Gulf Medical University welcomed 1189 new students from 111 nationalities during the 27th White Coat Ceremony, strengthening our multicultural academic ecosystem. We launched six new academic programs across bachelor’s, master’s, diploma and PhD levels, and received approval for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, set to begin soon. We signed new partnerships to secure internships and job placements for GMU graduates and are preparing for the Spring 2026 intake, opening in February.

Our Aspire to Be Doctors program begins again in December, inspiring young learners toward medical careers.

GMU hosted the largest Medical & Science Exhibition, engaging 22,000 students on campus and online. We inaugurated the region’s most advanced Simulation Center spanning Medicine, Dentistry, Rehabilitation, Nursing and soon Veterinary Medicine in Dubai. Our new Clinical Simulation and Advanced Exam Centers now support over 200+ digital exam seats. To further support innovation, the AED 3 million Thumbay Research Grant deadline has been extended to December 15 2025, and we look forward to our graduation ceremony 2025 on November 20.

This year our healthcare division, strengthened global collaboration by launching the Marhaba Surgeons Program, welcoming specialists from around the world as visiting consultants and

adjunct faculty with special privileges and opportunities to introduce certificate and diploma programs. We opened the Advanced LASIK and Eye Surgery Unit at Thumbay University Hospital, and under the One Health initiative launched our Veterinary Clinic in Sharjah — now a trusted destination for advanced pet care and grooming, successfully managing complex clinical cases.

Our rehabilitation network expanded with three pioneering services like Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Wheelchair Transfer Support Vehicle, We announced the International Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery Conference and Awards, set for November 16, 2025. Begin the New Year with a Healthier Mind

Russell Hemmings True wellbeing starts not with resolutions, but with quiet choices that bring peace to the mind and meaning to each day. Dubai-based cognitive-behavioral hypnotherapist Russell Hemmings offers some tips.

Every January, people make plans to change their bodies to eat better, exercise more, lose weight. But what if, this year, you focused on changing your mind instead?

The truth is, mental wellbeing doesn’t come from grand resolutions.

It grows from the small, consistent choices that calm the nervous system, quiet the noise, and restore a sense of meaning to everyday life. Here are five simple ways to start the year feeling grounded and mentally strong.

Don’t chase perfect aim for progress.

Most resolutions fail because they demand too much, too soon. Real, lasting change happens when you start small and stay consistent. If you want to exercise more, begin with ten minutes a day. If you want to meditate, start with just a few breaths. The goal isn’t perfection - it’s gentle, steady progress.

Protect your quiet moments.

Modern life rewards constant motion, yet the mind heals in

stillness. Give yourself permission to slow down. A few minutes of deep breathing before work, a quiet walk at lunchtime, or a phone-free evening once a week can make a profound difference. Calm isn’t something you find; it’s something you create.

Reconnect with real people.

We’re more connected than ever but often lonelier than we admit. True human connection like talking, listening, sharing - regulates the mind and body far more effectively than any app. Make time for genuine conversations with those who lift your spirit and remind you of what really matters.

Set emotional boundaries Not every problem is yours to fix. Learn to notice when you’re overextending yourself and give yourself permission to say no. Protecting your emotional energy isn’t selfish - it’s essential.

Boundaries create space for peace, balance, and deeper relationships.

Keep gratitude in focus The human mind naturally leans toward what’s wrong. Gratitude helps rebalance that perspective. Whether it’s a kind gesture, a calm morning, or the simple realization that you’ve made it through another year acknowledging the good, rewires your brain for optimism and resilience.

The new year doesn’t need to be a revolution. It can be a gentle reset - a reminder that wellbeing isn’t about doing more but about doing what truly matters with calm intention.

Small Moves, Big Gains

Muhammad Jaseem Fitness expert, exercise professional and body sculptor Dubai-based, Muhammad Jaseem suggests how everyday choices can transform your physical fitness regime in the new year.

Jaseem believes that fitness and workout should not be a chore but something that you integrate into your daily life. He shares a few small but powerful pointers that can really make a difference to your fitness. He isn’t talking about grueling gym sessions or rigid diets. His approach is refreshingly simple: add movement to your daily routine in smart, sustainable ways.

Take the stairs, not the escalator “This one’s easy,” Jaseem says with a laugh. “Choose stairs instead of the escalator.” He admits most of us instinctively head for the escalator because we’re too lazy to walk. “But think about it, each time you take the stairs, you’re giving your body a mini workout.

It’s a trick, really. Just do it twice a week to begin with. You’ll feel the difference.” Climbing stairs, he explains, strengthens your lower body, improves stamina, and burns calories - all without needing a gym membership.

Park farther, walk more “Here’s another trick and I really like this one,” he says. “Don’t park

your car right next to your office or building. Instead, park a little farther away.”

That short walk from your car to your office can make a surprising difference. “It might be just two minutes, five minutes, or even eight but it gets your body moving,” he says. “You’re not wasting time; you’re investing in your health.”

Walking, he points out, improves circulation, relieves stress, and boosts focus before you even start work.

Don’t sit too long — move every 30 minutes If you spend your day glued to a chair, Jaseem has a clear message: move. “Sitting for long hours pushes your body in a bad way,” he says.

“So, every 25 to 35 minutes, get up.

Take a quick walk, grab a glass of water, stretch your neck, roll your shoulders, move your ankles… anything that gets your joints active.” These microbreaks not only help your posture but also refresh your mind, making you more productive throughout the day.

Mix up your workouts Jaseem believes in balance. “Some people do only weight training,

others stick to cardio or aerobics,” he says. “But the best approach?

