123RD HURLINGHAM OPEN What seemed like an impossible feat finally occurred. There will be no Triple Crown winner this year: Ellerstina beat the unbeatable La Dolfina 10 goals to 9 in what was a very tight final to claim the Hurlingham Open. It is hard to believe that this comes as a surprise, considering how amazing a team Ellerstina actually are. But La Dolfina’s reign over polo was such that it seemed that no team would ever beat them.

La Dolfina had not lost a game since that memorable 2012 Palermo final, when Ellerstina claimed their last big title. Now, four years later, Ellerstina have finally managed to beat their nemesis. This title is special for the team for many reasons, mostly because it is Polito’s first title of the Argentine Triple Crown, and the first for Mariano Aguerre as team coach. And of course, this title gives them the encouragement they needed before Palermo.

It was a very even, hard fought game, with few goals and many tied chukkas. Nico Pieres scored the first goal for Ellerstina while Adolfo Cambiaso scored the first for his team. The first chukka finished 1-all and no goals were scored in the second. The game remained tied until the fifth as every goal scored was answered straight away.

Ellerstina only scored once in the fifth, while La Dolfina scored twice; Pablo Mac Donough and Cambiaso made it 6-5 by the end of the sixth. This was the first time in the match that La Dolfina finished a chukka in the lead.

Lo que parecía imposible, finalmente se dio. No habrá ganador de la Triple Corona este año: Ellerstina logró quebrar el “maleficio” y consiguió vencer a La Dolfina por 10 a 9, para quedarse con el Abierto,de Hurlingham, tras una muy ajustada final.

Resulta casi increíble pensar que fue una sorpresa, tratándose de un equipo de la categoría de Ellerstina. Pero el dominio de La Dolfina era (o es...) tal, que hasta parecía imposible que un equipo de su nivel pudiera ganarles, cosa que no sucedía desde aquella memorable final de 2012, en Palermo, cuando Ellerstina ganó su último título grande.

Hoy, cuatro años después, lograron finalmente cortar la racha invicta de La Dolfina.

Pero además, esta victoria tiene un par de ingredientes que la hacen aún más especial. Fue el primer título de Triple Corona para el primo Polito y el primero para Mariano Aguerre como coach del equipo. Y por cierto, un título que les da un empuje y una motivación más que especial, con Palermo a la vuelta de la esquina.

En lo que respecta al partido, fue muy parejo, muy peleado, con muy pocos goles y reiterados empates. Abrió el marcador Nicolás Pieres apenas comenzado el cotejo y casi finalizando ese primer episodio, empata Adolfo Cambiaso.

Luego de un segundo chukker sin goles, y a partir del tercer parcial, vino una seguidilla de chukkers empatados hasta el quinto. Palo y

There were just minutes left in the game, and everything seemed to be over for Ellerstina.

But it wasn’t. Gonzalito scored twice to make it 8-9, and with only fifteen-seconds left on the clock, Facundo scored to tie the game and send it into extra chukka. Here Gonzalito came through again, stealing the ball and running to goal. He dodged his way through his opponents and scored an impressive neck shot to make it 10-9. His golden goal gave Ellerstina their first title in four years. n

La Dolfina consigue sacar dos goles de ventaja en el séptimo chukker (7 a 5) gentileza de Adolfo Cambiaso. Responde Facundo, pero Cambiaso convierte un penal de 30 yardas. La Dolfina estaba arriba por dos (8 a 6), y había solo un chukker más por jugarse.

Apenas comenzó ese último chukker, Cambiaso anota una vez más. Convierte un penal de lugar. La Dolfina así estira su liderazgo a tres goles (9 a 6), la mayor de todo el encuentro. Faltaban poco más de dos minutos de juego y todo parecía encaminarse a un nuevo título para el equipo de Cañuelas. Pero en un minuto la historia se dio vuelta: Gonzalito marcó dos veces para el 9 a 8, y a tan solo 15 segundos de finalizar el tiempo reglamentario, Facundo mete el empate que manda el partido a suplementario.

En una gran jugada, aparece Gonzalito a contramano; se roba la bocha, esquiva a los jugadores de La Dolfina, corre solo... y mira hacia atrás, por las dudas, antes de mandar un tiro de cogote impresionante. Ese cogote que fue el 10 a 9, y ese tan esperado y ansiado título de la Triple Corona para Ellerstina. n

This year’s Tortugas Open bought no surprises as La Dolfina claimed the title for a fourth consecutive year after beating Ellerstina 18-12 in the final of the first leg of the Argentine Triple Crown.

Apart from analysing the game itself, it is worth noting the way in which La Dolfina continues to make history, in terms of titles and horses. Today Adolfo Cambiaso played six clones of his legendary mare Dolfina Cuartetera, all of which went incredibly well. Dolfina Cuartetera Clone B06 (age five) was awarded twice, being named Best Polo Argentino Producto by the AACCP and Best Playing Pony of the final.

And what else can we say in terms of the team itself? This current La Dolfina formation came together in 2011, they have played fifty-five games together and only suffered three defeats. After winning their first Triple Crown in 2012, they have claimed thirty-six consecutive victories and ten titles. While Cambiaso states that they “don’t look at numbers because they are distracting,” this squad (which today had Pepe Heguy as coach instead of Milo Fernandez Araujo, who is

Nada ha cambiado, al menos por ahora... una vez más, La Dolfina hizo de las suyas, esta vez para quedarse por cuarto año consecutivo con el Abierto de Tortugas, venciendo nuevamente a Ellerstina por 18 a 12, en lo que fue la primera final de la Triple Corona Argentina 2016.

Además de analizar lo que fue el partido en sí, vale hacer párrafo aparte con La Dolfina, que sigue haciendo historia. En primer lugar, del lado de los caballos, porque Adolfo Cambiaso jugó hoy seis clones de su legendaria yegua, la Dolfina Cuartetera, todas con rendimiento espectacular. Tal es así que las dos mantas a la mejor yegua de la final se la llevó Dolfina Cuartetera Clon B06 (5 años) - la de la AACCP, como Mejor Producto Jugador Polo Argentino y el BPP de la final.

En cuanto al equipo... que más se puede decir? Desde el 2011, cuando se presentó esta formación, llevan 55 partidos juntos y tan solo 3 derrotas; desde la primera Triple Corona conseguida, 36 victorias y 10 títulos, todos de forma consecutiva. Y si bien Adolfo Cambiaso dice que “nosotros no miramos los números porque distraen”, lo cierto es que este cuarteto (que hoy tuvo a Pepe Heguy como coach, en lugar de

in Venezuela) has drastically exceeded everyone’s expectations. The relationship the four players have established has allowed them to reach a state of perfect understanding on the field. Led by Cambiaso, who at forty-one years of age is playing better than ever, La Dolfina continue to dominate the best polo in the world.

This final between La Dolfina and Ellerstina was a game of two halves.

The match got off to an even start, with both teams bringing the thunder, even though La Dolfina always maintained a slight advantage. The reigning champions won the first chukka 3-1, but Ellerstina made a quick comeback to tie the game 4-4 in the second thanks to goals from Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres.

The following chukka saw both teams score several times, and that exchange continued until the fourth. La Dolfina could not pull away from Ellerstina. In the fourth chukka Facundo Pieres scored a thirty yard penalty to tie the game at 10-all, but Cambiaso scored in the last thirty-seconds to make it 11-10 at half time.

The first half was not lacking in excitement; both teams played flatout, scoring many field goals and gi-

Esta nueva final entre La Dolfina y Ellerstina tuvo dos partes diferenciadas. Muy parejo al principio, con ambos equipos muy enchufados, aunque siempre con leve ventaja para La Dolfina. Si bien el campeón defensor arrancó 3 a 1 en el primer chukker, Ellerstina remontó la diferencia enseguida; con goles de Facundo y Gonzalito Pieres, Ellerstina consiguió empatarlo 4 a 4 en el segundo parcial.

Los chukkers siguientes fueron gol a gol, así hasta el cuarto parcial. La Dolfina no podía alejarse de Ellerstina, que no les sacaba el pie de encima. Promediando el cuarto episodio, Facundo Pieres convirtió un penal desde las 30 yardas, que marcó un nuevo empate - 10 a 10. Finalmente, en los 30 segundos adicionales, Adolfo Cambiaso anota para ir al half time arriba por 11 a 10.

But things changed in the following chukkas. While Facundo Pieres scored a penalty for Ellerstina, Cambiaso and David “Pelon” Stirling gave La Dolfina the advantage. By the end of the fifth chukka the score was 14-11 in favour of La Dolfina. Slowly but surely, La Dolfina broke away from Ellerstina by working on their defence and marking; “that was the thing we improved the most in the last three chukkas, and that is how we won the game,” stated Juan Martin Nero after the match. La Dolfina won the sixth chukka 2-0, with goals from Nero and Cambiaso giving La Dolfina a 16-11 advantage. Ellerstina worked hard to get back in the game, but they were helpless at the hands of their rivals.

Stirling and Nero scored the last two goals for La Dolfina. With less than five minutes to go, the Cañuelas based team were 18-11 up. Facundo Pieres was the last to score, making it 18-12 with four minutes left on the clock. The bell rang and La Dolfina claimed their fourth consecutive Tortugas Open title. Another victory, another celebration, and La Dolfina’s historic winning streak continues. n

La historia se iba a dar vuelta en los chukkers siguientes: si bien Facundo Pieres convierte un penal para Ellerstina, Cambiaso (2) y Pelon Stirling comienzan a torcer el destino. El quinto chukker cierra 14 a 11 a favor de La Dolfina.

Poco a poco, La Dolfina se va acercando a su gran objetivo: ajustaron las marcas (“fue lo que mejoramos en los últimos tres chukkers, y así logramos ganar el partido”, comentó posteriormente Juan Martín Nero) para convertirse en los protagonistas absolutos de los 14 minutos que le quedaban al partido. 2 a 0 parcial, en el sexto chukker, a cargo de Cambiaso y Juan Martin Nero, para quedar cómodos arriba 16 a 11. Ellerstina, impotentes ante la superioridad de su rival, hizo cuanto pudo para revertir la definición.

Stirling y Nero marcan los dos últimos goles para La Dolfina. Faltaba poco menos de 5 minutos y el equipo de Cañuelas ganaba 18 a 11, dominando la situación a su antojo, en ataque y defensa. Tan solo Facundo Pieres pasó una vez más por los mimbres, pero, y si bien faltaban 4 minutos, La Dolfina lo tenía todo bajo control.

Un nuevo festejo, un nuevo título, para un equipo que no solo no tiene ya nada que demostrar, que ya está en la historia, sino que tampoco se cansa de ganar y que van por más. Esta historia continuará... n

ADOLFO CAMBIASO: This is a historic day for me. I have always dreamed about playing an important final with Cuartetera clones. I played six today and I think that they lived up to the occasion.

I arrived thinking that 03 and 05 were the best; 01 was going well so I left her for the final. But 06 was the best.

We played open polo. I was very focused and I think that helped the team; it was contagious. Pepe pointed out our mistakes; Milo was right, Pepe says the right thing at the right time. He helped us a lot at the beginning, when we were very nervous. We missed Milo but I want to thank Pepe for being here today. I also want to merit Gastón Dorignac, because it rained 50mm and the fields were in perfect condition. The umpires let us play, they blew what needed to be penalised, and everyone enjoyed a day of good polo.

I don’t want to look at the numbers because they are distracting; all I know is that I am playing with friends. We have been playing together for six years now and we have become very close. That certainly helps the team. We are now going to focus on what is coming next: Hurlingham.

Para mi es un día histórico. Soñaba con jugar una final de un torneo importante con los clones de la Cuartetera. Hoy jugué seis y me parece que anduvieron a la altura de las circunstancias. Llegué a la cancha creyendo que la 03 y la 05 eran las mejores. La 01 venía mejor, asi que la dejé para la definición. Pero la 06 fue la mejor.

Jugamos abierto, yo estaba muy enchufado y creo que eso ayudó al equipo, fue contagioso. Pepe nos marcaba los errores, Milo tenía razón: Pepe dice las palabras justas en el momento justo. Nos ayudó mucho en el arranque, que estábamos muy nerviosos. Se extrañó a Milo, pero quiero agradecerle a Pepe por haber estado hoy acá.

No quiero dejar de destacar el trabajo de Gastón Dorignac, porque llovieron 50mm y las canchas estaban perfectas. No sé que hicieron, pero me asombró lo bien que estaba la cancha.

Los referees dejaron jugar, cobraron lo que había que cobrar y la gente disfrutó de un buen polo.

No quiero mirar los números porque distraen; yo solo sé que estoy jugando entre amigos. Llevamos seis años juntos y nos hicimos muy amigos, todo eso ayuda a que el equipo funcione. Ahora, nos vamos a concentrar para lo que se viene, el Abierto de Hurlingham.

The POLO LEGEND Turns 80 Los 80 años de la LEYENDA del polo

He was named Juan Carlos after his father, but he has always been referred to as “El Ingles”, Juancar, or most commonly, Juancarlitos. Juan Carlos Harriott, a polo legend, considered by many as the greatest player this sport has ever seen, turns eighty today.

