The quality of the tourism that has always characterised Sotogrande and its surrounding area has been demonstrated once again this Easter with the presence in the area of many residents and visitors. Leisure, sports and culinary options are once again some of the great qualities that ensure that, year after year, and despite the current economic crisis, Sotogrande keeps hanging up its ‘no vacancies’ during this period, which marks the beginning of the high season for

tourism that will continue until the end of the summer. With this influx of visitors, tourism is once again the main economic driving force in the area. Activities like polo, golf, padel and sailing will once again become Sotogrande’s best qualities during this holiday period. Added to these there will be the usual leisure activities in the area, like the customary Sotogrande street market and the opening of the beach clubs.

The beginning of a season of big news

T

he beginning of Holy Week is also the beginning of the tourist season, because due to the late dates on which Easter falls this year, there will hardly be a break in the industry until summer, which is great news for local businesspeople. To continue with the good levels of hotel occupancy in the area, where the ‘no vacancies’ sign will be hung up on the key days of the Easter holiday, in May a top sports event will take place just a few kilometres away: the Volvo World Match Play at Finca Cortesín. The best players in the world have already confirmed their presence and the owners of this magnificent golfing paradise have made improvements to the course that will undoubtedly be popular among the fans that will flock to enjoy the entertainment in person. Just as the champion of this event lifts the cup, thousands of citizens will be voting in the municipal elections. In San Roque all the parties have presented their candidate lists and now they are immersed in a very active pre-campaign from an informative point of view, so via our media we are working hard to keep readers up to date with everything that has happened. To this end at www.sotograndedigital.com we have created a special section where we will reveal the highlights of everything that happens leading up to May 22. We are aware that at this time of year many visitors come to enjoy a few well-deserved days of rest in Sotogrande, so El Periódico de Sotogrande proposes some options for sport and leisure over the holiday period, including polo, golf and shopping, to name just a few.

Juzguen ustedes y luego voten.

Letter to readers

The Week of Passion or the month of political anguish?

W

e are enjoying a busy and varied week, marked by the festival that we are celebrating, the quintessential Holy Week, in which thousands of cofrades, as the members of the religious brotherhoods are known, go out onto the streets in Spain with their processionary floats, expressing their huge dedication to this important event, which far from the misgivings that some might have, is still something that we have been exalting on our streets for hundreds of years. Of course, religious fervour aside, many people take advantage of this holiday period simply to take a break and enjoy a well-deserved rest with the family. And it all contributes to strengthening the only industry that we have something to say about: tourism. The industry differentiates itself by providing an array of different ways in which to enjoy the area aside from the beach, which on this occasion will have try and shrug off an unappeasable winter which refuses to leave us alone and can make things very difficult, but fortunately there are many other options: sport, a lot of sport, golf, polo, hiking, cycling, regattas and other activities that Sotogrande supplies in generous quantities. And there is the superb cuisine, with local restaurateurs, who have endured a long hard winter, jumping into action to get their premises in perfect shape and, most importantly, focus on the food, with menus adapted to the season while increasing quality with local produce. It will be a great opportunity to sample the culinary excellence of our area, so savour and enjoy our delicious dishes. And a sweet or a bitter dish, depending on how it goes in the next elections, will be tasted by our local politicians. Yes, dear readers and friends, it is time for

us citizens to serve up an exquisite platter with the thing the political forces covet most: our votes. We only have to do it every four years, but the ritual of seasoning and preparing something they crave so much should make us think and reflect. When the various political powers present their candidate lists for the council elections they carry a calculator in their pockets, tallying up the votes they need to know whether they could win eight, seven, two or who knows how many seats. Because then it’s time for the best part: the pacts made to get their hands on the ceremonial staff. But you will soon see how the squabbles and bandying of accusations between the politicians do little to help their cause in their bid to occupy the governor’s chair. And then there’s the cute phrases so full of marketing messages: “In your mayor you can trust”, “Answers for San Roque”, “All behind the Guadiaro Valley”, “Autonomy for the local authorities”, “Because you are San Roque”, “We’re different, are you?”. How pretty they all are. If they actually held true it would be wonderful for everyone, but they are only there to bring in the votes and then time goes by and nothing is done, or taxes go up, or they charge us more for water and waste collection, and who knows what else they might do to us now that they have lost their fees from municipal building permits due to the property crisis. We wish them all luck, but one thing we do ask them is for our taxes to be reflected in the municipality on the scale in which we pay them. Just one example: the San Enrique Health Centre was a reality in the other elections, four years later we are left with a half-finished building. Where is the budget allocation for this project? You judge, and then vote.

Sotogrande International School to offer scholarships for San Roque students and sportspeople Sotogrande International School and the municipal council have reached an agreement in which five scholarships will be offered to outstanding San Roque students with limited financial resources, in addition to another ten scholarships for young sportspeople from the municipality. In return, the council will facilitate the school’s expansion of its educational facilities within the current legal framework. Palma explained that this agreement will help to improve the already excellent institutional relationship between the school and the municipal council, and he underlined that “it will be very important for those San Roque families whose children excel in their studies but do

not have the financial means, because they will be able to access these scholarships in order to be educated here”. Paul Templeton, the chairman of the Sotogrande International School board, stressed that the agreement is ideal for “this time of economic crisis, because it will contribute to improving the situation. By awarding these scholarships, I’m sure we will take another step towards a better future”. By virtue of the agreement, Sotogrande International School will make five academic scholarships available to San Roque Municipal Council which will be awarded to future students of the school on the basis of the rules agreed between the

two parties, giving precedence to candidates with limited financial resources and with high academic grades. Likewise, bearing in mind the sports clubs and activities already underway and those envisaged for the near future by the school, ten sports scholarships will also be made available to the municipal council for San Roque youngsters who excel in any of the sports played at the school. In addition, the two parties will prepare a plan for using sports facilities, as well as the assembly hall and other facilities that the school possesses, without detriment to the educational programme and school activities.