Combine everything.”

He suggests mixing strength training, cardio, bodyweight exercises, and even light aerobics. “When you combine them, you build stamina, strength, and endurance together, and that’s what fitness eally means.”

Turn breaks into mini workouts Most of us use our lunch breaks to scroll through Instagram or check messages. You need to rethink that.

“If you’ve got an hour for lunch, use part of it to walk,” he suggests.

“Walk for 5 - 10 minutes before or after eating. It helps digestion and adds to your daily step count.”

He also recommends using a step counter app to track your progress.

“Set a target — maybe 10,000 steps a day. Even if you don’t hit it right away, keep moving towards it.”

How to keep in great fiscal health!

Pawan Kumar Chaudhary Earning a five-figure salary is not enough, how you structure your spending and manage to eke out sensible savings, matters a lot. The art of building wealth is not just plain earning but also in keeping it.

UAE-based finance and investment specialist Pawan Kumar Chaudhary offers tips on how you can remain financially robust in the new year.

Budgets are not just for big-ticket spending Budgets work well with personal or home finance. It is important to keep track of your income and spending and have good financial discipline. Traditionally, amongst the more popular budget methods is the 50/30/20 rule (50% to be spent on needs, 30% on wants, 20% savings).

Stick to what suits your pocket and style, but budget you must. Once you can track everything and keep it in plain sight it might become easier for you to build up on robust fiscal health.

Never let your financial priorities out of sight This includes the mandatory spending that you cannot do without each month as well as the debts you need to clear. Allocate sums for that first before planning any excess spending.

So, at the beginning of the month, set aside a mandatory spending fund for house rent, your car mortgage, kid’s school fees, groceries, medicines, and fuel expenses. Set aside a small

amount towards clearing off your other debts – this could be a small loan from a family member, or friend, extra borrowing on your credit card… make it a point to pay it off in instalments and do not let a mountain of debt pile up and overwhelm you.

Create an emergency fund Think of this as filling a pot with water by adding drops of it every month. So, create an emergency fund where you might just set aside a small amount per month. At the end of the year, this will amount to something that you can place in a fixed deposit scheme in the bank. Year on year, keep adding the amount to this fund regularly. Let this fund be sacrosanct, meaning do not touch it unless it is a real emergency such as a sudden ill-health episode, house repair, or sudden travel overseas. Have a fair idea of what an emergency means to you. Typically, emergency funds ought to cover about 6-9 months of essential household expenses.

Investment and wealth build-up Establish financial objectives covering a timeframe. This could be building up a corpus for the children’s higher education over a 10–15-year time frame, your retirement planning and so on. Start with a systematic investment plan in line with your objectives and risk tolerance, such as investments in mutual funds and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).

Supplement this with top-ups and lump sum investments wherever possible. This will give you added gains from the power of compounding over a long-term. Develop an assetallocation framework, preferably with

a financial consultant, diversifying the investments in fields such as fixed income assets, real estate, cash deposits, gold-silver investments.

The actual returns are linked to proper asset allocation in addition to specific investments.

Try and control your spending Impulse is good thing to test your reflexes but not always so, especially when you recklessly splurge on an expensive dress, piece of jewelry, eating out, partying beyond your means or going on fancy holidays. It is always better to be conservative about your spending and not get carried away by the need to keep up with the Joneses.

Find small ways to save daily, such as using carpool, public transport for travelling to work (you will be surprised by the money you save in fuel, road tolls, parking expenses, apart from the regular wear and tear of your car). Have coffee oncein-a-while at a café; learning to make coffee like a professional barista at home and sipping it on your veranda or patio will save you the regular expense of a restaurant.

Soumya Mishra The New Year often arrives with ambitious health resolutions — most of which fade by February because they are either unrealistic or not rooted in physiology. Good nutrition is not about perfection; it’s about consistency of fundamentals.

If you want better energy, healthier weight, glowing skin, deeper sleep and a stronger immune system through 2026, Soumya Mishra, nutritionist and dietitian suggests starting with these science-backed dietary resolutions:

Prioritize Protein in Every Main Meal Most adults, especially women, unknowingly under-eat protein.

As a result, they struggle with cravings, unstable energy and slow metabolism. Aim for a palm-sized portion of real food protein — eggs, poultry, fish, lentils, tofu, paneer or Greek yogurt — at all three main meals. Protein improves satiety, supports lean muscle mass and keeps blood sugar steady, which is key for hormonal balance in midlife.

Eat Fiber from Seasonal Plants, Daily Your gut microbiome thrives on plant diversity, not calorie restriction. Include 8–10 servings of colorful, seasonal fruits and vegetables each day to feed beneficial gut bacteria. A thriving microbiome influences mood, digestion, immunity and even

weight regulation. Think: warm vegetable soups, leafy greens, root vegetables and fresh herbs — nature’s pharmacy on a plate.

Choose Real Vitamin C, not Just Tablets Vitamin C is far more than “immunity support.” In its natural form, it comes packaged with polyphenols and enzymes that enhance absorption and cellular repair. Gooseberry, citrus fruits, berries, guava and moringa are powerful whole-food sources that strengthen the skin barrier, reduce inflammation and improve collagen synthesis.

Dubaibased, a Carnatic music guru, Renuka Parameswar Sharma journey of strength, survival and hope creates strong awareness for all in the community.

