Vociferous champion for Holistic and humane approach to ADHD
Few voices have reshaped how we understand ADHD and mental wellness quite like Dr. Geraldine Naidoo. A trailblazing expert in stress and anxiety, Dr. Naidoo brings over two decades of experience to a deeply compassionate mission: helping people - especially adults and children - understand ADHD not as a disorder, but as a difference that is a result of a collection of learned patterns and adaptive responses rooted in early childhood experiences.
With a unique lens shaped by her PhD research and clinical work, Dr. Naidoo explores how early emotional environments shape the nervous system—and how these early templates often masquerade as modern-day “dysfunction”. She emphasizes, “The good news is there is no gene that directly causes ADHD, and this means there are interventions that can support an individual remarkably.”
Dr. Geraldine was late diagnosed with ADHD at age 40 and she has spent the last 15 years finding and understanding the root causes, and successfully and sustainably applying these methods to those with ADHD.
Her approach blends neuroscience, trauma-informed care, and emotional intelligence to reveal a radical truth: ADHD is not a flaw in focus, but a reflection of how the body and brain learn to survive.
What sets Dr. Naidoo apart is her insistence that healing must be holistic and humane. She moves beyond traditional diagnosis, empowering her clients to uncover the narratives their nervous systems have carried silently for years.
Her upcoming podcast, “ADHD in Focus”, private coaching, retreats, and workshops are all designed to help people feel safe enough to explore— and ultimately rewire—their internal patterns.
Whether working with high-achieving professionals, parents of neurodivergent children, or educators seeking to understand their students, Dr. Naidoo emphasizes that emotional safety, nervous system regulation, and self-compassion are at the heart of true transformation. “ADHD is not just in your head— it’s carried in your body, your story, your breath, your belief systems” she often reminds her clients.
“And when we work with the whole person, real change begins.”
Her work is gaining particular attention in the Middle East, where she’s pioneering conversations around midlife wellness, burnout, and neurodivergence through podcasts, conferences, and upcoming CEU-accredited training. Drawing on influences as diverse as polyvagal theory, somatic therapies, compassionate inquiry, and developmental psychology, Dr. Naidoo is building a bridge between neuroscience and the nuances of lived experience.
Calm, grounded, and fiercely insightful, she helps others understand that they are not broken— but brilliantly wired for adaptation. Through tailor-made methodologies, structured tools, and a deep commitment to individual flourishing, she offers a new narrative: one where ADHD is seen as an evolutionary advantage, not a lifelong deficit.
Today, Dr. Naidoo continues to lead a powerful global conversation about reimagining mental health—not as a label, but as an invitation to reconnect with our most authentic selves.
And her advice for anyone feeling overwhelmed by their own patterns? “Start by listening to your body, and by leveraging the support of a professional with a proven track record” H

Mandatory health insurance in the UAE, assures coverage of the treatment cost, but also provides for preventive care, periodic screening and early detection saving on huge expenses and pre-empting any emergency. Hitesh Motwani, Deputy CEO at InsuranceMarkets.ae tells you why it makes sense to choose a robust health cover
Hitesh Motwani Deputy CEO at InsuranceMarkets.ae
How is mandatory health care insurance a gamechanger in the UAE?
Health insurance is no longer optional in the UAE. With coverage now mandatory not only in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but also across the Northern Emirates, access to healthcare has become more consistent, inclusive and structured. This policy ensures that all residents, regardless of income level, can receive basic medical attention. It reduces reliance on emergency care and encourages earlier intervention for everyday health issues. It’s a significant
step forward for public health outcomes and healthcare equality across the nation.
What are the various aspects of health that a good health insurance cover delivers?
Modern health insurance in the UAE is about more than just hospitalisation coverage. A comprehensive plan supports the full spectrum of care before, during, and after illness. A well-rounded policy typically includes:
Inpatient and outpatient services
• Access to general practitioners and specialists
• Emergency care and ambulance services
• Maternity and newborn care
• Diagnostics and lab testing
• Optional dental and optical coverage
• Mental health support, including psychiatric consultations and therapy sessions
The inclusion of mental health care in many newer plans is a progressive shift, recognising that wellbeing isn’t only physical. Mental and emotional health, especially in highpaced urban settings like the UAE,
What one should keep in mind while shopping for a robust healthcare cover?
While affordability is often the first thing people look at, choosing the cheapest plan doesn’t always deliver long-term value. A strong health insurance policy should offer:
• A wide and accessible medical provider network
• Transparent co-pay structures and benefit limits
is equally important and finally gaining the focus it deserves.
Can you elaborate on the role of preventive care with a good cover and how it also helps reduce the financial burden of care overall?
One of the most valuable but often underappreciated aspects of good insurance is its preventive care offerings. Many insurers now cover services like annual check-ups, vaccinations and early screenings for chronic illnesses like diabetes or high blood pressure. This pre-emptive approach helps detect conditions early, making them easier and less expensive to treat. Preventive care improves individual health outcomes and helps manage healthcare costs across the system. Managing cholesterol or blood sugar levels early through routine monitoring is far more cost-effective than treating complications years later. Proactive healthcare today prevents reactive crises tomorrow.
• Coverage for pre-existing and chronic conditions
• Outpatient and diagnostic care, not just hospitalisation
• Support for mental health and wellness
• Clear guidance on waiting periods and exclusions
Think of your insurance not just as a backup for emergencies, but as a regular health partner especially for families or individuals managing existing conditions.
What
are the other aspects of health insurance
that
go a long way in benefiting all
stakeholders.
Would you say it is a win-win for all?
When health insurance works well, it creates value for everyone in the ecosystem:
• Individuals benefit from access to timely and affordable care
• Healthcare providers see more engaged patients and structured billing
• Insurers gain from a healthier and more predictable risk pool
• The government and broader public health system see reduced emergency admissions and better long-term health outcomes
• In fact, mandatory health insurance encourages a culture of preventive care, which ultimately reduces the burden on public services and creates a healthier population both physically and economically. H

When 39-year-old Reema* walked into Dr. Usha Kiran’s consultation room at Prime Hospital, Dubai, she was exhaustedphysically and emotionally.
“For months, she’d been battling heavy, painful periods and a constant pressure in her lower abdomen,” recalls Dr. Usha Kiran, a UK-certified consultant in gynecology and an expert in minimally invasive surgery. “Her fibroids were affecting her work, her sleep, and even simple things like going for a walk.”
But Reema was clear about one thing: she didn’t want a hysterectomy (removal of uterus) or myomectomy (removal of fibroids).
“She told me: ‘Doctor, I’m not ready to give up my uterus or have a cut on the uterus to remove fibroids. Isn’t there a way to treat this without removing it?’ That’s when I discussed the option of laparoscopic microwave ablation with her,” Dr. Usha Kiran recounted.
Laparoscopic Microwave Ablation
(MWA) is one of the recent, most advanced treatments for uterine fibroids, a common condition that affects up to 70 per cent of women by the age of 50. Fibroids are most diagnosed in women in their 30s and early 50s but can develop earlier.
“Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow in or around the uterus,” explains Dr. Usha. “They can cause heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, or even fertility issues.” Not all women with fibroids experience symptoms; many cases are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally.
“Traditionally, treating fibroids meant either surgery (open or laparoscopic) by removing just the fibroids (myomectomy,) or in many cases, removing the uterus completely,” the doctor says.
So far one other non-surgical treatment of fibroids was uterine artery embolization but the downside of it is, it compromises the blood supply to the uterus which is not desirable in young women wanting to preserve future fertility.
But MWA offers a uterus-conserving alternative without scarring the uterus (as in myomectomy) or compromising the blood supply to the uterus (as in myomectomy) or compressing the blood supply to the uterus (as in uterine artery embolization)
“In microwave ablation, we insert a small probe into the fibroid using laparoscopic, keyhole surgery,” says Dr. Usha Kiran. “In simple terms, the probe emits controlled microwave

energy, which heats up and destroys the fibroid tissue from the inside. There’s no cutting of the fibroid, no large sutures on the uterus, reducing the risk of future uterine rupture, and very minimal bleeding.
According to Dr. Usha, the benefits of MWA are game-changing, especially for women who want to avoid major surgery or preserve their fertility. “Because the procedure is so precise, there’s minimal damage to surrounding uterine tissue,” she says. “This means there’s less scarring, and in many cases, the uterus heals almost as if nothing happened.
MWA also offers:
• Minimal bleeding during the procedure
• Faster recovery. Most women go home the same day or the next
• Lower risk of adhesions that can impact fertility
Of course, it takes anything from one to three months to shrink the fibroids but during this period patients do not
experience pain unlike in uterine artery embolization where pain could be intense and last for up to one year.
“For women like Reema, this can mean getting back to life faster, and with their uterus intact,” says Dr. Usha.
One of the biggest questions women ask is whether they’ll still be able to have children after MWA.
“The short answer is yes, in most cases,” says Dr. Usha.
“One of the major advantages of MWA is that it preserves the uterus with minimal scarring, making it an excellent choice for women wishing to maintain fertility. Also, the risk of uterine rupture in a future pregnancy is significantly lower compared to traditional myomectomy. However, it’s important to have a detailed discussion with your doctor because every case is unique.”
As with any medical procedure, MWA carries some risks.
“There’s a small chance of infection, or that some fibroid tissue may need a second treatment if it’s not fully ablated,” Dr. Usha explains. “But overall, MWA is considered very safe when performed by a trained specialist.”
So, who is the ideal candidate for laparoscopic microwave ablation?
According to Dr. Usha Kiran, it’s women who have symptomatic fibroids but still wish to preserve their uterus. “Many of my patients come to me because they want to avoid a hysterectomy, or myomectomy” she says. “They’re looking for a solution that treats the problem without taking away a part of their body.”
MWA is also an excellent option for women who prefer minimally invasive procedures over traditional open surgeries. “This technique involves tiny keyhole incisions, which means less pain, less bleeding, and no large scars,” Dr. Usha explains. “It’s about treating the fibroid while keeping the rest of the body as untouched as possible.”
For women who want to avoid long hospital stays or significant blood loss, MWA offers another advantage: faster recovery. “Most women are back on their feet in a day or two,” says Dr. Usha. “It’s a quicker, gentler path back to normal life.”
As for Reema, her life has changed dramatically since the procedure.
“Her bleeding stopped. Her energy came back. And best of all, she still has her uterus,” says Dr. Usha with a smile. “For many women, that
If you have heavy periods, pelvic pain, frequent urination, or trouble conceiving, don’t ignore the symptoms. “Many women live with fibroids silently for years,” says Dr. Usha. “But the sooner you seek advice, the more options you’ll have, especially uterus-sparing treatments like MWA.”

“FEMTECH”, the expanding market of wearables technology and digital Apps is transforming women’s health and empowering them!
Imagine a world where a single ring, bracelet, or smartwatch can tell you more about your body than years of notebooks, calendars, and guesswork ever could. For millions of women, that world is already here, thanks to an exciting surge in “Femtech” technology uniquely designed for women’s health and, specifically, for reproductive wellness. From tracking fertility to decoding hormones, these wearable devices and smart apps are turning users into active partners in their own care.
A bi-monthly column offering an informed insight into the latest cutting-edge advancements in gynecology and women’s health by experts on women’s reproductive health
Femtech is short for “female technology,” encompassing a fastgrowing field of apps, gadgets, and smart platforms dedicated to women’s health. These tools have evolved rapidly, moving from basic period reminders to sophisticated systems that can analyze body temperature, heart rate, and even stress markers to deliver truly personal insights. Devices like the Oura Ring or biosensors such as Ava and Kegg can spot subtle changes that signal ovulation, fertile windows, or hormonal shifts all while blending seamlessly into daily life.
By syncing this data with apps like Clue or Flo, women can map their menstrual cycles, monitor symptoms, and receive science-backed advice tailored precisely to their body’s rhythms. It’s a far cry from the onesize-fits-all approaches of the past.
Femtech’s reach now spans every chapter of the reproductive journey: Menstrual Health: AI-powered insights predict not just when your period will start, but how symptoms like cramps or mood swings might unfold, offering practical and personalized guidance.
Fertility & Conception: Smart sensors and predictive apps remove much of the stress and uncertainty from family planning. Pinpointed ovulation alerts help couples maximize their chances of conception, and evidence-based tips offer further support.
Pregnancy: Modern wearables support expectant mothers by tracking sleep, stress, and even fetal development with movements. Apps act as digital diaries and checklists, helping moms navigate appointments and symptoms, and flagging any problems early.
Menopause and Beyond: With features like hot-flash detection and sleep tracking, these devices bring relief and clarity to women navigating hormonal changes later in life.
The best part? Many devices now have ultra-discreet designs like sleek rings, elegant wristbands, headbands, necklaces or even “smart” earrings, making health tracking feel natural, private and seamless.
Continuous, Non-Invasive
Monitoring: No more manual entries or clunky thermometers. Rings like Oura and Femometer
monitor temperature, heart rate, and sleep with clinical accuracy, quietly gathering key data around the clock.
AI-Driven, Personalized
Analytics: Advanced algorithms interpret your unique trends, delivering alerts about ovulation, potential pre-menstrual syndrome, or predicted period dates.
Seamless App Integration: Device data syncs instantly with your smartphone, offering easily understood feedback, reminders, and actionable suggestions for lifestyle tweaks or medical follow-up.
Medical Validation: Some leading devices, such as the Oura Ring, have been clinically tested and can match or outperform traditional cycle prediction methods.
Telehealth and Expert Input: Some apps connect users directly to telemedicine consultations, bringing professional advice right to your device.