Asesoría legal

Luis Babiano Abogados / Lawyers Sotogrande E-mail: luisbabiano@babiano.net

M

I

We have seen cases in which even the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court has exonerated members of the Guardia Civil who had failed to tell the truth within disciplinary action taken against them. One of the rulings we have had the opportunity to read, states as follows: “That in the very likely supposition that a Guardia Civil would end up subject to disciplinary action when he was cross examined in the course of an internal inquiry in which the group of questions asked were aimed at obtaining answers that might incriminate him, the accused or potentially accused military officer has the right not to pronounce against himself or declare his guilt, because in this supposition a condition is added to that of military officer: that of current or future defendant, in which case the information requested from the examined is no longer a matter of the service, but details for which he can be incriminated, so the Court declares that the appellant had the right not to pronounce against himself and not to declare his guilt; the proximate cause of this right is found in the Constitution, which, in this confrontation with the military duty of not hiding anything which underlies the approach of the military prosecutor (understanding that appellant had the right just to remain silent, not to lie) must be maintained without restriction, with all its content, that is, with the possibility of keeping quiet or even lying”. Maybe the attitude adopted by some of the accused in the most famous criminal trials at the moment, such as the murder of Marta del Castillo, are now more readily understood. In this case the accused are brazenly lying to take advantage of the legal protection provided by the Constitution. And however much it hurts and however much we rummage around in the legal precedents, it is not humanly possible, with the current legislation, to force anyone to declare and to say for example, where Marta’s body is. In this specific case, moreover, the fact that the body has not been found also favours her murderers because some of the crimes they are accused of have not yet been proven and they would only be proven by the body’s appearance and a forensic analysis of it. Although right now it is not possible to force anyone to tell the truth, indirect ways to make them liable for the lies they tell to shirk their responsibility could be assessed. In Marta’s case, they could be charged compensation for the cost incurred by the police in their search for the body following the false trails given by the accused. In any event it is a clear case of the boundaries of the law.

El derecho a mentir del imputado

n my social circle I often find that people are surprised when I tell them that any defendant has the right to lie and not just to plead innocent. The general public are surprised that the law protects a defendant’s right to lie in any trial whether it be criminal, administrative or of any other nature, if it might be detrimental to the deponent. Historically, Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights recognised the right both not to be forced to pronounce against oneself and not to admit one’s guilt. And these rights were implicitly envisaged in the old Law of Criminal Proceedings, which established that the cross examination of the person on trail should be exempted from the oath. With this dispensation in the oath, the legal consequences that could fall on deponents due to falsity or lies in their statements were avoided. However, this implicit entitlement to lie became explicit when the Spanish Constitution was published and the right not to pronounce against oneself or confess one’s guilt was established in Section 2 of Article 24. This principle is also reaffirmed in Section Three of Article 17 of the Constitution when it states that nobody can be forced to pronounce. The result of all of this legislation is that people who are subjected to a procedure that might bring them some kind detriment have the right not only not to declare their guilt and presume their innocence but also to lie. This is why we often read in the newspapers that a judge has cited someone as a defendant rather than a witness to give them greater procedural protection. Witnesses are obliged to tell the truth and if they do not there will be detrimental consequences for them. But if witnesses appear as defendants and fail to tell the truth, they are not liable in any way for lying. On some occasions we have seen how a person initially cited as a witness in a criminal procedure, and who as such is obliged to tell the truth, later goes on to become a defendant in the same trial. This situation can lead to the annulment of the actions taken against the person in question and in no event may the statements made as a witness be detrimental to the defendant.

Sotogrande to have complete play park in May Grupo Almazara has continued to make preparations for the future play park that is being built at Hípica de Sotogrande and which, as its promoter, Carlos Sánchez Moyano, has confirmed, will open in May. In view of the forthcoming opening of this great play facility, Sotogrande Hípica Park wanted to reveal some of its details to El Periódico de Sotogrande, to show that the project is in line with the needs and standards of an area like this resort, combining recreation for both children and parents. The size of the future park is one of its main attributes: “It will have 600 square metres indoors and a total of 4,500 outdoors”, said Sánchez Moyano. With this large space available

for developing the project, the park aims to become a leading facility in the whole comarca where families can spend the day with their children, with activities and games for kids aged 2 to 16. A play centre, theatre, puppets, farm school, creativity and audiovisual room, 5-a-side football pitch on grass and a gigantic castle are just some of the activities especially for the children. Although the park aims to become the ideal place for a family day out, it will also have a picnic area, terrace, café, Wi-Fi zone etc. On weekends special activities will be held for the kids, while youngsters will be able to enjoy the best music with their friends at the Disco Club Joven, which will open every weekend and on days prece-

ding public holidays. Of course, “all the activities will be supervised by highly qualified and bilingual staff, so parents can rest assured that their children are in the best hands”, Sánchez Moyano stresses. Naturally, Sotogrande Hípica Park is also the ideal place for all kinds of celebrations, birthdays, communions, baptisms etc. Given that the project is a private initiative, entry to the park will come at a very reasonable price, with the opportunity to take out seasonal, monthly or annual membership, or to pay for a full day, half day or by the hour, and there will be special prices for families, large families, groups and/or schools.

Humanline celebrates successful first year in Sotogrande The Humanline medical centres in Sotogrande are celebrating their first year in existence with some important agreements that have enabled them to become leading clinics in the medical sector in just twelve months. This polyclinic with 35 specialities has always aimed to offer a new concept in medicine. Over there have been some clear examples of this, not just by offering a personalised and high-quality service to each patient but also by increasing the number of services and features with the aim of facilitating healthcare in the area. A good example of this was the opening of the radiology clinic, located on the ground floor of the Sotomarket Shopping Centre. Thanks to this clinic, Humanline now has a specialised centre equipped with the most advanced technology, including a state-of-the-art mul-

tislice CT scanner with all its densitometry, pulmonary nodule detection, cardiological analysis, vascular functions etc. The centre also has ultrasound, cardiac ultrasound, mammography, orthopantomography and conventional radiology (x-ray). In addition, Humanline recently started to offer 25-hour medical attention, an important step in meeting the needs of the populations. The launch of the service follows Humanline’s agreement with the Malaga-based firm Flying Doctors, who in coordination with USP Marbella have provided the medical centre with a mobile ICU to meet the needs of the public outside of Humanline’s normal opening hours. Although Humanline maintains its opening hours of 9 am to 9 pm, Monday to Saturday, with this new service, if

there is an emergency, patients calling the centre outside of the established times will be able to receive treatment at home or at the Humanline premises in Sotogrande, or otherwise taken to the USP Marbella hospital. Thanks to the equipment that this company has, the patient can be attended to at home, because Flying Doctors have everything needed to diagnose patients and, in more serious cases, transport them to a medical centre while taking every precaution. Finally, the centre has now announced an agreement with Caser Salud, whose policyholders can now use all the Humanline services. With this great news of an agreement with such an important insurance company, Humanline has taken another step forward to offer high-quality healthcare and to make things easier for its patients.