My mother who had been diagnosed with it at 60 was a survivor. But here I was just 46 and receiving the diagnosis that said the cancer had impacted my lymph nodes as well,” she recalled in her conversation with HEALTH. For as long as she can remember, music has been the rhythm of Renuka and it was that same music — her lifelong companion — that became her anchor.

It’s been over a year since Renuka’s battle with stage three breast cancer began. It was January 2024, this Carnatic music teacher recalls vividly.

It all started with intense pain in her breast which she first dismissed as a fall out of an

Through grueling rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and surgery she underwent, she battled fear and fatigue, music kept her soul alive. Teaching, listening, composing became her way of coping, healing, and reclaiming herself. “Music truly healed me,” she says quietly.

“My classes, my work, and most

importantly, my family — they all gave me the strength to come back.”

Today, Renuka stands tall as a cancer warrior, teacher, and inspiration — a woman who turned pain into purpose and melody into medicine.

“I have completed chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. It’s been quite a journey — first chemo, then radiation, and now I’m on regular follow-ups and medication. I go for periodic checkups, and I can proudly say I’ve crossed the most difficult phase. Staying positive has been my biggest strength. Having gone through such a tough time, I now feel I can face anything. I’m slowly regaining my strength and hope. “As I always say — this too shall pass.”

The Treatment “I underwent eight cycles of chemotherapy. Mine was a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer, and the chemo for it was one of the hardest. By the seventh cycle, I developed severe bone weakness and had to use a wheelchair. I couldn’t walk and often felt like giving up. But I told myself — I’ve already completed seven, I just need to finish one more.

Somehow, I found the strength to go through the final session.

Radiation, compared to chemo, was easier, though I did experience some burning under my arm from the 25 sessions. But I got through it.”

“Technically, I can say I’m cancer-free, but doctors prefer to use the term ‘no evidence of disease.’ Since my cancer was grade three and had spread to my lymph nodes, recurrence is still possible. That’s why I continue with medication. But I try to live a healthy life, stay positive, and keep myself active.

“My biggest motivation has been my work — my music and my students. During chemotherapy, I would be bedridden for about 10 days after each session. But as soon as I regained some energy, I’d resume my classes. I managed my teaching schedule around the treatment — taking classes when I felt better and resting when I needed to. My students and their parents were incredibly understanding and supportive.

Music truly healed me. My classes, my work, and most importantly, my family — they all gave me the strength to come back. My family kept encouraging me to continue doing what I love. That kept me going.”

“Of course, in the beginning, I was terrified. When I was first diagnosed with grade three, stage three cancer, I didn’t know how long I had. My son had just started college, and my daughter was in her board exams. All I wanted was to live another 10 or 15 years to see them grow.

Today, I am not shy anymore. I want to share my story and help others.”

“From being a simple, conservative music teacher, I’ve become bolder, and a more courageous woman. Cancer changed me — it made me fearless.

Recently on November 8, 2025, Renuka’s dream project - a large choir with 300 participants, performed at Indian High School, Dubai successfully, a feat that won her accolades and appreciation from all. “Music gives me confidence, satisfaction, and purpose — it makes me forget the pain and focus on the joy of living.

But then I thought — my mother survived cancer too. She was diagnosed at 65; I got it at 45. So what? I decided not to live in fear.

Instead, I learned to face it. That shift in mindset helped me build resilience.

We women face so many challenges in life not just cancer. I told myself, I can overcome this too. And I did.”

Early detection is the key to survival This is the constant message being disseminated to every woman globally.

Screen, screen and screen. Start the screening from the age of 40, do a self-examination in the shower, go for detailed investigation in case you suspect something, and if there is any genetic history in the family, go for more diverse investigation every year.

As per Prof Dr Humaid Al Shamsi, Founder and Director of the Medical Oncology Service at Burjeel Medical City, breast cancer has become the most commonly diagnosed cancer type in the world. His research published in JCO Global Oncology journal in January 2023, states that it is estimated that there were 2.26 million new cases of Breast Cancer and almost 685,000 deaths from it, worldwide in 2020.

Breast Cancer in the UAE If diagnosed in stage 0 the chances of survival are nearly 98 per cent for women. Dr Shamsi further reiterated that UAE also reflected the same Nov/Dec 2025

diagnosis as the world. “In the UAE, BC comprises around a third of all female cancers and remains the number one cause of cancer -related mortality. It tends to present earlier in the UAE population. The median age is 48 years and nearly 21.5 per cent of the women diagnosed with breast cancer fall in the age group of 30-40 years,” said Dr Shamsi.

What women should do?

If you have a genetic history of cancers and specifically breast cancer, oncologists advise screening to begin by 30 years of age, otherwise, opt for annual screening after the age of 40. Women need to be super alert, and well informed and are advised to confer with their gynecologist for a six-monthly check-up. They must conduct selfbreast examination regularly and take action the moment they

Different Types of Breast Cancers According to the global awareness organization breastcancer.org, breast cancer usually begins either in the cells of the lobules, which are milkproducing glands or in the ducts, the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple.

There are invasive and noninvasive varieties.

Invasive breast cancer When breast cancer is called invasive (or infiltrating), it means it has spread into the surrounding breast tissue. The two most common types of invasive breast cancer are defined by where in the breast they begin to grow: Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC): This is invasive breast cancer that starts in the milk ducts, the tubes that carry milk from the lobules to the nipple.

It is the most common type of breast

cancer; about 80% of all breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas.

Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC): This is invasive breast cancer that starts in the lobules, the glands in the breast that produce milk. It is the second most common type of breast cancer; about 10% of all invasive breast cancers are invasive lobular carcinomas.