Harriott epitomises a golden age of polo; he is an icon in Argentina and around the world, only comparable to what Adolfo Cambiaso has become today. A man of few words, Juancarlitos spends his time in his beloved Coronel Suarez, only appearing at the polo for the final of the Palermo Open, where he is given the seat of honour in the C stand.

Born on October 28, 1936, in Coronel Suarez, Province of Buenos Aires, Juancarlitos learnt to ride and stick and ball at a very young age. He began to show promise straight away, and in 1953, after winning the kids tournament (Vargas Cup), his handicap was raised to one. That same year he was put straight up to 3-goals and was on his way to becoming a polo legend.

Su nombre es Juan Carlos, al igual que su padre. Pero nadie lo conoce como tal. Le dicen el Inglés, también, incluso muchos lo llaman Juancar; pero la referencia inexorable para saber de quién se trata es el diminutivo de su nombre: Juancarlitos. Juan Carlos Harriott (h), una leyenda del polo -tal vez la mayor de este deporte-, considerado por muchos el mejor jugador de la historia, que el pasado 28 de octubre cumplió sus primeros 80 años.

Símbolo de toda una época, ganador de todo cuanto pudo ganar, Juancarlitos es una referencia indiscutible, un ícono no sólo del polo, sino del deporte de la Argentina y del mundo, y sólo comparable con el fenómeno que hoy constituye Adolfo Cambiaso.

Reservado y de pocas palabras, Juancarlitos pasa sus días en su amado Coronel Suarez, y se lo ve por el polo en raras ocasiones; la más probable es en las finales del Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo, en Palermo, donde ocupa un lugar de honor en el palco de las autoridades.

to dominated the polo scene. In 1951, Los Pinguinos cut the Alberdi and Cavanagh winning streak and in 1952 the name Harriott appeared among the winners of the most important tournament in the world. Juan Carlos Harriot (Senior) joined Coronel Suarez and gave the red and blue shirts their second Palermo Open title (the first was won in 1934 by Ricardo E. Garrós 4, Eduardo E. Garrós 4, Enrique J. Alberdi 7 and Juan C. Alberdi 5). The Harriot name entered the history books, and was there to stay.

The 1952 Coronel Suarez champion team was made up of Harriot (8), Rubén Fernández Sarraua (5), Francisco Reyes Carrere (7) and Enrique Alberdi (9) (the latter was also in the 1934 winning team and had previously played in the legendary Venado Tuerto). Suarez repeated in 1953, but Harriott was not in that lineup.

Juancarlitos’ turn came in 1957. El Trébol and Venado Tuerto claimed the title back and forth between 1954 and 1956, but Coronel Suárez came back all guns blazing in 1957. Juan Carlos decided to bring his 7-goal son into the lineup (alongside Enrique Alberdi and Bertil Andino Grahn), and Coronel Suárez went on to win the most prestigious polo title in the world. In 1958, another legendary lineup was formed as two Harriot’s and two Heguy’s (from Intendente Alvear, La Pampa) formed Coronel Suarez Los Indios. This is the only team in the history of polo to win the Palermo Open with a lineup consisting of two father-son pairs: Juan Carlos and Juancarlitos Harriott, and Antonio Heguy and his son Horacio. Juancarlitos was already one of the best in the world, rated at 9-goals.

The team won the Open again in 1959, but with Luis Lalor (7) playing instead of Antonio Heguy.

In 1960, El Trébol broke Suarez’s winning streak for the last time. From 1961 through to 1980, polo was to be dominated by one player: Juancarlitos Harriot. He was raised to 10-goals in 1961, a handicap he maintained until he retired from the high-goal in 1980. Always playing as Suárez’s number 3, Juancarlitos became the perfect player - a brilliant strategist and playmaker. In 1967 the most famous lineup was formed with brother Alfredo. Now two pairs of brothers ran the polo stage: Juancarlitos and Alfredo Harriott, and Horacio and Alberto Pedro Heguy. Together they played some of the most memorable games in polo history as they took on their greatest rival, Santa Ana. In 1974 Coronel Suarez became the first team to ever reach a perfect 40-goal handicap.

The achievements of Coronel Suarez are overwhelming, and Juancarlitos lead the team to victory over many years: he won the Argentine Open twenty times, the Hurlingham Open fifteen times, and the Tortugas Open seven times, as well as winning the Triple Crown four times (1972, 1974, 1975 and 1977).

With Suarez he won a total of 28 tournaments. He represented Argentina in the Copa de las Américas, winning the Cup in 1966, 1969, 1979 and 1980 (the Argentine team at that time was composed of the same four Coronel Suarez players).

Overall Juancarlitos claimed over fifty titles, not only in the Triple Crown, but in tournaments organised by the AAP. Fun fact: Juancarlitos never won the Copa República Argentina, the only tournament in the world with no handicap limit (for teams from 0 to 40 goals).

Juan Carlos Harriott (padre) integró el equipo de Coronel Suarez que le dio a la mítica camiseta a rombos azul y roja su segundo Palermo - el segundo después de aquel de 1934, con Ricardo E. La hora de Juancarlitos iba a llegar en 1957. Tras un paréntesis en el que El Trébol y Venado Tuerto se repartieron los triunfos entre 1954 y 1956, Coronel Suárez retornó a lo más alto en 1957. Así, Juan Carlos decidió incorporar al equipo a su hijo Juancarlitos, ya por entonces con 7 goles de handicap, para ganar Palermo con el legendario Enrique Alberdi, y Bertil Andino Grahn. Y al año siguiente, en 1958, comenzó a gestarse lo que ya iba a ser leyenda. La unión de los Harriott y los Heguy, estos últimos provenientes de Intendente Alvear, en la Provincia de La Pampa, formó Coronel Suarez Los Indios, en lo que ha sido hasta aquí el único cuarteto conformado por dos duplas de padre e hijos campeones de Palermo - Juan Carlos y Juancarlitos Harriott, más Antonio Heguy y su hijo Horacio. Juancarlitos ya se estaba perfilando entre los mejores, con sus 9 goles de handicap. Repiten en 1959, pero ya con Luis Lalor (7) en reemplazo de Antonio Heguy.

En 1960, El Trébol vuelve a interrumpir la racha ganadora de Suarez; pero iba a ser la última vez, porque desde 1961 y hasta 1980, la historia iba a tener a Juancarlitos como protagonista excluyente. En 1961 consiguió los 10 goles de handicap, que mantuvo ininterrumpidamente hasta su retiro de la alta competencia, en 1980. Siempre defendiendo los colores de Suárez, desde su posición de número 3, Juancarlitos se convirtió en el jugador perfecto, un brillante estratega y organizador del juego.

En 1967 nació la más famosa y legendaria formación del equipo, con la incorporación de Alfredo, hermano de Juancarlitos.

Eran así, dos pares de hermanos - Juancarlitos y Alfredo Harriott, y Horacio y Alberto Pedro Heguy. Juntos, protagonizaron partidos memorables, y duelos para la historia con su eterno rival, Santa Ana. Y a fines de 1974, Coronel Suarez se convierte en el primer equipo de la historia en lograr el handicap perfecto, los 40 goles.

In terms of international polo, Juancarlitos won the Gold Cup in Sotogrande in 1975 and 1976. He was prized many times, winning the Silver Olympia on five occasions; in 1976 he became the first polo player to ever win the Gold Olympia for Sportsman of the Year. The only other player to share this honour since has been Adolfo Cambiaso, who won the title in 2014.

On July 1, 1980, at 44 years of age, Juancarlitos hung up his stick and his helmet. That year he was honoured again, winning the Platimun Konex Prize for Best Polo Player in History and receiving a Merit Diploma. In 2015 he entered the Hall of Fame at the Museum of Polo & Hall of Fame in Palm Beach.

En total, Juancarlitos acumuló más de 50 títulos, no sólo en lo que se refiere a la Triple Corona, sino en copas organizadas por la Asociación Argentina de Polo.

El dato curioso: Juancarlitos nunca ganó la Copa República Argentina, el único certamen del mundo sin tope de handicap (para equipos de 0 a 40 goles). Anécdota de color, que, por supuesto, no influye en su impecable carrera.

Juancarlitos Harriott is charismatic, humble, and passionate about horses and the sport. He is the polo legend who ruled polo for over two decades, drawing thousands of people to Palermo at a time when there wasn’t social media or television.

People travelled from all over the world to watch the extraordinary player. Today on his 80th birthday, his legend continues to grow.

To prove Juancarlitos’ enormous influence we can recall an anecdote which links him to another Argentine sports star: Guillermo Vilas, the most famous tenis player in the country’s history. In a whiskey advert, Vilas stated that his “Great Willy” (shot where he hit the ball with his racquet between his legs) was inspired by Juancarlitos and the backhanders he hit between the horses legs.

En lo que se refiere al polo internacional, en 1975 y 1976 ganó la Copa de Oro, en Sotogrande. Y tuvo premios de sobra. El Olimpia de Plata, en cinco ocasiones, y en 1976 se convirtió en el primer polista en ganar el Olimpia de Oro al deportista del año. Fue el único hasta que compartió el honor con Adolfo Cambiaso (¿quién sino?) en 2014.

El 1° de julio de 1980, Juancarlitos, con 44 años, colgó el taco y la bocha. Y ese año le esperaba un galardón más: El Premio Konex de Platino al mejor polista de la historia y Diploma al Mérito. Más recientemente, en 2015, fue ingresado al Hall of Fame, por el Museum of Polo & Hall of Fame, en Palm Beach.

Carismático, estratega, sencillo, de pocas palabras, apasionado por su deporte y los caballos, Juancarlitos Harriott, que hoy cumple 80 años, fue la estrella indiscutible del polo durante más de dos décadas. En tiempos en que el polo era un deporte de campo, un deporte amateur, sin redes sociales, con la incipiente televisión y sin la voracidad actual de los medios, Juancarlitos llenaba tardes gloriosas en Palermo. Gente de todas partes venía a admirar al extraordinario jugador, que era parte de un equipo que quedó definitivamente en el Olimpo de la historia del polo y del deporte. Y que año tras año agiganta aún más su leyenda.

Y para demostrar la influencia de un deportista como Juancarlitos, vale recordar una anecdota que lo relaciona con otra estrella del deporte argentino y mundial: nada menos que Guillermo Vilas, el más grande tenista de la historia de Argentina. Vilas contaba que se inspiró para crear su famosa Gran Willy (aquel tiro que ejecutaba con su raqueta entre sus piernas), en un aviso publicitario de whisky, en la que Juancarlitos pegaba un backhander por entre las patas de su caballo...

Al Pacino, the award winning American actor, landed in Argentina to present his one-man show, “An evening with Al Pacino,” in the Colón Theatre in Buenos Aires.

The actor has delighted spectators with his magical performance, which recounts in first person the trajectory of his life and career, including a recreation of his most emblematic roles, from “Scarface” and “Serpico” to “The Godfather,” as well as that unforgettable tango “Por una cabeza” in “The Scent of a Woman,” where he won an Oscar for Best Actor.

Pacino got the chance to get away from the city and spend an afternoon at La Aguada with the Novillo Astrada family. On Sunday, October 30, Al Pacino and his partner, Argentine Lucila Polak, spent a day in a typical Argentine estancia, enjoying a traditional asado alongside Argentine movie stars Guillermo Francella and Ricardo Darín, both internationally recognised Oscar winning actors. They were also joined by renown Argentine Director, Pablo Trapero.

LA INDIANA It was an unforgettable 2016 for La Indiana. Michael Bickford’s team had the season of a lifetime, reaching five consecutive finals and becoming one of the main protagonists of the English high goal season. They fell just short of claiming the Queen’s Cup and the Gold Cup, but they finally celebrated in St. Tropez after claiming the Cote d’Azur Cup and the Open du Soleil.

Un 2016 difícil de olvidar para La Indiana. El equipo de Michael Bickford tuvo una temporada para el recuerdo, llegando a 5 finales de manera consecutiva, siendo uno de los principales protagonistas de la temporada alta de Inglaterra. Se quedó en las puertas de la Queen’s Cup y la Gold Cup, pero se dio el gusto de festejar en Saint Tropez, en los dos certámenes a los que se presentó a jugar: la Cote d’Azur Cup y el Open du Soleil.

The biggest rivalry of the season was undoubtedly between King Power and La Indiana. Over three months, in two different countries (England and France), the organisations faced each other a total of six times, each claiming three wins a piece. La Indiana won every time the teams faced each other in a semifinal: Queen’s Cup, Cote d’Azur Cup and Open du Soleil. But King Power won the final of the Gold Cup and the qualification matches of the Queen’s Cup and the Open du Soleil. Gonzalito Pieres and Michael Bickford were present in all six matches.

Sin dudas, el gran duelo de la temporada fue el que sostuvieron King Power y La Indiana. Y es que en un período de 3 meses, y en dos países distintos (Inglaterra y Francia), se enfrentaron en 6 oportunidades, con 3 triunfos por lado. La Indiana se quedó con el triunfo cada vez que se midieron en una semifinal: Queen’s Cup, Cote d’Azur Cup y Open du Soleil. Por su parte, King Power se quedó con la victoria en la final de la Gold Cup y en partidos de etapa clasificatoria en la Queen’s Cup y en el Open du Soleil. King Power claimed the Gold Cup for a second year in a row. After a shocking defeat in the Queen Cup semifinals against La Indiana, the Thai team regrouped and brothers Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres charged forward to claim the title again. They beat La Indiana in the final, a game which was noted for its good umpiring.

