to lifestyle-related changes and a higher prevalence of chronic ailments associated with delayed childbearing and workrelated stress.

Moreover, the UAE is one of the few countries that allows gender recognition before pregnancy to maintain the family balance in siblings’ genders. The rising technological advancements to detect gender, as well as any other hereditary & chromosomal disorder, would further augment the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) market in the forecasted years. Further, the cost-effective IVF procedures, which can also be availed through loans taken from public & private banks along with the EMI options provided by the hospitals & fertility centers, would also contributes to the growth of the IVF market.

There are several other factors contributing to the rise and sophisticated evolution of ART and IVF.

Among other important factors contributing to delayed marriage and family is the availability of new fertility preservation

techniques. This has helped the younger generation postpone their marriages and work towards planning it at an opportune time where fertility preservation has been a great game changer. Over the years the diversity in the population, that is multinational, multiracial, multicultural, has thrown in yet another interesting mix to the growing fertility challenge.

Dr Nahla Kazim, leading reproductive medicine expert, expresses appreciation for how UAE has risen to the complex challenge. “As an Emirati physician who has witnessed the evolution of reproductive medicine firsthand, I am filled with immense pride at the UAE’s remarkable transformation into a global leader in fertility care. What was once a journey that required many to travel abroad for advanced treatment has now become a destination for hope, drawing patients from across the world to our state-of-the-art facilities.

This paradigm shift is a testament to our nation’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to healthcare innovation. We have not only embraced but have also become pioneers in adopting cutting-edge Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), from advanced genetic screening to revolutionary regenerative medicine. The integration of Artificial Intelligence, Genomics and other digital health technologies is

further personalizing patient care, enhancing success rates, and making the dream of parenthood a reality for more couples than ever before.

Beyond technology, our approach has become profoundly more holistic and patient-centric. We are creating a compassionate ecosystem of care that addresses the emotional and psychological well-being of our patients, fostering a culture of openness and support. Initiatives like Kazim’s Fertility Barza are at the heart of this movement, empowering our community with knowledge and breaking down cultural barriers.

The UAE’s fertility landscape is no longer just about providing services; it’s about creating life, hope, and a legacy of excellence for generations to come. We are building the future of our nation, one healthy baby at a time.”

Dr. Pankaj Srivastava, Medical Director of Conceive, the Gynecology and Fertility Hospital, UAE and one of the leading pioneers in fertility and reproductive medicine, seconds the ideas shared by Dr Kazim and credits the unique vision of the rulers. He says, “UAE and Dubai’s greatest advantage has been that we have always been the first, off the block. The Dubai Government realized the

importance and future potential of ART in 1990 and invited Prof Craft and myself to open the first IVF center in the Gulf region. None of the other countries had a Fertility facility at that time. When we opened the doors of Dubai fertility center in July 1991, we began to receive patients from Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Iran and Oman. The fact that Dubai was first has always given us a big advantage. That, and the opening of Dubai as a tourism hub, encouraged people from the subcontinent and east Africa to use the ART facilities here. As new innovations emerged, Dubai introduced them into clinical practice so that facilities on par with the best in the world became available here. The location, infrastructure and presence of top-notch facilities has made Dubai the go to place for Fertility tourism. The monitoring of ethical practices by the government has also encouraged trust in the fertility services offered,” concluded Dr. Pankaj.

Fertility preservation techniques, a game-changer

Fertility preservation techniques have been a harbinger of hope and happiness for cancer survivors too. Over the last decade, the UAE has seen a rise in cancer cases. According to the UAE National Cancer Registry (2021), 5,830 new cancer cases were diagnosed, with 55% of cases in women. The most common cancer among women is breast cancer, followed by thyroid, colorectal, uterine, cervical, and ovarian cancers.

Modern cancer treatments have significantly improved survival rates. For instance, if a young woman is diagnosed with localized (early-stage) breast cancer, her 5-year survival rate is close to 99. However, there’s a catch: these

treatments often damage fertility. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can impair ovaries and uterus, sometimes causing irreversible infertility. Research suggests that conception rates drop by 30–50% after gonadotoxic treatments, and survivors face higher risks of miscarriage, preterm labor, and complications during delivery.

The dilemma is clear: how can patients fight for their lives without sacrificing the possibility of new life?

For both cancer patients and those facing non-cancer conditions like lupus, thalassemia, or sickle cell anemia - where treatments may damage reproductive organs - fertility preservation is becoming essential. In the UAE, fertility preservation is no longer experimental; it’s part of mainstream medical care.

Dr. Partha Sarathi Das, Medical Director and consultant in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Orchid IVF and Fertility Centre - Dubai, has an interesting take. He thinks introduction of innovative cutting-edge technology coupled with the government’s pro active policies and a compassionate healing touch have empowered and augmented this sector.

“Dr Partha Das, elaborated, “In just two decades, the UAE has grown into one of the world’s leading destinations for fertility care, and to me, the single most important

driver has been the vision of the country’s leadership. They laid the foundation for a healthcare system where advanced infrastructure, progressive regulations, and patient safety are not just priorities but standards. This forward-looking approach has attracted specialists and technologies from across the globe, making the UAE a true hub for innovation in reproductive medicine.

"At Orchid, we have experienced this transformation up close. Since opening in 2017, we’ve seen tremendous growth, and today almost half of our patients come from outside the UAE. They are drawn not only by the high success rates but also by the trust that the country has built internationally in this field. Technology has been at the heart of these advances.