Some types of invasive breast cancer have features that affect how they develop and how they are treated: Triple-negative breast cancer is an aggressive type of invasive breast cancer that tests negative for estrogen

receptors and progesterone receptors and doesn’t have extra HER2 proteins. About 12% of all invasive breast cancers are triple-negative.

Triple-positive breast cancer tests positive for estrogen receptors and progesterone receptors and has too many HER2 proteins. About 10% of all breast cancers are triple-positive.

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and aggressive type of invasive breast cancer. About 1% of all breast cancers in the United States are inflammatory breast cancer.

Micrometastases are tiny groups of breast cancer cells that have traveled from the breast to some other area of the body, particularly to the lymph nodes under the arm. Doctors look for micrometastases in the lymph nodes in the breast area because research shows micrometastases mean the breast cancer has a higher risk of spreading and may need different treatments than breast cancer without micrometastases.

Metastatic breast cancer, also called stage IV breast cancer, is invasive breast cancer that has spread (metastasized) to parts of the body away from the breast, such as the bones, liver, lungs, or brain. Breast cancer can come back in another part of the body months or years after the original treatment (called a metastatic recurrence), but some people are initially diagnosed with metastatic disease (called de novo metastatic breast cancer).

Recurrent breast cancer is also an invasive category breast cancer reappears months or years after treatment. Breast cancer can recur in the same breast (local recurrence), nearby lymph nodes in the armpit or collarbone (regional recurrence), or in another part of the body, (metastatic or distant recurrence).

Male breast cancer is rare, but it does happen. Fewer than 1% of all breast cancers are diagnosed in men. Most male breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas.

Obliterating fear of breast cancer with new medicine

Paget disease of the breast is a rare form of breast cancer where cancer cells collect in or around the nipple.

Breast angiosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that starts in the cells lining the blood or lymph vessels of the breast.

There are also five main molecular subtypes of invasive breast cancer based on the genes in the cancer tumor. The molecular subtype of a breast cancer can affect how the cancer is treated.

Non-invasive breast cancer When breast cancer is called noninvasive (or in situ) it means it has not spread beyond the breast tissue where it started. Non-invasive breast cancers are also called precancers. There are two main types of non-invasive breast cancer: Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS), is an early-stage cancer where the malignant cells are confined to the milk ducts and have not spread to surrounding breast tissue. It is often found during a screening mammogram and may not cause symptoms. While not lifethreatening on its own. Oncologists advise treatment so that it does not turn invasive.

Lobular Carcinoma In Situ (LCIS): This involves abnormal cells growing in the lobules, or milkproducing glands. It is technically not considered cancer but a noncancerous change that indicates an increased risk for developing invasive breast cancer later on.It tends to remain in the lobules and does not spread.

Once diagnosed in time, it can be treated.”

Why Women Need to Take

Heart Health Seriously For decades, heart disease has worn the face of a man. The image of someone clutching his chest in pain has become a familiar shorthand for a heart attack.

Yet heart disease is just as much a woman’s concern if not more. It is, in fact, the number one cause of death among women worldwide, surpassing even cancer.

Studies find cardiovascular disease is responsible for about 30% of deaths in women each year over twice as many as those caused by all forms of cancer combined.

Dr. Brajesh Mittal, Senior consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Deputy Medical Director of Medcare Hospital, Dubai, has seen this reality up close.

“Heart disease is the number one cause of death in women worldwide,” he underscores. “The tragedy is that it’s also one of the most preventable.”

The most common heart disease among women is coronary artery disease (CAD) — a condition where cholesterol and fatty deposits build up in the arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart. But unlike men, who often experience the classic, dramatic symptoms of crushing chest pain, women’s signs tend to whisper rather than shout.

“Women often have subtler symptoms - fatigue, breathlessness, dizziness, or even a vague chest discomfort,” says Dr. Mittal. “It’s easy to dismiss these as stress, overwork, or just part of daily life.”

Dr. Mittal’s Tips for Women Women need to be proactive in protecting their hearts and, by extension, their lives. Dr. Mittal shares his essential checklist for a healthy heart: Move every day. You don’t need to run marathons. A brisk 30-minute walk, dancing, yoga, or swimming can do wonders for your cardiovascular health. However, consult your doctor before making any changes to your health and lifestyle.

Eat fresh. Prioritize fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Cut down on sugar, salt, and processed foods.

Sleep well. Aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation can raise blood pressure and affect metabolism.

Manage stress. “Stress is a silent killer,” says Dr. Mittal. “Make time for yourself — meditate, read, connect with loved ones, or simply breathe correctly.”

Quit smoking. Smoking dramatically increases the risk of heart attack and stroke — and the risk is even higher in women than men.

With nearly 25 per cent of all men in the ages above 50 dealing with some niggling prostate condition it is time to move this walnut-sized gland firmly to the center of the conversation about men’s wellbeing.

For decades, prostate health is often overshadowed by cultural reluctance to talk about the symptoms, sexual health, or worse. But with recent reports warning of a looming global prostate cancer crisis - annual diagnoses predicted to almost double, climbing from 1.4 million in 2020 to 2.9 million by 2040 – let’s be candid about it.

As age advances the prostate problem, can impact over 50 per cent of men above the age of 60 and above and may progress to Prostate cancer if neglected.

Despite advances, we see too many men being diagnosed with prostate cancer at a late stage. “One of the biggest challenges we face is underdiagnosis,” says Professor Dr Rabi Madi, professor of Urology and director of the Robotic surgery center at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

“Men tend to ignore early urinary symptoms or delay routine screening, and by the time they arrive, the disease may already be advanced.”