Martín Gutiérrez

The Humanline medical centres are celebrating their first year Reyes Sabater Statements “From the beginning this project was a personal challenge for many of us who started out in it and it fills us with satisfaction to see how, a year later, it continues to grow and exceed our best expectations. Our intention was to fill the gap in healthcare provision in Sotogrande and nearby areas. We are delighted with how well we have been received from the outset and we know that our patients and local residents are happy with our work because our centres are a place where they can receive treatment from the best professionals in a welcoming, cosy and friendly environment, as well as obtain immediate attention in the event of unexpected emergencies with the most complete and technologically advanced equipment, both here and at home. Over the months we have earned the loyalty of many patients and we have become the go-to medical centre for whole families; we hope to continue along these lines over the next few years”.

The area will be at full capacity over the busiest days of Easter

Sotogrande offers plenty of activities for the beginning of the tourist season Once again, Sotogrande is the favourite destination of hundreds of tourists over the Easter holidays. Its manager, Francisco Cuenca, has explained that, due to the recent winter storms, the task of preparing the club to open has been very difficult, but that although there are lawn areas that are not in optimum condition, the decision was made to offer visitors this option because the club is an important part of the resort and one of the busiest places at this time of year. In addition to its fantastic pools with a lifeguard service, visitors can enjoy the a la carte restaurant, and for the kids the club has entertainment, a bouncy castle and a refurbished activity room. Another leisure option for

visitors is the customary Sotogrande street market, which is celebrating its first anniversary since its move to Ribera del Marlin. To enable visitors to go shopping without leaving the resort, in addition to the usual Sunday market it will also be held on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. In addition to the days of sport, at the end of the Memorial Doña María de las Mercedes polo fans will be able to enjoy a festive cocktail party organised by the foundation itself and the Andalusian Business Confederation. And of course, the restaurants, bars and other eateries will also benefit from the good figures that are predicted for Easter and which are expected to continue until the summer.

What are your predictions and news at the beginning of the tourist season? With the arrival of Holy Week, the tourist season in Sotogrande gets underway, which is why El Periódico de Sotogrande decided to speak to the people behind the various sports clubs and Sotogrande businesses to hear about any news they might have. They are all ready to enter the rest of the year with plenty of energy, with pretty full schedules to make residents’ and visitors’ free time more interesting. Some, like the Cucurucho Beach Club, have just opened having worked hard to ensure everything is in place to offer their excellent service. Others, like Santa María Polo Club, have embarked on their spring season, which acts as a unique prelude to the forthcoming high season. As for golf clubs like Almenara, the social tournaments that are always so popular among enthusiasts of this sport are now more frequent. And as far as sailing is concerned, the Royal Sailing Club of Sotogrande has some important news this year, with the Copa Sotogrande once again taking the limelight but without forgetting the club’s expansion project and the efforts that the club will make to launch a new monotype fleet.

REYES MACÍAS, SOTOGRANDE S.A.

“We have important projects for the summer” “Sotogrande S.A . is working hard to reach important agreements with which to ensure there will be more activities this summer. All of them will

be announced in good time, but I can reveal that both children and parents have been taken into account in organising the schedule, because Soto-

grande always bears families in mind. We are also working to strengthen the shopping area throughout the summer”.

“We open from Holy Week until October” FRANCISCO CUENCA CLUB DE PLAYA CUCURUCHO

“ We opened this Holy Week for members and visitors, although it has been hard work because of the adverse weather that we have had this winter, which is why there are areas

that are not in perfect condition, like some parts of the lawn, but even so we opted to open in order to meet the needs of our customers. The restaurant will be open a la carte

and there will be entertainment every day for the kids, and they will also be able to enjoy an activities room that has been fully refurbished. We will remain open until October”.

“We’ve seen an improvement compared to last year”

“The season begins with a large number of tournaments, from Holy Week until the end of August. In April there’s the Halcón Viajes and Elitetronic, in May the Canal Plus tour visits us, in June we have Spanish Golf Federation competitions and several

corporate tournaments. In July and August we have a very attractive schedule and as always Sotogrande will get involved in our events. Residents in the resort love the big events we organise, the fantastic condition of the course and the catering service

we offer. More tournaments have been organised to date than last year. The course is in fabulous condition and the Sotogrande Golf Academy is receiving more and more children at our school. We have seen an improvement compared to last year”.

“Our schedule is similar to last year” ALFONSO PARIAS RCMS

“Our schedule of activities is similar to last year, with our star regatta which will be the Copa de Sotogrande, for which we are negotiating sponsorship from BMW and other sponsors. I

think it’s pretty well organised bearing in mind the situation we are in and the time we have left. At the club we also have some important news in two areas: the launch of a monotype

fleet from May so that members can compete in the same class, and also we are making a great deal of progress in expanding the club thanks to the agreement with Sotogrande”.

“The forecasts are superb” “Santa María Polo Club's spring season has started very positively. We have a very high standard with the three customary spring tournaments and we have planned a closing activity with a cocktail party orga-

nised by the Andalusian Business Confederation (CEA) and the Doña María de las Mercedes Foundation. For the summer the forecasts are even better because we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the

Summer Tournament, so in sporting terms there will be a very high standard with important teams, and all of this will be complemented with intense after-polo social activity”.

Alex Medina joins John Medina team Alex Medina has started a new phase in his professional life. After completing his contract as general manager of the Urban Conservation Entity (EUC), Alex Medina now has some new projects underway in the property and complementary services market in Sotogrande. El Periódico de Sotogrande interviewed him so he could tell us why he has joined forces with his brother John Medina.

do turístico y residencial.

What is your background in the area and your professional background? I arrived in the area in 1991, appointed as the general manager of San Roque Club when the hotel and golf course were opened. After the Ryder Cup in 1997 I was hired as chief executive of the World Golf Championships of 1999 and 2000 at Valderrama. I was also director of the World Golf Cup in Seville and the World Golf Cup at Vilamoura in the Algarve, plus I had roles in the PGA organising European Tour championships and the Ryder Cup in the United States, England and Ireland. In 2007 I became general manager of Sotogrande’s Urban Conservation Entity, where I remained until February 2011. In all this time I have lived in Sotogrande, so I have been here for 20 years and I have a great many contacts in the tourist and residential industry. What would you highlight about your time with the EUC? My work was essentially to coordinate the resort’s services following the boom years in which we experienced a big increase in the number of homes, particularly in Sotogrande’s high area. All the empty plots became private homes and the Sotogrande population grew, creating many new owners’ associations within the resort. The Entity is in very good hands with Sergio Sánchez and his excellent team of professionals, who are well trained and have many years experience in dealing with all the issues that concern pro-

