El polo internacional de nivel alto atraviesa uno de los momentos de mayor renova ción técnica y competitiva en décadas. La tradicional hegemonía de las grandes figuras consagradas —con apellidos como Pieres, Cambiaso, Mac Donough, Caset, Nero o “Pelón” Stirling— sigue vigente, pero convive cada vez más con una camada de jóvenes que ya están compitiendo de igual a igual, alcanzando los más altos hándicaps y transformando el ritmo y el estilo del juego. En menos de una década, el polo ha sido testigo de cómo jugadores que aún no han cumplido los 25 años alcanzan 9 y hasta 10 go les de hándicap en Argentina, Inglaterra, Sotogrande o Estados Unidos. Ya no hablamos de promesas, sino de protagonistas consolidados. Los casos más deslumbrantes, obviamente, son los de Barto y ‘Jeta’ Castagnola o Poroto Cambiaso. Los tres alcanzaron los 10 goles en Argentina antes de los 23 años y son piezas fundamentales en las mejores organizaciones del mundo. Su madurez táctica, su capacidad de liderazgo en cancha y su regularidad física los sitúan como referentes no solo del futuro, sino del presente del polo internacional.

Pero este fenómeno no se acaba en ellos. A su alrededor crece un núcleo competitivo de jóvenes que también alcanzan un nivel ‘top’ y se consolidan en los torneos de Triple Corona, UK, US Open o la temporada de Sotogrande. Jugadores como Juan Martín Zubía, Nacho Novillo Astrada Jr., Chavanne, Lauhlé, Tomás Panelo o Cruz Heguy representan una generación con formación técnica depurada, mentalidad profesional desde la adolescencia y una comprensión del juego colectivo que desafía cualquier expectativa.

Esta evolución no es casual. Hoy entrenan con metodologías específicas, combinan técnica individual con colectiva y forman parte de estructuras deportivas que entienden el alto rendimiento como un proceso integral. El resultado es un estilo de juego más rápido, más físico, más táctico y, sobre todo, más competitivo. Sotogrande, como sede del polo de élite en Europa, ha sido y sigue siendo un escenario privilegiado para esta transición generacional. Aquí se unen nombres de gran trayectoria con jóvenes figuras emergentes. Es una convivencia virtuosa que enriquece el espectáculo y permite a los aficionados disfrutar de un deporte en plena transformación.

El futuro del polo ya no es una proyección. Está en la cancha. Con menos de 25 años, estos jugadores no sólo han llegado: ya han ganado, mandan y en muchos de los casos, dominan y son la referencia. Si el desafío era asegurar el futuro del polo como deporte profesional de élite, la respuesta está servida. La nueva era no es una promesa: es una realidad.

High level international polo is going through one of the moments of greatest technical and competitive renewal in decades. The traditional hegemony of the big revered figures -with surnames such as Pieres, Cambiaso, Mac Donough, Caset, Nero or “Pelon” Stirling— remains in place, but it increasingly coexists with a group of young players who are already competing on an equal footing, reaching the highest handicaps and transforming the pace and style of play.

In less than a decade, polo has witnessed how players who have not yet turned 25 are reaching9andeven10handicapgoalsinArgentina, England, Sotogrande, and the United States. We are no longer talking about young hopefuls, but rather wellestablished stars. The most dazzling cases obviously are those of Barto and ‘Jeta’ Castagnola and Poroto Cambiaso. All three attained 10 goals in Argentina before the age of 23 and are crucial pieces in the world’s best organisations. Their technical maturity, leadership ability on the pitch and physical consistency make them benchmarks not only of the future, but also of the present of international polo. However, this phenomenon doesn’t end with them. There is a competitive core of players growing around them who are also reaching a top level and establishing themselves at the tournaments of the Triple Crown, UK, US Open and the Sotogrande season. Players such as Juan Martín Zubía, Nacho Novillo Astrada Jr., Chavanne, Lauhlé, Tomás Panelo and Cruz Heguy represent a generation with refined technical training, a professional mentality since adolescence and an understanding of collective play that challenges all expectations.

This progress isn’t a coincidence. Today, players train with specific methodologies, they combine individual technique with group technique, and they form part of sports structures that understand high performance as an integral process. The result is a quicker, more physical, more tactical and, above all, more competitive style of play.

Sotogrande, as the headquarters of elite polo in Europe, has been and remains a privileged setting for this generational transition. Here, names with great careers mix with young emerging players. It is virtuous social coexistence that enriches the spectacle and enables fans to enjoy a sport that is really transforming.

The future of polo is no longer a projection. It is on the pitch. Aged under 25, this players have not only arrived: they have already won, they rule, and in many cases, they dominate and are benchmarks. If the challenge were to ensure the future of polo as an elite professional sport, the answer is served. The new era isn’t a promise: it is a reality.

Un placer saludarte y que estés de nuevo por Sotogrande en plena temporada. ¿Un sitio diferente y especial más allá del polo?

Totalmente, agosto aquí está muy bueno. El año pasado me quedé en Inglaterra jugando en esta época pero tengo un gran recuerdo por los años anteriores en los que he venido. Es un lugar único para jugar al polo y diferente al resto de sitios a los que viajamos. Personalmente no soy un gran entusiasta del mar pero el destino es increíble. El lugar, la gente, el club, las canchas, lo competitiva que es la temporada, todo está genial. En pocos lugares del mundo tienen una atención de ese nivel a jugadores y patrones. Llegas a la cancha y está todo preparado. Es un sitio de primer nivel para disfrutar y competir.

Hablemos de tus inicios y tradición familiar, ¿en qué momento te das cuenta que más allá de una afición el polo podría ser una forma de vida?

Con sinceridad, en mi caso nunca hubo plan “b”. En la mesa dónde comemos, con mi familia, entre mis padres, el polo siempre estuvo en el centro de todas las conversaciones. Qué potranca está por nacer, tal o cual yegua anda bien. Ya fuera con más o menos fortuna, con más o menos plata, mi destino sabía que iba a estar ligado al polo. Si no hubiera sido posible como profesional, hubiese estado ligado como criador, manager o petisero, lo que fuese pero cerca del polo.

Y ves que vas subiendo nivel…

Vas trabajando, día a día, de poquito a poquito. Ves cómo se te van abriendo puertas y cerrando otras. Esunprocesodifícilydeconstante esfuerzo.

It is a pleasure to welcome you and that you are back in Sotogrande again in the peak season. Is it a different and special place beyond polo?

Completely, August is very good here. Last year, I stayed in England playing this season but I have great memories of previous years when I came. It is a unique place for playing polo and different to the other places we travel to. Personally, I am not a great enthusiast of the sea but the destination is incredible. The place, the people, the club, the pitches, how competitive the season is, everything is great. There are few places in the world that have treatment of that level for players and patrons. You get to the pitch and everything is ready. It is a top rate place for having fun and competing.

Let’s talk about your beginnings and family tradition, at what point did you realise that in addition to being a hobby, polo could be a way of life?

Honestly, in my case there was never a plan b. At the table where we eat, with my family, with my parents, polo was always at the centre of every conversation. What foal is about to be born, such and such a mare is doing well. With more or less luck, with more or less money, I knew that my fate would be linked to polo. If it hadn’t been possible as a professional, I would have been linked as a breeder, manager, or stable boy, whatever it was but close to polo.

And you saw that your level was gradually rising...

