August must not prevent us from seeing the bigger picture

El mes de agosto suele dejar cifras que invitan al optimismo: ocupación hotelera cercana al lleno, gran dinamismo en la hostelería, intensa actividad deportiva y una agenda social que consolida a Sotogrande como un destino de referencia internacional. Pero sería un error convertir estos datos en un manto bajo el que esconder las carencias estructurales que siguen afectando a nuestra zona. Porque la realidad es que Sotogrande y su entorno inmediato, especialmente Torreguadiaro, afrontan problemas que se agravan con la llegada masiva de visitantes. El estacionamiento, por ejemplo, se convierte en una tarea casi imposible durante las semanas centrales del verano, generando malestar entre residentes y turistas. Lo mismo ocurre con los accesos: la entrada a Torreguadiaro desde la autovía se convierte en un punto negro de colapsos diarios, con retenciones que contrastan con la imagen de comodidad y exclusividad que se quiere proyectar. A estas deficiencias se suma la necesidad urgente de mejorar los servicios sanitarios y de atención médica, insuficientes para una población que en temporada alta se multiplica. El crecimiento de Sotogrande y de las urbanizaciones vecinas hace imprescindible un refuerzo real de la infraestructura sanitaria, no solo en número de profesionales, sino también en instalaciones y recursos. La apertura del nuevo edificio público de Torreguadiaro representa un paso adelante en la dotación de equipamientos para los vecinos, un espacio que, bien gestionado, puede convertirse en un punto de encuentro y en un motor de dinamización cultural y social. Pero este avance sigue bloqueado, por temas de cuestión de suministro eléctrico y tampoco avanza al nivel que debería. Como la pasarela que conecte sobre el río Guadiaro y San Enrique o la ejecución del segundo tramo del paseo marítimo en Torreguadiaro. Sotogrande y su entorno no puede permitirse vivir únicamente del éxito de agosto. Si de verdad queremos consolidarnos como destino de excelencia, el próximo reto es claro: mejorar las infraestructuras, garantizar servicios de calidad y planificar con ambición el futuro. Solo así se podrá sostener el prestigio que hoy disfrutamos.

The month of August usually gives us figures that inspire optimism: hotel occupancy close to full, a dynamic hospitality industry, intense sporting activity and a social calendar that consolidates Sotogrande as a leading international destination. But it would be a mistake to turn this data into a blanket under which to hide the structural deficiencies that continue to affect our area. Because the reality is that Sotogrande and its immediate surroundings, especially Torreguadiaro, face problems that are aggravated by the mass influx of visitors. Parking, for example, becomes an almost impossible task at the height of summer, leading to unrest between residents and tourists. The same goes for the access points: the entrance to Torreguadiaro from the dual carriageway becomes a black spot of daily traffic jams, with hold-ups that conflict with the image of convenience and exclusivity that we want to present. These shortcomings are compounded by the urgent need to improve health and medical services, which are inadequate for a population that multiplies in peak season. With the growth of Sotogrande and its neighbouring developments, it is essential that health infrastructure is properly strengthened, not just in the number of professionals, but also in terms of facilities and resources. The opening of the new public building in Torreguadiaro is a step forward in the provision of facilities for residents as a space that, if it is well managed, can become a meeting point and driver of cultural and social outreach. But this development remains hindered by power supply issues and is not advancing at the required standard. Much like the walkway that connects Guadiaro and San Enrique over the river, or the construction of the second section of the promenade in Torreguadiaro. Sotogrande and its surrounding area cannot afford to live solely from the success of August. If we really want to consolidate ourselves as a destination par excellence, the next challenge is clear: to improve infrastructures, ensure quality services and plan for the future with ambition. Only then will we maintain the prestige that we enjoy today.