The UAE is fast becoming a regional leader in the Femtech
revolution. Local innovators like Hertility offer online reproductive health checks, while forward-thinking clinics are integrating wearable data or connecting Apps into fertility treatments and routine care. Driven by a national focus on healthcare excellence and women’s empowerment, UAE provide fertile ground for Femtech, though wide adoption is just beginning. Globally, the FDA and European CE certifications set standards, but enforcement is inconsistent. For instance, only a few apps like Natural Cycles have rigorous approval. The UAE prioritizes aligning with international standards, while emphasizing data security and clinical validation. Still, rapid innovations and emerging of thousands of devices and Apps choices means regulations may lag, making it crucial for consumers to stay alert and do their homework on new devices.
With excitement, though, comes responsibility
Myth #1: Femtech Apps Replace the Doctor
data are highly sensitive. Not all apps offer the same level of security. Some have even been fined for unauthorized data sharing, so check privacy policies closely.
There are also big ethical questions. As devices collect more personal info, robust encryption and transparent consent are nonnegotiable. True empowerment only happens when women retain control over their data. H
There’s no doubt wearable technology is transforming the way women approach their health, from adolescence through menopause. These innovations foster insight, empowerment, and early medical intervention when needed. But getting the most out of them requires ethical industry leadership, clear regulation, and active partnerships between users, developers, and clinicians.
Reality: Even the best app or ring can only supplement but not replace the experience of healthcare professionals. Use these tools as companions, not substitutes.
Myth #2: Wearables Guarantee Results
Reality: While they can significantly improve cycle or fertility tracking, wearables cannot guarantee pregnancy, prevent conception or treat underlying issues like endometriosis or hormonal disorders still require medical intervention.
Myth #3: Privacy Is Assured
Reality: Your cycle and fertility
As more clinics, start-ups, government bodies in the UAE and around the world invest in women’s health innovation, the possibilities keep growing. The future looks bright for personalized medicine, but it will work best when built on science, trust, privacy, and real user empowerment.
So, strap on the future: because women’s health is not just about data; it’s about dignity, choice, and a healthier tomorrow!
Flora Abbruzzese Founder - Medalpharma, Italy
In a three-part series, Flora Abbruzzese, managing director and founder of Medalpharma, Italy presents the case for phytotherapy, a new branch of alternative therapy gaining popularity because of its non-toxic, natural ingredients and unique combination of plant molecules with synthetic molecules of medicine.
In the first part of the series, the concept of Phytotherapy was introduced along with its historical context and adaptation as a modern panacea to address serious health challenges. (www. healthmagazine.ae/ob/0425/#36)
In the second part, several patients shared their stories of healing and relief with Medalpharma’s supplements that worked wonders. In the last and concluding part, Flora takes on questions to explain how phytotherapy works in real time. (www.healthmagazine. ae/ob/0625/#24) Presenting excerpts from a Q&A session with the pioneering founder of Medalpharma.
How does phytotherapy work in real time?
Phytotherapy is a medical discipline that studies the potential healing properties of medicinal plants and their derivatives. It refers to the therapeutic applications, both preventive and curative, for which the effectiveness of a plantbased drug has been scientifically proven. Phytotherapy determines therapeutic dosages, possible side effects, potential interactions, and the toxicity of the preparations.
The development of a traditional drug generally follows a process involving various analyses and studies to select, among thousands of potentially active substances, the one that is truly effective and safe for therapeutic use. To bring a drug to market, each phase of this process must yield positive results. In the
case of phytotherapy products, the process is essentially reversed.
Plants have been used for their medicinal and healing quality since times immemorial, how does phytotherapy approach this differently?
Indeed, the use of a specific plantbased drug is not new, as it has been used for hundreds of years by thousands of people. Through this repeated use, the approximate therapeutic dose and its tolerability are already known. In recent years, thanks to manufacturers of herbal extracts and advanced extraction techniques, we are now able to obtain selected, standardized, titrated, and purified extracts.
The increasing use of Phyto therapeutic products as a complementary therapy to conventional medicine has led to much stricter controls over plantderived active ingredients, which were once largely overlooked. Evidence of this is the establishment of a Pharmacovigilance Centre to monitor any adverse reactions caused by phytotherapy products.
Today, Phytotherapeutic products are widely used both to combat symptoms related to various conditions and to support anti-aging therapies. This approach can help improve quality of life and, in some cases, slow the aging process, with noticeable aesthetic and subjective well-being benefits.
In Tuscany (Italy), where the company Medalpharma is based, the CERFIT (Regional Reference Centre for Phytotherapy) was established in May 2012 at the Careggi University
Hospital in Florence. It serves as a key center for clinical phytotherapy and integrative medicine.
How does this represent a breakthrough for improving people’s health?
Phytotherapy represents a breakthrough for several reasons. For starters, it is better accepted by individuals, as it is a more natural and less invasive approach, often preferred, when possible, over synthetic products. The active ingredients derived from natural sources are generally more compatible with the body’s physiological functioning.
Phytotherapy offers the possibility of achieving meaningful results over a longer period, but with a lower risk of serious side effects. It can also act preventively in individuals with high risk factors for developing certain disorders. Furthermore, it tends to cause less resistance and dependency and, in some cases, may allow for reduced dosages of certain medications. I can reiterate that phytotherapy is not a panacea, but it is a powerful ally in taking care of one’s health.
Are the phytotherapy supplements safe for consumption by patients?
Our supplements are safe, thoroughly tested, and made
with active ingredients carefully selected for their quality, dosages, and synergistic effects. At Medalpharma we have always looked at individuals holistically and considered all aspects—from lifestyle and nutrition to the presence of any medical condition and the age of the person. We acknowledge that every individual is imbued with unique characteristics, and we take all these into account. We promote healthy practices and encourage greater awareness of one’s well-being.
Are your supplements to be used for life once prescribed, or are they meant to be taken for a short time frame? Also, do these supplements impact prescription medication being taken by the patient?
Our supplements are used both as complementary treatments alongside conventional therapies for chronic and/or degenerative diseases, and to counteract age-related signs of aging. It is clear that in the case of chronic or degenerative conditions, we cannot speak of a cure since these are incurable diseases. However, both conventional and complementary therapies recommended in such cases aim to optimally manage symptoms and, in some instances, slow the progression of the disease.
At Medalpharma, given the chronic nature of these conditions, we always suggest two possible treatment approaches. The first is the use of “cyclical therapy,” and the second is known as “pulsed therapy.”
Cyclical therapy, also used in conventional medicine, involves administering specific active ingredients at regular intervals, followed by rest periods. This approach allows for long-term treatment without placing undue psychological or physical stress on the individual,
enabling the body to better tolerate and adapt to the treatment over time.
Pulsed therapy, on the other hand, as we define it, involves taking the same dosage of certain active ingredients every two or three days over an extended period. This method has also proven useful in terms of improving treatment tolerability.
Medalpharma’s extensive experience across various fields, from ophthalmology in humans to veterinary applications, and our focus is on supporting the healthy functioning of the circulatory, lymphatic, and nervous systems (all of which are at the root of many health issues), has allowed for the targeted and appropriate use of our products without interfering with the action of necessary prescription medications.