Non-invasive embryo testing, timelapse imaging, and microfluidic sperm selection are revolutionizing outcomes by helping us identify the healthiest embryos and mimic nature’s own selection process. Artificial intelligence is now adding another powerful dimensionenabling more accurate embryo assessment, refining treatment protocols, and improving decisionmaking. The UAE has been quick to adopt these innovations, ensuring patients benefit from the very latest advancements." concluded Dr Partha Das.

agrees with all the pioneers when he says, “Infertility is not just a medical condition—it is an emotional journey filled with longing, courage, and resilience. Behind every couple lies a story of dreams deferred yet never abandoned. At our IVF clinic, we walk this journey alongside them, armed with compassion and the most advanced treatments modern science can offer.

"For over two decades, I dedicated my life to this cause. Each smile on a parent’s face, each cry of a newborn, is a reminder that perseverance and innovation can turn despair into joy. With techniques like IVF, IUI, hormonal therapies, and advanced surgeries, we continue to transform challenges into miracles. Every baby born through these treatments is more than just a success, it is proof that hope, faith, and science together can achieve the unimaginable," he said.

Let’s take a look at the gender specific methods of fertility preservation techniques available in the UAE.

For Women: Egg and Embryo Freezing

The first-line fertility preservation options for women are:

Embryo freezing: Suitable for married women, this involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, retrieving them, fertilizing them with the husband’s sperm, and freezing the resulting embryos.

Egg freezing: For unmarried women or those without a partner, mature eggs are retrieved and frozen for future use.

Both procedures require controlled ovarian stimulation using hormone injections, a process that takes 10–14 days. Techniques like random-start and dual-phase stimulation now allow patients to begin treatment at any point in the menstrual cycle, reducing delays before urgent cancer therapy.

Newer vitrification methods ensure egg and embryo survival rates of over 90%, and implantation rates of up to 80%. However, success depends heavily on age. Women under 35 have a 60% chance of live birth from 10 frozen eggs, but the probability drops to 30% in women over 35.

Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation

This involves removing and freezing slices of ovarian tissue before treatment. The tissue can later be reimplanted, restoring fertility and hormone function. While globally over 100 live births have resulted from this method, there’s no official report of ovarian tissue cryopreservation or transplantation in the UAE yet. Risks include potential reintroduction of cancer cells, especially in ovarian or blood cancers.

In Vitro Maturation (IVM)

For women who can’t delay treatment, IVM offers an alternative. Immature eggs are collected without or minimal ovarian stimulation, and frozen. While promising, IVM carries lower success rates compared to conventional IVF and is still under careful evaluation in the UAE.

Oophoropexy and GnRH Agonists

In cases of pelvic radiotherapy, the ovaries can be surgically moved away from the radiation field (Oophoropexy). Medical protection using GnRH agonists may reduce the risk of ovarian damage during chemotherapy, but this is not a standalone fertility solution and is less effective for radiotherapy.

For Men: Sperm Cryopreservation

Male fertility preservation is more straightforward. Sperm banking - collecting and freezing sperm before cancer treatment - has been available in the UAE since the 1990s. For boys and men unable to produce a sample naturally, options include electroejaculation, surgical sperm extraction, and testicular tissue cryopreservation.

In one recent case in the US, a child was born in 2022 from sperm frozen 26 years earlier. Similarly, in the UAE, a 15-yearold boy underwent successful sperm cryopreservation at a Fertility Center in the UAE - a hopeful milestone for adolescent male cancer patients.

IVF in the UAE: A Rapidly Growing Landscape. Ethical and Medical Considerations

While technology has advanced, ethical considerations remain complex. Physicians must balance urgency - cancer treatment cannot be delayed - with the patient’s reproductive hopes.

Doctors also caution that cancer itself may reduce fertility, even before treatment starts. Sperm and egg quality can be compromised by the disease, making early consultation crucial.

Additionally, older women face steeper challenges. Egg quality declines with age, and women over 40 may need to freeze over 40 eggs to have a good chance of future pregnancy - a feat often impossible for cancer patients on tight treatment timelines.

Experts agree that oncofertility care requires a multidisciplinary team: oncologists, reproductive

endocrinologists, gynecologists, urologists, genetic counselors, and mental health professionals must work together. A national onco fertility network or standardized referral protocols are also a must.

There’s also a need for better public awareness. Many patients and families remain unaware of fertility preservation until it’s too late. Clinics and hospitals must integrate fertility counseling at the time of cancer diagnosis, not afterwards.

With world-class infrastructure, competitive IVF success rates, and medical tourism on the rise, the UAE is positioning itself as a fertility hub for the Middle East. Innovations like gender selection (allowed under UAE law) and cuttingedge genetic screening attract international patients. However, experts urge caution against overcommercialization. Transparency, ethical practice, and patient-centered care must remain at the heart of fertility services.

For patients like Sara, fertility preservation offers more than just medical intervention - it provides hope. In the face of life-threatening illness, it ensures that the dream of parenthood isn’t lost along the way.

Dr. Nahla Kazim is one of the first UAE physicians to attain sub-specialty degrees of Master’s (2001) and Doctorate (2010) in the field of Reproductive and Developmental Sciences from the University of Edinburgh, UK. She is a Consultant Reproductive Medicine and Infertility at Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic, at Mediclinic Middle East company, and is Director of Fertility and founder of Kazim’s Fertility Barza.

Fakih IVF Doctors Harness AI to help childless couples

Keeping pace with techno innovation, Dubai-based clinic, Fakih IVF has become one of the first centers in the region to integrate AI-assisted sperm search technology into its lab. A path breaking innovation that is designed to be a game-changer in Assisted Reproductive Technology(ART)

Couples looking to be new parents have active AI support with SpermSearchAI at Fakih IVF. The system uses deep learning to instantly highlight viable sperm cells, accelerating what was once a painstaking manual process and, in many cases, transforming failure into success.