You work, day by day, little by little. You see how some doors open up and others close. It is a difficult process and with constant work.

Aterrizas en Sotogrande después de un gran año, el pasado curso en la Triple Corona la cosa se dio bien con La Hache…

El pasado año se dio genial, la verdad. Venia de muchos años en Cría La Dolfina, en el que me ayudaban mucho y di el salto a competir con todo, en un equipo de máxima exigencia y a defenderme con mis caballos. Pero visto con perspectiva, creo que fue un gran movimiento y paso al frente. Ganamos en Tortugas y jugamos dos semifinales. Lástima que no llegásemos más lejos pero avanzamos y peleamos los torneos que es lo importante. Este año se presenta también muy lindo.

Para 2025, las expectativas de nuevo con UAE Polo también son altas…

Sabemos el equipo que tenemos y que podemos dar mucho juego. Tácticamente, vamos estar muy cómodos en posiciones y compenetrados. Lukín [Monteverde] y yo atravesamos un buen momento, nos divertimos mucho dentro de la cancha y podemos ser un complemento perfecto. Con Juanma Nero y Polito Pieres en las puntas, podemos dar mucho aire y velocidad en el medio. Es un equipo competitivo y muy equilibrado, espero que podamos ser muy competitivos y pelear por lo máximo, ya que el año próximo será muy reñido.

Se presenta una Triple Corona 2025 de muchos quilates…

Por supuesto. Supone también una gran motivación añadida, para el resto de rivales, cuando se ve que los contrarios van igual o más fuertes. Se ha formado un fantástico equipo juntándose los Cambiaso y Castagnola; precisamente ello hace suba aún más el nivel y que se haga más especial jugar ante ellos, llegar a una final y quién sabe, si ganar. Hace crecer la atención, los detalles, la motivación, buscarse las vueltas tácicas, armarse mejor de caballos, etc.

¿Se viste uno hasta diferente cuando sabe que va a jugar en la 1 de Palermo?

Es una sensación muy linda por todo lo que rodea a los días previos a los partidos importantes, todo. El propio viaje a Buenos Aires es muy lindo y siempre tengo en mente lo que me costó entrar, llegar ahí y lo lejos que estuve. Fue difícil hacerse el hueco. Me encanta vivir todos esos momentos, la tensión de la caballeriza el día antes, los petiseros, todo lo que rodea a un partido así lo hace especial.

You arrive in Sotogrande after a great year, last year at the Triple Crown things went well with La Hache... Last year went brilliantly, to be honest. I had been with Cría La Dolfina for many years, in which they helped me a lot and I took the leap up to compete with everything I had, in a very demanding team and to battle with my horses. However, viewed with perspective, I think it was a great move and step forward. We won in Tortugas and played two semi-finals. It is a shame we didn’t go further but we progressed and competed in the tournaments which is the most important thing. This year is also looking very good.

In 2025, expectations are once again high with UAE Polo...

We know the team we have and that we can really compete. Tactically, we are going to be very comfortable in positions and very closely knit. Lukín [Monteverde] and I are in good form, we have a lot of fun on the pitch and we can be the perfect complement. With Juanma Nero and Polito Pieres at the ends, we can provide a lot of air and speed in the middle. It is competitive and very wellbalanced team, I hope that we can be very competitive and battle for the top prize which is very tough this year.

The 2025 Triple Crown looks top quality...

Of course. It also had a great added motivation, for the other opponents, when you see that the opponents are as strong or stronger. A fantastic team has been formed, bringing together the Cambiaso and Castagnola siblings; indeed, that makes the level rise even more and makes it more special to play against them, to reach a final, and who knows, to win. It leads to growth in treatment, details, motivation, looking for tactical twists, getting better horses, etc.

También se dió bien en Inglaterra… Es increíble lo competitivo que está, cerca de 20 equipos de muy alto nivel. Jugamos con equipo nuevo y tuvimos la desgracia del fallecimiento del patrón [Sunjay Kapur]. Era una temporada buena, la primera vez que jugaba con mi hermano Benja los 22 goles, hicimos una buena combinación. Pero se dio esa circunstancia especial, ya todo se hizo un poco raro y no pudimos llegar a los momentos decisivo pero espero que juguemos de nuevo juntos en 2026 y dar pelea.

Una situación fortuita de Adolfo Cambiaso te llevó a acariciar la Gold Cup… Bueno, es más bien una anécdota. Ésa no la cuento

como triunfo mío, ojalá pueda ganarla pronto. La realidad es que después de la caída a él lo echan dos minutos y quedaban dos y medio, me parece. Prácticamente lo vi todo desde fuera.

Existe una relación de años con La Dolfina…

Obvio, me ayudaron mucho en esa etapa, fueron tres años fantásticos y de gran aprendizaje. Ahora somos rivales dentro de la cancha pero la relación es fantástica.

¿Te ves en un futuro próximo con 10 goles?

Ojalá. En Argentina la diferencia de contar con 10 goles es porque ganaste un título de Triple Corona. En mi caso, será la consecuencia de haber conseguido algo importante. Es con lo que uno sueña todas las noches. Es lo más lindo que se puede sentir como polista y amante de este deporte; es mi gran objetivo. Ya disfruto mucho de jugar a este nivel pero el reto es llegar a ganar un gran torneo de la Triple Corona. No te quita el sueño pero lo sueñas todas las noches. Siempre está en mente, cuando compras una yegua o repasas el más mínimo detalle, ese chip lo tienes metido para mejorar allá.

¿Cómo llevas la responsabilidad de ser uno de los grandes nombres para el gran relevo generacional del futuro del polo mundial?

Realmente no te pones a pensar en esa medida entre veteranos y jóvenes. En el polo está más difuminado y no se idealiza tanto como en el fútbol y otros deportes. El polo es un mundo más chiquito, son tus ídolos pero desde jovencito, con suerte, te ves jugando con ellos alguna práctica y convives con los grandes jugadores con más asiduidad. Por supuesto que sientes gran respeto por lo que son, auténticas leyendas, y por lo que han hecho, pero en la cancha son uno más y así debes competir. Ellos y nosotros.

Y siguen peleando fuerte… Más todavía. Dan mucha guerra, son buenísimos pero todos aspiramos a tener nuestro trocito de gloria y queremos ganar.

Do you look at yourself differently when you know you are going to play on pitch 1 at Palermo?

It is a very beautiful feeling due to everything that surrounds the days before important matches, everything. The trip itself to Buenos Aires is very beautiful and I always bear in mind how much work it took to get into it, get there and how far I was. It was difficult to carve out a niche. I love enjoying all those moments, the tension in the stable the day before, the stable boys, everything surrounding a match like that makes it special.

Things also went well in England...

It is incredible how competitive it is, close to 20 teams playing at a very high level. We played with a new team and had the tragedy of the passing of the patron (Sunjay Kapur). It was a good season, the first time I played with my sibling Benja in the 22 goal category, we linked up well. However, the special circumstancearose,everythingwasabitstrangeand we were unable to reach the decisive moments but I hope that we will play again in 2026 and compete.

A chance situation with Adolfo Cambiaso led you to come within touching distance of the Gold Cup... Well, it is more like an anecdote. I can’t tell it like a victory of my own, I hope I can win it soon. The reality is that after the fall he was taken off for two minutes and there were two and a half left, I think. I practically watched everything from the sidelines.

There is a relationship going back years with La Dolfina...