Can these supplements be purchased without a prescription?
Yes, absolutely. They are legally classified as over the counter (OTC) products, meaning they can be purchased without a medical prescription. However, we always recommend that individuals inform themselves properly before buying, especially regarding the real usefulness of taking a Phytotherapeutic product based on their personal health condition. The effectiveness of a phytotherapy product also depends on the synergistic action among the active ingredients used.
Would you say your products are reasonably priced? They can be reasonably priced when choosing products that strike a good
balance between quality and cost.
The price is primarily linked to the composition and dosage of the individual active ingredients. Naturally, achieving a real therapeutic effect requires the use of adequate dosages and carefully selected substances those that are titrated, standardized, and purified which involves a significant initial investment in the product. That said, the prices remain reasonable and aligned with the product’s quality. At Medalpharma, we have always operated on these fundamental principles: high-quality products offered at market-competitive prices.
How can people in the UAE buy Medalpharma products?
Currently, outside of Italy, Medalpharma products can only be purchased online through our website: www.medalpharma.it in the dedicated e-commerce section. However, we are actively working to obtain the necessary authorizations from the competent authorities in the UAE to supply the local market through pharmacies and health stores.
In conclusion, are there any parting comments you would like to leave with?
Today, phytotherapy is increasingly backed by scientific research and data that confirm its efficacy, making it a more modern and reliable discipline. However, phytotherapy medication must be used in consultation with your doctor.
For instance, many phytotherapy products act like powerful antioxidants. While antioxidants play an important role, oxidizing substances, within certain reference ranges, are also essential for the proper functioning of the immune system. Uncontrolled intake of antioxidants may impair the effectiveness of the body’s natural defense mechanisms.
For this reason, we always recommend that, before starting any phytotherapy-based treatment, individuals assesspossibly through specific tests - their endogenous and exogenous antioxidant levels, to determine the right combination and dosages that are most beneficial to the body. H
Modern Pharmaceutical Company (MPC) is proud to support the distribution of Casgevy, a pioneering gene therapy for sickle cell disease. As the first approved treatment of its kind in the UAE, this marks a major milestone in advanced healthcare delivery. Resuming a full schedule, after vacations, doesn’t have to mean a burnout. By building routines with purpose, balancing productivity and play, and tapping experts’ insights, families can embrace structure without losing joy. This school year, aim not just to keep pace, but to thrive.
Stress?
The return to daily life—school runs, office hours, packed calendars—can feel exhilarating… and overwhelming. As families settle back into routine, what matters most is not just how you survive this transition, but how you thrive in it, carving space for joy, health, and connection.
As you leave behind the call of the wild and the sound of music in the
hills and picturesque valleys, you must mentally prepare to embrace the regular routine of life.
HEALTH discovers that there is a fine art and science to the job of picking up the threads of life and resuming routines going by the advice of life coaches and psychologists
Christine Grove and Kelly Ann Allen, educationists and development psychologists from Monash University, Australia in
their tips for back-to-school, point out that children should be slowly eased back into routine prior to the end of vacation time.
Kids usually do not look forwards to slip back into punishing schedule. School books and uniforms must be bought, new tennis and after-school activity times must be determined for kids. As a working parent, you also have to deal with your own office budgets and targets to be chased. After the lazy mornings with friends and family while on vacation, setting the alarm to 5.30 am, waking up kids, preparing breakfasts and driving to the office can be a daunting task.
But it is all possible with proper advance planning, distribution of work amongst family members and some groundwork.
The Hidden Strain of Routine Shift
After free-flowing summers, switching gears into schedule-heavy days can trigger stress. According to Body and Soul Health Club, identifying key family concerns— time crunches, nutrition, stress— helps lay the groundwork for smoother transitions. Here are a few basic ground rules that if followed can go a long way in helping you ease back into routine.
Build Your Routine with Intent
1. Design Your Daily Blueprint
Outline a school- and work week plan. Body and Soul experts recommend fixing “nonnegotiables”—like family workouts, meal planning, or bedtime rituals— as cornerstones of your week
2. Micro Moves, Major Benefits
Sneak in short bursts—kid-friendly
morning stretches, midday walk breaks, evening family yoga. Even 10-minute movement snacks add up, improving mood and focus
Adapting sleep schedules well before the first morning matters. Gradually shift bedtime and screen curfews to align with school-week routines.
Life coaches say smoothening things out for the kids also helps parents to deal with their own postvacation blues while returning back to their work routines. The entire plan has to be done holistically.
Fuel Your RoutineMind, Body & Soul
Nutrition is a Brain Fuel. Quality meals support emotional regulation and focus. A diet rich in whole foods, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats sustains energy and nurtures mental resilience
Exercise regulates mood, relieves stress, and sharpens cognition. The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly something even simple routines can achieve.
Mindfulness, Connection, Play
Incorporate pauses for family check-ins and mental resets.
Psychologist Roger Walsh suggests play, nature walks, and social connection anchor mental health during change.
Enlist the Pros
Life coaches can help shape time management strategies and pacing.
Mental health experts guide stress-handling tools for both
parents and children.
Fitness trainers support sustainable routines—think afterschool family fun rather than forced workouts.
Nutritionists assist with strategic, balanced meal prep.
Bring It All Together: A Sample Day

As soon as the Adam family returned from their fun-filled trip to Europe, their joy was soured when their youngest family member, four-year old Katy, came down with high fever and chills. It started with the little one and soon all three kids in the family, the older Mary and Tim in their preteens, were down with fever.
It was a week before school reopening and their GP said, they had come
back with a fresh strain of influenza. Tina, their mother, had to extend her leave to care for her sick children and that ruined everyone’s holiday mood.
What happened with the Adam family is pretty much the case with many families returning from vacation. Flu is in the air and last year’s flu vaccine is ineffective with new strains. General Physicians are advising people to take the flu jab as
soon as possible to prevent falling ill.
As the UAE continues to welcome global travellers and residents return from their summer breaks, the risk of encountering new influenza strains is higher than ever. With flu season intensifying, understanding how to identify, manage, and prevent infection is critical for maintaining both personal and public health.
Dr. Kiran Kumar
Specialist Internal Medicine Thumbay University Hospital
Dr. Kiran Kumar explains:
“International travel exposes individuals to unfamiliar viral strains, especially from regions where different subtypes of influenza are circulating. These “foreign flu” strains may evade existing immunity, making returning residents more vulnerable—and more likely to spread the illness within their
Classic flu symptoms include:
Sudden onset of fever
Chills, fatigue, and muscle aches
Sore throat, dry cough, or runny nose
Headache and body pain
Unlike a common cold, the flu often comes quickly and intensely, potentially leading to serious complications, especially in children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions.