Treatment of prostate disease Medicines remain the cornerstone of treatment for thousands of men suffering from enlarged prostate gland. Prostatitis can be treated with anti-bacterial drugs, Alpha-blockers and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, while BPH may be treated with medications to relax the smooth muscle of the gland or to shrink the size of the prostate. Surgery is an option to produce a permanently widened channel in the part of the urethra that passes through the prostate.

Every man above 50 must get PSA done annually. In early stages, the cancer cells are confined to the prostate gland. With the more aggressive types of prostate cancer, cancer cells enter the vascular and lymphatic systems early and spread to other parts of the body where they develop secondary tumors, particularly in the bones.

Cool weather feels good on our skin however, skin care specialists and beauticians caution to have a more detailed routine for your skincare dryness in the weather can result in drier, flaky skin and trigger aging.

Besides that, since it is cooler, we often like to spend more time outdoors and longer walks on the beach. the skin, result in rough, dry, skin where we are likely to deal with acne, and sudden appearances of lines and wrinkles. Therefore, extra care is required during the winter months.”

The human skin is the largest organ on our body covering 100 per cent of the body surface and beginning with care for soles of feet and hands, the entire surface of the skin requires cleansing and moisturizing, more so, the skin on one’s face. One needs a special cleansing, toning and moisturizing (CTM) routine.

“We all love soft hands and feet, and more importantly we focus on our facial skin as it tans easily, gets flaky and dry, breaks into acne and pimples and requires special handling to keep the texture and glow intact,” adds Loubna.

Special skincare the winters Loubna advises a special care for hands and feet to be followed everyday and a different CTM routine for the face.

Care for your hands and feet

Soak your hands in a bowl of warm water with salts and feet in bucket full of warm water with Epsom salts in the evening for a duration of 15 minutes. Then pat dry and use a generous dollop of cocoa butter cream to moisturize your limbs every day. Wear mittens while sleeping and use cotton moccasins on your feet while walking around in your home.

Pamper your face First, use oil or an oil-based mild cream to completely take off remnants of the day’s makeup and mascara. Once that is done, next, use a gentle

hydrating cleanser. No harsh or abrasive scrub should be used during the winters as it is likely to strip the face of moisture. Once the face is cleaned, use a mild toner with aloe-vera and rose water.

Gently dab on your face with a soft cotton swab and clear any. A toner is like a primer which smooths the surface. Once toned, apply a good moisturizing cream and massage it deeply into face with clockwise and in upward movement.

Hydrate, hydrate and hydrate While creams and lotions can repair at the surface, you really need to take care of cellular level hydration but having ample water, salads, water-rich fruits and avoiding excessive tea, coffee, soda or alcohol that can play havoc with your skin. These drinks are diuretics that soak up water at a cellular level and result in dryness on the skin surface.

Sunscreen Whenever you step out of home make sure, you have a good SPF 50 sunscreen. The winter sun may not seem as hot as during summers, but the ultra-violet rays result in skin damage that could cause premature aging.

Moisturize Use a good moisturizer before applying make-up in the morning whilst stepping out. Cleaning, toning and moisturizing the skin morning and evening is a ritual you cannot miss to keep skin healthy and free of fine lines.

Nutrition Have a well-balanced meal with antioxidant-rich raw salad, nuts, sprouts, fruits, oily fish rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, protein-rich foods that provide all amino acids for repair and rejuvenation. Have food cooked with minimum oil.

Women who go on strict diets can suffer from vitamin deficiencies that can result in dry skin, pigmentation and fine lines.

Creams Invest in high quality anti-aging creams, ceramides and consult a skin specialist at least once a month.

A Homemade cream for winter skincare While one can invest in some expensive anti-aging night repair creams, you might want to use these sparingly. Loubna recommends creating you own moisturizing face cream for the winters.

“Take three teaspoons of shea butter or cocoa butter as the main moisturizing base. To this you can a teaspoon or 7-8 drops of almond, jojoba, argan and rose-hip seed oil each. If you have two or three of these essential oils, that should suffice. These oils are rich in vitamin E, prevent acne and add essential fatty acids to fight environmental damage.

Blend these ingredients well, then add a large tablespoon or pure aloe-vera gel, a teaspoon of vitamin E oil and a teaspoon of glycerine.

To make this cream more effective, add either a teaspoon of rice powder or soyabean powder. Mix everything well, till it is a homogenous blend.

Store in a cool place and make it a routine to apply this during the night after your CTM routine. This home-made cream will have no chemicals or preservatives and will be a rich moisturizing agent.” H

Revisiting Type 2 Diabetes What we know, what’s changing, and how to stay ahead Walk into any clinic on a weekday morning and you’ll meet people carrying the quiet weight of Type 2 diabetes (T2D): parents stopping off at labs to give their fasting blood samples before heading to work, office workers comparing notes on their HBA1C*, new injectables, those with the condition discussing if remission is possible. The short answer, more is possible today than even five years ago provided we catch risk early, use the right tools, and pair medicine with smart, sustainable habits.

With over 90 per cent of the diabetes scourge being T2D, we know it affects roughly 1 in 9 adults worldwide with numbers continuing to climb especially in low and middle-income countries. Many people remain undiagnosed or untreated, a reason why routine screening and prevention matter as much as ever.

Dr Anil Kumar suggests some steps individuals can take to reduce the risk: Food pattern: Choose minimally processed, fiber-rich foods (vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts), lean proteins, and healthy fats. Quality counts as much as quantity.