Of course, they helped me a lot in that period, those were three fantastic years with lots of learning. Now, we are rivals on the pitch, but the relationship is fantastic.

Can you see yourself in the near future with 10 goals?

I wish. In Argentina, the difference of having 10 goals is because you won a Triple Crown title. In my case, it will be the consequence of having achieved something important. That is what you dream of every night. It is the most beautiful thing you can experience as a polo player and lover of this sport; that is my big aim. I already really enjoy playing at this level but the challenge is to end up winning a major Triple Crown tournament. It doesn’t keep you awake but you dream of it every night. It is always in your head, when you buy a mare or look at the smallest detail, you have that chip there to improve more.

¿Qué hace Tomás Panelo cuando se baja del caballo?

Bueno, ahora estoy de novio [ríe]. Justo ella vino a acompañarme unos días a Sotogrande y aunque soy un poco ‘amargo’ para todos los temas de la playa y tal [bromea]. Estoy disfrutando de tener aquí también a mi hermano, un compañero de colegio que también está de visita y el grupo de gente con el que trabajo desde hace años. Tengo un grupo muy bueno para pasarlo bien, tranquilo.

¿Y otro deporte?

Principalmente pádel, algo de gimnasio y mis rutinas de preparación.

Por último, no vienes a Sotogrande de vacaciones, ¿ a pelear por lo máximo?

Por supuesto, no tengo otra manera de entender el polo. El lugar está buenísimo y a corto plazo estoy convencido que pasará en contar en el Alto con 10/12 equipos seguro. Es un destino perfecto que da continuidad a Inglaterra y va a seguir creciendo. Ojalá también siga aumentando el Mediano. Y en mi caso, en particular, toca pelear cada copa, partido, chukker y jugada. Sería muy lindo volver a ganar en Sotogrande [2019, Copa de Oro con MB POLO].

How do you deal with the responsibility of being one of the big names for the great generational handover of global polo?

You don’t really think of that division between senior and junior players. Everything is blurrier in polo and it isn’t idealised as much as in football and other sports. Polo is a smaller world, they are your idols but from a very early age, with luck, you can play the odd practice session with them and socialise more regularly with great players. Of course, you feel great respect for what they are, true legends, and for what they have done, but on the pitch they are just another player and that is how you must compete. Them and us.

And they continue to battle hard... Even more. They really battle, they are so good but we all have to aim to have our little piece of glory and we want to win.

What does Tomás Panelo do when he gets off the horse?

Well, now I’ve got a girlfriend (laughs). She came to Sotogrande for a few days with me and even though I am little ‘bitter’ about everything to do with the beach and so forth (joking). I am also

enjoying having my brother here, a school friend who is visiting and the group of people I have been working with for years. I have a very good group for having a good, relaxed time.

And any other sports?

Mainly padel, a bit of gym, and my preparation routines.

Lastly, you aren’t in Sotogrande for holidays, are you fighting for the top prize?

Of course, I don’t see polo any other way. The place is amazing and in the short term I am convinced that it will have 10/12 teams in the High handicap. It is a perfect destination that follows on from England and it will continue to grow. I hope that the Medium handicap also continues to grow. And in my case, in particular, I have to compete for each cup, match, chukker, and play. It would be really beautiful to win again in Sotogrande (2019, Gold Cup with MB POLO).

The formidable team, led by Hilario Ulloa and with Rocho Torreguitar of Sotogrande in its ranks, bagged one of the most iconic prizes of the world polo season when they overcame La Dol昀椀na Marqués de Riscal in the 昀椀nal.

Tras pelear y batallar en una grandísima temporada en Sotogrande y en su quinta comparecencia en una Gran Final de la Queen’s Cup, al fin, el conjunto de Park Place pudo saborear la gloria al levantar uno de los trofeos más codiciados y influyentes del mundo del polo. Una final reñida ante La Dolfina Marqués de Riscal que se decretó finalmente por un solo tanto de diferencia (9-8) y que permitió a Andrey Borodin levantar el trofeo entregado por Laurent Feniou, director general de Cartier en Inglaterra.

Sabor y domino francés en la Copa de las Naciones. Un espectáculo de muy buen polo el vivido en el Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly. Polo abierto, pocas faltas y un ritmo alto. Las canchas principales, con bastante público, disfrutaron de un espectáculo de primer nivel en esta edición de 2025, con mucho sabor y dominio francés. El triunfo de Occitania-Francia, en la categoría principal y Hauts-de-France en la femenina, se impusieron en dos emocionantes duelos finales.

En cuanto al desarrollo del encuentro decisivo, mientras que Occitania-Francia parecía tener el control (5-2) en el segundo chukker, Argentina remontó con firmeza gracias al magistral juego de Matías Torres Zavaleta, quien lanzó ataques extraordinarios a través de una sólida defensa sostenida por los hermanos Ramiro y Simón Zavaleta. La Royal Windsor Cup es una de las mayores tradiciones de la temporada británica de polo y logra reunir, además de un gran elenco de organizaciones y polistas de primera talla internacional; diferentes actividades y competiciones paralelas que elevan la calidad y la vistosidad de una cita singular y única. Por supuesto, también exhibiciones y paseos de carruajes de época o incluso, acrobacias a lomos de un equino, animan una de las jornadas más virtuosas y multidisciplinares de la campaña en Reino Unido.

Tradition, legend, epic, dynasties, honour and legacy are some of the ideas that are resonating, even now that we’re past the first quarter of the twenty-first century, between the goalposts and on the fields with the British season in full swing, with that medieval air and aroma in the atmosphere. The Royal Windsor Cup is one of the greatest traditions of the British polo season, managing to attract – in addition to a large cast of world-class organisations and polo players – various parallel activities and competitions that raise the quality and spectacle of a unique occasion.

Of course, exhibitions and vintage carriage rides, or even equestrian vaulting, also liven up the most virtuoso and multidisciplinary events in the UK campaign. As for the polo itself in the Royal Windsor, teams go up to a 15-goal handicap, and in the 2025 edition, the

El conjunto ganador estuvo formado por Babar Naseem, también otro habitual algunos veranos de Sotogrande, junto a Hugo Taylor, Mía Cambiaso y Tomás Panelo.

Mientras que los subcampeones alinearon a Marty Romualdez, Lucas Nottin, Simon PRadro y Santi Laborde, también muy conocidos en la temporada sotograndina y de Ayala Polo Club.

Destacar también que en la final subsidiaria, la victoria fue para Amanara Polo Team, subcampeón en el año 2024, al derrotar por 8 goles a 7 al conjunto de Emlor Polo. UN NUEVO TEMPLO CREATIVO EN EL CORAZÓN DE MADRID

Espejo firma uno de los espacios más sorprendentes del momento en el barrio de Las Letras, epicentro de cultura, arteysofisticaciónmadrileña.Sunuevoestudio—situado en la planta baja de un edificio histórico en la calle Santa María 17— fusiona interiorismo y arte en más de 240 metros cuadrados que respiran elegancia y carácter.

La atmósfera del lugar seduce desde el primer paso: techos con molduras neoclásicas, paredes tapizadas que rozan los cuatro metros de altura y suelos de piedra natural que refuerzan la idea de que aquí el diseño se vive con los cinco sentidos. Pero si hay algo que define este espacio es su magistral trabajo de ebanistería a medida: puertas XXL de tres metros, embocaduras con lamas verticales, contraventanas y rodapiés de 30 cm con enchufes integrados que hablan de precisión, oficio y una visión estética fuera de lo común.