perty owners. How has Sotogrande evolved? Sotogrande has grown a lot over the years. Since my arrival in 1991, which was the previous period of economic crisis we went through, the market gradually recovered towards the end of the 90s, coinciding with the Ryder Cup, improvements in infrastructures and the incorporation of the euro. Sotogrande was growing fast. The International School moved to La Reserva with over 600 students. The whole harbour area and the golf courses like Almenara (with the hotel) and La Reserva became a reality, and the dual carriageway also helped a great deal because it meant we had three airports within an hour’s drive. The San Roque Club and Alcaidesa resorts also contributed to this growth with their hotels and golf courses. What are you future projects? Now I am joining the John Medina team, introducing new segments of the property market and its complementary services, because with John, Amelia Cuenca and Martina Jurado, John Medina SL is well known and well established as a leader in sales and lettings. I don’t think John Medina needs any introduction because he is well known in the area. For those who don’t know him personally, John has been working in the Sotogrande property market for over 30 years, from his time as general sales manager of Fincasol, the co-owner of Merweval, and now as John Medina SL. I’m certain that his experience and what I can contribute will be very useful to our existing and future customers. Do you think it’s a good moment to get involved in this market? I admit it’s not the best moment to get involved in the property market, but it’s a time when the seeds must be sown so that when better times arrive we are in an optimum position. We both hope, due to our experience in the area, that the market will recover in the short term.

The area comprises around 350 acres of land protected

POT envisages recovery for public use of Guadalquitón and Borondo El Periódico de Sotogrande has continued to probe the Campo de Gibraltar Land Management Plan (POT) and will now explain the technical characteristics of the five areas of opportunity that the plan envisages for San Roque, making it the municipality with the highest number of these areas in the comarca. On this occasion, we focus on the project which aims to make Borondo-Guadalquitón a place for public use with highquality hotel establishments. The area comprises around 350 acres of land protected from development in the municipality of San Roque. The ecosystems made up of the coastal cork oak groves of Guadalquitón (to the north) and Diente Borondo (to the west and southeast), combined with the sand dune formations and the scenic conditions of the final section of the Guadalquitón River and its contact with the sea via an enormous area of sandy beaches, mean this space has enormous potential as a tourist attraction. At the mouth of the Guadalquitón and Borondo Rivers there is the Borondo archaeological site. This section of beach of around 3 km is currently inaccessible for public use. The introduction of deve-

lopments must be done following stringent requirements and integrating with the existing environmental, cultural and scenic attributes. The project is justified on the basis that it is a unique space, both due to its intermediate position between two areas of great interest to tourism (Sotogrande and La Alcaidesa) and due to the exceptional conservation of the Guadalquitón cork oak grove.

The project is justified on the basis that it is a unique space The proposal for this Area of Opportunity is justified by the desirability of making use of this space for tourism, enabling the conservation of its natural attributes and preserving the land for public access to nature and the coastal landscape. Nearby there are tourist destinations with high-quality facilities and international prestige, so the aim is for the area to

maintain and strengthen the high end of the European tourism market. The Area of Opportunity will be used for tourism, sport, leisure and trade associated with tourism and the residential sector. In the planning for its uses the following two zones are distinguished, with different planning criteria: The area between the River Guadalquitón and the resort of Sotogrande only permits fivestar hotels, with a maximum of 700 beds for the whole zone. The area located between the River Guadalquitón and the La Alcaidesa resort must adopt compact and concentrated forms of construction and take into account integration with the public space of the Metropolitan Park of Guadalquitón. A minimum of 600 beds in tourism establishments is set for this area, combining the principles of exclusive use and “unity of exploitation”. A minimum of 30,000 mÇ of floor space must be created in buildings suitable for supporting sports and recreational activities, as well as commercial activities related to tourism. Residential buildings will be planned as compact constructions, with organisational urban development approaches

San Roque has five areas of opportunity that the plan envisages

based on the hypothesis of a maximum level of occupancy throughout the year. The hotel establishments must be positioned so that they benefit from views of the coast and sea. The Borondo, Guadalquitón and Los Dientes rivers will become part of the network of open spaces, paying special attention to preserving their riverfronts and banks. Any areas with tree formations with environmental value will be excluded, in particular the cork oak groves. When 70 % of the surface

of the Area of Opportunity has all the components envisaged in the corresponding project developed and 60 % of its hotel accommodation capacity is operational, expansion may be considered. This action is linked to obtaining the Borondo Metropolitan Park and Guadalquitón cork oak grove land, currently classified as undeveloped building land (Sector 01-GL). The execution of this decision may take place gradually and in line with the development of the Area of Opportunity.

Residents of Mar y Sol Shopping Centre area complain of disrepair A group of residents of the Mar y Sol Shopping Centre area have complained to El Periódico de Sotogrande about the “regrettable” state of what they describe as “the heart of Sotogrande”. The residents, wondering who is responsible for maintenance in the area, wanted to show some photographs of the most noticeable imperfections, stating that they do not understand how such neglect could be allowed in the place where the Urban Conservation Entity is located. Litter, billboards in illegal places, signs advertising businesses that no longer exist and damage to the building are some of the complaints from these residents, who say they are powerless because they are a small community. In addition to the neglected appearance of the area due to the

litter that can be seen from the entrance to the shopping centre, residents say that the damage to the building is a hazard for passers-by: “there are stairs in a very bad state, lamps are missing and their cables are exposed, there are rusty fences and there’s litter everywhere”. Another aspect they criticise is the lack of maintenance of the trees in the area, where in recent years some of the ones that were on the service road have been cut down and, a little further up, on the way to La Reserva, which is the road that many residents use for walks, access has been blocked and it is almost impassable. The residents explain that they do not wish to be a nuisance to anyone with these criticisms, they simply want the shortfalls in the area to be resolved once and for all, because after all it is still part of Sotogrande.

The Andalucista Party (PA) in the Mancomunidad (or Association) of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar has lodged an administrative appeal with the Andalusian High Court of Justice (TSJA) against the final agreement approving the modifications

to the Fiscal Bylaw on Rates for the provision by the Mancomunidad of the Solid Urban Waste Collection Service, domestic water supply, sanitation, waste water treatment and waste processing. The Andalucista candidate for mayor of San Roque, Ma-

nuel Melero, complained that “when we went to the Mancomunidad plenary meeting, they had already reached a political agreement to save the skin of the mayor of La Línea, who no longer knew what to do with his rubbish trucks”, and that this

agreement “had been sold behind the people’s backs”. He also pointed out that the rise in rates agreed by the PP and PSOE parties “is particularly flagrant in a time of crisis, reaching 146 percent of what could have been agreed, because we are not oppo-

sed to a unification of criteria”. By virtue of lodging this appeal, the Andalucista Party asks the Mancomunidad to provisionally freeze these rate increases at least until the TSJA has ruled on the allegations made by the PA.

