What to do next

I’m

feeling anxious and nervous

It is normal to feel nervous on significant days like this. If you are feeling anxious please talk to your family, friends or teachers as they will want to help you. Whatever results you get, be assured that there is a range of support and options available for you.

I have achieved the grades to progress to my chosen Post-16 destination

You should already have been given the next steps to proceed from your chosen post-16 destination. It is strongly recommended that you enrol at your first choice on the same day as receiving your results to avoid disappointment. If you are unsure, check their website or contact them directly to confirm. If you have accepted more than one offer, please email the institution you no longer wish to attend to inform them that you will not be taking up their offer.

I have not achieved the grades I’d hoped for

Don’t panic, there are other options and pathways that you can take. Your first steps should be to contact the sixth form school/college you had applied to as they might still be able to offer you a place on your chosen course. Each school/college will have its own procedures and they may ask you to email your results first before they can make a decision.

If it is not possible for you to continue with your original choice of course, the sixth form/college may advise arranging an appointment between them and yourself to discuss an alternative course or subject.

I did not achieve 4 – 9 grade in English / Maths

Speak with your intended sixth form/college as it may be possible to re-sit your exams at the same time as your new course.

Alternatively, many training providers offer, alongside their study programmes / apprenticeships, an accredited qualification called Functional Skills in maths and English which is an alternative to GCSEs

Functional Skills start from either entry level or level 2 depending on your results. Functional Skills Level 2 in maths and English is equivalent to a GCSE level 4 which employers and many UK universities now accept.

(Please check with the individual university when applying).

The above doesn’t apply to me

There are still other options to explore such as training providers who offer apprenticeships and study programmes.

Shaw Trust work in partnership with the LA, post-16 providers and other funded agencies to source a range of study programme, apprenticeship, supported internship and work experience opportunities.

Shaw Trust will be holding a drop-in service at their offices in Romford.

Drop-in Sessions:

Thursday 21st August 2025 10am – 5pm

Friday 22nd August 2025 10am – 5pm

Venue:

Shaw Trust, First Floor, Tollgate House, 96-98 Market Place, Romford, RM1 3ER

Alternatively email any queries to Haveringenquiries@shaw-trust.org.uk

Alternatives to A-Levels

BTEC level

A BTEC is a vocational qualification studied at school or college. They tend to be work-related and are ideal for any student who prefers more practical-based learning. BTEC qualifications allow you to continue further study at university or enter the workforce.

T Levels

T Levels have been created as an A level alternative. They are two year courses that offer classroom based learning alongside an industry placement and are the equivalent of 3 A levels.

T Levels have been created in collaboration with leading employers and businesses so that their content meets industry needs and prepares the student for work, further training or study.

T level qualifications will allow you to continue further study at university.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships combine on the job training and studying for a qualification, usually one day a week at a college or training centre. At the end of your apprenticeship you will gain a nationally recognised qualification alongside the required skills and knowledge to proceed with your chosen career or a higher level apprenticeship.

Study Programmes

Study programmes are flexible programmes built around the needs of the individual. They include work experience and non-qualification activities that support you to progress to further or higher education (HE) or to employment.

Supported Internships

Supported internships are structured, work-based study programmes for 16 to 24-year-olds with SEND, who have an education, health and care (EHCP) plan. They are a great opportunity to improve the life chances of young people with SEND by supporting them into sustained, paid employment.

Raising Participation Age

The Government has increased the age to which all young people in England must continue in education or training. It’s called raising the participation age or RPA. Find out more about the age you can leave school.

https://www.gov.uk/know-when-you-can-leave-school

Please note it is the legal duty of the young person to participate in either education, employment with training or volunteering post 16. This is because you deserve the best opportunities to achieve your potential; it has been proven that remaining in education or training for longer:

• helps develop the skills needed for adult life

• encourages achievement of full potential

• raises aspirations and expectations

• reduces the likelihood of unemployment

• increases income earning potential and

• encourages positive attitudes towards lifelong learning.

Parents will still qualify for Child Benefit if their child is under 20 and they stay in approved education or training. Once a child leaves education before they are 18, parents will need to tell the Tax Credit Office and the Child Benefit Office.