Un gran plan de seguridad para un destino de alta calidad

A great public safety plan for a high-quality destination

Los últimos acontecimientos climatológicos, sumados a los incendios forestales que han golpeado a distintos puntos de nuestra geografía en los últimos meses/ años, nos obligan a reflexionar con serenidad, pero también con determinación, sobre el presente y el futuro de nuestra comunidad. Sotogrande, por su localización y características, no es ajena a estos riesgos. Al contrario: la riqueza natural que nos rodea —con más de 6.000 árboles dentro de la propia urbanización—, se convierte en un tesoro que debemos preservar, pero también en una responsabilidad compartida. Es justo reconocer que Sotogrande está dotada, gracias a la implicación de diferentes entidades y administraciones, de recursos para la prevención y actuación en casos de emergencia. Contamos con protocolos, con brigadas de apoyo y con una coordinación cada vez más estrecha entre instituciones públicas y privadas. Sin embargo, creo firmemente que el próximo gran paso para consolidar a Sotogrande como un destino residencial y turístico de la más alta calidad pasa por la elaboración y presentación de un gran plan integral de seguridad que transmita a toda la comunidad, precisamente, esa sensación de control y seguridad que los que estamos más cerca de estas instituciones conocemos pero que de cara al residente, no siempre tan conectado y cercano a estos temas, agradecería conocer. Un plan de este calado no debería limitarse a enumerar los medios disponibles. Debería ser una estrategia ambiciosa, visible y comprensible para todos los residentes, visitantes y potenciales inversores. Un documento que detalle de forma clara los recursos materiales y humanos con los que contamos, los planes alternativos de actuación en casos de incendio o fenómenos extremos, las rutas de evacuación previstas y los protocolos de comunicación inmediata para garantizar una respuesta rápida y eficaz. Transmitir seguridad no es solamente reaccionar ante una emergencia; es también demostrar que se ha pensado en todos los escenarios posibles y que existen soluciones ensayadas para cada uno de ellos. En un enclave que se presenta al mundo como referente de calidad de vida, deporte y naturaleza, la seguridad debe formar parte esencial de ese sello distintivo. Sotogrande merece que, de cara al próximo año, podamos mostrar con orgullo no solo nuestros paisajes, nuestras instalaciones deportivas y nuestra oferta cultural, sino también un modelo ejemplar de gestión preventiva frente a las emergencias. Eso reforzará la confianza de quienes nos visitan y, sobre todo, dará tranquilidad a quienes han elegido —o elegirán— hacer de Sotogrande su hogar. La excelencia no se mide únicamente en belleza o en servicios de lujo. La verdadera excelencia se demuestra en la capacidad de cuidar y proteger lo que tenemos. Y ese debe ser nuestro compromiso colectivo.

The latest weather events, coupled with the forest fires that have hit various parts of our geography in recent months/years, force us to reflect calmly, but also with determination, on the present and future of our community. Sotogrande, due to its location and characteristics, is no stranger to these risks. In fact, the natural wealth around us – with more than 6,000 trees within the resort itself – is a treasure that we must preserve, but also a shared responsibility. It’s right to acknowledge that Sotogrande, thanks to the involvement of various organisations and authorities, is equipped with resources for prevention and action in emergencies. We have protocols, support teams, and increasingly close coordination between public and private institutions. However, I firmly believe that the next big step to consolidate Sotogrande as a residential and tourist destination of the highest quality involves developing and introducing a comprehensive public safety plan that transmits to the whole community that feeling of control and safety that those of us who are closest to these institutions know but which residents, who are not always so aware of these issues, would appreciate knowing. Such a plan should not be limited to listing the available means. It should be an ambitious, clear and visible strategy for all residents, visitors and potential investors. A document that clearly sets out the details of the material and human resources that we have, the alternative action plans in the event of fires or extreme phenomena, the planned evacuation routes and the immediate communication protocols to ensure a rapid and effective response. Transmitting a sense of safety is not just about reacting to an emergency – it is also about showing that every scenario has been considered and that there are tested solutions for each of them. At a destination that presents itself to the world as a benchmark for quality of life, sport and nature, safety must be an essential part of its hallmark. Heading into the next year, Sotogrande must be able to show with pride not only our scenery, sports facilities and cultural programme, but also an exemplary model for preventative management for emergencies. This will strengthen the trust of those who visit us and, above all, give peace of mind to those who have chosen – or will choose – to make Sotogrande their home. Excellence is not measured solely in beauty or luxury services. True excellence is demonstrated in our ability to care for and protect what we have. And that must be our collective commitment.

The average cost of luxury stays reached €500 above 2024 levels, an increase of 23.5% compared to previous years.

Data, figures and experiences that add up to another summer of positive numbers for luxury tourism in Sotogrande and its surrounding area. This summer of 2025, Sotogrande reconfigured its positioning as a strategic destination for luxury tourism, boosted by a wave of important figures that reflect optimism, quality and consolidation. Expectations in Andalusia – with revenue forecasts of 9 billion euros, 3.1% more than in 2024 – have been easily met. Having children is one of those experiences that transcends any logic or manual for life. You learn that your time is not just yours, that your patience can multiply, that your priorities can shift without asking permission. In a way, children are the most authentic opportunity to experience unconditional love. It’s funny: we often think it’s we who teach our children, but the truth is that they teach us much more. They bring us back to the essence of life: authenticity, curiosity, vulnerability and the ability to love without conditions. There may not be a word that’s enough to describe what being a parent means. It’s tiredness and joy, worry and hope, chaos and order. But, above all, it’s meaning. Children remind us that living is not just about surviving, but transcending. And that’s a lesson that no machine could program.

Sotogrande fortalece su tendencia alcista en el mercado inmobiliario de lujo •

La inversión total en el segmento prime alcanzó durante el pasado ejercicio los 3.200 millones de euros, con una subida superior al 20 % frente al año anterior.

La tendencia positiva se mantiene en 2025. Solo en los primeros meses del año, los precios han registrado un alza superior al 14 % interanual.