Asesoramiento financiero de Inversis Banco

Inversis Banco Carlos García Quiros Director CFTe E-mail: carlos.garcia@inversis.com

What is financial consultancy? Financial consultancy should be understood as the personalised provision of recommendations for a client: buy, sell, keep, redeem, underwrite, repay, insure... whether it be at the request of this client or on the initiative of the investment company, with regard to one or more operations related to financial instruments. In addition, advice to companies on their capital structure, strategy and mergers and acquisitions is also permitted. It is important to remember that the recommendations must be personal, that is, recommendations made to a specific person in their capacity as investor or potential investor, and not generically. This is why the investment advice must be appro-

priate for the client, bearing in mind personal, proprietary and professional circumstances. The fact that the advice is personal and individual differentiates it from financial analysis, which is an auxiliary service that investment service companies can offer, the function of which is to produce investment reports with general recommendations relating to financial instruments or listed companies. Although these analyses must be governed by requisites of objectivity and impartiality, they are not as exacting as the rules of conduct and loyalty that those who provide financial advice must abide by. This new figure provides clients with a number of advanta-

ges that must be understood and valued: - An open architecture in financial advice, solely and exclusively safeguarding the interests of the client. This means the financial adviser is obliged to carry out a number of tests that show whether the products being recommended is appropriate or not. - Transparency and authorisation. The client is aware of what fees the financial adviser receives. Although it would be ideal if financial advisers only received payment from the client, the law also allows them to receive retrocessions (incentives received from third parties). This transparency is supervised by the CNMV. It is important

to remember that financial advisers must be regulated and they must produce periodic supervisory reports. WHO CAN PROVIDE FINANCIAL ADVICE? As per Law 47/2007 of 19 December, which transposes the MiFID to Spanish legislation, in the Spanish market there are several figures who can carry out this work: - Securities brokers (operating on their own or another’s behalf) - Securities dealers (operating on behalf of others) - Portfolio management companies - Financial consultancy firms,

known by the initials EAFI in Spain. - Credit entities. Although they are not investment service companies, they can offer these services as long as their legal framework, statutes and specific authorisation enables them to do so. From the entry into force of this legislation, any person or entity carrying out these functions in Spain without being registered with the CNMV or regulated as a credit entity by the Bank of Spain must immediately stop this activity. Otherwise, it will be penalised with restrictive fines of up to 500,000 euros which can be repeated in the event of subsequent requirements.

San Roque relives its Holy Week San Roque is once again immersed in one of its most intense festivals: Holy Week. The arrival of thousands of visitors is a clear reflection of the popularity of San Roque’s Easter week among the faithful within Campo de Gibraltar and further afield. During the week some of Andalusia’s most beautiful religious images will be paraded, some of which predate the creation of the municipality. Several of the images carried by the bearers were taken from Gibraltar by the founders of San Roque when the Rock was captured by the British in 1704. Following Palm Sunday with the blessing of the palms and olive trees, Holy Monday

will see the procession of the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús en la Oración del Huerto y María Santísima del Mayor Dolor. On Holy Tuesday the Brotherhood of Santísimo Cristo de la Humildad y Paciencia y Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza will parade their image in the parish. On Holy Wednesday two processions will be held. The first will be the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Cautivo y Rescatado “Medinaceli” y Nuestra Señora de la Merced, who will start at the Chapel of Santísima Trinidad and end at the parish church. The second procession will start at the Chapel of Visitación, borne on the

shoulders of the Brotherhood of Penitencia de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias (the Youth Brotherhood). Maundy Thursday is the day of the Last Supper. The image of María Santísima de los Dolores will depart from the Chapel of Visitación and end in Plaza de Andalucía. The image of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth will then leave the same chapel. An hour later the Holy Gathering will take place on Plaza de Andalucía. Next, the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno y María Santísima de los Dolores will then continue their procession towards the parish church. After midnight the image of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad will depart from the Parish

Church and parade through the streets of the old quarter before returning to the church. The Great Procession of the Holy Sepulchre will begin on Good Friday at 5 pm. That day, the Troop of Romans and the Brotherhoods of Oración del Huerto, Jesús Cautivo, Cristo de la Humildad, Jesús Nazareno, Cristo de las Aguas (de la Vera Cruz), Cristo de la Buena Muerte, Cofradía de la Juventud and Santo Entierro will depart from Plaza de la Iglesia. This is without doubt the crowning point of Holy Week in San Roque, with thousands of local residents actively taking part, while the rest of the public and many visitors enjoy this exhibition of faith and the artistic beauty of the images, which have Andalusian National Tourist Attraction status.

Images of the unresolved issues

A review of the broken promises of four years The Guadiaro Valley is a good example of unfinished business from past election campaigns, or promises that over the last four years have never gone further than paperwork and have never been implemented or completed. El Periódico de Sotogrande, in response to the complaints from local residents, decided to go over the promises broken by the political parties in the municipal council which, one way or another, have been represented in the municipal governing body over the last four years. Through a tour of the various population centres of the Guadiaro Valley, we will show you images of the unresolved issues that will be passed on to the next municipal government from May 23. Without doubt the most notorious case is the San Enrique Health Centre, a project that has been on hold for over two years and which remains unresolved. But there are other outstanding issues with the Guadiaro Valley, ranging from new sports faci-

lities for San Enrique to completing Torreguadiaro’s seafront promenade. In addition to these, there is the request from residents to improve the Guadiaro showground and the construction of a public car park in Torreguadiaro on the site of the former Guardia Civil barracks, which was promised years ago but remains in the same situation. Another matter still unresolved is the dispute over Plot TG22, an issue that will drag on into the next term of office. In Sotogrande, and although the jurisdiction falls to the coastal authorities, a solution is needed to the problems with mouth of the River Guadiaro, which frequently becomes blocked at the water’s exit into the sea, an environmental issue that concerns the area. In addition, residents complain about the lack of security in the area, and although there is a local police squad in Guadiaro, the number of officers allocated to it is considered insufficient.

Do you think the municipal council has done its job this term of office in the Guadiaro Valley?