Speaking to HEALTH, Dr. Kiran further elaborated, “Flu vaccines are updated annually to match evolving strains. The latest quadrivalent vaccines offer protection against four major influenza viruses, including newly dominant variants. The UAE Ministry of Health strongly recommends yearly flu shots, especially for healthcare workers, teachers, pregnant women, and those

B oost Immunity Naturally
A balanced lifestyle can bolster your body’s natural defenses:
Eat vitamin-rich foods (C, D, zinc)
Get 7–8 hours of sleep
Stay physically active
Manage stress through relaxation techniques
Stay Home if Sick
To prevent community transmission, stay home if you experience flu symptoms. Seek medical attention if high fever, shortness of breath, or persistent pain develops.
Early intervention with antivirals like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) can reduce flu severity and duration—especially for high-risk individuals.
Most hospitals are equipped with expert physicians trained to identify flu symptoms early and manage cases using evidence-based protocols. These include
Walk-in flu clinics
Vaccination drives
Multilingual health consultations
On-site diagnostics and rapid flu testing
Flu may be in the air, but so is awareness and protection. With vigilance, vaccination, and expert care, you can reduce your risk and ensure a healthier season for yourself and your loved ones. Timely vaccination provides herd immunity, lowering the risk of threat from a new strain. Hence, it is important to get the flu jab, doctors advise.

As the UAE observes the National Immunization Month in August, it’s an opportune time to highlight one of the most crucial aspects of maternal and newborn health—antenatal vaccinations, which are not just a medical formality but a proven shield of protection for mother and fetus from serious, preventable diseases.
Dr. Amala Khopkar Nazareth Specialist in Gyenecology and Obstetrics, Emirates Specialty Hospital, Dubai
Expectant mothers have a risk of contracting some viral infections which can result in adverse pregnancy outcomes and raise the risk of maternal and fetal mortality.
According to the National Institute of Health, USA and The World Health Organization (WHO), maternal morbidity rates worldwide have gone up because pregnant women are often prone to contracting virus infections such as Influenza, Pertussis or whooping cough that is life threatening to her and to the fetus.
Keeping a pregnant woman’s immunity strong by protecting her from these preventable viral infections by administering inactivated vaccinations, can help not just the mother but also the
health of the fetus at birth.
Medically speaking, viruses cannot easily transmit from mother to fetus due to physical and immunological barriers at the maternal-fetal interface posing a restricted threat to the fetus and newborns. However, new virus strains have been able to engineer pathways through the placenta and therefore it is important that every expectant mother considers taking the jabs of non-live vaccines for
some of the common viral infections that she is likely to catch during her gestation period. This will go a long way in assuring good health for mother and child.
Dr. Amala Khopkar- Nazareth, specialist obstetrician and gynecologist practicing at the Emirates Specialty Hospital, Dubai, a vocal supporter of antenatal vaccines, told HEALTH, “Speaking from the perspective of global health of all women, maternal immunization is an essential strategy particularly in regions with high maternal and infant mortality rates. Antenatal vaccines not only protect the expectant mother from infectious diseases but also transfers this immunity to her fetus.”
Elaborating on the biggest stumbling block in getting expectant mothers to take the vaccinations, Dr. Amala explained, “Vaccine hesitancy is what most gynecologists encounter in women, and this refers to a reluctance to take an antenatal vaccine out of cultural biases or beliefs of unfounded fears of the fallout of the vaccine.”
Many mothers-to-be- are uncertain about the safety or necessity of vaccinations during this sensitive phase. Their GPs and attending gynecologists need to convince them and explain that modern medical science confirms that vaccines administered during pregnancy are not only safe but lifesaving—offering dual protection for both mother and baby.
Influenza Vaccine
28 - 34 weeks gestation
Rhesus Vaccination (Anti-D)
Routine prophylaxis at 28 and 34 weeks; or at least one dose after 28 weeks.
Vaccination during pregnancy isn’t just about protection for a few months—it lays the foundation for long-term immunity for both mother and child. It also reduces the risk of complications like preterm birth, low birth weight, and neonatal infections.
There is strong evidence-based healthcare and patient education available, and families must consult with their collaborating obstetricians, family physicians, and health educators, we support a culturally sensitive and informed approach to addressing vaccine hesitancy. Hospitals can organize the following for their patients to help them overcome unknown fears.
• Workshops for expectant mothers
• Multilingual information campaigns
• One-on-one consultations with experts
Immunization during pregnancy is an act of love, protection, and foresight. Let the month of August, which is the national Immunization month in the UAE, be a reminder to every young mother-to-be that protecting her baby begins not just at birth—but long before. H

28 and 34 weeks of gestation.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccine
32 to 36 weeks gestation.
Here’s a list of essential Antenatal Vaccines recommended during pregnancy
and Pertussis (Tdap)
• When? During every pregnancy, ideally between 27 and 36 weeks.
• Why? Protects mothers from tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough), and passes antibodies to the baby, offering protection in the first critical months after birth.
• When? During any trimester of pregnancy.
• Why? Pregnancy weakens the immune system, making flu complications more severe. The vaccine safeguards mother and baby through passive immunity.
• When: Routine prophylaxis at 28 and 34 weeks; or at least one dose after 28 weeks.
• Why : The Rh factor is a protein found on red blood cells. If a mother is Rh-negative (lacking this protein) and the baby is Rh-positive (carrying the protein), the mother's immune system may react to the fetal blood as foreign. The injection only protects the current pregnancy and the next one if the baby is Rh-positive

After earning her MD, she pursued an MSc and PhD in Reproductive and Developmental Sciences from the University of Edinburgh in 2010, one of the first Emirati women to achieve that milestone. Her medical journey included roles at Fakih IVF and Tawam Fertility Center.
Among her several roles, Dr. Nahla is also Director of Fertility Preservation, BournHall Fertility Centre, Al Ain; Consultant in Reproductive Medicine and Infertility, Mediclinic Al Jowhara Hospital; and Adjunct Associate Professor at both UAE University and
What truly distinguishes Dr. Nahla is her unwavering belief that fertility care must match scientific ingenuity with human compassion. She was among the first in the UAE to introduce VR/ AR, artificial intelligence, and digital tools into the fertility journey improving everything from ovarian rejuvenation planning to patient comfort during egg retrieval.
Even amid the pandemic’s challenges, she rolled out these innovations to keep patients safe and to ensure treatments remained warm, personalized, and precise.
“My approach in clinical practice has always been to create what I call a “sanctuary of understanding”. Before we discuss any medical procedures, I sit with my patients (really sit with them) and listen. I want to understand their story, their cultural background, their fears, and their dreams,” says Dr. Nahla.
“This isn’t just compassionate care; it’s essential medicine. The emotional state of our patients directly impacts treatment outcomes, and addressing their psychological well-being is as crucial as addressing their physical condition.”
Kazim’s Fertility Barza offers a holistic platform for fertility wellness: early detection, emotional support, and wellness services, all grounded in preventive science and aligned with the UAE’s goal of nurturing healthy future generations.
