Keynote Presentation The Mathemagician

Andrew Jeffrey Having taught for 20 years, Andrew set up Magic Message Ltd. in 2007. Andrew now travels the world offering consultancy services to schools seeking to improve and enrich the teaching and learning of mathematics. He is the author of several books for teachers, including the best-selling ‘Always, Sometimes, Never’, and is a regular keynote speaker at conferences in the UK and abroad. He is passionate about children and how they learn (as well as why they don’t) and can often be seen using magic to help enhance children’s understanding of mathematical principles. In his spare time Andrew likes writing, performing magic and running marathons very slowly. “The Magic of Maths: what is so magical about maths, and how can we demonstrate this to the children in our care for whom maths can feel a bit dry and distant? In this session we will look at ways to ensure ALL children get to experience a little of this magic, whatever their previous experience, attitudes and current attainment level. Prepare to be amazed, entertained, pleasantly surprised - and equipped!”

1. Rethinking Reasoning

Fran Watson

Primary Professional Development Coordinator, NRICH – University of Cambridge

Primary Professional Development Coordinator NRICH – University of Cambridge

Fran joined the NRICH team in 2013 and since October 2015 has been the Professional Development Coordinator. Originally trained as an engineer, she has taught maths to pupils in lower, primary, middle, secondary and upper schools. She loved being an Advanced Skills Teacher for 7 years, sharing her enthusiasm for all things mathematical and supporting teachers to develop mathematical thinking opportunities for their learners. She now travels wherever NRICH is known and invited, running sessions for teachers and workshops for children. The session will focus on ‘Rethinking Reasoning’ to promote the development and progression of reasoning using a framework of stages that NRICH have developed. We will work together on 2 or 3 tasks to explore the opportunities that they offer for reasoning in different contexts and for different purposes.

2. The Problem Solving Company

Maths Leader The Problem Solving Company

Problem Solving is a large part of the current Mathematical curriculum for both primary and secondary Schools. Their fun Maths Workshops showcase bespoke puzzles and challenges. These puzzles may look easy at first sight, but it is not until the solving begins that the challenge can be truly evaluated. It is through problem solving that pupils can develop their thinking skills and mathematical reasoning. The 90 minute session will showcase a variety of activities and you will have the opportunity to work to solve the problems.

A. Bar Modelling through the CPA Approach

Pauline Gibbons

Find out more about the bar model method — a mainstay of the Singapore method that enables children to visualise mathematical concepts, solve problems, and get started the easy way with algebra. We’ll review how different types of bar models can be used for various topics and go through some problem solving questions. You will leave this workshop with an understanding of bar modelling, and practical strategies to confidently support children.

B. Developing Problem Solving & Thinking Skills In The Classroom

Gavin Ucko

Maths – No Problem!

Happy Puzzle Company

The thinking skills and maths programmes give your staff an opportunity to climb inside the minds of their pupils to understand how they think and learn. This is done by using the same puzzles that the pupils solve, but at an appropriate level, to enable the participants to experience the processes that the pupils go through when they start to find aspects of their schoolwork challenging. By mirroring these processes, the participants gain a greater understanding of the pupils’ experience, nurturing their ability to guide pupils of all abilities towards raising their expectations in the classroom.