Earlier this year, the Fakih IVF team witnessed a milestone that captured global attention. A 32-year-old patient, diagnosed with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) - a condition in which no sperms are detectable in semen samples - had long been told his chances of fatherhood were near impossible. He and his wife had been trying to conceive for two and a half years.

When doctors performed microsurgical testicular sperm extraction (microTESE), the outlook was bleak. Under traditional methods, embryologists could not spot a single viable sperm cell. The procedure seemed to be headed toward failure.

Then came the intervention of AI. With SpermSearchAI scanning the tissue, tiny pockets

of life emerged on the monitorrare, healthy sperm cells that the human eye had missed. These cells were carefully collected and used for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a procedure in which a single sperm is injected directly into an egg.

The outcome? The couple is now expecting their first child.

Recalling the breakthrough event, Dr Ranjith Ramasamy, Consultant Urologist at Fakih IVF, shared the sheer thrill of the Eureka moment. “This was a patient with no visible sperm under the microscope. Without the AI system, the procedure might have been declared unsuccessful. Instead, it enabled us to identify viable sperm and give this couple a genuine chance at parenthood”.

A holistic approach

With some of the highest IVF success rates in the region, Fakih IVF takes a holistic approach that integrates wellness,

Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy Consultant Urologist at Fakih IVF

nutrition, genetics, and advanced reproductive technology.

Infertility affects around one in six couples worldwide, with male-factor infertility contributing to nearly half of these cases. Among the most challenging conditions is NOA, where sperm production in the Testes is extremely limited and difficult to locate.

Traditionally, embryologists must search for testicular tissue manually under high-powered microscopes, combing through cells for hours in the hope of finding a single sperm. Even the most experienced eyes can miss rare, slow-moving, or atypical cells. For many couples, this meant invasive procedures ending with the devastating words: “no sperm found.”

AI offers a way forward. Systems like SpermSearchAI can instantly flag likely candidates for embryologists to review, bringing consistency, speed, and accuracy to one of fertility medicine’s toughest challenges.

At Fakih IVF, the integration of AI isn’t about replacing human expertise; it’s about amplifying it.

Enhanced Consistency: AI reduces the risk of human error and fatigue, ensuring that every sample is analyzed with the same level of precision.

Reduced Search Time: What took hours can now be achieved in minutes, making procedures less taxing on both patients and clinicians.

Quality Control: AI serves as an additional set of “digital eyes,” cross-checking findings and strengthening lab protocols.

Better Outcomes: By uncovering viable sperm that might otherwise be overlooked, AI gives couples a higher chance of achieving fertilization and pregnancy.

Our embryologists are highly skilled, but even the best human eyes have limitations,” explains Dr. Ramasamy. “AI doesn’t tire, and it doesn’t miss subtle details. It’s like having a second expert in the room, one that never blinks.”

Successful AR

This technology’s promise extends beyond the single breakthrough case. Already, clinical trials at Fakih IVF show encouraging results:

Patients with repeated failed retrievals elsewhere are finding success when AI is added to the process.

Couples previously deemed untreatable are now revisiting their options, hopeful of new possibilities.

Lab workflows have become more efficient, allowing embryologists to dedicate more time to patient care and personalized treatment planning.

While AI is making waves across medicine from radiology to oncology, its application in reproductive health is particularly transformative. Fertility treatment sits at the intersection of science and hope, where even incremental improvements can alter the course of a family’s story.

Fakih IVF’s successful use of AIassisted sperm detection places Dubai at the forefront of this movement, signaling a future where the Gulf region contributes cutting-edge advances to reproductive medicine worldwide.

Balancing ethics and AI innovation

As with any innovation in healthcare, ethical considerations matter. Fakih IVF emphasizes that AI is not making decisions independently. It is a tool that is carefully supervised by trained embryologists and clinicians. Says Dr. Ramasamy: “Our role is to ensure AI enhances the care we provide, while patients remain at the center of every decision.”

To this end, patients undergoing AI-assisted treatment at Fakih IVF receive thorough counselling. They are guided through the benefits, limitations, and implications of this technology, ensuring transparency and trust.

For couples facing infertility, time often feels like the enemy. Months turn into years of waiting, hoping, and enduring. AI-assisted sperm search offers not just scientific progress, but also an emotional shift; it shortens the wait, sharpens the chances, and widens the horizon of possibility.

The successful pregnancy achieved with SpermSearchAI is not the end of the story, but the beginning of a new chapter in infertility care. As clinical trials expand and data grows, AI could soon become a standard component of male infertility treatment worldwide.

For now, couples walking into Fakih IVF clinics carry with them something precious: renewed hope. They know that alongside compassionate doctors and cutting-edge labs, a powerful ally in artificial intelligence is helping to tilt the odds in their favor.

Breaking barriers

Building Tomorrow's Families: The KFB Social Enterprise Story

When couples walk into a fertility clinic, they often carry with them more than just medical charts. They bring hope, anxiety, and stories that stretch across years of waiting, sometimes even heartbreak. Dr. Nahla Kazim, one of the UAE’s leading voices in reproductive medicine and healthcare, has seen it all in her 25 years of practice. And if there’s one thing she has learned, it’s that fertility care can’t begin and end in a laboratory.

“True reproductive health,” she points out, “is not just about IVF cycles or medical interventions. It’s about complete well-being –physical, mental, and social. It begins with education, continues with support, and requires society to come together,” elaborates Dr Nahla.