El estudio se divide en dos mundos perfectamente conectados: por un lado, los despachos, amueblados en roble teñido en blanco donde fluye la creatividad; por otro, una galería de arte contemporáneo con estanterías de roble negro, concebida como un espacio vivo donde el diseño se encuentra con la expresión artística. Nombres como Julio Bauzá, Elena Raposo o BacBac Estudio ya han colgado aquí sus obras.

Espejo has put his name to one of the most surprising spaces of the moment in the Las Letras neighbourhood, the epicentre of culture, art and sophistication in Madrid. His new studio – located on the ground floor of a historic building at Calle Santa María 17 – combines interior design and art over more than 240 square metres that exude elegance and character.

The atmosphere of the place strikes you as soon as you walk through the door: ceilings with neoclassical mouldings, upholstered walls almost four metres high and natural stone floors that reinforce the idea that, here, design is experienced with all five senses. But if there’s one thing that defines this space, it’s the masterful bespoke cabinetmaking: XXL 3-metre doors, doorframes with vertical slats, shutters and 30 cm skirting boards with integrated plug sockets that embody precision, craft and extraordinary aesthetic vision.

The studio is divided into two perfectly connected worlds: on the one hand, the offices, furnished in white-washed oak, where the creativity flows; and on the other, a contemporary art gallery with black oak shelves, conceived as a living space where design meets artistic expression. Names like Julio Bauzá, Elena Raposo and BacBac Estudio have hung their works here.

A FAMILY VILLA: A PLACE WHERE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SPEAK THE SAME LANGUAGE

Manuel Espejo’s studio has demonstrateditsmasteryagainwithitsdesign for a spectacular family villa of more than 600 square meters in a prime location by the sea. The project was conceived with total creative freedom, with the client having complete faith in the interior designer and his team to create a home where every detail exudes harmony and sophistication.

The house, fully orientated towards the outdoors, offers a fluid fusion of architecture and landscape. The garden – lush, structured and full of places for contemplation – doesn’t just surround the home, but also enters it, blurring

the boundaries between inside and out. Large windows, smooth transitions and a palette of organic materials reinforce this feeling of continuity with the environment. Inside, the villa has six en-suite bedrooms, three living rooms, two kitchens and an impressive garden with various areas in which to eat, gather or simply enjoy a drink in good company.

The main thread of the project is the serene warmth of light tones, present in walls, floors and ceilings, which amplify the natural light and provide an atmosphere of constant calm. All the furniture was made to measure by the studio, creating bold and unique pieces in fine materials like natural oak, stone and light-coloured linen. Generous volumes and honest textures complete a timeless and elegant aesthetic language. More than a house, this villa is a contemporary retreat where luxury translates into balance, naturalness and unpretentious design.

UN HOTEL DE AUTOR EN EL CORAZÓN DE MADRID

Espejo firma la profunda transformación del Hotel Francisco I, un clásico madrileño ubicado en la icónica calle Arenal, a escasos pasos del Palacio Real y la Puerta del Sol. El proyecto, que abarca una renovación integral del edificio, convierte este emblemático establecimiento en un hotel de autor con alma contemporánea y vocación urbana. La quinta planta, con 22 habitaciones, ya ha sido completamente renovada, reflejando el sello inconfundible del estudio: elegancia atemporal, materiales nobles y una cuidada atención al detalle. A SIGNATURE HOTEL IN THE HEART OF MADRID

Espejo is the designer behind the transformation of Hotel Francisco I, a Madrid classic located on the iconic Calle Arenal, a short walk from the Royal Palace and Puerta del Sol. The project, a complete renovation of the building, will turn this emblematic establishment into a signature hotel with a contemporary and urban spirit. The fifth floor, with 22 rooms, has already been completely renovated, reflecting the studio’s unmistakable hallmark: timeless elegance, fine materials and close attention to detail. This year, the hotel is taking another step forward with the opening of the ground floor, where a sophisticated culinary space has been created that redefines the hotel breakfast experience.

Across more than 300 square metres, the restaurant is arranged into six different

spaces: foyer, kitchen, buffet and three rooms with their own personality – The Gallery, The Lounge and The Library – designed as versatile spaces for breakfast, coffee, working, meetings or even private or corporate events. Functionality and style coexist here in perfect harmony.

The finishes are simply exceptional. The floor has a spectacular black and white layout, forming a geometric pattern that spans the entire space. The walls are lined with natural oak, like the bespoke furniture, which includes high and low tables, upholstered chairs and benches between walls that create cosy nooks. The ambience evokes the warmth of a well-designed house, where everything makes you want to stay.

Home automation, a key part of the project, adds an extra level of comfort and sophistication. The system makes it possible to adapt the lighting to each time of day and season of the year, enhancing the sensory experience of the space. In the buffet area, the innovative flat worktops with integrated hot and cold areas are a technical solution aimed at maintaining the highest culinary and design standards.

“Palermo es la gran catedral del polo mundial y trabajamos por asegurar su futuro”

Un placer tenerte aquí en Sotogrande, en plena temporada, y poder compartir contigo algunas reflexiones en esta nueva etapa. Entre otras muchas ocupaciones, entiendo también está la seguir forjando ese vínculo entre Sotogrande y el polo argentino. En tu caso, también deportivo y personal.

Así es. Tengo desde hace muchísimos años una estrecha relación con España y su Federación, como bien se sabe, además de ser Sotogrande un lugar increíble para disfrutar y vivir el polo. Es fundamental también nuestra proyección y compartir esta gran temporada, como también estuve hace poco en Inglaterra.

Lo primero que me cuestiono, ante un paso tan importante como asumir la presidencia, es conocer la motivación que te lleva a asumir un cargo así…

La verdad es que siempre me atrajo la gerencia, es algo que heredé de mi padre y de alguna manera mi carrera como polista ya se hizo, era el momento de colocarme en el otro lado. Amigos y gente cercana al mundo del polo también me animaron a dar un paso al frente e involucrarme, también se combina con que atravieso un buen momento en mi vida en el que podía dedicarle el tiempo necesario. Aunque hoy, desde cualquier parte del mundo puedes andar conectado. Tanto yo, como todo el equipo que me acompaña, estamos dando los primeros pasos y por supuesto, sabemos que es un desafío espectacular. Estamos metidos de lleno tratando de ordenar todo de la forma que entendemos que debería ser.

It is a pleasure to have you here in Sotogrande, in the peak season, and to be able to share some reflections in this new stage. Among many other pursuits, I understand you also want to continue to forge the link between Sotogrande and Argentine polo. In your case, it is also sporting and personal.

Indeed. For many years, I have had a close relationship with Spain and its Federation, as you know, and Sotogrande is also an incredible place for enjoying and experiencing polo. Our projection is also crucial and sharing this great season, as I was also in England recently.

The first think I ask myself, faced with such an important step as taking on the presidency, is what is the motivation to take on a role like that... Honestly, I have always been attracted to management, it is something I inherited from my father, and in a way I have already had my career as a polo player, it was time to be on the other side. Friends and people close to the world of polo also encouraged me to take a step forward and get involved, it also goes alongside the fact that I am going through a good time in my life when I could devote the necessary time to it. Although today, fromanywhereintheworld,youcanbeconnected. Both me, and the entire team that supports me, we are taking the initial steps and of course, we know that it is a spectacular challenge. We are fully immersed trying to arrange everything the way we believe it should be.