Dr. Nahla’s leadership hasn’t gone unnoticed. She’s received the prestigious Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum Award, been named a Top Healthcare Icon 2024, and earned nominations for Abu Dhabi’s Medical Distinction Award.
An active member of global bodies from the American Society of Reproductive Medicine to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology she’s both contributor and trailblazer.
In the lead-up to Emirati Women’s Day 2025, Dr. Nahla’s story feels urgent because she’s not only treating fertility, she’s transforming it. She’s taking advanced science and making it accessible, dignified, and empathetic. And in doing so, she is changing lives - one hopeful heartbeat at a time.
Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak President of IUCN and Managing Director of the MBZ Species Conservation Fund,
In a world fast losing touch with nature, Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak stands as a beacon of clarity and compassion. Born in 1979 in Abu Dhabi, she has crafted a career that blends Emirati pride with global ambition.
In September 2021, Razan Al Mubarak made history not just as the first president of the IUCN from West Asia, but also as only the second woman ever to lead the organization in its 75-year journey. Her leadership didn’t stop there. When the UAE hosted COP28, she stepped into the role of UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, using the platform to push for something she’s always believed in: making sure nature is no longer sidelined in global climate talks but recognized as a
vital part of the solution.
Razan’s environmental story took root in 2001, when she co-founded Emirates Nature–WWF, launching one of the UAE’s first major wildlife NGOs. She then steered the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund (MBZ Fund) from its inception in 2008 into a powerhouse grant making institution supporting close to 3,000 projects in nearly every country.
In 2011, she broke new ground by becoming the first woman Secretary General of Abu Dhabi’s Environment Agency (EAD), rising to Managing Director in 2019. Her leadership at EAD delivered landmark achievements—most notably the reintroduction of the scimitar-horned oryx into the wild in Chad.
In May 2025, IUCN’s Council formally endorsed her candidacy for a second term, a launchpad for deeper impact at the upcoming World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi this October
“Community is not merely about human connections. It is about the intricate web of relationships that sustain us all… This connection between community and conservation transcends
borders. When ecosystems thrive, communities thrive,” she underscores.
Her philosophy is simple yet profound: biodiversity isn’t just ecological; it’s cultural, spiritual, and essential for our shared future.
Her trailblazing work has earned her many honors: among Forbes Middle East’s “Middle East’s Sustainable 100” the WEF’s Young Global Leader, and a “Women in Business” award from the Abu Dhabi American Chamber of Commerce.
Academia has also recognized her impact recently: a 2025 honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow, reflecting the international esteem she commands.
Razan Al Mubarak embodies the global shift from talking about conservation to delivering it on the ground and across institutions. She shows that nature leadership isn’t just for scientists. It’s for diplomats, funders, and visionaries. As a bold voice in high level climate diplomacy, she invites the world to see nature not as a luxury, but as an imperative.
Her journey from Abu Dhabi to the helm of the planet’s largest environmental network reminds us: conservation is about people, places, and the shared possibility of a thriving planet.
I hope I will be an inspiration to
commercial flight for Etihad Airways. This historic occasion marked her as the first Emirati woman ever to become a commercial airline captain—a breakthrough milestone for a generation of women in aviation.
cadet cohort. After rigorous ground school and simulator training, she flew her first Airbus A320 to Amman in 2010. Year by year, she built experience moving up to Senior First Officer, and even piloting the ultra-large A380, becoming the first Emirati woman to do so.
On August 28, 2022 - Emirati Women’s Day - a trailblazing moment arrived in the skies above Abu Dhabi. Captain Aisha Al Mansoori, just 33 at the time, took command of her first
Raised in the UAE, Aisha was inspired by a sister who broke barriers long before her: Major Mariam Al Mansouri, the nation’s first female fighter pilot. Accompanying her sister to air shows kindled Aisha’s own fascination with flight. By age 18, her course was clear: she would join Etihad’s pioneering Cadet Pilot programme.
In October 2007, Aisha was one of just two Emirati women in her
“I am proud to be the first female Emirati to be a Captain in a commercial airline, and I hope I will be an inspiration to young women to follow this career path,” she said.
Flight may be her realm, but Aisha’s true purpose reaches far beyond. She often reflects on a defining lesson: the first time she stepped out to thank passengers, she realized the weight of their trust. That moment and those she now inspires define her.
In interviews she emphasizes resilience: managing long hours, irregular schedules, and continual training passion is her sustenance. And always, she urges young Emirati women: “Opportunities are open. All you need to do is seek it and take it.”
As we mark Emirati Women’s Day, Aisha’s story seems timeless, yet it’s only begun. She stands alongside a lineage of female pioneers in the UAE. From fighter jets to passenger airliners, she shows that ceilings are made to be shattered.
‘Do not be afraid of failure’
Amira Sajwani Managing Director of Sales & Development at DAMAC and founder of PRYPCO
One of the most respected names in the construction and real estate sector, Amira Sajwani is busy reshaping luxury living, real estate tech, and redefining what it means to be a woman in business.
As Managing Director of Sales & Development at DAMAC and founder of PRYPCO, she’s creating a new blueprint for property and empowerment.
Born into the Sajwani family, Amira grew up immersed in real estate. Her father, billionaire Hussain Sajwani, founder of DAMAC Properties, taught her from a young age that the sky isn’t the limit, but it is just the beginning. She earned a degree in Construction Project
Management from UCL and a master’s degree in finance from LSE grounding her with the skills to match her ambition.
Joining DAMAC after graduation, Amira cut her teeth in sales, marketing, and project development. By late 2022, she’d earned the role of Managing Director, overseeing end-to-end property development and guiding a network of thousands of agents.
She’s led initiatives like agent loyalty programs, digital engagement tools, and strategic partnerships ensuring DAMAC stays ahead in innovation and customer experience.
“Resilience is key,” she said in an interview recently.
“The entrepreneurial path is challenging, but perseverance, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning are essential.” She is also a firm believer in embracing each challenge as an opportunity for growth.
Practising what she preaches, Amira founded PRYPCO in October 2022 to transform property into a friction-free journey. Today, PRYPCO is a one-stop proptech ecosystem.
Amira wears many hatsbusinesswoman, daughter, wife, and mother. Her source of drive?
“My two daughters”, she has said,
a poignant reminder that every milestone is driven by love and legacy.
As an active advocate for women’s leadership, Amira champions diversity in real estate, speaking at major forums. Through her own ventures, she opens doors mentoring women and simplifying a formerly complex market with user-friendly platforms.
One of the most important lessons she has learnt in life, she has said, is learning to deal with failure.
“There’s a lot I and my brothers have learned from my father, but if you were to ask about the most impactful, number one would be to not be afraid of failure,” she said.
Amira’s influence stretches beyond balance sheets. With Amali Properties, a sister venture she co-founded, she’s setting new standards in ultra-luxury living, with projects like Amali Island offering bespoke villas designed for the discerning. Meanwhile, on Shark Tank Dubai, she mentors startups, championing innovation and entrepreneurship.
