Keynote Speaker: Carol Allen - Education Advisor for ICT and Inclusion Carol is an education advisor for ICT and Inclusion and has taught in mainstream and schools for pupils with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties. The majority of her work has centred on creative and engaging use of technology to support communication.

She focuses-on easy to replicate practice which is fun, achievable and creates communication enhancement opportunities. Carol’s keynote speech is titled ‘Communication for All!’ At the heart of all learning is effective communication.

Without connection and engagement we cannot create accessible learning opportunities. The ability to communicate effectively allows active participation in learning, leisure and life and consequently self-value and independence. The session will consider the importance of creative technology as both a support to developing communication and as an access technology.

Main Workshop Presenter: Stewart Swann - LEGO© Education Academy Certified Trainer Stuart has more than twenty years’ teaching experience and has trained adults who work with vulnerable young people to use Lego© Education resources in their settings. He has also worked with young people and adults with a range of learning and physical disabilities using Lego© Education tools to develop and engage them in learning and social situations. His main workshop, ‘Lego© Story Starters Storytelling using Lego© Story Visualiser Software and other iPad apps’, will introduce Lego© Education Story Starters, which will include working as a team in small groups to plan, build and retell a three-part story (with a beginning, middle and end) and turning models into a comic book using an easy to understand and accessible app and presenting the story to the group. This workshop will highlight the application and importance of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and imagination. All whilst having great fun!

1. Lego WeDo – Stuart Coding Through Swann Constructionism LEGO© Education Academy Certified Trainer

Lego© WeDo offers a way to deliver the elements of the computing curriculum through science, design & technology and geography.

You’ll be set a building challenge and then use the WeDo app to bring the creation to life! This workshop will highlight the application and importance of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and imagination. All while having great fun!

2. London Grid for Learning (LGfL) Inclusive and Interactive Online Resources

LGfL provides inclusive and interactive online resources for learners aged 3-16 with SEND (including symbolised resources from Widgit, Busy Things content, a powerful toolbar to support literacy intervention and extended writing and much more). Explore the diverse and multisensory LGfL resources which support cognition and learning; communication and interaction; sensory and physical needs and social, emotional and mental health for learners with SEND.

3. Independent Working & Scanning Pens using Reading Pens

See how Scanning Pens can be used with other assistive technologies to help SEND pupils forge ahead in school and in life. 4. Lego© Based Therapy Session

Elizabeth Dunnett and Kathyrn Stowell Havering CAD 5-19 Team

Lego© Based Therapy is a well-established intervention used to support children with social communication differences, enabling pupils to practise the skills of listening and attention, turn-taking, asking and answering questions, starting, continuing and ending a conversation, topic maintenance, expressive language skills, receptive language skills (ICWs), as well as understanding the needs of the listener and collaborative problem solving. This session will demonstrate how Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) can be used with pupils to engage and successfully take part in a Lego© session using an iPad and Clicker Apps to support vocalisation and expressive language.

5. Communicate in Print 3 and Widgit Online

A workshop to look at quick, easy and creative ways of using symbols to support teaching and learning. From looking at school case studies (early years through to secondary schools), resource examples and Widgit’s online software, you will gain an insight into how symbols can visually support all pupils learning the curriculum.

For the learner with Autism hands are a primary focus, they frequently provide calming, stimming opportunities, they may be protected and held back from unwanted sensory experiences and yet as a complete contradiction, fully engaged with other sensory experiences – often those that are not viewed by others as acceptable. This practical session will look at hands and hand play. How do we work towards handwriting effectively? How do we support fine motor movements needed for technology access from mouse control to touchscreen movements? How do we release the hands to engage in the most useful learning opportunities? If we are to support learners with technology, how do we ensure that their hands are ready and able to be used to access learning opportunities? Find out how.