¿Has tenido tiempo de sacar un primer diagnóstico sobre el estado actual del polo y su proyección?

Está en un momento espectacular. Disfrutamos de grandes temporadas tanto en Argentina como en otros destinos que se han ganado su peso, tales como Estados Unidos, Inglaterra o Sotogrande. Así también como nuevos enclaves emergentes y todo ello fluctúa a favor del deporte. En el caso más local, la temporada argentina pinta espectacular con muchos equipos de gran nivel Es obvio que el Abierto tiene una gran exposición, pero hay mucho polo más allá. Es fantástico compartir todo ello también con personas que nos visitan y están apostando por el polo.

¿Hay muchos pasos que dar hacia una mayor profesionalización del entorno y estructuras que rodean al polo?

Siempre hay aspectos en los que seguir creciendo pero observo con optimismo como hay mucho trabajo de gran calidad alrededor del polo no sólo en Argentina, en muchos países, así como empresas que también se involucran en el polo. Debemos aspirar a no conformarnos y seguir con esa dinámica de mejorar, es un trabajo de progresivo y continuo. En definitiva, el polo es una gran industria de manera directa e indirecta. Son muchos sectores en los que tiene una gran influencia: jugadores, petiseros, cuidadores, dirigentes, criadores, domadores, herreros, transportes, comida, etc. En el caso de nuestra directiva, somos personas muy vinculadas al polo y con una visión que trataremos, paso a paso, ir posicionando para continuar evolucionando y creciendo.

¿Y la juventud le sigue?

Cada día más. Lo podemos comprobar en los torneos que hacemos para chicos en Pilar, se citan más de 70-90 jóvenes, de corta edad que viven ya intensamente el polo. La cantidad de chicos que se involucran en el deporte es altísima, supone algo especial y distinto en Argentina. Muchos de ellos, luego, seguirán sus caminos y otros hacia profesionalismo, pero la pasión está muy viva. Es algoquevaennuestracultura,vescanchasdepolo de una punta a otra de Argentina. El polo tiene algo muy especial que no tiene otros deportes. Es un deporte de equipo, amigos, familias; conviven perfectamente profesionales y amateurs, tiene una relación sana y fantástica con entidades y empresas. Lo convierten en algo muy especial y único.

Have you had time to get an initial diagnosis aboutthecurrentstateofpoloanditsprojection?

It is enjoying a spectacular moment. We are enjoying great seasons in both Argentina and in other destinations that have earned their influence, such as the United States, England, and Sotogrande. As well as new emerging areas, and everything is changing in favour of the sport. On a more local level, the Argentine season is looking spectacular with lots of top teams. It is obvious that the Open has great exposure, but there is a lot more polo beyond it. It is also fantastic to share all that with people who visit us and who are committing to polo..

Are there many steps to take towards greater professionalization of the area and structures around polo?

There are always aspects where there is room for growth buy I am optimistic about how there is lots of great quality work around polo, not only in Argentina,inlotsofcountries,aswellascompanies that are also getting involved in polo. We have to aspire to not get comfortable and to continue the dynamic of improving, it is progressive and ongoing work. Ultimately, polo is a great industry, directly and indirectly. There are lots of sectors with a great influence: players, stable workers, carers, managers, breeders, tamers, farriers, transport staff, food staff, etc. In the case of our management, we are people who are very linked to polo, and with a vision that we will try, step by step, to position for ongoing development and growth.

Venimosdedisfrutarañosdoradosconjugadores que serán historia de este deporte, pero vemos que ya aprieta otra generación nueva de gran calidad. El futuro ya es presente en las canchas… El polo no nos deja de sorprender. Tuve la suerte de ver y convivir diferentes épocas y camadas de jugadores. Vemos como hoy, por suerte, ya aseguran el relevo a grandes jugadores y están haciéndose su hueco nombres como Poroto Cambiaso, los hermanos Castagnola, los Panelo, Chavanne,Lauhlé,etc.Existeunafuturoasegurado con jugadores espectaculares, los chicos salen aún más preparados de lo que estaban a su edad anteriormente. Y por supuesto, ya compiten en grandes temporadas y ganan campeonatos. Tenemos un futuro apasionante.

¿Y el crecimiento del polo femenino?

Ha crecido de una manera impresionante. Hasta hace 10-15 años había pocas jugadoras y proyección; algo que sí comenzaba a darse en Europa, Estados Unidos y otros puntos del mapa. En la actualidad el cambio ha sido vertiginoso y es una apuesta segura. Existe una convivencia buenísima con jugadoras de otras procedencias, que juegan un polo extraordinario y han ayudado mucho a hacer crecer el polo femenino. Tienen las puertas abiertas y hoy en día ya existen una serie de torneos muy interesantes y de gran nivel en Argentina.

¿Veremos como en los próximos años la tecnología tendrá un papel fundamental en el polo? Con sistemas de visionado, rearbitraje, GPS, etc.

Ya se le da mucho uso, desde hace años, al estudio de partidos y el tasticismo. Pero estoy convencido que seguirá creciendo y veremos en práctica sistemas de seguimientos de caballos o jugadores, paravermapasdecalorenlacancha,velocidadesy obtener muchos datos para mejorar la jugabilidad. El uso de la tecnología tiene un gran potencial para seguir haciendo crecer al polo. También eso nos ayuda a ver o contemplar un polo más activo, más rápido y adecuar normativas que mejoren la fluidez del juego y hacerlo más competitivo y veloz. Los cambios son buenos siempre que sean de a poquito, paulatinos y con sentido. Siempre en beneficio.

And are young people following polo?

An increasing number. We can see it in the tournaments that we do for young people in Pilar, over 70/90 of them gather, young people who intensely enjoy polo. The number of young people getting involved in sport is extremely high, it is something special and different in Argentina. Many of them then will follow their own paths and others turn professional, but the passion is very much alive. It is something that is a part of our culture, you see polo pitches all over Argentina. Polo has something special that other sports don’t have. It is a team sport, with friends, families; professionals and amateurs perfectly coexist, it has a healthy and fantastic relationship with entities and companies. They make it something special and unique.

We have enjoyed golden years with players who will be the history of this sport, but we can see that another new high quality generation is pushing on. The future is now present on the pitch…

Polo continues to surprise us. I was lucky to see and play alongside different eras and groups of players. Today, fortunately, we can see how the generational change of big names is ensured and how names such as Poroto Cambiaso, the Castagnola siblings, the Panelo family, Chavanne, Lauhlé, etc are carving out a place for themselves. Estamos a unos pocos días de encarar tu primera Triple Corona como presidente de la asociación, ¿qué novedades preparan?

En la parte deportiva no habrá cambios sustanciales. Hurlingham y Tortugas los jugarán los 8 equipos clasificados y al Abierto se sumarán los dos equipos de la Clasificación. Igualmente, me gustaría poner en valor la Copa de la Cámara; se trata de un torneo de grandísimo nivel, con 20 equipos nivel; estoy convencido de que vamos a disfrutar de una gran temporada. Y en cuanto a Palermo, sí se podrán apreciar algunas mejores, como la preparación de un espacio en la zona de ‘Patio de comidas’ para gente de polo, patrones, profesionales, antiguos jugadores del Abierto, etc. También mantendremos la zona comercial y de ocio para que todos puedan disfrutar de este gran espectáculo.