A cocoon for couples

That belief is what gave birth to Kazim’s Fertility Barza (KFB), a pioneering initiative she founded to change the way the UAE – and eventually the wider world – thinks about fertility.

The word barza itself is steeped in tradition. In Emirati culture, the majlis and barza are gathering spaces where communities come together to talk, learn, and share. Dr. Nahla drew on this heritage to create a modern platform where

reproductive health could be discussed openly, without stigma or judgment.

Dr Nahla elaborated further, “The UAE is such a diverse place, full of people from different cultures and backgrounds,” she explains. “To make progress, fertility care must respect these traditions. We cannot just impose medical knowledge. We must create safe spaces where myths are addressed, where taboos are gently broken, and where people feel they can talk freely.”

Educating the community on reproductive health

That’s why KFB doesn’t limit itself to clinics. It goes into academic institutions, teaching ageappropriate reproductive health

Dr. Nahla Kazim Consultant Reproductive Medicine and Infertility Founder, CEO of Kazim's Fertility Barza.

to young people. It reaches out to workplaces, advocating for fertilityfriendly employee policies. In doing so, it aligns seamlessly with national priorities like UAE Vision 2031 and 2071, which emphasize family well-being and human capital development.

Most fertility journeys begin only after problems arise. But Dr. Nahla wants to flip that script. KFB is built around prevention and empowerment – equipping people with balanced-knowledge and healthy habits long before they need medical help.

“A big part of our mission is prevention,” she says. “We want to educate individuals early, guide them on lifestyle changes, and encourage proactive steps like fertility preservation. Something as simple as quitting smoking can make a huge difference to fertility outcomes.”

Through personalized reproductive health assessments and counseling, KFB helps people take charge of their futures. Instead of reacting to a crisis, they can make informed decisions at every stage of life.

Blending Technology and Innovation

If KFB is rooted in cultural sensitivity, it is equally futuristic. Its “Barza Boosters” are tech-driven tools designed to make reproductive health more accessible, engaging, and stigma-free.

Picture a young couple using an Augmented Reality (AR)-powered Fertility Wheel to map out their reproductive journey together. Or a woman in a remote community accessing stigma-free advice through an AI-driven Mixed Reality platform in her own language. Medical students might learn reproductive anatomy through VR classrooms, while would-be parents find comfort in a well-being app designed to ease their anxieties.

“This is not science fiction,” Dr. Nahla smiles. “These are the educational materials of the future –and we are building them now.”

The point isn’t technology for technology’s sake, she adds. It’s about using innovation to remove

barriers and give people access to clear, compassionate guidance wherever they are.

Dr. Nahla’s authority comes from experience. Trained at the University of Edinburgh, she spent decades working with leading fertility centers in the UAE – Tawam Fertility Center, Fakih IVF, and Bourn Hall-Mediclinic. She has always been standing shoulder to shoulder with IVF pioneers and watched ART evolve in the region.

“I’ve seen how the science has changed,” she reflects. “But I’ve also seen the emotional toll on couples, the cultural sensitivities, the difficult decisions. Fertility is not just a medical journey – it’s a profoundly human one.”

This blend of clinical expertise and empathy is what defines KFB. Every tool, every outreach program, every publication is backed by solid science but delivered with compassion.

Disseminating Knowledge: GYNETICS

One of KFB’s most exciting projects is GYNETICS, a bimonthly magazine created with Health Magazine. The idea is simple but powerful – translate complex reproductive science into easy-to-understand language for the public.

Fertility Barza identifies itself as a social enterprise. Its mission is not simply to treat infertility but to create a lifelong culture of reproductive wellness.

This vision is strengthened by the KFB founding members –professionals from healthcare, law, education, and other fields, all part of the Kazim family. Their collective expertise ensures that KFB looks at fertility from every angle, addressing medical, legal, cultural, and emotional needs.

“We are moving from a reactive model of fertility care,” says Dr. Nahla, “to one that is holistic, proactive, and community driven.”

In many ways, KFB reflects the UAE’s own ambitions. Just as the country has become a leader in cutting-edge healthcare and medical tourism, KFB is positioning reproductive wellness as a national priority.

By blending medical expertise with cultural sensitivity, and tradition with futuristic technology, Dr Nahla and her team are creating a model that could inspire other nations.

“This is not only about babies,” says Dr Nahla with conviction. “It’s about healthier families, stronger communities, and a more informed society. It’s about giving people the tools to take charge of their reproductive destinies – with knowledge, compassion, and dignity.”

Knowledge is power,” says Dr. Nahla. “GYNETICS helps people make sense of everything –from gynecology and women’s health to AI-driven fertility technologies. When people are informed, they feel empowered, not afraid.

Unlike traditional clinics, Kazim’s

Kazim’s Fertility Barza is already shaping what that future will look like. “We are building a future through multi-disciplinary approach and experts-communitycollaboration where reproductive wellness is not hidden or stigmatized but embraced as part of life. Where people feel supported, not alone. And where the dream of a family is nurtured with science, compassion, and empowered generations,” concludes Dr Nahla.

Orchid - where science meets compassion on the journey to parenthood

At Orchid Fertility in Dubai Healthcare City, science and compassion walk hand-in-hand. Couples arrive with a mix of hope, fear, and unanswered questions; they leave with clarity, reassurance, and often, the greatest joy of all - a child. What sets Orchid apart is not only its stateof-the-art lab or success rates, but the profound human journey it offers to every patient who walks through its doors.