Cuando parecía que su derrota en semifinales de la Queen’s Cup ante La Indiana parecía sembrar algunas dudas en el equipo de origen tailandés, la formación que alineó, al igual que en 2015, a los hermanos Gonzalo y Facundo Pieres, llegó a la definición con mucha confianza. Lastly, the stand out news of the season was the return of polo to Madrid. The city hosted a month of exciting polo, recalling the rich history of the Real Club de Polo at Puerta de Hierro.

MADRID BERLIN Berlín hosted the European Championship, just as in 1936, the last time polo was an olympic sport. The tournament was organised by the FIP. Ireland defeated France in the final to claim the prestigious title.

-Berlín fue el escenario -al igual que en 1936, cuando por última vez el polo fue olímpico- del Campeonato Europeo, organizado por la FIP. En la final del certamen Irlanda logró superar a Francia, y se quedó con el tan ansiado título, en un torneo que fue muy competitivo.

Paris (Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne), one of the most picturesque polo destinations in the world, hosted a wonderful season with several different tournaments. The Open de Paris was the highlight of the summer, and the final saw Costa Rica defeat La Concepcion.

Paris cuenta con uno de los lugares más pintorescos del mundo para jugar al polo (Bagatelle, en el Bois de Boulogne) y volvió a tener una temporada para el recuerdo, con varios campeones distintos. Pero, como ocurre año tras año. el momento cumbre de la temporada fue el Open de Paris, que culminó con una gran final, en la que Costa Rica derrotó a La Concepcion.

If one could choose the best place to play polo, it would be very hard to choose a place other than Santa María Polo Club, or Sotogrande, since the south of Andalucía has everything one needs to play polo.

Exciting polo was on display for all, with thousands of spectators enjoying the sport and everything that surrounds it.

The high-goal presented some unexpected turns as Dubai was eliminated from the Silver Cup, breaking the record they held for almost three years. Brunei and Ayala made it through to the final: Pelón Stirling and Pablo Mac Donough faced brothers Facundo and Nicolás Pieres; “half of Ellerstina” vs. “half of La Dolfina.” It was a fun game to watch and both teams were evenly matched, but in the end Brunei came out on top to claim the Silver Cup. Stirling was named MVP of the final.

Next up, the 45th Gold Cup, the most prestigious tournament of the Spanish season. The competition was tough from the get go, with interesting matches. Ayala and Dubai came out on top and faced each other in the final. The Pieres brothers now faced the other half of La Dolfina (Cambiaso was the only La Dolfina member in the original Dubai lineup, but an injury in the last chukka forced him off the field and he was replaced by Juan Martin Nero). The fall was rough but luckily no serious damage was caused, and Cambiaso closed the season with golden honours: Gold Cup champion, MVP of the final, BPP of the final, and Best Polo Argentino Breed.

The high-goal season has now come to an end; a record number of spectators attended the final and the presence of the former King of Spain was the highlight of the summer.

The low-goal continues in Sotogrande throughout the year, but we are already anxiously awaiting next year’s high-goal season and the arrival of polo’s best to Andalucía. n

Alto, mediano y bajo handicap para las copas de Bronce, Plata y Oro, durante 30 días, en las tres sedes del club Santa María: Puente de Hierro, el Rio y Los Pinos. Mucho polo y del bueno, muchas emociones y decenas de partidos igualados, divertidos y con mucha gente en las gradas, disfrutando del polo y todo lo que rodea al deporte en el Santa María Polo Club.

En el alto, y contra todos los pronósticos, Dubai quedó afuera de la final de la Copa de Plata, quebrando así un récord que transitaba en su tercer año. Así fueron Brunei y Ayala los equipos que definieron la Plata: Pelón Stirling y Pablo Mac Donough enfrentando a los hermanos Nicolás y Facundo Pieres; “half Ellerstina” vs. “half La Dolfina”. Partido entetenido, que tuvo a un gran Pelón Stirling como figura y que permitió vestir de plateado a los hombres de amarillo.

Así pasó la primera parte, y comenzó con todo la edición 45 de la Copa de Oro, que fue muy disputada durante todo su desarrollo, que tuvo partidos vibrantes y que llevó nuevamente a Ayala a la final, ahora enfrentando a la otra mitad de La Dolfina (si bien el único integrante del campeón de Palermo era Adolfo Cambiaso, una lesión en el último chukker hizo que debiera ingresar Juan Martín Nero por el crack de Cañuelas).

El susto del golpe, que por suerte, no fue más que eso, y Adolfo Cambiaso cerró su jornada y su mes en Sotogrande con todos los honores: campeón de la Copa de Oro, MVP de la final, mejor caballo de la final y mejor caballo de la raza Polo Argentino.

Así pasó la temporada en Sotogrande, con récord de público en la final y la visita del Rey Don Juan Carlos, que fue la coronación ideal para una temporada de polo excelente. Ahora, mientras el bajo sigue su acción durante casi todo el año en el club Santa María, a esperar con ansias los 11 meses que faltan para que vuelva a desembarcar el mejor polo del mundo en Andalucía. n

“Thinking big and putting our best foot forward - that’s what we’re trying to do and the image we’re trying to project” “Pensar en grande y ponerle garra a las cosas es lo que intentamos hacer y transmitir” During the INDI International Polo Tournament, organised by Santa María Polo Club, H10 Polo got the chance to speak with Ramón Mora Figueroa (JR.), president of Santa María Polo Club.

As head of one of the most important polo clubs in the world, he seems satisfied with the most recent season, though true to his style, he won’t rest in his endeavour to improve the club, the level of the game, and the organisation of the International Summer Tournament.

Mora Figueroa revealed that next year he’ll begin the hotel project to be built in Los Pinos, a longawaited project which will start to become reality in 2017.

He also said that “we believe that this season (2016) will be the last in which the High Goal will only be played at Los Pinos [headquarters of Santa María Polo Club]. We’re considering a formula where we want to incorporate a special structure to the International Summer Tournament, separate from the clubs, where we will try to be more demanding with the pitches, including outside pitches so that the level of polo continues to rise.”

“I’d like the International Summer Tournament to be not just ours [Santa María Polo Club], but for more people to feel like it’s their own - we’re seeking ways to make it bigger, with better polo, better facilities, better organisation, sponsors, and a better experience in general,” he added.

Durante la disputa del Torneo Internacional Indi de Polo, organizado por Santa María Polo Club, H10 Polo tuvo la posibilidad de conversar con Ramón Mora Figueroa, presidente del Santa María Polo Club.

El máximo responsable de uno de los clubes de polo más importantes del mundo se mostró satisfecho con la temporada que pasó pero, fiel a su estilo, no descansa en su afán por mejorar el club y el nivel de juego y de organización del Torneo Internacional de Verano.

Mora Figueroa adelantó que el año próximo se pondrá en marcha el proyecto hotelero que se constriuirá en Los Pinos, un proyecto largamente esperado y que comenzará a ser realidad desde el 2017.

También afirmó que “creemos que esta temporada (2016) será la última en la cual el Alto Handicap sólo se juegue en Los Pinos (sede principal del Santa María Polo Club). Estamos dandole vueltas a una fórmula donde queremos incorporar una estructura especial al Torneo Internacional de Verano, separada de los clubes y donde intentemos ser más exigentes con las canchas, incorporando canchas de fuera para que el nivel de polo siga mejorando”.

“Me gustaría que el Torneo Internacional de Verano no sea sólo nuestro torneo (Santa María Polo Club), sino que lo sienta más gente como propio y que busquemos la dirección de hacerlo más grande, con mejor polo, mejores instalaciones, mejora en la organización, sponsors y en la experiencia en general”, agregó.

For the head of Santa María Polo Club, polo “is experiencing a situation of selfishness, and I think it’s important that we all try to get along, to be generous, because without High Goal polo is going to become more and more difficult to continue growing.

We’re working together with the Domincan Republic, analysing and trying to join forces to change this situation in polo where everyone just acts in their own self-interests. I think we can achieve a great deal by working together, the opportunity is there because it’s difficult to find in marketing a concept as privileged as polo.”

Mora Figueroa was honoured to see King Emeritus Juan Carlos I at the Gold Cup final of the International Polo Tournament.

“It’s very important for the Costa del Sol, for San Roque and for Andalusia in general, the support of the monarchy. I think the monarchy in Spain plays a very important role, and we were particularly thrilled that his Majesty had come here for the 45th International Tournament, awarding the Gold Cup,” he said.

He was also grateful for the presence of Manuel Jiménez Barrios, vice president of the Junta de Andalucía, who together with San Roque Town Council support the development of the Equine District in Campo de Gibraltar.

“Thinking big and putting our best foot forward. That’s what we’re trying to do and the image we’re trying to project, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. Sport in general, but polo in particular, a sport which is so exclusive and sophisticated, is a huge marketing generator for the country, for wealth for the region and a different image, in a world where we’re all looking for quality tourism.

We’ve marked out ambitious goals, and with hard work we’ll achieve them,” Mora Figueroa emphasised. n

Mora Figueroa se mostró honrado por la vista del Rey Emérito Juan Carlos I en la final de la Copa de Oro del Torneo Internacional Indi de Polo.

“Es muy importante para la Costa del Sol, para San Roque y Andalucía en general, el apoyo de la Monarquía. Creo que la Monarquía en España juega un papel muy importante y a nosotros nos hizo especial ilusión que su Majestad haya estado aquí con motivo de nuestra 45ª edición del Torneo Internacional entregando la Copa de Oro”, expresó.

También agradeció la presencia del vice presidente de la Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Jiménez Barrios, entidad que junto al Ayuntamiento de San Roque apoyan el desarrollo del Distrito Equino en el Campo de Gibraltar.

“Pelear, pensar en grande y ponerle garra a las cosas. Es lo que intentamos hacer y transmitir, algunas veces con más éxito y otras con menos. El deporte en general, pero el polo en particular, un deporte tan exclusivo y sofísticado, es un gran generador de marketing para el país, de riqueza para la zona y de imágen diferente, en un entorno donde todos buscamos un turismo de calidad.

The end of August was a very busy time for polo in Europe.

Four tournaments were played over one weekend, three of which were hosting their end of season finals: St. Tropez, Deauville and Santa María Polo Club. Over in Germany, the qualifying stages of the XI FIP European Championships were taking place at Preussiche Polo & Country Club on the outskirts of Berlin. After the first games, it was clear that this edition would be as exciting and competitive as ever.

For the past seven years, Sevendays poloevent GmbH have been in charge of organising one of the most prestigious tournaments of the European Season: The Maifeld Polo Cup. This tournament is particularly special because it is played in the impressive Maifeld Stadium, part of Berlin’s Olympic Park. The Park was constructed between 1934 and 1936, for the 1936 Olympics, which coincidentally saw polo included as an Olympic sport for the last time.

The Maifeld is a spectacular sight, where one can glimpse the impressive Olympic Stadium, home to Berlinés Hertha BSC football team. The qualification stages took place under a sun48 m H10 POLO BY LA BOCHA m BERLIN

El final del mes de Agosto de 2016 fue muy agitado: en un mismo fin de semana, cuatro torneos de gran importancia eran disputados, de los cuales tres jugaban sus finales de temporada - St. Tropez, Deauville y Santa María Polo Club. Mientras tanto, en Alemania, el XI. FIP European Championship comenzaba su etapa clasificatoria en el Preussiche Polo & Country Club en las afueras de Berlin, y luego de los primeros juegos, ya se podía vislumbrar que este torneo histórico estaría lleno de grandes emociones y buen juego.

Desde hace siete años, los organizadores del torneo, Sevendays poloevent GmbH se ocupan de uno de los más vistosos torneos de la Temporada Europea: la Maifeld Polo Cup. Este torneo es especial por que se juega en el impresionante Maifeld, parte del predio del Parque Olímpico de Berlin, construido entre 1934 y 1936, para las olimpíadas de ese mismo año, que casualmente vieron al polo ser jugado como deporte olímpico por última vez.

El Maifeld es un escenario poco común: al fondo del estadio se vislumbra el impresionante y gris Estadio Olímpico, la sede del equipo Berlinés Hertha BSC. Bajo condiciones climáticas optimas, la etapa clasificatoria en las afueras de Berlin vio equipos muy fuertes con grandes caballadas: se destacaron siempre Irlanda, Francia, Austria y el local Alemania, quienes fueron los finalistas de cada zona del torneo. Ireland, France, Austria and hosts Germany ruled the group stages, each qualifying for the semifinals of the tournament. Germany, made up of Caspar and Caesar Crasemann, Niko Steinle and Heinrich Dumrath, were a young team coached by polo pro Thomas Winter. Focused, prepared and very professional, Germany were one of the favourites from the start. France also presented a young team, made up by Louis Jarrige (who played with Sainte Mesme in Sotogrande), Florent Garaud, Tancredo Viguie-Desplaces and Julien Reynes.

On the other hand, both Austria and Ireland presented more experienced teams. The Austrian team was lead by Austrian-Argentine professional Diego Braun, who covered every position effectively and encouraged team play. Ireland also proved themselves; Max Hutchinson and Mikey Henderson, both accomplished professionals, took advantage of their horsepower, bought over from Beaufort, to overwhelm their opponents and claim gold in the Championship.