And what about the growth of women’s polo? It has grown impressively. There were few players and projection up to 10/15 years ago; something that was beginning to happen in Europe, the United States, and other parts of the world. At present, the change has been dizzying and it is a safe bet. There is really good social harmony with players from other regions, who play extraordinary polo and they have really helped to make women’s polo grow. The doors are open and at present there are a series of very interesting and high level tournaments in Argentina.

Over the coming years will we see technology having a key role in polo? With viewing systems, referee review systems, GPS, etc.

It has already been used a lot, for years, to study matches and tactics. However, I am convinced thatitwillcontinuetogrowandwewillseehorseor player tracking systems in practice, in order to see heat maps on the pitch, speeds, and obtain lots of data to improve playability. The use of technology has great potential to continue to make polo grow. That also helps us to see or watch more active, quicker polo and to adapt rules to improve the fluidity of play and make it more competitive and faster. Changes are always good provided that they are bit by bit, gradual, and meaningful. Always for the good.

We are a few days away from you tackling your first Triple Crown as president of the association, what new developments are you preparing?

In terms of sport, there will be no substantial changes. Hurlingham and Tortugas will be played by the 8 qualified teams and the two teams from the Qualifiers will be added to the Open. Likewise, I would like to showcase the Copa de la Cámara; it is a very high level tournament, with 20 teams; I am convinced that we are going to enjoy a great season. And with regard to Palermo, there will be some improvements, such as the preparation of a space in the “Food courtyard” for polo people, patrons, professionals, former Open players, etc. We will also keep the shopping and leisure area so that everyone can enjoy this great spectacle.

¿Qué le parece cómo se arma la temporada en Sotogrande?

Sotogrande tiene un bagaje, una trayectoria y décadas de experiencia y esencia en el mundo del polo. Eso no se consigue de un día para otro, es una semilla y un trabajo de más de hace 60 años. Yo lo conocí hace 37 años y es increíble ver lo que ha crecido, es una cosa impresiónate y el polo es protagonista en mucho. Ves el gran trabajo de los Zobel, de los Mora-Figueroa y mucha gente que han contribuido a ello. A eso le sumas que un lugar increíble, con sitios turísticos, gastronomía, playas, clima y ves que lo tiene todo para ser un lugar único para disfrutar del polo de manera especial.

Para acabar, ¿te has marcado un objetivo o meta en tu presidencia?

La máxima siempre es crecer y mejorar, obvio. Por supuesto para consolidar el gran nivel que hay ahora mismo, fortalecerlo, y comenzar a caminar hacia la dirección que entendemos, debe estar todo coordinado. Entre mis grandes propuestas está la de asegurar Palermo, a nivel organizativo, como la catedral del polo por muchísimos años. Es fundamental dejar consolidados los mimbres de su futuro y que institucionalmente cuente con ese respaldo y tranquilidad. Sellar de la mano de las autoridades ese reconocimiento y fortalecer que durante la temporada de máximo nivel todo el mundo quiera venir a disfrutar del polo en Palermo; contar con la proyección y dimensión, a todos los niveles que ello debe tener.

How do you think the season is looking in Sotogrande?

Sotogrande has baggage, a background and decades of experience and essence in the world of polo. That isn’t achieved overnight, it is a seed and work that has been done for over 60 years. I discovered it 37 years ago and it is incredible to see how it has grown, it is impressive and polo takes centre stage in lots of things. You see the great work by the Zobel family, the Mora-Figueroa family and lots of people have contributed to that. In addition to that you have an incredible place, with tourist spots, gastronomy, beaches, the climate and you see that it has everything to be a unique place to enjoy polo in a special way.

To finish, have you set yourself an objective or goal in your presidency?

The aim is always to grow and improve, obviously. Of course, we want to consolidate the great level thereisrightnow,strengthenit,andbeginwalking in the direction that we believe that everything should coordinated towards. My big proposals include ensuring Palermo, at an organisational level, as the cathedral of polo for many years to come. It is essential to consolidate the foundations of its future and ensure that institutionally it has the backing and peace of mind. Ensuring with the authorities is about recognition and strengthening to ensure that during the peak season everyone who wants to can come and enjoy polo in Palermo; having the projection and size, that it should have at all levels.

However, the 2025 edition won’t be like the others: it will be the one with the perfect team. It will be the most eagerly-awaited cross of generations. Above all, it will be the historic partnership between Cambiaso and Castagnola.

A TEAM TO BE REMEMBERED

For years, the Cambiaso and Castagnola families competed on rival teams, even starring in the most memorable finals of the last five years. However, 2025 will mark the birth of a new paradigm: Adolfo Cambiaso (10), his son “Poroto” Cambiaso (10), Camilo “Jeta” Castagnola (10) and Bartolomé Castagnola (h.) (10) will form a 40 goal team, the maximum possible handicap.

Cada año, cuando septiembre se acerca, todas las miradas se dirigen a Buenos Aires, donde comienza la Triple Corona, el circuito de élite que combina los torneos de Tortugas, Hurlingham y el Abierto Argentino de Palermo. The impact was immediate: never before had so much talent and so much family history been brought together in a single team. La Dolfina and La Natividad, previously rivals, now merge in a fearsome black, an unquestionable candidate to take home the Triple Crown.

Adolfo Cambiaso, the holder of 17 Palermo Opens, is adding a new initiative to his legacy. “Poroto” is the present and future of global polo. Jeta Castagnola, winner in Palermo in 2021, is now one of the players on the circuit who most destabilises rival teams. La presencia de Sainz de Vicuña es también un símbolo: el polo argentino sigue siendo la referencia global, pero ya no es un universo cerrado. Europa, y en especial Sotogrande, se vuelve cada vez más un vivero de talentos que se prueban en las grandes ligas.

In addition to the eight teams that qualified directly, the qualification for Palermo offers another exciting narrative. In September, ten teams will battle it out for two spots at the Argentine Open. They notably include La Zeta–Kazak, combining David Stirling and Nicolás Pieres, and La Dolfina II, the training school that continues to produce high level players.

However, all eyes will also be on La Esquina, a team that features Pascual Sainz de Vicuña, the young Spaniard who continues to make history for polo in his country. Brought up among tournaments in Sotogrande, Pascual represents the natural bridge between Europe and Argentina. His growth has been followed closely by this newspaper, where each summer we watch him compete in the Sotogrande International Tournament. Now, with 6 handicap goals, and notable maturity, he is aiming to etch his name on the world’s most prestigious stage.

La campaña Risk All nace para celebrar un reconocimiento histórico: ser elegidos Mejor Viñedo del Mundo 2024 por los World’s Best Vineyards, un título que premia no solo la calidad de la bodega, sino su propuesta cultural, sensorial y arquitectónica. 1862 – Una revolución enológica en el Médoc Alavés

Cuando Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga trajo a Rioja las técnicas bordelesas de la mano del enólogo Jean Pineau, sembró las raíces de una revolución. Nacía el proyecto del Médoc Alavés, y con él, una nueva forma de entender el vino español.

1888–1895 – Una mujer al frente y un diploma inolvidable

Juana Zavala, esposa del marqués, asumió las riendas de la bodega tras la pérdida de su marido. Bajo su dirección, Marqués de Riscal obtuvo en 1895 el Diploma de Honor en la Exposición de Burdeos, el mayor galardón concedidohastaentoncesaunvinonofrancés.