Movement: Aim for at least 150 minutes/week of moderate activity plus 2 days of resistance training; sit less, move more. (Bonus: even brisk 10-minute bursts of activity help.)

Sleep & stress: Prioritize 7–9 hours’ sleep; use stress-reduction strategies (breath work, walking meetings, short meditations).

Weight management: Early, supported weight loss of 10–15% can prevent diabetes or induce remission if you already have it. Structured programs and coaching raise success rates.

A common question patient have is whether Type 2 diabetes can go into remission. The simple answer is yes, particularly early after diagnosis and with meaningful, maintained weight loss, point out many experts. Move most days: Schedule walks after meals; add two short strength sessions weekly.

Protect organs early: Don’t wait for symptoms to guard your heart, kidneys, eyes, and feet.

Think “team sport”: Primarycare clinicians, endocrinologists, dietitians, diabetes educators, eye and foot specialists all have distinct roles. Structured education is not a nicety; it’s therapy.

Type 2 diabetes is common, but not inevitable, and certainly not

hopeless. The combination of early detection, evidence-based medications (chosen for you), structured education, sensible nutrition, daily movement, and, where appropriate, diabetes tech can prevent the disease, bring it into remission, or keep complications at bay.

The future may add beta-cell restoration to that toolkit; for now, doing the basics brilliantly is still the most powerful medicine we have.

What is HbA1c?

HbA1c refers to glycated hemoglobin. This is a blood test that measures the average blood sugar level in an individual over the past two to three months. It’s a key test for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes, as glucose from the blood attaches to a protein in red blood cells called hemoglobin. A high HbA1c level of over 6.5% indicates Diabetes Mellitus, high average blood sugar and a greater risk of diabetes-related complications. In non-diabetics the reading is 4.0 to 5.6%. In pre-diabetics it is between 5.6%– 6.4% and diabetes patients may have anything higher than that. The higher the reading, the poorer the blood sugar control. H

Q: For a young woman undergoing chemotherapy for breast, ovarian or cervical cancer, how long before the procedure should she freeze her eggs?

What does it involve?

the menstrual cycle (“randomstart protocol”) — reducing delay.

In the era of modern reproductive medicine, most patients are advised to begin fertility preservation immediately on diagnosis of cancer and before chemotherapy starts.

Usually 1–2 weeks before actual chemotherapy starts. Another noteworthy point to keep in mind is that it can be started at any phase or day of the menstrual cycle which is called random start stimulation.

If chemotherapy cannot be delayed, an oncologist may help coordinate rapid referral so treatment can begin as soon as the retrieval cycle is complete.

Usually, the ovarian stimulation starts from menstrual period day 2 and egg retrieval process usually takes 10–14 days.

Ingredients • Coarse Chickpea (besan) flour 500 gm • Pure cow ghee 250 gm • Date-paste 200 gm • Almonds (chopped) 50 gm • Cashewnuts (chopped) 50gm • Pistachio 30 gm • Cardamom 5 pieces (finely powdered) • Organic Stevia powder (optional) 50 gm • Salt - a pinch •

Method

• In a heavy-bottomed pan, add the ghee.

When warm, add the chickpea powder and roast on a low flame.

• Keep stirring continuously for 20 minutes, making sure the flour does not stick to the bottom of the pan and burn.

• After about 20 minutes the flour will have a aromatic fragrance and will have turned golden brown. Turn off the flame and let it cool for 30 minutes.

• In a mixer-blender jar, place the de-seeded dates and blend to a paste. You can add 1-2 tsp of water to get the right consistency.

• When done, add the chopped almond and cashews and cardamom powder. Mix well with a spatula.

• If you want the laddus to be sweeter, you can add the organic stevia powder which is entirely optional.

• Form the rounded fist-sized lobes and place on a plate. You can decorate with pistachio garnish on top • Let it cool completely when done.

• Store in an air-tight glass jar. It has a shelf life of 7- 10 days without refrigeration

Ingredients • Seedless dates (Mejdool) 400gm • Rolled Oats 100gm • Barley 0.5 gm • Ghee 100 gm • Cardamom - 4 pcs (finely powdered) • Nuts ( finely chopped) • Almonds 50 gm • Walnuts 30 gm • Cashewnuts 50 • Dessicated Coconut 250 gm • Seeds (lightly roasted) • Flaxseeds 150 gm • Sesame seeds (white& black) 200gm • Dry ginger powder - 10 gm • Multi-grain powder 30 gm •

Method

• Dry roast all grains separately. Cool & grind to a fine multigrain powder.

• Dry roast nuts & seeds separately. Chop/crush coarsely.

• Grind dates into a thick paste (no water).

• Heat ghee in a large pan. Add dates paste and sauté till it thickens slightly.

• Add Desiccated coconut, roasted nut mix, seeds, multigrain powder, ginger powder & cardamom.

• Mix well until all combines. Let it cool till warm.

• Shape into laddus by greasing palms. Roll tightly.

• Cool completely and store in airtight steel tins or vacuum packs.

• Storage Tips: • Stays good for up to 6 months if kept in fridge or cool dry place.

• Can be vacuum-sealed and stored at room temp for 1 months.

Ingredients • Almond Flour (fine) 350gm • Whole Wheat Flour 250gm • Rolled Oats (powdered) 100.00gm • Unsalted Butter 250gm • Baking Powder 6gm • Stevia powder 60gm • Vanilla Extract 3gm • Chopped Almonds 30gm

Method • Sieve together the almond flour, whole wheat flour, oat flour, baking powder, and salt to remove lumps and ensure even mixing.