El mercado inmobiliario de lujo en Sotogrande y la Costa del Sol atraviesa la primera mitad del año 2025 con cifras que consolidan a la región como uno de los destinos residenciales más atractivos de Europa. La combinación de clima, calidad de vida, infraestructuras y seguridad ha convertido a la zona en un auténtico polo de inversión, tanto para compradores nacionales como internacionales. Durante 2024, las ventas de viviendas de alto nivel en la Costa del Sol superaron las 8.700 operaciones, lo que supuso un incremento cercano al 6 % respecto al año anterior. La inversión total en el segmento prime alcanzó los 3.200 millones de euros, con una subida superior al 20 % frente al ejercicio anterior. Este dinamismo se traslada también a Sotogrande, donde la escasez de producto disponible ha impulsado tanto la demanda como los precios en los segmentos más exclusivos. Las viviendas ‘premium’, con precios superiores a los tres millones de euros, alcanzaron

Cada vez más proyectos incorporan eficiencia energética, domótica, diseño bioclimático y espacios de bienestar, lo que responde a la demanda de un comprador más joven y concienciado con el medio ambiente. The positive trend continues in 2025. In the first few months of the year alone, prices have risen by more than 14% year-on-year.

The luxury real estate market in Sotogrande and the Costa del Sol is halfway through 2025 with figures that consolidate the region as one of the most attractive residential destinations in Europe. The combination of climate, quality of life, infrastructure, and security has made the area a real investment hub for both domestic and international buyers. During 2024, sales of high-end homes on the Costa del Sol exceeded 8,700 transactions, representing an increase of close to 6% over the previous year. Total investment in the prime segment reached €3.2 billion, an increase of more than 20% over the previous year. This dynamism also extends to Sotogrande, where the scarcity of available product has driven both demand and prices in the most exclusive segments. Premium homes, with prices above €3 million, reached an average value of €5.3 million in 2024. Sotogrande vive una jornada solidaria con Charity Paddle Surf Race •

Paddle solidario en The Beach, La Reserva Golf, con un centenar de participantes y familiares en un día de diversión y de apoyo a la Asociación de Tiles.

La Charity Paddle Surf Race ha llenado de energía y entusiasmo las aguas de The Beach – La Reserva Club, con un evento que tenía como objetivo recaudar fondos a favor de la Asociación de Tiles, desde 2015 promueve la inclusión de las personas con discapacidad a través del deporte. El ambiente festivo comenzó desde primera hora de la mañana con la llegada de los participantes, que acudieron a remar juntos por una buena causa. Tras la entrega de dorsales y la charla técnica, las tablas empezaron a deslizarse por el agua en un recorrido de 500 metros ida y vuelta que puso a prueba tanto a principiantes como a deportistas más experimentados. “Eventos como este reflejan la verdadera esencia de Sotogrande: unir deporte, naturaleza y comunidad con un propósito que va mucho más allá de la competición. Nuestro compromiso con las personas

con discapacidad es firme, pero también extendemos nuestra responsabilidad a otras causas sociales y ambientales que forman parte del ADN de Sotogrande y de nuestro calendario de iniciativas sostenibles”, destacó Rita Jordao, directora de marketing de Sotogrande, durante la clausura de la jornada. The Charity Paddle Surf Race filled the waters of The Beach – La Reserva Club with energy and enthusiasm, with an event that aimed to raise funds for the Tiles Association, which has been promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities through sport since 2015. The festive atmosphere began early in the morning with the arrival of the participants, who came to paddle together for a good cause. After the distribution of race numbers and a technical briefing, the boards began to glide through the water on a 500-meter round trip that tested both beginners and more experienced athletes. “Events like this reflect the true essence of Sotogrande: bringing together sport, nature, and commu-

Cartas al director Estimado director, Es un placer poder transmitir mis inquietudes en este espacio dirigido a todos los lectores del Periódico de Sotogrande. Su director me ha otorgado este privilegio. Espero no defraudar. Soy una persona asidua a visitar este gran lugar, único en Europa, disfrutando de todas sus ventajas cerca de 30 años. Son muchos años viendo el enorme desarrollo que ha tenido nuestra gran Urbanización, años de bonanza, años de crisis y años de gran evolución. Sotogrande ha estado evolucionando de forma positiva en muchos aspectos desde los grandes desarrollos inmobiliarios, mejoras en los servicios, líder en eventos deportivos como el golf, el polo, pero también hay muchos aspectos que se deben mejorar y que hoy me han dado la oportunidad de poderlos comentar. Desgraciadamente no dispongo de espacio para poderlos dar a conocer todos y cada uno de ellos por eso me voy a ceñir en el problema del Trafico que está generando grandes problemas en la circulación y a los residentes de la zona de La Marina. Desconozco lo que ocurre en los alrededores de nuestra Urbanización como es Pueblo Nuevo, Guadiaro y Torreguadiaro, áreas que necesitan mejoras, pero no las conozco en profundidad y no puedo entrar de lleno a analizarlas; sin embargo, si me gustaría