1999–2006 – Gehry y el vino como arquitectura emocional

La Ciudad del Vino, inaugurada en 2006 con el Hotel Marqués de Riscal como estandarte, supuso la fusión definitiva entre tradición vitivinícola y vanguardia creativa. Gehry, autor del Guggenheim de Bilbao, regaló al vino un nuevo lenguaje: monumental, sinuoso, inolvidable.

The Risk All campaign was created to celebrate an historic distinction: being named the World’s Best Vineyard 2024 by the World’s Best Vineyards, a title that not only awards the quality of the winery, but also its cultural, sensory, and architectural proposal. THREE MILESTONES, THREE ACTS OF BRAVERY

1862 – A winemaking revolution in the Médoc Alavés region

When Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga brought Bordeaux techniques to La Rioja with the oenologist Jean Pineau, he sowed the seeds of a revolution. The Médoc Alavés project was born, and with it, a new way of understanding Spanish wine.

1888–1895 – A woman in charge and an unforgettable diploma

Juana Zavala, wife of the marquis, took over the reins of the winery after losing her husband. Under her management, Marqués de Riscal obtained the Diploma of Honour at the Bordeaux Exhibition in 1895, the greatest award given at the time to a non-French wine.

1999–2006 – Gehry and wine as emotional architecture

The City of Wine, opened in 2006 with Hotel Marqués de Riscal as its hallmark, marked the definitive merging of winemaking tradition and the creative cutting-edge. Gehry, creator of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, gave wine a new language: monumental, winding, unforgettable.

Ferreira, expublicista convertida en maestra heladera, ha hecho de su obrador en un callejón blanco de Tarifa un laboratorio de alta creatividad comestible.

Entre sus sabores más celebrados se encuentra “Cuba”, una mezcla envolvente de chocolate São Tomé 70 %, jengibre confitado, naranja amarga y ron añejo de caña. Y especialmente “MentaSpicata”, inspirado en el icónico rebujito andaluz, con hierbabuena fresca, vino fino Manzanilla y virutas de chocolate fondant, que le valió el primer premio nacional del Gelato Festival World Masters en 2022. Cada elaboración de Ferreira se produce sin aditivos, con materias primas seleccionadas y rotación diaria: filosofía slow en estado puro.

However, the most pleasant surprise for Campo de Gibraltar palates comes from Tarifa, where the little ice cream parlour La Casa del Gelato, run by Carolina Ferreira, was included in the select global ranking, in 85th place. Ferreira, a former publicist turned master ice cream maker, has turned her workshop on a white alley in Tarifa into a laboratory of highly edible creativity.

It should be highlighted that the Zóbel family, which came from the Philippines, was one of the founders of the resort. Enrique Zóbel regularly played polo. Furthermore, he was a true enthusiast of this sport. Also, and

Durante muchos años, el polo en Sotogrande se jugaba a orillas del mar. Aquellas canchas, situadas junto al club de playa el Cucurucho ( hoy Trocadero Sotogrande) eran, sin discusión, el punto de encuentro de las tardes de verano en Sotogrande.

Los caballos se guardaban entonces en las cuadras cerca del Hotel Sotogrande. Formaba parte de la vida diaria el ver cómo llevaban y traían los caballos a través de la urbanización. El campo de polo quedaba pegado a la arena misma y eso hacía que mucha gente disfrutase de los partidos en bañador. Además, los caballos se bañaban en la playa al terminar los partidos para refrescarse tras una intensa jornada de polo.

Tras los primeros torneos familiares, en 1971 se celebró la primera edición de la Copa de Oro Sotogrande, instituida por Joseph McMicking. Un torneo inaugural que levantaría y quedaría para la historia el conjunto de Casarejo Portales, formado por: Pedro Domecq de la Riva, Mariano Olazábal, Antonio Herrera y ‘Tito’ Gómez, superando en la final al equipo de Sotogrande, en el que ya figuraba un jovencísimo Ramón Mora-Figueroa.

probably due to the entrepreneurial tradition of his family, he had a character that drove him to promote different initiatives. For many years, polo in Sotogrande was played on the seashore. Those pitches, located next to the Cucurucho beach club (currently Trocadero Sotogrande) were, unquestionably, the gathering point on summer evenings in Sotogrande.

Back then, horses were kept at stables close to Hotel Sotogrande. It was part of daily life to watch how horses were brought and taken through the resort. The polo pitch was right by the sand and that meant that many people enjoyed the matches in their swimwear. Also, horses bathed in the sea at the end of matches to cool down after an intense day of polo.

After the first family tournaments, the first edition of the Sotogrande Gold Cup, established by Joseph McMicking was held in 1971. An opening tournament to go down in history that was son by the Casarejo Portales team, formed by: Pedro Domecq de la Riva, Mariano Olazábal, Antonio Herrera and ‘Tito’ Gómez, beating the Sotogrande team in the final, which featured a very young Ramón Mora-Figueroa.

De aquella primera final, Tito Mariano, recordaba emocionado en una entrevista concedida hace algunos años a esta misma publicación, entonces llamada La Bocha, que “más de 600 personas acudieron a presenciar el partido en la cancha de la playa, incluso se llegaron a mandar invitaciones hasta a Inglaterra o Alemania”. Explicaba también, como anécdota de aquel mítico encuentro, que Pedro Domecq de la Riva, que por entonces estaba prestando el servicio militar, “se quejó de una fisura en el brazo cuando nos clasificamos para la semifinal, con el objetivo que le permitieran salir. Por ello llevaba el brazo izquierdo escayolado, dejando la mano libre para poder agarrar las riendas, ya que según él, lo vigilaban para comprobar que estaba lesionado”, comentaba.

Ya en aquella época, ilustres apellidos como Parladé, Prado, Berazadi, Melián, Vallejo Nágera, Aguirre, Asis o Gabriel ya se arrimaban a ese ilusionante comienzo del polo en Sotogrande. Unos inicios que acabarían desembarcando en un gran torneo internacional, al que cada año acuden cientos de jugadores y caballos de todos los continentes y alguna de las organizaciones de polo más destacadas del mundo.

En 1973 se celebró la primera edición de Copa de Plata, cuyo vencedor fue el equipo de Sotogrande y al año siguiente se inauguraba la cancha de polo de Paniagua. Un fuerte temporal y crecida de agua se lleva por delante lacanchadelaplayaen1984ymesesmástardeseiniciaría la construcción de las canchas de Río, que entre 1985 y 1986 tomaron el relevo de Paniagua y se convertirían durante años en la sede central de los torneos de polo en la urbanización. Mencionar también que la edición de 1989 quedará marcada en el histórico por su obligada suspensión a causa de la peste equina.

El inicio de la década de los 90 impulsaría una mayor profesionalización del Torneo Verano, así como de las diferentes copas, con el aterrizaje de grandes organizaciones y patrones internacionales de gran prestigio, así como el apoyo y patrocinio de importantes marcas comerciales. En 1998 participaron por primera vez más de 1.000 caballos en el torneo, un paso hacia delante que puso en marcha un crecimiento exponencial año tras año, edición tras edición, que iría aumentando por encima de la treintena los equipos profesionales participantes torneo cada verano en Sotogrande.