On Saturday, September 3, all eyes turned to the Maifeld. This edition of the European Championship was undoubtedly one of the best ever; the organisation, the facilities and fields and were first-class. A huge VIP section, with an exhibition of high performance cars and delicious catering was available for polo fans, who delighted in the game between Slovakia and Poland, where the latter claimed their first victory. Holland then took on Italy, and the win went to the Italians. Next up, Eltec and Engel & Völkers played for third and fourth place in the Maifeld Polo Cup; Eltec ran out the winners.

Austria tenía en su formación profesional Austro-Argentino Diego Braun quien supo llevar a su equipo hacia las semi-finales desplazándose por la cancha cubriendo todas las posiciones de manera efectiva, convirtiéndose así en la espina dorsal de su equipo. Por otra parte, en Irlanda se destacó la combinación explosiva de Max Hutchinson y Mikey Henderson, ambos profesionales consumados, y su poderosa caballada que llegó desde Beaufort y le permitió a este equipo conseguir el oro en el Campeonato.

El Sábado 3 de Septiembre, la emoción se trasladó al histórico Maifeld. Definitivamente esta edición del Campeonato Europeo fue una de las mejores ya que la organización, las instalaciones y las canchas eran de primera categoría. Un sector VIP inmenso con autos de alta gama en exposición, catering increíble e invitados sumamente interesados en el polo fueron el marco perfecto para los partidos entre Eslovaquia y Polonia, en el cual el equipo Polaco consiguió su primer victoria, y Holanda vs. Italia, resultando victorioso el último equipo nombrado. Más tarde, tuvo lugar el partido por el 3er y 4to lugar de la tradicional Maifeld Polo Cup, que resultó en la victoria del equipo Eltec por sobre el equipo Engel & Völkers.

Sunday, September 4, was the big day at the Olympic Stadium. First up, Austria and Germany fought for third and fourth place. It was an exciting game which, much to the delight of local fans, resulted in a win for Germany. The main event saw Ireland and France face each other in the final. The boys in green were impressively mounted; they gained a quick advantage and went on to win the game and the Championship. To make things even better for Ireland, Max Hutchinson’s “The one who got away” was named BPP. The final of the Maifeld Cup, between Tom Tailor and Kundler, took place under heavy rain. Uwe Schröder’s team, made up of Gastón Maiquez, Daniel Crasemann and Cristobal Durrieu, were victorious.

The Maifeld Stadium opens once a year especially for this tournament. Everyone lucky enough to watch the games in this spectacular setting is already awaiting the time when they can re-enter the beautiful Maifeld. n

El Domingo 4 de Septiembre fue el gran día en el Estadio Olímpico: en primer lugar, se disputó el partido por el tercer y cuarto lugar entre Austria y Alemania, fue un muy emocionante juego con un resultado feliz para el público local, debido al triunfo de los teutones, que finalmente cerraron su campeonato con una sonrisa. Luego, fue el turno de la esperada final entre Irlanda y Francia. El equipo verde, dotado con impresionantes caballos, se puso a la delantera rápidamente hasta conseguir la victoria. Además, el caballo de Max Hutchinson “The one who got away” ganó el premio BPP, consiguiendo así los Irlandeses una victoria completa.

On how the idea to host the World Polo Championship came up, his team and the support from the Government…

“I was invited by Nicholas Colquhoun Denvers, the president of the FIP, to consider putting in a bid on the championship, this invitation was received in April 2015. It was very easy to consider it, because the World Championship is something that has been in my mind for some 13 years as something that I would like to bid for. I was first inspired thinking about the prospects of hosting the WPC, when I saw the games being played in Melbourne in 2001. At that time I developed a relationship with Ambassador Glenn Holden and Marcos Uranga and registered my interest regarding the possibility, so I was very flattered to receive the invitation from the Chairman of FIP. We have the advantage of preparing for this event for years.

We have proven in the past in Australia that we are a generous nation that can provide top class polo ponies. As Australians it is very important for us to show our wonderful horses. We are expecting the standard of the horses to be among the best, if not the best that the WPC has seen. In addition to that we have hired an management team with international sports administrators and event managers who are working on this project day in and day out to produce the most spectacular and most enjoyable polo event that the WPC has ever seen. I have a team of around 20 people working on the ground in a number of different areas. There are different projects that we need to attend to, the obvious one being procuring horses. We have a wonderful team led by Anto White, Pat McGinley, Jim Gilmore and Fiona Turney working together to secure 280 horses who are coming from various parts of the country. Australia is a very large country, and there will be a lot of transporting involved, so procuring horses is not a small job. The second aspect is taking care of logistics, event management would be the third, sponsorship is the fourth, working with our stakeholders, and various more tasks, including marketing to get spectators here. It is a major task requiring people with the highest skills in various departments, and I am very pleased to say that an event of this calibre has had no problems in collecting the best team to join us.

Destination NSW is the state government and tourism board in one entity; they have assisted us to put the bid together, a very important component in winning the bid. The pitch included glossy brochures as well as videos in English and Spanish, and some of the highlights that people can expect when they actually arrive over here. We are very fortunate to have

Hemos comprobado en el pasado que Australia es una muy generosa nación que puede brindar excelentes caballos. Como Australianos, es muy importante para nosotros mostrarlos. Esperamos que el nivel de los caballos sea de los mejores, si no el mejor que el Campeonato Mundial haya visto. Sumado a eso, hemos contratado un equipo que incluye administradores deportivos internacionales y organizadores de evento, que trabajan día a día para producir el más espectacular y más placentero evento de polo que haya visto el WPC. Tenemos un equipo de aproximadamente 20 personas trabajando en locación en varios departamentos. Hay diferentes proyectos que debemos atender, el más obvio es conseguir los caballos. Tenemos un equipo maravilloso liderado por Anto White, Pat McGinley, Jim Gilmore y Fiona Turney trabajando juntos para conseguir 280 caballos que vienen de diferentes partes del pais. Australia tiene una gran superficie y se debe conseguir mucho transporte, entonces esta tarea no es para nada pequeña. El segundo aspecto son las logísticas, la organización del evento será el tercero, los sponsoreos el cuarto, y luego trabajar con inversionistas y más tareas incluyendo el marketing para convocar espectadores a asistir al evento.

Necesitábamos gente altamente calificada para estos departamentos, y me complace mucho saber que en un evento de este calibre, no hemos tenido ningún problema en conseguir el mejor equipo para hacerlo.

Destination NSW es el Gobierno Estatal y el Comité de Turismo en una sola entidad; nos asistieron para armar la oferta, un componente muy importante para ganar el concurso. Nuestra presentación incluyó llamativos folletos, videos en inglés y español y algunos de los mayores atractivos que la gente puede esperar cuando vuelen hacia aquí. Tenemos mucha suerte de tener el apoyo del Gobierno por que ayudan a organizar muchos eventos deportivos importantes en el país tales como el tennis, la natación, netball, cricket, basketball y estaban muy contentos de agregar al polo a este abanico de eventos.”

We are able to cater to all countries and their various needs because the location is so close to the Sydney city, and yet we are in the countryside, so its a great opportunity to blend both city and country together.

Most polo people are very energetic and adventurous and they like to have a lot of fun and being connected to equine. There are many opportunities to visit the biggest and best horse studs in Australia as well as participating in the local polo in the Hawkesbury basin. Many spectators are looking forward to watching the best players come to their district and I’m sure there will be a lot of opportunities for players to stay on and participate in the wonderful polo that’s going on every day in the Hawkesbury basin. The club is very close to the city, where you will find lots of activities such as sailing and motor boating.

As well as enjoying the beautiful beaches, the nightlife and entertainment are fantastic. The restaurants in Sydney are some of the most sophisticated in the world these days. One evening, for example, we will take each of the teams to a family home, and they will be hosted for dinner in a traditional Australian way, for a barbecue. Another evening may well be to visit the Embassy home, where they will be looked after and recognized for their achievements to represent their country in such an esteemed tournament. Another night may feature a harbour cruise on the Sydney Harbour. There are also activities such as visiting the best vineyards and horse studs in the country. Of course there will be night time entertainment, but most of all, there will be the opportunity for teams to immerse themselves and get to play on some fantastic Australian polo ponies and play on some of the most magnificent fields in the country.”

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE LOOKING TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE ORGANIZATION? “We have a fantastic team already on the WPC committee however I would say that we still have people coming to us with ideas that we are open to receiving. Just recently we had someone saying that they are looking to find sponsors and create publicity in their country, and we said of course we are very happy to have them involved in our committee. The opportunity to bring some of the best sponsors into the sport for the first or even the tenth time still exists. We are looking for people that can help us make this event the best and most memorable so far, so to that extent, I would say that we are still recruiting!” n

“THIS IS THE TYPE OF POLO I LIKE PLAYING” “Es el polo que me gusta jugar” The All Pro Polo League (APPL) has become a movement which continues to grow steadily, attracting many supporters as it hosts events around the world with the aim of bringing to fruition its vision of the sport. One of the most outstanding young players to be involved in the APPL is Jerónimo Del Carril. The Argentine spoke to PoloLine about his expectations and objectives for the future.

Hablar hoy en día del All Pro Polo League (APPL) es referirse a una disciplina que ha crecido de manera sostenida, y que cuenta ya con varios adeptos a lo propuesto por ellos y a los distintos eventos que organizan para seguir profundizando su visión acerca del deporte. Uno de los jugadores jóvenes más destacados que se ha acercado al APPL, y que ha sido importante para que muchos otros se acerquen también, ha sido Jerónimo Del Carril. En diálogo con Pololine, el joven argentino cuenta sus expectativas y objetivos para los años que vienen.

“I think that the APPL is a really great idea, and the aim is to see whether the changes can be carried forward into today’s polo; many people agree that something in polo needs to change,” says Del Carril, who is currently playing the Abierto Juvenil with defending champions Tortugas. “I think it can be a good influence on ‘traditional’ polo, and maybe it can be established as a parallel league. But that will be considered further down the road.”

WHAT POSITIVE ASPECTS DOES THE APPL HAVE, AND WHY DO YOU THINK IT HAS BEEN SO WELL RECEIVED? The best thing about it is that it is fun to play: it is open polo, where everyone hits the ball, you go flat out and players are not thinking about winning fouls. It has received positive feedback because everyone who plays gets on really well and it is great to watch. As a spectator you want to enjoy yourself. Also, the matches aren’t long or slow as they can be in ‘traditional’ polo.

“Creo que el APPL es una idea muy buena, que se está llevando a cabo para ver si se puede lograr algún cambio en el polo actual, que para muchos está necesitando algún cambio. Creo que puede llegar a aportar varias ideas al polo “tradicional” y hasta, quizá, se logre formar como una liga aparte. Pero eso se verá más adelante”, destaca quien se encuentra por estos días disputando el Abierto Juvenil junto al equipo de Tortugas, campeón defensor.

¿CUÁL ES EL ASPECTO POSITIVO QUE TIENE?, ¿POR QUÉ PENSÁS QUE TUVO TAN BUENA RECEPCIÓN? En mi opinión, el aspecto positivo que tiene es que es muy divertido de jugar: el juego es abierto, todos la tocan, jugás a fondo y los jugadores no están tan pendientes de los fouls. Creo que la buena onda entre todos los que juegan, y que sea vistoso para ver, hizo que haya tenido tan buena recepción, ya que uno como espectador de cualquier deporte busca entretenerse en el tiempo que dure lo que uno va a ver. Además, que los partidos no sean tan largos y cortados, como algunos de los del polo tradicional, es otro de los aspectos positivos.

WHAT DID THE MAJORITY OF PLAYERS THINK ABOUT THE LEAGUE WHEN THEY WERE FIRST INVITED TO PLAY?

I was among the first group of kids Javier Tanoira invited to play, and at first we thought it was quite weird. Many didn’t think it would work but decided to try anyway. Others found some of the rules quite inter-

esting, like the one where you get a free run at goal if you get fouled, and we thought it would be fun to try them out. And they were. We started in 2015 in Pilar and the practices were really fun to play, because it was a group of friends playing flat out.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO PLAY THE MATCHES?

¿CÓMO FUE LA EXPERIENCIA DE LOS PARTIDOS EN LOS QUE TE TOCÓ JUGAR?

I really enjoyed it; that is the type of polo that I like playing, just with a couple of different rules. I like hitting the ball forwards, backwards, seeing everyone hit the ball and playing quickly. And that is what the APPL is. We also got to play on some really great fields, like the ones at Pilar Chico, Cuatro Vientos and other clubs in Pilar.

Jerónimo Del Carril, at only 18 years of age, is one of polo’s up-andcoming stars. His strong strike makes it hard to believe that he is still so young - he is known to have scored mid-field penalties on more than one occasion - but he has shown his talent in international seasons, such as Dubai, where he played for Habtoor Wolves this year.

Talking about the speed of the game encouraged in the APPL, Del Carril says: “I think the speed of the games and the fact that they don’t last too long is really positive. Games are shorter and more dynamic, for players and spectators alike. The rules are fun, and I think that if they were to be mixed with ‘traditional’ polo rules then we could have something really special.”