Muchos son los que consideran que se discrimina a la zona del Valle del Guadiaro, porque aunque se hagan algunas cosas, no se hace tanto como en San Roquecasco, alWith the municipal elections just round the corner, El Periódico de Sotogrande decided to ask residents of the Guadiaro Valley area about the work that the politicians have done over the past four years. In this sounding out of public opinion on the streets, the result was pretty damning for San Roque’s politicians, because the general view is that nothing has been done in the area and that, far from improvement over the past four years, the situation has either stagnated or got worse. There are many who believe that the Guadiaro Valley area is discriminated against because, although some things are done, it is not as much as in San Roque town, and of course lo-

“The area needs to be nurtured”

cal residents are unhappy about this. Aspects like cleaning, public safety and promoting activities for young people are some of

the shortfalls that residents believe should be improved in various parts of the Guadiaro Valley.

“I think it has been neglected a bit; I’ve lived in other regions and I’ve seen quite a lot more development. Right now in this area there’s nothing going on in the streets because there’s nothing to do. I don’t think it’s a general thing in San Roque: in the town centre the situation is completely different, as it is in other nearby towns like Sabinillas or Estepona. For instance, in Torreguadiaro nothing is done to develop the beach, its seafront promenade or summer activities. Elsewhere, like in Guadiaro, there are no activities for young people, nor places in which to stroll, because there isn’t even a town square. The area needs to be nurtured because there are interesting things here, but nothing is done”.

“It’s badly neglected” “The municipal council does things in Sotogrande, but in the rest of the Guadiaro Valley they do very little; it’s badly neglected. Everything is in very bad condition, including streets and main roads. I think a lot more could have been done. A local party was voted in here which looked like it would pull the area out of the ditch and in the end they sunk it further by joining forces with the PP party. I don’t just think the area hasn’t developed, I think it’s worse than it was four years ago”.

“It’s the same as four years ago” “I can’t see that much has been done, it’s more or less the same as four years ago. I think everything needs improving, like giving us a good park, because the one we have is too small for all the children we have in the area. I also think there should be more. More facilities for teaching and training, and of course for businesspeople, who are given nothing, and to boot they put endless obstacles in front of us when it should be the other way round so that our businesses can prosper. I don’t think anything has been done over the past four years, we haven’t made any progress”.

“As residents we are sick of it” “This government has done nothing, the previous one did nothing and nobody does anything here generally. I don’t think it’s common to all of San Roque; rather, San Roque and whoever is in government have no time for the Guadiaro Valley. The old government was bad, and this one is still bad, and the next one remains to be seen, but I don’t think it will be much better. I think the streets need to be improved, cleaned up, because it’s all neglected. The area has not evolved over the last four years, quite the opposite, and as residents we are sick of it”.

“They don’t care about the people” “Everything has been somewhat neglected by the municipal council. I think the Guadiaro Valley needs the political leaders to care more about the people, because at present I don’t think they care much. There are so many things that need to be improved, like public safety, the streets are in a terrible state, and there are other things that I don’t want to mention because I’m totally apolitical, but as a resident I can see that so many things are lacking. Of course I think that over the past four years things have got worse and I hope the next government cares more about the people”.

“The area is just as bad” “Around here, at least in Guadiaro, the municipal council couldn’t care less. In San Roque town it’s a completely different story. I don’t think the area has improved at all; it’s just like it was, just as bad. There are so many things to do, like improving the showground; it needs to be kept clean because to be honest it’s awful. And the streets in general need to be cleaned more; a machine used to come through but for some time there’s been nothing. All in all, it’s small things that aren’t done, but they’re needed”.

Photodepilation with pulsed light

Angie Rondini

We all know what it is like to have undesired hair in certain very visible areas. An abundance of hair on the upper lip or chin for women or excessive hair on the back for men, to name just a few cases, can lead to major personal complexes, self esteem issues etc. Traditional depilation, whether with wax or a razor, is insufficient in these cases. Permanent hair removal is needed to restore confidence to the person who requires it. Among the permanent depilation techniques, photodepilation is the best option available to date. Photodepilation includes laser hair removal and intense pulsed light depilation, also known as IPL. The latter is ideal and highly recommended both for men and women. It is a permanent hair removal technique that is carried out progressively. The photodepilation method using pulsed light involves applying intense light that destroys the hair follicles and prevents them from growing. And in addition to removing undesired hair it also makes the skin become more and more silky and smooth. By order of frequency the quickest response to IPL depilation is achieved on: Legs, bikini line, underarms, chest, areola, back. IPL depilation is one of the most innovative hair removal methods. This is due to a number of characteristics that make it unbeatable. IPL depilation, while removing the hair progressively over several sessions, is a painless procedure, and consequently more and more women and men are opting for this technique. At Buddha-spa we have the latest technology and the best professionals to offer the best result at the best price.

EUC inspects Sotogrande infrastructures A technical team made up of external specialists and Urban Conservation Entity (EUC) maintenance staff have begun a Infrastructure Inspection Plan for the Sotogrande Resort. With this inspection, to take place over the next four months, the aim is to ascertain the general condition of the following infrastructures: • Roads (surfacing, pavements, verges, speed bumps, signage, paint) • Drainage network (manholes, drains and pipes) • Lighting (street lamps, electrical switchboards) • Green Areas (trees, vegetation)

Plots without buildings The EUC management have implemented this Infrastructure Inspection Plan in order to compile detailed technical and practical information on which to base an Action Plan to be developed in the future. Following the inspection period, a Renovation and Maintenance Plan will be prepared for all of the resort’s infrastructures. This plan will determine the maintenance and works schemes to be implemented over forthcoming years, establishing the necessary planning. The Resort Improvement Pro-

ject will form the backbone of the infrastructure improvement and maintenance actions in the EUC’s budget in the short, medium and long term. Since the beginning of the resort’s development there has not been a specific plan for maintenance and improvements and anything that was in poor condition was improved as and when necessary. Several decades later, establishing the current state of the resort, considering a reinvestment plan and compiling an efficient action plan will be vital for maintaining the standards of quality and excellence that have always characterised the Parques de Sotogrande resort.

Aunque muestran su to-

Empty plots The EUC would like to remind owners of empty plots that they are responsible for maintaining them. To avoid potential fire safety and security problems over the summer, the Entity asks these

owners to clear these plots now. The Entity reminds their owners that they are obliged to keep them clean and if they do not take action they will be sent a letter asking them to carry out this work. The EUC reminds them that the

owners’association’s resources are for work on the communal green spaces and not for private property. However, they will be pleased to recommend companies that can be hired to carry out this work and even to assess any estimates that are offered.