dar a conocer la grave problemática del trafico en nuestra Urbanización, fundamentalmente en la zona que va desde la entrada al puerto de Sotogrande hasta el puente del río Guadiaro. Son comentarios personales que, por supuesto, no coincidirán con los puntos de vista de muchos lectores, pero si consigo que muchos de Uds. tomen conciencia de que necesitamos cambiar en nuestra actitud y en mejorar entonces mi objetivo se habrá visto cumplido. Intento analizar una actualidad que nos preocupa de forma constructiva con el fin de mejorar todo aquello que por falta de medios, falta de decisiones acertadas o por abandono se está convirtiendo en una situación conflictiva. Es lamentable ver como las entradas y salidas a nuestra Urbanización, en las zonas anteriormente mencionadas, se colapsan varios días a la semana, fundamentalmente los Domingos. Se aparca en zonas prohibidas, se ocupan zonas ajardinadas, taponan salidas de garajes privados, ocupan plazas de minusválidos, acceden a zonas peatonales de la Marina sin autorización..... Todos, creo, saben perfectamente cual es el origen de esta situación. Hay muchos lectores de este medio que están dando sus opiniones al respecto y sus posibles soluciones, pero ninguno menciona que la verdadera situación conflictiva la

genera un Mercadillo, en el mercado de Levante, que de forma increíble se lleva a cabo 3 o 4 veces a la Semana fundamentalmente en el periodo estival (Miércoles-Jueves-algún festivo y el Domingo). En todas partes del mundo civilizado los mercadillos suelen hacerse solamente 1 día a la semana, aquí sin embargo, y de forma poco coherente, se hace varias veces a la semana con la intención, creo,

de atraer publico a la zona de La Marina/Mercado de Levante para conseguir generar negocio a los locales comerciales y hostelería sin preocuparles las consecuencias negativas que ello conlleva. Y no hay infraestructura para acoger semejante afluencia de publico donde la mayoría acude con sus vehículos privados sin respetar las mínimas normas de educación y civismo. Y es aquí donde surge el problema. Mientras no tomemos conciencia que tenemos que cambiar con esta actitud será muy difícil conseguir dar con la solución a no ser que las autoridades competentes se decidan de una vez por todas a actuar y a buscar una solución que termine con este caos circulatorio. Todo lo que proponen muchos lectores es muy bonito, en un escenario precioso, romántico, de lujo, pero, ¿realmente alguien cree que esas soluciones algún día se podrán llevar a cabo? ¿Nadie se pregunta por que no se han implementado con la necesidad que hay? Quizás parece que no debe interesar. Hay algunas propuestas de algún lector que se han comentado: Reducción de la Vegetación: Si ningún coche aparcara en la zona ajardinada, restando espacio a los peatones, estos podrían caminar tranquila-