“In the present times, the health sector is not just known for sophisticated technological innovations only, as most hospitals and specialty clinics harness this. What really matters is the unique patient experience and personal touch extended to patients undergoing treatment. Something they remember and respond to , irrespective of the outcome,” remarks Dr Partha Sarathi Das, Medical Director and consultant in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Orchid IVF and Fertility Centre in Dubai. “It is here that Orchid scores bridging the gap between high-tech treatments and patient-care with an admirable success rate,” he adds.

It’s little wonder then that since its humble beginnings in 2017

with a single patient, Orchid Fertility has grown into a beacon of hope for couples not just from UAE but from across the globe. With pregnancy rates of 70–80% per transfer and live birth rates of 60–65%, Orchid boasts some of the highest success rates in the region.

The humane touch

For most couples, the journey at Orchid begins not with tests or procedures, but with a conversation. The first consultation is as much about emotions as it is about medicine. Patients are

encouraged to share their stories, their anxieties, and their dreams. “Behind every frozen egg, sperm, or embryo is a dream, a plan, a hope,” enunciates Dr. Partha. “At Orchid, we treat each of those futures with the seriousness they deserve while never hesitating to answer any question the patient may have.”

This philosophy is evident in how the clinic approaches fertility assessments. Comprehensive screenings including ovarian reserve testing, semen analysis, and hormonal evaluations are explained step by step. Patients are not rushed through a battery of tests; instead, the focus is on helping them understand where they stand today and what options lie ahead.

Once assessments are complete, treatment plans are designed with precision, often aided by artificial intelligence and advanced genetic screening. Embryos, for example, are cultured to day five rather than rushed at day three, aligning with the natural rhythm

Dr Partha Sarathi Das Medical Director and consultant in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Orchid IVF and Fertility Centre in Dubai.

of implantation. Pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT), hysteroscopies, endometrial biopsies, and immunomodulation are integrated into protocols to improve outcomes.

But alongside these advanced techniques, what is offered is emotional support. Orchid’s team includes not just doctors and embryologists, but counselors and nurses trained to support patients through the highs and lows of fertility treatment. “Patients often tell us that, even if treatment didn’t result in a pregnancy, the compassion, honesty, and support they experienced, carried them through their darkest days,” explains Dr. Partha.

Rekindling Hope Against the Odds

Perhaps nothing illustrates Orchid’s compassionate approach better than the story of a young cancer survivor and his wife. Diagnosed with testicular cancer at 18, the man’s fertility had been severely compromised by chemotherapy and surgery. His wife struggled with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). After three failed IVF attempts elsewhere, they had nearly given up hope.

The couple underwent an indepth evaluation. Testicular sperm extraction (TESA) retrieved viable sperm, while his wife’s IVF cycle, enhanced with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and pre-implantation genetic testing, yielded healthy embryos. Personalized addons such as hysteroscopy, endometrial biopsy, immune modulation, and microbiome therapy helped prepare her body for implantation. Within the same year, this couple celebrated the birth of a healthy baby.

If this patient had frozen his sperm before chemotherapy, he wouldn’t have had to endure such immense challenges,” reflects Dr. Partha. “Fertility preservation should be a fundamental part of cancer treatment planning.

Fertility Preservation

As lifestyles and priorities evolve, more individuals are choosing to delay parenthood for various reasons. Orchid Fertility is at the forefront of this shift, offering fertility preservation options that put control back in the hands of patients. Women can freeze eggs through vitrification, couples can preserve embryos, and men can opt for sperm cryopreservation.

“More people are asking, ‘Will I still be able to have children when I’m ready?’ Fertility preservation provides them with answers that’re rooted in reassurance and possibility,” says Dr. Partha. It’s not limited to patients facing medical treatments like chemotherapy; increasingly, healthy young individuals are opting for them proactively.

What truly defines Orchid, however, is not just its treatment but its culture. Dr. Partha emphasizes that every member of staff - from doctors to receptionists to housekeeping - plays a role in shaping the patient’s journey. “Our staffs absorb the culture of empathy and professionalism. Over time, it becomes second nature, creating a patient experience that is warm, supportive, and seamless,” he explains.

This holistic care also includes lifestyle advice, stress management, diet, and counseling which are integral to the treatment plan.

“For us, success is not only the birth of a child, but the assurance that every embryo transferred has the best possible chance of resulting in pregnancy,” explains Dr Partha.

Something deeply appreciated by couples. As one grateful couple, after being blessed with a healthy baby, explained: “His methodical and thoughtful approach made all the difference. He took the time to slow things down, carefully break down each step, and do everything possible to maximize our chances.”

Orchid is a super specialty tertiary care fertility clinic that is a blend of high clinical global expertise , advanced cutting edge scientific precision technology, molded with personalized care , transparency and highest level of ethics

Research and innovation continue to drive Orchid forward. The clinic explores non-invasive genetic testing of embryos, new approaches to fertility preservation, and methods that reduce intervention while improving outcomes. But through it all, the heart of Orchid remains the same: compassion, empathy, and respect for each patient’s unique journey.

First IVF unveils egg freezing with hymenal preservation

A new breakthrough for unmarried women to freeze their eggs while preserving their hymenal integrity is now available at Dubai’s leading fertility clinic. Learn all about it.

For decades, conversations about fertility preservation have often clashed with cultural values and personal beliefs. Now, Dubai’s leading Assisted Reproduction clinic - First IVF has unveiled a groundbreaking solution that allows women to freeze their eggs without compromising hymenal integrity ushering in a new era of choice, dignity, and empowerment.