Sotogrande International School opened the gates at Los Pinos for its inaugural football event On Wednesday 6 April Sotogrande International School opened the gates at Los Pinos for its inaugural football event, using the magnificent Santa Maria Polo Club grounds for the very first time. More than 150 SIS students and teachers watched demonstrations and learnt new skills and techniques from experienced professional football coaches, led by Claudio Paul Cannigia. For some of our students, it was the first time they had played football on real grass! Our students, parents and the whole Sotogrande International School Community were able to enjoy an insight of what SIS will

now be able to offer in forthcoming months and years. Our magnificent extended sports facilities are extremely impressive in terms of the immaculate and safe grass playing surfaces, as well as convenient and beautiful scenery for spectators. Thanks go to our 'army' of behindthe-scenes helpers, organisers and facilitators, as well as the 'front-line' supervisors, teachers and coaches. Additional extras such as local TV, press and media, grounds men, onsite ambulance, PTA refreshments, bus companies, car parking attendants and security guards, all helped to make this historic event a truly memorable occasion.

Most thanks go to Santa Maria Polo Club and the new Sotogrande Sports Club for making all of this possible. High profile sports tournaments and matches with local, regional and international clubs and schools at all ages have already been arranged for the 2011-12 academic year. It is hoped that as the profile of Sotogrande Community sports continues to rise, more and more students and adults will join SIS and participate and be able to enjoy the spectacular Los Pinos pitches. Greater participation in sports will create numerous physical and social benefits, more successful teams, as well as a greater variety and

quality of opposition. Claudio Caniggia will be running a two day soccer training camp on

Travelling schools In the week from March 27 to April 2, 15 CEIP Gloria Fuertes pupils took part in the Escuelas Viajeras (‘Travelling Schools’) scheme, promoted by the Ministry of Education. The initiative is an educational programme in

which three groups of students from various regions of Spain live together and explore one of the 23 routes established throughout the country. Through a series of educational itineraries offering a wide range of learning

situations, harmonious coexistence is fostered on the basis of a respect for the linguistic, cultural, social and environmental diversity of the nation. The visited route corresponded to the island of Tenerife, which we shared with two other schools from the Iberian Peninsula: CRA Matarranya from Teruel and Escola Serra de Coll-Bas

from Carme (Barcelona). During the week we shared accommodation and activities with these two schools, which meant meeting new people, adapting to their customs and even sharing bedrooms. The places we visited included the Anaga Rural Park, Loro Parque (‘Parrot Park’), the Species Acclimatisation Garden, the

Museum of Science and the Cosmos, the Teide National Park and the cities of Puerto de La Cruz and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Both the students and the accompanying teacher agreed that it was a very nice experience in which we made many friends and that we would definitely do it again.

se. They let us put on their jackets and helmets and we held the hoses they use to put out fires… what an adventure! All the junior school pupils went down to see the fire engine and take part in this activity and there was universal excitement on the playground when the sirens went off.

We had a very fun morning and most of the kids went home hoping that one day they would become a fireman or firewoman. Finally, we would like to thank the firemen for their effort and interest during their visit, because they were able to adapt to the young age of the boys and girls.

Hurray for firemen! On Tuesday March 29, firemen came to our school, CEIP GLORIA FUERTES, to speak to us about their work and much more. The activity was organised for the school’s five-year-old pupils. First thing in the morning, Pepe (the fire-

Barlovento shows us how to buy The Mediterranean diet is known around the world and coveted by the most discerning palates. Sotogrande restaurants provide a good example of the superb cuisine prepared in this part of the world, as well as the excellent produce that is available in the area. One of the most representative examples is the experience and know-how of Francisco Gil, manager alongside his wife of one of the longest-standing establishments in the area, Barlovento in Torreguadiaro. One of the keys to the restau-

rant’s success and the loyalty of its customers is the direct involvement of the owner in the entire process of creating their dishes. We hitch a ride in his van to accompany Francisco on one of his weekly visits to the municipal market in Algeciras and this is what we found. For Barlovento, there are no seasonal menus, because the owners prefer to prepare dishes on a weekly basis depending on the produce they have bought. A blackboard shows customers a list of dishes

that can be sampled each week. This is ensures the clientele are never bored and that the options are varied continuously in line with the best ingredients available at any given time. A sure bet, which as Gil explains is what the regulars at his restaurant look for, is traditional cuisine. Gil himself, in addition to selecting the fish, seafood and meat, likes to get in the kitchen and delight his customers with dishes made with care and affection following the recommendations of our ancestors.

Massage is both an art and a science; as an art it has a living technical facet and it is therefore constantly changing and adapting. Its benefits have evolved from the most simple techniques for promoting relaxation and favouring sleep, to the specific development of more complex methods to alleviate or eliminate specific pains in the body. Technically, it is a manual evaluative (via palpation) and treatment method, applied to the surface of the body and transmitted by the mechanical pressure of the hand to the various organs of the human body. The main effects are listed below: • Mechanical: Referring to how the mechanical forces associated with each manipulation affect the tissues. • Physiological-hygienic: To provide more vigour to the body or alleviate tiredness, combining it with gentle exercise and thermal baths. • Preventative: To locate a tense or potentially injured area via palpation, communicating this to the recipient of the massage for treatment. To educate and promote health by recommending that the massage is combined with moderate exercise. • Therapeutic: To improve circulation, to treat restricted mobility between damaged tissues and to alleviate or reduce pain. Therapeutic massage must only be carried out by physiotherapists. • Aesthetic-hygienic: To improve the external appearance of the person, eliminating fat deposits, restoring muscle tone and alleviating tiredness. • Sports: To prepare a sportsperson for competition, before, during and after playing the sport. • Psychological-state of mind, or for relaxation: To provide a sense of safety and comfort, alleviating psychophysical tension.

Spanish golf had a good haul in the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande 2011 Cup: victory in the women’s competition through Camilla Hedberg, Mireia Prat and Noemí Jiménez and a well-deserved third place in the men’s tournament. The third day was pivotal for both Spanish teams. The women consolidated their position at the top of the leaderboard, this time with Mireia Prat at the helm, gaining a three-stroke lead over France, who established themselves as their main and almost their only rival. On the final day, Mireia Prat drew on her experience to all but seal the tournament with a round of 73 strokes. Camilla Hedberg, with 75 strokes on her scorecard, settled the competition. Spain finished nine strokes ahead of France and ten ahead of Germany, who had the talented Lara Katzy in their ranks, to complete their fourth victory (and second consecutive win) in this cate-

gory. To round of this great final, Camilla Hedberg clinched a symbolic victory in the individual competition. Men’s group In the men’s group, Spain ended in third place thanks to another good performance from Adrián Otaegui (69 strokes) and a notable round from Juan Francisco Sarasti (70). The pair from Gipuzkoa were a deciding factor in the team’s success, although their performance was not enough to hunt down a strong English side, who sealed their victory with 852 strokes, two fewer than France and three fewer than Spain. In the men’s competition, England took another step towards glory when they firmed up their leadership to the detriment of France and a Spanish quartet that slipped to third place. Juan Francisco Sarasti did his bit for the team with 67 strokes on a difficult day of golf.