En lo personal, me divertí mucho; es el polo que me gusta jugar, con algunas reglas diferentes. Yo me divierto pegándole para adelante y para atrás, que todos la toquen y haciendo todo rápido. Y la verdad es que ésto es justamente todo eso junto, e incluso más divertido.

Además, jugamos en canchas buenísimas, como las de Pilar Chico, Cuatro Vientos y otros lugares en Pilar.

Jerónimo Del Carril, con sólo 18 años, es una de las grandes promesas que tiene el polo argentino. Dueño de una pegada muy potente, por momentos parece difícil creer su corta edad. Justamente, se lo ha podido ver mostrando ese atributo, entre otros, en Dubai, junto al equipo de Habtoor Wolves. En más de una ocasión intentó y marcó penales desde mitad de cancha. Con respecto a la velocidad del juego en el APPL, destaca: “La velocidad de los partidos, en cuanto a su duración, me parece que está buena, ya que se acortan bastante los partidos y para los espectadores es todo más dinámico. WHICH WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE APPL AND ‘TRADITIONAL’ POLO? There are a lot less fouls in the APPL, games are shorter and more dynamic, and the fact that you can’t change horses mid-chukka means that games are more even.

WHAT FEEDBACK DID YOU RECEIVE FROM THE PLAYERS AFTER THE GAMES? Everybody had a good time. Some even suggested new ideas which Javier took into consideration. Everyone was excited about the project, that is why they continue playing and want to take part in this year’s tournament.

DO YOU THINK THIS CAN LEAD TO CHANGES IN POLO? I don’t think polo will be played completely with APPL rules, but I do think that ‘traditional’ polo could incorporate some of these rules in the future, especially as many people enjoy watching this type of polo. I think one of the best rules is that you can’t block, and I also like that there are no thow-ins - if you hit the ball out then the opposing team hits in. n

¿QUÉ COMENTARIOS RECIBISTE DE PARTE DE LOS CHICOS DESPUÉS DE JUGAR LOS PARTIDOS? Creo que, en general, todos la pasaron muy bien y se divirtieron mucho. También, muchos propusieron diferentes ideas que Javier Tanoira consideró. Todos estaban muy entusiasmados, por eso mismo siguieron jugando y lo quieren seguir jugando este año.

¿PENSÁS QUE PUEDE LLEVAR A ALGÚN CAMBIO EN EL POLO? No creo que el polo cambie completamente a estas reglas del APPL, pero sí creo que el polo “tradicional” puede llegar a incluir algunas de ellas en un futuro, ya que creo que a mucha gente le agradó ver este tipo de polo. Creo que una de las mejores es la que no te permite bloquear; también, la de que no haya thrown-in cuando la tirás afuera, y que saca el equipo contrario. n

Deauville HISTORY AND LEGEND OF THE ARISTOCRATIC CLUB IN NORMANDY HISTORIA Y LEYENDA DEL ARISTOCR ÁTICO CLUB DE L A NORMANDÍA

ormandy, in northern France, is rich in history. Initially populated by Celtic tribes, it was conquered in 98 AD by the Romans and integrated into the province of Gallia Lugdunensis. Following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 by William the Conquerer, Normandy and England were linked by Norman and Frankish rulers. Between 1956 and 2015 Normandy was divided into two administrative regions: Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy; the regions were merged into one single region on 1 January 2016. Upper Normandy (Haute-Normandie) consisted of the French departments of Seine-Maritime and Eure, and Lower Normandy (Basse-Normandie) of the departments of Orne, Calvados, and Manche. The costal town of Deauville is situated in Normandy, in the department of Calvados. The history of Deauville can be traced back to 1060, then a small fishing village. In 1858 it was decided that a “town of pleasure” should be created on the deserted sand dunes, and in 1862 the first stone of today’s Deauville was laid.

In the 1860s visits from Napoleon III made the coast of Normandy adjacent to Deauville fashionable, and soon speculators developed the infrastructure necessary to accommodate members of the Imperial court and the growing Parisian bourgeoisie. The Duke of Morny, half brother to emperor Napoleon III, convinced the aristocracy that staying in Deauville was very good for their health. Therefore, before the death of the Duke in 1865, certain key investments were made that would transform Deauville’s history. These included a railway from Paris to Deauville, the Deauville hippodrome for horse races, villas, hotels, and a small casino. Deauville slowly became the vacation spot for aristocracy and a spectacular luxury resort which, years later, would attract polo.

ormandía, al noroeste de Francia, es uno de los lugares con más historia del mundo. Es una antigua provincia de Francia, cuyos orígenes se remontan a las invasiones romanas a las Galias. En la Edad Media, fue parte del Reino de Inglaterra, desde 1066, cuando el segundo Duque de Normandía, Guillermo el Conquistador invadió la zona con éxito, y Normandía quedo anexada a Inglaterra hasta 1087, a la muerte del rey.

Hasta 2015 se dividía en dos regiones administrativas: Alta Normandía (Haute Normandie) y Baja Normandía (Basse Normandie). Actualmente, están unidas en la región de Normandía, que componen los departamentos de Calvados, Eure, Mancha, Orne y Sena Marítimo, cuya capital es Rouen. Por cierto, esta última donde tuvo lugar el juicio y el martirio de la Doncella de Orleans, Santa Juana de Arco, en 1431.

En Normandía se encuentra la ciudad costera de Deauville, exactamente en el Departamento de Calvados, en la baja Normandía. Su primera mención se remonta hacia 1060, cuando era apenas un lugar de pescadores, y tenía un pequeño puerto.

Pasaron varios siglos, llegamos a 1862 cuando se colocó la primera piedra de lo que es Deauville en la actualidad. Normandy is mentioned in one of the most iconic works of literature of all time, “A la recherche du temps perdu” by Marcel Proust. Cabourg, in Lower Normandy, was renamed Balbec by Proust; Cabourg is now named Cabourg Balbec as homage to the great writer and his work.

Deauville suffered greatly during WWII. Many of the great properties were confiscated during the German Occupation up until 1944, when the coasts of Normandy set the stage for one of the most significant events in Europe: D-Day. The Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord began the liberation of German-occupied northwestern Europe from Nazi control, and contributed to the Allied victory on the Western Front. The attack took place on five different beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword Beach. It is on these very beaches that one can see, in the summer months, polo horses being worked on the sand.

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, better known as Coco, lost her mother at the age of twelve, and her father subsequently sent her to the Correze, in central France, to the convent of Aubazine, which ran an orphanage. At eighteen, Chanel, too old to remain at Aubazine, went to live in a boarding house set aside for Catholic girls in the town of Moulins. Here she learnt the art of sewing and was later able to find employment as a seamstress.

At Moulins, Chanel met the young French ex-cavalry officer and the wealthy textile heir Étienne Balsan. At the age of twenty-three, Chanel became Balsan’s mistress and for the next three years lived with him in his chateau Royallieu near Compiegne, an area known for its wooded equestrian paths and the hunting life. Polo was also played at Royallieu, and it was there that Chanel first came into con-

La grande mademoiselle, el polista y el nacimiento de un imperio Muy pocos saben que uno de los más grandes imperios de la moda tiene buena parte de su historia en Deauville - estamos hablando nada menos que de Chanel.

In 1909, Coco arrived in París with Etienne, where she opened a small millinery on the ground floor of his apartment. The year before Chanel had begun an affair with one of Balsan’s friends, the aristocrat and British polo player, Captain Arthur Edward Capel. Known as “Boy,” Capel became her mentor and protector. It was he who installed Chanel in an apartment in Paris and financed her first shops.

It is said that Capel’s sartorial style influenced the conception of the Chanel look. Chanel had begun designing hats while living with Balsan, initially as a diversion that evolved into a commercial enterprise. She became a licensed milliner in 1910 and opened a boutique at 21 rue Cambon, Paris, named Chanel Modes.

In 1913, Chanel opened a boutique in Deauville, financed by Arthur Capel, where she introduced deluxe casual clothes suitable for leisure and sport. She would accompany Boy his polo matches and to the races, where she attracted attention for her unprecedented dress sense (she wore riding trousers, among other things). Inspired by the polo world and the clothes Boy wore, Chanel created an immortal style. Along with Paul Poiret, Chanel was credited in the post-World War I era with liberating women from the constraints of the “corseted silhouette” and popularising a sporty, casual chic as the feminine standard of style.

Coco Chanel, La Grande Mademoiselle, is an integral part of the history of Deauville: her inspiration was born of polo and her great love, a polo player who helped her build her empire. It has been suggested that the double C of the legendary brand’s logo means Chanel & Capel...

Acompañaba a Boy en cada uno de los partidos de polo que él jugaba allí, y además ya llamaba la atención, tanto en el polo como en las carreras de caballos, por su particular forma de vestir, que contrastaba con los parámetros de la época - entre otros, Coco utilizaba pantalones de montar. Así, y también ayudada por Boy, Coco instala su casa de modas en Deauville, que era frecuentada por las más elegantes mujeres del aristocrático balneario, fascinadas con sus particulares diseños. Porque inspirada en el polo y en la ropa que utilizaban Boy y los polistas de aquellos años, Coco creó su inmortal estilo, basado en ropa cómoda adaptada al cuerpo de la mujer. Una tendencia que se impuso definitivamente luego de la Primera Guerra Mundial; Coco desterró los asfixiantes corsés y los complicados vestidos que se habían usado hasta entonces, para imponer, entre otros, los pantalones, las remeras a rayas, los blazers (su famoso petit robe noire, el vestidito negro, iba a llegar años más tarde, hacia 1922).

Coco Chanel, la Grande Mademoiselle, es también parte de la historia de Deauville: su inspiración nació del polo, y de su gran amor, un polista, Boy Capel, quien ayudó a forjar lo que es hasta hoy, un gran imperio de la moda, quizás el más mítico de todos. Es más - hay quienes sostienen que la doble C del logo de la legendaria marca es una combinación de ambos - Chanel y Capel...

Deauville continued to grow under the rule of Napoleon III, attracting horse-loving aristocracy from all over the world. The hippodrome was already in place, but there was one thing missing.

Polo in Deauville can be traced as far back as 1880. It is thought that was the year the first polo matches in France were played, particularly a match between England and France. At the time polo complimented the races in the Hippodrome La Touques, but soon polo became a high-society event in its own right. In 1907, Baron Robert de Rothschild, Captain Joubert and the Duke of Guiche founded the Deauville Polo Club, with the Duke as the club’s first president. Work soon began on stables and fields.

Deauville Polo Club quickly became the epicentre of high society.

Polo matches were followed by social events in smart pavilions. In 1912, Boy Capel became a member of the Board of Trustees. After the tragedy of WWI (1914-1918), the club continued to host exhibition matches between English and French teams. By that point the club had two fields. Polo in Deauville flourished during the Roaring Twenties, and the club attracted hoards of sophisticated ladies wearing the most expensive and stylish designs. In the summer of 1922, the Duke of Gramont invited King Alfonso XIII of Spain, married to Eugenie of Battenberg, grand-daughter of Queen Victoria of England, to the club.

Alfonso, a huge polo fan, introduced the sport to his country. The King was warmly greeted at the French club, where he played with his team, El Gordo. The visit of Alfonso XIII caused a great stir in Deauville. Journalist Michel George-Michel wrote at the time: “It was a great attraction seeing His Royal Highness playing polo. The stands were packed. All of London, Paris, Madrid, and their most famous players were there.” Present at the great event were top players such as American Tommy Hitchcock, and Juan Traill, Argentina’s first 10-goal player. Traill was great friends with King Alfonso XIII and they always played together.

El polo llega a Deauville: inicios, la creación de la Coupe d’Or y el prestigio ganado Ya dijimos que durante el Segundo Imperio, bajo el reinado de Napoleón III, Deauville se convirtió en el lugar de ocio elegido de la aristocracia y la nobleza. Teams with names like Piratas, Diables, Charritos, Pickles, Leopards, and Red Devils took part in the tournament, but towards the 1930s the Maltese team Royal Navy stood out most. Winners of the Open de Deauville, the lineup included Lord Louis Mountbatten, a leading figure in English polo, future Viceroy of India, uncle and tutor to Prince Philip, who became the Duke of Edinburgh after marrying Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II. Mountbatten was responsible for encouraging his nephew to play polo.

Another figure commonly see in Deauville was Winston Churchill, already know in the 1920s for his career in politics and recognised as an acceptable amateur player. The most significant moment in Deauville’s polo history came after WWII (1939-1945), when Francois André, President of the chain of hotels and casinos in Deauville, created the prestigious Coupe d’Or. The 20-goal tournament allowed players from all over the world to come and play in Deauville. The tournament has become one of the most prestigious in Europe. The first team to win the Coupe d’Or, in 1950, was the Franco-Spanish team whose patron was Elie de Rothschild. He went on to win the tournament twice more, in 1958 and 1959, alongside the Gracida brothers, Memo and Carlos. The following year Cibao La Pampa became the second team to win the coveted trophy. The patron, Dominican playboy Porfirio Rubirosa, was one of the most renown characters of the jet-set crew. Rubirosa would

Over the years many of the best polo players in the world have played in Deauville. Names like Heguy, Zavaleta, Dorignac, Pieres and Díaz Alberdi were prominent in the tournaments there. For these players, the Coupe d’Or was a crucial stepping stone in their carrer. As well as Argentines, it was common to see players from England, India, Spain, USA, Chile, Mexico, Italy, and of course, France, at the club. Elie de Rothschild, Robert de Balkany, Guy Wildenstein, and Alex Ebeid are some of the first winners, but more recent names like Edouard Carmignac and André Fabre have dominated French polo. In 1977, after his visit to Deauville, HRH Prince Charles was named an honorary member of the club.