At the heart of this innovation is a novel transrectal, ultrasoundguided egg retrieval technique, introduced and perfected by the Dr. Michael Fakih, a pioneer in Fertility medicine and founder of First IVF.

The region’s exclusive transrectal ovum pick up for egg freezing, it is already changing the way young women think about fertility.

Empowerment in reproductive health

Egg freezing has rapidly become

one of the most transformative tools in reproductive health.

For women who want to delay motherhood - whether to pursue higher education, advance their careers, or simply wait for the right time - egg freezing offers a safeguard. By preserving eggs at a younger age, women can give themselves the option of conceiving later with their own, healthy eggs.

But for many women in the Middle East and beyond, the decision to undergo egg retrieval has not been straightforward. Conventional egg freezing requires vaginal instrumentation, a process that can raise profound concerns for those wishing to preserve their hymenal integrity due to cultural, religious, or deeply personal reasons.

“This is where we saw a gap,” says Dr. Fakih. “We wanted

to give women the freedom to protect their fertility while ensuring their values, dignity, and privacy remain fully respected.”

The clinic’s exclusive technique bypasses the hymen entirely. Instead of the traditional vaginal route, eggs are retrieved via a minimally invasive transrectal approach under ultrasound guidance.

The Procedure

Preparation and Counselling

Every journey begins with thorough counselling. Patients meet with specialists to understand the procedure,

the timing, and the emotional aspects of fertility preservation. Discussions cover medical readiness, expectations, and longterm planning.

Pain management protocols are meticulously designed to ensure the patient feels comfortable throughout.

The Retrieval

Using cutting-edge techniques, eggs are accessed transrectally avoiding any vaginal instrumentation, ensuring hymenal preservation.

Post-Freezing Care

After retrieval, patients are monitored closely. Recovery is typically swift, with most resuming their daily routines within 24 hours. Post-procedure counselling helps patients understand storage, timelines, and future use.

Who Can Benefit?

The introduction of hymenalpreserving egg retrieval has opened the doors of fertility preservation to a wider group of women, including:

Young women wishing to preserve their fertility options early in life before egg quality declines.

Unmarried women who prioritize virginity for social, cultural, or religious reasons, but still want to secure their future motherhood journey.

Patients seeking the most advanced and compassionate fertility care available in the UAE.

First IVF Fertility Center has grown to become one of the region’s leading names in infertility, gynecology, obstetrics, genetics, and IVF care. The centers are located in Dubai Healthcare City, Dubai, and at Burjeel Hospital, Al Najda, Abu Dhabi. They also house a stateof-the-art, full-service genetics laboratory, bringing advanced diagnostics under one roof.

The process is confidential, discreet, and designed to put the patient at ease. “From the moment a woman walks through our doors, we are committed to her privacy,” explains Dr. Fakih. “Our promise is that her health, her choices, and her beliefs are honored every step of the way.

Clinical excellence is at the core of First IVF’s practice that is led by the visionary Dr. Fakih, with decades of expertise and thousands of successful cases. Studies conducted within the clinic have demonstrated excellent safety and success rates for the transrectal approach.

Upon request, all-female medical teams can be provided, another way the clinic underscores its respect for cultural comfort and confidentiality.

The clinic’s work is also part of a larger global conversation about women’s reproductive autonomy. Around the world, women are demanding more options, more respect, and more individualized care. First IVF is positioning itself as a leader not only in technical excellence but also in holistic, value-centered fertility medicine.

Bringing sophistication to a deeply ethical decision Fertility is deeply personal, and First IVF treats it as such. The

As more women in the UAE and beyond consider fertility preservation, First IVF’s technique will likely serve as a benchmark for the future. It is a reminder that medicine does not need to force women into difficult compromises; it can adapt, evolve, and honor the full spectrum of their needs.

In the words of the founder Dr. Fakih: “When it comes to fertility care, you don’t have to choose between your future and your principles. With the right care, you can protect both.”

How fertility preservation is changing parenthood in the UAE

Dr. Mazen Dayeh of Best Life Fertility Centre in Sharjah throws a spotlight on fertility preservation

When 25-year-old Layla was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was devastated. Her doctors explained that chemotherapy would likely damage her ovaries, jeopardizing her dream of motherhood. “My first thought was survival,” she recalls, “but my second was: will I ever be a mother?”

That’s when she met Dr. Mazen Dayeh, General Manager of Best Life Fertility Centre in Sharjah. Within days, his team retrieved and froze her eggs before cancer treatment began. Three years later, cancer-free and ready to rebuild her life, Layla returned to the clinic. Using IVF, the eggs were fertilized with her husband’s sperm, and today, she is the proud mother of a healthy baby boy.

“This is the miracle of preservation. Cancer took away her health for a time, but it didn’t take away her dream of being a mother. “remarks Dr Mazen

The art of fertility preservation, the need of the hour

In the 20th century, parenthood was seen as something dictated by fate, biology, and timing.

Not anymore. Today, science has changed that equation. Fertility preservation - the freezing of eggs, sperm, or embryos -offers men and women the ability to safeguard their reproductive potential for the future.

“The biggest misconception is that fertility is endless,” Dr. Mazen explains. “Science tells us otherwise. Preservation gives us the gift of control, even when biology is working against us.”

A woman is born with around two million eggs, but by puberty only about 300,000 remain. Egg quality declines sharply from the mid-30s, and by 40, natural conception chances drop to below 10 %. Men, though producing sperm throughout life, also face declining quality with age. These factors could lead to higher risks of miscarriage and genetic abnormalities.