A few years ago, in an interview given to this publication, then named La Bocha, Tito Mariano was emotional when recalling that “over 600 people came to watch the match on the beach pitch, and invitations were even sent to England and Germany.” As an anecdote of that legendary match, he also explained that Pedro Domecq de la Riva, who was then undertaking military service “complained of a fracture in his arm when we qualified for the semi-finals, in order to be given permission to go on leave. The start of the 90’s would encourage greater professionalization of the Summer Tournament, as well as different cups, with the arrival of major organisations and highly prestigious international patrons, as well as the support and sponsorship of important commercial brands. In 1998, over 1,000 horses participated in the tournament, a step forward that launched exponential growth that year after year, edition after edition, would increase to over thirty professional teams participating in the tournament each summer in Sotogrande.

Ten years later, in 2008, the definitive leap at a quantitative and qualitative level came with the opening of the Los Pinos area at Santa María Polo Club. The great explosion of polo at all levels in Sotogrande, in terms of professionalization, consumption, attendees, spaces, pitches, teams, and much more. An incredible journey that for some seasons now, has once again been taken over by the Zobel family, with Paola as president of Ayala Polo Club, the current organiser of the International Tournament.

An exciting journey that is now spreading with a strong international image as a high quality and maximum excellence equestrian polo destination, thanks to facilities and institutions such as Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo, Ayala Polo Club and the Los Pinos space, with Santa María Polo Club.

Hay lugares en el mundo que son diferentes, destinos que se con ciben de una manera singular y que te marcan de una manera honda. Incluso como decía aquello tan bonito de Saramago: uno es de dónde lo esperan. Por eso Sotogrande es único, por todas esas cosas perceptibles e intangibles, pero también, por supuesto, por el polo, algo que lo eleva y lo convierte en un lugar especial. Forma parte de su cultura, de su forma de entender la vida y de su historia. Un viaje que lo ha convertido en uno de los destinos de referencia mundial de este deporte y una visita casi obligada, cada agosto, de los mejores jugadores y organizaciones del mundo. La primera vez que descubrí este lugar fue hace más de dos dé cadas, sería allá por 2004 la primera vez que vinimos para tratar de ayudar e impulsar el polo acá, con mayor visibilidad y promoción. Fue para la temporada de primavera y esos fantásticos memoriales que anteceden al verano, entonces Pololine sólo llevaba unas pocas campañas de andadura. Ahí se produjo el flechazo. Al poco tiempo comenzamos también a venir y dar proyección al Torneo Internacional de Verano; y quitando un breve paréntesis, sumamos ya más de 12/13 temporadas de manera ininterrumpida. Tanto se metió Sotogrande y su polo en mí o yo en él, que incluso, por esas cosas bellas que guarda la vida, este rincón ha acabado por convertirse en mi casa desde hace unos pocos años. Me enamoré como a tantos le ha pasado. Porque Sotogrande es distinto y está en constante evolución. De las primeras veces a ahora, ha tenido un crecimiento exponencial en dimensión, en servicios, infraestructuras y lo más importante, en conexiones con diferentes destinos europeos y procedencias. Algo clave para el desarrollo del polo y su industria, estar bien comunicada en transportes. Es un lugar maravilloso al que llegar y disfrutar de su gente, buen tiempo, gastronomía y todo lo que ofrece durante todo el año. Polo y golf, un tándem perfecto. Pero también se lo ha ganado a pulso y por méritos propios. Durante décadas siempre presumieron en Inglaterra de contar con las mejores canchas del mundo; en mi opinión, Sotogrande hace rato que marca la tendencia y es lugar perfecto en el que jugar todo el año. Patrones, jugadores, organizaciones hablan desde hace años de las canchas de Sotogrande como la referencia y es sinónimo de esa apuesta por la calidad. Y por supuesto, de la gran profesionalización y trato en la organización de torneos. Pude conocer muchos lugares y estoy convencido que es difícil encontrar algo que pueda reunir tanto. Obvio que siempre se puede mejorar y buscar formas de crecer. Sería un punto interesante dotar de notoriedad con más meses antelación los equipos componentes de la temporada, eso le daría aún más exposición y proyección, además de incentivar el efecto llamada para que se sumen más equipos. Sotogrande tiene capacidad, estructura y potencial para contar con una temporada aún más grande y fuerte. Es muy positivo que quede aún camino por recorrer y es un reto para toda su organización seguir buscando esa excelencia. Para Ayala Polo, Minuto 7 y todos los que quedan por formar parte de la historia del polo en Sotogrande. Y eso es lo bonito de este viaje, contemplar que el polo continúa con la llama muy viva. Para ello también ha sido y es fundamental respaldo de grandes familias unidas al polo, durante un tiempo los Mora-Figueroa, y antes y ahora los Zobel. Siempre dieron ese empuje necesario parar consolidar y hacer más fuerte el polo, el destino y su evolución. Ahora toca disfrutar de esta fantástica temporada, con 20 equipos, tan fuerte y competitiva, y sigamos viviendo este bonito viaje a través del mundo con la brújula puesta en Sotogrande gracias al polo.

There are places in the world that are different, destinations that are conceived in a unique way and that leave a deep impression on you. As Saramago so beautifully put it: you belong where you are expected. That is why Sotogrande is unique, for all those tangible and intangible things, but also, of course, for polo, something that elevates it and makes it a special place. It is part of its culture, its way of understanding life and its history. A journey that has made it one of the world’s leading destinations for this sport and an almost obligatory visit every August for the world’s best players and organisations.

I first discovered this place more than two decades ago. It was back in 2004 when we first came here to try to help and promote polo, with greater visibility and publicity. It was for the spring season and those fantastic memorials that precede the summer, and Pololine had only been running for a few seasons. That’s when I fell in love with it. Soon after, we also began to come and promote the International Summer Tournament; and apart from a brief hiatus, we have now been here for more than 12/13 seasons without interruption. Sotogrande and its polo became so ingrained in me, or I in it, that, thanks to one of those beautiful things that life has in store, this corner of the world has become my home for the last few years. I fell in love, as so many others have.

Because Sotogrande is different and constantly evolving. From the early days to now, it has grown exponentially in size, services, infrastructure and, most importantly, connections with different European destinations and origins. Good transport links are key to the development of polo and its industry. It is a wonderful place to visit and enjoy its people, good weather, gastronomy and everything it has to offer throughout the year. Polo and golf, a perfect combination.

But it has also earned this reputation through its own merits. For decades, England boasted of having the best courses in the world; in my opinion, Sotogrande has long been setting the trend and is the perfect place to play all year round. Skippers, players and organisations have been talking about the Sotogrande courses as the benchmark for years, and it is synonymous with that commitment to quality. And, of course, with the high level of professionalism and service in the organisation of tournaments. I have been to many places and I am convinced that it is difficult to find anything that can offer so much.

Obviously, there is always room for improvement and ways to grow. It would be interesting to publicise the teams participating in the season several months in advance, as this would give it even more exposure and visibility, as well as encouraging more teams to join. Sotogrande has the capacity, structure and potential for an even bigger and stronger season. It is very positive that there is still a long way to go, and it is a challenge for the entire organisation to continue striving for excellence. For Ayala Polo, Minuto 7 and all those who will be part of the history of polo in Sotogrande.

And that is the beauty of this journey, seeing that polo continues to burn brightly. To this end, the support of great families linked to polo has also been and continues to be fundamental, for a time the Mora-Figueroa family, and before and now the Zobel family. They have always provided the necessary impetus to consolidate and strengthen polo, its destiny and its evolution.