Another tournament, the Coupe d’Argent was also established. In 2007, to celebrate the centenary of the club, an extraordinary match between club legends was organised. The Falcons (Ernesto Trotz 7, Lucas Criado 9, Eduardo Heguy 9, Lionel Macaire 8) played Labegorce (Bautista Heguy 10, Tomás Goti 9, Guillermo Terrera 7, Alfonso Pieres 7). Seven years later, in 2014, Deauville Polo Club hosted the World Equestrian Games.

Polo has dominated Deauville for over a hundred years. Every club president, from the Duke of Gramont (1907-1950) to Jean-Edouard Mazery (2015-onwards), has worked hard to maintain the club’s heritage and position Deauville on the polo map. n

El Polo de Deauville ha sido durante más de 100 años la vidriera del polo francés. fanático del polo, fue quien lo introdujo en su país. Su Majestad fue recibido con todos los honores en Deauville, junto a su equipo que se llamaba El Gordo.

La presencia de Alfonso XIII en Deauville causó gran revuelo. Un cronista de la época, Michel George-Michel escribió: “Fue una gran atracción ver a Su Majestad jugando al polo. Las tribunas estaban repletas: todo Londres, Paris, Madrid y sus más famosos jugadores estuvieron allí”. Entre los grandes jugadores presentes en ese gran evento estuvieron el americano Tommy Hitchcock, y Juan Traill, el primer jugador de 10 goles de handicap en Argentina, gran amigo de Alfonso XIII y quien siempre integraba los equipos del rey en distintos torneos.

En los tiempos de entreguerras nació la Coupe de Gramont, y se presentaban a jugar equipos con nombres como Piratas, Diables, Charritos, Pickles, Leopards, Red Devils... Luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945), vendría lo que se considera el hecho más importante de la historia del polo de Deauville: Francois André, presidente de la cadena de hoteles y casinos de Deauville crea la prestigiosa Couple d’Or, cuyo handicap inicial de 20 goles le dio la oportunidad de participar a jugadores de diversos paises.

HIGH GOAL TEAM Entrenar a un equipo de alto hándicap

Having the possibility to train a sports team that competes at the highest level is a privilege. The expectations, and the challenges, are bigger. Commitment, discipline, dedication, hard work, willpower, strength and a desire to win are just some of the qualities that a high goal team must possess.

Even within the high goal handicap bracket there are different levels (18, 20, 22, 26 goal etc.) Every tournament is different; the fixtures, the timetable, the climate and the team. I try to apply the same theories and practices in every place I go. Occasionally, adjustments must be made for certain players, but the overall objective is to avoid injuries and to make sure every player is at an optimal performance level for each match.

Every player is different and as such their training and fitness routines must be personalised. I normally try to do the recovery sessions with everyone together. While these can also be done individually, they do not need to be personalised. I try to encourage team sessions, because building and maintaining team unity is as important off the field as it is on. In my opinion team bonding is one of the key factors of polo.

Nutrition also plays a fundamental role in the physical preparation of players; it is a determining factor to whether a player is able to reach his maximum potential or not. Many players, even at the top level, do not pay enough attention to nutrition and how they fuel their bodies. But there are those who ask questions, inform themselves and do everything to improve their physical health.

Another key factor in the physical preparation of a high goal team is the way in which it reacts to the results on the

En todo deporte, incluido el polo, tener la posibilidad de entrenar a un equipo que compite al máximo nivel, es un privilegio.

Las expectativas y el desafío, naturalmente, son mayores. Compromiso, disciplina, dedicación, trabajo, ganas, esfuerzo, voluntad, son las implicancias que cualquier equipo de alto hándicap, en cualquier país, debería respetar.

Y claro que dentro del alto hándicap podemos diferenciar distintos niveles (18, 20, 22, 26 goles, etc). Cada torneo es distinto; los fixtures, el clima y los equipos, también. Yo intento aplicar las mismas teorías en cada lugar al que voy. En ocasiones, hay que ajustar el entrenamiento con un jugador más que con otro, pero, en principio, el objetivo es evitar lesiones y que cada jugador pueda desplegar su máximo rendimiento en cada partido.

Cada jugador es distinto; por lo tanto, sus rutinas deberían ser ajustadas personalmente. Lo que suelo hacer en conjunto son trabajos regenerativos, los cuales también realizo de manera personalizada pero sin necesidad de que el trabajo sea individual. Es importante mantener la unión de los jugadores del equipo tanto dentro como fuera de la cancha. Desde mi punto de vista, dicha unión es una de las piezas clave de este deporte.

Por otro lado, la alimentación cumple un rol fundamental. Y es que la misma resulta determinante para que el jugador alcance su máximo potencial. Existe una gran cantidad de jugadores profesionales que no le prestan la suficiente atención a la nutrición; pero, a su vez, y es justo mencionarlo, hay muchos otros que, por el contrario, preguntan, se informan y se preparan de acuerdo a sus necesidades.

Otro de los aspectos clave a la hora de preparar físicamente a un equipo de alto hándicap es la manera en que impactan los resultados obtenidos dentro de la cancha. Cabe destacar que los ánimos positivos luego de un triunfo posibilitan que el trabajo de todo aquel que rodea al jugador sea mucho más fácil.

Los resultados positivos ayudan mucho a la moral del jugador, haciendo que cualquier propuesta de entrenamiento sea bien recibida. Pero también es interesante analizar lo que ocurre con los entrenamientos después de un resultado negativo. En esos casos, me gusta trabajar individualmente con cada jugador el día después, generando un diálogo, e intentando sacar el lado positivo de las cosas. Esos trabajos regenerativos son muy importantes en todo aspecto.

Vale destacar también lo que ocurre el día antes y el mismo día de partido. No siempre una sesión de entrenamiento es lo adecuado en la previa a una contienda, ya que a veces un masaje o un día de descanso puede ser muy beneficioso. El día antes, por lo general, se juega una práctica. E independientemente de lo que es la entrada en calor y la elongación, en algunos casos realizamos un trabajo regenerativo donde todos los esfuerzos oscilan entre el 50% y el 55% del esfuerzo máximo. El trabajo complementario siempre es positivo, y el jugador va a poder notar la diferencia en su rendimiento realizando sesiones activas de recuperación. Es importante mantener el ritmo, pero no sobrecargarse.

Y el día del partido es distinto en cada lugar. Todos los jugadores son distintos, y la superstición en polo juega un papel enorme. Antes del partido entramos en calor, generando ese primer vínculo de equipo del día, donde varios de los ejercicios son grupales o en parejas. Ya durante el partido es importante mantener al jugador hidratado. Tip: no esperes a tener sed para tomar agua, ya que la sed es una alerta del cuerpo de que estamos en déficit. Hay que mantenerse hidratado constantemente. Por último, después de cada partido le dedico un tiempo a

Positive results help a huge amount with a player’s morale and this often means that training ideas are well received. However, it is also interesting to analyze what happens in training sessions after a negative result. I like to work with each player individually the day after a loss, start a dialogue and look at the positives. These recovery sessions are important in every aspect, both psychologically and physically.

It is worth highlighting what should happen the day before a match and on the big day. A training session is not always the most best preparation the day before a match; sometimes a massage or a rest day can be far more beneficial. If the team have a practice the day before a match, which is often the case, as well as the

customary warm up and cool down, I often encourage a recovery session, where I make the players work at 50-55% of their maximum output. An adequate training program is always going to provide positive results and the player will notice a big difference in his performance even by just adding active recovery sessions to his routine. It is important to keep a good rhythm, but not to overdo it.

Match day is unique to each place or tournament. Every player is different and superstitions play a big role in polo. Before matches we do a warm up with exercises as a team or in pairs, thereby creating the first link between the team that day. During the match it is important to keep each player hydrated. Tip: never wait until you are thirsty to drink. Thirst is your body’s way of alerting you that you are already dehydrated. For maximum

Many players travel with their personal trainers around the world, just like tennis players do. I hope that more players from the medium and low goal take into consideration the importance of being fitness and thus improve their performance. n

To gain and maintain a good level of play a polo player should have sufficient knowledge of the basics. He can then build on that information to acquire the necessary techniques and master the advanced skills required in the sport. To learn how to play ‘good’ polo, we first have to understand how to ride well. We can then use that knowledge to take the next step.

If one wishes to improve, it is necessary to work on our posture on the horse and the striking platform; this way ball control and game strategy will become easier to manage. The key to achieving a good riding posture is to keep contact between the horse and our legs and to focus on our balance on the horse, no matter the speed we are travelling at.

We must secure our knees against the saddle in such a way that we can still move our feet back and forth with the superior part of our body; this assures balance and that we keep in time with the movements of the horse. This way, we can administer the horse’s energy correctly and direct our efforts to its mouth so as to achieve our desired results.

As we have previously established, the half seat position is the most appropriate to control a polo horse, especially as we increase speed. It is also used in simpler strikes. If we move forward from the half seat, and we take our thighs over the pommel of the saddle, we will be in a striking position. One of the best ways of improving the strike of many players has to do with correcting the way in which they prepare their striking platform.

During the game the player must have control over the horse at all times; one of the best ways to do this is with two hands, even though the reins are usually held in the left hand and the horse is controlled in this manner. The use of the right hand is absolutely necessary when we need greater control of the horse.

Para aprender a jugar al polo “bien”, tendremos que entender primero la equitación y, al mismo tiempo, poder utilizarla en un grado razonable antes de proceder al siguiente paso.

Por eso, es necesario, si quieres mejorar, trabajar sobre la postura a bordo del caballo y la plataforma de pegada; de tal manera que el control de la bocha y la estrategia de juego sean más fáciles.

La clave de un buen asiento es la habilidad de mantener el contacto de tus piernas y el balance sobre el caballo, independientemente de la velocidad que lleves sobre él.

Tendrás que anclar tus rodillas contra la montura, de manera tal de poder mover tus pies hacia atrás y adelante en directa relación con la parte superior del cuerpo en razón de estar balanceado y en sincronía con cada uno y todos los movimientos del caballo. Así, coordinarás y usarás correctamente la cantidad de energía a utilizar en el posterior del caballo, y el control de emitir esa energía a través de la boca del mismo para poder obtener los resultados deseados.

Como ya hemos visto, el medio asiento es el asiento más apropiado para controlar al caballo de polo, sobre todo a medida que éste vaya acelerando. También es usado en golpes fáciles o de mediano alcance.

Si del medio asiento nos movemos hacia adelante, y logramos que nuestras entrepiernas estén sobre el pommel de la montura (borrel), estaremos en la plataforma de pegada.

Justamente, uno de los grandes secretos para mejorar la pegada en la gran mayoría de los jugadores consiste en trabajar y corregir la insegura y mala preparación de la plataforma de pegada.

Durante el juego se hace necesario el control del caballo de manera continua; una buena forma es hacerlo con las dos manos, aunque las riendas mayormente son sostenidas con la mano izquierda y el caballo controlado por ellas. Por su parte, el uso de la mano derecha -a la hora de asistir a la izquierda- es una capacidad absoluta y esencial para el eficiente control del caballo.

Using two hands so as to check or stop the horse does not mean that we diminish the amount of pressure exerted by our legs. We apply pressure with the top part of our legs; the lower half (below the knees) acts as a pushing device which allows us to control the horse from a place other than its mouth.

Usar las dos manos con el propósito de chequear o parar (sujetar) el caballo no significa que dejemos de usar la mayor proporción de presión de agarre con las piernas. Esta última viene justo desde arriba y por debajo de la rodilla, constituyéndose así un mecanismo de empuje desde el asiento más que un acto de controlar al caballo sólo desde la boca.

These are some of the basics which we should concentrate on if we wish to improve our riding posture, our strike, and our overall level of polo. n

We apply pressure with the top part of our legs; the lower half (below the knees) acts as a pushing device which allows us to control the horse from a place other than its mouth.

HOW DID YOU START PLAYING POLO? “I have been playing polo seriously for about five years now. I started playing in England. Before that, I played one or two years on rented horses in Germany as there was no polo in the Czech Republic.

I started the first Czech Polo Club, and the first International polo tournament there, which was broadcast on national television and featured in the papers. I had big sponsors in part helped by my PR company, which takes care of luxury brands. In my second year running the tournament I met Manuel Guevara and his brother, Juancho. They came to play and I met their whole family. We started playing together and I took Manuel to England the following season to play with me and look after my horses. He is fantastic with them.”

“I started slowly but steadily. I have always wanted to play a good level of polo, but never above my level. I have been doing sports my whole life, showjumping and riding before getting into polo. I was on the National Running team as a teenager, so I am a perfectionist - if I do it, I do it properly. That is why we started slow; I wanted to be a true member of the team, not just galloping around, but also participating.

We started playing 2-6 goal tournaments at Guards and the following year we added 8-goal and Juan Cruz [Guevara] joined us. Later we played the 10-goal category and added third Guevara to the team.

Now due to handicap changes we have reached the 12-goal category.