• Cream them together using the paddle attachment or a hand whisk until light, creamy, and fluffy (approx. 3–5 mins at medium speed).

• Knead lightly to form a smooth, pliable dough. Dough should not be sticky • Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients and stevia powder to the creamed butter mixture in 2–3 batches.

• If dough feels too dry or crumbly, add milk (1 tbsp at a time) just enough to bring the dough together.

Divide dough into equal portions (approx.

20–25 g each).

• Place on a Baking tray lined with parchment paper, spaced slightly apart.

• Preheat the oven to 160°C (320°F).

• Bake cookies at 160°C for 15–18 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.

• Remove from oven and let cookies cool on tray for 5 minutes.

• Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

• Preheat oven to 170°C. • Soak chopped dates in warm water for 10–15 mins, then blend into a paste. 3.

• Line a baking tin with butter paper and lightly grease it.

• In a large bowl, sift together whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

• Add chopped walnuts and raisins to the dry mix (dust with flour to prevent sinking).

• In another bowl, beat the eggs until light and fluffy.

• Add sunflower oil, vanilla essence, and the date paste. Mix well.

• Fold in the grated carrots and pineapple.

• Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Mix gently using a spatula until just combined (do not overmix).

• Pour the batter into the prepared tin.

• Bake at 170°C for 35–45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

• Allow to cool for 15 minutes before de-moulding.

• Stays fresh for 3–4 days at room temp or up to a week refrigerated.

The Ceviche Mixto brought even more dimensions with prawns and octopus joining the sea bass ensemble. It’s a vibrant, more textural take on the classic.

‫افتتاحية الرئيس‬ ‫بينما تستعد مجموعة ثومبي لتخطو نحو عامها التاسع‬ ‫والعشرين في دولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة‪ ،‬يبقى الهدف من‬ ‫ً‬ ‫واضًحا وهو خدمة هذا الوطن من خالل التعليم والرعاية‬ ‫مسيرتنا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تماًما مع رؤية اإلمارات‬ ‫الصحية والبحث العلمي‪ ،‬بما يتماشى‬ ‫‪.2028‬‬

‫هذا العام‪ ،‬كان من دواعي الفخر لنا حصولنا على شهادة «أفضل‬ ‫مكان للعمل»‪ ،‬مما يؤكد التزامنا بتطبيق األخالقيات ‪،‬والقيم‪ ،‬وخلق‬ ‫ثقافة الثقة والنمو‪ .‬ومن خالل نافس ‪ ،‬نواصل تمكين وتوظيف‬ ‫المواهب اإلماراتية عبر شبكتنا الممتدة‪.‬‬ ‫أحد اإلنجازات الهامة التى سنخوضها خالل الفترة القادمة هي‬ ‫مدينة ثومبي الطبية في دبي‪ ،‬و هي اآلن في مراحل متقدمة‬ ‫من التخطيط‪ .‬وستجمع هذه الوجهة المميزة بين التعليم الطبي‪،‬‬ ‫والمستشفيات‪ ،‬وإعادة التأهيل‪ ،‬وخدمات طب األسنان‪ ،‬والرعاية‬ ‫البيطرية‪ ،‬والتشخيص الطبي‪ ،‬والصيدلة‪ ،‬والضيافة‪ ،‬والخدمات‬ ‫والمرافق المجتمعية متضمنة ردهة للمطاعم‪ ،.‬و سيتم إطالق هذه‬ ‫الخدمات على مراحل ‪ ،‬حيث سيتم تقديم كل خدمة في مرحلة‪،‬‬ ‫مما سيجعل منها مستقبليًاً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جاهًزا للتعلم والشفاء واالبتكار‪.‬‬ ‫مركًزا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وطالبًة جدد‬ ‫رحبت جامعة الخليج الطبية بـانضمام ‪ 1189‬طال ً​ًبا‬ ‫من ‪ 111‬جنسية مختلفة خالل حفل المعطف األبيض السابع‬ ‫والعشرين‪ ،‬مما يعزز من نظامنا األكاديمي متعدد الثقافات‪.‬‬ ‫وقد أطلقنا مؤخرًاً ستة برامج أكاديمية جديدة على مستويات‬ ‫البكالوريوس والماجستير والدبلوم والدكتوراه‪ ،‬كما حصلنا على‬ ‫الموافقة لتقديم برنامج دكتور في الطب البيطري‪ ،‬الذي‬ ‫سيبدأ تطبيقه قري ً​ًبا‪.‬‬ ‫كذلك قمنا بتوقيع شراكات جديدة لتأمين فرص التدريب‬ ‫والتوظيف لخريجي جامعة الخليج الطبية ‪ ،‬كما نستعد الستقبال‬ ‫طالب دفعة ربيع ‪ ،2026‬التي ستبدأ في فبراير‪ .‬كما سيبدأ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ملهًما‬ ‫برنامج “أطمح أن أصبح طبيبًاً» مجددًاً في ديسمبر‪،‬‬ ‫الطالب والدارسين الشباب لالندماج في مختلف المهن الطبية‪.‬‬ ‫استضافت جامعة الخليج الطبية أكبر معرض للطب والعلوم ‪،‬‬ ‫حيث شارك فيه ‪ 22,000‬طالب سواء بتواجدهم داخل الحرم‬ ‫الجامعي أوعبر اإلنترنت‪ .‬كما افتتحنا مراكز للمحاكاة األكثر‬ ‫تقدمًاً في المنطقة الذي يضم محاكاة في مجاالت الطب‪،‬‬ ‫وطب األسنان‪ ،‬وإعادة التأهيل‪ ،‬والتمريض‪ ،‬وقريبًاً مركز المحاكاة‬ ‫للطب البيطري في دبي ‪ ،‬و تدعم مراكز المحاكاة السريرية‬ ‫واالمتحانات المتقدمة الجديدة هذه أكثر من ‪ 200‬مقعد امتحان‬ ‫رقمي‪.‬‬ ‫و لدعم االبتكار بشكل أكبر‪ ،‬تم تمديد موعد التقديم لمنحة‬ ‫ثومبي الدولية لألبحاث إلى ‪ 15‬ديسمبر ‪ ، 2025‬وتقدر المنحة‬ ‫بقيمة ‪ 3‬ماليين درهم ‪ .‬كما أننا نستعد حاليًاً إلقامة حفل تخرج‬ ‫دفعة جديدة من طالبنا لعام ‪ 2025‬في ‪ 19‬نوفمبر‪.‬‬ ‫هذا العام‪ ،‬عزز قطاع الرعاية الصحية بمجموعة ثومبي التعاون‬ ‫الدولي من خالل إطالق برنامج «مرحبًاً بالجراحين المتخصصين»‬