Fertility preservation, says Dr. Mazen, is a way of “pausing time”, capturing the healthiest eggs or sperm now, to be used when life circumstances align.

Why It Matters More Than Ever?

Several trends, both global and specific to the UAE, are driving the growing demand for fertility preservation:

Delayed parenthood: As careers, education, and financial independence take precedence, men and women are starting families later and the average marriage age has risen in the UAE.

Dr. Mazen Dayeh

Medical necessity: Rising cancer survival rates mean more people live through treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy that can permanently damage reproductive health. Fertility preservation allows patients to focus on recovery without losing hope of future parenthood.

Lifestyle challenges: Stress, obesity, smoking, and poor diet, affect fertility. Preservation provides security as patients work on healthier habits.

Cultural shifts: Increasingly, individuals and couples want to plan families on their terms while still honoring strong cultural values of family and legacy.

How It Works?

At Best Life Fertility Centre, the process begins with counselling. “We explain options, success rates, and costs clearly,” says Dr. Mazen. “Preservation is not just a medical decision; it’s a life decision.”

For women, the journey involves ovarian stimulation to mature multiple eggs, retrieval under sedation, and freezing either

directly or after fertilization to create embryos. For men, it can be as simple as freezing a semen sample. In more complex cases, surgical sperm retrieval or ovarian/testicular tissue freezing is offered.

counselling and psychological care into its services. “We never rush patients,” he stresses. “We help them understand not just the medical and financial aspects, but also the emotional journey.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the process painful?

All samples are stored in liquid nitrogen at –196°C,” Dr. Mazen explains. “Frozen eggs and embryos enjoy 90 per cent survival rates and remain safe for years - even decades. When required, they are thawed and used in IVF, with success rates comparable to fresh samples.

Stories of Hope

Beyond science, it’s human stories that capture the power of preservation.

A 33-year-old female executive froze her eggs to relieve the pressure of balancing career ambitions with her ticking biological clock. “For the first time in years, I felt I could breathe, like having a time capsule of my younger self. Whenever I’m ready, I know I can try, “she explains

The UAE has rapidly emerged as a leader in fertility medicine, attracting patients from across the world. Dr. Mazen adds, “Our USP is comprehensive care. We combine advanced science like AI-driven embryo selection and genetic testing, with compassionate, individualized care.”

AI, for instance, now helps embryologists select the best embryos by analyzing patterns invisible to the human eye,” notes Dr. Mazen.

Best Life Fertility integrates

The future of fertility preservation promises extraordinary possibilities. Scientists are exploring artificial gametes, regenerative medicine to restore ovarian function, and even artificial wombs. AI will continue to improve outcomes, while advanced cryogenic methods could extend preservation for generations.

Dr. Mazen envisions a world where fertility preservation is routine: “just like a health check-up.” Every cancer patient, he says, should automatically be offered preservation before treatment. Every young professional should feel empowered, not pressured, about when to start a family.

“The future is not just about freezing eggs or sperm; It’s about giving people control, dignity, and the ability to dream beyond limits.” he says.

How Much Does Fertility Preservation Cost in the UAE?

Costs vary, subject to the procedure type, medication, and storage duration. Best Life Fertility Centre, provides transparent pricing with flexible packages:

Egg Freezing: AED 15,000 –25,000 (including stimulation, retrieval, freezing)

Sperm Freezing: AED 2,000 –4,000

Embryo Freezing: AED 18,000 –30,000

Storage Fees: AED 1,000 –2,500 per year

Note: Prices are indicative and personalized after consultation.

Egg retrieval is performed under sedation; patients feel no pain. Sperm freezing is painless.

Will freezing damage eggs or embryos?

Modern vitrification ensures over 95% survival rates after thawing.

Can preserved eggs guarantee pregnancy?

No guarantee, but success rates depend largely on age at preservation. Younger eggs = higher success. Can unmarried women freeze eggs in the UAE?

Yes, UAE laws permit single women to freeze eggs for future use. Embryo creation, however, requires marriage. How many eggs should I freeze?

Generally, 10–20 eggs are recommended for one successful pregnancy attempt, depending on age.

What happens when I’m ready to use them?

Eggs are thawed, fertilized via IVF, embryos are cultured, and the healthiest is transferred.

What if I don’t use my frozen eggs/embryos?

Patients can choose to continue storage, donate for research, or discard with consent.

A guide to enhancing fertility and good health for expectant mothers

When a young woman plans her family, it is vital she and her spouse are mindful of the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrition she requires to enhance her fertility before conception and support the health growth of the fetus as well as assure her of a sound and stable health throughout her pregnancy.

obstetrician and gynecologist, at the Emirates Specialty Hospital, Dubai, elaborated on the crucial role of these prenatal supplements. “Preconception vitamins such as folic acid, iron, Vitamin D, iodine among others. improve fertility, reduce maternal risks, and are crucial for optimal fetal growth and development. Preconception vitamins play a critical role in preparing the body for pregnancy and improving outcomes for both the mother and baby.

What are prenatal supplements?

Here is where the prenatal or preconception health supplements acquire a place of vital importance. Let us take a look at the role they play.

Speaking to HEALTH, Dr Amla Khopkar Nazreth, specialist

Let us understand how these supplements are more niche. Prenatal vitamin supplements are daily multivitamins designed for people who are pregnant or trying to conceive to support healthy fetal development and prevent birth defects,

particularly neural tube defects. Key ingredients include at least 400 micrograms of folic acid (or folate) to reduce neural tube defects, iron to support blood cell production, and other vital micronutrients like calcium, iodine, and vitamins A, C, D, and B. It’s recommended to start taking them at least three months before

conception or as soon as pregnancy is confirmed.