This Emirati Women’s Day, Amira’s story shines as a beacon of possibilities. She proves Emirati women don’t just belong; they’re rewriting the narrative.
Aysha Al Obeidli Culinary prodigy blending heritage and innovation
At an age when most children are trying to master their multiplication tables, Aysha Al Obeidli was busy at a different kind of table - slicing, stirring, and seasoning her way into the culinary spotlight. Today, this teenage prodigy is not only one of the youngest Emirati chefs to gain recognition but also a passionate advocate for her country’s rich culinary heritage reimagined through a bold, global lens. She first captured national attention in 2018, clinching the title of “Youngest Emirati Chef” after winning KidZania Dubai’s Minichef competition. Since then, Aysha has been quietly but confidently turning up the heat, both in kitchens and in conversations about the future of Emirati cuisine.
“My vision for Emirati cuisine is for it to take its rightful place on the global culinary map not just as a novelty, but as a respected, celebrated cuisine with depth, technique, and soul.”
From classic staples like machboos and harees to beloved bites like luqaimat, Aysha brings her own distinctive touch - sometimes subtle, sometimes bold. Imagine saffronscented desserts with French patisserie finish or local rice dishes paired with globally inspired sauces. “Fusion lets me tell stories, our stories, in a new language,” she says.
But this is no mere experiment in flavours. Aysha’s work is deeply intentional. She’s cooked for audiences at global gatherings like the World Government Summit, collaborated with retail giants including Marks & Spencer and Carrefour, and taken centre stage to speak about her mission. Her dishes are more than meals; they’re cultural conversations, artfully plated with purpose.
Aysha showcased Emirati cuisine at the Seoul Culture Bridge Festival in Korea, serving traditional dishes to over 1,000 visitors daily. She created the first-ever UAE-flavored popcorn at the United Nations in Geneva, alongside Loumi iced tea and Karak. She crafted a special dessert for Etihad Airways’ in-flight menu during the UAE National Day, and participated in high-profile events such as the Open Fire Food Festival hosted by Steve Harvey in Abu Dhabi.
“Food is identity,” she says simply. And in her hands, it becomes a powerful expression of who she is and aspires to be. Influenced
by culinary icons like Italian chef Massimo Bottura, Aysha approaches food as both craft and narrative. “He inspired me to see food not just as taste, but as memory, emotion, and innovation.”
That philosophy underpins her long-term ambitions: a Michelinstarred restaurant chain where Emirati cuisine is not just served but celebrated, and a culinary institute that nurtures young talent and preserves the heart of the culture.
Aysha’s journey is one of talent and tenacity, but also of purpose. “This is just the beginning,” she says. “I see myself continuing to push boundaries, not just as a chef, but as a storyteller for my culture.”
Her drive is especially resonant this Emirati Women’s Day. “Young women play a powerful role in both preserving and evolving cultural traditions especially through cuisine,” Aysha reflects. “We’re the bridge between generations. We carry the knowledge passed down to us, but we also bring fresh perspectives and new ideas. On Emirati Women’s Day, it’s a reminder that our voices matter - in kitchens, in communities, and on global stages. By honoring our roots while confidently reshaping them, we’re not just keeping traditions alive, we’re making sure they grow, thrive, and stay relevant for the future.”
Inspired by the success Emirati women, Indian expatriate Faridah Ajmal, takes a leaf out of their experiences to script her own success.
Was belonging to a family of perfumers your inspiration to be one yourself?
My family lends its name to an important perfume brand renowned globally. Being the daughter-inlaw and married to Mohammed Fakhruddin Ajmal who was a pioneer for the brand for GCC market. However, my inspiration to create and blend perfumes goes way beyond the family or my marriage into the family. During my teenage years, I was fascinated by perfumes which my brothers would gift me whenever they visited India. These blends and the fragrances sparked my interest and triggered a quest in me to learn more about them. So, my passion and eagerness to explore the process of
perfume creation began early and laid the foundation of what you see today.
What is the sensibility you bring in understanding what men and women really want in the world of fragrances?
When we talk about fragrances and the choice made by men and women, it involves a profound exploration of the olfactory sense or nerves. When you explore you learn, and I learnt that creating women centric fragrance is a challenge as opposed to male fragrances. This is because women generally tend to have a more sensitive and accurate sense of smell than men. Studies have shown that women often outperform men in identifying and distinguishing between different odors. For women its creation of softer and delicate blends which must still smell great and that’s a challenge. While creating a fragrance for men, I consider the masculinity factor, choosing strong yet subtle fragrances and blends
What are the challenges in your journey and how have you overcome it?
Born in a conservative and yet progressive family and marrying into a strictly conservative family was the biggest challenge to venture into an independent business. Being a mother of two lovely daughters, I focused on giving them the maximum time and personal attention. However, I kept my dream alive of creating a highend luxury brand and continued to nurture my passion that eventually went into the creation of my tagline “Nurturing Passion”.
The UAE is very pro-women; how has it supported your journey?
Having lived in the UAE for over 30 years, and built my perfumery business from ground-up, I’ve seen how deeply the country values and supports women entrepreneurs. From the start, I found the environment here having a unique combination of respect for tradition with a real drive to innovation. In the perfume industry, which is rooted in regional heritage, there was not only room to grow but active encouragement to lead. The communities of Emirati ladies in UAE doesn’t just speak about empowering women but also back with it with real opportunities and celebrate success.
What is your vision and plans for expansion?
My vision is to create and sustain a luxury niche perfume brand starting with UAE and then gradually taking it to the different parts of the world. I want to see the brand in the top ten perfume brands in the next five years. As for my mission, I want to use a substantial part of the profits in financing and setting up a charitable foundation for the destitute and support them.
What is your message to other women?
Every woman's success should be an inspiration to another. We're strongest when we cheer and inspire each other on.

Q: What is the best treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults which may have been undiagnosed / untreated in childhood.
ADHD is a neuro-developmental disorder that begins before birth and manifests in signs and symptoms in a child before the age of 12. There’s no blood test for ADHD, so a clinician determines whether a child has ADHD based on the information from the child, school and the parents, along with additional rating tools. It is a condition resulting from low dopamine levels, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Still, the cause of this could be genetic, or environmental factors like exposure to maternal smoking, toxins, premature birth and so on. The answers are not entirely clear, and further research is ongoing.
If the signs and symptoms of ADHD had been missed in
childhood by parents and teachers, the struggles show up as an adult in one’s work and relationships. The key symptoms in a child include inattention that may appear as distractibility, glazing over conversations, forgetting easily, difficulty following through instructions, and difficulty retaining information when reading or listening in class. Another set of symptoms that are more dominant in boys is hyperactivity. For instance, fidgeting, being constantly “on edge”, talking excessively, and difficulties in staying still
The main line of treatment for ADHD in Adults is medication. Stimulant and non-stimulant medication for ADHD is designed to optimize the brain’s neurochemical called dopamine. Medications help improve mental attention and focus which is a key issue in ADHD. This in turn reduces mental fatigue and fog and lessens task paralysis and procrastination.