‫من جميع أنحاء العالم كأطباء زائرين وأعضاء هيئة تدريس‬ ‫مشاركين مع امتيازات خاصة و فرص لتقديمهم في برامج‬ ‫الشهادات المعتمدة والدبلومات‪.‬‬ ‫كما قمنا بتدشين وحدة جراحة الليزك وجراحات العيون‬ ‫المتقدمة في مستشفى ثومبي الجامعي‪.‬‬ ‫وتحت مبادرة الصحة الواحدة أطلقنا عيادتنا البيطرية في‬ ‫الشارقة التي أصبحت اآلن وجهة موثوقة للرعاية المتقدمة‬ ‫للحيوانات األليفة ‪ ،‬حيث يتم التعامل وبنجاح مع الحاالت‬ ‫الطبية السريرية المعقدة‪.‬‬ ‫كما توسعت شبكة إعادة التأهيل لدينا بثالث خدمات رائدة‬ ‫هي العالج باألكسجين عالي الضغط (‪ ،)HBOT‬العالج‬ ‫بالتحفيز المغناطيسي عبر الجمجمة (‪ ،)TMS‬ومركبة نقل‬ ‫تدعم الكراسي المتحركة‪.‬‬ ‫كما تم اإلعالن مؤخرًاً عن المؤتمر الدولي للعالج التجميلي‬ ‫والجراحة التجميلية ‪ ،‬والمقرر إقامته في ‪ 16‬نوفمبر ‪.2025‬‬ ‫تشمل إنجازاتنا أيضًاً البدء في تقديم خدمات غسيل الكلوي‬ ‫في مستشفى ثومبي لرعاية اليوم الواحد بالشارقة ‪،‬‬ ‫وافتتاح عيادة األلم في مستشفى ثومبي الفجيرة‪ ،‬وتقديم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وتطبيًقا‬ ‫مختبرات ثومبي لباقات فحص تشخيصية جديدة‬ ‫هاتف ً​ًيا لراحة المرضى والتسهيل عليهم‪.‬‬ ‫كما قامت زو اند مو للبصريات بتوسيع شراكاتها مع شركات‬ ‫التأمين بإضافة مزودين جديدين للتأمين‪ ،‬إلى جانب عروض‬ ‫جديدة للعناية بالعيون‪.‬‬ ‫أما قسم الضيافة فقد نظم مخيم صيفي نابض بالحياة لـ ‪1000‬‬ ‫طفل واعلن عن باقات للصحة والعافية لحوالي ‪ 384‬عائلة‪.‬‬ ‫استضافت ردهة مطاعم ثومبي احتفاليات األونام حيث‬ ‫جذبت آالف الزوار وقدم من خاللها خيارات متنوعة من الهدايا‬ ‫و الحلويات االحتفالية بمناسبة ديوالي‪.‬‬ ‫وبكل فخر تشرفنا بحضور معالي الشيخ نهيان مبارك آل نهيان‬ ‫لحفل توزيع جوائز الصحة السنوي‪ ،‬حيث تم تكريم ‪ 78‬من‬ ‫المتخصصين في الرعاية الصحية تقديرًاً لخدماتهم المتميزة‬ ‫في هذا المجال‪.‬‬ ‫يواصل القسم اإلعالمي لدينا تعزيز النجاح والثقافة‬ ‫اإلقليميين‪ ،‬حيث يقوم حاليًاً بنشر إصدارين جديدين‪،‬وهما‬ ‫مجلة الخليج للتعليم‪ ،‬مجلة الخليج للحياة‪.‬‬ ‫بينما نتطلع إلى المستقبل‪ ،‬نواصل التزامنا بالمساهمة في‬ ‫قصة نمو دولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة — من خالل رعاية‬ ‫المواهب‪ ،‬وتطوير الرعاية الصحية‪ ،‬وتمكين المجتمعات‪.‬‬ ‫نتمنى لجميع مواطني ومقيمي دولة اإلمارات العربية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫المتحدة ً‬ ‫سعيًدا وصح ً​ًيا ‪ 2025‬وسنة جديدة‬ ‫عيًدا وطن ً​ًيا‬ ‫مزدهرة ‪.2026‬‬