This year we went up to play the 15 goal and 16 goal in Deauville, too.”

“I live in London so I play most of the season in England. My main club is Guards, but I am changing as I don’t really like the politics of it. I have now been playing a lot more in Cowdray; the fields are so much better and I like the atmosphere more. I enjoyed myself a lot there. I also play at a private club called Emsworth - Four Quarters.”

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COME TO DEAUVILLE? “The problem with polo in England is that when you get to the medium goal level, the number of tournaments is limited and you end up playing in the same place against the same people and the same

SUS COMIENZOS Y ACTUALIDAD: Hace unos 5 años que vengo jugando al polo. Arranqué en Inglaterra.

Antes de eso, jugué y alquilé caballos por un par de años en Alemania, ya que no había polo en la República Checa. Allí comencé con el primer club de polo checo y organicé el primer torneo internacional que fue televisado y tuvo repercusión en los medios. Conseguí buenos sponsors, todos ellos me ayudaron en mi compañía de Relaciones Públicas que se encarga del manejo de marcas de lujo. En el segundo año del torneo conocí a Manuel Guevara y a su hermano Juancho, con quienes comencé a jugar. Después me llevé a Manuel a Inglaterra para jugar torneos y para que se haga cargo de los caballos, ya que es fantástico haciendo ese trabajo.

Empecé lento pero seguro; mi intención fue siempre jugar un buen nivel de polo, pero nunca sobre mi nivel. Practiqué deportes toda mi vida, hice salto antes de arrancar con el polo. También fui maratonista, así que soy una perfectionista; si hago algo, lo hago como se debe, por eso comencé de forma lenta. Quería ser un buen integrante del equipo y no solo dedicarme a galopar, sino participar en el partido.

Así, arranque en Guards, en los torneos de 2 a 6 goles de handicap y al año siguiente, para jugar 8 goles, se nos unió Juan Cruz Guevara. Y cuando comenzamos con los torneos de 10 goles agregamos a un tercer Guevara al equipo. Con las subidas de handicap pudimos jugar 12 goles; este año, subimos a 15 y 16 y llegamos a Deauville.

Vivo en Londres, así que juego la mayor parte de la temporada en Inglaterra. Mi club base en Guards, pero lo voy a cambiar porque no me gusta su política. Así que estoy jugando mucho en Cowdray, las canchas y el ambiente son mejores. Me divierto mucho allí, como también en un pequeño club privado llamado Emsworth - Four Quarters.

CÓMO SURGIÓ LA IDEA DE IR A DEAUVILLE? El problema con el polo en Inglaterra es cuando llegás a un nivel de mediano handicap la cantidad de torneos es limitada y terminás jugando siempre en el mismo lugar contra la misma gente y los mismos equipos, y todo se hace un poco aburrido. Además me gusta el sol y el clima en Inglaterra no es siempre el ideal. Así que el año pasado decidí ir a algún lugar más, en el que pueda estar de vacaciones y jugar al polo al mismo tiempo. Por supuesto que mi primera elección fue Soto-

Así que les cambié el lugar, ya que es importante para mi su bienestar.

Además siempre monto a caballo aunque no siempre juegue al polo.

really hard for the ponies. And playing at a very competitive level really takes its toll on the ponies. I love them, so I changed the location for them, I take their wellbeing very seriously. I will always ride horses even though maybe I won’t always be playing polo. I have a farm in Argentina, potrancas and working with gauchos. I am there every morning at 7am, riding for hours. That is what I love to do most.

So ponies are very important. This is why the idea of Deauville came about, and also because Normandy is beautiful. The beaches and the weather are perfect, and it is good for the horses. The start was great, we won the Garment Cup. But entering the Gold Cup the atmosphere changed. I guess French gamesmanship is not English sportsmanship.

The team worked very well, and the combination of the Guevaras and Max Charlton was perfect. It is not all about winning, it is about having fun.”

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR?

I don’t know. I am thinking about St. Tropez but I have to do my research. In terms of polo I would love to go back to Sotogrande, maybe next year or the following year. At the end of the season we will take a look at everything and start brainstorming with the Guevara boys to see how can we make the English season more interesting.”

El próximo año, aún no lo sé, estoy pensando en ir a St. Tropez, pero tengo que investigar. Si fuera sólo por el polo iría a Sotogrande, quizás el año que viene o el otro, pero después de pasar por Deauville podría volver. Es un lindo lugar, está cerca de Inglaterra.

Haré un balance y veremos con los chicos Guevara que podemos hacer para que la temporada en Inglaterra sea mas interesante.

A few years ago my stepson launched a luxury artisanal cachaca brand and I made a deal with him to name my team after the company, and then when his business takes off, he has to finance my polo!” n

With Adolfo Cambiaso at the forefront, as the great forefather, and pioneer of his era, the great majority, and even all, of the high handicap players and breeders, are beginning or have already begun the process to clone their best horses.

Although Cambiaso was not the first person to clone polo horses, he is the one that began to play clones in the Argentine high handicap season. A quick look at the Open lists of the Jockey Club, showed five clones of Dolfina Lapa; in the Tortugas Open, Cambiaso played six Dolfina Cuartetera clones, and one of them, the B06, won two awards: the best horse in the final, and the prize as Best Argentine Polo Product, from the Argentine Association of Polo Horse Breeders.

The results are clear to see, which shows that clones, in addition to being physically identical to the original, have the same performance, or even better. In addition to the prizes in the final, La Dolfina Cuartetera 01 and 06 on their debut at the Triple Crown were nomination by the Argentine Association of Polo Horse Breeders, as the best mares in the match between La Dolfina and El Paraiso.

The history of cloning dates back to 2007 in the United States, when Charlie Armstrong decided to clone his mare Sage, producing polo’s first clones Show Me and Shawnee. The first person to attempt to clone a polo horse in Argentina was Gonzalo Pieres; he tried to clone mares Luna and Chusma, but was unsuccessful. Subsequently Mariano Aguerre cloned Califa, and Adolfo Cambiaso cloned Dolfina Lapa and Dolfina Cuartetera, as well as Small Pearson, Colibrí and Aiken Cura. They were all cloned in the United States.

Si bien Cambiaso no fue el primero en clonar caballos de polo, es quien empezó a jugar clones en la temporada de alto handicap de argentina. Un vistazo a las listas del Abierto del Jockey Club, nos mostró cinco clones de la Dolfina Lapa; en el Abierto de Tortugas, Cambiaso jugó seis clones de Dolfina Cuatetera, y una de ellas, la B06, a falta de una, ganó dos mantas: mejor ejemplar de la final, y premio como Mejor Producto Polo Argentino, por parte de la Asociación Argentina de Criadores de Caballos de Polo.

Los resultados están a la vista, lo que demuestra que el clon, además de ser idéntico físicamente al original, tiene el mismo rendimiento, y hasta quizás mejor. Además de las mantas en la final, La Dolfina Cuartetera 01 y 06, en su debut en la Triple Corona, fueron nominadas por la Asociación Argentina de Criadores de Caballos de Polo, como las mejores yeguas del partido entre La Dolfina y El Paraiso.

Many high goal players have cloned their top horses; apart from Cambiaso, Sebastián Merlos and Aguerre, players like Bautista Heguy (Alazanas Birra), Nacho Figueras (Sue Ellen), the Novillo Astrada’s (River Slaney, the stallion who fathered the greatest number of horses playing the Triple Crown), Andrea Vianini (Forest), Agustin Merlos (Virolita), and Alberto Pedro Heguy (Polo Pureza) have also taken advantage of cloning for polo. Many more important clones are due to be born this spring.

The first big sporting success with clones came on October 15, 2013, during the Hurlingham Open. Adolfo Cambiaso came out on Show Me, Sage’s clone, belonging to Charlie Armstrong. While Lucas Criado had played Show Me in Palm Beach, the mare’s debut in the Argentine Triple Crown was a big deal, and she did not disappoint. She went on to play the final of the Palermo Open twice before having to return to the US. In comercial terms, the first offsprings of clones have been sold for record prices at auction. At La Dolfina’s 2014 auc-

Cloning has also been useful as a reproduction tool, as in the case of the iconic stallion Lode, who died in 2010 after a successful career. Lode, cloned by Kheiron Laboratory, was a turf stallion who fathered Sportivo, one of the best stallions in polo, as well as famous mares such as Mecha, one of Facundo Pieres’ best mare. In its next auction Doña Sofía will show one of Lode’s clones.

Otro de los aportes importantes de la clonación como herramienta de reproducccion, es el caso de Lode, un histórico padrillo, que murió en el 2010 luego de una trayectoria impecable. Lode, que ha sido clonado por el laboratorio Kheiron, fue un fructífero padrillo del turf, y a su vez padre de Sportivo, uno de los mejores padrillos de polo, y le ha dado al polo algunas de sus más famosas yeguas, como la Mecha,una de las mejores yeguas de Facundo Pieres. Doña Sofía, en su próximo remate, sacará a la venta una de las primeras preñeces de este padrillo, clon de Lode.

Dubai is one of the most dynamic polo destinations in the world. The middle eastern emirate has grown massively in terms in polo, and 2017 will be no exception. Excitingly, Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club has been chosen to host the Gold Cup Series. The club’s grounds were used in 2016 and are also being used in the current season which has just kicked off.

Uno de los destinos de polo más dinámicos en la actualidad es, sin dudas, Dubai. Y es que el Emirato ubicado en Medio Oriente viene creciendo a pasos agigantados en términos polísticos, y 2017 no será la excepción. Como principal novedad tendrá la inauguración oficial del Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club como sede de la Gold Cup Series, aunque sus canchas ya fueron utilizadas en dicha serie de 2016 y también en la presente temporada, que acaba de comenzar.

The Gold Cup Series began in 2009 and has continued to grow exponentially over the years, in both sporting and social terms. This current season will not see Guillermo Cuitiño on the field, however, as he has decided to participate in the Gold Cup Series as coach of the main Habtoor teams, as well as continuing as manager of the organisation. “This is a new step in my career and I am very excited,” shared Cuitiño with H10/PoloLine. “I have good expectations and believe that we can position ourselves as one of the most important polo clubs in the world.”

With just a few months left until the launch of the second Dominican Republic Polo Challenge, the stars of the season reveal their plans to H10.

A pocos meses de comenzar la esperada segunda edición del Polo Challenge en República Dominicana, los protagonistas le revelan a H10 los detalles que hasta ahora se mantuvieron en secreto.

Several changes will be made to the Central American and Caribbean high-goal. First up, the tournaments will be held in two places: Casa de Campo, Cap Cana, and Lechuza República Dominicana, the club that was opened for the series last year. Both locations have improved their fields and two more grounds were added to assure quality of play. Both fields belong to patrons who took part in the 2016 edition, Rafael Pérez Diez and Tony Rivera. This would mark a historical total of 9 fields for the prestigious season.

Hay varios cambios en la primera temporada de Alto Handicap de América Central y el Caribe: en primer lugar, las sedes principales serán dos este año, Casa de Campo y Lechuza República Dominicana, el club que el año pasado fue estrenado para la ocasión. Ambas sedes han mejorado sustancialmente sus canchas, y se agregan dos canchas más para mantener las mismas en óptimas condiciones, pudiendo así jugar emocionantes partidos de manera regular. Ambas canchas pertenecen a los patrones que participaron de la edición 2016, Rafael Pérez Diez y Tony Rivera: eso quiere decir que a esta temporada le esperan un total de 9 canchas.

The Charity Polo day will also make a comeback. Last year’s Royal Salute Charity Polo Day was a historic occasion on the island; the match was the highest-handicapped in the history of Dominican polo and saw players such as world number one Adolfo Cam-biaso, Pelón Stirling, Juan Martín Nero, Ignacio Novillo Astrada, Cubi Toccalino, Pan-cho Bensadón and patrons Bob Jornayvaz and Victor Vargas take to the field.

El año pasado, el Royal Salute Charity Polo Day fue escenario de un hito histórico en la isla: fue el partido con más goles de handicap en la historia del polo en la República Dominicana, del cual participaron el número 1 del mundo Adolfo Cambiaso, Pelón Stirling, Juan Martín Nero, Ignacio Novillo Astrada, Cubi Toccalino, Pancho Bensadón y los reconocidos patrones Bob Jornayvaz y Victor Vargas.

This year new polo stars join the lineup. Brothers Fred and Julian Mannix will play on the island for the first time, while Santiago and Cubi Toccalino return for a second season. Local patrons, such as Alfredo and Victor Vargas, Enrique Bonetti, Rafael Perez Diez, Alessandro Bazzoni, Gonzalo Mendoza and Leo Matos, were certainly not going to miss the season and they have already registered their teams. Six teams will play the low-goal, while five will play the high-goal.

The season is due to start on January 1 and run through to April 15.

The Bronze Cup will kick off on January 12 and conclude on January 28. The Charity Polo exhibition will be held on February 4, before the Silver Cup starts on February 9. The final will be on February 25. The highlight of the season, the Gold Cup, will begin on March 4; the final is scheduled for March 26. Lastly, the Caribbean Open will be played from March 30 through to April 15. The finals of the Silver, Gold and Caribbean Open will be streamed live like the previous year, via ESPN. The low-goal, which last year proved to be very exciting, will be played simultaneously.