Dr. Adel Al Sisi
Chief Medical Officer, Prime Healthcare Group, Consultant Intensivist, Chair of ICU Department
Q: Recently one of my close friends was diagnosed with E-coli infection that would have killed him had he not been rushed to hospital. When does a severe e-coli infection require roundthe-clock medical care in the ICU and what is the treatment required for such a treatment in intensive care?
Escherichia Coli or E-coli is a group of bacteria that can cause infections in your gut (GI tract), urinary tract and other parts of your body. One can contract this deadly infection through contaminated food such as eggs with possible E-Coli bacteria or water, or through another infected person or animal. What is challenging is diagnosing it as initially the abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
is like any stomach infection or food poisoning. Many a time, the bacterium might pass through to your gut and live there as a parasite for long and only manifest with symptoms later. However, lethal strains of E-Coli can impact vital organs and prove to be fatal, requiring immediate intensive care treatment.
ICU Treatment for Severe E-coli Infection can Include:
• IV Fluids – To manage dehydration and maintain blood pressure.
• Electrolyte management –Crucial, especially if kidneys are affected.
• Renal replacement therapy (dialysis) – In cases of acute kidney injury or HUS.
• Blood transfusions – If hemolytic anemia develops.
A strong infection of a particularly lethal strain of E-coli
may require close monitoring which includes continuous monitoring of heart rate, BP, urine output, and oxygenation.
It may require the administering of antibiotics under proper and cautious monitoring, particularly the E-coli strain (Shiga – toxin producing) can result in worsening the outcome with some antibiotics and some infections require targeted antibiotics.
The treatment also will involve administering oxygen, pain management and possible use of vasopressors if the patient turns hypotensive (low blood pressure).
It is critical to have an early recognition of the possible complications and patients are advised not to self-medicate with antibiotics if they suspect an E-coli infection. ICU treatment focuses heavily on supportive care, not just antibiotics.
All about fermentation of foods and its biochemical reaction adding super nutrition, transforming ordinary food items into pro-biotic, antioxidant powerhouses
The process of fermentation includes the addition of yeast or natural bacteria to foods such as yoghurt, picked vegetables, breads, salads, lentil or soya paste and even vegetable and fruit-based drinks, something our forefathers have known all along, For thousands of years, in civilizations around the world from Mesopotamia, to Babylon, to India and the Orient, fruits, vegetables and lentils were preserved.
The process of fermentation breaks down the sugars in the food, gets it into phased of pre-digestion, introduces microorganisms and pro-biotics that have a powerful impact on our gut, assisting and aiding
digestion and improving the gut flora. This not only accounts for better immunity, better nutrition absorption but also better moods and stronger neural connections.
Traditionally fermented foods were consumed for thousands of years, in all civilizations around the world. Be it Kimchi or Kombucha or kefir, miso, kanji and sauerkraut…. From Korea, to Japan, to Morrocco, India and Europe, people have known about the micronutrient and probiotic power of these foods.
Speaking to HEALTH, Nutritionist and clinical dietician , Saumya Mishra elaborated, “Foods such as yogurt, kombucha, khimchi
and sauerkraut have undergone controlled microbial fermentation which not only enhances their tastes, texture and flavors but provides pre-biotics and pro-biotics that greatly enhance our gut microbiome, immunity and enhance our hair and skin quality.
Clinical studies have pointed out that the process of fermentation enhances food preservation, inhibits harmful bacteria, and increases bioavailability of key nutrients like vitamins C, B12, and K. It also boosts antioxidant levels, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, and produces organic acids like lactic acid and acetic acid, which influence both flavor and potential health effects.”

While dining out is a great and accepted trend, what is catching on these days, with the advent of Cloud Kitchens is “dining in”. Dubai just had a flavour upgrade with the addition of House of Biryan with an avantgarde acronym – HOB - that brings a contemporary twist to kebabs, dum biryanis, gravies, breads and desserts.
HOB has opened cloud kitchens, both in Mirdif and in JVC as well, to provide you with a very good excuse for dining in the comfort of your home with their delectable orders.
Ideal for families, young couples and busy professionals, HOB gives you the chance to Build your own Biryani (BYOB) bowl with bold flavours, sizzling fresh, as though it’s straight out of the cooking pan and on your plate!
This essentially means ordering your favourite meals, creating your own biryani, your way or curating an
array of mouth-watering multicourse dishes in the ambience of your home. HOB has some heart stealing collection of signature dishes, or you have the option of BYOB – Build your own Biryani. Whatever you opt for, the guarantee is relishing the flavours in the relaxed ambience of family and friends at home. That is the best value that money can buy, providing you the best of both worlds. In other words, home comfort with curated cuisine of your choice.
Ordering sumptuous spread for five with the complete four-five course wasn’t a challenge as we were spoiled for choices. For a kebab binge we ordered chicken and mutton seekh kebabs, the mutton galauti and mushroom galauti. All of them provided an absolute melt-in the mouth, exotically spiced experience that set the gourmet mood of the evening.
As we played dumb charades and cards, these appetizers marked the perfect beginning to our evening. Next, we ordered the main course which was a prolonged affair. Some wanted breads and gravies while two biryani lovers wouldn’t have anything but the aromatic biryanis. So, we ordered the butter chicken and mutton rogan josh accompanied with tawa garlic nans. The mutton slow cooked, steeped in the rogan josh gravy was a delight to dig into, while the chicken gravy turned out to be generously buttered to a creamy photo-finish. The garlic nans added the perfect rustic touch as we tucked in to the creamy boneless chicken pieces. The raitas, salads and chutneys provided the
right accompaniment to a royal meal. For some time, all games and play were suspended as we savoured the fresh flavours of the food and tucked in some perfectly cooked chicken and meat curries.
It was a long evening of fun and chatter and after another round of boisterous games, we were ready for the biryanis.
While there was a long list to choose from, we ordered their tantalizing showstopper – the Bohri style, slowcooked lamb dum biryani, a malai chicken biryani, and for a change of palette a delicious vegetable bohri-style biryani layered with well-seasoned, sauteed seasonal vegetables, garnished with strands of saffron and golden fried, crunchy onion juliennes. The raitas and chutneys only enhanced the flavour. The lamb biryani, slow cooked with premium Australian lamb, blended with saffron, kewra water and caramelized onion was too exquisite, hitting all the right tastebuds while the creamy chicken biryani, delicately tempered with the right heat of aromatic spices, was another implosion of taste in our mouths.
The meal was rounded off with soft, warm and rich Gulab jamuns and lip-smacking kunafa cheesecake, a combination of crunchy golden vermicelli-coated velvety core of the cake that made it a perfect East-meets middle East combination.
Each dish presented a unique exploratory challenge on our culinary journey with HOB creating an unforgettable experience, leaving us craving for a repeat experience soon. HOB, without a doubt is a gamechanger in biryani dine-in experience one customized bowl at a time.