Fertility and Hormonal Balance

In the UAE, one such organization ASD International specializes in niche gynecology related medicines to regulate PCOS, chronic pelvic pain,

enhance fertility parameters and other genito -urinary and anorectal disorders that support expectant mothers. In addition, they also have a variety of vitamins and essential mineral for sustained Vitamin support for adult health.

ASD International’s Prenatal Supplements

ASD Carniplex

Zncoq10

Zncoq10 which contains zinc and coenzyme Q10 is a potent and highly purified anti-oxidant. It decreases the oxidative stress and it works as an Immunity Booster. It improves male and female fertility parameters and regulates hormonal levels to normal range without any side effects.

Asd Sustained Vit

This is a unique multivitamin formulation that has 20 essential vitamins and minerals in daily recommended doses. It uses sustained release technology this ensures optimal absorption and prolonged efficacy

This is a special formula containing L-Carnitine, Micro Cellulose, Silica and Magnesium Stearate. These powerful compounds are renowned for their role in energy production and metabolism. Moreover, this combination plays a vital role in supporting fertility.

Speaking to HEALTH, the spokesperson for ASD international elaborated, “Unlike regular multivitamins that release everything into your system at once, our supplements deliver vitamins and minerals gradually throughout the day. This controlled release means your body absorbs nutrients more effectively, making them work better while minimizing waste. It also ensures a continuous supply of essential nutrients, helping you maintain steady energy, stronger immunity, and overall wellbeing without the dips and spikes that come with conventional formulas.” Their vitamin configurations, prescribed by gynecologists are especially supportive for women planning a pregnancy, expectant mothers, menopausal and postmenopausal women, adults managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Women planning to be mothers, need to enhance their fertility and be mindful of their hormonal balance especially since many women these days suffer from hormonal conditions such as PCOS.

The Role of Preconception Vitamins

Many women enter pregnancy with suboptimal nutrient reserves. Preconception vitamins help replenish these stores, correct nutritional deficiencies, reducing risks of complications at childbirth. At a glance here is a guide of what to have and for how long during the pre-conception stage

1. Folic Acid (Vitamin B9)

• Essential in the first 28 days of conception when the neural tube closes.

• Prevents neural tube defects (spina bifida, anencephaly).

• Recommended dose: 400–800 µg daily, ideally at least 3 months before conception.

2. Iron

• Builds maternal iron stores to prevent anemia during pregnancy.

• Supports oxygen delivery to developing tissues.

3. Vitamin D & Calcium

• Important for bone health of both mother and baby.

• Vitamin D deficiency is linked to infertility, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia.

4. Vitamin B12

• Works with folic acid in DNA synthesis and prevention of megaloblastic anemia.

• Deficiency (especially in vegetarians/vegans) may

impair fertility and fetal neural development.

5. Iodine

• Critical for thyroid hormone production, brain and neurocognitive development of the fetus.

6. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA, EPA)

• Improve egg quality and ovulation.

• Support fetal brain and eye development.

7. Zinc & Selenium

• Enhance fertility and regulate hormone balance.

• Antioxidant properties protect egg and sperm quality.

Prenatal supplements were mandatory from a public health perspective. “Preconception supplementation is especially important in regions with high rates of malnutrition or anemia. It is now considered a preventive strategy, not just supportive care once pregnancy is established, “explained Dr Amla.

Walk down any pharmacy aisle or scroll through wellness sites, and you’ll be spoilt for choice with the number and variety of supplements promising everything from glowing skin to enhanced fertility. For women, whose health and wellbeing are deeply tied to hormonal balance, immunity, and nutrition, it can be overwhelming to separate what’s truly beneficial from what’s just marketing. The good news? You don’t need exotic powders or complicated regimes. Often, the key lies in a balanced diet supported by a few well-chosen, research-backed supplements. Important advice: Always consult your doctor before taking any supplements or making changes to your regular diet plan. This is particularly more important for women planning a pregnancy or who are pregnant.

Protein-rich foods like lentils, beans, fish, chicken, and eggs help regulate insulin, a hormone often disrupted in PCOS. They also provide amino acids that are essential for cellular repair and egg quality.

Healthy fats - think avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil - support hormone production and keep inflammation in check. Omega-3 fatty acids, found abundantly

in salmon, walnuts, and chia seeds, are particularly beneficial for regulating menstrual cycles and supporting fetal brain development during pregnancy.

Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and moringa leaves are packed with folate, iron, and calcium -nutrients crucial for fertility and pregnancy. Folate in particular lowers the risk of birth defects and supports DNA synthesis.

Colorful fruits and vegetables bring antioxidants like vitamin C, beta-carotene, and polyphenols, which protect eggs from oxidative stress and boost immunity.

That said, even the most carefully curated plate may fall short in today’s fast-paced world. That’s where supplements step in, filling gaps, supporting hormonal balance, and preparing the body for different stages of life. That is why every expectant mother is expected to supplement her diet and health with special prenatal supplements.

Lifestyle Matters Too

Supplements and diet work best when paired with holistic lifestyle habits

Regular exercise (strength training, yoga, or brisk walking) improves insulin sensitivity, supports hormonal balance, and boosts mood. Stress management through meditation, journaling, or even daily quiet time helps regulate cortisol, which in turn supports fertility and skin health.

Adequate sleep is nonnegotiable for hormonal repair and immune resilience.

While supplements are powerful allies, they’re not magic bullets. Think of them as part of a larger toolkit, one that includes mindful eating, movement, rest, and self-care.