mente. Aparcamiento regulado: Es una buena opción, pero entonces se estaría permitiendo aparcar en esta zona ya de por si muy estrecha y habría entonces que ganar terreno a lo que ahora es una vía para caminar para peatones y bicis. De lo que se pretende es que no haya coches aparcados en esta zona para facilitar el trafico. Un solo sentido: Preciosa idea, pero inviable. ¿donde hacer la vía del otro sentido? Habría que llegar a Gibraltar para rodear todo, hablar con Waze y llegar a tu casa. En definitiva y respetando todas las alternativas que todos con nuestra mejor intención planteamos, desde mi punto de vista de lo que se trata es de intentar eliminar el origen del problema que como he mencionado creo que viene causado por el Mercadillo. Y ¿que alternativas podrían ser efectivas? 1.- La única solución debería pasar por pensar en trasladar el mercadillo del Mercado de Levante fuera de La Marina, a otra zona mas segura y de fácil acceso y con buenas plazas de aparcamiento. ¿El Polo?.Sería una buena decisión, aunque a muchos esta idea no les gustará ya que reduciría la afluencia de publico a la Marina y a su entorno comercial 2.-En caso de no ser posible habría que pensar en mejorar y solucionar lo que ya existe y si es necesario actuando de forma mas disuasoria. -Poner bolardos en toda la vía principal del Paseo de La Marina. Eso impediría el parking y daría mayor fluidez al tráfico. -Una mayor presencia y eficacia policial, sancionando de forma mas seria, no a un par de coches, y poniendo cepos si fuera necesario (entendemos que se carecerá de ellos).Será complicado ante la carencia de efectivos. Pero son necesarios. Pero mientras tanto hay que hablar muy claro: aquí se permite todo. No hay civismo ni educación y el tiempo pasa sin que se vean soluciones . Esto va de mal en peor y no hay toma de conciencia real del problema, con el grave perjuicio de trafico y peligrosidad que esta situación está generando para los residentes en estas zonas y para la imagen de todo Sotogrande. Letters to the director Dear director, It’s a pleasure to be able to convey my concerns in this space for all of El Periódico de Sotogrande’s readers. Its editor has granted me this privilege. I hope not to disappoint. I have been a regular visitor to this great place, unique in Europe, for almost 30 years, enjoying all its advantages. Many years seeing the massive development that our great resort has undergone, years of prosperity, years of crisis and years of much evolution. Sotogrande has been evolving positively in many aspects, from the big real-estate developments, improvements in services, leadership in sporting events such as golf and polo, but there are also many aspects that need to be improved and that today I have been given the opportunity to comment on. Unfortunately I do not have enough space to make each and every one of them known, so I will stick to the major traffic problems affecting circulation and residents of the Marina area. I don’t know what’s happening in the areas surrounding our resort like Pueblo Nuevo, Guadiaro and Torreguadiaro, areas that need improvements, but I don’t know them well and cannot properly analyse them. However, I would like to highlight the serious traffic problems in our resort, primarily in the area that extends from the entrance to Puerto de Sotogrande to the bridge over the Guadiaro River. These are my own comments that, naturally, won’t coincide with the views of many readers, but if I can get a number of you to realise that we need to change our attitude and improve, then my mission will be complete. I will try to analyse a situation that currently concerns us in a constructive way in order to improve everything that, due to a lack of resources, poor decisions or neglect is becoming a conflict situation. It is regrettable to see how the ways in and out of our resort, in the areas mentioned above, are brought to a standstill several days a week, especially Sundays. People park in prohibited areas, occupy landscaped areas, prevent access to private garages, occupy disabled spaces, access pedestrianised areas of the Marina without authorisation . . . Everyone, I think, knows perfectly well what the root cause of this situation is. Many readers of this newspaper are expressing their views on the subject and offering possible solutions, but none mention that the real conflict situation originates in a street market – the Levante Market – which, incredibly, takes place three or four times a week, primarily in the summer period: Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays and some public holidays. In ever part of the civilised world, street markets are usually only held one day a week, but here, in an inconsistent way, it is held several times a week. The intention, I think, is to attract crowds to the Marina/Levante Market area to bring business to shops and hospitality without considering the negative consequences. There is no infrastructure to accommodate such an influx of people, with most arriving in their private vehicles and dispensing with any manners or civility. And this is where the problem stems from. Until we realise that we have to change this attitude, it will be very difficult to find a solution, unless the relevant authorities decide to take action once and for all and find a solution that ends the traffic chaos. Everything that readers have proposed is very nice – it’s a beautiful, romantic, luxurious setting – but does anyone really believe that these solutions will ever be carried out? Does no one wonder why they haven’t been implemented, given the need? Perhaps it’s not of

interest. Some readers have made specific suggestions: Reducing vegetation: If cars didn’t park in the landscaped area, pedestrians would have more space to walk in peace. Regulated parking: It’s a good option, but it would allow parking in this already narrow area and would make it necessary to encroach on what is currently a footpath for pedestrians and cyclists. The aim is to have no parked cars in this area hindering traffic flow. A one-way system: A nice idea, but

unviable. Where would the road in other direction go? You would have to go all the way to Gibraltar to skirt around everything and consult the satnav to get home. In short, and with respect for all the alternatives that all of us suggest with the best intentions, my view is that what we need to do is eliminate the source of the problem, which as I mentioned, is the street market. What alternatives could be effective? 1. The only solution can be to think about moving the Levante street market out of the Marina to another safer

and easily accessible area with good parking. The polo? It would be a good choice, but many wouldn’t like this idea because it would reduce the influx of people to the Marina and local businesses. 2. If this is not possible, we should think about improving and resolving what we already have and, if necessary, act in a more deterrent way. -Put bollards along the main road of the Marina. This would prevent parking and allow traffic to flow. -Greater police presence and effectiveness, more serious penalties, not just a

couple of cars, and using wheel clamps if necessary (we understand there will be a shortage of them). This will difficult given the lack of personnel. But these measures are necessary. In the meantime, we have to be very clear: everything goes here. There’s no civility or manners, and time is going by without seeing any solutions. The situation is going from bad to worse and there is no real awareness of the problem, the serious traffic issues and danger to residents in these areas and damage to all of Sotogrande’s reputation. El derribo de la verja con Gibraltar se proyecta para enero de 2026 A partir de enero próximo, el paisaje que durante más de medio siglo ha definido la entrada y salida de Gibraltar podría cambiar para siempre: la verja que separa el Peñón de España será derribada. La noticia, fruto del acuerdo alcanzado entre Madrid, Londres, Bruselas y Gibraltar, trasciende lo político para convertirse en un hecho histórico con hondas repercusiones en la vida cotidiana del Campo de Gibraltar y, por extensión, en Sotogrande y su entorno. Según todas las fuentes confirmadas en los principales medios internacionales. El anuncio no solo implica la desaparición de un obstáculo real. Supone el final de las colas interminables en verano, de los nervios al calcular cuánto tardará un trabajador en cruzar para llegar puntual a su empleo, o de la incógnita de si los turistas británicos que entran por el aeropuerto de Gibraltar encontrarán trabas para moverse libremente por la Costa del Sol. Desde su cierre en 1969 por orden del régimen franquista, y su reapertura parcial en los ochenta, la verja ha sido el recordatorio constante de un conflicto histórico.