Background In recent years it has been the women’s team that has brought the most joy to Spanish golf in the Sotogrande Cup. The victories in 2008 and, above all, in 2010 (brimming with excitement), have bolstered the home record in this veteran competition. In the history of this tournament Spain had won the title on three occasions (2004, 2008 and 2010) and had been runner-up in another four (2002, 2003, 2007 and 2009). In the men’s group, Spain achieved victory in 2005 and 2006 and finished second in 2003. Since then, the highly competitive nature of the tournament and the high standard of teams like England have prevented the title from remaining at home.

Patrick Allende replaces Rafael García Buitrago The manager until now of the Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande, Rafael García Buitrago, has left his post, as members have already been informed in an internal letter. The letter, signed by the chairman, Felipe Oriol, explains that “today (around March 21) we have reached an agreement with our manager who will cease providing his services to the club

and will be able to begin new professional projects”. Patrick Allende, who has held the position of course manager since January, has been named as the new club manager, although, as the letter states, “we will do our utmost to appoint a new manager in the near future to take on the functions pertaining to the club management alongside Patrick”.

Paul Lawrie: “I’m delighted, I can’t describe it. I’ve gone nine years without winning and that’s a long time. I started horribly, a bogey on the first, second and fifth, but the important thing is I didn’t panic, I was patient and didn’t lose my confidence”. José Manuel Lara: “It was a difficult day, the wind changed four or five times and I couldn’t get the birdies. I played well and held on to the course until the 12th when I hit a birdie. On the 13th I dropped a shot and on the 15th and 16th I hit two more very good birdies that put me in contention until the 18th, and then I don’t know what to call what happened. With a birdie on the 18th I would have had a chance to qualify for Finca Cortesín’s Volvo World Match Play. I went for the pin, it didn’t turn out well, but I will always go for the pin”.

The Scotsman Paul Lawrie was victorious on March 27 in the Andalusian Open by Turkish Airlines following a final round made very difficult by the changeable wind blowing at Parador Málaga Golf. Despite a bad start with three bogeys on the first round, Lawrie managed to keep his cool and draw on his experience to win with a par round. With this victory the Scotsman achieved his sixth European Tour title after a

nine year wait. The tournament was very open until the final holes, with the erratic start from the Scotsman bringing a large number of opponents into the fray. The bitter pill of the day was swallowed by José Manuel Lara, who played very well throughout the day and arrived at the 18th just a stroke behind second place. A triple bogey left him level in eighth place, although he was still the top Spaniard in the placings.

Declaraciones Paul Lawrie “Estoy contentísimo, no tengo palabras.

It is hoped that the competition will become a permanent fixture on the polo calendar in our area. In the overall placings, St. Mesme accumulated the highest number of points in the Iberian Polo Tour.

Ralph Rash returns to Dos Lunas Following his visit last February, the national youth selector and trainer, Ralph Rash, returned recently to the Dos Lunas Polo and Dressage Club to offer a clinic. He delivered another specialist dressage event for young riders, in which Bobby Fernández Bobadilla, the person responsible for forming the team that will represent us in Europe, was once

again present. Like on the first occasion, the observations, explanations and tips from the expert were given over two full days. On April 10 and 11 a total of 11 riders with their respective trainers took part and perfected their technique under the close eye of Rash. Unlike other professionals and also because they focus on

young riders, the clinics provided by this specialist aim to perfect technique alongside the trainers, who are normally present at the event as a key element to ensure the good development of the students. The dressage expert establishes guidelines to follow, ensuring they can be continued in the riders’ daily sessions.

About Ralph Rush Ralph Michael Rush, born in Hamburg on February 23, 1956, has since January 1 this year been the new dressage trainer of the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation for the youth and junior age groups. His background qualifies him as a professional trainer, a specialist in equestrian centre management and he is a state-certified professional instructor trained at the Cologne Trainer Academy and the German Olympic Committee in Warendorf. He has worked with Ottokar Pohlmann, Herbert Rebién, Fritz Tempelma, Siegfried Peilicke, Willi Schultheis, Harry Boldt, Jean Bemelmans and Heinz-Dieter Donner. He trains riders and horses up to Grand Prix level and he is a national judge, also up to Grand Prix level. From 1985 to 1996 he was director of the ‘Deutsche Reitschule’ in Warendorf, the German centre for training and assessing professional dressage riders and judges. He is a founder and trainer of the ‘Grand School Quadrille’ of professional riders, taking part in major events both in Germany and abroad. He is also a founder and trainer of Trakehners’ ‘Grand Prix Quadrille’. Since 1998 he has been the owner of Hesselhof, where horses are trained from scratch to Grand Prix level.

Riding Therapy Centre celebrates 2nd anniversary In early April the Santa María Polo Club Foundation Riding Therapy Centre celebrated its 2nd anniversary with a big party for the families involved at the Río fields. On April 9 the polo grounds hosted a day of celebra-

tions in which activities for all the family were held. Sports, children’s games, bouncy castles, an Argentine barbecue and afternoon tea. The excuse for all of this was to celebrate the second year of life of this foundation, which

does very important work every day, because the efforts of the professionals who work at the centre, led by Rafael Reina, mean that over 90 people with disabilities can receive riding therapy, which improves their quality of life.

2010. And, following the earthquake in Japan and the ter rible consequences of the resulting tsunami and the nuclear disaster, we have once again demonstrated our solidarity: the book of condolences made available by the Japanese embassy, which has been filled with countless

messages, the statements made and mass gatherings held by NGOs and civil associations, the charity phone numbers from companies like Vodafone and Movistar with which to make donations via text message and celebrities who use their fame to send messages of solidarity.

Spain lends its support to Japan Since March 11, there have been many demonstrations of solidarity from the Spanish people, showing their support for Japan following the disaster that has caused over 5,000 deaths, with over 9,000 still missing, according to official figures from the Nipponese government.

Although the Japanese government did not call for international humanitarian aid, it has received many offers of help from various countries and NGOs all over the world. These countries include Spain, which through the Humanitarian Action Office of the AECID

activated its emergency response mechanism within a few hours of the earthquake taking place. The Spanish have shown a great deal of sensitivity towards major disasters like the Asian tsunami in 2004 or the Haiti earthquake of