Luego, el día 4 de Febrero se llevará a cabo el partido exhibición de Charity Polo, y la Copa de Plata comenzará el 9/2 para finalizar el 25/2. La esperada Copa de Oro arrancará el día 4 de Marzo, y la emocionante final se jugará el 26 del mismo mes. Finalmente, el Caribbean Open será del 30/3 al 15/4. Las finales de Plata, Oro y el Caribbean Open serán además transmitidas como el año anterior por ESPN. En simultáneo se jugará la categoría bajo handicap que en su edición anterior demostró ser muy entretenida y emocionante.

“Olympia has changed our life” “Olympia nos cambió la vida”

Isabelle and Clemente “Corchito” Zavaleta invited us into their Argentine home, located in La Emilia, General Rodríguez, Buenos Aires. After an intense season in France, where Corchito played with Sainte Mesme, his wife’s family team, the couple returned to Argentina, where they welcomed their first child, Olympia. It is safe to say that the lives of this 7-goal polo player and his wife, a professional rider and entrepreneur, have changed dramatically.

En la intimidad de su casa del barrio La Emilia, en General Rodríguez, Buenos Aires, nos reciben Isabelle y Clemente “Corchito” Zavaleta. Luego de una intensa temporada en Francia, donde Corchito jugó con Sainte Mesme, el tradicional equipo de la familia de su mujer, y con la llegada de su primogénita Olympia, la vida de este polista de 7 goles de hándicap y de su mujer, jinete profesional y empresaria, cambió radicalmente.

Corchito is now a new parent, and also a fundamental part of La Irenita, one of the eight teams qualified to play the Open. Isabelle is always by his side, supporting her husband through every victory and every defeat. This love story began in 2010; the couple met at a party in Paris when Zavaleta was playing the season at Bagatelle. After several trips around the world, their relationship officially began in 2011. They got married two years later at Isabelle’s family home in Sainte Mesme.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU BOTH! HOW IS LIFE WITH OLYMPIA? I: Olympia is amazing, and I don’t just say that because she is my daughter! We are very lucky, she is very well behaved and very calm. Her arrival was a bit of a surprise as she was born a month early; we had just arrived from Europe. Luckily everything went well and she was born at 2.6 kg. After a few days in the hospital we came back to La Emilia as a family. She has made up for that lost month and is now health and happy.

HOW HAS OLYMPIA’S ARRIVAL CHANGED THINGS? I: A child changes everything for a couple! We are a strong family and everything we do is for her. We prioritise her needs and well being.

Everyday life has changed drastically! It is hard to have time to yourself when there is a baby in the house, but I remember that I am both a mother and a woman, so I try to organise my time. Luckily I get a lot of help from my in-laws who live here in Argentina.

C: She is the biggest responsibly we have ever had. Now you don’t live for yourself and your spouse, but for your child, too. Every decision we make revolves around her… and now we have to go out and work harder!

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE AND DAILY ROUTINE LIKE NOW THAT YOU HAVE A CHILD? C: Not much has changed yet! But the beginning of the day is definitely the best; Isabelle brings Olympia into our bed every morning before I leave for the stables. That is my special time with her.

ISABELLE, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO ORGANISE TRAVELLING EVERYWHERE WITH OLYMPIA? I: Don’t even asking me that, I don’t want to think about it! That is the biggest issue for polo playing families: raising children in such a nomad-like environment. When I met Corchito I thought it would be tough for a couple to survive with that lifestyle, but on the other hand 86 m H10 POLO BY LA BOCHA m society

Como todo hijo, llega con un pan debajo del brazo. Corchito no sólo debuta como papá, sino también como pieza fundamental de La Irenita, uno de los 8 equipos que integran el Abierto de Palermo.

Isabelle nunca deja de acompañarlo y de festejar junto con él cada triunfo, pero también cada derrota. La historia de amor de esta encantadora pareja data del año 2010. Se conocieron en una fiesta en la ciudad más romántica del mundo, París, mientras Clemente hacia temporada en Bagatelle. Unos cuantos viajes de por medio para finalmente oficializar su relación en 2011, y festejar con una gran fiesta su casamiento hace 2 años, en el castillo que la familia de ella tiene en Sainte Mesme.

ANTES QUE NADA, MUCHAS FELICIDADES, CHICOS! ¿CÓMO SE PORTA OLYMPIA? I: Olympia es lo más y no sólo por ser mi hija!! Tenemos mucha suerte; es una beba muy muy buena, muy tranquila, con buen carácter (no sé de quién heredó este carácter tan bueno jaja!!). Su llegada fue bastante sorpresiva, ya que llegó un mes antes de la fecha prevista, acabábamos de llegar de Europa. Pero, por suerte, salió todo bien, nació con 2,6 kg, y después de unos días en la clínica, volvimos a casa como familia. Hoy ya recuperó ese mes en el que debía estar en la panza, está sana y fuerte y la disfrutamos todos los días.

¿DE QUÉ MANERA LOS MODIFICÓ LA LLEGADA DE UNA HIJA? I: La llegada de un hijo en una pareja cambia todo! Hoy somos una familia consolidada, cada cosa que uno hace es por y para ella. Ahora priorizamos sus necesidades y bienestar. La vida cotidiana también se modificó mucho! Con un bebé en casa es muy difícil hacerse tiempo para una misma, pero no me olvido que aparte de madre soy mujer, así que intento organizarme y tener mis momentos. Por suerte cuento con mucha ayuda, sobre todo de mi familia política, que es la que vive acá en Argentina.

C: Es la mayor responsabilidad de mi vida; ya no sólo vivís para vos y tu pareja, sino que ahora también para tu hija. Todas las decisiones y acciones que tomamos son pensando en ella… aparte que ahora hay que trabajar más fuerte!

¿CÓMO ES LA VIDA Y TU RUTINA AHORA QUE TENÉS UNA HIJA? C: Por ahora no cambio mucho! Aunque tengo que admitir que el comienzo del día es la mejor parte... todas las mañanas Isabelle me

it fascinated me. You learn languages, meet new people all the time, you have to adapt to every new place you go, you travel to incredible places, and I love not having a fixed routine. Obviously it is not so easy now with a child! We are lucky that our families travel as much as they do, so we don’t get too home-sick. There are positive things about this lifestyle, however strange that may seem. But Olympia is still very young. I do feel bad about whoever sits next to us on the plane, though!

We now have to travel with the baby and our little dog Nova!

YOU BOTH SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN FRANCE. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT PARÍS? WHAT PLACES DO YOU ALWAYS VISIT? I: I have always been 100% Parisian! I went to school and university there. Paris is the city of my heart, but my favourite place in the world right now is our home in Sainte Mesme. I’ve gone from being a city girl to being a country girl. When I’m at home I visit Paris once or twice a week. I love eating out with friends; my favourite place is Le Vin de Bellechasse, a typical French restaurant very close to Musee de Orsay.

I also like to roam around Saint Germain de Pres and visit art galleries there or go shopping.

C: The place I like most is where I work with the horses. It is a dream, an incredible place. We also eat at a restaurant called Le Flandrin a lot.

The whole Strom family gathers there. It is a must when in the city and not many tourists go there.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU WOULD LIKE OLYMPIA TO SEE IN PARÍS? I: My father, her grandfather! They are going to meet at Christmas when we head back to France for the holidays. When she is a bit older

ISABELLE, ¿CÓMO PENSÁS ACOMODARTE AHORA CON OLYMPIA A TODOS LOS VIAJES DEL CORCHITO? I: Qué miedo esta pregunta, no lo quiero ni pensar!! (risas). Ese es EL tema en la familia de cada polista: la crianza de los chicos dentro de una forma de vivir muy nómade. Imaginate que cuando lo conocí a Clemente ya me parecía complicado para una pareja... Pero, por otro lado, me resultaba fascinante. Terminás aprendiendo idiomas, conociendo gente nueva todo el tiempo, tu poder de adaptación a los diferentes lugares es increíble, y el hecho de no tener una rutina, a mí me encanta.

Obviamente, ahora con un hijo ya no es tan fácil! Tenemos la suerte de que nuestras familias pueden viajar cada tanto, y eso hace que extrañemos menos. Hay muchas cosas positivas en esta forma de vida, aunque suene raro! Por lo pronto, Olympia es muy chiquita todavía.

Eso sí, ¡pobre el vecino de asiento en los vuelos! ¡A nuestra perrita Nova ahora se le suma la bebe!

USTEDES PASAN MUCHO TIEMPO EN TU PAÍS, FRANCIA. ¿QUÉ ES LO QUE MÁS LES GUSTA DE PARÍS?, ¿QUÉ LUGARES SUELEN FRECUENTAR? I: ¡Yo siempre fui 100% parisina! Allí fui al colegio y a la Universidad. París es mi ciudad del corazón, aunque tengo que admitir que en este momento mi lugar en el mundo es nuestra casa de Sainte Mesme; sin dudas, mi lugar favorito. Pasé de chica de ciudad a chica de campo.

I would like to take her to my old neighbourhood, to my school, and to see the streets I used to wander when I was young.

WHAT PERSONAL PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED NOW THAT YOU ARE A MOTHER? I: My goal is to be in perfect shape for the 2017 show jumping season; I start a tour of Spain in March. I haven’t ridden in over a year so I am really looking forward to getting back in the saddle. My horses await!

They are in very good hands and are well-trained, so I am going to have to work hard to get up to speed.

DID YOU EVER IMAGINE THAT YOU WOULD LIVE TRAVELLING TO KEEP THE FAMILY TOGETHER? I: My mother travelled a lot when we were young to accompany my father on his business trips, so this isn’t new to me. The difference with polo is that you travel to different places every year, so you need to be very well organised.

But I am always going to be with Clemente; I did it just now travelling to Argentina to give birth to our daughter while he played the Qualifi-

¿Y QUÉ ES LO PRIMERO QUE TE GUSTARÍA QUE OLYMPIA CONOZCA EN PARÍS? I: ¡A mi papá, su abuelo! Se van a conocer en Navidad a nuestro regreso a Francia para las fiestas. Cuando sea un poquito más grande me gustaría que conozca mi escuela, mi barrio, las calles que recorría de chica; en definitiva, mI París más íntimo.

¿QUÉ PROYECTOS PERSONALES TENÉS AHORA, DESPUÉS DE SER MAMÁ?

I: Mi objetivo es llegar en perfecto estado a la temporada de salto 2017, y arrancar en marzo con un Tour en España. Hace casi un año que no monto y tengo muchas ganas de volver a las competencias. ¡Mis caballos me esperan! Quedaron en muy buenas manos, entrenados, así que ahora soy yo la que va a tener que volver a alcanzar su nivel.

I always look forward to coming over in September after Corchito finishes the season in Europe. I like the people, the atmosphere, and now that I am mother to a baby Argentine I love this country even more.

CORCHITO, WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN FRANCE WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE GAMES OR PRACTICES? C: I spend a lot of time on the computer! I also like to go out and play golf with friends or my in-laws, but this was before Olympia came into the picture. Everything can change now! n

I: Mi mamá viajó mucho cuando éramos chicos para acompañar a papá en sus negocios, así que no es algo nuevo para mí. La diferencia con el polo es que cada año son lugares distintos, por lo que se necesita una muy buena organización! Pero, sin dudas, voy a estar junto a Clemente, ya lo hice viajando a la Argentina y teniendo a nuestra hija acá mientras él jugaba la Clasificación. Como ya dije, los viajes tienen sus complicaciones, pero no hay nada más lindo que hacerlos en familia. Sólo hace falta estar organizado, tenemos la gran suerte de poder estar mucho en Francia, donde esté mi familia, y en Argentina, donde está la de él.

CUÁL ES EL PRÓXIMO DESTINO QUE LOS ESPERA, AHORA DE A TRES? C: Por ahora, Francia.

ISA, ¿QUÉ ES LO QUE MÁS TE GUSTA DE ARGENTINA APARTE DEL POLO, POR SUPUESTO? I: ¡Amo Argentina! Hoy puedo decir que “vuelvo a casa” cada Septiembre cuando terminamos la temporada que Corchito juega en Europa. Me gusta la gente, la buena onda es contagiosa, y ahora que soy madre de una pequeña argentina siento aún más amor por este país.

CORCHITO, ¿QUÉ TE GUSTA HACER CUANDO ESTÁS EN FRANCIA Y NO TENÉS PRÁCTICAS NI PARTIDOS? C: ¡Paso mucho tiempo con la computadora! También me gusta salir a jugar al golf con amigos o con mi familia política, aunque ésto era cuando Olympia no existía! ¡Todo puede cambiar ahora! n

This natural paradise is one of the most important fresh water reserves on the continent, boasting impressive fauna; in 1983 Esteros del Iberá was declared a Provincial Reserve. Puerto Valle lies only fifteen minutes from the reserve, and fifty-five kilometres from Posadas airport; the hotel is the only property on the northeastern part of the reserve and has private access to the Esteros. Its thirteen exclusive rooms look out onto the Paraná River, the decoration and architecture highlighting the breathtaking natural surroundings. A tan solo 15 minutos de los Esteros del Iberá y a 55 km del aeropuerto de Posadas se eleva Puerto Valle, la única propiedad ubiacada en el extremo noreste de la Reserva Natural Iberá con exclusivo acceso privado a los esteros.