Hoy, más que símbolo de separación, se ha convertido en un lastre para el desarrollo regional. Repercusiones en Sotogrande y la economía local Sotogrande, enclave por excelencia, vive en primera persona la relación directa con Gibraltar. Residientes y vecinos

habituales de toda la vida, extranjeros que vuelan al Peñón para luego instalarse la urbanización, trabajadores que alternan empleos a un lado y otro de la verja, y empresarios que aprovechan el flujo de este vecindad bien entendida en la zona, para la riqueza y crecimiento común, algo que se espera crezca exponencial-

mente en esta nueva etapa inédita. Aunque es cierto que el entusiasmo convive con las dudas. Crece la preocupación por el encarecimiento de la vivienda: cada vez más gibraltareños están adquiriendo propiedades en el Campo de Gibraltar, un fenómeno que podría intensificarse al caer la verja.

La medida también redefine la identidad de la comarca. Para muchos, la verja ya no tenía sentido en pleno siglo XXI, con miles de trabajadores cruzando a diario y con vínculos culturales y sociales cada vez más estrechos. En Sotogrande, donde conviven familias españolas, británicas, gibraltareñas y de múltiples nacionalidades, la noticia se vive como la confirmación de lo que la vida diaria ya había anticipado: que la comarca forma parte de un mismo espacio, interdependiente y abierto al exterior. Si todo sigue el calendario previsto, en enero de 2026 las máquinas comenzarán a derribar la verja. Aquel hierro que durante décadas marcó diferencias pasará a ser chatarra, y en su lugar quedará un paso abierto al futuro. Para el Campo de Gibraltar, y en especial para Sotogrande, se abre aún más un horizonte en el que la movilidad, la economía y las relaciones sociales fluirán con menos trabas. La verja se derriba, pero lo que se levanta es algo más valioso: la posibilidad de imaginar la comarca como un territorio verdaderamente unido, dinámico y europeo.

The news, resulting from the agreement reached between Madrid, London, Brussels and Gibraltar, transcends politics to become a historic event with profound repercussions in the daily life of Campo de Gibraltar and, by extension, Sotogrande and its surrounding area. The measure has been confirmed in all the main international media. The announcement doesn’t just mean the disappearance of a physical obstacle. It means the end of the endless queues in summer, the stress of calculating how long it will take a commuter to cross the border to arrive at work on time, or the uncertainty around whether British tourists arriving at Gibraltar Airport will be prevented from moving freely around the Costa del Sol. Since its closure in 1969 by order of the Franco regime, and its partial reopening in the 1980s, the fence has been a constant reminder of a historical conflict. Today, besides being a symbol of separation, it has hindered regional development.

Este sábado, dos de los equipos más en forma y seguidos de la temporada se ven las caras en el duelo más importante del calendario y con el cetro de Sotogrande y su máximo galardón en pugna y en busca de dueño. La final de la Copa de Oro de Alto Hándicap ya tiene finalistas. La Copa de Plata ya conoce a todos sus ganadores La segunda parada del 54º Torneo Internacional de Polo de Sotogrande, la Copa de Plata Terralpa, ha continuado el alto nivel de polo que se disfrutó con la Copa de Bronce, y al igual que esta competición, se divide en tres categorías de distinto Hándicap: Alto (20-22 goles), Mediano (12-14 goles) y Bajo (6-8 goles).

Entrevista con Tomás Panelo Jugador profesional de Polo - Juega con Black Bears en Sotogrande

“Sotogrande es un sitio de primer nivel para disfrutar y competir” Un placer saludarte y que estés de nuevo por Sotogrande en plena temporada. ¿Un sitio diferente y especial más allá del polo? Totalmente, agosto aquí está muy bueno. El año pasado me quedé en Inglaterra jugando en esta época pero tengo un gran recuerdo por los años anteriores en los que he venido. Es un lugar único para jugar al polo y diferente al resto de sitios a los que viajamos. Personalmente no soy un gran entusiasta del mar pero el destino es increíble. El lugar, la gente, el club, las canchas, lo competitiva que es la temporada, todo está genial. En pocos lugares del mundo tienen una atención de ese nivel a jugadores y patrones. Llegas a la cancha y está todo preparado. Es un sitio de primer nivel para disfrutar y competir. Hablemos de tus inicios y tradición familiar, ¿en qué momento te das cuenta que más allá de una afición el polo podría ser una forma de vida? Con sinceridad, en mi caso nunca hubo plan “b”. En la mesa dónde comemos, con mi familia, entre mis padres, el polo siempre estuvo en el centro de todas las conversaciones. Qué potranca está por nacer, tal o cual yegua anda bien. Ya fuera con más o menos fortuna, con más o menos plata, mi destino sabía que iba a estar ligado al polo. Si no hubiera sido posible como profesional, hubiese estado ligado como criador, manager o petisero, lo que fuese pero cerca del polo. Y ves que vas subiendo nivel… Vas trabajando, día a día, de poquito a poquito. Ves cómo se te van abriendo puertas y cerrando otras. Es un proceso difícil y de constante esfuerzo. Aterrizas en Sotogrande después de un gran año, el pasado curso en la Triple

Se ha formado un fantástico equipo juntándose los Cambiaso y Castagnola; precisamente ello hace suba aún más el nivel y que se haga más especial jugar ante ellos, llegar a una final y quién sabe, si ganar. Hace crecer la atención, los detalles, la motivación, buscarse las vueltas tácicas, armarse mejor de caballos, etc.

Corona la cosa se dio bien con La Hache… El pasado año se dio genial, la verdad. Venia de muchos años en Cría La Dolfina, en el que me ayudaban mucho y di el salto a competir

con todo, en un equipo de máxima exigencia y a defenderme con mis caballos. Pero visto con perspectiva, creo que fue un gran movimiento y paso al frente. Ganamos en Tortugas

y jugamos dos semifinales. Lástima que no llegásemos más lejos pero avanzamos y peleamos los torneos que es lo importante. Este año se presenta también muy lindo. Para 2025, las expectativas de nuevo con UAE Polo también son altas… Sabemos el equipo que tenemos y que podemos dar mucho juego. Tácticamente, vamos estar muy cómodos en posiciones y compenetrados. Lukín [Monteverde] y yo atravesamos un buen momento, nos divertimos mucho dentro de la cancha y podemos ser un complemento perfecto. Con Juanma Nero y Polito Pieres en las puntas, podemos dar mucho aire y velocidad en el medio. Es un equipo competitivo y muy equilibrado, espero que podamos ser muy competitivos y pelear por lo máximo, ya que el año próximo será muy reñido. Se presenta una Triple Corona 2025 de muchos quilates… Por supuesto. Supone también una gran motivación añadida, para el resto de rivales, cuando se ve que los contrarios van igual o

¿Se viste uno hasta diferente cuando sabe que va a jugar en la 1 de Palermo? Es una sensación muy linda por todo lo que rodea a los días previos a los partidos importantes, todo. El propio viaje a Buenos Aires es muy lindo y siempre tengo en mente lo que me costó entrar, llegar ahí y lo lejos que estuve. Fue difícil hacerse el hueco. Me encanta vivir todos esos momentos, la tensión de la caballeriza el día antes, los petiseros, todo lo que rodea a un partido así lo hace especial. También se dió bien en Inglaterra… Es increíble lo competitivo que está, cerca de 20 equipos de muy alto nivel. Jugamos con equipo nuevo y tuvimos la desgracia del fallecimiento del patrón [Sunjay Kapur]. Era una temporada buena, la primera vez que jugaba con mi hermano Benja los 22 goles, hicimos una buena combinación. Pero se dio esa circunstancia especial, ya todo se hizo un poco raro y no pudimos llegar a los momentos decisivo pero espero que juguemos de nuevo juntos en 2026 y dar pelea. Is it a different and special place beyond polo? Completely, August is very good here. Last year, I stayed in England playing this season but I have great memories of previous years when I came. It is a unique place for playing polo and different to the other places we travel to. Personally, I am not a great enthusiast of the sea but the destination is incredible. The place, the people, the club, the pitches, how competitive the season is, everything is great. There are few places in the world that have treatment of that level for players and patrons. You get to the pitch and everything is ready. In 2025, expectations are once again high with UAE Polo... We know the team we have and that we can really compete. Tactically, we are going to be very comfortable in positions and very closely knit. Lukín [Monteverde] and I are in good form, we have a lot of fun on the pitch and we can be the perfect complement. El combinado albiceleste se impone por segunda edición consecutiva en la Copa Embajada Argentina, tras superar a España (9-7,5) en un duelo lleno de emoción y mucho sabor de alianza entre ambos destinos referentes en el mundo del polo.

Todo el sabor del mejor polo en Sotogrande. las canchas de Los Pinos acogieron, en la jornada de descanso que enlaza la Copa de Plata con la de Oro en el 54º Torneo Internacional de polo, una nueva edición de la Copa Embajada Argentina de Polo que ponía en duelo, en un fabuloso testmatch, a los combinados de España y Argentina. Sin duda, una gran fiesta de polo en Sotogrande y por supuesto, todo un éxito a nivel de público y ambiente. En el apartado deportivo, por segundo año, volvió a dominar el color albiceleste con la victoria por 9-7,5 aunque el partido estuvo lleno de emoción y mucho sabor; animado en las grandes y con presencia de personalida-

des de ambos destinos. Una gran fiesta, como se reflejó de convivencia y unión entre dos destinos con el polo dentro de su ADN, la gran meca del polo y su gran referente en Europa continental. El césped de Los Pinos del Ayala Polo Club recibió a los deportistas españoles Luis Domecq, Nicolás Ruiz Guiñazú, Martín Iturraspe y Gonzalo Entrecanales y a los polistas argentinos Segundo Fernández Llorente, Ciro Urturi, Santiago Laborde y Nicolás Tomasevich. El equipo español tuvo numerosas oportunidades de victoria y fue animado por todos los aficionados. Sin embargo, la selección argentina tomó la victoria con una diferencia de

9-7 en 5 chukkers, un resultado favorable para España en comparación al año anterior. Entre las autoridades presentes en la cita, mencionar es-

Argentina continues its polo dominance in Sotogrande •

The team in sky blue and white claimed its second title on the trot in the Copa Embajada Argentina after overcoming Spain by 9 goals to 7.5 in a clash full of emotion and a great deal of camaraderie between two of the polo world’s leading destinations.

All the flavour of the best polo in Sotogrande. On the day of rest between the Silver and the Gold Cup in the 54th International Polo Tournament, the Los Pinos hosted another Copa Embajada Argentina, in which the Spanish and Argentine national sides went up against each other in a fabulous test match. Undoubtedly, it was a great celebration of polo in Sotogrande and, of course, a resounding success in terms of attendance and atmosphere. On the field, for the second y ear running, the team in sky blue and white dominated again with a 9-7.5 victory, although the match was packed with excitement and flavour: bustling stands and celebrities from both destinations present. A great celebration, reflected in the friendship between two destinations with polo in their DNA: the great Mecca of polo and its leading proponent of the sport on continental Europe. The grass of Ayala Polo Club’s Los Pinos welcomed the Spanish players Luis Domecq, Nicolás Ruiz Guiñazú, Martín Iturraspe and Gonzalo Entrecanales, and the Argentine side of Segundo Fernández Llorente, Ciro Urturi, Santiago Laborde and Nicolás Tomasevich. The Spanish team had plenty of chances to win the match and was cheered on by all the fans. But Argentina claimed victory by 9 goals to 7 over 5 chukkas, an improved result for Spain compared to the previous year. The dignitaries present at the event included the Argentine ambassador to Spain Wenceslao Bunge Saravia, and Benjamín Araya, chairman of the Argentine Polo Association. Of course, on the home side, the mayor of San Roque Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix was in attendance, along with the Andalusian Regional Government representative for Campo de Gibraltar Javier Ros and a special guest, the mayor of Madrid José Luis Martínez Almeida. El golfista alcanza los cuartos de final en el selecto torneo disputado en Oak Hills (Texas, USA).

El andaluz Jacobo Cestino ha concluido su viaje por el US Senior Amateur -ha sido el primer participante español en esta prestigiosa pruebaen la ronda de cuartos de final, en la que ha caído a manos del norteamericano Greg Sanders (1up). El golfista andaluz ha superado tres turnos en el recorrido de Oak Hills CC, en San Antonio (Texas), convirtiéndose en el mejor golfista no estadounidense. Sanders se impuso por la mínima gracias a un birdie en el hoyo 18. Antes, el español comenzó de forma espléndida -marchaba 2up en el 4- y supo remontar la desventaja de tres hoyos que atesoraba en el 13 con tres birdies seguidos (hoyos 15, 16 y 17). En cualquier caso, Cestino ha vendido muy cara su derrota en su primera participación.

En la madrugada del martes, Cestino eliminó a dos jugadores estadounidenses en el transcurso de una jornada maratoniana. Yago Horno subcampeón del Boys’Amateur en Baltray tras un playoff legendario El golf andaluz está de celebración después de otro hito en la mítica links de Country Louth (Baltray), Irlanda. Yago Horno, mejor jugador junior nacional del momento, procedente de Zaragoza, pero desarrollando su crecimiento golfístico entre Huelva y Sotogrande, cayó en el desempate después de una final a 36 hoyos ante el neerlandés Guus Lafeber después de una final vibrante y dura por el viento. Tras cinco días idílicos, el campo mostro su dificultad con rachas de 30 km/h que exigían un control absoluto. Lafeber pegó una bola más baja durante buena parte del día y llegó a mandar por cuatro hoyos tras el 11. Ante esta situación Yago actuó con su capacidad habitual para recuperar y fue limando la diferencia hasta devolver el duelo a la igualdad a falta de cinco

hoyos. En el tramo final, el neerlandés salvó un putt vital de 4,5 metros para par en el 34º y embocó otro de unos 7,5 metros para birdie en el 35º que parecía definitivo.

Yago Horno runner-up in the Boys’ Amateur at Baltray after a legendary play-off Andalusian golf is celebrating after another milestone at the legendary Country Louth (Baltray) links in Ireland. Yago Horno, currently Spain’s best junior player, hails from Zaragoza but developed his golfing skills in Huelva and Sotogrande. He lost in a play-off after a thrilling 36-hole final against Dutchman Guus Lafeber in windy conditions. After five idyllic days, the course showed its difficulty with gusts of 30 km/h that demanded absolute control. Lafeber hit a lower ball for much of the day and was four holes ahead after the 11th.
